Sassoon launches winter Colour Prestige Service

As the end of the year approaches, not unexpectedly, I often feel that I need more time – a few more weeks to prepare, and certainly in the last few days before Christmas, a few more hours would be a welcome offering. Time is one thing we can’t buy, and it’s the most precious gift we can give. Despite my efforts to give more time, I can be just as guilty as the next person for missing the ‘spirit of Christmas’. I often spend too many hours shopping, cooking, cleaning and preparing for that one big day, and when it arrives I am utterly exhausted and often feel afterwards that I missed the day altogether. This year I intend to do things differently. No more lastminute dashes, late night shopping and 24-hour cook fests. I have made lists and lists of lists and have organised my time in the run-up to Christmas with military precision; I might even buy ready prepped veg! Christmas and New Year will be about the people I love and care for, and spending time with as many of them as I can, not peeling spuds. If you’re looking for inspiration for your lists, look no further than our gift guide, and if like me you’re hoping to bring back the spirit of Christmas, I recommend you nestle down with a glass of mulled wine, a mince pie, and a copy of this issue where you can fill your proverbial ‘stockings’ with some classic festive anecdotes whilst penning your letter to Santa. Wishing you an abundance of time to savour your Christmas celebrations and an exciting and prosperous New Year.

Choosing Shapewear for your Bodyshape

14 the riverside journals

By Jean Ralph

P

arty season is approaching and the usual panic about what to wear descends heavily upon us as we look despairingly at our wardrobe! The weeks have all but disappeared and we haven’t lost that extra stone we promised ourselves we would so everything feels a little, well, snug? Don’t worry, help is at hand, and you don’t need to replace your whole wardrobe either... there are an abundance of shapewear and lingerie solutions that will ensure you look gorgeous as you shimmy your way to the dance floor this December. The trick is to pick the right pieces for your problem areas so we have put a small guide together to help you choose depending on your overall body shape.

Pear Shaped If you have a pear shaped body then you probably carry most of your body fat on your lower half with your top being proportionally smaller. If this is you then we recommend that you choose a thigh slimmer to control your bottom area and smooth out your thighs. You won’t need a waist cincher as you will already have a well-defined waist but you will probably want to look for a piece with a light silicon edge at the leg seams rather than a sewn hem as carrying extra weight on your thighs can be problematic with seams that ride up or cause ‘muffin top’ effects on your legs. There are several brands out there that provide these types of garments, Naomi & Nicole (stocked at Simply Be) carry an excellent selectin of thigh slimmers that will work well for pears. For your outfit choose darker colours on your lower half and brighter colours on top to draw attention away from your hips.

Apple Shaped Apple shaped figures tend to have wider shoulders and narrow hips with any extra weight being concentrated on the bust and tummy. To balance your figure you should aim to draw attention to your bottom half. This look can be achieved by choosing your outerwear with patterns and bolder colours on the lower half keeping the top half in a solid colour. Shapewear wise waist cinchers are going to be your best friend this year. A really good, hold it all in style is what you need to create definition and instant balance to your silhouette. Try the Miraclesuit classics waist cincher and “look 10 pounds lighter in 10 seconds’; this is one of Gok’s favourite pieces and he has used it regularly on THIS Morning TV.

Larger Tummy If you carry all your weight on your tummy but are reasonably well proportioned elsewhere then you should go for a tummy control garment such as the MAGIC Bodyfashion Super Control Brief. These garments will not flatten the bottom but concentrate all their power on the tummy panels and really give you a smoother flatter tummy in seconds. Choose a high waist option as the ones that finish on the waist often create unsightly muffin top effects, the high waist smooths out the additional weight all the way up to the bra line and will give you a much more effective look.

Small Bottom

Miraclesuit – available from Figleaves and John Lewis Naomi & Nicole – available from Simply Be MAGIC Bodyfashion – available at Asos and House of Fraser

Whatever your bodyshape or problem area there is a piece of shapewear to help… just make sure that you always buy the size you are and not the size you want to be! Buying the size you actually are will ensure that the garments are comfortable, will fit well and will give you the smoothing and slimming effect you need.

15 the riverside journals

Most of us wish we could get the weight off our bottoms but if you feel you would benefit from some more curves in your derrière then there is even a piece of shapewear for you. Depending on whether you just want a little lift, or a full on celebrity style rounded out rear then, you can choose from products like the rear lift boy short from Miraclesuit which has a stronger control zone under the buttocks to literally push them up or a full on padded garment like the Bottom Boost from MAGIC Bodyfashion which has padding incorporated as well as some tummy control.

he festive season is now upon us and if ever there was a time to embellish your wardrobe with dazzling attire it would be now – right? Yes and no. Picture the party - an animated plethora of glitter and glimmer, fascinating and seductive outfits fill the room. Nevertheless, the most striking presence is that of the girl in understated couture, pure and elegant lines, no fuss and not a flash of sequins in sight. The simple white shirt is a modest, timeless classic. There may still be a few who see this as a utilitarian piece, practical rather than attractive, but those in the know, those with vision and confidence will see the white shirt as a prop, akin to a canvas set to carry your radiant portrait. The beauty of a simple white shirt is that you are the headline act, the star of the show, the piece de resistance. Ladies wear your clothes-don’t let them wear you!

BEACONSFIELD FINE JEWELLERY 52 LONDON END, OLD BEACONSFIELD BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, HP9 2JH

n walking down Marlow high street you may have noticed a sparkly new addition to the selection of boutiques and restaurants. Peter Ungar’s eponymous jewellery store is his second shop, having owned Beaconsfield Fine Jewellery for the last 7 years. Living in Marlow for the past decade, Peter has been looking for the perfect location for his new venture and is thrilled with his new sales room. The contemporary cabinetry set against antique silver beams, mirrors and a quilted linear wall creates a unique backdrop for his beautiful jewellery. The first-floor is dedicated to Georg Jensen, the Danish craftsman, featuring both his jewellery and lifestyle collections. “When it comes to shopping for a new piece of jewellery, time is the crucial factor: time to browse, to choose, to consider. The emphasis is on personal service in stylish surroundings.” Peter is a fifth generation jeweller bringing a balance of traditional skills, contemporary design and modern technologies to create a unique collection of jewellery within the store. Blend this experience and knowledge with a drive for the highest standards of customer care and you will see why Peter Ungar Jewellery is a destination not to be missed. When Peter decided to open the Marlow boutique, he decided to take the step to create jewellery collections in-house. Working with his general manager and CAD designer, whose experience, passion and creative flair are embodied in every one of his creations they have produced beautiful and unique pieces of jewellery for every occasion. Each individual element of the jewellery is considered and scrutinised before production even begins, the level of detail is truly astounding! This design process means that the team are able to redesign client’s jewellery, bringing inherited or unworn jewellery into the 21st century while creating heirlooms of the future. “We have recently bought a selection of beautiful coloured gemstones, sourced from all over the world. Luscious pink Morganites and vibrant Aquamarines from Brazil, deepest Tanzanites from Tanzania, and unusual grey Spinels from Sri Lanka. These stones are currently being transformed into elegant necklaces, rings and earrings that will be unveiled in-store in time for Christmas.” Peter has also brought some of the best international jewellery brands to Marlow and Beaconsfield, with Messika, Fope, Kiki McDonough, Shaun Leane and Astley Clarke all contributing to an eclectic selection, where there is a piece for all tastes. And if money is no object and you still can’t find The One – you can always commission a bespoke creation of your own. 63 High Street, Marlow, Buckinghamshire SL7 1AB • 01628 485318

hen we think of home, warm thoughts are conjured up, it is a retreat from the rest of the busy world, it is a place to just be. Serenity is something the Scandinavians do oh so well; milky whites and gentle greys evoke a peaceful environment, whilst a focus on organic and ergonomic wooden furniture, as opposed to brash TV and computer screens, celebrates nature, not stress- inducing technology. Where containers such as baskets, boxes and shelves were once solely functional pieces in our homes, now, in the true Nordic character, sleek designs mean they are art pieces within themselves, to be admired. To soften the minimalist look, leather is being introduced more and more; think battered almost antique leather clad sofas, perhaps with a sheepskin rug, carelessly yet carefully draping over the back – an inviting environment, a homely place. Include accents of colour, try highlighting in a lampshade, rug or ornament, the hottest hue right now being blue. Choose from azure, cerulean, cobalt, indigo, navy, sapphire, to teal and turquoise, or play with a medley of them all. Lighting is modern with a twist from the 1920s, and, remember the huge paper lantern balls? Well they are making a massive comeback too, easily lifting the room with a centerpiece statement. Increasingly, Finland is in full focus, and a suave sauna design with slatted walls or floors encapsulates the look seamlessly, if on the floor a fabulous rug will add whimsical warmth. Wall calendars on a gigantic scale in illustrious italics are mounted on the most on-trend, forward thinking fashionista’s walls, both useful and

beautiful, just as it should be. For those of you who have children, an addition to their playroom, which is sure to bring a smile, is a timeless tent providing a private place for them to play whilst in keeping with your home’s décor. Wall artwork speaks volumes when it is giving in to the graphics and monochrome vibe, a balance of industrial and ethereal is what to aim for. When it comes to pretty motives decorating anything from objets d’art to integral furniture pieces, follow fashion with feathers, tonal and linear in form but soft and natural in meaning. With Christmas fast approaching shiny things are a given, so opt for copper as your metallic colour of choice. Whether a vase, cutlery, or a shade, the pop of shine added to your room will be both rustic and in vogue. Busy people will be pleased to hear that cacti are the plants du jour. These easy to care for bursts of green in a fantastical array of shapes and sizes instantaneously add a modern touch. Fabrics should be striped, not navy nautical, but instead go for black and white; cushions and tablecloths make for ideal candidates. Essentially when decorating your home to embrace the nod to Nordic, remember it is your space and you live there, so play around with your own take on this fresh and fluid fashion, of sleek monochrome modern with hearty hints of nature, whilst making your own mark.

hen father and sons team George, plus Ian and Stuart Braham first founded their company in 1985, joined later by their younger brother Alan, none of them could have envisaged the success and longevity this independent family firm has experienced. A tight team of traditional craftsmen have been at the heart of this business where values, both family and business, have been fundamental in growth. Hazlemere prides itself on demanding standards and exceptional service and has evolved into an award-winning designer, fabricator and supplier of bespoke high quality architectural aluminium products. The firm, now operated by Stuart Braham and his daughter Rachel Braham-Hill, works on projects of all scopes and designs in both the commercial and domestic setting in both aluminium and UPVC. Hailed as one of Buckinghamshire’s largest manufacturers of double glazed windows with over thirty-two years of experience, gaining several prestigious awards along the way, one might be forgiven for thinking this firm might rest on its laurels.

