Review Smiths

Hi Everyone,

It’s February, the month of love, so with that in mind we are going to give a little shout out to those that we love, our contributors, our writers and of course, our readers! Without you guys we wouldn’t be able to afford the office cat’s Dreamies and more notably his emergency kidney surgery that cost roughly the same as a new car.

We also love getting to grips with lots of interesting products and this month has been no different, we have a Browning Trail Cam that we can utilise to spy on office cat and see what trouble he is getting into. The DEEBOT robot vacuum is perfect for cleaning up office cat’s hair whilst the Kaiweets metal detector is ideal for finding the Saxon treasure needed to cover the cost of any other treatment that furry git might need.

As always there is plenty to get your teeth into including customisable keyboards, smartphones, dashcams, activewear and not forgetting the entirely pointless but utterly adorable Tiny TV 2 from Tiny Circuits (perhaps the valentines gift you were looking for). Enjoy!

TINyCIrCuITs TINy TV 2

The TinyTV 2 isn’t just painfully cute, but it is functional, these 1:12 scale devices measure up at 47.6mm H x 36.6mm L x 25.9mm W and it arrives fully assembled. It is ready to use right out of the box and comes preloaded with videos, the knobs on the side control the volume and surf between channels by turning the knobs. There is a nostalgia about the design, the peg legs, brown casing and knobs have real 50s vibes which is a wonderful juxtaposition with the modern tech its packed with. The display is IPS TFT 65K Colour, 26mm (1.0"), 216x135 pixels, it comes with built in 8GB storage that offers about 10 hours of video playback and the 16x9mm (0.6" x 0.4") front facing speaker provides the audio.

It has a rechargeable battery that gives you about 2 hours of playtime and comes with its own usable Tiny infrared remote control and it is all powered by Raspberry Pi RP2040 Processor. There is an option available to have clear casing so you can see all the chips and wires inside which gives it more of 90s feel, when everything was see through for some reason. It is straightforward to load your own videos, movies, and TV shows using the TinyTV Converter which is a free tool to convert any MP4 file, then simply load the files onto the TinyTV 2 using the USB-C. You can also stream videos from a connected computer over USB-C however it is worth knowing that it does not receive over-the-air television content, nor can it wirelessly livestream so you will still have to watch the world cup final on a regular device.

The first thing we noticed about the HZ40000UKT vacuum is that it straddles both worlds, so often stick vacuum cleaners are cordless and although that are making moving around the house easier it tends to sacrifice suction. This vacuum comes with a 30cm Crevice Tool, a Multi Surface Tool and an Anti-Hair Wrap Pet Power Brush and weighs less than 5kg. The slimline body makes it easy to manoeuvre especially getting up high, into the corners and under furniture, it features DuoClean Detect Technology which comes in the form of two brush-rolls and multiple sensors that react and adapt for optimal performance.

The Floor Detect function senses the floor type you are cleaning and adjusts the brush-roll speed and suction to give the precise cleaning performance, whilst the Reverse Clean Technology aim to tackle the issue of vacuums being pretty pants in reverse. This uses the built-in technology in the floorhead which is designed to sense the direction and works in both forward AND reverse. The vacuum converts easily into a handheld vacuum so you can tackle the stairs, furniture, cars, and included attachments help with this. For pet owners, the Pet Power Brush with Anti-Hair Wrap Technology is successful at removing embedded pet hairs from upholstery, such as sofas, cushions, curtains, and car interiors.

The Flexology feature allows you to bend the wand to get under sofas, tables and sideboards it also means you can fold it over for compact, freestanding storage. The 10m power cord gives you plenty of freedom however it can get in the way as it’s a bit stiff so kicking it out the way can become a bit of a battle at times. The Anti-Allergen and AntiOdour Technology uses a complete seal that captures and traps 99.9% of dust and allergens whilst the Anti-Odour Technology guards against bad odours inside the vacuum.

The HZ4000UKT is good choice for someone looking for a powerful vacuum without the bulk, particularly those with pets, the stiff cord can get in the way however it’s a price we are willing to pay for the extra suction you gain.

VIVObareFOOT TraCker aT mOC

Straight off we loved the look of the Tracker AT Moc, they are a nod to the heritage of the boots worn by the early American outdoor workers, and a homage to traditional moccasins. Vivobarefoot has given their classic Tracker silhouette with the Tracker Moc, it combines a refined Taro leather upper and workwear-inspired accent details which gives it both a unique yet familiar look. This shoe weighs about 456g and features a brand-new All Terrain sole with improved grip due to an enhanced lug design, strategic positioning along with the tough, nonmarking rubber compound deliver high abrasion when you need it most. The lugs have extra grooves and are 1.5mm higher for better grip and durability, reducing slip. The thermal insole has built-in temperature-regulating technology that absorbs, stores and releases heat when you need it. This smart layer responds to the naturally changing temperatures of your feet, keeping them warm in cooler climates and cooling them down when things get a bit sweaty. The upper is breathable and made to be

lightweight and comfortable with a good amount of flexibility for natural movement whether you are taking a casual stroll or picking up the pace.

