Wellness Week
The concept for Wellness Week began two years ago when Bethany Hadfield decided RMC should celebrate Mental Health Week. With the help of some of her friends (myself included) she organised a very successful week including activities to raise awareness in the common room and a talk by some residents in S conference. I think this is an ideal example of the impact individual students can have on the traditions and activities of the college even if they aren’t in any special position (Beth was not an RT at the time). Last year Mental Health Week continued as a D block run event with the addition
4
of more activities including making stress balls and face painting. This year the aim was to continue the tradition created and built by Beth, and also to make it something official in the college calendar. Wellness Week focuses on five aspects of wellness; physical, mental, intellectual, social and spiritual. The community team tried to represent these different facets of wellness throughout the week with stress ball craft and brain games (Scattergories) on Monday (intellectual), a bush walk, bonfire and talk from our resident minister Lily on Tuesday (spiritual), Yoga with Yogi and laser tag with Laser Warriors
on Wednesday (physical), an homage to Beth’s original Mental Health Week with henna semi colons to raise awareness about suicide and painting the thumb and pinky nails to represent phoning 1800CareMQ or any other support service and a wonderful stress workshop run by Miriam, followed by throwing darts at balloons painstakingly filled with paint by Elle Yeo and a piñata to let out some stress (mental) and finally to end the RTs’ program for the week we played a game of Humans vs Zombies to promote social wellness. Humans vs Zombies is a game brought to college in 2015 by the Student Executive president Leon Dhemba. Whenever college has organised a game of Humans vs Zombies it has been an overwhelming success with students from all walks of life finding different places in college to hide or barricade against the attacking zombie horde! This year’s game saw Korissa and Co. locating some secret spot that is reported to be so good no one would ever find it.
Overall the week was amazing and has hopefully allowed many of our residents to discover new avenues for improving their own personal wellness as well as to have some fun and make some awesome memories. Love from Jess Moran and the Community RTs p.s. During our original planning phases we decided to crown a Wellness Warrior which would be the person who participated in the most events. Though we ended up not advertising the competition we were still keeping our eye out for RMC’s very own Wellness Warrior and this year’s winner having gone to almost all events with the exclusion of one that interfered with her bedtime and having being attended Miriam’s stress workshop and rating their overall stress as a 2/10 “because I’m a kid”. Izzy Mildenhall is RMC’s Wellness Warrior! Congrats Izzy, you really deserve this.

Surprising Wellness Facts You Didn’t Already Know
Adults who eat a little bit of chocolate five times a week are thinner than those who eat it less frequently. Drinking green tea improves your working memory, which allows your brain to process more pieces of information at once. Expressing gratitude boosts happiness and decreases depression! Ginger is a natural antispasmodic compound, which means it helps reduce cramping, in addition to alleviating nausea and promoting digestion. When we read on a screen, we remember less than when we read things in print. Eating foods high in lycopene (tomatoes!!) can make you less susceptible to sunburn. Taking photos interferes with your memory of an event. Bananas relieve belly bloating. Caffeine fights headaches by constricting the dilated blood vessels responsible for pain.

Spring Festival The flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping and the kitchen menu has changed can only mean one thing… Spring is finally here. Last Saturday saw the annual Spring Festival at RMC. Not even a morning shower could dampen the mood of the activities of the day. With Lanterns, fairy lights, tissue paper flowers and Pip’s bedroom flowers scattered around the place, the courtyard was transformed into a spring extravaganza. It was a relaxed afternoon with a variety of arts and craft such as tie-dye shirts, origami, painting and henna. But most importantly there was a plethora of food and drink to go around, including chocolate covered strawberries and an Australian childhood favourite ‘spider’ drinks. The afternoon also saw the return of the giant Jenga with some fierce competitions, as well as the classic lawn game Bocce. However, the event was not over…
The SVF committee, as lead by Pip, organised a truly horrible smoothie challenge between Exec and RTs, in the aims to raise money for charity. The teams consisted of Jonty & Pasi for the Exec, Jess & Jake for the RTs, and Pip & Keelan downing a vegan smoothie option. Whilst seemingly okay ingredients such as coffee, veggie juice, sardines and oreos were added to each blender, the combination of them all made for some utterly disgusting drinks. Shout out to Pasi who after downing his brown concoction went straight to the gym. Special thank you to Pip for organising the smoothie challenge and being a moral support, Jess and Kaanchi for helping with the arts and craft, my wonderful block captains, and the exec for everything. I definitely could not have pulled off the day without you. Overall, it was a lovely afternoon to celebrate spring at RMC. Keely McDermott

