As we step into springtime and see the daffodils and the crocuses spring up, this is my favourite time of year, and with the lighter mornings and lighter evenings, and summertime not too far around the corner, this time of year is very inspiring. I hope that you will agree that our front covers are also inspiring and spell out spring with these fun and bright fashion images supplied by Irena Eastington. A big thank you to Irena for organising the photo shoot – these images really are fantastic! We have been privileged to talk with Carolyn Robb in this issue, former chef to HRH Prince Charles and his family, and Carolyn has shared some of her fabulous recipes with us. We would also like to take this opportunity to wish HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle a fabulous forthcoming wedding and to wish them a very happy future together. With weddings in mind we have included Mother-of-the-Bride attire, and heritage menswear brand New & Lingwood’s Director, Simon Maloney, provides his top tips to gentlemen on what to wear for the wedding season. We have a spotlight feature on wedding designer Joyce Young OBE, celebrating their 25th anniversary. We would like to pass on our congratulations to Joyce and her team for designing such beautiful bridal gowns and occasional wear. If you are thinking of booking your holiday we have a lovely article on Boston and The Berkshires, combining a luxury stay in historic Boston with an upmarket spa break in the beautiful Berkshires, giving you a taste of the city life and the stunning countryside. Or perhaps you would prefer a trip to Tanzania – an East African country known for its wilderness areas. Lots to plan and consider. With two royal marriages this year, the British tradition of wearing hats to weddings will be on show to the world. So, too, will the beautiful craft of millinery. Tessa Parry-Wingfield looks back at our hatting heritage.

Put a hat on it

A royal affair No sooner did Meghan Markle say, ‘I do’ to Prince Harry, his royal cousin Princess Eugenie also got engaged. Both couples will marry within months of each other. With the British tradition of women wearing hats to weddings and Royal Ascot horse racing fast approaching, 2018 looks like it’ll be an exciting year for millinery here in the UK. Add to the mix our renewed passion for goods that are designed and manufactured on our shores, and it promises to be a good year for the ‘Make It British’ movement. But, millinery has, of course, been around for centuries.

Through the ages Traditionally, hat-wearing wasn’t just for the rich. The first ever hatters were felt blockers, while the humble flat cap can be traced back to medieval England. And then there’s the iconic bowler, born of the Victorian age. Originally it was designed to be a hardwearing head covering for gamekeepers, but soon no civil servant or banker was seen without one. The brainchild of James Lock & Co in James Street, London, their hat shop is the oldest in the world and is still family-run to this day. Then came the opulent Edwardian era, with large oversized creations decorated with feathers, bows and flowers, and worn by women with pride. But, by the 1960s, with the rise of closed cars, hat-wearing went into decline.

We may well have Queen Elizabeth II to thank for a revival of hatwearing – and the intricate craft of millinery. Nicknamed the ‘Queen of Hats’, it’s alleged she’s worn more than 5,000 during her reign so far. Lady Diana Spencer was also a lover of hats, and it seems like the new generation of royals – like the Duchess of Cambridge – are following suit. From fascinators to flat caps, bowlers to berets, our love affair with millinery is firmly back in fashion. And this year, it’ll be more cutting-edge than ever. Hats off to that.

owadays, with the rise of internet shopping, together with major high street retailers selling a plethora of jewellery, it can be hard to find something that is truly unique – even more so when choosing the likes of an engagement ring or item of jewellery for a special occasion. However, a boutique on the banks of the River Thames is determined to make sure that each item produced is hand crafted and utterly bespoke, so you can be sure that your jewellery is yours – and yours alone. Studio 35, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, was set up by Antony Reineke, a jewellery designer and expert in the field of bespoke jewellery. This pretty boutique in Henley-on-Thames showcases its own handmade jewellery as well as unique pieces from specially selected artisans. In addition, they also offer a completely bespoke service which allows customers the rare opportunity to be involved in the whole design process, from conception to realisation. Specialising in engagement, wedding and eternity rings, Studio 35 have worked on a huge variety of projects, including an exciting collaboration with Warner Bros! In 2016 they were tasked with creating an engagement ring for the 2016 film ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E’ which combined advanced setting and enamelling techniques to produce a Romanovstyle ring fit for a movie star.

But how does the Bespoke process work and why is it different?

Studio 35 can be found at 35 Duke Street, Henley on Thames www.studio35henley.com 01491 574 631

As Antony says, “We are only limited by your imagination – and your budget! Pretty much whatever you want, we can produce. Some customers come to Studio 35 with pictures and mood boards, colour swatches and magazine cuttings, others simply come to us and we chat through ideas and help them decide what they’d like. We have even made pieces for clients from sentimental items such as shells from the beach or a family heirloom which, using our in house technology, has enabled us to create a truly unique item! Stones and materials can be sourced for customers to view and select, and ‘mock up’ pieces are always made in either wax or silver to ensure that ideas are realised exactly as imagined.” The team have also noticed a big change in the types of stones people are selecting for their rings, and whilst diamonds will always be popular, there has been an increasing desire for semi-precious and precious coloured gems. Studio 35 have a huge wealth of knowledge in knowing which sizes, shapes and colours will produce the best outcome for your project. It is truly a special experience in a relaxed and inviting environment. Studio 35 strongly believe that creating a piece of jewellery should be fun, and the outcome should always be memorable! So, if you are looking for the engagement ring of your dreams, or a special gift that is totally unique, perhaps a trip to this special place in Henley on Thames is in order.

Heritage menswear brand New & Lingwood, just a stone’s throw from Windsor Castle Evening Attire – An evening wedding calls for black tie. Opt for a classic black dinner jacket or a dark suit for a sophisticated and elegant look. Don’t forget a pocket square and tie, they’re a great way to add a personal touch or burst of colour. Sartorial Flair – Stand out from the crowd and be brave this wedding season. For something less conventional, experiment with different colours and textures to showcase your personal flair and style –always make sure that the use of different scales of patterns complement one another rather than fight. Never wear more than three patterns together! Dress Code Dilemma – When the invitation doesn’t specify a dress code, always opt for a sharp, yet understated look. The cocktail dresscode gives gentlemen freedom to add personality, push the boundaries and encapsulate everything they admire in fashion while keeping it tasteful. Summer Days and Warmer Climes – In warmer seasons or climates, you’d be best advised to choose lighter weight fabrics for comfort. After all, you don’t want to look like you’re overheated and on the verge of collapse in the photos! Choose high-twist, tropical wools or linens, which are specifically made to keep you cool. Be it classic navy or cooler shades, a crisp shirt in white, pale blue, ivory or pink will set it off to perfection. Keep it Traditional – Traditional weddings call for classic dressing and attention to detail. Guests should opt for a timeless three-piece day suit in navy or grey whilst the groom should be dressed in more formal black tails, perhaps with grey trousers and a light waistcoat – pale blue or cream work well.

