I remember my mother telling me that they were in a display window of a Steiff Circus scene in the largest and most prestigious department store in Cincinnati...When my father saw the display he was entranced with the little German Band, and, after considerable effort, he persuaded the sales manager of the store to sell him the four little musicians right out to the display window. They were brought home to Toledo in time to stand near the base of my parents first big Christmas tree”. The owner continues to tell of Christmas festivities in the family including Christmas Eve when “the doors of the living room were opened and my
brother and I, my mother and grandmother, entered the living room to see the beautiful Christmas tree aglow in luminous candlelight, with a village scene of miniature Bavarian houses at the base of the tree and the
36
little German band, standing near by, performing magic music while all assembled and “Oh Tannenbaum”. My genial little father, stood on guard by the tree, with candle snuffer at the ready and a bucket of water nearby”.