We talk to Mark Austin, Sales and Marketing Director to find out how Hazlemere is doing everything but resting on its laurels. What makes Hazlemere Window Company credible in your profession? Our thirty-two-year track record. Which? Trusted Traders, Members of the Glass & Glazing Federation (HWC’s Sales & Marketing Director is the elected Chairman of the GGF’s Windows & Doors Group), ). What is Hazlemere’s greatest accomplishment so far? Over last 30 years we’ve become a significant employer in the region, retaining dozens of staff for decades, plus becoming members of the GGF and being Which? Trusted Traders. How have you seen your industry develop since 1985? Product development has come on leaps and bounds, so that nowadays consumers can buy highly thermally efficient thermally broken products, that in some cases can achieve an A++ energy rating, something the first several generations of double glazing could only dream about. How have you embraced technology in your industry? Combining both trade and commercial divisions as well as an installation wing, modern high-tech machinery plays an integral part in Hazlemere’s wide-spanning operations. Our highly-regarded firm has recently expanded and upgraded their line to include four brand-new CNC machining centres as well as two double-mitre saws. Hazlemere are well known in both trade and commercial circles for their quality and attention to detail. With such a large operation, the team were looking to advance their production process and maximise their output whilst maintaining their strong reputation for quality. “The addition of the Elumatec SBZ 122 and three SBZ 140 eluCam machining centres, along with two double mitre saws allows Hazlemere to fully optimise their profile machining process.” We are constantly investing in our state-of-the-art facilities to ensure we can meet the demand for our services and continue to exceed the high standards we set ourselves and that our customers expect. The new machines from elumatec allow us to increase our output without wavering on our commitment to first-class aluminium and uPVC products.

Established in the early 60s, this hidden gem has gained a reputation for excellent food and faultless service and, having recently gained several awards including a Certificate of Excellence by Tripadvisor and an Open Table Diner’s Choice recommendation, it is clear that the critics are just as impressed as the many customers who have eaten there over the decades. On our arrival we were greeted warmly and shown to our table by a very polite and attentive member of staff. We ordered drinks which came accompanied by popadoms and traditional dips. We followed this with a mixed starter for 2 [£8.95]. Served with a side salad and a tasty sauce, the Chicken Tikka, Lamb Tikka, Sheek Kebab and Onion Bhaji made a delicious and satisfying start to the meal. The Chef’s Specials all looked very tantalising but we took the advice of our very knowledgeable waiter and ordered the Benaroshi King Prawn [£14.95] and the Bahari Lamb [£12.95]. We were not disappointed. The flavours were truly amazing and the mushroom rice, chilli nan and cauliflower bhaji which accompanied the mains all added to the delightful culinary experience. This restaurant offers wonderful food at reasonable prices, including discounts on set meals and a local delivery service. Although quite small and simple, the place is always buzzing and I can see why. So pay the Rajdoot a visit. You won’t regret it.

White Winter Truffles (Tuber Magnatum Pico) The king of fungi and the most expensive food in the world – with an intense floral garlic aroma. To allow their uniqueness to shine, simplicity and exceptional quality ingredients are the rules. They must never be cooked.

Fresh Black Autumn Truffles (Tuber Uncinatum) Black Autumn Truffles’ greater availability (and therefore lower price) and delicate aroma with a flavour reminiscent of hazelnuts and underwood make them perfect to experiment with. Cooking-wise, they can be treated as the Black Winter Truffles: sliced or grated on top of dishes, or quickly and very gently sautéed.

Black Winter Truffles (Tuber Melanosporum) A earthier version of the fungi, with a long lasting pungent aroma and a musky flavour, which supports more elaborate, earthy and meaty dishes. This truffle stands the heat better than the white variety, but it is nevertheless recommended not to cook it: slice or grate right on top of the dishes, or gently and briefly warm it in butter.

There are some traditionalists who would literally ‘cook your goose’ if you served them anything other than turkey for Christmas. Atul Kochhar hopes to change your mind with his divine take on the customary festive fayre. His delicately spiced whole roast chicken makes a beautiful centre piece for any intimate Christmas table.

Atul’s Roast Chicken Ingredients 1 large organic / Free Range chicken Salt Pepper Oilve oil & Butter to baste 100 ml White wine 350 ml Chicken Stock 200 gm. soft Butter 200 gm. Cream cheese 150gm Brioche Crumbs 1 small bunch of tarragon Lemon Zest Spice Mix 1 tbsp coriander seeds 1 tsp fennel seeds 1 star anise ½ tsp black pepper corns 1” cinnamon stick 3-4 cloves 1 tsp. turmeric powder 1 tsp. sweet paprika salt to taste Method Pre heat the oven at 200C. Toast all the spices together, except turmeric powder and tip into a spice blender with turmeric powder and blitz to a fine powder. Mix the cream cheese, butter, brioche crumbs, zest, tarragon & 3/4 of spice powder and season well. Fill the mixture into a piping bag.

Place the chicken in a roasting tin and lift the skin of the chicken and pipe the spice butter mixture under the skin and rub it gently with the hands to spread it evenly under its skin. Pipe the remaining mixture on the legs and smear it to cover the legs of the chicken. Rub some olive oil over the chicken and season with salt and pepper. Roast the chicken for 22 minutes per 500 gm. Baste regularly in between to make sure its skin is moist while cooking. Pierce the chicken thigh with a knife, if the juices run clear – it’s cooked. Remove the chicken from its roasting tin and keep it aside to rest. If you wish to make the gravy as well – then, place the tin on the stove and heat gently and stir and scrape the bits from the pan. Stir in 1 tbsp of flour and cook for 2 minutes and add wine and simmer to reduce by half and then add stock. Simmer for 5-6 minutes and then season with salt and pepper and pass the gravy through sieve into a jug and keep it warm to serve with Chicken. Carrots 300 gm. Baby carrots, blanched al dente 1 tbsp. butter or olive oil 2 cloves garlic chopped ½ tsp. coriander seeds, crushed / pounded 1 tbsp. pine nuts 100 ml orange juice salt and pepper

Heat oil in a pan, sauté garlic, coriander seeds & pine nuts, sauté for 2 minutes, add carrots and sauté for further 2-3 minutes and then add orange juice and (zest, if possible). Season with salt and pepper. Bread Sauce 1 medium onion, peeled 5-6 cloves 1 bay leaf 8 peppercorns 500 ml full fat milk 100 gm fresh white breadcrumbs 1 tsp. curry powder 50 gm. Butter Salt Pepper For the bread sauce, stud the onion all over with the cloves, and then place into a saucepan along with the bay leaf, peppercorns and milk. Bring the mixture to the boil, remove the pan from the heat and set to cool for 15 minutes. Remove the onion, bay leaf and peppercorns, and then stir in the breadcrumbs & curry powder. Return the pan to the heat and cook very gently for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally until the breadcrumbs have absorbed all the liquid. Stir in the butter and season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. To serve, carve the chicken in slices and serve with bread sauce, gravy and carrots.

Mamma Mia

L

ast night I received an invitation to eat out at Mamma Mia Italian restaurant in Richmond. Wednesday nights are not usually a big social night for me, however I didn’t want to offend my friend so I happily accepted and went along. Mamma Mia is in the heart of Sheen and very easy to get to with parking in nearby side streets. The minute I saw the restaurant a little smile crept across my face and walking through the front door only brought my smile out and gave me such a happy feeling. The restaurant has an immediate impact. It is incredibly pretty, unfussy and offers a very warm welcome. A beautiful flower display in the centre and the fresh flowers on the tables, sparkling glasses and cutlery shimmer in the perfect ambient lighting all creating a classic and stylish environment that pulls you in and encourages you to relax at one of their inviting tables. We were greeted by the owner, Leo, whose gentle Italian hospitality and genuine love of his restaurant helps you feel comfortable as well as very special. Throughout the whole evening I really appreciated his mature and impeccable service. Only a true expert would have such perfect timing and authenticity. Once I’d settled into a glass of Valpolicella and Italian charm, the hardest part of the evening was deciding what to eat. While choosing we were treated to a plate of the most delicious bruschetta. I chose a daily special of mushrooms and garlic for antipasti and a delicious classic of pan fried calf’s liver cooked in butter and sage for my main dish. The fresh vegetables were a delicious selection of battered zucchini, sautéed potatoes and broccoli. My friend had a classic lasagne but to be honest I could have eaten anything off the menu. Everything was so exceedingly fresh and the smells and tastes were incredibly seductive. And then just when I thought it couldn’t get any better I had the most delicious cheesecake with a unique twist, which was both light and refreshing with a soft layer of panettone. As we were both working early the next morning it was all about the food, not the drink, but our small bottle of recommended wine complemented every taste perfectly. Leo is obviously very proud of his restaurant and I can see why. Mamma Mia opened in 1977 and has retained and nurtured its authenticity, regional Italian menus with fresh and good quality ingredients. Many celebrities have dined there over the years and their photos adorn the walls alongside pictures of the family. Even though we are certainly not celebrities we were made to feel special and part of the Mamma Mia family. From the 6th of November for four weeks the restaurant is celebrating its clientele and history by offering an authentic menu from 1977, Monday to Thursday, and will be charging 1977 prices for the pleasure. However, I don’t need an excuse to revisit Mamma Mia, I plan on becoming one of their regulars that have frequented the restaurant over the last 40 years for what I hope will be the next 40 years. Thank you Leo for a perfect evening!