Royal Wedding is a significant date in every Brit’s diary. The anticipation and interest around the celebration extends worldwide and offers inspiration to those planning their own special day. The 19th May will see crowds of tourists and locals gather along the streets of Windsor and Eton hoping to catch a glimpse of the royal couple. Traditionally, the procession provides an opportunity for people to come together around Windsor and to immerse themselves in the joyful atmosphere of this historic event. If you find yourself in Windsor prior to or during the celebration, you really should take a short five-minute stroll over the river to Eton High Street, an area with close connections to the royal family. Just a stone’s throw from Windsor Castle, New & Lingwood is a brand with over 150 years of rich English heritage. Its roots lie within Eton; the college attended by both Prince William and Prince Harry. Since its foundation in 1865, New & Lingwood has been dressing generations of Etonians, old and new, its connection with this revered English institution has informed and inspired much of who they are today and characterises New & Lingwood as one of England’s longest established brands. To this day, it serves sartorially savvy gentlemen as well as students of Eton College past and present, globally. Wedding style and etiquette is forever changing. Gentlemen are straying from traditional attire and experimenting with colour and pattern all while thoughtfully staying on prevailing themes and protocol. New & Lingwood’s latest collection owes much of its inspiration to the idyllic representation of the English Spring and Summer in classic literature. Hosting a variety of patterns, colours and materials, the brand offers gentlemen an abundance of options, whatever the wedding. he bride’s mother has one of the most important duties at a wedding. After all, it is this strong female who has to keep her tears to herself and be a social butterfly ensuring that her daughter’s day runs as smoothly as possible. So when choosing an outfit it is vital to pick the right one. It needs to have vavavoom, but not too much. It needs to be comfortable, as unlike the bride there is usually no pitstop for a more relaxed evening affair; and to be honest it’s a day when she needs to look her best as the photo bulbs will be popping non-stop! A matching headpiece and shoes are essential, as is a throw, shawl or light cardigan. Depending on where the wedding is taking place, these will probably consist of chiffon, lace or silk, and don’t forget a clutch bag to hold the tissues! Very often wedding dress designers make complementary dresses for the mums, and our faves are Ian Stuart, Sassi Holford and Joyce Young who ensure as much attention is spent on the MoB. Having dressed numerous mothers, you can be sure to get the perfect dress or twin set for every special occasion. Another option is made-to-measure for those who find it difficult to get clothes off the peg; after all your daughter is only planning on wearing her wedding dress once, but the MoB can keep hers for other special occasions. There is a lot of pressure being the MoB, worrying about body hang-ups, not wanting to look too underdressed / overdressed / mutton dressed as lamb and getting the approval of your daughter, of course. But the key to looking your best is understated effortless glamour, so aim for clean classic lines with contemporary touches – you don’t want to overpower the bride but you want to make some kind of entrance. And finally, please consider what you are going to do with your hair. Will it go with a hat? Anything goes but it doesn’t have to be OTT – fascinators, combs or jewelled headbands can work equally well. And then you can relax.

Celebrating 25 years at Joyce Young he launched By Storm Ltd in a quaint two-storey 18th century cottage in North Glasgow in 1993 and quickly became renowned in Scotland for her elegant wedding dresses and special occasion designs. In a short space of time her dresses were being worn to the most stylish weddings. Joyce’s design handwriting is simple and elegant, she has an exceptional eye for colour and texture and the combination of all these elements makes her designs very distinctive. She chooses the best quality silks and laces and many of her fabrics are unique, embellished with the company’s own embroidery and pleating. In 1999 Joyce opened a second shop in Chiltern Street in London where By Storm became well known for being “different” with clients coming from all over the UK with many flying in from overseas. After 14 years in Chiltern Street Joyce moved to larger premises on Haverstock Hill in Belsize Park. With this move came the change of name to Joyce Young instead of By Storm. The new salon is well established now in its fourth year. The International clients have increased season on season and as well as being the “go to” designer for weddings in North West London, clients travel from all over the UK to choose from the extensive choice of styles, fabrics and colours offered in this unique made-to-measure service. Joyce Young designs are crafted by a highly skilled team in the company’s own purpose built production unit in Glasgow which is adjacent to the elegant Scottish showroom. The team of over 20 experienced individuals are passionate about the garments they produce and go above and beyond to make sure all brides and mothers are delighted with their dresses and the whole experience from beginning to end. The team believe that “our customers are our best adverts” therefore it is paramount to the company that each bride and mother look amazing as they are the ambassadors for the brand more than any advert or catwalk model. Joyce Young’s company have won numerous awards for customer service as well as winning three times the pinnacle award in the Scottish Wedding Industry for best Scottish Company at the prestigious VOWS Awards. The team at Joyce Young work together to bring dreams to life and create bridal gowns and mother of the bride/groom outfits that not only look stunning and fit perfectly, each one being individually made to measure, but also give the wearer so much confidence. Joyce is based in Glasgow and spends one week every month in her London salon. This year the company has expanded in London taking on a business development manager, and a highly sought-after couturier who is very excited about his new role and is making appointments with couture clients who are looking for a unique dress or outfit. Joyce says, “It is such a privilege to have a career that brings so much pleasure to me and my happy clients over 25 years. The pinnacle was to be awarded an OBE for services to textiles which was an amazing surprise and honour. We have built a fantastic team who are all passionate about our customers and look forward to taking the business forward for at least another 25 years.”

s royal wedding excitement hits fever pitch, and as both a royalist and a foodie I leapt at the opportunity to meet with Carolyn Robb, former personal chef to HRH The Prince and Princess of Wales and their young (at the time) sons, Princes William and Harry. I may be biased, but when it comes to pomp and ceremony, and a royal wedding, no one can put on a show like us Brits! And when the stars of that show are the nation’s beloved Prince Charming getting married to his Princess, a glamorous American actress, it is definitely time to party! Every party needs some fabulous food and Carolyn’s cookbook ‘The Royal Touch’ is filled with inspiration, spiced up with some lovely anecdotes of her time cooking for royalty. The book itself is a work of art – the illustrations are gorgeous, depicting wonderful and different ideas for food presentation, and the recipes are all interesting, healthy and very doable! Nothing too complicated, just good, fresh ingredients, with simple, easy-to-follow methods. Food fit for a royal that can also be incorporated into cooking for family and friends, whoever they may be! Carolyn grew up in South Africa and learnt to cook with her mother. Post university she came to Europe and worked in a ski resort hotel in Switzerland for a season before honing her skills with Cordon Bleu training at the Tante Marie Culinary Academy in Surrey. She began her career working as a chef for The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester at Kensington Palace – she must have been pretty outstanding to land this as her first job at the tender age of 22! Just two years after that Carolyn was poached by Prince Charles to join his household where she stayed for the next 13 years. HRH particularly wanted to employ a female chef – he wasn’t just ahead of his time with his food ethos of organic, sustainable and traceable, he also promoted women in what was, especially at the time, a very male dominated field! Carolyn grew up living off the land utilizing what was in season from her own family’s kitchen garden, so Prince Charles’s philosophy of eating local and seasonal, wherever possible using organic produce from his own Highgrove Estate, very much complemented Carolyn’s personal style. Princess Diana was a great advocate of healthy eating too and encouraged her boys to try new foods; Carolyn reports that they were most definitely not fussy eaters with a keen interest in popping into the kitchen to sample teatime treats straight from the oven! Now living in rural Oxfordshire, Carolyn juggles family life, teaching her own two young daughters her tradecraft, as well as cooking for private parties, weddings and corporate occasions. Her expertise and advice is much in demand by businesses for commercial recipe development and she hosts lunches in interesting venues like Blenheim Palace and her old stomping ground, Kensington Palace, as well as being in the process of designing her own range of china! So it was an absolute delight that she was able to fit The Riverside Journals into her busy schedule.

Crushed Broad Bean and Goats Cheese Bruchetta These summery nibbles have brought a smile to the face of many a vegetarian. When fresh broad beans are not available, frozen ones work just as well. You can ring the changes with the cheese, replacing the goats’ cheese with shavings of parmesan or pecorino. They can be transformed into bite-sized canapés by using tiny toasted bread croutes or crisp pastry discs instead of whole slices of baguette. As canapés, they add a lovely splash of colour to a tray of mixed nibbles. Ingredients You will need: One medium baking tray. • 300g/10½oz broad beans or lima beans (1¾ cup) • 30ml/2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 15ml/1 tbsp fresh lemon juice • Zest of 1 lemon • A few sprigs of fresh mint • 12 slices of baguette • A little more olive oil • 115g/4oz fresh goats’ cheese (approx 1 cup) Method 1. Cook the broad beans in boiling, salted water until tender. Drain, plunge into iced water and peel them. This is a fiddly job, but it is worthwhile doing as the skins can be quite tough and bitter. Also, the colour of the beans is much more vibrant without the skin. (If using lima beans, they don’t need to be peeled.) 2. Finely shred the mint. 3. In a mixing bowl, crush the broad beans with the olive oil, lemon juice, lemon zest and shredded mint. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Heat a griddle pan, brush both sides of the bread with a little olive oil and then toast the bread on both sides. If you don’t have a griddle pan, you can bake or grill the bread. 5. Pile the crushed broad beans onto the crisped bread. Crumble the goats’ cheese and sprinkle a little onto each one of the bruschetta. 6. Serve immediately. 7. A slice of very thin and crispy pancetta laid on top of the cheese, adds a delicious finishing touch for non vegetarians. Makes 12

