Fun Run Joggers and activewear weren’t compulsory, as many residents dressed crazily for the North Ryde Fun Run. This event was one not to be missed with contributions going toward supporting youth mental health. Special shoutout to superhuman Keelan on winning the 5K run!

Grooves in the grass BYO and even better tunes, saw Menzies lounge in the Dunmore Lang’s courtyard last Sunday. The weather was fine and the music topped the afternoon off. From rapping to indie folk, each performer gave it their all and were rewarded with an appreciative applause. Special thanks to all that performed. Cindy, Pasi, Haley and Michael, you all owned the stage with incredible talent.

‘The Who, Why and What of Jesus’ Residents were enlightened by the discussion conducted by Phillip Jenson upon the subject of ’The Who, Why and What of Jesus’ at the latest Forum. Mr Jenson spoke passionately about the bible and Jesus Christ, exemplifying just how much dedication he has given to his strong belief. Whilst listening to this interesting talk, it was obvious that many of us aren’t aware of how little we know about Jesus and the sacrifices he made for his people. As Mr Jenson spoke about the steps of accepting Jesus, he made it apparent that in order to have faith we need to give our lives to Jesus, and take on the journey illustrated within these steps. At Robert Menzies, our Christian church, Trinity Chapel Macquarie (TCM) allows residents to be enlightened with this information. The Chaplains encourage all residents to explore their beliefs. TCM meet each Sunday at 10am and 5:30pm.

Make Room For Life It’s the end of paper-shuffling, marathon meetings, coffee to gojuggling road raging and commuting while catching your breath. But it’s the beginning of life. Because I am home. Make room for a new beginning. New linen for a new resident. It might be the start of a new beautiful friendship. Make room for family and for your friends. For those who let you down, but might just be there in the end. Make room for wins, and losses. For bosses and their never-ending stories about the office. Make room for the first time, and the last time. The ones in between, and the past time. Make room for one more, for the dance floor. And make sure you make room for whatever it is that you stand for. Make room for love, make room for loss. For the things you cherish, whatever the cost. Make room just to make it really nice. Make sure you make room for life.

Servant Leadership – our model at RMC. It’s Leadership Season here at RMC! RTs have just been appointed for 2018, and the RMCSA elections are coming right up. As I’ve been thinking about who to appoint as RTs, and who to encourage to stand for election, my thoughts have continually returned to the phrase ‘servant leadership’. ‘Servant leadership’ is the model we strive to emulate in all our structures at RMC. All people in positions of leadership at RMC – from the Master down – seek to serve those around them in different ways. The staff, student executive, Residential Tutors and Duty Officers are all appointed to serve the residents of the college. In part this is because of our Christian foundations and ethos. We seek to serve, because we follow a leader – Jesus – who came ‘not to be served, but to serve’ (Mark 10:45), and who ultimately gave his life to serve us. And so, when we look for new leaders in college, we look for people who naturally serve others, rather than who are natural leaders. But it’s not just because we’re Christian. Over the past few decades, the idea of ‘servant leadership’ has been taking hold in the secular business world too. Robert K. Greenleaf’s Servant Leadership: A Journey into the Nature of Legitimate Power, published in 1977, has proven hugely influential. Greenleaf’s suggestion is that people ‘will freely respond only to individuals who are chosen as leaders because they are proven and trusted as servants’ (Greenleaf, 1977). Servant leadership doesn’t mean being a doormat, or never disagreeing with anyone, or being lax about discipline. But it does mean that leadership is other-person-centered. It is about what is best for the one being led, and not what is best for the leader. As we appoint and elect new leaders for 2018, I see a group of excellent young women and men who I am confident will continue to serve their fellow residents in their new leadership positions, because they are those who have already demonstrated a desire to serve first. Katrina Clifford.

c e x E t n e d u t S

The student executive is a fundamental part of the college community. The team elected has the ability to shape and change the culture at RMC and represent what you, the members of RMC want. It’s not about popularity or what their intentions may be. When voting for the candidates for their respective roles please acknowledge how they have immersed themselves within the college community. Take note of what plans they have made for the future of the executive, and please carefully elect candidates that you want to be your leaders of 2018. And remember, these are the people that represent you and your vote will decide who will be in the 2018 student executive. So please make it an exec you would proud of. Zoe and Keely

The Voice does not endorse any particular candidate for any postion. Inclusion in this edition was entirely the responsibility of the candidates.

