A Circle of Dolls”, on the premiere auction weekend of Theriault’s 50th anniversary, captures in its theme the essential heart of collecting. That is, that each collector is the keeper of a doll for only a certain time in history, with the obligation of cherishing and caring for that treasure during that moment, and then, when the time comes, to be responsible that the treasures are carefully chauffeured to others. In a nod to this theme, we especially celebrate the legacy of three collectors who have shared their enthusiasm with Theriault’s, and whose treasures are being presented in this catalog. There was Connie Frank of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, who acquired many fine treasures from Theriault’s, and then shared generously with others, not only her knowledge, but also the warmth of her home and her friendship. There was Evelyn Ackerman, whose sense of artistry, coupled with historical research, aided in her authorship of many important doll reference books such as Under The Big Top, and led her to rare discoveries in the work of Schoenhut, the early 20th century toy and dollmaker. And there was Marilyn Parsons, who pursued the study of early cloth dolls, especially those of American studio doll makers, and so generously shared her knowledge. We are proud to handle the auction of these collections, as well as the collection of Martha Thompson dolls from the single owner in Connecticut who has owned these dolls for nearly 60 years, for the family of the collector of outstanding early teddy bears featured in this auction, and for other private collectors who choose to remain private, but, in the true spirit of collecting, wish their treasures to now move into the hands of others who will cherish them also. Truly, the circle of dolls is, in reality, the circle of human connection. x

All-cloth doll with pressed and oil-painted facial features and hair, soft curls framing the face, grey/blue upper glancing eyes with spiral threading, black and brown upper eyeliner, accented nostrils, closed mouth, stitch-jointing at shoulders, separately-stitched thumbs, disc-jointing at hips. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Kathe Kruse Germany (feet). Comments: Kathe Kruse, Series I, circa 1915. Value Points: pristine condition of the appealing wistful character, beautifully-painted face, wearing original costume and added apron, hankie and shawl. $2000/2500 3.

2. Rare German Paper Mache Toy of Rural Scene 5â&#x20AC;? (13 cm.) Arranged upon a base with kid bellows is a scene comprising wooden cottage with painted windows and doors, flower pots arranged on shelf in front of which is standing a paper mache woman who is feeding a large and colorful rooster and two little hens. Condition: generally excellent, bellows not functioning. Comments: Germany, circa 1880. Value Points: wonderfully detailed toy with colorful elements. $400/500

4. Very Rare American Wooden Schoenhut Girl, Model 106, with Carved Hair and Bonnet 16” (41 cm.) All-wooden doll with socket head, carved hair with forelock and side curls peeking from beneath the sculpted cap, intaglio blue eyes, white eyedots, fringed brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with center accent line, wooden spring-jointed body, antique costume including Schoenhut shoes. Condition: generally excellent, few tiny flakes on bonnet. Marks: Schoenhut Doll Pat. Jan 17, ‘11 USA. Comments: Schoenhut, introduced in 1912 and made for four years only, the very rare carved bonnet girl was the last of the carved hair girls made by Schoenhut. Value Points: fine original painting is wonderfully preserved, the hat decorated with classic yellow and red flowers and green leaves, with gilt banding. $1800/2500

5. German Bisque Googly with Astonished Expression by Goebel 7” (18 cm.) Solid domed bisque socket head, sculpted pixie-like golden hair, painted extra-large googly eyes gazing to the right, painted curly upper lashes, dot brows, O-shaped mouth with defined space between the lips, composition five-piece body with painted shoes and socks, antique costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (Goebel crown symbol) 12/0 x Germany. Comments: Goebel, circa 1920. Value Points: wonderful expression with wide-eyed look mirrored by shape of mouth. $300/500

6. German Bisque Googly, 221, by Kestner with Original Toddler Body 11” (28 cm.) Bisque socket head, large blue glass googly sleep and side-glancing eyes, dark eyeliner, painted upper lashes, side-stroke brows with ochre outline, tiny pug nose, closed mouth with impish smile, brunette mohair wig, composition and wooden ball-jointed body with side-hip jointing. Condition: generally excellent.