Salad of Proscuitto-Wrapped Peaches with Figs and Buffalo Mozzarella It is always good to have a recipe up your sleeve that can be put together in a matter of minutes. This salad is extremely quick to prepare. However it is definitely a summer dish, to be made when juicy peaches are at their sweet and succulent best. When peaches are not in season, try combining pears with crispy proscuitto and crumbled Rocquefort cheese. An aged Balsamic vinegar and a fruity olive oil complement the stronger flavours of this salad perfectly. Ingredients • 50g/2oz pecan halves (½ cup) • 30ml/2 tbsp light olive oil • Salt, pepper, brown sugar & chilli powder • 2 large, perfectly ripe yellow peaches • 12 slices of prosciutto • 4 ripe figs • 2 balls of buffalo mozzarella (250g/9oz) • A handful of washed wild rocket • 120ml/8 tbsp walnut oil • 60ml/4 tbsp raspberry vinegar • Freshly ground black pepper • Freshly milled sea salt Method Serves 4 1. To prepare the spiced pecans, place them on a baking tray, drizzle the oil over them and sprinkle with salt, pepper, sugar and chilli powder. Shake the tray to distribute the seasoning evenly. Bake at 170ºC/325ºF for 12 – 15 minutes. Leave to cool. 2. Cut each peach into 6 segments. I leave the skin on, but you can peel them for those who don’t like the ‘furry-ness’ of peach skin. 3. Wrap one piece of prosciutto around each segment of peach. 4. Cut each fig into 3 segments. 5. Tear each mozzarella ball into 6 pieces. 6. Arrange 3 pieces each of peach, fi g and mozzarella alternately around each plate in a circle. 7. Place a little bundle of rocket leaves in the centre. 8. Sprinkle on a few spiced pecans. 9. Spoon a little walnut oil and then the raspberry vinegar over the salad. 10. Finish with a twist of black pepper and a twist of salt. Serve immediately

Crunchy Parmesan-Crusted Chicken with Asparagus and Lemon Pappardelle This is quick to prepare, and the fresh flavours of citrus and asparagus are beautifully summery. Vegetarians love the asparagus pappardelle on its own, without the chicken. Alternatively, the chicken is delicious served with avocado, mixed leaves and a lemon and olive oil dressing instead of the pasta. So you get three dishes for the price of one with this recipe! Ingredients • 4 free-range chicken breasts (140g/5oz each) • 30g/1oz butter (2 tbsp) For the parmesan crust: • 40g/1½oz butter (3 tbsp) • 85g/3oz fresh breadcrumbs (1 cup) • 60g/2oz freshly grated parmesan (½ cup) • 15ml/1 tbsp mixed fresh thyme leaves, parsley and marjoram, finely chopped • A few twists of freshly ground black pepper • 5ml/1 tsp finely grated lemon zest For the pasta: • 16 asparagus spears • 200g/7oz pappardelle pasta • 150ml/²⁄³ cup crème fraîche • 60g/2oz pine nuts (½ cup) • 60g/2oz wild rocket • Zest of 1 lemon • A few parmesan shavings Method 1. Preheat the oven to 190ºC/375ºF. 2. To make the parmesan crust, melt the butter and combine it with all the other ingredients and mix well. 3. Remove the skin fr om the chicken. Melt the butter in a sauté pan and sear the chicken, so that each side is lightly golden in colour; 2 -3 minutes on each side, then place it on a baking tray. Divide the topping between the four breasts, ‘packing’ it down well so that it doesn’t fall off during cooking. 4. Bake in the oven for 20 – 25 minutes, until the topping is crisp and golden and the chicken is cooked through. 5. Meanwhile prepare the asparagus. Trim off the woody section at the base of each stem and cut the remainder into 2.5cm (1 inch) lengths. Cook in salted boiling water until tender. 6. Cook the pappardelle in boiling salted water, according to the instructions, drain it and return it to the pan. 7. Simmer the crème fraîche gently in a small pan for a couple of minutes then stir it into the pappardelle with the asparagus, pine nuts and rocket. Grate the lemon zest onto the pasta and finish with freshly ground black pepper. 8. Serve the pasta immediately in a warm serving dish or directly onto warm plates. Top with the chicken breasts and parmesan shavings.

Ingredients You will need: 2 medium baking trays lined with non-stick silicon mats or baking parchment, 1 piping bag with medium fluted star nozzle, 1 piping bag with a small plain nozzle. For the meringue: • 3 free-range egg whites (UK medium/USA large) • 85g/3oz white caster sugar (6 tbsp) • 85g/3oz golden caster sugar (6 tbsp) OR you can use ¼ cup in total, of granulated sugar • A few drops of pure vanilla extract For the filling: • 225g/8oz mixed strawberries, blueberries and raspberries (2 cups) • 225ml/1 cup double cream • 110ml/½ cup mascarpone • 30ml/2 tbsp caster sugar • A handful of mint leaves • Icing sugar For the purée: • 110ml/½ cup of raspberry purée (made by blending 115g (4oz) raspberries with 30ml (2 tbsp) icing sugar and a few drops of lemon juice. After blending, rub through a fi ne sieve to remove all pips, then add 4 fresh mint leaves and blend again.) Method 1. Set the oven to 160ºC/325ºF. 2. Line two baking trays with non-stick baking parchment. Onto the parchment draw 4 circles in each of the following sizes: 2cm, 4cm, 6cm, 8cm and 10cm, (¾, 1½, 2½, 3¼ and 4 inches). 3. Make the meringues: In a clean dry bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff. Add the sugar and the vanilla extract while continuing to whisk, to yield a firm and glossy meringue. Spoon the meringue into the piping bag with a medium nozzle and pipe it thinly onto the circles on the baking parchment. 4. Bake for 30 – 40 minutes until firm and crisp, but do not allow them to colour. Turn off the oven and leave them in. 5. You can make these up to a week in advance. Store in an airtight container. 6. Assemble the Eton Mess: Wash, dry and prepare all the berries Shred the mint finely, leaving a few leaves whole for the garnish. 7. Whip the cream with the mascarpone and sugar, mix in the mint. Spoon the cream into the piping bag with a small nozzle. 8. Assemble the Eton Mess on the plates that you will be serving it on. Beginning with the largest meringue disc, pipe a little cream onto it and arrange some raspberries neatly on top of the cream. Top with the 8cm disc, pipe cream onto it and neatly arrange some blueberries. Repeat the process 3 more times with the three remaining discs, topping them with strawberry pieces, blueberries and top with a single raspberry, as in the photograph. Repeat the process three more times. Don’t assemble the Eton mess more than an hour before you are going to serve it as the meringues soften. 9. Just before serving, drizzle each tower with raspberry purée, garnish with mint leaves and dust with icing sugar.

Eton Mess I love everything about this dish – the name, the ingredients, the endless possibilities and particularly the many tales surrounding its origins. One of those tales relates how an over-excited Golden Labrador allegedly jumped onto a perfect Strawberry Pavlova that was about to be enjoyed by parents at an Eton College open day picnic. This resulted in the now famous ‘Eton Mess’ – a jumble of summer fruits, cream and shattered meringues. Many years later, Eton College was attended by TRH Prince William and Prince Harry. This is my interpretation of Eton Mess, but however you choose to combine and present summer fruits with cream and meringues you will end up with something luscious and indulgent!

Festival Fever From Morris dancing to mainstream…

We do love an outdoor festival in the UK. Perhaps it’s the relief of surviving the long, grey months, or our pack mentality when it comes to dancing and drinking in the sun (or rain). From local bank holiday gatherings with maypoles and Morris dancers, to the buzz and beats of the iconic Notting Hill Carnival, to massive countryside music gatherings that last for days on end – festivals are becoming more and more mainstream. The UK’s first music festival was held in 1945 in Cheltenham. Since then the scene has exploded nationwide. Last year, more than a thousand festivals took place.