The history of baubles

54 the riverside journals

By Claire-Marie McDonnell

C

hristmas decorations are suddenly serious business. There isn’t a garden centre worth its salt that hasn’t recently shelved the hanging basket in favour of hanging decorations. It’s less tinsel town and much more subtle sparkle. Decorating a tree is serious business, and business it certainly is, with some garden centres reporting that 60 per cent of their annual sales occur in November and December. Christmas tree decoration became fashionable in Queen Victoria’s reign, most notably in 1848 when a picture was published in the Illustrated London News of the royal family. In an elaborate image, Queen Victoria and her family were pictured at Windsor Castle standing beside a large tree adorned with glass ornaments hailing from Prince Albert’s native Germany. This is often described as ‘the birth’ of the bauble.

But why a bauble?.... Records suggest the original bauble comes from 16th century Germany in the alpine town of Lauscha, a town famed for its beautiful glass blowing. By the 1800s, founder of the first glassworks in Lauscha, Hans Greiner, began producing fruit- and nut-shaped glass ornaments complete with decorative silver embellishment using mercury or lead. With popularity and interest in the bauble growing, other glassworks in the area also began to produce their own style of glass decorations, creating moulds of animals, famous saints and children. Eventually, the beautiful glass ornaments, renowned as a German invention, were discovered by the infamous FW Woolworth on a visit to Germany. Sensing an opportunity within the rise of global commerce, he began to import the glass ornaments to the United States and the rest, they say...is history.

Peter Layton London Glassblowing Gallery gets into festive spirit I’m forever blowing baubles… This Christmas, London Glassblowing Gallery has put together a stunning collection of hand-blown baubles to commemorate owner Peter Layton’s 80th birthday. The Bermondsey Street gallery, one of Europe’s leading glassmaking workshops, will also host two public bauble-blowing sessions run by its resident artists to give visitors the chance to see the art up close. Peter has been at the forefront of the hot glass movement in Europe, establishing his unrivalled studio in 1976 and passing on his skills to a whole new generation of artists.

To purchase these baubles, or to view the full selection available, visit www.johnlewis.com & www.amara.com

Visit www.londonglassblowing.co.uk today or pop into the London Glassblowing workshop. For those keen on watching baubles being made, artists will be blowing from 10am-5pm on December 4th and 11th

ituated on the second floor of the building, the Panoramic Restaurant creates the perfect base for your day at the Races. We were met by the Restaurant Manager Mr Vish Alankar who confirmed that the restaurant seats 400 people at full capacity and has three-tiered seating along its whole length above the Grandstand, with magnificent views over the entire racecourse. We were seated at a table which would accommodate four people comfortably. All tables are equipped with a television to view the runners or winners for each race and attended by waitresses/waiters, and a tote to place your bets. This is a racegoer’s paradise offering the perfect experience with fine views of the complete track and you really do not have to leave the table, unless of course to attend the little boys’/girls’ room! As an avid racing fan visiting this restaurant was a delightful experience offering panoramic views of Kempton’s fine course, obviously how it got its name! The Panoramic menu boasts a full à la carte three-course dining experience and I carefully chose the grilled chicken caesar salad as my starter (£6.95) and my partner the thai fish cake (£6.95). For my main dish I had the garlic and rosemary marinated lamb rump served with fondant potato, carrot and cumin purée and sautéed curly kale (£18) while my partner opted for the beef burger sourced locally from Heanens Butchers of Roehampton with relish, tomato, gherkin, chunky chips and toasted bun (£15.50) – both good sized portions. On that cooler, rainy Thursday evening a dessert seemed a must and after some consideration I chose the rich chocolate fondant with chocolate sauce, clotted cream/ice cream (£5.95) and my partner the warm toffee and apple crumble with english custard (£5.95) complemented by an extensive wine list and a fine range of international beers including flemish strong golden pale ale, Duvel and a Timmermans Strawberry Beer known as Belgium’s finest lambic beer. On featured race days packages are available from £69 (per person) which includes admission, a race card and a twocourse meal. You can also experience the day with a private box overlooking the finishing straight seating up to 20-40 people. On a normal fixture, however, the restaurant is open for walk-ups and customers can then order from the a la carte menu I enjoyed. The view out to the course is absolutely stunning and ideal for racing fans who want to see the whole race whilst enjoying a lovely meal and refreshments. You can also walk to the other side of the restaurant which overlooks the parade ring to observe all the runners for each race – and you might be lucky enough to see one of the Queen’s horses.

Back to W basics:

ith the onset of autumn and temperatures continuing to drop, the icy winds and extra hours spent indoors can be tough on our skin. As our largest organ, skin is the first thing to show signs of distress when your body is not in harmony. From stress to sun damage, by changing your lifestyle and being smart about skincare, these top tips will help you achieve and maintain fantastic healthy skin into the festive season and beyond:

Get your skin ready for the festive season By Miss Sherina Balaratnam MBBS, MRCS, MSc(UCL) Surgeon and Medical Director, S-Thetics Clinic Beaconsfield

1. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen Sun damage is the main cause of premature skin ageing and skin cancer. UV damage replaces your skin’s natural glow with dryness, discoloration and, eventually, wrinkles. Use a minimum of SPF30 daily, reapplying regularly. SPF in make-up doesn’t give the protection you need. 2. Cosmeceutical skincare Cosmeceuticals tend to have higher concentrations of active ingredients vs high street products. These have been clinically tested to improve skin conditions such as acne, rosacea and pigmentation and are an ideal way to maintain the results of in-clinic medical grade treatments. 3. H2O Dehydration causes dry skin, fine lines and blemishes to appear. Drink small amounts of water regularly throughout the day. Consider your alcohol intake during the festive season. Alcohol dehydrates, and long-term overuse causes inflammation, which presents as facial redness and rosacea. 4. Remove your party make-up before bed But not with face wipes. This only moves make-up around your face, causing blocked pores. Choose a cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin’s natural oils, which damages the natural skin barrier and causes acne and irritation. 5. Tailor-make your skincare Your skincare should be as unique as you are, with ingredients tailored to your specific needs. Hydroxy acids containing salicylic acid suit oily or acne-prone skin to gently exfoliate and prevent blocked pores. For dry skin, hyaluronic acid, natures own plumper, draws water to hydrate and give a healthy glow. 6. Injectables The most skilled practitioners can sympathetically restore and rejuvenate your face in a subtle and balanced way. 8. Study and understand what’s going on underneath your skin Skin health takes more than just a one-dimensional approach. At S-Thetics, we carry out an advanced VISIA digital skin analysis on all patients to assess conditions such as UV damage, facial redness and skin texture. This gives a detailed measure of concerns on and beneath the skin surface and the ability to personalise treatments and skincare to our patients.

61 the riverside journals

We would like to invite all Riverside Journals readers for a complimentary VISIA skin analysis and £25 off your first HydraFacial treatment until 31st December 2017*

7. Give your skin a workout from the inside out Exercise increases blood flow and nutrients to the skin, flushing away toxins and cleansing skin from within. Our six-week cycle of producing new skin cells slows down as we age, and conditions such as acne and sun damage slow this down further. Include Retinols (a derivative of Vitamin A) in to your regime, which increase new cell formation and collagen production. Advanced medical facials will complement these to gently exfoliate and produce fresh, healthier skin.

Coach on the Couch

When heroes aren’t around Today, most people have access to around-the-clock news and the internet with information on heroic acts, but this isn’t the case everywhere. In remote areas of the world, particularly in war zones where vulnerable people are isolated by military actions, false heroes can easily step in. In Afghanistan, Pakistan and throughout the Middle East young people, isolated from outside news, often struggle to find heroes and it is understandable for them to believe the propaganda about the Western danger to their way of life. Leaders of terrorist organisations focus on local communities, creating a positive connection with the target group they want to recruit by providing food, water and support – developing their role as providers, supporters and consequently ‘heroes’. The need to have heroes is just as important for these young people as it is for young people anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, the terrorist groups that are filling that ‘hero’ role are expert at gaining their trust and admiration.

Mental health is in the headlines, everyone is talking about it, from the Royals, to the newsletters home from school… and so it should be, as more and more of us are suffering from mental health issues and it is estimated that is costs the UK economy around £105 billion every year! We are all anxious from time to time – indeed it is totally normal to have a little anxiety at stressful times. But when it spirals out of control, and starts to negatively affect our lives, then we need to deal with it. So, what can we do to change this? Whether it’s for friends, family, or even ourselves? Create a safe place… Anxiety is not rational, and sufferers are often worried, scared, or frightened so establishing an atmosphere of calm, and a place of safety, where they can feel comforted, reassured and supported is imperative. Talk about it… Anxiety has a way of making things look worse than they are, and so the old adage of a problem shared is a problem halved really does hold true. Acknowledge it… Anxiety usually has a root cause, so acknowledge, and accept, the underlying issue. Challenge it… Anxiety can make us lose both self-control and perspective. By playing devil’s advocate and asking the question, ‘How would it be if...?’, we help apply some pragmatism and common sense around issues that often focus on a worst-case scenario, and so encourage the sufferer to envisage much more positive outcomes. Develop calming strategies… Break the anxious state by taking some exercise or trying meditation – just a short walk or a few moments focusing on taking deep breaths, is often all that we need. Know that everything passes… Today’s newspapers are tomorrow’s fish and chip wrappers! What seems insurmountable one day, becomes achievable the next. We just have to look at life in different ways sometimes.

