OVERVIEW Ensuring that the skills set and competencies of healthcare practitioners working in remote environments are at an appropriate standard is a continual challenge for employers and service providers. The changing nature of the workplace as well as the demography and associated health needs of the workforce are placing greater demands on employers. Employers need to be assured that healthcare practitioners providing services to their employees remain safe, effective and current in their practice. RGU’s Faculty of Health and Social Care is addressing this need with a new suite of IRHC Training Assurance Certificated (TrAC) modules. These provide the opportunity for remote healthcare practitioners to enhance their skills by providing education specifically related to clinical assessment, judgement and decision making as well as the immediate care of the deteriorating or critically ill or injured patient. Occupational health and safety and the management of minor injuries and ailments in remote and difficult situations, such as the offshore environment, are further components within the portfolio. MODULE DELIVERY Modules are delivered via blended learning; a mix of face-to-face attendance and online learning fully supported by experienced academic staff. If you are already working as a Remote Health Care Professional, with existing HSE training or qualifications, or other industry related Health and Safety recognition, you can access any of the available modules on a stand-alone basis. For companies and organisations wishing to ensure the competencies of their Remote Healthcare personnel are current and following best practice, delivery can be customised according to business needs and circumstances, with the face-to-face element of a module being delivered in-company. COURSE CONTENT Each of these modules can be studied on a stand-alone basis and attracts academic credit. The credits earned can be used to build towards an academic award in Professional Studies. Clinical Assessment, Judgement and Decision Making in a Remote Healthcare Setting - 30 Credits This module is delivered via blended learning with the clinical examination demonstrations, practice and assessment normally carried out in a simulated sick bay environment on a faceto-face basis. Scenarios considered include: • Psychological and Psychiatric conditions • Acute medical emergencies • Acute surgical emergencies • Management of the unconscious patient • Hypothermia/Hyperthermia • Trauma • Shock The Immediate Care of the Deteriorating/ Critically Ill Patient in Remote Healthcare Settings - 30 Credits Develop your understanding of assessing, monitoring and managing care interventions to stabilise the person, organise secondary/ tertiary care and prepare for safe transfer in an emergency situation. Management of Minor Injuries and Minor Ailments in a Remote Healthcare Setting 15 Credits This module will cover a range of topics from anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology relating to minor injuries and minor ailments to prescribing and professional and legal issues. You will gain the knowledge and skills to make safe, effective and evidence-based in a remote working environment.
Occupational Health and Health Risk Assessment - 30 Credits Develop your knowledge of work, organisations and workplace health and safety and environmental policy. You will develop your understanding of hazards in the workplace and how they are managed within a remote healthcare setting. You will undertake practical occupational health activities relating to hazard monitoring. You will also develop knowledge and understanding of the investigation, recording and reporting of injuries and accidents in remote healthcare settings. Supporting People to Manage their Long Term Conditions - 15 Credits Develop your knowledge of common enduring conditions found in workers (and their families) in a typical remote healthcare environment. Develop your ability to provide comprehensive support to help you monitor and manage their condition and maintain a healthy lifestyle. This module is delivered online. Public Health for the Remote Healthcare Setting - 30 Credits Develop knowledge of public health principles and public health skills for the remote health care setting. Key public health issues such as smoking, obesity, mental health and problematic substance use will be examined. Strategies and skills to promote public health in remote environments will be explored. Work Based Learning in a Remote Healthcare Setting - 15 Credits This work based learning module offers you a tailor-made professional development opportunity to demonstrate and enhance competence to practice in your specialist environment. This is achieved through enabling you to integrate previous/current learning and current experience gained in your role with theoretical underpinnings to achieve academic credits. This module is delivered online.