The days are getting longer, winter will soon be a distant memory…and that means their heyday? festival season is nearly upon Had On the face of it, the British festival scene is booming. And yet, organisers say our love us. Tessa Parry-Wingfield of outdoor revelling en masse has become a victim of its own success. There are now so fabulous festivals to choose from, it’s rumoured the market for the big weekendtakes a look at how our love many long showstoppers has become saturated. Not to mention our unpredictable weather wreaked havoc last year on ticket sales and profits. But, don’t despair. Far from the of outdoor revelling has that beginning of the end, festivals are undergoing a renaissance – and there’s more choice diversified over the years. than ever before. More than music…. Over the past decade or so, festivals have been so much more than music. Foodie gatherings, beer and wine events, outdoor art and literary shows – often with a musical backdrop – have now adopted a festival mentality. And this trend seems to be sticking. Those in the know say we will see more metropolitan, one-day parties emerge, instead of traditional muddy camping weekends. Junction 2 Festival in west London springs to mind, held underneath a motorway flyover. You can’t get much more urban than that. And then there are wholesome family-fun festivals – such as Wild Tweed in Buckinghamshire, with clay shooting and archery to boot. So, it may not be time to ditch the wellies and glow-sticks just yet, but there’s a good chance you’ll sleep in your own bed when the party’s over. So, what are you waiting for?

Summer 2018: What’s on

The Rearturn of the Bum Bags

R

ecently I was commuting into Oxford Street to indulge in one of my guilty pleasures when I spotted a very trendy young man in the same carriage as me. He was wearing very fashionable sports clothes which he carried off with a real classic relaxed style. However, what really struck me was that he was wearing a bum bag, slung across his shoulder. Now I’m sure he would have a trendier name for it but I remember wearing mine back in the 80s. It made me smile to see such a retro accessory being worn with such modern panache. Going into my guilty pleasure – namely Top Shop – I started to indulge myself in the bright colourful world of trendy bags, large and small, belts, buckles and jewellery. And while I was treating myself to this year’s must have of a small brightly coloured spring bag I realised I had picked up a Bum Bag! The closer I looked the more I realised that there was a staggering array of different bum bags, all colourful, bright, shiny and appealingly displayed like a selection of delicious sweets in a candy shop. It then began to dawn on me how modern the bum bag actually was. A couple of very on trend young ladies started to handle the bum bags, admiring and trying them on. They tied them round their waists, hips and even strapped them across their bodies. They attached belt purses of different sizes and designs to different coloured belts and wrapped them round a plain pair of jeans and slung them around hips supporting a low hung skirt. Whichever way they played with them they looked great, colourful, playful and actually very practical and useful. Since my shopping trip I have looked for and found some wonderful bum bags and am now totally seduced by this year’s trend. I am really looking forward to wearing one this spring. I haven’t chosen mine yet as there are so many different designs around with a choice to suit most budgets. For a real investment and statement Saint Laurent have some minuscule exquisite examples, while Marc Jacobs and Miu Miu have some oversized designs. Chanel have a beautiful vintage range and Vuitton some exciting old school styles. Gucci are adorning dresses and super-smart suits with hipster bum bags with just the right amount of glamour. Alternatively you could always go for a more athletic approach and swing your Puma version over the shoulder. And for those who really can’t choose go with Valentino; its version does both at once. I’m planning on exploring the shelves at John Lewis for a beautiful classic leather version to wear across my body. I haven’t found it yet but in the meantime I’m defiantly going back to Top Shop for a bright and cheerful hip version; just for some spring fun. And as I think about it I can’t help but smile wondering if I can wear such a retro accessory with modern panache.

18 things we wish we’d known when we were 18 My youngest child is now technically an adult and there has been much debate recently, amongst family and friends, as to what we wish we had known that would have made life easier earlier. Here’s the result of our musings – our list of wise advice to all of our young people. 1 Problems always have solutions. 2 Sometimes you have to lose a battle to win the war.

With endometriosis, cells, like the ones lining your womb, grow elsewhere in your body. Each month, during your menstrual period, they bleed. This can cause scarring, inflammation and can lead to fertility issues. It’s the second most common gynaecological condition in the UK, yet it often takes years to diagnose. This wait may be because of the wide range possible symptoms, often more associated with other conditions. The severity of the symptoms, including the pain, also varies hugely and some women experience no signs at all.

But as a guide, the most common symptoms to look out for include: Heavy and painful periods or abnormal bleeding Painful bowel motions or pain when passing urine Discomfort during intercourse Fatigue/lack of energy/tiredness There is no link between the number of symptoms and severity of pain and the extent of your endometriosis. But the earlier it’s spotted, the better your chances of overcoming infertility. If you suspect you may have endometriosis, book an appointment with your GP or your local fertility clinic. There are a variety of successful treatments. Your consultant will develop a plan that’s right for you. Thames Valley Fertility is part of The Fertility Partnership, the largest provider of fertility care in the UK, with clinics in Marylebone, Maidenhead and Oxford. bostonplace.co.uk thamesvalleyfertility.co.uk oxfordfertility.co.uk

5 It’s absolutely OK to say “No” when you don’t want to, or can’t, do something. 6 The internet is a fantastic invention, but anything you put on it can be there for ever – make sure you are happy with that. 7 It’s OK to fail – that’s how we learn. 8 Actions speak louder than words – don’t just talk about it, do it! 9 Trust your instinct – it’s usually right. 10 Good manners will always open doors – rudeness will slam them shut. 11 Learn to cook, and invite friends to eat with you often. 12 Keep fit and healthy – get active, every day. 13 If you need help, ask for it. 14 You’ll always regret the things you didn’t do more than the things you did. 15 When you make a mistake, say you are sorry – and mean it. 16 Words can be weapons, or building blocks – use them wisely. 17 Take responsibility for yourself – the world does not owe you a living. 18 We can’t change the past but the future is a story yet to be written – it’s up to you to shape it how you want it.

If you need more help, Coach on the Couch, Alex Bailey Staines, is available by appointment for private consultations and motivational meetings.

Utopia Spa at Alexander House

Nature is the great healer, so follow The Good Spa Guide’s advice, and head to a spa with a beautiful garden this Spring.

ESPA at Lucknam Park, Chippenham, Wiltshire The Walled Garden at Lucknam Park is quintessentially English, with sculpted yew hedges, herbaceous borders and an 18th century dovecote. Wander through the Rose Garden to the Victorian-inspired Kitchen Garden and the circular Lavender Garden on the west lawn. Discover the arboretum with its 600 trees, visually lovely all year round, and the recently restored vinery which grows produce for the menu. There are 500 acres of countryside to explore, by foot, bike or on horseback. The ESPA spa is set in a glass and stone extension along a lavender lined path: enjoy garden views from the tepidarium beds or the outdoor pool terrace. The Well-Being centre is in a stone cottage surrounded by parkland. lucknampark.co.uk 01225 724 777

The Cliveden Spa, Berkshire Set high on chalk cliffs, Cliveden presides over 376 acres of Grade I listed formal gardens and woodlands with panoramic views of the Berkshire countryside. In the 1960s, the Astor family would host celebrity parties here. Amid tumbling lavender and roses in the outdoor pool’s Walled Garden, Christine Keeler met Tory minister John Profumo, sparking the infamous political scandal. This is now the centrepiece of the brand new and utterly sublime spa. Cliveden even has its own boathouse on the River Thames, where you will find a flotilla of vintage launches. Hop on board for an afternoon tea, picnic lunch or a champagne cruise to Henley. Clivedenhouse.co.uk 01628 607177 Lifehouse Hotel and Spa, Essex One of the delights of a day at Lifehouse Spa is stepping outside in your robe and discovering the enchanting English Heritage Listed Thorpe Hall Gardens. Wander over bridges and gaze over the vast lakes. You’ll see some exotic plants among the native flora, ancient pine trees guarding the garden boundaries, and gunneras dotted near the water. In Summer the woods are filled with bluebells. Summerhouses are named after frequent visitors, such as JM Barry, Rudyard Kipling, Queen Mary and Winston Churchill. The outdoor seating of the restaurant forms part of what was once the kitchen garden; the decorative plants here are edible, including herbs, olives and grapes. lifehouse.co.uk 01255 860050

