Touch Footy Sunday the 11th of September saw Menzies take their chances at Touch Footy. Once again all who took to the field are to be congratulated. Results As per usual there was no shock when the Village did a no show for both categories. Automatic win am I right???? Unfortunately, the boys, although they played an awesome game, lost to DLC. Big congratulations is given to the girls for winning against DLC!!! What’s Next Keep an eye out for Basketball!

LGBTea The first ever LGBTIQ+ centered RMC event, and it was a success. The RMCSA organized an open forum where residents could ask questions and learn more about the community. This event was also a great way to have a conversation about how the student association and the college can better help and accommodate the community, so kudos to the exec for listening. The timing could not be more perfect, with the marriage equality survey happening right now, educating oneself about the issues that face the community is important. Here’s to the next event, with many more teas to be consumed.

Austen-Crazy Festival Festival.. I’m not sure what you imagine when you hear the word. Music festivals, perhaps – and there are plenty of those coming up soon! Or the Sydney Film Festival that was on a couple of months ago. Or even Macquarie University’s own Re:Conception festival that happened back in September. I’m guessing that Jane Austen is not the first thing that comes to mind. So let me enlighten you! Each year, around Easter, Canberra hosts the Jane Austen Festival, a four-day Regency-style extravaganza (which is nothing compared with the 10 day festival in Bath, UK, each year). Austen fanatics from all over the country come to dress up, learn dance moves, sew bonnets, and drink tea. There’s a ball, a promenade through the streets of Canberra (dressed up, of course), and plenty of time to pretend the modern world doesn’t exist. It’s cosplay for Austen crazies, basically. It’s not my style of Austen-crazy. I prefer to read her books and develop new ways of understanding and interpreting them, rather than trying to recreate them in my own life. But hey, each to their own, right? And it’s great that Austen gets her own festival. She is, after all, one of the most significant novelists of all time. Don’t believe me? She just got put on the British £10 note. That doesn’t happen to just anyone. And she has more TV and movie adaptations of her novels – even though there are only six of them to start with – than any other author, including Shakespeare (and another new Pride and Prejudice adaptation has just been announced!). She’s one of the few authors who are loved both by academics within university departments, and by regular readers who ask only for entertainment in their reading. Austen isn’t for everyone. But if you’ve never read one of her novels, maybe add that to your summer holiday list. You might be surprised by how much you enjoy it. And perhaps you too will one day find yourself promenading through the streets of Canberra in Regency garb. Or perhaps not. Katrina Clifford

Top Tips Toward Staying on Track Stick to a schedule:

chances are you are not going to be very motivated in this last stretch of the semester. The summer holidays (aka three months off!!!) are calling your name and let’s be honest- we just want the next couple of months to be over. The key to staying on track is sticking to a schedule. Don’t start skipping class now, keep getting the grades you deserve, work work work work. Those three months will feel better knowing you’ll be expecting good results!

Plan a break for the Uni holidays:

this will give you great motivation and also a way to stay at home more to save for it!

Stay on top of readings: Nothing worse than having to go back and do all

those boring readings you thought you could forget about. Read them now so you don’t have to play catch up on all of them at once.

Start study notes NOW: nothing to say on this other than START NOW (if you haven’t already).

Keep going Menzies, you are almost done!

The fastest ever snackcenter ‘run’ It’s 9:20pm. You’re sitting in the TV room with your friends and about to start watching a movie. You look around. Something is wrong. Everyone has snacks except you. Your stomach growls and you think to yourself “I knew I should’ve let the kitchen give me 3 scoops of rice for dinner”. You ask your friends if anyone wants to go to snackcenter. They refuse. The movie is starting in 10mins. Things aren’t looking good. You assess your options… You succumb to the latter but you only have 10mins. What do you do? We all know about a snackcenter ‘run’ but what about literally running there/back? It felt like all my training had led me to this moment. Standing outside the C/D-block gate I hit start on my watch and I’m off. Tick tick…1min 10sec and I reach Max Brenner only to be stared at by the staff who are probably wondering why this crazy guy in jeans is running through snackcenter at night. Tick tick…2min 05 sec I hit Woolworths. Sweating and out of breath I run down the biscuit aisle. Grab 2 packets of Oreos and bolt to the self-serve checkouts (I don’t have time to be asked “how’s your day been?” by the checkout chick!!). Tick tick…3mins down and the oreos scanned. It’s time to pay and we all know paypass is fastest (who even uses cash these days??) but it’s taking ages to process. I leave before it finishes, never knowing if I actually paid for it or not. Back up the escalator skipping 2 at a time. Stare back at the Max Brenner staff on the way past. Tick tick…4min 20 sec down. Is a sub 5min snackcenter run possible?? The traffic lights start switching from green to red. All hope looks lost. I make a sprint for it. A bus is coming the other way. It’s do or die. I put on the gas and make it just before a bus comes flying past. Phew that was close!! Tick tick…4min 30 sec. Breathing hard I race across the grass and hit the pedestrian crossing. Tick tick…4min 55 sec. I give it my all to the C/D-Block gate and hit stop on my watch. Out of breath, hands on knees and quads like jelly I look at my watch. 5min 8sec. Quick but not quick enough. The chase for the sub 5min snackcenter run continues. The challenge is on. Can you beat it? Keelan Birch

