Pressed bisque socket head with plump lower cheeks, brown glass enamel inset eyes, dark eyeliner, lushly painted dark curly lashes, mauve blushed eye shadow, brush-stroked and feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with outlined pale lips, pierced ears, blonde lambswool wig over cork pate, French composition and wooden eight-loose-ball-jointed body with straight wrists, costume included. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 5 (head) Jumeau Medaille d’Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1878. 3. Fine Early Cabinet with Hand-Painted Fragonard Genre Scenes and Decorative Garlands 24” (61 cm.) The wooden cabinet with rounded front is finished in patinated gilt and hand-painted Fragonard scenes on three panels, the largest depicting an 18th century lady and lord with large wooden birdcage. There is a gilded metal edging at the crown, painted garlands of flowers, and glass shelving on the interior. Excellent condition. French, 1800s. $1200/1700

The carved wooden chair has ebony finish with gilded stenciling and accents, and is upholstered in original hand-knotted tufted gold silk with woven banding. The wooden vitrine with beautifully grained and matched rosewood veneers has graceful curved front wooden and glass panels, and a fitted interior of tufted silk in rich magenta color. 9. Wonderful All-Original French “Mignonette Creche” with Original Box Room 17” w. x 8” h. x 12” d. A light wood box is covered in lithographed paper and unfolds to form a nursery with white paper-covered wall, faux tile floor and faux windows at the back. A pair of double-arm gas lamps are arranged on the back wall and an unusual circular “table” with cut-out center fills the center of the room. There are four beautifully crafted soft metal cradles with canopy tops, painted original cream and gold, and richly fitted with lace and silk. A bisque-head governess stands attentively at the back, and two small bisque-head girls stand inside the table circle. An original blue banner “Mignonette Creche, Paris E.G.” is on the back wall, and a matched pair of framed prints decorates the side walls. Near mint original unplayed with condition. Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate with extra articulation allowing the head to also tilt forward and side-to-side in a realistic manner, brilliant cobalt blue glass inset eyes, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with center accent line on pale lips, ears pierced into head, brunette mohair wig over cork pate, kid poupée body with gusset jointing at hips and knees, bisque arms to above the elbows with sculpted curled fingers. 18. French Miniature Maitrise Chest with Bronze Trim and Miniature Domed Vignette 10� (25 cm.) h. chest. 5� h. dome. The wooden chest has inlay rosewood panels with pencilstriping outline, one drawer with dovetailed construction, one faux drawer front, hinged lift-top with red velvet interior lining, and bronze mounts and hardware. Along with a miniature cast wax vignette of three children hidden in a tree trunk watching a passing swan, on original base with hand-blown glass dome. Generally excellent, some few flakes on wax. All-bisque Kewpie with classic features of topknot, forelock, sideglancing googly eyes, blue wings, impish smile; with impressed O’Neill on the feet and a paper red heart label, preserved in original (worn) box. Along with a pair of Kewpie Huggers costumed as bride and groom; he with crepe paper suit and tall top hat. Generally excellent. Germany, Kewpie designed by Rose O’Neill, circa 1912. $300/500

Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1877, the eagerly sought model is known for having so-called “wrap-around” eyes rendered most endearing as a counterbalance to soft tentative painting of features. Of finest maple with tiger-striped luxury graining, the cabinet features a 12-pane upper cabinet with double doors above a closed door cabinet base, and is enhanced with cherry inlaid escutcheons and pegging, According to a handwritten note included with the cabinet, it was purchased from Paul Reese of Dayton Ohio in 1989 who had bought it from the descendents of its 19th century maker, Robert McCaskey of Gallia County, Ohio. The availability of tiger maple wood was evidently a key asset of McCaskey, as a full size corner cupboard of tiger maple made by him is also known to exist. Fine original condition.
