T

he sense of breath flows through different forms of Asian arts, in music, dance, painting, and calligraphy. It is the unifying element between the composers, musicians and media artists in this project. Original, live music rooted in Chinese traditions is performed on a cross-cultural instrumentation, against a backdrop of interactive animated landscape painting. This project incorporates ancient traditions with modern expression, creating an interdisciplinary production that is creative, distinct and culturally reflective.

‌without end A

large Chinese scroll comes alive with layers of animated brush paintings, giving a paranormal view of the famous Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) of China. Music and the visuals are inspired by the ever-changing climates on top of the Yellow Mountain; a fast moving sea of clouds, unusually shaped stones and pine trees, the white waterfalls and green ponds, singing birds and playful monkeys are the characters in this well balanced eco-system. Drawing inspiration from the landscape to express humanity and emotions is an ancient Chinese tradition; seeking representations of human characters in nature to mirror our souls. As in Chinese philosophy, mountain and water constitute all aspects of Nature in two poles - yin and yang. The scroll acts as an instrument enabling the artists and musicians to interact, improvise and co-create the media image, giving a new range of expression and transforming ancient art forms. Dr. Aleksandra Dulic and UBC students create stunning animation, while Kenneth Newby’s original software controls video images and musical signals, visualizing melodic and rhythmic contours. Rich Asian musical traditions meet original compositions and modern video technology as the JUNO nominated Orchid Ensemble performs compositions by Dorothy Chang (Canada), Rui Shi Zhuo (Canada/ China), and Lan Tung (Canada/Taiwan). Musicians: Lan Tung (erhu/Chinese violin & vocals), Yu-chen Wang (zheng/Chinese zither), Jonathan Bernard (percussion) Animation: Rabkine Suen & Oliver Szeleczky Animation Assistants: Nadine Bradshaw, Laura Gourley, Michelle Wilmot Producer: Lan Tung

resented in conjunction with City of Dreams at the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, Counter Mappings is a contemporary art exhibition curated by Caleb Johnston. This exhibition brings together a body of artistic work that disrupts conventional mapping strategies; plays with spatial technologies; restages cultural memory; and envisions new ways of navigating the urban terrain. Counter Mappings features Vancouver artists working in and across the disciplines of sound, animation, photography and installation art. Vancouver’s historical and contemporary landscapes, sounds and embedded narratives are the central subjects of our poetic mappings. L

ondon-based theatre artist Peter Reder and sound designer Tom Wallace collaborate with Urban Crawl and local artists to bring us City of Dreams—an evocative performance piece that explores the interconnections between memory, identity and place. The central image of the work is a poetic map of the City of Vancouver made from hundreds of found objects that are assembled during the performance. This physical construction of the city is mirrored by a soundscape composed of sampled and archived audio materials, from sounds of the street to snatches of song to oral testimonies. This unique creative residency envisions Vancouver’s past and present, its real and imagined realities—a city recreated from shards of memory and myth, hopes and sufferings. “It is unlikely that anyone could experience this beautiful event without being moved in some way.” —ABC Radio, Brisbane Supported by the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre, British Council, BC Arts Council, City of Vancouver, Koerner Foundation and Hamber Foundation.

“Mix snow, ice, enchanted mirrors, and reindeer, add a string quartet and narrator, and the stage is set for a magical retelling of a classic Hans Christian Andersen tale.” —Music & Sound Notes, Banff Centre for Performing Arts

M

usic in the Morning is thrilled to present this hugely successful, award-winning show which will engage the whole family in the magic of music and storytelling. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale of adventure, The Snow Queen blends vivid imagery and movement with the words of the late Canadian composer, Patrick Cardy. This multimedia production of the much-loved winter’s tale features Toronto-based performer, director and producer of theatre, Along Nashman, and one of Canada’s most exciting young ensembles, the Cecilia String Quartet – recent winners of the 2010 Banff International String Quartet Competition. The award-winning Nashman has worked with theatres across Canada and was named Number One Theatre Artist of 2008 by NOW Magazine. The Snow Queen tells a story of friendship through adversity and of a brave journey guided by courage and love. When Kay is lured from his home by the beautiful, cruel Snow Queen, his friend Gerda sets out on an epic journey to rescue him. As she searches, she encounters a series of strangers to whom she relays her plight. Charmed by her story and her innocence, each of them helps Gerda, so that at last she is able to find the Snow Queen’s icy palace. But at the end of her epic journey, will Gerda manage to set Kay free? *Dora Award Nominee for Outstanding Performance and Outstanding Production “The quartet is vital in the storytelling, creating a witch’s scream, a lullaby and a sleigh ride. Its members... also morph into characters from the story; narrator and string players sometimes engage in striking dialogue, one using words and the other musical notes.... The Snow Queen is enchanting family theatre, a classic story retold with a striking theatrical touch.” —Now Magazine

Be Inspired Get Creative Share the Journey

An Exhibition responding to the Vancouver Biennale Public Art Cross-Media Arts by Students of British Columbia

B

IG IDEAS: Responding to Public Art’ is a student creative project, responding to the Vancouver Biennale’s public art installations in our communities. The initiative is a Vancouver Biennale schooloutreach program, designed to inspire cross-media art creations. It also aims to challenge students to use art imaginatively in class, both as a stimulus for artwork and for learning in other curriculum areas. Selected artworks from Grade 10 to 12 students, will be exhibited at the Roundhouse Community Centre, Sunset Community Centre and Vancouver Library Square Gallery from April 18 to 29, 2011.