Bailiffscourt

Bailiffscourt, Sussex Bailiffscourt is a romantic medievalstyle house with a 13th Century chapel, a Rose Garden and a secret underground passageway. The meandering paths linking Bailiffscourt Hotel to the Spa in a converted barn are lined with scented lavender. From the heated outdoor swimming pool and hot-tub you can gaze over lawns to the trees beyond: you may spy an ostentation of peacocks. A large swing hangs from a tree: stop here and admire uninterrupted views over the Sussex countryside, then explore the hotel gardens and 30 acres of private parkland. Just behind the spa, through the trees, is a path that leads down to Climping Beach. hshotels.co.uk/bailiffscourt 01903 723511

Lifehouse Hotel and Spa Foxhill’s Spa, Ottershaw, Surrey Foxhill’s is a 400-acre country estate with three golf courses, cycling and tennis clubs and four swimming pools. The pièce de résistance is the peaceful and charmingly landscaped Spa Garden. There’s a 1.2-metre organic plunge pool (England’s first, says the sign), purified with natural plants. It’s icy cold, so perfect after roasting in the outdoor sauna. There is also a tree shower and hot tub. The large, square lawn hosts yoga classes as well as sunbathers, while an ancient yew hedge divides private relaxation spaces. We loved the old fashioned red telephone box with its two buttons marked “spa” and “bar” for ordering lunch al fresco. foxhills.co.uk 01932 704555 Champneys Tring, Hertfordshire Champneys Tring was Britain’s original health spa, once owned by the Rothschild family, and has 170 acres of grounds to explore. You can wander (or cycle) through beautiful woods, formal gardens and lush meadows as part of your wellbeing break - we once chanced upon a deer in a forest glade. You will find wicker seating pods dangling from enormous trees: curl up among the cushions with a book and drink in the sounds of nature. Inside, the decor is modern, cool and elegant with an instantly calming sense of light and space, with floor-to-ceiling windows poolside bringing the outdoors in. champneys.com/spa-resorts/champneys-tring 01442 291000 Utopia Spa at Alexander House, E Grinstead, W Sussex The Romantic poet Shelley allegedly lived in this luxury Jacobean manor house set in 120 acres of Sussex gardens, woodlands and parkland. The grounds include a Rose Garden, topiary, and a 250-year-old Monkey Puzzle Tree. But the jewel in its crown is the Utopia Spa, with its topnotch facilities and its beautifully designed Zen Garden. Here you will find an outdoor Jacuzzi, a quirky barrel sauna and plenty of loungers among the trees and Buddha statues. Tucked away is a private hot tub area where you can relax and indulge in some forest bathing, gazing at the trees while a spa butler brings you a glass of fizz. alexanderhotels.co.uk 01342 714914 Sequoia Spa at The Grove, Chandler’s Cross, Hertfordshire As you enter The Grove’s 300 acres, you will pass rolling lawns and a remarkable water feature, a series of long rectangular ponds with waterfalls and eye-catching modern sculptures. The ornamental gardens between here and the hotel are striking and extraordinary, with bright and brazen plants from all over the world, interspersed with works of art. There is a Rose Garden, a Vista Garden, New Zealand tree ferns, palms, and ancient Cedar trees, one with a giant disc hanging from its branches. The Walled Garden has a pool, tennis courts and a sandy ‘beach’. The Vegetable Garden here supplies the hotel restaurants and delightful spa cafe. thegrove.co.uk 01923 294294

Chewton Glen Spa, New Forest, Hampshire The 130-acre grounds of Chewton Glen combine highly manicured glamour with New Forest romantic wildness. There’s a dramatic croquet lawn, an Italianate outdoor pool, tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course and, of course, an elegant spa with two enormous pools. If you really want to get in touch with the forest, book into one of their stylish treehouses and enjoy a treatment or hot-tub high in the canopy. Forest walks include one that takes you down to the beach. The large Walled Garden grows fruits, vegetables and flowers used in the hotel and spa: they even have beehives and make their own delicious honey. chewtonglen.com 01425 275341

owadays we are all constantly being encouraged to do our ‘bit’ for the environment and are accustomed to the energy efficiency labels that are on all the white appliances that we buy, as these indicate the extent to which the product we are purchasing is energy efficient, and therefore how environmentally friendly it is. With this in mind most of us, given the option, will probably opt for the more energy efficient rated models secure in the knowledge that we are doing our ‘bit’ for the environment and also probably saving money on our electricity and gas bills. Many years ago now, the UK Government turned their attention to the fabric of our houses and developed a system whereby homeowners could choose energy efficient products for other areas of their home as well. Much work has been done in the last decade to bring new, higher standards to the thermal efficiency of windows and doors and this has now finally evolved to the point where the windows and doors you choose should carry the highly recognisable and understandable energy efficiency labels called Window Energy Rating. Hazlemere Windows, Doors and Conservatories have always promoted the energy efficiency of their new generation aluminium windows and doors and they wasted no time in testing their systems to ascertain what level on the familiar A-C scale they could achieve. Quite simply, the higher the rating, the more thermally efficient the window system is. Using the latest, state-of-the-art materials Hazlemere successfully proved they could provide homeowners with an aluminium or UPVC window system that provided the highest possible ‘A’ rating. Independently tested, Hazlemere’s range of Eco-friendly windows offers homeowners a real choice of energy efficient, environmentally-friendly products. The minimum standard for replacement windows since 1st October 2010 when the Building Regulations were tightened up is a Window Energy Rating (WER) of “C” or a minimum combined U value of 1.6W/m2K. Both UK property owners and installers are now legally required to fit these thermally efficient windows (if replacing existing windows or fitting new ones to an extension etc), as without these energy saving products being installed, FENSA will not issue a FENSA certificate to prove compliance. According to the Energy Saving Trust, nearly a fifth of heat lost from uninsulated homes is through the windows. Investing in one of Hazlemere’s Ecofriendly window systems makes a significant contribution to reducing this which in turn helps to keep homes warmer. Using less energy to keep you warm not only reduces your carbon emissions but saves you money as well. For example, Hazlemere’s UPVC triple glazed windows achieve an A++ rating, having a combined U-Value of 0.99 W/m2K. However, achieving energy efficiency as a window is only part of the story if homeowners are concerned with the overall environmental impact of what they buy as well as saving money. Hazlemere’s aluminium Eco-friendly windows are obviously made from aluminium which has a very positive environmental story all of its own. Apart from having a long life in use, once it reaches the end of its life it can be infinitely recycled. Recycling aluminium uses just 5% of the energy needed to produce the original material plus the finished product has all of the same qualities as the original as well which means it can be recycled time and time again.

W Home Silent Home

ith noise pollution again on the rise across the capital, Silent Windows by Hugo Carter have some good news for homeowners: a way to make a more dramatic difference to your home life than you might have thought possible. There are many reasons to celebrate being a Londoner. But for all too many of us, these advantages are offset by the intolerable consequences of noise. Given our close proximity to trains, planes and automobiles, there are few places in London that remain untouched by noise pollution. And whether you live on the flightpath, or on a busy main road, it’s the same issue. At the end of a working day, there are few things more frustrating than not being able to wind down and then sleep in your own home. And not being able to fully relax isn’t just a frustration. The World Health Organisation has stated that those who have to live with high levels of noise pollution (we’re talking about 55 decibels and over) face the real risk of serious health problems, such as cardiovascular effects and high stress. Staggeringly, in London, that applies to are over 1.6 million of us. So what’s the solution? Some opt for double glazing – mistakenly thinking it to be the best solution available. Others consider moving to the countryside. But uprooting your family can bring its own set of stresses.

