157. Collection of Five Viennese Dance Cards 3” (8 cm.) -4”. Known as dance cards, the miniature programs of Viennese evening parties took the form of books, plaques and other figural designs, and were designed not only for use during the evening, but as memories after the event. Gala organizers competed to design the most unusual and elegant. Included here are an unusual fencing swords and mask dance card, another with Dresden flower and ormolu bow clasp, and others. Excellent condition. Vienna, late 1800s. $400/500 158. 19th Century Birdseye Maple Desk Accessory 6 ½” (17 cm.) Of birdseye maple, the small box is decorated with silver edging and mother-of-pearl bands which are decorated with unusual symbolic figures of piglets, daisies, flowers and a horseshoe; a hinged lid box with built-in inkwell rests on box top and there are two hidden drawers at the sides; included is a miniature ink blotter and magnifying glass. Carved wooden swivel head with flat-cut neck, angular facial shape with strongly defined features, hazel glass inset eyes, richly blushed eye shadow, aquiline nose with shaded nostrils, closed mouth, accent line between the lips, dimple in chin, blushed cheeks, defined ears, sheepskin wig, carved wooden torso, defined waist and rounded hips, iron pin jointing of hips, knees and ankles, cloth upper arms with carved wooden hands and well-defined fingers. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Venetian court doll, circa 1780, in superb costume of lavish fabrics and trims, inspired by the Pietro Langhi painting of lady in festival costume. Value Points: extremely rare doll with superbly carved face and hands, original sturdy body, superb costume of silk damask open robe, silk faille cape, undergarments, stockings with knee garters, fine brocade heeled shoes, elaborate jewelry, and with Venetian costume ball accessories including black domino and Bauta masks made from stiffened linen, black lace and silk cape and pressed wool felt tricorn hat. 161. French Musical Automaton “Bust of Banjo Player with Grand Finale” by Gustave Vichy 20” (51 cm.) Posed upon a nicely shaped black wooden plinth is a blackcomplexioned man with paper-mache head, brown glass eyes with articulated leather eyelids, open mouth, fleecy black hair, carton torso, paper-mache hands, silk costume, black derby hat, holding a four-string banjo. When wound, he turns his head from side-to-side, blinks his eyes, teasingly sticks out his tongue just to the tip of his lips, and strums the banjo, ending in a high sweeping movement as though to signal the finale, while two tunes play. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Gustave Vichy, Paris, circa 1890, the bust style automaton was an unusual variation from the full figure models, designed to appeal to the parlor decor scene. Value Points: rare automaton with well functioning music and motion. $7500/9500

There is an original paper label on the underside indicating its creation by the firm of Nortier located in the wealthy Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine. Excellent condition, all original. 179. Early 1800s Carved Bone and Wood Mechanical Toy 6 ½” (17 cm.) x 4 ½”. Arranged in a theatrical manner on two wooden floor stages are a grand assortment of carved bone people, animals and accessories, along with spinning wheels and fancy columns; there are six various people in elegant costumes, along with three dogs. The toy is designed that when the front knob is turned, it causes the tall man and woman at the back to move their arms up and down. Three have missing arms, the mechanism needs repair, and there are a few chips of bone. Early 1800s, rare and very intricately carved and constructed. $700/900

185. Outstanding 1700s Pair of OctagonFramed Carved Wooden Dioramas 8 ½” (22 cm.) Presented enclosed with original matching eight-sided frames of richest rosewood are two intensely-arranged early crib scenes which are deeply dimensional and multi-leveled, each furnished with intricately hand-carved wooden people, animals and accessories. One scene presents Balthazar, Caspar and Melchior offering gifts to the young baby held in his mother’s arms, while attendants, angels and villages gather around (there are ten people and various camels and horses); and the other scene portrays the simple villagers gazing at the newborn, and offering their simple gifts (there are seven people and angels, plus many cows, goats and sheep). Each scene has elaborate original background, and each person or animal is uniquely painted. Excellent condition. Mid-1700s, outstanding in its fine state of preservation and intricate construction. $4000/6000

186. Pair, Early-1800s Bavarian Carved Wooden Villagers with Amusing Talking Movement 9” (23 cm.) Each is hand-carved wooden man and woman on attached matching wooden base depicting a plump costumed villager, each with hidden hinged jaw and each carrying a basket at its back which when moved up and down causes their mouth to open and close as though chattering away, perhaps bartering their

wares; curiously peeking from the man’s basket is a doll’s head. Excellent condition, original painted finish with fine detail. Germany, early 1800s. $900/1100 187. Rare Early Viennese Marquetry Inlay Desk with Roll Top 10” (25 cm.) h. 13”w. Of finest rosewood and exotic woods, the desk features a rolled front which is decorated with an inlay scene of village buildings, and which opens when writing table is pulled out. There are two lower dove-tailed drawers and further marquetry on the desk top and on both sides. Excellent condition. Viennese, mid-1800s, superb detail of inlay with many-toned exotic woods to define building details. $2500/3500