Join the Vancouver Biennale Facebook to be part of the discussion and share the creative journey of the artists.

The Vancouver Park Board is committed to providing a vibrant public realm for our city’s citizens and visitors. As a Board, we recognize the role of art in that vibrancy and the importance of including the arts as a part of everyday life. http://vancouver.ca/parks/arts/sculpture_biennale.htm

T

he Residency program is an important part of our commitment to community cultural development. Professional artists and educators in residence engage for a year or more with the people who come together in and around the Roundhouse every day. Their collaborative projects unfold over time through workshops, drop in programs, discussions, rehearsals and productions. Residency projects are about building creative community; they promote diversity, interdisciplinary activity, innovation collaboration and involvement. In a Roundhouse Residency the process is as important as final product. Residency programs are FREE with membership thanks to funding from the Vancouver Parks Board program but please register.

adix Theatre winds down its artist-inresidency with one last set of workshop focused on the development of Beautiful Problems, a new production inspired by the 1997 chess match between Garry Kasparov and the IBM computer Deep Blue. Beautiful Problems explores complexity, human error, and the repercussions of war.

Wanna be part of the Problem?

T

here’s still time to get involved. Radix is seeking people from a variety of backgrounds and age groups to participate in the final creation and eventual presentation of Beautiful Problems. Join Radix Artistic Director Andrew Laurenson and other Radix Associate Artists as they refine ideas for a supporting chorus of performers. Some performance experience is helpful but not mandatory. Activities include physical warm-ups, games, improvisations, and scene rehearsals. Learn about ‘devised theatre’ and the making of a contemporary theatre production, to be presented at the Roundhouse May 12 - 21, 2011. Participants are encouraged to be available for each class, and will be given first consideration for casting in the final production.

No knowledge of chess is necessary!

ollision is the central metaphor for an evolving dance project with Karen Jamieson Dance – an imaginative collision of professional and community dancers, a dance centre and a community centre, a site specific work and a stage based performance. How fitting that this project should develop at the Roundhouse – a place where many histories, cultures and people and practices meet and engage.

T

he work on Collision continues this fall and winter with free weekly dance workshops for people of all ages and abilities. Workshops will combine elements of previous Creation and Foundation programs and will include input from visiting artists. Participants will collaborate with Karen on ideas for a dance performance based around the theme of collision. Rehearsal and performance processes grow out of workshops and can involve members of the dance workshops who wish to go further in their creation of this new site specific work. The culminating work will be site specific to the Roundhouse and take place in public spaces all over the Roundhouse in the summer of 2011. The creative process continues.

YOUTH THEATRE RESIDENCY PROJECT

A Roundhouse Residency for Youth with Theatre Artists: Valerie Methot, Ken Lawson, Chandra Lesmeister and Jeremy Baxter

B

egun in spring of 2002, this Youth Theatre residency continues to engage youth with professional theatre artists to develop their knowledge and skills on and off the stage. Youth learn and participate in different aspects of theatre while creating their own scripts and seeing them through to production and performance. Over the years the Roundhouse Youth Theatre Action Group has cultivated many stellar performances, earned the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, and raised funds to help RAWA open an orphanage in Afghanistan. In May 2008, RHY-TAG was awarded the City of Vancouver Youth Award for outstanding contribution to the youth community in Vancouver.

If you you are interested in the project, call for updated information, to be put on a waitlist, or other possibilities for involvement. You must have passion for theatre and are interested and able to commit 100% to the production schedule -- including weekly Thursday workshops/rehearsals, tech rehearsals and all shows -- please leave a message for Valerie Methot with Brenda Racanelli, Arts Programmer, at 604-7131807 or brenda.racanelli@vancouver.ca Here’s what some of the youth have to say about the project: I find the writing process rewarding. Being able to put ideas and issues that I feel are relevant into a play and actually having these ideas acted out on stage is an amazing experience for a youth, especially during an age when many feel their voices are not heard.” This project is a very important part of my life as it is to all the other participants in the group. It is a great way for young people to be able to voice their opinion through great art. Project partners include: Some Assembly. Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre and Vancouver Coastal Health. Supporters include: Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, Ministry of Children and Family Development, Watari, Canada Council for the Arts, Vancouver School Board, Kinex, Methotical Productions, Vancouver Foundation, and Coal Harbour Community Centre.

These programs are FREE thanks to funding from the Vancouver Park Board but please register! Class size is limited.