With movement and sensation being at the heart of Vivobarefoot its should come as no surprise that Tracker AT Mocs can be worn barefoot, it has been created for natural stability, natural sensory feedback and natural strength. With a roomy toebox that allows the feet to spread as they should with no restriction, the sole provides protection whilst allowing the wearer to experience the terrain beneath their feet. This activates micro muscles in the toes, foot and ankle strengthening areas that are often neglected, as these areas are literally the foundation of your body it can improve posture, balance and stability. We love the look, we love the ethos of the company and the health benefits of these shoes, pricey yes but it is worth paying extra when you know the quality of the product is high end.

COlumbIa amplI-dry II

The unpredictable weather where we live means you can never be certain what gear you need to stay comfortable outdoors, what caught our eye immediately with the Ampli-Dry II was when not in use it can be packed away into its own pocket making it a great “just in case” carry on. This jacket comes in six attractive shades with bright orange Spicey being our favourite but if something more natural is your vibe the black, navy and green are available.

This jacket has been designed around the most demanding hikes, with an ergonomic fit built for freedom of movement, it uses a four-way comfort stretch material that allows the jacket to move with you no matter how energetic you get. The storm hood, cuffs and hem are all adjustable for a customised fit so even when the wind and rain get intense it keeps all that weather out and away from your body. The Omni-Tech layer uses waterproof-breathable technology that provides protection in volatile conditions with multilayered construction that sheds water whilst always moisture and heat created inside the jacket to escape.

The Ampli-Dry II has fully taped seams and the coated zipper has also been thoughtfully chosen to keep the water out, the zip-up hand and chest pocket will let you store the essentials you need close to hand. There are zip up vents under the arms in case things get a bit toasty providing some ventilation without compromising the waterproofing and its worth noting the entire item is PFAS (Per- and Polyfluorinated Substances) free. The Ampli-Dry II is an excellent all-rounder, capable of providing year long weather protection and comfort, plus thanks to its compact nature and lightweight construction its super travel friendly.

selF-prOpelled lawN mOwer

My partner has been in a long-term toxic relationship with our lawn mower, he hated everything about it, the small grass bin, weak battery and its delicate disposition when it came to acorns. After every encounter with it he swore he was getting a new one but never did until the DeWalt arrived in the office and that abusive old mower was finally kicked to the curb, somewhat literally.

Like a cliché this new model is younger, fitter and better looking the DCMWSP156N-XJ comes with a high-efficiency cutting system with dual blades, designed for extended runtime and cutting performance. The 53cm steel deck mower has an autosensing brushless motor, engineered for durability and can keep going for up to 64 minutes of, ideal for lawns measuring up to 1340m squared, far larger than ours.

This mower is wonderfully quiet (unlike our neighbour’s petrol mower) thanks to the two 18v XR 8.0AH batteries, unfortunately batteries and charger sold separately but the good news is it is part of the cordless 18V XR System and fully compatible with over 250 other products. It comes equipped with a mulching plug for natural lawn fertilization as well as a generous 67L capacity mesh fabric bag for cut-free lawn aesthetics. It has been designed to be comfortable with a simple height adjustment function alongside a simple one-touch folding handle for easy and compact storage. There is a handy LED indicator on the handle that lets you know charge status, as well as cutting system difficulty, blade end of life and a load meter to let you know when to empty the grass bin.

Other features include the selectable ideal walking pace with variable speed, rear wheel drive, single point height adjust system with six cutting settings, from 25mm-102mm. It is a real pleasure to use, the self-propelling mechanism takes out the hard work and it had no problem with our acorns, it has a solid and robust design that give me faith that this one will be sticking around for awhile.

sOdasTream arT

Before I was pregnant, I’d only heard of a Sodastream as something that everyone had in the 80s, however whilst pregnant I found that one of the few things that didn’t make me nauseous was fizzy water (sparkling water if you’re fancy). It was then I entered my Sodastream era and for once I’m in fashion, there has been a huge shift towards sustainability and attempts to step away from single use plastics has made the Sodastream increasingly popular again.

The SodaStream ART is their latest machine that features a slim silhouette, tastefully designed with stainless-steel trim and a unique lever, it is available in a black or white finish although we would have liked to see some other colour options. The Art also features the new Quick Connect technology for fast and easy CO2 cylinder insertion, which is as simple to install as it sounds, you don’t even have to screw it in like the previous model. The SodaStream CO2 cylinders are totally safe to have in your home, they feature a safety valve that will harmlessly release the CO2 in the unlikely event that the pressure rises above threshold levels. Just make sure to always store your CO2 cylinder in a cool and dry environment, away from direct sunlight, each cylinder will produce about 60L.

The Art is completely cord free, no electricity needed, its comes with a 1L BPA free, dishwasher safe bottle, although its worth noting these plastic bottles come with a 3year life span due to the constant pressure its subjected to. The Snap & Lock technology makes it fool proof to use, simply insert the bottle, push it back towards the machine and its ready to go. Then its just a matter of pulling the handle to add the fizz, the more pulls the fizzier it gets, I find 3-4 is good for me but I do prefer things on the fizzier side. My model has a push button at the top, but I appreciate the handle on the Art, it makes it more user friendly for people who struggle with the dexterity or mobility.