Enter Silent Windows by Hugo Carter. This Chiswick-based company is becoming acknowledged as the UK’s leading provider of soundproof windows and doors. Now, even in the noisiest corners of London, they can help you turn your home into an urban haven. Owner, Jacob Figura says: ‘It’s about being able to improve the quality of living by simply changing the windows and having a nice quiet environment inside. ‘You can’t really relax if you live in a very noisy area. Subconsciously you’re stressed and that doesn’t help your health.’ And it’s not only homeowners who are benefitting from their ‘science of silence’. Recently, the first floor rooms of the Radisson Hotel in Tottenham Court Road have all been fitted with soundproof windows. By completely eliminating the rumble of passing traffic, this five-star hotel can now ensure that all their guests can have a good night’s sleep. Homeowners across London can expect an equally dramatic difference – to their homes, and their lives. One recent customer admitted: ‘I honestly didn’t think it was going to make as much difference as it did’. The Silent Windows service starts with an obligation-free home visit, where they can measure the noise levels in your home – and let you know if their solution is indeed your best option. Their surveyors, designers and installers have all been trained by experts from the Institute of Acoustics at Southampton Solent University. And every window is bespoke. Whether it’s a sash or casement window, it’ll be designed to ‘fit’ your home both acoustically and aesthetically. At last, it seems, it’s possible to create the quietest spaces in the noisiest places.

Choosing your kitchen

A

kitchen as the heart of the house isn’t a new concept and for most people it is genuinely true. If you are lucky enough to have the privilege of being able to choose a new kitchen it can be a really exciting experience. However, it can also be a very scary experience. Getting the most important room in the house right brings its own pressure, responsibilities and design challenges. So where and how do you start? Like any decorating or design project you need a vision. For some people that is easy but for most of us that is the first challenge. It’s not always clear what we want or how we get to realise our ideas. Going to look in kitchen showrooms and shops is always a good start. This is the opportunity to think big; go and look around all different types of stores, well-known chain stores as well as smaller independent kitchen design shops. Don’t be afraid to ask for designers to plan with you. Talk through your ideas that you’ve seen and take advice from the experts – you don’t have to choose their designs but you can include their ideas. When you have a clearer vision of what you would like you then have to start being realistic and consider your budget. By now you should have a good idea of the huge range and variety of prices and come to a decision as to what you can actually afford. Establish an overall figure and then start budgeting for the different elements based on your research. This is when you can really start to develop your own creativity and resourcefulness. But you do need a starting point. Focus on an aspect of your kitchen design research that you really want. It could be the floor, colours, units, lighting, cooker, fridge – or anything that you particularly liked. You can then build your dream kitchen around your key feature. Whatever your key feature is, every kitchen needs some units. These can be fitted, built-in or freestanding – the only certainty is that you’ll need the storage. Once you have chosen the look you want you then have to think about how you use your kitchen. What type of food you like to prepare and what utensils you frequently need to access. Ask yourself, is your kitchen just a place to cook in or do you also like to relax and socialise in the room? Do you envisage you and your children all being in the room at the same time, cooking, playing, doing homework and watching television? The units you choose should work around you, not you around the units. Once the units are planned you can then start to really personalise your kitchen. Choosing handles, work surfaces, tiles, different lighting and accessories can be fun and exciting. It’s what makes your kitchen yours and if in the future you want to change the look, you can replace and add a few finishing touches. Follow these few guidelines and creating your dream kitchen can turn from being a daunting and scary nightmare into a dream kitchen come true.

Kate Gould with her

pring has arrived and for lots of keen gardeners that hails the call to purchase tickets for one of the many delightful flower shows around the country. For Londoners though there is only one show that people are most keen to attend and that is the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. With its celebrity guests and an even more high profile visit from the royal family, Chelsea never has a dull moment. It is widely considered to be the best flower show in the world and to exhibit at this show is definitely reserved for the most accomplished garden designers in the industry. Excitingly for 2018 Kate Gould has been commissioned by New West End Company who have partnered with the Sir Simon Milton Foundation to design and build a garden at this year’s show. New West End Company will also assist with relocating the garden after the show to a suitable location in London’s West End. ‘New West End Garden’ is a modern interpretation of the gardens and architecture of a London square, combining environmentally positive technology. A communal garden for use all year round to provide a green oasis in the heart of the West End with positive clean air as well as an energy harvesting technology for residents, workers and visitors to use. The garden is to be a calm space with lightweight trees providing shelter and privacy from the surrounding buildings for those enjoying the space. Colourful low level planting around the perimeter invites you into the garden. Technology is factored into the design to work seamlessly in the space and not to be a token gesture. The garden is a free standing space with references within and on the boundaries to the architecture surrounding it. This is a small, private corner of a larger space. The vertical boundaries are Ashlar clad which reference the classical architecture of some of the buildings present in a some of London’s most famous squares. The garden will have a sunken space enclosed by vertical green walls which creates a relaxing heart to the garden to offset the colourful perimeter planting. A classical water feature will help to mask city noise and create a more tranquil space. Cutting edge paving with integral energy harvesting and clean air (through a pergola) make this garden innovative. A sculpture designed by Michael Speller can be seen from different angles in the design. The key structural plants Kate has chosen to showcase are Acer, Amelanchier and Zelkova which cope with pollution and shade from surrounding buildings really well. Green walls create a calm foliage rich space in the centre whilst planting around the perimeter is colourful with roses and herbaceous perennials - a scheme which references many London gardens. A green backbone that is inviting all year round is formed of Rhododendron, Sarcococa and evergreen perennials.

It’s once children reach around 12 years old that spending habits start to differ.

More Money Than Me

ow is it that my 15-year-old daughter is out shopping nearly every weekend while I’m busy saving for my new spring wardrobe? There are times when I think she has more money than me and according to a recent financial report this may not be completely untrue. Did you know the average income of a 5- to 15-year-old is a staggering £1300 per year? I say income because it’s not all pocket money received from mum and dad but also includes money earned around the house and top-ups from grandparents and generous aunts and uncles. This does of course mean that 5-year-olds receive less pocket money and 15-year-olds earn considerably more but it is still a surprising amount of money. So how do they earn the money and what do they spend it on? Most children between the ages of 5 and 15 receive around £50 a month from their parents. This obviously decreases for younger children and is more for older children. However, children of all ages are earning extra money by carrying out chores around the house. This can average from £2.90 for tidying the bedroom, £3.30 for washing the car to £6.11 for looking after younger siblings. On top of earning money it is becoming more normal for relatives to send money for birthdays and Christmas presents as children today are far more discerning recipients of gifts than their parents ever were. The average 15-year-old spends an average of £25 a week on clothes, shoes, topping up school lunches and soft drinks. Now I know I like to shop and lunch with my friends but I really hadn’t realised the habits I was modelling for my daughter. In addition to this girls spend an average of £88 a year on cosmetics. Interestingly girls’ and boys’ spending habits are pretty much the same until the age of 12. Unsurprisingly they like spending their money on toys, sweets and hobbies, usually up to around £7.40 a week. It’s once children reach around 12 years old that spending habits start to differ. While teenage boys also like to spend on clothes and shoes, they spend 10 times more on computer games than girls and girls will spend double the amount on books than boys. The debate about how much pocket money to give your children will never go away and children undoubtedly will always want more and of course their friends will always be getting more than them! However, the most important and useful aspect of pocket money is how you can use it to support your child’s understanding of money, budgeting and saving. This requires time, patience, conversations, understanding – all things money just can’t buy.

here is art everywhere in Rotterdam, but some might say not much soul. Nevertheless, it stands proud and hopeful – embracing everything that the future can toss in its direction. As a city that reinvented itself after it was blown up in the Second World War, the ego of being second generation is celebrated in the city’s modern design. Home to a diverse population, the high rise, glass buildings and concrete tower blocks punctuate the skyline and provide the basis for brutalist architecture, which sits within the industrial setting of the canal banks. However the city is nothing but bleak and depressing; the new energy brings vibrance, and a young, independent and expressive community. So it is no wonder that the annual art fair “Art Rotterdam” attracts over 26 thousand visitors to the city in the second week of February. With various neighbourhoods included in the ticket price, it is recommended to spend a few days soaking up the varied shows. They range from unusual installations at Intersections, where you are immersed in performance, to video and film screenings at Projections, where artists who don’t normally get visibility in a traditional show, have a platform to present short films.

