Dessert Night

Dessert night was a great night to get 2.0 week started. There was a seemingly sloshed crowd as it appeared that many returners had started their week elsewhere with shots - and lots of them. This led to some interesting antics, with Long repetitively prodding his donut, and allegedly some uncalled for commentary by me. Nonetheless, most people seemed to successfully decorate their donuts and subsequently enjoyed their night. - Pat

Poker Night

Henry on the Poker Tournament:

The second annual Robert Menzies Series of Poker saw the greatest Texas hold ‘em action of all time. Between Raman and Jake jousting for domination over their fresher competitors, and new boys Corey and Sam looking confident going in - it was bound to be feisty. Meanwhile, the shady underbelly of the tournament, largely unseen to freshers, was on the minds of returners as the man who started the tournament, Mad Dog Tony Michael, appeared in the finals. The inevitable question was: Did Tony start the tournament to give himself the prize money? Despite this, the boys weren’t given an easy job, thrown into a ‘sticky wicky’ situation with the girls out there to roll a boulder to the boys - led with strong plays by top two Theresa, Annaliese ‘the killer’ Collins, and eventual firstout Georgia Rae. Overall we saw some awesome plays, with Corey taking home the $40 prize, and coveted top spot at the second annual RMC poker tournament.

When asked about the heart stopping plays witnessed at his table, Faisal responded with “yankee with no brim”.

Movie NIght

REVIEWED BY ANNA S On Saturday we were treated to a chill movie night in the dining hall. Blessed with lolly bags, it was the perfect chance for a chill evening with friends. The movie chosen, Pitch Perfect, is a classic favourite and gave us the opportunity to all laugh at the bad puns we knew were coming, and just have a great time! A big thankyou to the Exec who organised it!

A Message from Anna

What a year so far! I am super excited to have a majority of residents back at college again; O Week genuinely feels like forever ago! I just wanted to take this opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to the RA’s, my fellow Exec members, and all the residents who stayed engaged and connected with college online throughout last semester – fingers crossed we don’t have to do it again! I think it is really easy to look at 2020 so far and only see the negatives; which in all honesty, is completely understandable. This year has been tough on everyone for a multitude of reasons, so please make sure you check in on your friends, and be gentle with yourselves as you settle down into your new uni/college routines. Another thank you to everyone who participated in 2.0 Week – your enthusiasm and college spirit did not go unnoticed despite the amount of rules/restrictions we had to adhere to. 2020 really is the year of silver linings. I am super excited to see what the rest of this semester has in store for us, and I hope you all are too. Welcome back!

Upcoming Events

Henry - RMCSA Social Rep

1. Return and Earn is BACK! The environmentally focused scheme by our lovely dandelion Rebecca Moran returns! Remember, don’t drop your panties in a knot into the bins, just recyclable bottles. Have a chat to Bec if you’re unsure about what you are putting in, otherwise she might be throwing you into the Gulag. 2. Pool Competition starts Wednesday 3rd of August. Will Bill finally take home the crown? Or will an underdog emerge as this year’s champ? All I know is that the moistest competition of the year is back at RMC! Make sure to dust off the cues, and get your practice in before the Wednesday start. This is definitely not a tournament you want to miss.

Tik Tok with EG I have heard it all. “Tiktok is cringe”; “Tiktok?! Isn’t that for twelvies!”; “It’s just a bunch of try hard teens that lip-sync and dance awkwardly”. People who think this, to be frank, are simply uncultured and believe they have a PhD in maturity. But fear not, I am here to expose Tiktok for what it really is - a creatively clever, hilarity filled, unlimitedly entertaining platform, that, as the app’s tag line claims, ‘makes your day’. To give a quick rundown to those of you who are completely clueless, Tiktok is a social media app that allows users to upload and share 15-60 second videos of just about anything you can dream of. Pretty simple, right? Well, no. There are ‘sides’ of Tiktok, genres of videos that have a particular theme and usually a similar editing format. My personal favourite sides of Tiktok are: • Hunger Games side - people pretend they’re live streaming themselves competing in the hunger games but are brutally honest about how they would really act in the games. E.g. “Haymitch, if you’re watching this, can you please send me a Chick-Fil-A airdrop? I’m f*cking hungry and sick of eating grass.” • Trading Up side - real time Tiktok series’ where people attempt to trade up from a remarkably simple, cheap item to an extravagant, expensive item. E.g. the Tiktoker who traded up from a bobby pin to a house. • POV Alternate Universe side - videos that are created from your, the viewer’s, point-of-view (POV) that are set in a world that is alternate in some way. E.g. “you live in a world where at the age of 18 the word your soulmate will say to you appears on your wrist”

Keeping up with RMC

So, I’m here to say: unsaddle your high horse, download Tiktok, and get scrolling. See what side of Tiktok you make it too (watch out for the serial killer advice side...it’s scarily right) and find your Tiktok niche...FYI vine never died, there is a vine side of Tiktok.

THe voice . Volume 5 2020

These are just an extremely tiny slice of Tiktok ‘sides’ you could end up on; and I say ‘end up on’ for a reason. The Tiktok algorithm of your ‘for you page’ (FYP = the main stream of videos you scroll through, similar to the Instagram feed) is yet to be figured out by any person on this earth. So, any video you like, comment on, save or send to a friend on the app might (or might not) change your algorithm, and it can change it in the most unrelated ways. Once, I opened Tiktok to find I had made it to the bean side of Tiktok, yes there is a side of Tiktok completely dedicated to videos of beans. I couldn’t even tell you what I did to get there, but the Tiktok gods got me there and so you accept your fate... and now questionable algorithm. But this means your Tiktok is individualistic, completely curated for you and entirely different to any of your friends FYP’s.

Reviewed

In the past two weeks you are more likely to have seen a few of the brightly coloured sombreros littered around the common room than a RMC bucket hat. Despite a nifty design, this is for good reason.

With multiple venues around Sydney, and as a core component of the essential must visit bar list for any member of RMC, many of you will already be aware of the giant margaritas, free jukeboxes, and long nights which can be found within the Tex-Mex walls of El Camino. Bring along a keen group of up to 10 to enjoy the bar’s extra-shot margaritas, and awesome meal deals - with an ample range of beer, wine, and especially tequila being the perfect way to start, or end a busy week of uni. Luckily for us, even with a convenient location, and an over-the-top Tex-Mex atmosphere, El Camino will be sure not to break the bank, with an excellent 4-6pm weekday happy hour, $2 Taco Tuesdays, and 10c Wing Wednesdays. If we have not convinced you to check it out, here is what a few loyal patrons have to say about El Camino: Pat: One word - TEQUILA. But in all honesty it’s probably as good as it gets with no clubbing. Bea: El Camino is great because it is a vibrant environment where we can live for the nights that we can’t remember with the people we won’t forget. Jim: Its great because you can’t chug your drink and finish it in one go, you have to enjoy it. Jess: The mango margarita or a white wine are my pick of drinks. Also the tacos are a must. NSW Locations: The Rocks, Manly, Moore Park, Miranda

Lex: The girls in Top A are pretty cheap. Tully: I am here to do crime.

Arjuna: Honey is an aphrodisiac. Tom: That would explain a lot.
