Your Guide to Our Heritage OUR MOTTO

WHO IS ROBERT GORDON?

The Robert Gordon University (RGU) motto is ‘OMNI NUNC ARTE MAGISTRA’, which can be interpreted as ‘Make the best of all your abilities’.

Our founder, Robert Gordon was born in 1668 in Aberdeen. He was a merchant trader and philanthropist who amassed his fortune trading from Danzig (Gdansk) in the Baltic. HISTORY GOING BACK 250 YEARS We have a heritage going back to 1729 when Robert Gordon founded a hospital in Aberdeen for boys from poor families. In 1881, the hospital was transformed into a school and learning institution. OUR COAT OF ARMS A coat of arms is a unique heraldic visual design on a shield, surcoat, or tabard. These designs may be inherited, meaning that they pass from a father to his children. Our coat of arms consists of three boars from the arms of the Gordon family and a castle from the arms of the city of Aberdeen. A black wavy band symbolises the rivers Dee and Don and the North Sea oil, and the heraldic symbols in the centre represent technology (a cog), learning (a flaming torch) and commerce (a gold coin).

OUR TARTAN RGU has its own tartan with colours of royal blue, red, and gold. The tartan was designed by Michael King in 1997 and some students choose to wear the tartan as a kilt on their graduation day.

HANDS-ON LEARNING At RGU we use an ‘applied’ teaching approach. As well as passing on to our students the necessary academic and theoretical understanding of their subjects, we try as far as possible to ensure there are practical elements also. These practical elements come in the form of industrial placements, internships, consultancy projects and voluntary opportunities. Whilst 90% of our undergraduate degrees include a professional placement, almost all of our MSc courses will include the opportunity to do an academic or professional consultancy project in the form of a research project or dissertation. This is a great opportunity to develop your subject knowledge and also your professional links. OUR AFFILIATIONS AND PROFESSIONAL LINKS We offer a strong portfolio of high quality courses, working closely with industry and employers at every stage to prepare you for the professional world. On Your Doorstep ABERDEEN AND ABERDEENSHIRE Aberdeen and the historic surrounding county of Aberdeenshire offer access to a huge range of outdoor pursuits. A place that is rich in culture, with a range of museums, art galleries, cinemas and concert venues, Aberdeen is ideal for culture and history enthusiasts. With over 300 castles, stately homes and ruins dotting its landscape, Aberdeenshire is unsurprisingly known as ‘Scotland’s Castle Country.’ There are more castles per acre here than anywhere else in the UK, and you can discover 19 of the most famous and dramatic castles in Aberdeenshire on Scotland’s Castle Trail. For those who are fond of sand dunes and salty air, spectacular sandy beaches and stunning coastlines can be found along the Aberdeenshire coast, making it a mecca for surfers, kayakers, kite boarders and bird-watchers alike. With the Grampian Mountains and Cairngorms National Park right on our doorstep, there are plentiful opportunities for mountain biking, mountain climbing, skiing, snowboarding and white water rafting within easy reach of the city. Aberdeen has its very own snow-sports centre where you can ski and snowboard all year round and The Deeside Way also offers the chance to run, walk or cycle from the centre of Aberdeen to Ballater in the Cairngorms National Park.

Your Aberdeen Set between the rivers Don and Dee in the North-East of Scotland, Aberdeen is a prosperous, cosmopolitan city with an international population. North Hop brings a host of unique events and festivals across Scotland, from craft beer festivals to pop-up gin tea parties, showcasing the best in Scottish drink, food and music.

Speyside’s distilleries, shops, pubs and villages welcome visitors with whisky tastings and tours, great food, ceilidhs and a variety of other entertainment.

GRANITE CITY COMIC CON

ABERDEEN UNIVERSITIES' BOAT RACE In Scotland’s equivalent of the Oxford-Cambridge boat race, RGU goes head-to-head with the University of Aberdeen in the annual 3.5km race along the river Dee.

For all comic enthusiasts, the Granite City Comic Con is a must-see event, featuring special guests, cosplay, retailers and independent publishers.

Friendly rivals RGU and the University of Aberdeen will compete in over 30 different events throughout the city, in the UK’s largest university sporting challenge. 20

JUNE STONEHAVEN MIDSUMMER BEER HAPPENING The popular three-day celebration of craft brewing, along with the best in local food and music, is held in the town’s Baird Park and features over 120 beers on draught.

SPEYFEST This lively festival sees Speyside burst alive with three days of ‘Concerts, Ceilidhs and Stomps’.

NOVEMBER WINTER FESTIVAL A fun-packed programme of festive events that run from early November through to January. Events include fireworks displays, reindeer parade and Christmas light switch on.

