Comments: the model appeared in the Borgfeldt catalog of 1929 under the trade name of Gladdie; it was produced in both earthenware and bisque. Helen Webster Jensen, born in Chicago in 1896 studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and in 1928 moved to Santa Monica, California with her husband where the two pursued a career in portrait bust sculpting. It is likely that Gladdie was the only doll model she sculpted, said to be a portrait of her own daughter. Value Points: wonderfully-preserved example of the distinctive doll, beautiful complexion, original factory costume. $800/1200

211. Important Early Maitrise Model Desk with Elaborate Marquetry Patterns 19” (48 cm.) w. x 14”h. x 12”d. Constructed of finest woods, the slantfront desk with lower drawers and carved columnar front with claw feet is elaborately decorated on top, front and both sides in intricately designed inlays of flowers, garlands, and scrolls. The slant front hinges open to a further well-fitted interior with numerous niches and drawers and which is also richly decorated with inlay floral marquetry. Excellent condition. Early 1800s, the very fine workmanship and exotic woods indicates the original production as a maitrise model for fine cabinet maker. $2800/3500 212. 219. Pair, 19th Century Carved Wooden Monk and Nun with Mechanical Movements 8 ½” (22 cm.) Each is a carved wooden figure with defined hair, face features, detailed costume, along with overlying paper mache cape and veil, depicting a nun and a monk. Each has nodding head and hinged jaw, and when lightly tapped on the head, its head nods back and forth and the mouth opens and closes, as though singing or chanting. The figures are attached to original chip-carved base. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, mid-1800s. He has glass eyes under wire spectacles, a hinged right arm at the shoulder and a hinged jaw, and when the pull-string at his back is pulled, he quickly raises his arm to his mouth, and opens his mouth wide to gobble a mouthful of food, while his eyes rapidly blink open and closed.

354. Pair, Early Carved Wooden Dolls in Original Silk Court Costumes from Traphagen Collection 15” (38 cm.) Each has carved wooden socket head, inset enamel eyes, closed mouth, strongly defined features, white mohair wig in original arranged periwig or up-swept curls, wooden torso, legs, and lower arms with dowel jointing at hips and knees. Condition: faces have been repainted, structurally excellent. Comments: late 1700s, the dolls were presented originally as theatrical dolls; cloth tags inside each costume indicate that the dolls were acquired in 1937 from the collection of the Traphagen School of New York. The famed Traphagen School of Fashion was founded by Ethel Traphagen in the early 1900s and she is widely considered the pioneer of American fashion. To enhance the student’s vision of fashion she collected widely in historical fashion, textiles, and in dolls wearing historical fashion such as this pair. Value Points: despite their repainting, the dolls are notable for their portraiture, original wigs, and superb workmanship of original costumes. $7000/9000