If you need more help, Coach on the Couch, Alex Bailey Staines, is available by appointment for private consultations and motivational meetings.

eroes are important to everyone. While some people may say they don’t have heroes, this is simply a case of semantics. They may call them people they admire or respect or people they use as role models. In the Western world, heroes may create life-changing products, or use their excessive wealth to help others. They may stand up for the rights of others or find ways to make a positive impact. This is not just a modern issue. Many legends and stories dating back to ancient civilizations focus on the role of the hero overcoming obstacles to accomplish seemingly impossible tasks to right the wrongs done to their community or their families.

Advice to The Gift Sufferers of of Life SAD by Leon Popplewell, Better Sports Psychologist

f you are feeling sluggish and withdrawn and would rather spend the winter months tucked up at home then you are not alone. Seasonal Affective Disorder and the drawing in of the days can lead to a naturally decreased mood and a sense of apathy. If this has put paid to all the good intentions created from the summer months then fear not as there are plenty of ways to keep you going through these naturally difficult months:

1. Eat smarter.

E

very year hundreds of couples across the region receive the heartbreaking news that they won’t be able to conceive without donor eggs. This may be because of surgery, cancer, genetic disease, premature menopause or a reduced number or quality of eggs. But amazing women from across the Thames Valley step in to donate their eggs. They do this to help people they know, or as part of their own IVF journey, sharing their eggs anonymously with someone, transforming the lives of people they’ve never met. During 2017, around 2000 children will be conceived in the UK with the help of an egg, sperm or embryo donor; other donations have been given to help further fertility research. If this season you are considering giving the ultimate gift of life, Professor Tim Child shares a few things you should know about egg donation:

Certain foods high in Vitamin D, like some fish, can help to enhance your mood and relieve anxiety.

2. Exercise. Try different forms of exercise to overcome the winter blues – perhaps ones that don’t feel like hard work – such as ice skating or walking in the woods.

3. Music. Exercise with music; which has been shown to improve mood in both the short and long term.

Better.org

Who can donate? Women between 18 and 35 years inclusive; nonsmokers with a BMI below 30. Can I be anonymous? No. People conceived from donations after April 2005 can request your contact details when they turn 18. Do I have any legal responsibilities? No. Donors hold no legal rights or responsibilities to the children born. Donors aren’t required to pay anything towards care.

It takes a few weeks of time, but can mean a whole new future for people who need donor eggs, and can’t have children without help. Festive Sparkle

T

his weekend I went shopping. I was looking for my best Christmas going out outfit for this year, I wasn’t expecting to buy it I just wanted to have a look and get an idea of what I would like. You know how important this outfit is, it’s the go to dress of the season. The dress I can get out and wear anywhere, parties, theatre trips, special meals out. I usually go for a cocktail dress, usually black and usually plain, I love that classic simplicity of understated style. In fact, I have a wardrobe full of little black dresses, each very different and yet I always enjoy searching for the next perfect dress. But rather than just looking I did come home with my best Christmas going out outfit, wrapped beautifully in tissue paper slipped into the side pocket of my handbag. I’m not quite sure how it happened but I didn’t buy my usual little black number of a dress at all. I have in fact brought a very colourful necklace! I have fallen in love with a piece of jewellery, something about its shimmering beauty totally seduced me into spending all my Christmas dress money on this fabulous necklace. I am now the proud owner of a strikingly exquisite D’Orlan 1970s vintage necklace. The necklace is designed with geometric flat links in gold and each link features an array of small Swarovski crystals in richly luxurious jewel hues. The green, purple, blue and red crystals shimmer brilliantly next to the simple pearls, embedded in the classic gold. The necklace may have cost more than any of my Christmas dresses but it’s more than one outfit. As soon as I got home I tried it on with nearly all my wardrobe and it looks stunning. With a plain black dress, the colours are magnified as they shine out of the simple background and add all the classic chic style that my Christmas outfit needs to celebrate the festive season. This year I’m not only looking forward to wearing my best Christmas going out outfit to parties, the theatre and special dinners but also with a crisp white shirt and jeans on boxing day or a classic red cashmere jumper over the new year. So, go on try it – invest in a stunning statement piece of jewellery this year and you’ll sparkle throughout the whole festive season.

lobally renowned as the “King of Pearls”, Kokichi Mikimoto persevered through a series of rigorous trials and hardships before he successfully invented the method for culturing pearls – a method so unique it even amazed the legendary inventor, Thomas Edison. In 1893 Kokichi Mikimoto pledged to protect and raise stocks of Akoya pearl oysters, depleted at the time by over fishing, and to grow pearls with these oysters. Years were spent in what were trial-and-error experiments that were viewed with intense public scepticism but eventually Mikimoto overcame the odds and succeeded in culturing pearls. This was a defining moment and marked the first time that pearls had been produced from an oyster through human intervention. It took Kokichi Mikimoto over a decade more of hard work to succeed in producing a perfectly spherical pearl, this lead to him becoming known throughout the world as the inventor of cultured pearls. In 1927 Kokichi had the opportunity to visit Thomas Edison at his home in New York. Admiring the Mikimoto pearl that Kokichi presented to him, Edison declared, “This isn’t a cultured pearl, it’s a real pearl. There are two things which can’t be made at my laboratory—diamonds and pearls. It is one of the wonders of the world that you were able to culture pearls, it is something which is supposed to be biologically impossible.” Kokichi’s development of cultured pearls brought Japanese jewellery to the attention of the world and as an intrepid pioneer who was resolute in his pursuit of beauty; he devoted his entire life to pearls. Their latest exquisite collection of pearl jewellery has been inspired by unique treasured pieces from the Mikimoto archives. The Regalia collection celebrates the brand’s privilege of designing and customising jewellery for esteemed women of nobility throughout history. For this collection, Mikimoto’s most skilled designers and artisans spent two years exploring the brand’s substantial archives to craft unique and new pieces of symbolic significance. The collection includes South Sea cultured pearls and diamonds set in 18 carat white gold to complement the intricately designed ornate detailing. Each of the 13 Regalia pieces has been expertly reinterpreted for the modern, sophisticated woman and represent the enduring grace and beauty that makes Mikimoto the internationally recognised leader and producer of the finest quality cultured pearl jewellery.

Classic Collection Holidays (0800 047 1064; www.classic-collection.co.uk) offers

fter a vigorous day out, be it hiking or skiing, there’s no better sensation than indulging in the luxury of a Swiss chalet. Yes, there are fondues and Jacuzzis but it was the exceptional service that made me feel truly spoilt and utterly pampered. I was to stay at Chalet Les Anges, courtesy of Sylvia Delvaille Jones of Villas and Apartments Abroad (www.vaanyc.com). Both a traditional chalet and a highly luxuriant one. Built in 2009, it’s a very classy residence on three floors with nine bedrooms. It’s open plan and spacious with a grand piano in the corner and it has an indooroutdoor feel. I pulled back the curtains to see the Matterhorn towering over the town and below in the valley all the clustered charm of the Alpine chalets. Somewhere from out of the kitchen comes the magic. First in printed form with typed out menus. Then in different table layouts. And finally, with the food itself. Greg, the Michelin 3 Star trained chef, on the first night presented seared scallops with roasted butternut squash, pan-fried sea bass with fennel purée, quinoa, chargrilled asparagus and white wine cream sauce followed by rhubarb semifreddo with pistachio cream. Scrumptious. For all you gourmets read on for the next night I was to enjoy spring pea and truffle soup, homemade beetroot gravadlax with smoked salmon and chives crème fraiche, lightly poached fillet of cod with potato croquettes and butter cream sauce, followed by vanilla panna cotta with caramelised pineapple and then a strawberry cappuccino. ‘Back at the ranch’ and nearby is Chalet Grace. From outside it appears to be a traditional chalet but from within it has a personal stamp with homely artifacts from around the world and big windows looking out over the Matterhorn and a front garden with shrubs and wood chips. There’s also Chalet Maurice by Magali de Tscharner the same interior designer as Chalet Les Anges. It’s perfect for celebrities as it offers total discretion with its own funicular entrance and real proximity to the heliport. All very James Bond. At Nendaz I stayed at the Chalet Etoile. It’s part of the Hideaways Club (www.thehideawaysclub. com), membership to which allows access to a portfolio of properties all over the world. It’s perfect for someone who doesn’t want to be restricted to one location or have the hassle of maintenance. As tennis player Tim Henman says, “With the club I have a wide variety of beautiful properties in stunning locations that I can use year-round, plus the potential growth of my investment.” For a true dining out treat I highly recommend the passionate creations of chef Loris Lathion and sommelier Romain Arnaud at Le Mont-Rouge (https://mont-rouge.ch/fr). They offered the delicious amuse bouche of buratta cheese and poached white peaches with fresh mint and olive oil. For my main course I had Irish bio salmon and Sérac rillettes and chilled gin-tomato soup. And I followed it with Mara des Bois strawberries, grappa scented sabayon and dark chocolate ice cream. Romain was characterful and knowledgeable and went out of his way to introduce me to his beautiful wines. I drank the rather modernist labels of Lisss and MT. For more honest fayre I recommend Restaurant Les Etagnes (www.lesetagnes.com/en). My final resting spot was at Interlaken’s foremost hotel the Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel and Spa (www.victoria-jungfrau.ch/en) which has a wide range of international guests who keep coming back. It’s situated on Höheweg, the main street catering for tourists, and opposite the hotel there’s an open expanse used for parades and festivals and a landing spot for paragliders. I just missed the “Strong Man” contest but luckily managed to tune in to the renditions of the 8-foot-long Alpenhorns blown by locals in traditional dress who released a long deep boom that connected the Alps in a sublime way for me with the stunning musicality of Beethoven, Mahler and Wagner. And all beneath the impressive snow-clad Jungfrau mountain itself. And the hotel’s state-of-the-art Nescens Spa is the perfect way to finish a day up the mountains. There’s a beautiful outdoor swimming pool and adjacent plunge pools. All my needs were met in comfort and luxury as I had almond and jojoba oil kneaded into me by my highly professional masseur. For dining Quaranta Uno had an excellent and comprehensive Italian menu while La Terrasse has a confidently small menu and was truly one of the best dinners I have experienced. I was all set for complete elegant dining in this grand room decorated with a marble floor, palm trees and chandeliers. ‘Küchenchef’ Stefan Beer presented a summer shake salad and separately MSC Eden prawns, olives and sundried tomatoes. To follow was a delicious regional beef tenderloin to go with a lovely Neuchatel Vernissage Grillette Domaine de Cressier red wine. And then came “Victoria’s dark secret” of strawberries and chocolate and a selection of cheese from Jumi de Berne. I am going to name them because they were that good. The soft cheeses were the schlossberger alt, la bouse and abe rot with the harder ones being sommerhimu and bock block senior. The perfect dinner consisting of small servings of light food and yet all thoroughly thought through. Utter magic!