There are plenty of mixers available and as Pepsi owns Sodastream now that includes means Pepsi, 7up and Lipton Ice Tea mixers which can be used to make 9L of the drink, there are also cocktail mixers and lots of other fruity options. Personally love the plain and simple fizzy water, if I’m feeling fruity I’ll add some apple juice to make my own, far cheaper version of a brand that rhymes with Appleviser.

deebOT T20 OmNI rObOT VaCuum

When it comes to technology this is where we should be focusing, I don’t want AI to take over writing songs and creating art, I want it to clean my house and do my laundry for me. We are halfway there with robot vacuum and the T20 Omni from DEEBOT takes things up a notch but being able to vacuum, sweep and mop. This vacuum comes equipped with the ECOVACS first-ever 55 degrees hot water mop washing technology, it is powered by OZMO Turbo 2.0 rotating mopping system with a powerful 6000Pa suction. The clever Auto-lift Mopping functions lets the T20 recognise carpets with accuracy, it can change freely between vacuum-only, mop-only, vacuum while mopping, vacuum first before mopping mode. The mop uses hot water to wash the mop in the robotic vacuum cleaner when it’s done, dissolving stubborn stains, removes odours, and stimulates the activity of cleaning solution.

The TrueDetect 3D 3.0 technology is based on structured light and 3d imaging algorithms, which means the T20 uses real-time 3D scanning and detection to achieve strategic avoidance. The 6000Pa suction power we mentioned earlier comes works with a rubber brush for enhanced carpet vacuuming, hair tangled on the brush can be easily removed and cleaned although something built in to do this would be nice. The Edge Deep Cleaning function rotates its body when it operates for a certain distance in corners and outstretched mopping pad can reach the corner with a 3mm distance. It certainly does a reasonable job at the edges but like so many vacuums of this nature it does leave a strip untouched, and corners can be left with some debris.

The YIKO Voice Assistant can be activated by simply saying "OK YIKO", the intelligent AI Voice Control Technology helps you guide DEEBOT to start its cleaning job without getting up from your chair. There are plenty of controls and setting to play with on the app making it straightforward to get a personalised job done as and when you need it. It is powered by 5200mAh battery, and it can automatically recharge and resumes its work when ready right where it left off.

The T20 Omni performs impressively, so good in fact you can easily just let it get on with things, the mop does a great job and picks up mess with ease with downward pressure and hot water. It doesn’t come cheap but if you are looking for functional mapping and mopping this robot has you covered.

With near enough everything technical in our homes requiring charging our plugs sockets can quickly become a Battle Royale for which item shall live, and which shall die. The Rise 3 in 1 from Native Union takes some of the competition out charging as it is capable of charging up three devices simultaneously, providing an efficient and space saving solution. It is available in the choice of the Black or the Sandstone finish and comes with a 6.5ft / 2m USB-C to USB-C cable as well as a protective travel pouch.

The Rise 3-in-1 Magnetic Wireless Charger measures up at 5.12 in H x 2.56 in W x 0.87 D and weighs just 0.62 lbs making it easy to take away with you when needed. It is worth noting here that it has been designed around the iPhone and accessories, you can charge your iPhone flat, or simultaneously with your AirPods and Apple Watch with it in stand mode. It uses Qi2 charging, which utilises a magnetic profile to create the perfect alignment between receivers and transmitters for fast, safe and efficient charging of up to 15W.

The adjustable angles mean you can keep using your phone whilst it charges, you can still read messages, stream movies or use it for video calls, it can also be folded down to charge the phone only and this way you will get the fastest charge. It has a modern look with leather-like details making it more of a statement piece for your space, it certainly looks better than the cluster of dangling charging cables it will probably be replacing. It has a good weight to the base which enables you to place your device and remove it without it skidding about the place whilst the discreet LED indicator lets you know your charging status.

dermadry TOTal

I used to work with a guy who was awkward when it came to hand shaking, we never thought much of it until over a few afterwork drinks he told us suffered with hyperhidrosis. This condition causes excessive sweating, it can appear anywhere on the body however it is particularly common in the hands, feet and armpits and evidence suggest that more than 80% people with this disorder experienced moderate to severe emotional distress including depression.

Dermadry Total is a treatment system that can help with these symptoms and can be used on the hands, feet and underarms by using Iontophoresis this has been a reliable, trusted, and effective solution for hyperhidrosis for nearly a century. Since it was first introduced, it is one of the go-to treatments for hyperhidrosis and often classified as a first or second-line treatment option when traditional antiperspirants have not worked. It works by plugging the device into the mains and delivers a mild electrical current to the treatment area, using the minerals found in tap water as a conductor, this might sound like something you shouldn’t be combining, electric and water but it is perfectly safe.

The current reaches the wet skin, through the conductive metal electrodes via a protective barrier such as a towel or sponge placed over the electrodes to protect the skin during treatment. The passage of the mild electrical current disrupts the signal between the nerves and sweat glands and halts sweat production in the treated zone which is an extremely effective way to treat even the most serious cases of hyperhidrosis.

