17. Important 18th Century English Wooden Doll with Fine Costume and Accessories
26” (66 cm.) One piece wooden head and torso with unusual shaping of face, generously modeled high bosom, high domed forehead, pronounced dark enamel inset eyes with carved definition of eye sockets, painted lashes, dot-outlined brows, tiny closed mouth, typical cheek blush spots, light brown wig with arranged coiffure, sculpted ears, cloth upper arms, wooden lower arms with spatula shaped hands, dowel and pin-jointed hips and knees. Condition: generally excellent, very fine minor professional retouch. Comments: English, mid-1700s, it is oral tradition, but not documented, that the doll was originally the property of the aristocratic Childs family of the Wanstead House of Essex. The doll’s splendid size and distinctive portraiture bearing certainly verifies a lofty origin, and as it was acquired by its present owner many years ago from a private unnamed resident of that immediate area, the legend seems likely. Value Points: the carving of the facial features is magnificent, from the dramatic presentation of the eyes to the strong throat which is softened by the dainty tiny chin point. The doll is wearing superb early costume, likely original to the doll, of Lampas silk with enhanced garlands of flowers, crewel embroidered petticoat, woven stockings, green silk slippers with floral trim, padded velvet bi-corn hat with gilt metallic trim, tiny beaded necklace with prismatic medallion and carries a stiffened Lampas silk reticule. $60,000/85,000