ant a short break, not too far from the UK? Look no further than Menorca, one of the smaller Balearic Islands which is only a two-hour flight away. It is quick to reach and you can discover its beauty – and richly varied 1,000 year history – with ease as it’s only 30 miles by 10 miles in size making it an ideal weekend away. However long you choose, staying at the luxury laden and adults-only Barcelo Hamilton hotel is obligatory. It is just a 10-minute drive from the airport in an incredible location at the mouth of the island’s natural harbour – the second largest in the world. With two pools on the ground floor and six jacuzzis on the roof terrace the only problem you will have is choosing where to sunbathe. Even picking your tipple is easy, go for the deliciously refreshing Menorcan speciality of pomada, a blend of local gin and lemonade. There’s a sauna and hammam (steam bath) and double treatment rooms for couples as well as a fitness centre. The Sa Cuina restaurant within the hotel offers buffet-style breakfasts, lunches and dinners but I particularly loved the more intimate, waterside Sa Cova restaurant with its à la carte menu of seafood and local cuisine washed down with some fine wines. Try the chef’s lobster stew, Andalusian style calamari with wasabi aioli and the suckling pig. A typical meal with wine costs around 40 Euros (£35) per person. Following dinner head up to the Sky Bar or the Es Mirador Lobby Bar for a cocktail and to enjoy some live music, or stay where you are and wait for the DJ to arrive. But those keen for adventure can head into Mahon itself. You can drive of course, but a private water taxi from Cales Fonts, a short walk away, is a treat. It will drop you off harbour-side near the town centre. Then a climb up steps to the Placa del Carme is a great place to start. You can take a guided walking tour or explore independently. Look out for the glorious markets, rich in local culture and delicious fresh food – most notably cheese, an island speciality. Discovering Menorca’s unusual history, such as Roman, Moorish, even English influences, at the Museum de Menorca, housed in a former 17th century monastery. Or pick a beach from the 46 around the coast, visit the Binifadet Winery, watch the sunset from the Cova d’en Xoroi (cave), shop for designer shoes at Jaime Mascaro. One visit will not be enough.

Get Your Skates On

By Claire Quirk

81 the riverside journals

G

et your skates on is such a common expression but I wonder how many of today’s children have ever really put on a pair of skates and, of course, I mean ice skates. Growing up on the outskirts of London we made frequent visits to Richmond and Queens ice skating rinks and had so much innocent fun practising our moves and building up speed trying to impress our friends and observers. But then, of course, ice skating was an Olympic sport and British competitors led the field. I’m talking about John Curry in 1976 and Robin Cousins in 1980 both winning Gold at the Olympics figure skating and then Torvill and Dean’s famous Bolero dance routine in 1984, the only dance to ever score an unanimous maximum points. Maybe this success was down to figure skating being the first winter sport to be included in the Olympics in the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. Ice skating was cool and fun and accessible but then, as with all things, fashion changed. Sadly I became too cool for ice skating just as the British ice skaters started to hand over the gold medals to other countries and Richmond ice skating rink closed its doors in 1987 leaving Queens to pick up the pieces. Over the years ice skating has had its ups and downs but it is now more popular than ever with numerous ice rinks opening up all over London throughout the winter period. Ice skating is a time-honoured tradition that has enticed Londoners for decades to wrap up warm and take to the ice. The most popular 19th century skating took place in Hyde Park, however a tragic accident in 1867 meant skaters sought safer alternatives, one of which was the opening of the first artificial rink which opened in Chelsea in 1876 which really gave birth to skating as we know it today. Between the two wars, the number of indoor and man-made rinks grew rapidly, including pop-up rinks such as the rink installed on the top of Selfridges in 1924. Richmond opened its doors in 1928 and was quickly followed by Queens in 1930. Although most rinks have now closed, Queens is still open and is the only ice rink in central London to be open daily throughout the year. Nowadays ice skating is predominantly a festive activity with rinks opening up at London’s magnificent historical sites. In recent years Somerset House has dominated but there are lots of other skating facilities including the Tower of London, Natural History Museum as well as Hyde Park’s magical Winter Wonderland. Maybe we haven’t moved forward at all but rather gone back to outside skating as it used to be. Skating in London this winter has become a fabulous festive seasonal must so let’s embrace the true meaning of ‘get your skates on’ and have some thoroughly modern fun on the ice.

We were shown to our suite and it appeared that all the residential buildings and accommodation were staggered gracefully, set behind winding paths and almost hidden amongst trees and attractive plants. Our accommodation consisted of very comfortable connecting rooms with a lovely balcony and one with a larger terrace, privately secluded with plants and trees but still with a delightful view through the forage onto one of the six swimming pools and a bar. The surroundings of the hotel are truly beautiful and offer a sense of tranquillity and wellbeing second to none. After we had settled in and unpacked it was time to explore the grounds and facilities. First a heated swimming pool connecting to a bar offering lunchtime/daytime refreshments and lunch, with the perfect outlook onto the relaxing deep blue waters of the Asian pools. Four of the swimming pools are heated to 30deg from October through to May – the Zen Pool, Faces of Angkor Pool (for adults only), Pool of Flowers (for use of site guests only) and the Thai Spa Pool (for use by spa guests only). The remaining two pools are the Langkawi and the Thai Club pool, (which is reserved for Suite customers only). The gardens of the 5-star resort are designed to create a tranquil Asian environment within a Mediterranean climate. There are in excess of 200 different species of plants and trees with over 80 percent of these being of Asian descent and over 150,000 shrubs that have been planted displaying and providing an array of colour throughout the year.

Hotel & Thai Spa There are seven themed restaurants within the Asia Gardens complex. Cuisines from all corners of the world are represented, so take a culinary trip round India, Asia, The Americas and Europe. You will be spoilt for choice. For fine dining why not try the In Black Restaurant which is open every evening, but be aware that only children over the age of 12 will be served there. Situated by the children’s heated pool is The Zen Snack Bar which caters for all ages and tastes. Overlooking the other swimming pools is The Palapa Mediterranean restaurant, ideal for a leisurely lunch, or during the summer season enjoy a barbecue at The Island. If you have a healthy appetite, then look no further than The Udaipur. For 48 euros you can eat as much as you like from the extensive buffet. Since each evening has a different theme you will never get bored, and with unlimited wine included in the price, what’s not to like? On our visit to The Udaipur we were treated to a Mexican themed evening. As you would expect, nachos and fajitas were on offer, but what you don’t expect is the sheer variety of the dishes and the trimmings and the style in which they are presented. The nachos, served in small wok-like bowls, were delicious and if you’re into seafood, do try the wonderful king prawns. With a vast array of starters, mains, puddings and cheese on offer, there is something for everyone to enjoy in this delightful restaurant. If you need to unwind after your meal, why not try the Champagne Bar, or relax in one of the comfy chairs at The Bonsai Bar overlooking the beautiful gardens, where on certain nights musicians will provide soothing background music. A perfect end to a perfect day. The spa area attached to the Asia Thai Gardens Hotel boasts its own pool indoor, and outdoor, to relax in pre- or post-treatment. The steam room is situated to the left of the indoor pool giving you the opportunity to open your pores and let the detox begin. The atmosphere at the spa is very relaxing and the different types of massage on offer have something to suit everyone’s needs. Green tea is served in traditional pots on arrival at the pool/spa area and all suitable clothing is supplied with changing facilities and lockers. The massage we opted for was a traditional Thai massage. We shared a room however private rooms are available. It started with the traditional foot wash and when we were finished an hour later we felt about ten-foot-tall. We had been stretched in all areas and aches and pains just disappeared. The spa holds indoor and outdoor classes every day and you can pick and choose from meditation, yoga, pilates to tai chi, estiramientos and everything in-between. A list of what’s available for the next day is delivered to your room with the turndown service; there’s no need to book you just turn up. The complex has an air-conditioned fully equipped gym for those feeling that they would like a work-out rather than just a relaxing break. Another lovely feature is every afternoon at 5pm in the Champagne Bar you can enjoy a complimentary tea of your choice. To summarise, the Asia Gardens 5-star Hotel offers the most tranquil and relaxing well-being luxury break and truly is an experience not to be missed.

liveden was the glittering hub of society; visited by virtually every British monarch since George I and home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor in the early 20th century. Cliveden hosted exclusive parties and political gatherings and in the 1960s became infamously associated with the Profumo Affair. Today you can discover a variety of formal gardens that delight throughout the seasons, with new planting schemes every spring/summer. The famous six-acre Parterre showcases impressive floral displays whilst in The Long Garden there are thousands of bedding plants surrounded by distinctive topiary. Dotted across the estate you’ll find an outstanding sculpture collection, which you can learn more about by picking up Statue Trail from the Information Centre. Over in the woodlands there are miles of picturesque paths with panoramic views stretching across the Thames, perfect for riverside rambling. Pick up a Dog Walkers’ Guide to follow suggested woodland routes, as recommended from regular dog walkers to the site. Families with younger children can head over to Cliveden’s giant maze, which covers over a third of an acre and stands with hedges over two metres tall. There’s also The Storybook Play Den, an exciting corner for little ones to let their imaginations run wild. Whether you love formal gardens, long country walks or are just looking for a special place to explore, there’s lots to see and do at National Trust’s Cliveden.

