‘What’s been going on in S conference on Tuesday nights??’ Great question! At the beginning of the semester, the Chaplaincy team launched Crossroads: a group for anyone interested in God, life, spirituality, community, or even anyone who is just looking for snacks, and somewhere to be on a Tuesday night. No matter where you’re at in thinking about Christianity, from never thought about it to been thinking about it for years, you’ll probably find someone else thinking about the same things at Crossroads. So far we’ve played some fun games including building towers from dry spaghetti, and heard some great uni life hacks! Bill told us where to go and get out into nature, and Sara taught us how to budget and manage our finances - my personal favourite! But more than that we’ve also been hearing and chatting about what the bible says on a bunch of interesting life issues like adulting, work, and relationships. Personally, I’ve loved getting to know some people a bit better and hearing their thoughts and questions. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be hearing even more life hacks, eating more snacks, and diving into topics on mental health, discipline, and faith. This really is a group where anyone is welcome, so we’d love to see you there! Feel free to just come along, and see what you think of it. If you want to know more just grab any of the chaplaincy RAs, Dan or Lily. - Bridonie

Crossroads

We’re always thinking of new ways to improve college life here at RMC – different college events, block activities, learning programs, and ways to build community. One thing we’re starting up this year is the RMC Leadership Certificate, a new program that we’re running for our residents to help them grow and develop during their time at RMC. The motto of RMC is ‘Forming the Person, Transforming our World’. We believe that people can and do change the world, and we want to make sure that everyone’s college experience is one that shapes them into a person who can change the world for the better. We want to send out our residents at the end of their time here equipped to meet the challenges of life post-college, both in the workplace and in the communities you will go on to establish and join. And so, the Leadership Certificate! Its focus is on personal formation in four areas: spiritual, vocational, ethical and resilience. Residents enrolled in the certificate will participate in workshops and courses (some compulsory, others optional), volunteer with local organisations, serve in different roles within college, and undertake various experiences to help them grow in these four areas. They will also practice different forms of reflection – writing, meeting with a mentor, going on retreats, being part of small discussion groups – so that they are growing deliberately and with intentionality. If you’re just starting college this year and planning to be here for three or four years, you’ll be able to complete the Leadership Certificate easily during your time here by setting aside a couple of hours a week. If you’re a returner but still interested, drop by to see Katrina to talk through how we can arrange credit for things you’ve already done during your time in college. Interested in signing up? Get in touch with Katrina at katrina.clifford@rmc.nsw.edu.au, or drop by her office (outside the dining room, the one with the cookies) for a chat.

Is Counselling for Everybody?

THe voice . Volume 2 2020

Wise words from meredith

YES!! Be absolutely sure that just about everyone can benefit from seeing a counsellor. And it’s not just for when crisis strikes. It can make a huge difference to your College and Uni experience to make positive changes now, to prevent things spiralling out of control later, or to address pre-existing concerns. Seeing our counsellor, Meredith, is FREE to RMC students and staff. You can expect: • A warm and friendly approach in comfortable, private surrounds at RMC. • A safe, non judgemental, and confidential space in which to talk about your concerns, and receive support in helping you decide what you need. • Respect for you, your values and beliefs, identity, and background. • To work as a team with Meredith to develop a ‘plan of attack’ to address where you might be ‘stuck’ and how to move forward. • Help in a crisis, or over the longer term. • Sessions to last usually around 50 minutes (but you’re also welcome to drop in if the door is open). You can talk about anything. Nothing is too big, small, embarrassing, or weird. Meredith helps people with a wide range of concerns including: Stress, depression, anxiety, homesickness, transitions, identity, procrastination, time management, self care, trauma, relationships, substance use, suicidal thoughts/ self-harm, porn, faith. About Meredith: Having lived on campus herself as a uni student, and as a parent of uni students, Meredith has some insight into the challenges of College life. With a Masters of Counselling and ongoing professional development and experience, she supports young adults to enhance their personal and academic effectiveness, and enables them to reach their potential for living rich and meaningful lives now and in the future. She is available on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am - 6pm in Room 103, (next to Study 101) for confidential drop-in chats or appointments. Email: Meredith.wagstaff@rmc.edu.nsw.au

ROOM INSPIRATION

This week, we were lucky enough to get a glance into two of the most aesthetic rooms at RMC! Over the past few years Grace and Bec have honed their room decorating abilities - and are willing to share two of their favourite tips to improving your rooms! “If your room doesn’t get much sunlight, use fairy lights to always keep your room nice and bright” - Grace “A small pot plant is one of the best ways to personalize your room! If anything it will act as a great friend when you’re lonely” - Bec

Keeping up with RMC

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (available on netflix)- Beth W Hmm where to start? If you haven’t watched this TV show yet, I recommend you get up from wherever you’re sitting reading this and go watch it on Netflix. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed unless you don’t like Will Smith, and, well, that’s just unfortunate. This TV show sees Will Smith make his debut as himself, acting as a boy from the streets whose mum sends him to live with his rich Aunty and Uncle and three cousins. The episodes follow his journey of ups and downs and hilarious moments with his family. This comedy is just what everyone needs right now to be entertained and have a laugh. So I’ll leave you with some humble words from Will Smith: Girl: “Excuse me, what’s a nine-letter word for Terrific?” Will: “That’s easy: Will Smith.” For more of his antics go watch Fresh Prince of Bel-Air! The IT Crowd (available on Netflix) - Jono H If you’re looking for a brilliant British binge, this is the show for you! The short and sweet length of the show lends itself perfectly to an afternoon away from studying, or a quick watch with a friend. For me, The IT Crowd has to be the quintessential sharp British comedy and is easily one of my all time favourtie shows! Moss: “I came here to drink milk and kick ass... and I’ve just finished my milk.”

'Done and Dusted'

An extract from

…The fight had begun as a revolution of spirit, but soon the Mers were fighting for their lives. Whilst they did outnumber their enemy, they did not possess any kind of magic unlike these god-like beings. A flash of light. A clash of swords. The screams of the wounded and the damned. Every noise merging together, building, and growing like an entity of its own. Finally, the room fell silent. Only two people left standing: Caritas, the last Council Member and representative of the Eros region; Nebas, the last of the revolutionaries. They gazed at each other for what seemed like an eternity. Both were breathing heavily and still reeling from their injuries. “Stop. This. Please” Caritas begged. “The region’s powers need to stay united.” “I know” Nebas stated arrogantly. “I also know that you can be left alive with no authority and without anybody having knowledge of it.” “If you let me live, I will remain in hiding,” she begged, but he did not react. “I will help you rule over the Donatus?” He reacted, “I let you live, and you become my secret agent and help me control your disgusting race?” he asked smugly to clarify… Where did you find inspiration for your book? • I’ve always had the urge to write a book, but I never had the time until after the HSC. For inspiration I drew on Tolkien and Shakespeare’s Hamlet. What was the publication process like? • The publication process was pretty easy. I just sent it through to Austin Macaulay Publishers in the UK and they accepted it as a joint effort, which means that I had to help with some of the initial costs but I get higher royalties. So last year I paid that off and then communicated with them throughout the period on editing and the cover.

So recently we had a great A Block get-together, it was great to make fun of Brian as he tried to barbeque some snags. But what was even more fun was getting to know the other awesome A Block Amazonians, celebrating another great win after Block Wars! But watching Brian lose at Dutch Blitz was equally as entertaining.... - Caleb

E Block event The E-block event was a blast! We played all sorts of games and there were many laughs. It was lovely to see some new faces but also reconnect with people I hadn’t seen in a while because of different schedules. - Laura