The initial treatment phase is done until the desired level of dryness is achieved, this involves five 20 minute sessions a week at the highest comfort setting for up to six weeks although most people get results within two weeks. Then the maintenance stage begins, this must be done to upkeep results and can be as little as once every few weeks but varies from person to person. It doesn’t hurt when using the device but it can feel a bit tingly and there’s a small chance of skin irritation and redness but overall the treatment is very mild and comfortable. The Dermadry Total provides effective relief from excessive sweating which will be a massive game changer for people suffering from it, it is incredibly easy to use and you can take it away with you so you never have to miss a session.

In recent years I have found myself missing my old iPod nano that I used to take running with me, my phone has all the joy of music, but notifications of emails received with distract me and make me feel guilty for taking that time out for myself and delaying a response. The Mighty 3 is the perfect device for those looking to step back from their devices but to still enjoy their favourite audio, I for one don’t want to be left with just the sound of my own wheezing. This dinky item measures just 1.5" x 1.5" x 0.64” and weighs only 0.7 ounces, the 8GB storage capacity will easily hold 1000+ tracks but we love most is the option to stream music offline from Sportify Premium or with Amazon Music compatibility coming soon.

It is WiFi and Bluetooth enabled for straightforward syncing and connection to wireless headphones, the rechargeable battery offers 8+ hours of playback whilst the tough little body is drop and water resistant (IPX4 rated). The audio quality is enjoyable with100 dB SNR; THD+N -90 dB playback, the device is also super easy to navigate with the basic physical buttons making it possible to operate without taking our eyes off the world around you. The Playlist Selector button allows you to scroll your collection whilst Mighty 3 speaks the name of each playlist (currently in English only) into your headphones again which is great for when I’m running as if I look down at my screen I’m almost guaranteed to trip over my own feet. Mighty automatically updates your playlists and podcasts each night so you always have the latest audio, there’s an integrated clip on the back of device so you can attach it to your clothing removing the need for arm straps or waist bags.

I appreciate the simplicity and functionality of the Mighty 3, it lets me work out without the distraction of my phone and irritation notifications, its also easier to navigate on the go.

I used to work in a call centre a fair few years ago. Wasn’t my favourite job ever, I’ll be honest, but that was more to do with the employer than the job itself. One of the things I do remember however, is how damn uncomfortable the headset was! It was one of those things with just a thin wire band on top and those itchy earpads that just made life worse as soon as the temperature went above mildly tepid… As usual though, technology has moved on and minor things like user comfort are actually pretty big these days!

If you hadn’t already guessed, this is a nice, comfy set of headphones with plenty of decent padding and good sized ear-pieces ensuring your workers will at least be comfortable while in meetings or taking calls. Speaking of meetings, if you’re looking for a headset that caters for modern online meeting sites, this one should be what you’re looking for. It’s compatible with most Unified Communication sites such as Google Meet and Zoom and has 2 analogue microphones built in to the boom which, combined with the active noise cancellation ensures a decent voice pick up so you’ll easily be heard, despite any background noise.

As well as the above, the Impact 460 has a couple of nice little functions, my favourite one being that ability to mute yourself by simply lifting the mic boom. This simple yet elegant function is just a nice touch that fits naturally with how people use headsets and is well thought out. The other thing I like, although far more common, is the light that comes on at the end of the boom when you are muted, giving a nice visual cue to remind you so you don’t end up thinking they’re all ignoring you.

The 3.2 Inch LCD screen has been included for effortless operation, playback, and setup, the Winter Mode has been designed to combat cold weather conditions, this unique feature generates just enough heat to keep the area around the dashcam lens clear, preventing ice or snow buildup. This camera is equipped with a large open lens aperture for high levels of light intake, even in low-light conditions.

Other features include the Auto Image Stabilisation that corrects camera shake on bumpy roads, a must around my way as there are more potholes than actual road, the Battery Voltage Monitoring has voltage cut-off mechanism to ensure your vehicle's battery never runs flat when installed correctly. The built in GPS means every aspect of your journey is meticulously tracked and stored from your locations to your speed and lets you visualise your entire journey on a map for effortless playback and reference.

The Halo Play is a great choice for covering all aspects of road and parking safety, providing peace of mind in one convenient little package

The Halo Ultima from Road Angel is a slightly cheaper option than the play with plenty of Road Angels valuable features, it comes with sharp and clear 4K Ultra HD at the front and defined 1080p Full HD at the rear. The G-sensor has variable sensitivity in parking mode, ideal for my location as we have a lot of HGV going past that shake both the house and car. The 24/7 Always-on Parking mode can be activated when the device is hardwired into the car, this means the camera will automatically power up and save the event if the G-Sensor is triggered by physical movement or damage to the vehicle.

The 140° viewing angle captures a 70% of what the human eye can see, providing comprehensive coverage of your surroundings, the Shake-Free Footage stabilises bumpy rides, and ensures the video smooth and steady. The battery monitoring system means you don’t have to choose between conserving the cars battery energy and keeping a watchful eye over your car. When wired in the Ultima has a voltage cut-off, meaning the car battery will never run flat, in any event, when your car battery voltage is running low, the halo wiring kit will cut power to the dashcam enabling your vehicle battery to stay charged up.