The Raymond Blanc Gardening School

uly 2017 heralded the launch of The Raymond Blanc Gardening School – the first of its kind dedicated to horticulture within a hotel property in the UK. Inspired by a deep joy and curiosity for the wonders of nature, this school combines the passion the whole team shares for the love of gardening with the desire to pass on best kept secrets to guests. Raymond Blanc has always said that the gardens at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons are as much a part of the excellence as the two-Michelin-starred food and the school is the perfect opportunity to enjoy learning more about the mystery of horticulture within a truly convivial environment. Quite simply, it is a perfect marriage of true minds – where nature and culture co-exist.

An elegant garden in Eton

A

large and very exposed roof terrace with enviable river views from the rear and side of the property, this space was originally a blank canvas with very little out there other than the decking and an existing electric barbeque. The client’s brief for the design was to create a colourful and contemporary space for relaxation and entertaining incorporating separate lounge and dining areas, as well as more private ‘breakfast areas’ overlooking the river. An existing boundary fence was softened and minimised with the use of Olive trees and Lavender placed in planters against it whilst the existing barbecue was built into an fully bespoke outdoor kitchen unit. The granite topped kitchen area features multiple cupboards for storage, a Blastcool fridge, a and a decorative log store on the reverse. Four Roshults outdoor stools sit at the far end of the kitchen unit creating an additional seating area for drinks or nibbles. A ceramic topped extendable Fischer Mobel dining table designed to seat twelve sits in the middle ‘dining section’ section of the terrace shaded by a fully automated blue retractable awning for the fierce summer afternoons. Overlooking the river in the ‘lounge’ area sit two large L shaped Dedon Carbon Slimline sofas accessorised with bright blue and orange outdoor cushions. Two matching Dedon side tables and a large coffee table complete the set whilst bespoke powder coated planters enclose the area in a sea of lavender creating a sense of privacy from passers by below. On the other side of the terrace, overlooking the river, nestle two secluded ‘breakfast areas’. Although both spots provide seating for two people, the space at the far end also encapsulates a large teak storage console and a bespoke powder coated orange metal cube to house the client’s Big Green Egg barbecue for a more intimate cooking and dining experience. Finally, the white walls of the property were wired and planted with climbing Trachelospermum jasminoides for scent and greenery whilst Buxus sempervirens is used in stone coloured planters to provide year round structure to the scheme. Lavender is used throughout the terrace and adds a vibrant burst of colour and scent whilst keeping the bees in business. At dusk, LED Uplighters highlight key plants adding drama whilst canister lights mounted to the exterior of the doorways provides functional lighting for entertaining and security purposes.

Hazlemere Windows assist on DIY SOS Big Build Project

93 the riverside journals

O

ne day five years ago Midwife Sascha Koutrouza came home to her home in Welwyn Garden City with a throat infection that sadly changed everything in her life forever. Doctors believe the throat infection caused her immune system to over-respond, leaving her with permanent kidney disease requiring hospital dialysis at least four days a week. The main hope was home dialysis – but this hope was dashed when she was told there wasn’t the space at home for this to happen. Mr Andrew Koutrouza and the extended family simply could not afford the extension, which is when DIY SOS got involved: a single-storey extension would create the space needed for the NHS to provide an ‘athome’ (specific to Sascha’s type of kidney treatment) dialysis system. The BBC put out an appeal on Facebook for tradesmen and materials, and given Hazlemere Windows have a showroom in Welwyn Garden City, they decided they would supply and fit all the new and replacement windows and doors needed on the project. So last summer four of Hazlemere’s most experienced craftsmen installed new windows and doors. The Hazlemere team consisted of Senior Installer John Layton, Installation Manager Alan Layton, Operations Director Jason Bradshaw and Fitter Michal Kowalczyk. These guys worked alongside DIY SOS presenter Nick Knowles, along with series regulars Mark Miller, Chris Frediani, Julian Perryman and Billy Byrne from 23rd August 2016 to 1st September 2016. Thanks to the generosity of aluminium and PVCu window and door manufacturers, Conservatory Outlet of Wakefield in Yorkshire, and double glazed sealed unit manufacturers Nicholls and Clarke of Fareham in Hampshire, Hazlemere Window Company were able to procure the glass, window and door frames from these suppliers at cost, which meant they were able to donate all the products and their labour free of charge to the Welwyn Garden City family in need, being helped out by DIY SOS to give them a brighter future. Consequently, Hazlemere sincerely thank both the Conservatory Outlet and Nicholls and Clarke for playing no small part in enabling the lives of this needy family to be transformed. As part of the transformation project, Hazlemere Windows were asked to survey, supply and install white A+ energy rated PVCu double glazed windows throughout the house and also in the new extension that was built by the DIY SOS team and all the other tradesmen, and suppliers who had also given their time and resources to the cause. In addition Hazlemere supplied and fitted a double glazed aluminium bi-folding door to the extension built by the DIY SOS team, enabling Sascha’s family to open up her new living space, as and when the weather allows! The DIY SOS programme, showing how this Hertfordshire home in the Knightsfield area of Wewlyn Garden City was totally transformed, was first broadcast live by the BBC 1 at 9pm on Thursday 15th June 2017. To view the same UPVC window products supplied and fitted by Hazlemere during this programme, visit one of their home improvement showrooms. The Hertfordshire Showroom is located at Unit 10 Mundells Industrial Estate, Little Mundells, Welwyn Garden City, Herts, AL7 1EW. It is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturdays 10am to 4pm (closed Sundays). The Buckinghamshire showroom is located in Wellington Road, Cressex Business Park, High Wycombe, Bucks, HP12 3PR. It is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturdays 10am to 4pm and Sundays 10am to 1pm. For directions call 01628 879244 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk

On his journey he teams up with Ruth, a loveable sheep who has lost her flock and Dave, a dove with lofty aspirations. Along with three wise cracking camels, and some eccentric stable animals, Bo and his new friends, follow the Star and become the unlikely heroes in the greatest story ever told – the first Christmas. 24th November

Battle Of The Sexes Directors Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton / Writer Simon Beaufoy

In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men’s-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the BATTLE OF THE SEXES and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. The fiercely private King was not only championing for equality, but also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, as her friendship with Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough) developed. And Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons, at the expense of his family and wife Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking discussions in bedrooms and boardrooms that continue to reverberate today.

Suburbicon ‘Suburbicon’ is a peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns… the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) must navigate the town’s dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence. 1st December

Wonder Director Stephen Chbosky / Writers Steve Conrad, Stephen Chbosky Based on the New York Times bestseller, ‘Wonder’ tells the story of August Pullman (Jacob Tremblay). Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family (Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson), his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to discover their compassion and acceptance, Auggie’s extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out. 1st December

The Man Who Invented Christmas Director Bharat Nalluri / Writers Susan Coyne, Les Standiford

This tells the true story of how Charles Dickens came to write the seminal yuletide novel A Christmas Carol in only six weeks. Set in 1840s London, Dickens (Dan Stevens) had been struggling to come up with fresh ideas after the failure of his last three works. However, when he’s inspired by the vision of a story that would fire the hearts

of humanity, he set out to write and self-publish a book that would reignite his career. As the likes of Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer) and The Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future start coming to life in his head, Dickens began creating a masterpiece that gave birth to the Christmas we know and love today. 8th December

Stronger Director David Gordon Green / Writers John Pollono, Jeff Bauman.

While waiting for her at the finish line when the blast occurred, he lost both his legs in the attack. After regaining consciousness in the hospital he tackles months of physical and emotional rehabilitation with the unwavering support of Erin and his family. It is Jeff’s deeply personal account of the heroic journey that tests a family’s bond, defines a community’s pride and inspires his inner courage to overcome devastating adversity and become the living embodiment of “Boston Strong”. 16th December

Director Ridley Scott / Writers David Scarpa, John Pearson

Rome, 1973. Masked men kidnap a teenage boy named Paul (Charlie Plummer). His grandfather, J Paul Getty, is the richest man in the world, a billionaire oil magnate, but he’s notoriously miserly. His favourite grandson’s abduction is not reason enough for him to part with any of his fortune. ‘All the Money in the World’ follows Gail (Michelle Williams), Paul’s devoted, strong-willed mother who, unlike Getty, has consistently chosen her children over his fortune. Her son’s life in the balance with time running out, she attempts to sway Getty even as her son’s mob captors become increasingly more determined, volatile and brutal. When Getty sends his enigmatic security man Fletcher Chace (Mark Wahlberg) to look after his interests, he and Gail become unlikely allies in this race against time that ultimately reveals the true and lasting value of love over money.