Jack Harvey President

I assume by this stage many would know that I would like to be President of RMC in 2018, however I do not believe I have told everyone why. How about you take a trip down memory lane with me and let’s find out how we ended up here. `I was blessed richly throughout my time growing up in the country of NSW. I came to an understanding of what it meant to be part of a community, one where I was constantly challenged in all aspects of my life. One aspect that resonated with me was how I serve the people around me. We live, very much, in a consumerist society where we look to receive something for everything we give. This was very much in contrast to how I was raised. With my parents as a role model, I constantly sought to serve others for the benefit of their lives, not my own. Yes, this was exhausting and yes, sometimes I felt my service was wasted but then these small pockets of pure joy popped up and spurred me on. I remember a time when I was helping to cook food for the disadvantaged members of our community, I’d do it week in week out. One week I saw a small kid, probably around 6, who was hiding off to the side looking intently at the food that was being cooked. I asked “what’s up?”, he replied “that food smells so good”. “Come grab some then” gesturing to come grab a plate. Looking at the ground, reluctantly, he whispered “I don’t have any money”. I smile back “it’s free” and the smile that formed on his face was wider than Sydney Harbor. Through many moments like this I came to realise it was about how much can I give regardless of my own gain. Another reason is my passion for leadership. While many aspects of my leaderships is visible through the ways I serve, it is not possible alone. One of tremendous assets of working within a group is that there is a chance to achieve something great with many unique skills present. I would love to lead a group that utilises the expertise of all members to the service and betterment of the diverse community that resides at RMC.

Lauren O’Sullivan President

1. Who is Lauren O’Sullivan? I’m originally from the Central Coast and am studying Commerce-Law. I am currently the fresher representative on the Cultural Committee and therefore already have an idea of how the exec team runs. 2. Why is Lauren running for President? I love RMC, I really do, but I am not blind to areas that need improvement. In particular I believe that RMC is lacking in education of topics such as sexual health, sexual assault, drugs and alcohol. Considering these can cause major issues in a college environment, there should be greater emphasis on them to ensure all residents are safe, healthy and happy. It is also necessary to diversify our college and make it an accepting one. This would involve placing a larger focus on our international residents, LGBTQI community and the like. 3. Why should I vote for Lauren? I was chosen to attend NAAUC this year, which is the National Association of Australian University Colleges. Throughout the week, I was effectively trained to be a member of the exec. I gained invaluable knowledge, specifically on being the president of a college. With the help of the exec team and fellow residents, I believe that I will make undeniably positive change in RMC in 2018.

Mitch Smith Vice President

About Mitch: Looking for a strong independent man, who can also show a bit o’lovin? I’m that man. I’ve sacrificed my chances for true love to campaign for VP 2018! So why should you vote for me to bring the SPICE2VICE? -I’ve been involved in RMC since the get-go; from hosting the Talent Show/Revue, winning The Voice Magazine’s ‘Best Entry’, to being awarded ‘Most Enthusiastic Fresher’. -I’m all four AF.

in charge of RMC Merch next year, and as you can tell from of me above, I’ll have no problem keeping our college phresh

-A little less rice with the chicken? I’ll be involved in the 2018 food committee. Having eaten a fair few interesting meals in my overseas travels, trust my tastebuds in giving college diversifies meal plan. -Want more? Let’s Dining-Hall and Chill at 6:30pm, 13th of Sep? ;)

