About The Roundhouse Roundhouse Vision & Mission In September of 1996 the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood representatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff, undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions: The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECT All of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to find new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASIS The Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, transforming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTION The Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, partnerships, and our own productions.

Volunteer for the fun of it

T

his Spring we are excited to be celebrating Volunteerism here at the Roundhouse. Everyday at the Roundhouse volunteers offer their time, energy and skills which contributes greatly to the success of our programming. From helping with special events, keeping the pottery studio open for drop-ins, keeping Engine 374’s Pavilion open to the public, running free morning Tai Chi classes, and being on the board and other committees, just to list a few. Not only are volunteers a valued part of our team, they are also an important part of our community. They represent all walks of life from professionals, students, youth and retiree’s all spanning a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. During times of tough economic challenges, volunteers offer us immense benefits both on a social and economic level. This spring the Roundhouse will be hosting its first ever volunteer run event, Papergirl. Brought to us by an enthusiastic volunteer, Papergirl aims to involve volunteers in all parts of the planning and execution of the event, as well as extend out to involve members of the community. Papergirl is a world wide art movement with sustainability at it’s core, and run by volunteers globally. Make sure to read up about this event and contact us if you would like to get involved.

Roundhaouse Papergirl Volunteer Alix Buengener, March 1st 2011 Fascinated by cities and street art, Alix explains that ‘although cities are anonymous, by volunteering you can meet the real people that make a city a home.’ With her interest in wanting to volunteer and get connected to her community she joined our volunteer team, and is leading the Papergirl project, along side other volunteers. She believes that at the end of the day when you’re reflecting on what you have accomplished in life, volunteering is something that will always stand out as being something special and meaningful, which can reflect our personal creativity and commitment. We are excited and thankful to have her on our team of amazing volunteers!

As the volunteer Coordinator at the Roundhouse, I feel inspired by all the wonderful volunteers that we get to work with, and am moved by their passion, dedication and energy that volunteers share with our community at the Roundhouse. The opportunities for getting involved as a volunteer, be it at the Roundhouse or with another non-profit group, are endless. If you have ever thought about volunteering I encourage you to follow your heart and go for it! The time is now, the return on your time will be priceless. To quote Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” - Michele Mateus Volunteer Coordinator

Upcoming Events VOLUNTEER AT THE Roundhouse Volunteers at the Roundhouse are an essential part of our thriving community. Without the endless hours of volunteer service offered to the Roundhouse by our community members, we would not be able to do the wonderful work that we do. Volunteers contribute to our programs, special events, board and committees as well as various environmental and cultural events. Currently over 200 volunteers continue to give their time and commitment to the Roundhouse, and these volunteers are as varied as the programs we offer. We are always looking to develop new volunteer positions which support our mandate to be an oasis for recreation and arts and culture expression in the downtown Vancouver area. The contributions that the volunteers make to the Roundhouse allow us to ensure that the centre continues to offer financially accessible and high quality programming to the public.

Roundhouse Artist Residencies

The

Residency program is an important part of our commitment to community cultural development. Professional artists and educators in residence engage for a year or more with the people who come together in and around the Roundhouse every day. Their collaborative projects unfold over time through workshops, drop in programs, discussions, rehearsals and productions. Residency projects are about building creative community; they promote diversity, interdisciplinary activity, innovation collaboration and involvement. In a Roundhouse Residency the process is as important as final product. Residency programs are FREE with membership thanks to funding from the Vancouver Parks Board program but please register.

Roundhouse Community Dancers Now in its 13th year, this dance residency brings together non-professional movers of all ages, working with professional dancers in a wide range of disciplines from classical ballet to hip hop, to clowning and aerial dance. Past instructors have included Tara Cheyenne, Kevin Bergsma, Jai Govinda, Kathryn Ricketts, Barbara Bourget and many others. This spring we welcome Desiree Dunbar, artistic director of Startdance. Desirée Dunbar is a passionate dancer, choreographer and teacher of modern dance. She shares her love of dance with students of all ages and abilities and developed a community dance company in 2000 to provide adult recreational dancers with the opportunity to perform. Desirée considers her choreography to be a collaborative effort between herself and the dancers. A professional dancer in Vancouver for over ten years, she has danced in over twenty new works by acclaimed Canadian choreographers. She has produced over twenty dance performances highlighting the work of community, cultural and professional dance ensembles including her own company Startdance. She is completing an MFA in dance and choreography at the University of Arizona. For more information see page 50

Watch yOUR Step 2.5 Watch yOUR Step 1 and 2 were community public art projects that engaged street involved youth in creating permanent public artworks in downtown Vancouver between 2001 and 2005. Approximately two years after its completion, our mosaic artworks in Cathedral Park made were removed for a BC Hydro substation upgrade and when Cathedral Park was redesigned, only a fraction of the original artwork remained. Through discussions with WyS 2 project participants and partners it was decided that the best way to address this loss was to run another project in which participants from WyS 2 and new participants could come together, working with artist Leah Decter, to create new work for the location to reflect their current ideas, address the upheaval of this series of events, and incorporate aspects of the lost work to recognize the artists. Watch yOUR Step 2.5 will unfold in the spring of 2011. Leah Decter is an interdisciplinary artist now based in Winnipeg.

