The gilded metal party favor, in the shape of a lady’s desk with slant front is decorated with raised floral designs that center an oval medallion with sepia photograph of Princess Gisela, has beveled glass sides and back, and velvet lined interior. The ballspenden favor, honoring the Viennese-born daughter of Empress Elisabeth, appears to depict the princess about the time of her marriage to the Bavarian Prince Leopold in 1873. Bisque shoulderhead, brown sculpted hair arranged with loosely braided coronet topped by black and gilt comb, and with delicate feathering around her forehead, pierced sculpted ears, painted blue eyes, painted eyeliner and brows, closed mouth, elaboratelysculpted and painted bodice with three tiers of ruffled collar and black bow, new muslin body and bisque limbs, lovely antique costume. Condition: restoration to black hair comb and black bow, otherwise excellent. Marks: 5A 5 (incised back shoulderplate). Comments: Germany, 1875. Value Points: very rare model with intricate sculpting and painting. $800/1100
15. French “Service Thé” with Luxury Porcelain de Paris in Original Decorative Box 17” (43 cm.) x 12”. A wooden presentation box is lavishly-covered with embossed papers and with ebonyframed center panel on the lid with gilt lettering “Service Thé”. The lid hinges open to a blue paper-lined shelved interior with porcelain de Paris tea service for six featuring a uniquely-shaped lidded teapot and creamer, lidded sugar, six cups and saucers, six spoons, sugar tongs, each still tied onto the box with blue silk ribbons. The porcelain is decorated with exotic birds on blue ground, with gilt edges; and a toleware tray with centered design of winged cherub and flowers is attached to the inside lid. Excellent condition. French, circa 1885, the clasps are incised Brevete SGDG, and the box was likely presented in a prestige Parisian store such as Maison Giroux. $600/800

Bisque shoulderhead with slender face and elongated throat, light brown sculpted hair framing the face with thick loose braids and forming into a tightly-braided chignon at the back of head, blue painted eyes, red and black upper eyeliner, closed mouth, blushed cheeks, muslin stitch-jointed body, bisque lower arms. Carved wooden gentleman and lady of the 18th century French court, the pair are allwooden with swivel heads, highly characterized anatomical body features, jointing at shoulders and hips, painted shoes. The lady has carved wooden coiffure with ringlet curls curving from behind each ear and onto her nape, and the man has carved hair with rolled curls above each ear and an extended carved ponytail behind with carved wooden black bow. Each has highly defined individualized carved facial features with outlined painted eyes and each is wearing its original silk and brocade costume with rich detail, the woman with an extraordinary bonnet. Condition: very good, original finish throughout with typical fading. Comments: French, circa 1780, from a remarkable series of dolls created during the mid-late 18th century representing figures of the French court of Louis XVI, and used by members of the aristocracy to story-tell innuendos and social scandals of the day. An exhibition of the dolls entitled “Exposition Costumes Ancien” was held in Paris in 1909 at the Musée de Arts Decoratif in which these dolls were likely featured. Comments: Leon Casimir Bru, his Bébé Gourmand was first advertised by Bru in 1882 as “delicieux bébé a surprise”. Although he described the bébé as a registered model no record of its depose has been found. The bébé has two hollow tubes hidden inside the torso, designed that when a tiny biscuit was placed on the tongue, it would fall backward as though being swallowed, tumble through one of the tubes, and come out through one of the open foot soles. Value Points: exceptionally rare, few models are known to exist, this being an early 1882 model and in superb original condition, with outstanding quality of bisque and sculpting especially notable in bisque hands and muscular bisque legs, The bébé has its original blue silk dress, blue stockings and original unique signed Bru shoes with “trap-door” opening in the soles to re-capture the “digested” biscuit. $35,000/45,000

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: I.R. Comb (incised on back shoulderplate). Comments: Mid-1800s, the India Rubber Company (I.R. Comb) of Massachusetts was one of the first American firms to revel in the benefits of imported rubber, their major product being boots and rain coats, while the production of dolls such as this example was of very limited production. That limited production, plus its natural tendency to do what rubber does, turn hard in the winter and gummy in the summer, explains the great rarity of the doll today. Hidden within a firm-sided cone with amusing hand-painted silk cover is a bisque head doll with doublefaces; on one side is a crying face with blue glass eyes and mouth modeled open as though crying, and on the other is a happy child with blue glass eyes and closed mouth. The marotte has a carved bone handle which is used to move the bisque head up from its hide-away inside the cone, twirl around to reveal the alternate faces, and then retract to hide the head.
