FOOTBALL ART WEEK College talents connect the dots

AN ‘EARTH’ WITHOUT ‘ART’ IS JUST ‘EH’ As children we have been inspired to be creative and take interest in various art forms. Many of us learnt the piano, went to ballet, and like any primary school child had to finger-paint a placemat for Father’s Day back in the day only to become the next picasso in our father’s eyes.

At university, many of us express ourselves through essay-writing, mathematical formulation and anything in-between. Yet, sometimes we forget to let our creative inner-child loose on days that aren’t ranch night.

We don’t want you to ever lose your creative bone; whether it be drawing, painting or dancing to Beyonce’s new album with your door locked. Never forget to take time once in a while to draw a flower, write a short-story, take photos and just enjoy every moment because art is all around us - we just sometimes forget to have a good look.

With the leaves colouring and Winter approaching, Sunday the 17th of May dawned with a chill in the air. We gathered our balls, shoes, shin pads and whatever else we needed and marched the (endless) march to the Macquarie Uni fields - to do battle once more with DLC and the Village. Arriving at the field, we were in shock as we were greeted by an actual team from the Village! The girls triumphed in their game against the village but weren’t so lucky going up against DLC. The boys put on a great match, but they too fell to DLC (and the Village. But no one really cares). Congratulations on a well played season Menzies, lets up the anti for Semester 2! Special Mentions Hannah: for two amazing goals

Anna for pretty amazing playing

Jasmin for lining up an amazing goal... and then missing

Jack and Maddie for a stunning rendition of ‘Don’t Stop Believing (Glee Cast Version)’ Soccer Matt for showing us why he is called ‘Soccer Matt’

Rachel, Hannah and Jack encounter a PASM

Once upon a time, three people stood in a field on a Sunday. They had to prepare food for their friends, who had been working very hard, but there was no fire to cook the meat. They ventured to a neighbouring field, in hopes of finding someone willing to share fire with them. After a while they came across a field in which a mighty fire was roaring. Feeling confident the three walked towards a lady standing next to the fire. “Hello there!”, said Rachel, the shortest of the three. “We haven’t been able to start our fire...” began Jack, the tallest of the three, before he was rudely cut off by the woman. “That is none of my concern”, she said, her tired eyes reflecting the blaze. “We were just wondering how you managed to start your fire?”, asked Hannah, the middlest of the three. “I don’t have fire” She replied, rather redundantly, as she clearly stood by a large fire, the smell of cooking meat wafting up the noses of the young heroes. “Well how did you start that?”, questioned Jack. The woman was growing angry, obviously not happy that three nice young people were seeking her help. “I used a piece of paper”, Her reply was tart. “Which just miraculously burst into flame”, Rachel took a step towards the woman as she spoke. “Rachel don’t, she is a PASM.”, Hannah grabbed her arm to hold her back, whispering in her ear. “A what?”, Rachel asked. “A Passive Aggressive Soccer Mum. And this is her natural territory”, Hannah said, as softly as she could while remaining audible. “Begone children. Go and find whoever owns these fields to help you. Do not make me ask you again”, The PASM threatened. Deciding not to risk a fight, the three turned and walked back across the field. As they neared the edge, a tall boy was walking down the lane. They stopped him as he passed. “Good afternoon! What brings you three out to these parts? Don’t you know what roams around here on Sundays?”, He seemed friendly enough, so the three decided to impart their story to him. “You certainly got yourselves in a scrape! But you needn’t worry anymore”, he smiled and pulled from his pocket a flint and a fire striker. “I used to be called Matt, but now I guess you can call me Prometheus”, the tall boy laughed on and on, making the other three somewhat uncomfortable but they fell upon the tall boy in gratitude, turning themselves into a hugging mass.Their troubles were over for they now had fire. They cooked a fine meal and returned home safely. This is a true story. It happened to a friend of a friend of mine.

ARTS WEEK 2015 Dear Diary, May the Fourth saw the arrival of the annual R MC Arts Week, promising an event every night to keep us entertained. Today was the Shakespeare recital. Apparently Shakespeare himself was there, but I think it was just Benjamin in a Shakespeare outfit. There were some great performances this year including. Leon and Matt Su who won and Sherlock who cwas runner up.