Roundhouse Artist Residencies Sonic Playground The Roundhouse, in collaboration with Western Front New Music and Coastal Jazz and Blues Society is proud to present the third Sonic Playground at the 2011 International Jazz Festival. Sonic Playground is literally a physical playground of creative sound exploration - an interactive family event that introduces music and sound making in a playful and engaging environment. Various musical practices - percussion, noise making, mixing, active listening, voice recording, rhythm, improvisational performance, sound poetry, conducting - are explored in a supportive, hands-on, immersive space. This year watch for soundscape installations created by Vancouver youth and sound artists Soressa Gardener, Jennifer Schine and Donna Lytle.

Karen Jamieson: Collision

Being part of this project for almost 2 years was incredible. I feel blessed to have been included in the development of Collision; from vision to choreographed performance. All of it was educational and inspiring. Can we do it again, soon? Loretta Hands – participant community dancer Collision is the central metaphor for an evolving dance project with Karen Jamieson Dance – an imaginative collision of professional and community dancers, a dance centre and a community centre, a site specific work and a stage based performance. How fitting that this project should develop at the Roundhouse – a place where many histories, cultures and people and practices meet and engage. The work on Collision began in 2009 with free weekly dance workshops for people of all ages and abilities. The project continues with spring dance workshops that will grow to include input from visual artists, musicians, singers and historians. Workshop participants will collaborate with Karen on ideas for a dance performance based around the theme of collision. This summer the culminating work, site specific to the Roundhouse, will be performed at the Roundhouse July 13 – 17 as part of the Dancing on the Edge Festival. For more information see page 18 & pg 50

Vancouver Draw Down 2011: Summer of Ten Thousand Drawings Vancouver, let’s draw! Challenge your preconceptions about drawing and reconnect with the creative pleasure of making your mark. This summer you’re invited to take part in a series of unique and exciting drawing events taking place across the city. Contribute in person or online to a range of collaborative artworks that accumulate over time. This celebration of drawing will culminate in the Vancouver Draw Down Finale, a day-long city wide celebration of drawing on Saturday, July 23. For more information visit: vancouverdrawdown.com For more information see page 18

Roundhouse Youth Theatre Action Group (RHY-TAG) A Roundhouse Residency for Youth with Theatre Artists: Valerie Methot, Ken Lawson, Chandra Lesmeister, Jeremy Baxter with guest artists Allen Morrison and Devin Mackenzie. Since 2002, this award-winning youth theatre project engages youth with professional theatre artists to develop their knowledge and skills in theatre creation and production. With the mentorship of professional artists, youth participants create a script about ideas and life issues important to them, and see it through a process of development and production, culminating in performances for public audiences. Project partners: Some Assembly Arts Society, Vancouver Coastal Health Past and present supporters: Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, Ministry of Children and Family Development, Watari, Canada Council for the Arts, Vancouver School Board, Kinex, Peernet, Province of British Columbia, Methotical Productions, Vancouver Foundation, and Coal Harbour Community Centre.

Heritage Home and Garden – Traditional Coast Salish Longhouse & Native Plant Garden In celebration of Vancouver’s 125th anniversary, Heritage Home and Garden comments on our collective obsession with Vancouver’s property ‘values’ and our city’s unique history. This installation is an evolving practice in community engagement: the re-creation of a portable Coast Salish Longhouse and native plant garden in the courtyard of the Roundhouse. Coordinated by the False Creek Watershed Society and the Roundhouse, the project will bring together teacher Carver Wes Nahanee of the Squamish Nation as the creator of the structure and Evergreen Canada who will donate plants for the garden. Children of Elsie Roy Primary School and the Squamish Nation will work together to re-create a historical space for community programming, education and celebration. www.roundhouse.ca for more info

Heritage Home and Garden – Traditional Coast Salish Longhouse & Native Plant Garden In celebration of Vancouver’s 125th anniversary, VANCOUVER HERITAGE HOME and GARDEN SHOW comments on our collective obsession with Vancouver’s property ‘values’ and our city’s unique history. Children of Elsie Roy Primary School and the Squamish Nation will work together to re-create a historical space for community programming, education and celebration. www.roundhouse.ca For updated and on-going information on the above projects please visit: http://vancouver.ca/parks/arts/index.htm

Roundhouse Turntable Project

Roundhouse Turntable Plaza Project We are very excited that construction is now under way for the Roundhouse Turntable Plaza. Completion time is anticipated to be around mid-July of this year. The goal of the renovation is to protect, promote, and enhance the existing character and heritage values of the turntable by introducing more contemporary but historically compatible elements to animate the plaza and create a stronger sense of place. The project elements include: • • •

• •

Rotating the turntable slightly to help bring people into the plaza and create a better defined performance space A crane reminiscent of early railway cranes to support a canopy that can be used for shade but also as a basis for performance and celebration A viewing platform overlooking the turntable pit to feature the turning mechanism and to create an opportunity for historical interpretation to tell the story of the historic turntable and the Roundhouse A mist/steam feature for children and families to enjoy reminiscent of the “Age of Steam” Strong, colourful, and playful furniture and trees to make the plaza more appealing as a place for casual use on a regular day basis

Further information on this project can be obtained by stopping in at the Roundhouse or by calling Ernest Fanthorpe, Facility Development Coordinator at 604 257-8458.
