Earth Hour 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of Earth Hour. This event is Australian grown and has become a global force climaxing worldwide. By turning everything off for an hour, this symbolic hour has drawn great attention to the issue of global warming. Menzies not only drew attention to this environmental cause but celebrated ten years of the progress dealing with climate change. The night was spent with switching the lights off and heading down into the courtyard to embrace the darkness with plenty of food and company.

Easter Chocolate, coloured eggs, and cute little bunnies- what’s more exciting than Easter? An Easter Hunt!! However, why easter eggs? Eggs have been associated with the Christian festival of Easter in accordance with the celebration of the death and resurrection of Christ. The egg has long been a symbol of ‘fertility’, ‘rebirth’ and ‘the beginning’. This is reflected in many different religions and cultures. In Egyptian mythology, the phoenix burns its nest to be reborn later from the egg remaining in the nest; Hindu scriptures relate that the world developed from an egg. With the rise of Christianity in Western Europe, the church adapted many pagan customs, therefore the egg came to represent the Resurrection of Christ due to its symbolism toward life. The earliest Easter eggs were hen or duck eggs decorated at home in bright colours with vegetable dye and charcoal. The 17th and 18th centuries saw egg-shaped toys develop to be given to children at Easter. Chocolate Easter eggs were first made in Europe in the early 19th century. Imagine Easter without chocolate eggs? Yeah, we couldn’t either…..

Netball Dressed alike in our navy Menzies shirts, a fierce turn out trudged their way to the gym in order to face DLC and the Village in netball. With a sneaky practice before the game, our spirits were high and ready to take on the opposition. The Menzies girls took the court with hopeful odds as 13 girls were playing. Through elaborate game plans and careful position changes, the girls dominated the court winning both games against DLC and the Village. The Menzies boys entered the court with little knowledge of the rules but still fought for the ball. Caps still worn, and many offsides called, the boys played an intense game against both teams. As quoted by the umpire: “The Menzies boys are the better athletes for sure.” Unfortunately, a win wasn’t on our side but that didn’t stop the boys from enjoying the game. Shoutout to Josh Lamb for his awesome netball skills.

Dr. P’s Creative Eating
Well our menu is great, loving some of the new options. I thought one day is there any way I can add to my lunch. The first idea I had was how to improve schnitty day. I have previously had a schnitty sandwich: bread, lettuce and mayo. That was great. Perhaps next time garlic aioli instead. Then I thought could I have a chicken parmie instead. So I tried tomato sauce, ham with a slice of cheese on top and then into the microwave to melt the cheese. As my fellow colleagues looked at me with that “you’re mad” look- I took my first mouthful. They were right, it was rubbish. Next time a better tomato paste and a better cheese mix, one recipe calls for mozzarella, parmesan and cheddar cheese mixed. Another variation came from Julian Alphabet. At one lunch he had some hommos (food.com has 8 ways to spell hommos) with some bits of sliced carrot and cucumber. Now I have entrée and main, dessert to go, wait that’s a piece of fruit. I love to try other possibilities, shoot them to me and I will try them.

Roman ‘Round the World Hi! My name is Mitchell Smith and I’ve been asked to give advice on travel in this week’s issue of ‘The Voice’. Having travelled through twelve of Europe’s countries, and embarked on an incredibly impromptu road-trip around the South Island of New Zealand, I’m here to provide you all with some tips to making the most of your holiday.
It goes without saying, organisation is key. Being a few bus tickets and hostel-bookings ahead makes a world of difference in enjoying the moment. Failure to keep organised may leave you considering sleeping under a bus shelter for the night because you forgot to book an extra night in your hostel, or forgetting public transport only runs three days a week in Iceland thus paying an over-priced hitchhiking fee just to get back into Reykjavik in time for your flight.
Be smart in your spending so that you may indulge in those ‘touristy’ pleasures. Take the late-night ferry, catch the cheaper bus with more stops. With those extra euros you’ve saved, you’ll find yourself eating at a café in the heart of Capri, or buying a pass to skip the infamous Vatican queue. My final tip is harder than it sounds: talk. Speak to tourists, hostel workers, waiters or that cutie next to you at the bar. Track down that familiar Australian accent amongst the Croatian crowd. Despite travelling with close friends, my travels wouldn’t have been the same without the people I met along the way. The fun I had running around Rome at midnight, trying to ride golf-carts in Montenegro, cooking up a storm next to New Zealand’s biggest glacier, and partying in Prague were owed to the people I met along the way. Hopefully you have all learnt something from this article and your future travels are better off for it. Bon voyage!
Mitchell Smith