Education, Dyslexia, Art By Artist/Printmaker Jeannelise Edelsten

I

t’s funny how teachers can make a mark on you, for the better but not always: hear me out. At 15, living in rural French Burgundy, I was told on a parents evening that I was stupid and I would never amount to much. To that teacher I was those things: my writing was appalling, I couldn’t spell and I had great difficulties in dictation tests (a real classic in French schools back then!). The fact is I am dyslexic, but in those days, I was just ‘intellectually challenged’. Saying that, not knowing I had ‘difficulties’ helped me make the best decision of my life: there and then I decided to leave France after my Baccalaureat (age 18) and go abroad. As I loved English, learnt from my older brother’s Beatles, Genesis and Supertramp albums, I arrived in England in 1987 with £20 in my pocket and worked as an au pair. I learnt English watching old black and white films with the dictionary in one hand and a notepad in the other. Forward 30 years and I am nicely settled in the heart of the Chilterns, with a lovely family and a First-Class Honours Degree in Fine Art. A year ago I left a salaried job in a local school where I was Artist-in-Residence to work in my own studio at home and have carried on perfecting my own printing technique of drypoint with gilding. I use a fine metal pen and scratch into sheets of plastic or metal to leave a pattern that I then cover with printing inks and transfer onto watercolour paper. I then adorn the print with beautiful gold, copper or silver leaves. My artwork is not a constant narrative and can sometimes be thematic; I have taken part in group shows illustrating Graham Greene books and am currently working on artwork inspired by Agatha Christie’s novels. To quote artist Stephen Chambers, ‘printing is a mix of Chance, Recklessness and the Unexpected’, that is why I am drawn to it. Nowadays dyslexia is no longer an issue because I know I am extremely good at what I do. A while ago I was asked to take part in the new ‘Buckinghamshire Craft Guild’ and I accepted. We are a group set up to promote the best in designers and applied contemporary crafts in Buckinghamshire, providing an all-year-round showcase and the opportunity to meet the makers, see demonstrations and learn about the process and artistic creative journey by way of a shop. The Guild has a permanent shop at Layby Farm in Stoke Mandeville (home to Obsidian Art, Fabric HQ, Freya Jones Spinning & Fibrecraft and By Hand Books). All work is for sale (ceramics, glass, prints etc) and commissions can be arranged directly with the makers. There are two special Christmas Shopping events, Wednesday 6th December from 6pm-9pm and Sunday 10th from 12noon-4pm. (Sign up online at www.buckinghamshirecraftguild.co.uk for exclusive discounts and offers or follow the guild on Facebook or Instagram).

Manou Marzban Bespoke commissioned pieces for collectors

Both halves of the table can be displayed on the wall as a pair stretching to an impressive 2.5m in length. Collectors may also opt to acquire one half of a table, which measures 1.25m wide and 1.5m high. There are a limited number of options for collectors to work with the artist to create bespoke commissioned tables.

‘Ping Pop’

or Iranian-American artist, Manou Marzban, the timing of his recent November exhibition in London could not have been better. Middle Eastern contemporary art has been on every collector’s radar since Christie’s held its first auction of art from the region in Dubai in 2006. Just over a decade later, for the first time ever, all three major auction houses (Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Bonhams) decided to hold sales of contemporary Middle Eastern art right here in London. Sotheby’s website makes special mention of the Iranian art market noting its ‘stratospheric growth’ over the past decade. As a rising star among artists of Iranian origin, Manou says, “I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve been exhibiting across Europe for nearly a decade, and for the longest time, Middle Eastern art was considered a niche market. But that’s all changing now. It’s our time.” Manou’s opening event was over-subscribed. His spectacular series ‘Ping Pop’ was a smash hit, and for the first time he was taking advance reservations for his 2018 collection. Collectors looking for their next investment have little time to lose. In ‘Ping Pop’ Manou masterfully graffities actual table tennis tables with his unique blend of Pop and Street Art to make large-scale statement pieces that make for entertaining conversation pieces. The artist states, “I like to create art that entertains and engages people. The graffitied ping pong tables are great for that. There’s a whole world in there – the miniature caricatures, the sometimes absurd graffiti-style scribblings, the unexpected or surprising collaged bits and pieces.” Both the artwork and the artist himself have a uniquely engaging quality, beautifully expressed by the commentator who recently interviewed Manou for America’s PBS, introducing Manou as ‘a character so large, so generous, and so vibrant that people find themselves happy in his company’. Most collectors display the table tops on the wall, hanging the two halves together making a striking statement 2.5m wide. Collectors with a smaller wall space may buy only one half of a table, nonetheless striking at an impressive 1.25m high and 1.5m wide. For exhibitions, Manou tends to leave the tables intact for a bit of fun, and every once in a while a collector will follow his cue. Manou recounts, “I once visited the home of one of my collectors to find that he had left the table set up as a ping pong table. It was basically a permanent art installation in his rec room. I loved it.” The artist’s breakthrough came in 2013 when invited to exhibit at the Nicolas Flamel Gallery in Paris alongside the hottest emerging talent from Iran as well as the country’s established 20th century artists. Manou’s collection sold out, with Le Monde dubbing him ‘The Banksy of Persia’. The artist credits his unique approach to Street Art to his years growing up the son of an Iranian diplomat in the years leading up to the Iranian Revolution of 1979.

Homework Harmony

110 the riverside journals

By Claire Quirk

2. Planning is crucial. Plan some time before the start of the holidays to go through revision plans and create a work schedule that enables your child to join in with the family. 3. Flexibility is important so that unexpected invitations can be accepted without adding stresses to the revision timetable. 4. Communicate with your child, before the start of the holidays, and be sure you understand the expectations of their holiday homework. Be clear what the school expects, what you expect and what your child expects. 5. Compromise. You may have to compromise on your expectations as long as the school will be satisfied with your child’s efforts. 6. Timing could avoid tantrums. Completing as much homework as possible at the start of the holiday means there’ll be less stress in the busiest part of the festivities. Being busy then will also make the days go quicker in the lead up to Christmas day! 7. Work, rest and play. Set homework time and balance this with some fun time so the children know they have something to look forward to every day. 8. Work together. Try to avoid one child having to spend time on homework while the rest of the family are having fun together. If possible, plan for all your children to be doing homework at the same time and perhaps while you are doing chores around the house too. 9. Help each other. As a family you could all try and work on some homework together. Christmas is one of the only times of the year when a whole family can be in the house together, including grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins. Draw on family expertise to help each other out, sharing knowledge and experience. 10. Have fun. Look for opportunities to make homework more interesting. During the holiday period try and visit museums, the theatre or great outdoors and make learning real and practical. A visit to the seaside, for example, could answer a whole section of physical geography, the theatre and films could bring Shakespeare to life.

But what about the little ones? How do you keep your primary aged children from forgetting their newly acquired skills, timetables and ability to write! Christmas couldn’t be a better time for learning at home and still having fun. So while you’re busy with all those Christmas preparations here’s how you can include your child and help them learn. Shopping – this might not seem so obvious but you can make it fun and educational. Write a list and play ‘guess the prices’ beforehand and then score points for being the closest. Work out how much you’re spending as you go around the shop. Talk about the packaging, shapes and weight and colours. Read the labels and try and work out where foods and different products come from. This all might take more time but it would make it more fun. Cooking – most children love baking. There are so many different things to make like gingerbread people and houses, cakes and different biscuits. There is all the weighing and measuring to do and then telling the time. And, of course, finally there is all the eating! Decorating – homemade decorations are so unique and heart warming. OK so they might not look like a magazine’s designer Christmas but they will fill your home with fun and originality. Cotton wool santas, pompoms, streamers and painted cones are easy to make. Christmas cards – recycling and being creative with old Christmas cards can create some really interesting alternatives. They can also be turned into decorations and gift tags and your child will love your appreciation of their creativity Writing letters – letters to Father Christmas, thank you letters and shopping lists are all ways to encourage your child to keep writing throughout the holidays without realising that they are practising their literacy skills. Watch films and telly – talking about stories, predicting, sequencing and retelling events all help your child develop their conversational skills. Watching family favourites together helps build empathy and creates those bonds and memories that are so special to families. The Christmas holidays are often the busiest holidays of the year with so much to do and enjoy in the two weeks off school and work. Relationships and memories are created and strengthened during this special time of the year and that is the most important part of Christmas so whatever happens with holiday homework, with a little thought and imagination don’t let it spoil the festivities for you and all your big and little children.

t’s that wonderful time of the year again and everything is gearing up for Christmas and as usual there seems to be so much to do and so little time. December can be incredibly busy as you try and get so much done before the start of the school holidays. And then almost as soon as they start and your home is full of your little one’s excitement or your teenager’s cleverly disguised anticipation you still have all the final preparations, decorating, cooking and shopping that needs to be done before the big day. Then, of course, there are all the family and friends’ visits, parties, the sales, special TV programs, pantomimes and New Year’s Eve to fit into your seasonal schedule before it’s back to school to hand in the homework. Oh homework! And this is where it gets scary – when and how do you get your little ones and teenagers to complete their Christmas homework or think of anything academic during the festive season? So, as you count down the days until Christmas, here is my countdown for successful teenage homework during the Christmas holidays.

1. A levels are easy. Any 6th former who is ambitious for success is going to work throughout the holidays. They’ll be organised, have a revision plan and be enjoying their subjects and learning. The hardest job you’ll have with managing their homework is making sure they fit in some time for fun and the family.

Old Acquaintances

T

here are few celebrations which can be said to unite so many different cultures, religions and nations as New Year’s Eve. Whether you’re sending out the old or wishing in the new, this special evening has roots steeped in history and tradition. New Year’s Eve is held on the last day of the year of the Gregorian calendar, December 31st, introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. New Year’s Eve carries with it the symbol of a fresh start, new life and hope for the future. Resolutions are made, friends are not forgotten and discord is redressed. Until recently I was unaware of the cultural differences that existed, surely, we all held hands whilst singing our native version of “For auld lang syne”? It appears not. The diversity of celebrations is as unique as the variety of cultures, with traditions ranging from smashing plates (and that’s not the Greeks) to carrying around an empty suitcase, each nation brings its own flavour to the melting pot of merriment as it wishes in the New Year.

