O-Week Overview issue Welcome to the second edition of The Voice for 2018! This edition is covering O-Week and the huge number of events that occurred! Although O-Week is finished, the fun and the events don’t stop there! The RMCSA and RAs organise a huge range of events occurring within each block and within college as a whole! Don’t miss out on these events because we can promise you’ll enjoy them and make many incredible friends! We also wish you good luck on your first week of classes for the year!

Zoe & Jen

O-Week

This year’s O-Week introduction to college was

filled with a fantastic range of memorable events

to welcome the new batch of Freshers to RMC. With some crazy hait cuts and camo shirts the new RMC

freshers dove into O-Week with enthusiasm and zest. The week started out with the fresher fiesta and ended on a high note with the Tour de Mac and Closing Ceremony.

Among the many successful events was the Welcome

Service held by TCM, lots of people went along to the church and enjoyed a night of meeting everyone.

From Scav Hunt to the Pub Crawl the week was filled with energy and smiles.

With impressive outfits, impressive hair cuts and

impressive attitudes the freshers managed to survive the week with the help of returning RMC residents

who shared their experience and words of wisdom.

The fresher flu, missing home, getting involved, the fresher five, new friends, the Trinity Chapel and other college commonalities! Congratulations on surviving the first week of college! But don’t

forget that the fresher flu is still

out there and with everyone tired

from such a jam packed week it is

spreading. So, make sure you keep yourself well rested and drink lots

of water. There have already been a few people around with husky

voices and coughs, so make sure to take some vitamin C and keep cold and flu medicine handy!

Just because O-Week is finished doesn’t

mean that you still can’t get involved. The RA’s will have block events and there are

some exciting sport events coming up too! Commencement dinner is right

around the corner so remember

to dress up (semi-formal) for this event and enjoy the yummy food! Also don’t forget to RSVP on the RMC app if you’re a returner.

Another commonality at college is missing home which can be difficult to deal with.

A way to combat this is to make sure you decorate your room to make it feel more like home! You can always come and pat the college pets too (Sable will love you more if you give her food).

The fresher five is also still out there

especially with a staple food of chicken

and rice and the convenience of the Mac

Centre. To beat this, take advantage of the free gym membership!

If you’re missing attending your

church services at home then don’t forget we have a fantastic team

of Chaplains right here at college!

Both Dan and Tim are always up for a chat and are happy to help you

get involved with the Trinity Chapel (TCM). Even if you missed their

Welcome Service in O-Week they

are always happy to welcome new comers to the church.

The Fresher Fiesta On Sunday night as the beginning of O-Week the Fresher Fiesta was held in the common room with games and food! A huge number of freshers turned up and many many new friends were made - even if no one could remember any names the next day! From fresher bingo to Kahoot quizzes about the exec members, everyone enjoyed the activities with Joann winning the Kahoot round and Amy winning the fresher bingo.

Outdoor Movie Night The Outdoor Movie Night was a popular event held at the Outdoor O-Week Cinema in North Sydney. With an abundance of snacks and picnic blankets the RMC residents travelled out there to enjoy the iconic movie ‘Dirty Dancing’. According to the movie goers the night was lots of fun and the movie was enjoyable!

Pg. 5

After the Vice

Chancellor’s Welcome Speech, a pool party was much needed!

Pool Party

Scav Hunt

As a yearly O-Week event, the Scavenger

Hunt began with an eventful early morning train ride and ended with a run through China Town.

8 teams competed for the honour of winning and to be remembered as the winning Scav Hunt team for 2018.

A big congradulations to all the teams

involved - the feat of completing the Scav Hunt is an amazing one!

Pg. 7

Fresher Cuts The fresher cut is an iconic tradition here

at college and produces a dramatic array of

hairstyles. Both girls and guys were involved in this year’s haircut session and the results

were very impressive! Here’s just some of the many cuts!

Pg. 11

Coffee crawl was extremely popular this year, lots of hot and cold drinks were consumed, along with an interesting mango dessert and some flower gelato too.

Coffee Crawl

Pg. 12

The pub crawl began with a trip to Star Bar where everyone socialised and some even managed to start their own dance floor. The night continued at The Three Wise Monkeys where many shots were ingested and some of the coffee crawl participants joined us. To finish the night everyone danced away at Side Bar before being chauffeured home on the buses.

Pub Crawl

With a theme of “dream team” this year’s harbour cruise

proved to be an incredible show of group outfits with some including Mario kart, Snow

White and the seven dwarfs, the literal dream team, teletubbies,

primary colours and care bears! Everyone had a great time and

no one fell overboard so overall

the Harbour Cruise was an event not to be missed!

Harbour Cruise

Pg. 14

Outfits ranged from Bachelorette contestants, to

Aladdin and Jasmine, to Donald Trump and even John Petho and his maintenance crew!

RMC vs. DLC Dance Off

The RMC vs. DLC Danceoff is a annual tradition and the first of the yearly competitions between RMC and DLC that continue throughout the year. As it stands RMC had previously won the last three consecutive years

of the danceoff (2015, 2016 and 2017) after a seven

year losing streak and has redeemed their dancing and choreography skills!