Dear Diary, Arts week continued today with the Chalk Art competition. Nothing better than kneeling on cold concrete drawing with chalk. Especially when the chalk wears down and you grate your fingers on the concrete. Anyway Diary, Connie Noon and Lydia Lindfield drew a picture of Tony Abbott, which I guess is the last time he is going to win anything. Sophie Harris’ ability to draw fish is off the hook (haha). She came second.

Dear Diary, We got our Bollywood wiggle on tonight, Diary. Led by the brilliant Sheena Bala, we learnt some moves learnt some grooves. Not really a lot to say about it, except it was a great night! I also saw the photos from the photo comp - Beth and korissa won the competition!

Dear Diary, Arts week is nearly over! Can’t believe it. Tonight Tayhla Ryder taught us the basics of portraiture. I think it’s a skill that needs practice because mine isn’t that good. Haha. Anyways, it was a bunch of fun and Tayhla was a great teacher .

Dear Diary, Tonight Arts week came to a close with the annual R MC Revue. Man R MC has some talent. Sheena performed an Indian dance and stole the show (and won the Revue). Patrick Newall managed to melt my ice heart with his Chris Martin-esque vocals. Maddie Martin and Ryan Stoltz hosted the night and they did a great job. The night finished with a brand new competition (apparently the one they used to have caused some problems last year). ‘Menzies Next Top Model’ provided the best of ‘Top Model’ and ‘Project Runway’ combined - shallow models and shoddy clothes put together in no time. It was a great way to end the show. THEVOICE 5

THE CHALK ART

Tayhla Ryder

C-BLock | Residentialtutor What’s your degree? Bachelor of Social Science, Major in Anthropology What’s your medium (music/art/writing etc): I draw (both traditionally and digitally) and paint. I feel like paint is more forgiving when you mess it up, plus it is fun to be all expressionistic with! When did you become interested in it? My parents got me into art classes as a kid after seeing what I was making in preschool, but I only really got into exploring it in the last five or so years And what’s your favourite musician/ artist/author? You know it is ridiculous to ask for one, so I am just going to go all out and name a bunch: Canova, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Klimt, Alma-Tadema, John Singer Sargent, JMW Turner, Fiona Banner, David Shrigley, Marina Abramovic

Favourite piece you have created: I am most happy with whatever I made last – because once I’ve seen it too much I end up hating it and noticing what I would do differently. Also one time I made an oil painting that didn’t completely suck… If I have to pick one I would say the painting of poet Rupi Kaur and model/ film-maker Kiran Rai What’s the inspiration behind it? These two women aren’t a whole lot older than us but they are creating amazing things and throwing everything they have into their work - their compassion and creativity inspired me and I had to paint them! What drives you to create? It sounds pretentious as hell, but I’ve been making art as way to calm down and clear out my head for so long, I don’t know what to do without it My drive to create also comes from wanting to create something that is even a tiny fraction as wonderful as that of other artists, whose work is basically visual joy and makes the universe a better place to be

How about your favourite song/artwork/book? Pretty much every sketch Mucha has ever done, have you seen them??!

Alexis Worthing S - Block resident

What is your degree? Arts majoring in Writing What is your medium (music/art/writing etc)? Writing When did you become interested in it? I have been a writer for as long as I can remember…my mum always loved books, and I think it came from her always reading them to me and encouraging me to tell stories. Who is your favourite musician/artist/author? I have a lot of favourite authors… Currently I really like Terry Pratchett, but as a kid I always loved Emily Rodda and Enid Blyton. How about your favourite song/artwork/ book? I have loved Harry Potter since I was 5, so that has to be up there. I also really liked this book I read in year 11, Between by Jessica Warman.