The night vision feature means the camera makes use of the large open lens aperture to maximise light intake for clear footage quality, particularly in low-light conditions. The Cut-Clip-Share feature lets you capture every moment with precision and tailor recording options, you can select exact times, trim clips, and save them to your phone for total control. You can also watch live previews, download footage instantly after an incident, and share clips via WhatsApp, email, or social media with ease.

The Ultima is an easy-to-use dash cam that covers both front and rear when you are in the car and even when you are not, it has all the features you need without over complicating things.

There are so many options out there for keyboards these days, the choice is mind-boggling and narrowing it down to what you prefer/want is a tough job but then, that’s what we’re here for! Take this one from Mechlands for example. If you have limited space or prefer a compact keyboard, this one is ideal. Not only is it smaller than a full-sized keyboard, it has all the functional buttons you’re likely to need along with a 1.06” TFT (Thin Film Transistor –basically uses less power than an LED screen but improves image quality so is ideal for a smaller area) screen that is handy for showing battery life, the time and which connection mode you currently have. You can also load up Gif’s to help brighten your mood while using it!

Of course, part of the keyboard experience is how the keys sound and feel while you’re using them. The Vibe 99 features gasket mounted keys, providing a soft, almost cushioned feel while typing and less ‘clacking’ as a result, great for those that can’t stand the noise of typing or if you need to type and keep it quiet (like when someone else is trying to focus in the room). It achieves this through 5 layers of padding incorporating different types of foam and a bottom silicone pad. Surrounding the keys is a flex-cut PC plate with stabilisers that also helps to keep the nose signature to a minimum. All these things combined leave you with a very satisfying, smooth typing experience.

The Vibe 99 comes with 3 different ways to connect to your chosen device: wired, 2.4 GHz wireless and Bluetooth. When using the wireless or Bluetooth option, the battery can last 2-3 weeks depending on usage and whether you have LGB backlighting active or not. Overall, this is a nicely compact, comprehensive and comfortable keyboard, really worth it for the price.

meChlaNds VIbe 75

If you have read Vibe 99 review well, this is the far more austere version, the 75! The numbers in the product name refer to the percentage size of the keyboard so we’re dealing with a 75% one here. For those not in the know, this means there are 75% of the amount of keys that you would get with a full-size keyboard and is not necessarily related to the size of the keyboard itself! Saying that, this one is pretty small mainly due to the loss of the number pad and is ideal for those who need a functional keyboard while travelling.

Just like the Vibe 99, the keys are gasket mounted and have 5 layers of cushioning (PORON sandwich foam, IXPE switch pad, PET film, Poron PCB foam and a bottom silicone pad) to help keep that quiet typing vibe (see what I did there?). I can imagine people working on a train and not getting annoyed looks from all the other passengers with an annoying clickety-clack over-riding the less annoying clickety-clack from the train journey itself!

This keyboard features a swappable TFT screen and knob so you can choose between useful info such as battery life or connection type and a handy volume control for whatever device you have connected the keyboard to. Just make sure you restart the keyboard before you swap them out! The screen also allows for customisable Gif’s. Speaking of customisable, the whole thing has South-facing RGB backlighting that you can adjust and the keys themselves are hotswappable with a keycap/switch puller included in the box. On top of this, the whole things has a nice, solid-looking feel to it and people would be forgiven for thinking you had spent a lot more on this than you actually have!

FIIO dm13

To all of you that use digital music devices, portable CD players are hardly anything new. I remember teenage me in the early 90’s walking around with my ‘Discman’ and headphones, desperately trying to walk without a bounce so as to avoid the tracks skipping! Thankfully the technology has moved on somewhat so that tracks skipping halfway through playing is a rare occurrence these days (this device makes use of Electronic Skip Protection) and the focus can now be on sound quality and depth.

Fiio have pulled out all the stops when it comes to the quality of sound with the DM13. Firstly, there are not one but two CS43198 DAC chips which ensures a smooth 99-step volume transition and a specially designed output stage to better capture the sound. The sound quality therefore, remains the same no matter the volume level. Of course, there’s not a lot of point in this if you can’t actually listen to the output so, as well as driving the majority of headphones out there (with both 3.5 and 4.4 mm outputs as well), you can also take advantage of powered speakers or headphone amps to really make the most out of the musical output. You also get all the usual things you expect with a music player – playback looping (individual tracks or the whole CD), gapless playback and random selection, great for those compilation CD’s you inevitably get at Christmas time!

One of the functions that I really like about this disc player however is the ability to rip your CD’s. Simply attach it to your PC with the provided USB-A to C cable (also doubles up as the charging cable of course) and rip away! The resultant WMA files are fine if using Microsoft software or devices but not quite as versatile as MP3’s. However, it’s relatively easy to convert them if you wish with a little bit of searching around online.

This is the first time I’ve seen a set of earbuds that have a separate jack that connects to the wire that connects to the device you’re actually playing the music from (still with me?). They’re nothing new but it’s the first time I’ve seen any! The advantage of this set up is that if the wires break or get caught up, you can replace them without having to buy a whole new set which certainly appeals to a clumsy old fool like me…

Most ear buds of this ilk rely on MMCX (Micro Miniature Co-aXial) Connectors which can be very delicate and prone to breaking so Periodic Audio have come up with a world first to get around this problem! Introducing the world’s smallest 2.5mm jack. At just 3.6mm across and with a mounting depth of 9.5mm, these tiny little jacks are far more secure and sturdy than others on the market. But this isn’t the only thing these buds have going for them. As their name would suggest (and is a theme that Periodic Audio have adopted for all of their ear buds – defining them by the periodic symbol of the metal used), Beryllium is in these ear buds and has been used to create the transducer diaphragm, which basically means minimum distortion due to a combination of the metal not bending on its own and the ability to dissipate internal energy quite efficiently.