Living in a Different Country - The TCK Life I am a Third Culture Kid (TCK), and I am sure others of you are. What is a TCK? It is someone who grows up in another culture different from their parents. For me, my parents are from Australia but I did all of high school in Indonesia at the British International School. This means, I may look and sound Australian, but I know more British History and Geography than Australian and occasionally snigger at the word “thong” and say things like “tippex” and “belum” in my sentences without meaning to. I also struggle with the question “Where are you from?” This leads me to calculate the various answers I could give and what is the best response in the given time. I could say “Australia” – as I was born there and did years 2 to 6 of primary school in Sydney. I could also add the fun fact that I lived on Norfolk Island for 4 years from the age of 4 to 8. I can say “Indonesia” but that tends to cause further explanation or I could also say “Hong Kong” because that is where my parents are now living and that is where I go “home” to during holidays. However, my parents only moved there four months ago so I am not really from there. But then that leads to the question “Where is home?” For me I have learnt to adapt home to anywhere. For me currently it is my B block room at RMC and then my home away from RMC is wherever my parents are, which happens to be Hong Kong at the moment. But at other times it has been Norfolk Island, RMC, South Jakarta, Central Jakarta, C block, A block, D block, B block and Hong Kong. Here is a list of other signs that you might be a TCK too: 1. The concept of home is not normal. 2. You are at least bilingual 3. And you often slip foreign slang into your English by mistake, which makes you unintelligible to most people. 4. You like to believe you’ve mastered jet lag. 5. You’re a master at packing the night before your flight. 6. You don’t know what team to cheer for during the Olympics or a World Cup. 7. You fall in love with the local cuisine in the country that you are living in and then miss it when you are away. 8. You have approximately eight different clocks time zones on your clock app. 9. Your anxiety level rises when you are asked for a permanent address. 10. You get early or a day late ‘Happy Birthday’ posts on Facebook from your friends in other countries. 11. The end of the school year sucked because half of your friend group moved away. 12. You’ve spent an absurd and probably unhealthy amount of time on airplanes. 13. Your circle of best friends is as politically, racially, and religiously diverse as the United Nations. 14. You’ve had the most rigorous sensitivity training of all: real life. 15. You know that McDonald’s tastes drastically different from country to country. 16. You convert any price to two different currencies before making significant purchases. 17. Love it or hate it, you have a strong and well-informed opinion on the I.B. system. 18. Now you feel incredibly lucky to have loved ones and memories scattered all over the globe. 19. You know better than anyone else that “home” isn’t a place, it’s the people in it. 20. And you wouldn’t change your experiences for anything else! Beth Hadfield

“For as long as I can remember I have loved music, all kinds of music, from many different eras and genres. A few favourites would have to be 70’s rock and surf rock. If you are reading this and don’t really know what surf rock is, I recommend you give the band Skegss a listen. Anyway, music is like an escape, and if you know me, you know I am one to spend most of my weekends and a few cheeky weeknights at a gig or festival. I can regularly be seen right in the middle of a death mosh. Mosh pits are pretty scary to some people. Being in a mosh is a bit like being in uni. You’re mostly in the dark, it’s pretty rough and there’s usually a weird, old person who definitely shouldn’t be there. The physical impact from one gig goer to another, is a lot like the impact of the assessment rush you feel in about week 3 of a semester. One moment you are just there, doing your thing, and the next you are on the floor, kind of drunk with a bleeding nose. And the feeling you get when you wake up the next morning, is a bit like handing in your last assessment. You don’t really remember how you got here, but at least you still have your pants.” Drew

“My story starts when I was a young kid in a shopping centre with my familynot knowing that the next few hours would send me on a path of duty and destiny. Whilst browsing the ‘Beach as Bro’ shirts in Supre, I began to wonder where my parents were. I thought my dad was looking at the boob tubes, but in fact my family was gone… I realised that I was lost. Being found alone by Security, I was taken under their wing and raised to be one of them. Which made me want to be nothing but Shopping Centre Security. To be able to help the public while striking fear into the hearts of thieves and millennials such as Pat McCoy (who always gets Taro tea with Tapioca Balls). This made me pursue a Bachelor of Security Studies at Macquarie University. I have never understood why no one else wants to be a mall cop.” Mac Centre’s Future Mall Cop