Your Favourite piece that you have created? Currently I’m nearly finished a book I’ve been working on for a couple of years now (trying to find in between the HSC and now uni isn’t easy, I think I only have 2 chapters to go though!) The working title is Luna Brown; Ignored, Forgotten. What is the inspiration behind it? I don’t even remember, it’s been so long since I started writing, and even longer since I started creating this story. What drives you to create? I just love it. I’ve always loved books, and ever since I can remember I’ve loved creating them.

A Short Story by Alexis I push myself through the still, clear, water. A skyscraper rises above me, its front door swept aside. Gliding inside, I find myself in the lobby of a posh hotel. The floor is a dark marble, the frames and edging gold. If I push myself down, I can place my feet on the bottom and pretend as though I’m walking. Once, people would have once bustled too and fro through this space. It’s almost as if they never felt, their luggage is still scattered across the furniture. On one particular chair, a child’s penguin lies abandoned, its fur a patchworks of different fabrics, stitches woven all over it as it was mended time and time again. What could have happened to its owner to make them abandon a toy so greatly treasured? Picking it up, it’s heavy in my hands. Squeezing it, small bubbles of air float out and drift in slow spirals towards the ceiling. They have no-where to go, no hope of escape from their underwater prison. I let the penguin fall again. It’s of no importance to my mission. I leave the hotel again, and continue down what was once the main street. If it wasn’t for the water pressing in, it would be almost as it was meant to be. Apart from the lack of people. Everywhere there were signs of life. Cars parked outside shops, mannequins in expensive clothes in the windows. Coffee shops with large comfortable couches and cup of now cold coffee. The inflow of the water hadn’t disturbed much, not even the content of these cups. But there were no people anywhere. It was like a painting that wasn’t quite finished. The little details were there, but the subject was missing. I passed shop after shop as I swam along the street. I glanced in the front window, sometimes stepping foot through the front door to check the corners. I examined the cars. No-where were there any people. In a fraction of a second everyone had gone. Snatched away to the safety of land. They hadn’t even had time to panic. Reaching the end of the street, I checked my air. It was low, the little dial edging towards the orange. I had another few shops to check before I could declare today’s mission a failure. It had been five weeks now of constant search. I had seen more streets of this city than even the inhabitant would have. Under the last car I found it. I saw the red shoes first, then the white stockings. It wasn’t until I reached her red checked skirt that I realised what I had found. The only causality. A girl of about eight who hadn’t been transported with everyone else. I pulled her out gently, her long yellow hair flowing around her. She was pale, her lips turned blue. Her face was relaxed, I would almost call it peaceful. On her wrist was a silver bracelet, a blue stone glistening in its centre. I wrapped my arms tightly around her, kicking my feet to propel us upward. The buildings fell away beside us. It felt disrespectful to pull her away from this grave. Down here it was peaceful: a city frozen in a moment. There was nothing left but silence. Up above there was noise and chaos, the bustling of a world trying to rebuild. A group of scientists waited for her, waiting to tear her apart to find out why she’d been left behind. At least down here she would be at rest. But it was my mission, and the mission comes first.

Adam Watts C-Block resident What’s your degree? Bachelor of Information Technology What’s your medium (music/art/writing etc)? Music. Drums and percussion. When did you become interested in it? I was in year 2 and if I wanted to join the school band I had to go into a room with the band master and he made me play a few different instruments. After playing trumpet and trombone he gave me his keys and told me to repeat a rhythm after him. I must have been pretty good at that as that’s how I started playing drums and have been playing for 12 years now. Sorting hat much? Who is your favourite musician/artist/author? The Amity Affliction

How about your favourite song/artwork/ book? HMAS Lookback by The Amity Affliction. If you have a look at my phone case I have the lyrics of the chorus on it. And most importnatly, what’s your favourite piece that you have created? I’m currently in a band named Evocatus. We play heavy metal and we have released a self-titled EP which is free. Search Evocatus on Facebook and click on the music tab for the download. My favorite piece I have created with the band would have to be Axios Legionnaire. New content is coming soon. Stay tuned! What drives you to create? Breakdowns, head banging and the thrill of performing original content on stage with mates is an awesome feeling. It’s the best feeling to see people getting into our songs at gigs and you meet some great people along the way.