All the above translates in to a very good listen indeed. The clarity is there alongside a generous bass sound, both in quantity and quality and a good, rich mid-range too with great clarity on vocals, both male and female. There are other buds at a similar price level that exceed the Beryllium in certain areas but these are a great all-rounder and I somehow don’t think anyone will regret buying them, despite the high price tag.

I don’t know about you guys but one thing that I find really confusing is multi-function buttons. Maybe it’s my age or something but remembering how many presses or how long I have to hold a button down for is, frankly, too much hassle! I recently bought a set of ear buds with exactly this problem and so I don’t even bother trying to adjust the volume on them or skip tracks, I just use my player and I’m probably not the only one. Thankfully, Periodic Audio seem to realise this and so have come up with this very simple and intuitive Bluetooth Receiver.

The Neon focuses on simplicity for the user with just 4 buttons: Volume Up, Volume Down, a button that does pairing, switching and reset and one final button that covers Play, pause, Fast Forward, Rewind and the ability to answer phone calls. It’s the only real multi-function button on there but they’ve kept it simple with a single click for pause, double click to skip forward to the next track and a triple click to go back a track. Even an old grognard like me can figure this out! If you get a phone call, you just press this button and you’ve answered, simple! The switch between devices is seamless and they’ve managed this by convincing 2 devices they’re both connected at the same time (even though they’re not!) and is just a click of a button to do.

Simplicity of use is one thing but if it isn’t compatible with your devices, what’s the point? Good news is, they’ve got that covered too with most codecs covered allowing you to connect to Android, Apple and other Bluetooth devices. Combine that with being able to connect to two separate devices at the same time and you’ve got an easy-to-use device that can facilitate sound well that doesn’t cost that much either.

When I got my first external flash for my SLR camera it was roughly the size of a house brick, it certainly didn’t make snapping those candid shots easy when I had to carry around a bunch of equipment that weighed the same as a toddler. Thankfully those days are gone, and camera gear is much more portable, the Godox iM30 fits into this category as a super compact portable flash.

The iM30 has been designed with portability in mind, compact enough to slip into your pocket and weighing just 78g its ideal for on the go shooting, it is also versatile thanks to its multi camera compatibility. It has an integrated hot shoe that allows you to simply attach it and go with most mirrorless and film cameras for a quick setup. The Enhanced Natural Lighting comes with a guide number of 15 (ISO 100, meters), the Versatile Power Options provides seven adjustable power levels (1/64~1/1), enabling you to easily customize the light for any scene. The iM30 can be charged up or powered via replaceable AAA batteries so you don’t have to wait for it to charge up, just keep some spare batteries and you are always ready to shoot, you will get roughly 230 flashes from a single charge.

Due to the compact size of the flash when it is used with larger lenses or lens hoods you can sometimes get shadow appearing on the subject, because of this Godox recommends pairing this flash with small lenses (50mm pancake or less) however there are professional flash models that will work with larger lenses.

The iM30 is a great little flash for on the go shoots, giving you more control over your lighting in a compact and affordable little unit.

INFINIX hOT 50 5g

Mobile phones have moved on somewhat since Nokia grabbed everyone’s attention when they coded Snake in to the 6110 back in ’97. Now, over 25 years later you can play games like First-Person Shooters, driving games and immerse yourself in MMORPG’s, all on your mobile phone. They’ve become multi-media devices, used for all manner of things with phone calls being 1 small aspect of their design and Infinix have embraced this whole-heartedly!

Infinix are an Indian company, established 11 years ago with a focus on the younger market and how the youth of today focus on their mobile devices and it certainly seems to have paid off! They are now the world’s 3rd largest phone maker in the world with 12 million users in India alone and you can see why with this offering. Firstly, it’s really slim at 7.8mm which, considering all it has packed in, is quite remarkable. We have 5G, a 48mp Sony IMX582 Dual AI Camera with 12 camera modes, a Mediatek Dimensity6300 processor and up to 16GB Ram. On top of that we have 128GB storage and a 17.02cm screen size (93.9% screen to body ratio) with a 120Hz refresh rate. Phew! Clearly this thing has been designed with entertainment in mind and it doesn’t fail to deliver in that respect.

However, it’s all well and good having all the toys but if the battery life is no good, what’s the point? Most mobile phones carry a battery that carries 2-4000 mAh’s, this one has 5000 mAh’s, giving it a longer duration than the majority out there and so able to handle all the above toys. Seeing as you can have about 20 apps open at a time due to the processor, this is no bad thing! Obviously, the more you have going on, the less time it will last but it charges quickly via USB-C with up to 18W capability. TLDR: if you use your phone for mostly media, this one is ideal.

