WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE

LIVING THE HAIR-FREE LIFE Last weekend Katherine Wannan lost her golden locks. We caught up with her to find out more What made you decide take part in the World’s Greatest Shave? Initially I wasn’t [planning] to do the World’s Greatest Shave – I was just going to get a haircut! But I thought it would be a waste to cut it just to have a new hairstyle Was there a particular person who influenced you? My Grandmother has a fridge with photos of all her grandchildren on it. There was one girl I didn’t recognise so I asked my Grandmother, “Who’s that? I don’t know about Her” – She was my Cousin. [At] 5 or 6 She got leukaemia and died when she was 8 or 9 … That got me thinking about other people I knew whose lives had been affected by cancer. I remembered two teachers at my school who died because of brain tumours, and helping one of their daughters deal with the loss of her Mother, as well as my Auntie who lived through breast cancer

1 in 3 people will be affected by cancer in their lives … I know that leukaemia in particular is experienced by a lot of children. Coming from a rural background I understand, to go into the city [as a child] when you are already sick, and already feeling uncomfortable is a very difficult thing to do. An organisation that can give money toward a home for you and your family for a few days or a week or a few months is a big thing:

$2000 can support major research for a week, and that $1200 can provide free transport for a month to 200 families How long had you been growing your hair? I’ve always had long hair! The shortest it’s been was when I was 5 or 6; even then it was about shoulder length. When did you decide to let it grow longer? I consciously started growing it in Year 11 and let it grow through Year 12, my gap year, and all of last year Is there anything you like about the hair-free lifestyle? Oh the things that I love about having no hair! I love not having to do my hair each morning, [and I really love] not having to wash it for hours! Have you had any weird experiences after you shaved it off? Initially I had ‘phantom hair!’ I’d turn my head thinking I would be hit on the shoulder, only to go “No, wait!” That took about 4 days to go away! Another thing is the breeze blowing across my head; oh, and I have to wear a hat, because I don't want to get a sunburnt scalp. Would you do it again? I would incur the wrath of too many people if I did it again!   • .................................................................................

WATER POLO 101 It’s just rugby, football, basketall and underwater wrestling mixed together – how hard can it be?

Volleyball [n]: a sport in which Menzies dug, spiked, chicken wang, and blocked to victory!

INTER-COLLEGE

Volleyball

It could have changed when Questionable ref calls bewlidered many of our players; thankfully Joey ‘The Diplomat’ Crane intervened before things got too heated

Pump Up the Volley-ume — Menzies Undefeated!

Things went swimmingly for ... Guy’s Defence Tactics: i.e., standing infront of the net with outretched arms (in a similar fashion to the ‘Y’ in YMCA) to intimidate and bewilder the opposing team

Upper hand Menzies not only had seasoned players sporting slick new sport shirts, but also a showing of support on the sidelines; a fantastic start to the Inter-coll Sporting Comp!

Not so swimmingly for ... Guy’s Communication: at one point, Angus fell in front of Joey who then (as a pair) took out Johnno as well – much confusion ensued

Big moment Angel’s sensational serves appeared to have a paralytic effect thus allowing her to score successive aces against the opposition — whoomp there it is

What does it all mean? Taking out straight sets, we find ourselves in the lead, with DLC second, then The Village  •

HISTORY Originated in 1876 as “water rugby” in reaction to the public’s boredom with swimming carnivals of the time: ain’t nobody got time ’fo laps TEAM Consists of seven players treading water, who put the need to breathe second to sporting victory OBJECTIVE Stay above the water whilst everyone tries to push you under. Between thrashing around, gasping for air and excessive groping, attempt to shoot the ball past the goalie – this torture game play takes place within the space of 7 minute quarters (simple!) RULES Only really exist above the surface (which isn’t often). Underneath, anything goes; water polo is pretty much Survival of the Fittest disguised as a sport INTER-COLLEGE WATER POLO
