Why Robert Gordon University
Robert Gordon University is one of the UK’s ‘new universities’, created in 1992. However it can trace its roots to 1731, when Robert Gordon bequeathed his estate to build a residential school for boys. In 1903, The Robert Gordon’s Technical College was formed to bring together a range of adult education activities in Aberdeen. It was redesignated The Robert Gordon’s Institute of Technology in 1965 and was awarded university status in 1992. Robert Gordon University is renowned for its vocational focus and has one of the strongest graduate employment records of any UK university. Robert Gordon University has been named, for the third year running, by The Times Good University Guide as Best Modern University in the UK and was also voted Scottish University of the Year by the Sunday Times in 2011. The university has three Faculties: Aberdeen Business School, The Faculty of Design and Technology and the Faculty of Health and Social Care.
Aberdeen Business School recently had its 45th anniversary as a business school and we were very proud to celebrate our high profile with industry supporters and sponsors and to acknowledge the fact that the School was recently ranked 15th of the 118 business schools in the United Kingdom by the Guardian newspaper. We seek to continue to improve our reputation and closeness to industry through both teaching and research. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise indicated that Aberdeen Business School had internationally recognised research in 5 subject areas – business and management, accounting and finance, law, politics and international relations and information management, where we were ranked 2nd for research in the United Kingdom. Facilities The Student Portal The Student Portal is a gateway to information and services for all students. It provides links to CampusMoodle, email, iLink library catalogue and resources, personal files on the University network, help and advice information, exam results, academic regulations, what’s on in Aberdeen, how to update your address, tuition fee and accommodation information - to name a few. CampusMoodle CampusMoodle is a collaborative learning environment for students. Not only will learning material be available online, but there will also be areas for discussion, group work, formative quizzes and the uploading of assignments. You will be able to access your online learning environment anytime and anywhere, as long as an internet connection is available. Microsoft Outlook All communication from the University throughout your studies will be directed to your RGU email account so we do encourage students to check this regularly. You will also benefit from access to our global address list which holds contact details for university staff and student email addresses of others on your course. The Library The Georgina Scott Sutherland library is home to a huge number of books, journals, e-learning materials, DVDs, research and exam papers, all available for our students to use during their studies. The services and resources of the Library are available to all students of the University, including distance-learners, but there are some additional services we offer for students who are enrolled on Distance or blended learning courses and who cannot come in to visit the libraries on campus. Location For those of you who will attend, we are located on the Garthdee campus, on the banks of the River Dee in the south-side of the city. Aberdeen Business School’s setting is both inspiring and contemporary, themes that are reflected in all of our courses delivered at the school. Ten minutes from the city centre, the campus is accessible and inviting. The lush parkland campus on the banks of the river makes it an ideal setting for your studies. Supported Distance Learning With an increasingly dynamic and ever expanding student population, we are proud to offer many of our courses online via our supported distancelearning mode of delivery. We offer full-time and part-time distance learning courses. Our part-time, distance-learning programmes are designed for those of you who are in full time employment, usually, in a relevant profession. Although there are many challenges associated with balancing work and study, there are also a number of benefits to doing so. You will be able to apply real life scenarios from the world of work, to the learning outcomes within your course.
Subject content and learning materials are a blend of online activities with compulsory attendance at monthly Saturday workshops at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, allowing students to work full time without the need for a career break. This provides students with an opportunity to enhance careers through academic study and practical application of the theory. It can also be a great chance to meet like-minded individuals across a number of industries and develop networking opportunities. Learning materials are accessed by students via our virtual learning platform CampusMoodle and then consolidated with discussion/activities in compulsory monthly workshops in Aberdeen where students will work with lecturing staff and other students. Between workshops students will interact with each other and staff by using online discussion forums. Assessments are a combination of closed book examinations and coursework submissions with prescribed dates set in advance. Blended learners also have access to all the online resources and support which is available to distance learners.
Our full-time options are for those who wish to fast-track their studies or who have a little more time to spare, but still want to retain maximum flexibility. As a distance-learning student, you are not required to attend on campus at all, although we are delighted to meet those who do decide to visit. The distance learning mode of delivery has study material divided into learning topics that directly reflect the taught syllabus. A learning, team centred model is used where the online tutor engages with teams and individuals through the discussion forum, group email, virtual tutorial/ chat rooms and confidential email.

Accounting (with CIMA Advanced Diploma) Better qualified equals better prospects Take the opportunity to gain a degree and a professional body award whilst also progressing your career and achieving your personal goals. This innovative course develops a range of appropriate technical and non-technical skills which lay the foundations for a successful career in the increasingly competitive business world. How it works With tuition support at all stages, students study and sit exams for all of the CIMA papers from certificate to management level, leading to the award of the CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting. At the same time various RGU modules are studied and assessed and the combination leads to the award of the BA in Accounting. For students who already hold the CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting – and have at least 6 months of relevant work experience – we offer a top-up option in order to achieve the BA Accounting award. Note: The CIMA Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting is a recognition award given to students who reach the appropriate stage on the path to membership. Course material is delivered through vodcasts, podcasts, interactive tools, business simulation, online reading, presentations and videos – allowing you to study flexibly from home or the office.
Entry Requirements Each application is individually assessed based on previous qualifications and the level of business and management experience. We welcome applications from students who have non-standard qualifications.
How it works There is a compulsory induction weekend in September which will give you the opportunity to meet staff and students and to gain an insight into the topics which you will study. Your learning materials can be accessed by students via our virtual learning platform CampusMoodle and then reinforced by discussion/activities in Saturday monthly workshops at the University. Our Graduate Certificates have been developed as a stepping stone to help you gain access to our Management postgraduate courses if you do not already hold a full undergraduate degree. These courses are the equivalent to the third year of a first degree, and will normally relate to the industry you are currently working in and subsequently support the postgraduate course you would like to complete. Graduate Certificates provide access to a range of postgraduate courses within the department and also stand as a qualification in their own right.

Disability and Dyslexia Support This service supports disabled students to realise their academic potential. It is validated by the Scottish Government to undertake Needs Assessments. We provide advice and practical support to students, applicants and enquirers with disabilities. We support individuals with physical and sensory impairments, health conditions, dyslexia or other specific learning differences, and those with short- or long-term support needs. The service employs a dedicated Enabling Technologist who provides advice and support in the use of assisted and enabling technology, and an Educational Psychologist.