Marks: C made in Germany 7 JDK 221 Ges Gesch. Comments: Kestner, circa 1912, the model was inspired by Rose O’Neill’s composition-bodied Kewpie which was also made by Kestner. Value Points: the beloved imp is here in most appealing size, has choice bisque and painting, original body and body finish, and original costume including shoes. $2800/3500

All-felt doll, swivel head with pressed facial features, center facial seam, pronounced nose, black small bead eyes, long pointy nose, painted mouth and cheek blush, stitched large ears, cropped short mohair hair behind bald crown, elongated slender torso and legs, bony-shaped legs, over-sized feet with leather shoes. Condition: generally excellent, one tiny face moth hole, three small moth holes at back of jacket. Marks: (original Steiff metal button with underscored F). Comments: Steiff, circa 1915, from their early character doll series, the model known as Professor.Value Points: rare early model with original costume, button in ear. $1200/1600

8. Pair, German Felt Character Children by Steiff in Original Costumes 11” (28 cm.) Each is all-felt with swivel head, pressed facial features with center seam face, painted smiling lips, disc-jointing at shoulders and hips. She has light brown mohair wig with side curls, black bead eyes, and is wearing original 8. undergarments and shoes, (non-original) vintage dress; he has cropped short white mohair wig, blue glass eyes and is wearing original green wool felt suit with striped cotton shirt and felt shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (each with Steiff metal button with underscored F). Comments: Germany, Steiff, circa 1915. 10. Wonderful Pair of Early German Felt Character Dolls by Steiff as Bride and Groom

Marks: Steiff (metal button on groom with underscored F). Comments: Steiff, circa 1910, the dolls are being sold from the original Pennsylvania family estate where they were costumed in commemoration of an early 1900s wedding. Also included is the original costume of man, including vest, pants, and wooden sandals stamped “Steiff ”. Value Points: wonderful pair enhanced by his highly-characterized features, the happy couple are wonderfully-preserved in fine tailor-made costumes, he with ivory silk vest, fine woolen formal suit, boutonniere, top hat, and she with ivory satin gown with coronet of lilies of the valley matching her bouquet, and extended train. $4000/5500

18. Wonderful Petite French Miniature Porcelain Dinnerware in Original Presentation Box 8” (20 cm.) l. box. 2 ½” tureen. An octagon-shaped wooden box decorated with velvet, lithographed paper and gilt papers, hinges open to reveal well-fitted interior containing original porcelain miniature dishes with mauve scroll work and gilt edging, the dishes still tied into their original backing with mauve silk bows. Excellent condition. French, circa 1870. $600/800

Including firm-sided ovoid-shaped necessaire with ornamental velvet and embossed leather cover, bail handles, fitted interior with tiny bone awl and thimble, and metal scissors. Along with a glass-top box with gilt edging containing six faux-tortoise hair combs in petite size for poupées, each comb different; and with a pair of 4” brown kidskin gloves. Excellent condition. 22. French All-Bisque Mignonette, Size 0, in Original Costume 5” (13 cm.) Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque torso, cobalt blue glass eyes, singlestroke brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with pertly-shaped lips, blonde mohair wig with extended braid, peg-jointed bisque arms and legs, painted white ribbed stockings and black two-strap shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: for the French market, circa 1890. Value Points: most endearing expression, wearing antique red silk dress with lace trim and silk-covered buttons. $500/700

Bisque swivel head on kidedged bisque shoulderplate, large grey glass enamel inset eyes with darker grey outer rims, painted lashes, arched feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with delicately-accented lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, French kid poupée body with shapely torso, gusset-jointing at elbows, hips and knees. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 4. Comments: French, attributed to Jumeau, circa 1875. Value Points: beautiful expression with luminous eyes, original wig, sturdy body, wearing original silk couturier costume, bonnet, undergarments, leather boots. $2800/3500

Comments: Martha Thompson, 1953, the doll is wearing couturier gown created for this doll by Martha Yeske, a close friend of Martha Thompson; the doll was acquired by its present owner from Martha Yeske nearly 60 years ago. Value Points: rare version of the portrait queen, having sculpted crown and sculpted necklace with rhinestone accents. $800/1100

Porcelain shoulderhead of young lad, painted short brown side-parted hair in boyish manner, painted facial features, narrow blue eyes, closed mouth, soft blushing, cloth body, porcelain lower limbs, painted socks and black buckle shoes, silk costume. Condition: Generally excellent. Marks: MDT 53. Comments: portrait of young Prince Charles at the time of his mother’s coronation in 1953 by charter NIADA artist, Martha Thompson. Value Points: very apt portraiture of the young prince. $400/600