INFINIX hOT 50 prO+

we have reviewed the Hot 50 5G from Infinix which focuses mainly on gaming and media usage. The Hot 50 Pro+’s focus is more geared towards those who use their phone in a social sharing capacity and is even thinner than that offering, coming in at an impressive 6.8mm – the thinnest in the world as a matter of fact! And, as with the Hot 50 5G, they’ve packed an awful lot in to that tiny space.

Designed for more every-day use, the Hot 50 Pro+ has been constructed using Corning Gorilla glass, making it pretty tough and resistant to drops, scratches and breakage from bending. They’ve also utilised ultra-crystalline graphite to help with cooling, improving the overall thermal and cooling capability by 20% so this is far less likely to overheat while in your hands, useful given how thin this thing is. The screen refresh rate is a useful 120 Hz, ideal for viewing movies or when gaming. One particular function I like however is the dual camera. This basically means you can record both in front and behind at the same time, a very useful feature for those social occasions you want to capture or creative content where you don’t want to miss a moment.

There also elements of practicality built in with the screen being wet and grease resistant as well as being certified as a low blue light device, saving your eyes from excessive fatigue. I also like the Always-On Display which allows you to pick and choose what is displayed when your phone is locked, reducing the need to unlock all the time. The charging is super-efficient with the ability to get from 1% to 50% in just 26 minutes if you switch on the Hyper mode for those moments when you really need your phone.

IFI audIO ZeN blue 3

IFI Audio have knocked out some pretty good DAC’s at fair price points, having won multiple awards for units under £200. With a focus on quality engineering and wired connections, their devices have a habit of ensuring your audio comes out crisp and clear, just as the artist intended. This is the first wireless DAC of theirs I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing (definitely not in the under £200 range this one!), having just dealt with the wired versions in the past and, it’s fair to say, I’m impressed, mainly due to the addition of aptX Lossless.

What’s that then? It’s a Bluetooth Codec that boasts a bitrate of 1200 kbps and is the first and only codec that can transmit CD quality audio without losing data through compression. Considering how much IFI Audio care about getting their sound quality spot on, the very fact that they are happy launching a DAC with wireless connectivity speaks volumes of what this codec can achieve. For those that don’t yet have aptX Lossless, they’ve also got backwards compatibility covered with all the major Current Bluetooth codecs able to work on this unit. So, just connect the Zen Blue 3 to your player and hook up your headphones/speakers/ear buds/whatever as you normally do with Bluetooth and away you go. No more wired connection dictating where you or your DAC sits, enjoy the freedom!

There’s more than just the Bluetooth however. You can still connect with wired devices if you wish with 96kHz/24 bit audio with a USB-C connection or 192kHz/24 bit audio with SPDIF via 4.4 balanced or RCA analogue and if you have a balanced audio set up you’ll get significantly reduced signal noise and crosstalk between channels due to the balanced circuitry. There’s not much more you could want form a DAC in all honesty and it’s really not that expensive either, sweet!

It seems that every time I turn on the news these days, someone else has made a significant find using a metal detector. Probably to do with living in East Anglia with its rich history and plenty of flat land making things somewhat easier for detectorists, especially amateurs starting out. And that’s who the KGM01 from Kaiweets is aimed at, those who are just starting or looking for a light hobby.

You get the basics to get you started included in the kit: A fold-down shovel, finds bag, batteries, wired headphones, a carry case for the detector for when it is taken apart and, of course, the metal detector itself. This comes with a decently sized coil (just 12” in diameter) that is waterproof, allowing you to detect in shallow water. Just make sure everything is secure before you start as nothing else is waterproof! The detector has 6 modes for you to work with –All Metal, Disc Mode (sequentially remove unwanted metal items), Notch Mode (similar to Disc but allows you to customise which metals you want removed), Memory Mode (specify the type of metal), Coins Mode (I think you can figure this one out!) and Pinpoint Mode (more accuracy when trying to locate your target). The display is a decent size and fairly straight-forward to navigate, easy for beginners to get to grips with and includes such information as target depth, battery life and which mode you are currently in. You can also adjust the depth and sensitivity settings.

The shaft is adjustable from 21”- 40” so should suit all heights, including kids, although at around 3Kg’s in weight, prolonged use will likely end up with very tired arms – be prepared to just go where you’re told and do all the heavy lifting! But its simplicity should hopefully make detecting with the little ones an enjoyable affair, have fun! a g OOd beg INN er ’ s k IT, I deal FOr Casual deT eCTOr IsTs Or T hOse J us T wa NTINg a l ITTle bIT OF Fam Ily F u N wheN ON hOl I day.