Caitlin Gabriel

Sports Representative Sport has always been a big part of my life. From when I was born, I was following Mum, Dad and other family members as they played soccer, netball and cricket. Many of our close family friendships have been formed through sport. As soon as I was able, I took to the sporting field myself and I have never been afraid to give it a crack. I have participated in athletics, swimming, netball, touch football, soccer, waterpolo and probably a few more! Also, I know it’s not considered a sport but I have danced since I was 2, so if you see me doing a nice pirouette (a spin) or a time step (some tap thing) in the middle of the court yard, for me it’s just normal. My life in sport has left me being babysat by the barman at soccer at age 2 so that one of my clean nappies could be used to stop the bleeding of a head wound!! I also gained a spot at fullback in the school soccer team for taking out one of the other students! I am a very competitive person and am not afraid to do whatever necessary to utterly humiliate DLC on the sporting field! When I moved to RMC, the current exec members helped to make this place feel like a home. Their smiling faces made nervous fresher Caitlin feel at ease. I want to be able to do the same for the new freshers next year and make their time here at RMC as amazing as what the current exec have done for me.

Lauren Coppel

Social Representative Name: Lauren Coppel Age: 19 Hometown: Sydney Degree: Bachelor of Marketing & Media Position I’m running for: Social Representative Three random facts about me: • I was in the 2009 Qantas Add • I have the most irrational fear of spiders • I know how to juggle (but please don’t ask me too because I’m not very good) Favourite quote: “Success all depends on the second letter” (It’s cheesy I know!) Why I would like to be social rep: Since I was young, I have always loved anything to do with event planning and organisation which is why I believe I am the right candidate for Social rep 2018. I have had experience through planning my Year 12 formal, my friends 21st and many little events through my leadership positions in year 12. I’m an outgoing person who would be more than willing to contact clubs to get us free drinks or cheaper coffee deals on pub/coffee crawl, I promise I would put my absolute best into planning some LIT harbour cruises in 2018 and of course I would aim to create the classiest ball there possibly could be! If I was lucky enough to be selected as a member of the 2018 exec I would also make sure to encourage inclusivity, community spirit and create exciting events in the hope that next year at college is the best year everyone has/will have!

Jessie Coker

Cultural Representative Vote Jessie Coker for Cultural Representative 2018 About me I was born and bred in the country town of Bathurst but have always loved traveling overseas, I learned French in high school and developed an appreciation for culture. I was on the student executive in year 12. I’m currently on the sports committee. I live for organisation, planners, coloured pens and checklists. I’m also an active RMC event partaker. About what I can do for you Vote for me if you want to see a stronger connection between students. We all have something to bring to the table. I want to celebrate who we are and where we’ve come from.

Caitlin Bell

Sustainability, Volunteering and Fundraising

A little something about me I am currently in my first year at Macquarie University and RMC and am studying a Bachelors of Information Technology. I come from the small town of Peak Hill, NSW (you probably haven’t heard of it so let’s just say Dubbo). I finished my HSC last year and came straight to uni without a gap year. I love tennis, soccer, netball, reading, board games, eating, sleeping and all things nerdy. Why do you want this position? I believe that the role of SVF Rep would give me a chance to give back to college and ensure that everyone has a positive experience in their time spent here. It would open up opportunities for me to host events to bring people together and get everyone actively involved in the experience that RMC has to offer. What can you bring to this role? I have had a lot of experience as a charity ambassador for Epilepsy Action Australia, The Starlight Children’s Foundation and the Butterfly Foundation. I have organised many community events and fundraisers to promote various charities and love helping out wherever I can. I was elected as Fresher Representative for Sustainability, Volunteering and Fundraising at the beginning of this year and would be thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to expand on all the good work that Pip and my fellow SVF committee members have done throughout the year. Thank You

Stephanie Suen

Jen Good

Community, Communication & Marketing ‘I promise I’ll keep this short and sweet, my name is Jennifer Good and I think I’d be a… good choice for CCM. RMC has an amazing community with so many opportunities. I would love to experience everything that it offers. In this role, I would ensure that everyone is kept up to date and encourage everyone to have a go. I would bring lots of fun and creativity to this role. I really enjoy meeting everyone and love organising little events. Thank you so much for considering me!’