Contemporary Art in Rotterdam With over 130 galleries taking advantage of the showspace at the main hub of Rotterdam’s impressive Van Nelle factory, the city is buzzing with art lovers keen to check out new talent. Known as the “Young Art Show”, a recent addition to the schedule is “The Commune” which showcases work of recent graduates who are transitioning into the industry, and working on social projects to benefit the poorer communities in the city. Using all aspects of design and technology, this is new talent to watch, and learn from. The other sites not to miss are the Shipping Containers on the docks which are part of Rotterdam Photo; an experimental space for artists who do not have the budget or a gallery to take them to the on schedule showspace. Expect alternative large-scale documentary photographs, and the opportunity to speak directly to the exhibitors. Further photographic art can be seen in the Haute Photographie gallery in LP2 in Las Palmas – next to the outstanding Fotomuseum. Directed by Roy Kahmann, of Kahmann Gallery, it is a reflection of the many facets that the photographic medium has to offer. Designed for the viewer to immerse themselves in the atmospheric display, there are no booths, it is an open space to explore and with which to interact without being led. With more than 300 images on show, this was the first Rotterdam exhibition with a pure photography focus, and showcased living, vintage and new talent artists- I could have spent a whole day soaking up the atmosphere of Bas de Jager, Willy Spiller and Alexander Sporre. For design lovers, OBJECT should not be missed. Held in the charismatic HAKA building – itself a monument for modernity. Four floors are devoted to young and established craftsmen who are showcasing everything from mansize mirrors to recycled batteries, lamps to ceramic sculptures and garden furniture, there will be something to inspire whether it’s a living tree chair, or postcard sized art. Rotterdam is a great city to visit at any time of the year, but during the second week of February it becomes an international hub of culture and contemporary art.

Creating an exceptional shopping destination for stylish living, gardens and interiors. Mary Claire Boyd, Fair Director at The Art & Antiques Fair Olympia says: “Olympia in June is now the destination for all things arts, antiques and interiors related. It offers the chance to find that elusive, truly one-off piece that can’t be found on the high street and that so many of us dream of owning. “The 46th edition of this flagship Fair includes exhibitors who can only be seen at this UK show, while others save and restore their best pieces for this eight day, keenly anticipated event. This will be the first year it will be held within the House & Garden Festival for four days, offering a whole new dimension to the Fair, enabling visitors access to all four extensive events.” Daily highlights tours around the Fair hosted by renowned art consultant Vanessa Curry, two Louis Roederer Champagne bars and a specially created menu at Mosimann’s pop-up restaurant all combine to make the Fair a prestigious and mustattend event in London’s summer calendar. The House & Garden Festival will run from Wednesday 20th until Sunday 24th June, with The Art & Antiques Fair Olympia event running from Wednesday 20th until Wednesday 27th June. housands of visitors from around the globe will celebrate Scotland’s national drink this spring at one of the world’s biggest whisky events – the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. The Festival is a five-day celebration comprising around 500 different events scattered across the beautiful region, which lies directly between the cities of Aberdeen and Inverness. Distillery tours, food pairings, whisky tastings, music and fun combine to provide a packed programme. Visitors will have the chance to take exclusive behind the scenes distillery tours, learn how to pair whisky with food, enjoy traditional music and even take a ride on a whisky themed vintage train. The Festival has been running for almost 20 years and has garnered a significant reputation – so much so that it is considered by many whisky connoisseurs as a bucket list event which they simply must attend. They are rewarded with the opportunity to sample rare and vintage malts which distillers pour only on very special occasions, and the chance to see behind the doors of distilleries that only admit visitors during the Festival. Whisky novices can expand their knowledge and discover more about the amber nectar through fun and interactive events – like learning which single malt is the perfect partner to a bacon roll or how to combine flavours in cocktail masterclasses. As Speyside is Scotland’s most prolific whisky producing region with over 50 distilleries - almost half of all distilleries in the country – the Festival places a huge focus on the water of life. However, there is lots for non-whisky drinkers to do. With music, food, heritage and outdoor activities, it is possible to visit the Festival without touching a drop. Tickets for events are individually priced and are available at www. spiritofspeyside.com and many of the attractions are free to attend. reathtaking art and antiques will be on show at the seventh annual Cotswolds Art and Antiques Dealers’ Association (CADA) Fair which takes place at Blenheim Palace, 19th April – 22nd April 2018. This year is the 40th anniversary of CADA and amongst some of the finest art and antiques the country has to offer, the fair will celebrate the ruby and all things red. For more than a century there have been antique dealers in the heart of England helping collectors to acquire fine art and antiques. The majority of members are collectors themselves and specialists in their own fields, and welcome the opportunity to share their enthusiasm and knowledge. Members base their businesses around their shop, or gallery, but many are world-renowned experts in their fields and exhibit at prestigious antiques fairs around the world. The professional interests of CADA cover a very wide field of subjects including: architectural and garden antiques; books and prints; metalware, silver and jewellery; ceramics and glass; fine art and sculpture; furniture, encompassing fine furniture, oak and country, Campaign, and the Arts and Crafts movement; sports and travel; samplers and textiles and treasures, as well as other decorative items. Everything is for sale, with prices from £100 – £100,000+. The Fair will take place in the glorious Colonnade, Orangery and Campaign Rooms which overlook the gardens at Blenheim Palace. School Lunches y lovely little 9-year-old nephew loves his school lunches. When I ask him, “What did you do at school today?” the first thing he does is to give a detailed account of everything that was on his plate at lunch time, what it looked like and what it tasted like. He doesn’t always like his lunch but he always has a comment to make about it and can describe in great detail what he didn’t or did like, describing taste and smells with enthusiastic gusto. Then and only then will he start to talk about his friends, play time adventures, funny anecdotes and eventually he may mention something he learnt. Both my girls are older now and weren’t part of the hot school lunch campaign that started in 2013 for primary school children. When I look back I am incredibly embarrassed by the marmite sandwiches that went to school every day, accompanied by a few raw vegetables, packet of crisps and biscuit bar. I was very fortunate to have happy healthy eaters who enjoyed experimenting with different foods at home but I just didn’t have the time to prepare exciting packed lunches. Parents today are so very fortunate to have the convenience of hot lunches but more importantly they are lucky to have the healthy diet offered to their children every day. When I ask my nephew why his lunches are so good he tells me he gets to choose what he has; every two weeks a menu is sent home and he makes his selection with his mum. He enjoys choosing some things he’s never had before as well as the regular favourites – his being the roast dinner on a Thursday. He gets to choose from a variety of meat and vegetarian dishes, fresh vegetables and foods from around the world such as a Chinese menu for Chinese New Year. A healthy lunch isn’t just a necessity for my nephew it is something that he enjoys being part of. He has developed a healthy relationship with food, enjoying different flavours and developing his own preferences and tastes. Not liking something can be as exciting as finding a food he really likes. He is developing independence, social skills and resilience when having to eat something he doesn’t particularly like. Sadly I’m not sure how typical my nephew is as I have heard some of his classmates’ parents moaning about the lunches because their child hasn’t enjoyed the meal. I’ve even heard of one parent who wanted to write to Ofsted because her son didn’t get enough gravy on his Christmas lunch. I’m totally with my nephew when it comes to hot school lunches. Children should be encouraged to enjoy them, enjoy experimenting with the different menus on offer, enjoy the social activity of eating with friends, enjoy the cultural experiences of different foods, enjoy getting to know what they like and don’t like and enjoy developing healthy eating habits from as early as possible.