QuIeTON 3.1

Some people, my husband for one, could fall asleep in the middle of a building site, no amount of noise will prevent him nodding off when he’s tired, however some people need peace and quiet to drift off. Life isn’t always that tranquil, outside traffic, snoring partners, noisy neighbours and shift working can all make switching off rather difficult, the QuietOn 3.1 earbuds offer a way of shutting out the noise without simply replacing it with music or white noise. These little earbuds use active noise cancelling (ANC) to block out the world around you designed specifically for sleeping, this means they have been created around the ear’s anatomy. Standard earbuds are shaped to fit inside the concha, these can stick out of the ear and make things uncomfortable for side sleepers whereas the QuietOn 3.1’s are the smallest earbuds for sleeping. They weigh just 1.8g and are around three times smaller than Apple Airpods Pro and tuck neatly inside the ear eliminating pressure when laying on your side. There are four pairs of ear tips to choose from (XS, S, M, L) all made from a soft foam for a secure fit and provide some passive noise cancelling, they are unlikely to fall out overnight. The ANC uses a tiny microphone that takes a sample of the noise and then uses active electronics inside the earbud to create a phase-shifted and equalized sound which is then played through the speaker to cancel out the original noise. The rechargeable battery is little but can still last up to 28hrs from one charge which is about three nights sleep, but with the addition of the charging case you can get a full week before having to connect it to the mains. The QuietOn 3.1 are easy enough to use, they switch on automatically when removed from the charging case. If you are used to foam earplugs you will notice them in the ear more, however we found they were comfortable and got used to them over a few nights. The noise cancelling is really effective, if there is a lot of different and loud background noises, camping at a festival for example, it isn’t completely shut out, but it is greatly reduced to a level that’s easy to switch off from. As well as being great for sleep there are other moments in the day the QuietOn 3.1 are useful, focusing on work from home in a busy house, taking some time out for meditation, tai chi, worship, anything that requires a degree of calm and focus. The QuietOn 3.1 do not come cheap but there is no price that can be put on getting a good night’s sleep and there is something incredibly empowering knowing you carry instant serenity in your pocket.

If you want something even smaller the RT65 might be worth a look, at 65% layout this keyboard has 67 keys and offers a compact and efficient layout that cuts out the function row and numpad while retaining essential navigation keys. The gasket mount structure significantly reduces the harshness of bottom-outs during typing, making it a comfortable experience, even during extended sessions.

It comes with the detachable mini display and versatile joystick design following the footsteps of EPOMAKER RT100, the RT65 offers high levels of customisation and functionality. This detachable mini display is a cute addition that can be used for showcasing useful data such as the date, time, battery status and even your favourite anime GIFs. The display can be removed to reveal a hidden port for the 2.4GHz wireless receiver. The traditional knob has been replaced with the RT65 joystick that controls volume with a simple up-and-down motion and mutes with a press down, this joystick is fully customisable via the EPOMAKER Driver, allowing you to tailor its functions to suit your specific needs.

The RT65 features five layers of sound and feel-enhancing materials, including Poron sandwich foam, IXPE switch pads, socket foam, PET film, and case foam. This, combined with the gasket mount, dampen vibrations, soften keystrokes, and minimize noise, making it a tactile and satisfying typing experience. The finely tuned plate-mounted stabilisers further reduce unwanted rattling, ensuring every key press is consistent and enjoyable.

The Tri-Mode Connectivity supports three connectivity options, Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4GHz wireless, and Type-C wired, making it versatile for various scenarios, it can also be connected to three devices simultaneously via Bluetooth for seamless multitasking capabilities. Customisation is easy thanks to the hot-swappable PCB, allowing you to easily change switches without soldering, the Cherry profile keycaps provide an ergonomic typing angle and the PBT material ensures durability and oil resistance keeping things clean over time.

The RT65 is equipped with adjustable two-stage feet wrapped in silicone, enabling you to set the keyboard at various typing angles to suit you, the N-key rollover (NKRO) accurately registers multiple simultaneous key presses, essential for gaming. The keyboard's south-facing RGB LEDs are designed to enhance visibility from the operator's perspective, they feature 16 default lighting patterns and endless customisation options available through the EPOMAKER driver. The RT65 is excellent value for money, it is compact with endless customisation options whilst the robust build and satisfying type experience make it the go to keyboard for years to come.

Big house? Big family? Probably got teenagers? Then you’re bound to be familiar with the cry of “I need more WiFi! Who’s using up all the bandwidth?!” combined with a younger person’s life crumbling around their ears as they’re cut off from the only thing that matters… Yep, I’ve been there! And what I would have given for something like this back then. Sometimes, no amount of Broadband speed can make it happen when you’re all trying to get online and a booster needs to be considered.

In comes the Devolo Magic 2 Wi-Fi 6. Put simply, it uses the latest available technology to allow multiple users simultaneous access to the Wi-Fi where-as previous versions (Wi-Fi 5 or less) tended to ‘queue’ multiple devices, leading to a lack of connection. The main LAN adapter plugs in to the wall and you then connect the ethernet cable from your router to the adapter. Plug the

Wi-Fi adaptors in and they connect up within minutes. It’s that easy! Apparently, it can increase the speed of the Wi-Fi connection by up to 50% over Wi-Fi 5 (up to 1800 Mbps according to the blurb) and utilises ‘Mesh’ technology to keep all your devices happily connected (not to mention the younger family members…).

The Wi-Fi adaptors also have LAN sockets so you have even more options and the signal is good enough to get through those pesky walls that have always been the bane of getting online, especially in larger houses. And, the bit I like best is the fact that it utilises OFDMA technology to break information in to small data packets, making online gaming that much smoother! It sounds great and could potentially solve a LOT of problems at home but it’s a bit pricey. Could be money well spent though!