27. Couturier Purple Velvet and Ermine Robe with Two Crowns 24. Rare American Sculpted Porcelain Doll of Queen Elizabeth with Sculpted Crown and Necklace 21” (53 cm.) Sculpted porcelain shoulderhead depicting Queen Elizabeth with brown sculpted hair under a sculpted silver crown with rhinestone accents, painted facial features, brown eyes, painted lashes and brushstroked brows, closed mouth, defined throat hollow and bosom, cloth body, bisque arms and legs, silver heeled shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: M. Thompson Elizabeth II 1953. 20

The royal purple velvet robe extends 60” from the back neck to the end of the extended train, with moire taffeta lining, and is edged with a 2 ½” w. real ermine border which also forms a draped collar. The robe is further accented by white pearl-like florets at the collar tips, and the train is richly embroidered with a gold metallic garland centering an embroidered crown and ER. Along with a purple velvet coronation crown, and a silver coronation crown. Excellent condition. From the couturier workshops of Martha Yeske, who was commissioned by Martha Thompson in its creation, circa 1953. $400/700

28. American Porcelain Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in Coronation Gown by Martha Thompson 21” (53 cm.) Sculpted porcelain shoulderhead depicting Queen Elizabeth II at the time of her coronation, with sculpted brown hair waved into curls behind her ears, painted facial features, blue shaded eyes, closed mouth, modeled bosom cloth body, porcelain arms, gold heeled shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: M.D. Thompson 1953. Comments: Martha Thompson, the highly esteemed American doll artist, charter member of NIADA, inspired by the 1953 coronation of the young queen, hand-sculpted the doll which is wearing its original couturier gown made by Martha Yeske of Connecticut. Mrs. Yeske had traveled to a meeting of the Boston Doll Study Group in the early 1950s, bringing along her work on a replica of the young Queen’s actual Coronation gown. At this meeting she met Martha Thompson who loved the costume so much that she immediately purchased it for one of her dolls. In return Martha Thompson gave an uncostumed Queen Elizabeth doll to Mrs. Yeske, which is this present doll. A friendship ensued, with exchanges of dolls and costumes, lasting until Martha Thompson’s death in 1964. The story is related in newspaper clippings of the time which are included with this doll. Value Points: the portrait doll is wearing an extraordinary costume replicated by Martha Yeske from original pattern designs, and according to the included article has 3600 beads, 200 pearls, and 100 rhinestones arranged in symbolic designs such as the shamrock and Tudor rose. The doll was acquired by its present owner nearly 60 years ago from Mrs. Yeske and has remained in her possession until now. $1500/2100 27.

31. Outstanding 18th Century English Wooden Doll “Ann” in Grand Size 28” (71 cm.) One-piece wooden head and torso, oval-shaped face with elongated throat, shapely front torso, flat back, with black enamel inset eyes, dot-outlined lashes, single-stroke brows with dot accents, well-shaped nose, closed mouth with firmly-set small lips, cheeks blush, handtied hemp fiber wig, twill upper arms, wooden lower arms with spatula-shaped hands, separated fingers, dowel jointing at hips and knees, shapely ankles. Condition: generally excellent, original finish is well preserved. Comments: England, mid-1700s. Value Points: the grand size and superb state of preservation indicate its original commission for aristocratic family, wearing fine silk gown with interwoven floral pattern and overlay of arranged ribbons and metallic trim, neck ruffle, undergarments, leather slippers, and with early silk coin purse and elaborately-fitted chatelaine. $25,000/35,000

30. Very Fine 18th Century High Tester Bed with Original Bed Fittings 14” (36 cm.) h. The wooden high tester bed with laced bed spring is completely fitted with golden silk and brocades, the four testers upholstered in golden silk and with decorative metallic banding, the roof top of fine early silk with interwoven embroidery, linen side panels under outer pleated side panels, and with overall braid, tassel and fringed accents including a woven circular crown on the inside roof. Two wooden horses on wheeled wooden platform are pulling a grand wooden bandwagon with original painted red and green finish heavily overlaid with rich gilt accents which emphasizes the elaborately embossed designs including chariot, man on horse and other figural motifs. The carriage interior is arranged with graduated-height seats designs to accommodate the seven musicians. Each all-wooden magician has two-part head with painted hair and facial features, jointing at shoulders and hips and is designed to sit on wooden pegs in each bench. Variations in facial painting include two men with moustaches, one clean-shaven man, one with sideburns and moustache, one man with beard, and two men with goatees; each is wearing original red felt parade costume and wooden helmet, the band leader with variation of jacket. And each is holding a different instrument (bass drum, cymbals, bass horn, baton, cornet, helicon, snare drum and trombone); each drum is labeled “Humpty Dumpty Circus Band”.