SOUND FESTIVAL

AUGUST HIGHLAND GAMES Aberdeen and Shire host a number of iconic Highland Games. The fun-filled events feature games such as the Caber Toss and Tug O’ War.

BRAEMAR GATHERING The world-famous Braemar Gathering is held on the first Saturday in September and is attended by members of the Royal family.

The Sound Festival features concerts in multiple venues across the North East of Scotland, bringing together contemporary, classical, electroacoustic, improvised, experimental and jazz music.

DECEMBER FUN FESTIVITIES Throughout December, the city is buzzing with seasonal activities from pantomimes and carol concerts to festive themed parties at the top student hangouts.

SEPTEMBER FRESHERS’ WEEK This is your chance to celebrate the start of the new academic year. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends through a range of fun activities.

OCTOBER DRACULA AT DRUM The ancient Drum Castle Tower is transformed into a giant cinema screen, to showcase cult classics. Viewers can bring their chairs (or coffins), warm capes and chattering fangs to join in with the spooky fun.

STONEHAVEN FIREBALLS An ancient custom held on Hogmanay, where a procession of 45 participants swing blazing balls of fire above their heads before throwing them into the harbour.

Your Campus, Garthdee Situated on the south side of the city, on the banks of the River Dee, the campus provides a recreational setting for students, staff and the local community. You can walk end-toend through tranquil woodland walkways in approximately 15 minutes. The Garthdee campus started life as home to Gray’s School of Art and the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment. In 1998, its development began with the building of Aberdeen Business School (then known as the Faculty of Management), designed by renowned architect Norman Foster.

The campus continued to grow with the addition of the Health and Social Care Building in 2002 (home to the Schools of Health Sciences, Nursing and Midwifery, and Applied Social Studies) and the £11million sports centre, RGU SPORT, in 2005. Since September 2013, all teaching has been centred at Garthdee and many of the University’s administrative departments and other support facilities are also there, including a nursery and medical practice.

School Officers: In each school, a separate representative is appointed to work with the management of the school. These students embody the partnership agreement by gathering feedback, raising it to higher levels, and then working on enhancement projects and research with the school and Union to make changes.

STUDENT UNION The Studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Union, RGU:UNION, is run by students, for students and is all about making your experience the best it can be. Being a student gives you the opportunity to try any number of exciting new things, such as being part of a sports team or society, taking part in student activities or trips, volunteering, raising money for charity, or simply meeting new people! RGU:UNION also focuses on being the student voice to represent your wants and needs, through our Student Partnership Agreement. There are a number of partnership roles which are available to get involved in including: PARTNERSHIP ROLES Student Representatives: At the heart of student partnership is class representatives, who are elected from each course to share the views of their classmates. International Representatives: The international reps are led by the RGU:Union Vice President (International) and work to raise feedback and undertake projects with the specific aim of improving the experience for international students at RGU. Equality Champions: These representatives work with elected officers at RGU:Union to raise the views and feedback for particular liberation groups such at woman, LGBT+, faith, disability and more. These students sit on Union and University equality communities and ensure that the activities of both organisations provide equal opportunities for all. Presidents and Vice Presidents: These are a number of different elected aid presidents and voluntary Vice Presidents who form the Student Executive Committee. Each student has a different remit they are responsible for from societies, sport, education and more. They work on projects to improve the student experience, run the union and make university better. So, with our full support, we guarantee you a fantastic student experience!

Undergraduate / Bachelors Students with High School Certificate (HSC) only will be considered for entry through our International College, ICRGU.

Postgraduate/ Masters Applicants with a 4-year Bachelor degree from BUET must have a minimum 55% or GPA 2.75/5.0. Applicants with a Bachelor degree of at least two years duration, followed by a Masters degree.

Brunei

Students with the Brunei/Cambridge GCE A level examinations or Brunei Darussalam Technical and Vocational Educational Council (BDTVEC).

Your English Language Requirements and Assistance English language is understandably an important part of studying at RGU. It is the key communication skill you will need whilst undertaking your course here and it also plays an important role in the admissions process and your visa application. EVIDENCE OF ENGLISH All applicants whose first language is not from a recognised English speaking country will be asked to provide evidence of their English language skills as part of their offer to study at RGU. PRE-SESSIONAL ENGLISH PROGRAMME

We also accept a number of country specific English language qualifications as evidence of your English ability. Country specific English qualifications currently accepted are:

At RGU we have summer Pre-Sessional English programmes (PSP) for students who have not reached the required level of English Language needed for their main course.

• West African Senior School Certificate (WAEC) with English at C6 or above

The syllabus combines grammar, writing, reading, communication and listening skills as well as developing your knowledge of UK culture which will enable you to settle into living in the UK a lot more easily.

• Nigerian Examinations Council (NECO) with English at C6 or above • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with English at Grade C or above • Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with English at Grade C6 or above
