An Extraordinary Auction of Antique Dolls Featuring the Legendary Collection of Alice O’Neill Avery
T
he family of legendary collector, Alice O’Neill Avery, came to southern California in the latter decades of the 19th century, settling in the orange groves south of Los Angeles, in what came later to be known as Orange County. The sixth-generation Californian grew up in the heyday of early Hollywood glamour, with parties at the Orpheum Theatre on Broadway featuring flame swallowers and magic tricks, with celebrations at the famed Coconut Grove, and with schooling at Marymount where she made friends that have lasted her lifetime. In 1987, the Los Angeles Times lauded her in an article titled “Philanthropist Celebrates 70 Good Years”, and her many friends and family were noted. What the article did not mention was that in the decades beginning in the 1940s and 1950s, Alice Avery had begun to gather a noteworthy collection of dolls, dollhouses and miniatures. After her children were raised, the empty nest syndrome sent her on a quest for a new interest. Wandering through Bullock’s department
store one day she came upon an exhibit of Lenci dolls, became fascinated with their lively colors and imaginative detail, and began a collection that quickly moved backward from the “new” Lenci’s of that decade to rare models from the 1920s and 1930s. As all collections do, one thing led to another and another and another. Her friend Jackie McMahon who later founded the prestigious Angel’s Attic Doll Museum in Santa Monica, inspired Alice Avery in the collection of antique dollhouses and miniatures. And of course, dollhouses must have little people so Alice Avery began a quest for rare mignonettes and small dolls, and that, quite simply, led to the acquisition of French bébés and French poupées. So notable was the dollhouse collection that many of Alice Avery’s dollhouses have been featured in Evelyn Ackerman’s classic book The Genius of Moritz Gottschalk. The dollhouses, dolls and miniatures from the Alice O’Neill Avery collection are featured in this catalog, with due homage to a prescient and tasteful collector.
