Introduction he research of the history of early/ mid 20th century dollmakers has been the guiding principle of noted American collector, Jonathan Green. Primarily focusing on German and American dollmakers, he traversed the Atlantic time and again in search of the elusive dolls from this era and information about their makers. His enthusiastic presence at doll shows and convention and his unflagging generosity in sharing knowledge were known to many collectors. Yet only the most serious collectors knew of his relentless search for previously undiscovered history about these doll makers and the dolls that they created. His love of German dolls led him to the discovery of home and studio dollmakers of the 1910-1960 era, those who began their dollmaking with the materials they found on hand, whether it be a piece of wood for carving or scraps of cloth for stitching into a doll. Thus, the collection, while focusing on the remarkable history of the redoubtable Kathe Kruse, also has wonderful examples of dolls from the hands of Anna Fehrle from the Stuttgart secessionist movement, Brunhilde Einenkel and Else Hecht of the Munich art reform group, Lotte Sievers-Hahn whose charming wooden dolls of the 1930s were in the Erzgebirge tradition and the work of such as Ursel Erbs and Hilde Bartel who, during the post-WWII days, sought to maintain the tradition of homeland skills as well as provide livelihood for other women. His important studies also included American cottage industry dollmakers, especially those begun by women with the dual purposes of creating dolls from “what was on hand” as well as offering work opportunities for other women. Jonathan Green’s studies and preservation of source material and obscure dolls was and is a gift to history. Even more was his generosity of spirit in sharing this knowledge with others. x

BAPS, The Dolls and Puppets of Hilda Bartel and Edith Van Arps Although the charming and imaginative cloth puppets and dolls of the cottage industry known as BAPS flourished mostly in the post WWII years after its founders fled from East Berlin to Bavaria, it is also true that Hilda Bartel had been engaged in the creation of the miniature puppets for some time previously, an important group of which early pieces were owned by Jonathan Green. The dolls have the distinctive construction of the Bavarian examples, but are recognizable by their unusually large weighted bases. These early pieces were likely made between 1935-1940, while the final dolls and puppet production of the Bavarian era ended in 1965.