By Claire-Marie McDonnell

Here are some of my favourites Spain

Belarus

Argentina

The Twelve Grapes is a Spanish tradition that dates back to around 1895.The tradition consists of eating a grape with each bell strike at midnight on 31 December, to encourage a year of prosperity.

In Belarus, a popular game is played to decipher which women will marry first. Each woman sits in front of a pile of corn and a rooster is placed in the middle. Whoever’s corn the rooster chooses is said to be the first to wed.

An easier way to ring in the New Year is practiced in Argentina, where at the stroke of midnight they take their first step with their right foot, thereby, “Starting the year off on the right foot.”

Ecuador

England

In Ecuador at the stroke of midnight, effigies are lit in the tradition of the burning of the “año viejo” – the old year. It marks the symbolic cleansing of any negatives of the previous year and for extra good luck, some even jump the flames 12 times for each month.

In England it is traditional at midnight to join hands and sing “Auld Lang Syne”. This is an old Scottish song that was first published by the poet Robert Burns in the 1796 edition of the book, Scots Musical Museum. It is often remarked that “Auld Lang Syne” is one of the most popular songs that nobody knows the lyrics to.

Russia New Year’s Eve is significant for Russians as under Communist rule in the 20th century, religious holidays – including Christmas – were banned. One custom is to write a new year wish on a piece of paper, set it alight and drop the ashes into your champagne glass – and then drink the contents.

Romania A tradition in rural parts of Romania is to wear bear costumes or animal furs and to dance in the street to ward off evil.

Japan The Japanese have a custom of sending New Year’s Day cards, called nengajo, to their friends and relatives – in a tradition similar to the western custom of sending Christmas cards. Originally, the tradition existed for families and friends living far apart to send their greetings.

Finland One New Year’s Eve, it is customary for the Finnish to carry out molybdomancy, a technique of divination using molten metal. Tin is melted on a stove and dropped into water, and the resulting shape is interpreted as an omen for the future, or is rotated in candlelight to create shadows which are interpreted.

Hogmanay (Scotland) One of the traditions is “first-footing.” Shortly after midnight on New Year’s eve, neighbors pay visits to each other and impart New Year’s wishes. Traditionally, First foots used to bring along a gift of coal for the fire, or shortbread. The Edinburgh Hogmanay celebration is the largest in the country, and consists of an all-night street party.

Greece In Greece, New Year’s day is also the Festival of ST Basil one of the founders of the Greek Orthodox church. One of the traditional foods served is Vassilopitta, or St Basil’s cake. A silver or gold coin is baked inside the cake. Whoever finds the coin in their piece of cake will be especially lucky during the coming year.

United States Probably the most famous tradition in the United States is the dropping of the New Year ball in Times Square, New York City, at 11:59 P.M. Thousands gather to watch the ball make its one-minute descent, arriving exactly at midnight. The tradition first began in 1907. The original ball was made of iron and wood; the current ball is made of Waterford Crystal, weighs 1,070 pounds, and is six feet in diameter.

In Romania, people toss spare coins into the river for good luck.

Switzerland Dropping ice cream on the floor is what they do in Switzerland. (We are not sure how this tradition emerged.)

Peurto Rico In Puerto Rico, people throw buckets of water out of their window to drive away evil spirts.

Turkey In Turkey, they smash pomegranates. The more pieces it breaks in to, the more good luck will come.

Belgium In Belgium, even the livestock get in the spirit as they are decorated and paraded around town with bells ringing.

Columbia Columbia believes that if you carry around an empty suitcase, travel will come your way in the New Year.

Bolivia Many places including Bolivia, like to bake a coin into their sweets. Whoever finds it in the treat will have good luck for the next year (and hopefully not a broken tooth.)

Philippines In the Philippines, they turn on all the lights to ward off evil spirits. They also wear polka dots, as anything round is considered to bring luck and prosperity in the New Year.

Brazil

Peru

In Brazil, everyone wears white to scare away bad spirits.

In Peru, there is a festival in a small village called the Takanakuy Festival, where at the end of the year people settle their differences with a fist fight, so they can start off the year without holding any grudges.

Chile It is traditional for families to sleep beside their loved ones in the cemetery.

113 the riverside journals

Denmark Friends and neighbors smash plates and leave them outside front doors as a sign of affection and to ward off bad spirits for the New Year. It is a measure of popularity to find a pile of broken crockery outside your front door.

Celebrate the winter garden

W

116 the riverside journals

ith autumn behind us and the house sparkling for the Christmas season, it’s tempting to retreat indoors and leave thoughts of the garden until Spring. Surprisingly, this can be the perfect time to look at the garden with new eyes and small improvements can dramatically improve your view, and enjoyment of the winter festive season. As temperatures drop frost reveals a stripped down version of the garden, magically suspended in time, making it easier to plan and visualise improvements. Renovating terraces and paths will remove slippery algae and provide a glowing contrast to the shrubs and trees nearby. Uplighting feature trees or just adding lanterns to the beds along your pathways, will create a welcoming feeling for visitors. Now is a fantastic time to plant specimen trees and shrubs, as their roots penetrate into the deeper warm soil layers and continue to grow, preparing them ready for a great start in spring. Adding feature-rich plants in key positions, such as the Strawberry Tree or the silky tasselled Hazels, and sweetly scented Christmas Box, may be all that is needed to create instant winter interest. Shimmering, silver grasses catch the light and provide movement, and coral coloured dogwoods underplanted with ornamental grasses, will glimmer in a sunny spot. An evergreen avenue, geometric topiary, or the curiously shaped Contorted Willow can create dramatic focal points and structure. Garden furniture, such as elegant tables in polished concrete, are stunning features in themselves. A plant expert can help you recognise the value of the plants you already have in the garden and build on that. A garden designer can help you create more useable, lifestyle friendly spaces. Any time between now and March is a great time, but the sooner the better. Each step you take towards a more beautiful garden is a worthwhile investment, one which you will definitely enjoy throughout winter and spring to follow! For the chance for professional advice to assist in creating a garden of your dreams with the help of Tendercare’s award-winning design team, simply telephone this number 01895 835544 and leave your contact details.

Tuesday 21-Saturday 25 November New Wimbledon Theatre

Catch this brand-new production on its UK tour, which somewhat surreally also visits Korea in June. Lovingly ripped off from the hugely successful 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, this spammier than ever show features misfit knights, killer rabbits, dancing nuns and ferocious Frenchmen. Its comic tunes include Brave Sir Robin, We’re Knights of the Round Table and perennial favourite Always Look on the Bright Side of Life. Join King Arthur as he travels with his hapless Knights of the Round Table on a divine mission to locate the elusive Holy Grail – with uproarious consequences. Into the mix go Zippo lighters, plastic bags and even the proverbial kitchen sink, as familiar items are turned into a beat and the stage explodes with extraordinary energy. One’s weekend pursuits Day One You can check in on the banks of the river Thames at the impressive Hotel Corinthia situated on the Embankment, offering both easy access to the London Eye (where you get an instant panoramic view of the city) and more to see than on the south bank. You can spot all the major sites: The Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral. Seen from above, the Thames meanders through London, encouraging you to take one of the riverboats opposite that cruises gently downstream past the Globe Theatre where Shakespeare’s stage has been beautifully recreated. Disembarking at the amazing success that is the Tate Modern, a huge art gallery converted from an old factory showcasing paintings by Picasso and other modern masters, you can then stroll over the wobbly Millennium bridge which takes you north of the river to St Paul’s Cathedral. Following an exhilarating and exhausting day it is worth retiring to your abode, in this case the delightful Hotel Corinthia where one can indulge in all manner of restorations including spa treatments at the hotel’s stunning new spa followed by dinner at the hotel’s grand and spacious Northall restaurant. If you find yourself indulging in too much pudding, the only thing for it is a wonderful evening stroll along Trafalgar Square, just up the road from the hotel. Paying your respects to Nelson on his magnificent column, continue on to Leicester Square and Shaftesbury Avenue where many of the greatest actors have walked the boards.

Day Two Be sure to make an early start and visit Harrods, the world-famous department store – four floors of indulgence on a magnificent scale. Follow up with a saunter through the stunning streets of Knightsbridge towards Hyde Park Corner where you can borrow a “Boris bike”, a legacy of the city’s former mayor. If you’ve built up your appetite enough, pay your regards to Redemption on Westbourne Grove, a modern eatery offering delicious and healthy vegan fayre. Portobello Road, an absolute must, and the backdrop of Hugh Grant’s haunt in Notting Hill, consists of a long street market with hundreds of antique shops and brica-brac stalls. With no shortage of restaurants off the beaten path one can slip across to Elgin Crescent and find a cosy table at E+O (short for Eastern and Oriental) a beautifully designed restaurant serving delicious dishes such as black cod with sweet miso.

Day Three When you are so near the West End, Mayfair is a must. Stroll down Savile Row and marvel at the time-served tailors. The street is best known for being the undeniable home of handcrafted British bespoke tailoring – so called because when customers used to choose their cloth it was said to “be spoken for”. It’s also where the Beatles took over a rooftop to film Let It Be, to the dismay of the police. From here you can pick up Piccadilly and continue through Burlington Arcade where traditionally the stewards take a dislike to whistling as they consider it lowers the tone of this exclusive parade of boutiques. Finally, onto St James’s the district full of gentlemen’s clubs, cigar shops, shirt makers and top wine merchants, not to mention the highly regarded purveyor of fine goods Fortnum and Mason. Adam Jacot de Boinod is the author of The Meaning of Tingo and Other Extraordinary Words from around the World, published by Penguin Books.