Movie Reviews ‘IT’

There’s something going on in the small town of Derry, Maine that no one dares talk about, and it’s up to a group of ‘loser’ kids to figure it all out. This is part one of the two part remake of the original 1990’s ‘It’ based on the best selling novel by Stephen King. Announced to be the highest-grossing horror film to ever be made, It is a must-see this spring, especially with Finn Wolfhard, the Stranger Things star, cracking a joke every five minutes. 

‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’

Manners Maketh Man, do you know what that means? It means you need to grab $10, your cinebuzz card and go to the cinema, because our favourite agents from the Kingsman tailor shop in London are back. Except this time they have partnered up with their American cousins, the Statesmen, to fight a new evil that threatens the lives of many. This is one action packed movie you don’t want to miss, just beware of some lighthearted cannibalism. 

‘Flatliners’

Five medical students explore the after life and its secrets, what they find is beyond their expectations. This Sci-Fi Drama takes us on an emotional rollercoaster, as we see the characters struggle with the mistakes of their past and the fear of the demons that have come to haunt them. A well directed film, with a well streamlined story, made better with amazing acting, definitely worth watching, but don’t fill up on soft drink, you might regret it.     

When asked to write this short passage I freaked out because it seems there are two ways this can go down. Either I write a short sweet story about my upbringing to justify my strange mannerisms or a comedy act ridiculing the adventures of my past. But then I realised, we’re here for education.

Humans

So without further ado, let me adhere to the college’s mission and enlighten you all with a life hack. The day I hacked my life was the day I discovered MEMO. Minimum Effort, Maximum Output. Being MEMO is not something you necessarily do, but an attitude, or a mindset that you act upon in the face of any decision. For example, when someone points fingers and laughs at you for driving to the gym you can giggle back at them because you have the upper hand in life. You have MEMO. What they don’t know is that you’re going to be done with your workout faster and get back to study before your enemies whilst they try and convince themselves that walking an extra kilometre will make them fitter. The real workout is at the gym. I want you all to disregard the idea that ‘better’ is the enemy of ‘good enough’. ‘Good enough’ is not only a goal, but a choice when you live by MEMO. Truth be told, when I received my ATAR I was infuriated. I achieved exactly 0.05 above my goal – 0.05 points of wasted effort. I engaged in manly weeping at the thought of the games of ping pong that were forgone because of the wasted effort I put into that additional 0.05. I could have achieved my goal, hit the bullseye, but I lost sight of what I valued dearly and studied too hard. Jesus once said, “the truth will set you free”. What Jesus forgot to say was that the truth is MEMO. I want you all to manage your time and minimise the effort you put into your own lives to achieve your own maximum output. If you found this passage helpful, feel free to make direct eye contact with Thomas Bunting upon your next encounter and thank him for showing you the light. You’re welcome. Thomas Bunting

of RMC When people describe me they usually say I’m a chill surfer dude. I’ve moved around for most of my life, living from country to country with my family, weirdly always near the coast. I’ve lived in such places as Sweden, Vietnam just to name a few. Because of these coastal places I took up surfing at a young age. I started in Sweden trying to learn to surf through the icy water but I eventually caught my first tunnel. After hopping around the world visiting different surf spots I ended up in Queensland Australia where the water is warm and the sand is soft. I really hit my stride here becoming better and better. Soon I started to enter tournaments and of course I won all of them. Now I must tackle the fearsome waves of the Tasman strait. Which if all goes well, i’ll attempt on December 5th. So, I guess, wish me luck. :)