here’s a way of bringing some tropical warmth into your home this winter with the continuing trend for palm tree and tropical prints for interiors. What started in the summer is now gaining momentum with searches on Instagram for palm tree prints apparently up 135 per cent. Of course the most striking way to make a show with this look is with wallpaper and there are some really stunning designs out there. A single wall in the sitting room with lush greens and bold brush strokes can bring sunshine to the bleakest days outside and the darkest corner of your room. For inspiration find hundreds of ideas from www.iwantwallpaper.co.uk which offers many different brands to choose from. Also check out www. worldofwallpaper.com There is no doubt that this is a pretty full-on statement and not for the faint-hearted with some designs creating a full jungle scene complete with monkeys into your room. But there are many other ways to explore this theme without going too over the top. Choose accessories - a cushion or a bowl or a pretty blind, as we showcase here, to get the look. Most quality, high street stores have these designs on offer and it can be great fun to create your own very distinctive interior looks. Pick a pineapple motif, fall for pink flamingos or evoke the Caribbean with exotic birds. It’s obvious that we are all becoming more adventurous with our home decorating ideas. Be brave and bold out there. Ruth Brindle

What could begin to beat the thrill of a safari? The answer is simple,

a Sky Safari! I headed to Tanzania for the first time June this year, to go on safari, for the first time - two thrills at once. This wasn’t any old safari, a sky safari meant I saw Tanzania from up above in an executive plane, visiting different cities, to then explore down below in a four-by-four; best of both worlds in all-exclusive luxury. At the moment of booking, the Telegraph reported that Tanzania’s tourism was up 15.6%, and looked to grow more, I knew I was on to a good thing.

Day One After a faraway flight to Kilimanjaro airport, we arrived at Arusha Coffee Lodge, nestled in the foothills of Mount Meru, we were met by our bubbly Butler to be, Dennis, who proudly lead us to our private Plantation House. On-site was a selection of shops selling local crafts, supporting indigenous disabled people, so a buy ensures a memory to take home but also does good for the locals.

Day Two We trekked the oldest coffee plantation in Tanzania, learning everything there is to know about coffee from our guide. Later having been whisked away in an executive aircraft, leather clad comfy seats transported us directly to Tarangire National Park where we were met by our smiling guide Stanford, and a murmuration of colourful shimmering superb starlings. A game drive followed spotting towers of giraffes (standing), the national animal of Tanzania, common waterbuck and herds of elephants en-route to the Tarangire Treetops residence.

Day Three Waking up with the sunrise, only to zip open the ‘windows’ to expose your private enormous deck from which to gaze into the mystical landscape, is something words fail to convey. The highlight was a night safari; I spotted bewildering bush babies whose eyes glistened green with the camera flash, as bijou bats danced in the sky to the calls of nightjar birds.

Day Four We were driven to the sanctuary of The Manor in Ngorrongoro. The day was ours to relax, and what better way than with an indulgent massage, music wasn’t required, the birds and breeze evoked an incomparable euphony. Dinner in the Cape-Dutch style grand Manor was as sophisticated as its setting and the lofty library was perfect to have a cup of tea and soak in the atmosphere.

Day Five Waking early for a 6am breakfast wasn’t that hard to muster when embarking on a fun full day of meandering through Ngorongoro conservation area, all 8300km of it. We learnt about the Ugly Five; hyena, wildebeest, vulture, warthog and the marabou stork, all of which we spotted. Returning in the evening, The Manor didn’t disappoint with a rose petal bubble bath, pre private candlelight romantic 5-course dinner for two.

Day Six

Day Seven It was certainly surreal waking up to the sound of grunting hippo’s, but delightfully the norm in the camp, where the river; their home, ran behind our tent. I unzipped the windows to see a bloat of hippopotamuses getting ready to roll exposing their pink underbellies as they did and prepared for the day ahead, exploring Serengeti. A romantic dinner for two ending with a blanket of stars above and an African fruit amarula baked cheesecake, was a sweet way to end our day.

Day Eight Immersed in nature, and rock hyrax having a party it seemed on our tent roof, woke me up. Moses was on standby to take us on a walking safari. Two hippo males were sizing each other up before fighting over a female, they opened their massive mouths as though at a dentist; whoever has the bigger mouth wins, if only it was that simple for us humans! Time to leave, my spirits were soon lifted as we boarded our private plane to Arusha to catch a flight to Zanzibar, catching a golden glimpse of Lake Natron littered with literally millions of flamingo.

Day Nine Waves lapping in the distance, waking up in our private pavillion villa, Omani style – a hint to the past, facing out to the Indian Ocean, a sea of white sand, secluded courtyard to sunbathe and two private plunge pools, was otherworldly. The villa itself had fabulous floor to ceiling French door windows, which when flung open entirely, exposed a picture perfect panorama of tropical garden. A mix of leisurely swimming in the ocean and a spin on a jet ski to get my heart racing, it was time for dinner. As though set up by Cupid, we were led to the beach to find a rose petal decorated dinner table.

Day Ten A joy to rise and jump into the day, we decided on kayaking. Though didn’t time the tide correctly, it was a hoot as we attempted to row on essentially rock, as the water gradually disappeared before us, the Kilindi watchman thankfully came to our rescue with rubber boots to wear as we walked back in the sun, spotting unveiled ocean life at our feet. Last coconut by the pool and we packed to leave, reflecting on our incredible journey…

Ever the adventurer I opted to visit Lake Manyara National Park, named thus for the multitude of Manyara trees, the milk of which is utilised by the Masai to treat their cows for skin fungus, the tempting alternative was a horseback meander through The Manor’s plantation. 11 eco systems explain the varied vistas, though I didn’t spot a tree-climbing lion, famed in the area. As we drove towards Serengeti still spotting fantastical wildlife, we arrived at the Migration Camp.

herever the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are seen out, for public engagements or in private moments snapped by photographers, they are always fashion icons. William has a very easy relaxed style while Kate displays a natural flair for fashion, gracing top designers as well as some higher end high street stores. However, they are not the only members of the Cambridge family that are praised for their fashion. Little George and Charlotte are becoming trend setters in their own rights with many of us wondering how we can emulate their style and where we can buy the cutest outfits worn by the youngest royal members. Over the last 25 years or so there has been a distinctive shift in children’s fashion. Back in the 1950s there was a revolution in teenage fashion whereby fashion-conscious youngsters dressed deliberately differently from their parents. Small shops and boutiques sprung up around towns that catered for the younger generations. They soon grew into larger chains and the high street stores we know and love today such as River Island and Top Shop. Interestingly the reverse seems to have happened in children’s clothes. Until the 1980s children’s clothes were very different from adult clothes. Children’s shops and department stores sold clothes that were specifically fashioned for children. However, throughout more recent fashion trends children’s clothes have become smaller versions of adult fashion. One of the most noticeable aspects of George and Charlotte’s clothes is the timeless quality and look they portray. George and Charlotte are not dressed as miniature versions of Will and Kate. That is not to say they aren’t incredibly fashionable but more that they wear clothes that are beautifully crafted to suit children and the needs of children. Simple practical designs made from the best quality fabrics with small but stylish accents make for delightful Royal outfits. Whenever and wherever they’re photographed, Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s outfits inspire headlines around the world, generate thousands of pounds’ worth of orders and searches for copycat outfits. Some of the children’s outfits are from the more high-end designers such as the British designer Rachel Riley’s outfits worn by George on the Royal tour to New Zealand and Charlotte’s christening; which specialise in traditional smocking and sail boat motifs. And Charlotte’s Pepa & Co dress worn on the family’s tour of Cambridge is very typical of her style. However, both the royal children have been seen wearing delightful outfits from John Lewis and Cath Kidston. A look around the children’s section of M&S and John Lewis offers beautiful timeless and stylish children’s clothing. Smocked cotton dresses, subtle bows, ditsy patterns, exquisite cardigans with smart collars and cuff designs are all easily available. While little brothers are catered for with shorts, mini chinos, cotton shirts and simply designed jumpers. So your little Princes and Princesses can dress in the Royal style this summer without needing a royal income.
