ROUNDHOUSE VISION & MISSION

In September of 1996 the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood representatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff, undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions: The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECT

All of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to find new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASIS

The Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, transRoundhouse Community forming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most Arts & Recreation Centre diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling 181 Roundhouse Mews people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be Vancouver, BC V6Z 2W3 better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them. Tel: 604-713-1800 Fax: 604-713-1813 THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTION info@roundhouse.ca The Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do www.roundhouse.ca this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, partHOURS OF nerships, and our own productions.

ROUNDHOUSE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE SOCIETY The Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre is unique as a community centre. Not only

Roundhouse Board President, Craig Giles, and Recreation Programmer, Kathryn Sweetapple, accepting the 2014 award for Best Community Centre.

are we situated in a beautiful piece of Vancouver's history, but we are part of a city-wide initiative to promote arts and culture. The means we serve not only the local community, but the city as a whole. A big thanks goes to you for voting the Roundhouse as the “Best Community Centre” for a fourth year in the Georgia Straight's Best of Vancouver! There was so much to do and see at the Roundhouse this past season. We had a very successful Summer on the Turntable, which will certainly return next year. Our fourth Beerlesque fundraiser was our most successful so far—it was sold out, raised a ton of money to support the Roundhouse, and was one of the best parties of the year! Leading up to Remembrance Day, the Roundhouse participated in the worldwide The World Remembers project. In remembrance of the sacrifice of veterans and to honour the World War I Centenary year, the names of those killed in WWI were digitally displayed at the Engine 374 Pavillion. Coming this winter season, we have some new programs including harp lessons, watercolour painting, How to Draw like an Architect, and The History of Jazz part 1: Ragtime to Swing. The Roundhouse is certainly the place to express yourself. When you come down to the Roundhouse make sure you try out the new red seating in our café where we will be programming this new space with a lot of art and music. I want to thank our volunteers. Volunteers do everything from staffing our 400 special events to teaching tai chi classes, blogging about our community engagement, running the Engine 374 Pavilion, and everything in between. Volunteering is a fun way to participate and set an example of constructive contribution to your community. Sharing your talent and energy with your community is a tenet of Canadian society, and the opportunity is yours for the asking. If you or your friends are interested, please contact the Roundhouse and you will be directed to our Volunteer Coordinator. As well, the Roundhouse is always looking for energetic people to join our Board of Directors. Craig Giles President, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society

Through her “eye-popping” and “thrilling” productions, Deanna explores new ways of engaging audiences, performers and other artists in dance. At a free workshop immediately following the show (open to all ages and abilities), Deanna and collaborating performers will share some of the improvisational structures used in the work. Ruminate is a duet choreographed by Meredith Kalaman, in collaboration with Arash Khakpour. PHILOSOPHERS' CAFÉ: IS CANADA A DIGITALLY INCLUSIVE SOCIETY? (19+)

What does a digitally inclusive society look like? How do factors such as income, social connection, age and gender shape digital inclusion? Governments, education institutions and other utilities are moving their services online. Employers require online job applications. Family and friends are on Facebook and Skype. This means that is more important than ever that people have access to highspeed wireless internet, working computer tools and digital literacy skills. But do all Canadians enjoy this access? What policies are in place to promote inclusion in our emerging digital culture and economy? What more needs to be done?