The dance was filled with many slut drops and a mexican wave windmill choreographed to the song ‘24K Magic’

by Bruno Mars performed to perfection by the group of RMC residents.

So a big congradulations has to be made to this year’s

Exec and the freshers who put on an amazing dance and managed to beat DLC for a fourth year in a row!! Lets continue our winning streak for years to come!

Pg. 17

Tour de Mac From fruit bobbing at X5B, to can roulette and eating raw eggs,

this year’s Tour de Mac was as

intense as ever! Congratulations

to everyone who participated and made it through the tour, it’s a

tough challenge and takes a lot of energy after a long O-Week!

Pg. 19

With O-Week coming to

an end, the awards night concluded the activities

by showing appreciation

to the select few freshers

that stood out during the week.

The fresher awards for 2018 went to some

awesome freshers with the ultimate survivor

award going to Carly Donohue.

The winning Scav Hunt

Group was led by Rachel, Tami, Jen, Alex and Jonty.

The winning Tour de Mac group was led by the

amazing leadership of

Jack and Zoe and was full of enthusiastic freshers!

Congratulations to all the freshers and everyone who won awards, it’s

been a fantastic O-Week!

INTERVIEW WITH THE ULTIMATE SURVIVOR/FRESHER 2018

CARLY DONOHUE

How does it feel to be one of our only female ultimate survivor/freshers? It feels good to encourage everyone,

no matter girl or boy, to be involved, competitive, and have fun!

won’t forget eating a raw egg. Or a raw fish.

What are you studying at uni this year? And what year are you in? I’m in the second semester of my third year. I’m taking a few classes for my

Health Science major as well as an art and Australian Politics class.

Are you looking forward to the rest of the year at RMC? I’m super excited about the rest of my time at RMC and looking forward to

continuing doing stuff with new friends. What was your favourite ultimate survivor challenge? My favorite challenge was eating dinner at

DLC because it was the first challenge I did and got to do it with some friends!

Was there any challenges you were disappointed you missed out on? I really tried to get Pat McCoy to shave and didn’t get a selfie with a bouncer at ranch.

Also do a shoey because I’m in Australia so I feel like it’s a rite of passage.

What was your favourite part of O-Week? Tour de Mac was super fun...I probably

Did you have any tactics when attempting to be ultimate fresher? I fell into the ultimate fresher competition

sort of accidentally and when I figured out

I could win if I tried to keep it very low key so other people wouldn’t start trying too hard.

Did you feel there was some serious competition from other freshers competing to be the ultimate survivor? Bill’s attempt was cute. Are you going to frame your certificate and display it to the world with pride? Of course !

city in our country. So of course, you guessed it, I’m from Newcastle. Does it differ a lot to Sydney/ Australia? Even though it’s only two hours

north, Newcastle has a completely

most importantly, less touristic and quieter.

What is your favourite college memory?

What is the best way to get involved with the college life?

And lastly, tell us an interesting fact about yourself

favourite part of your degree? I study a Bachelor of Archaeology,

majoring in Geology and Environmental

Earth Science. I love that a lot of learning in my degree isn’t presented in lectures and tutorials but through fieldtrips. I

also I get to travel with my degree, since

both rocks and ancient remains are pretty global. This semester I’m travelling to

several places on the East coast, like Seal

I’ve inherited the Instagram page

‘chickenandroice’, which brings the good news of RMC’s dining hall to the world

wide web. I think everyone deserves to

see RMC’s chicken and rice dinners, and think ‘damn, that’s some good chicken

and rice.’ So, if you want to get into the spirit of the college, go follow the page and throw out some likes.

Rocks, and also overseas to Croatia for

an archaeological excavation. While most of my friends make fun of my degree

for being a dirt and rock lover, I get to

be outside and travel, so who’s the real winner?

What is your favourite RMC meal? If anyone tells you that chicken and rice

isn’t their favourite meal at RMC, they’re probably lying. Some nights the chicken may not be the tastiest, and the rice

might be soggy and crunchy at the same

hometown is welcoming too. What is the best way to get involved with the college life? Eat in the dining hall and participating

as many events as possible. Join in the student exec, be block captain.

What is your best piece of advice for the freshers? Get involved in college events and make

some friends. Travel around Australia. And make friends with Wang!

What do you study? And what is your favourite part of your degree?

Human #2 WANG YUE What is your favourite college memory? Annual ball party, art’s week international night and many other events.

How long have you been at college? Three years by April Where are you from? Does it differ a lot to Sydney/Australia?

I study bachelor of Applied Finance and Professional Accounting.

I like numbers of accounting. I’m not good at finance.

What is your favourite RMC meal? Beef Lasagne and chicken. Something interesting fact about you (eg how many languages you know etc) I have lived in Kenya for five years. I can speak a bit of Swahili.

I’m from a small town with 1.93 million

people in China. Apart from the language and food, it is similar to Sydney as my