BASKETBALL On Sunday the 15th of October, Menzies entered the gym ready to challenge the Village and DLC at Basketball in one of the final games of Inter-college Sport. Big congratulations to both Menzies teams, who ended up winning every single game they played! Sports Rep Pasi quotes about the girl’s game against DLC “We destroyed DLC”. Shout out to Lilly’s three pointer just before the buzzer went off. What’s Next: Dodgeball.

CINEMA UNDER THE STARS With admission only $2, on Thursday 19th October at 7:30pm the gates opened for RMC’s first ever Cinema under the Stars. Rather than paying normal movie prices at Mac Centre, the courtyard was grounds open to cheaply procrastinate from studying. All the money raised went to the Batyr foundation, a youth mental health organisation. Batyr was launched in 2011, after its founder Sebastian Robertson experienced the frustration and isolation of living silently with mentally ill individuals whilst at university. He recognised that honest conversations needed to be had about mental health with the youth of our generation and founded this organisation, naming it after Batyr (‘hero’), the Talking Elephant From Kazakhstan. It is said that out of every 30 students in Australia, 5 will suffer mental illness in silence and only 2 will reach out for support. We raised $103 for this important organisation, helping and supporting the many young Australians suffering from mental illness.

August: Osage County Macquarie University’s Drama Society (DRAMAC) put on an extraordinary production of Tracy Lett’s award winning play, ‘August: Osage County’. The dramatic and gripping play is centred around the Weston family, brought together when their patriarch, poet and alcoholic Beverly Weston goes missing. The three hour duration of the play follows the aftermath, where the audience witnesses the outrage by his wife Violet, also depressed and addicted to pain pills, and her three daughters with their problematic lovers. Full of deep secrets, family challenges, cruelty, and chaos, tensions boil on the stage, grabbing your attention from the very beginning. The Lighthouse Theatre at the University was an intimate venue to see this action unfold. With warnings of drug addiction, suicide, alcoholism, violence, and coarse language: this didn’t stop the theatre from almost filling up with an audience waiting in anticipation to watch their fellow students perform. Big shout out to Menzies’ very own resident, Sam Hutchinson, on his amazing performance in this production. Playing not one, but two characters: Little Charles Aiken and Beverly Weston.

Humans When I left the ancient sands of Alaska for Australia, I wasn’t sure who I was. I was on a journey of self discovery, in a far away land. I didn’t have much besides my heart, and my luscious locks. I heard about this prison that was looking for someone to empty their bins you know, like not ‘empty empty’, just sort of move them from a to b on their journey to being emptied. I guess that’s the biggest thing I’ve discovered - life is like a bin - it just gets emptied into another bin over and over again and then eventually ends up in landfill somehow, where ibises peck at you all day. I’m happy with who I am because I’ve learned who I am. I never thought that by taking care of other people’s rubbish, I could come to know myself. Toby the Binman

of RMC Day by day, I always say to myself “what are you doing with your life?”, and frankly, I have no clue. At the age of 25, you begin to question these things; you think about why you’re only just completing your bachelor’s, while your sister who’s 21 has completed two doctorates and is currently training for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in hurdling. It could be the copious amounts of hours on FIFA… but let’s not point fingers. I always looked back and think “maybe this isn’t the career for you”, and when you spend so many hours being an avid wine reviewer, you start to think that maybe there is an alternative to living at RMC and the whole no alcohol situation. Maybe it’s time to start living out my second dream. Maybe it’s time for me to move out into the wider world and follow my other passion… My passion of becoming Mr. Olympia. My dream of becoming just like Arnie; masculine, intellectual, politically powerful; the Terminator, turned Governator. Just you wait America, there’s something brewing from Australia, and it isn’t Fosters. Daniel Zhou
