Roundhouse Vision & Mission
In September of 1996 the Roundhouse Advisory Committee, composed of neighbourhood representatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and Park Board staff, undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. The following is the result of those discussions: The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. This mission is made up of three key elements:
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECT
All of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to find new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASIS
The Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, transforming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of North America’s densest and most diverse urban sites. The Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.
THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTION
The Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. To do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. These relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, partnerships, and our own productions.

I am pleased to highlight some of our exciting programs. Within this guide you will find a wealth of information on the enjoyable and healthy activities we offer for all age groups. The Roundhouse has celebrated Seniors Week now for ten years. This year, it is a special two-week event focussing on Health and Fitness. Come and join us for Active Arts on June 5, and don’t forget the Annual Seniors Dance on June 8. Take in our very popular Zumba®, now also available for kids! The Family Art program continues to be popular, and so do offerings like Snap Happy Kids, where kids learn to use digital cameras to the fullest extent of technology, and the unique Limited Mobility Yoga, for those who need to improve their mobility. The very first Wide Angle Media (WAM) Festival is coming to Vancouver in March, featuring short and full-length films by filmmakers with disabilities, as well as workshops open to the general public. Evening screenings will be held at the Roundhouse Performance Centre and daytime workshops at the NFB Regional office. In May, join us for the National Youth Art Week, with our partners Creekside Community Centre, Science World and the CULTCH. On May 20, we celebrate the re-opening of the restored and renovated Turntable. The afternoon will include a large public art project on the history of the Roundhouse and a new aerial dance project performed suspended from the crane! The 3rd annual Vancouver Draw Down is a citywide celebration of drawing that will see a wide range of free drawing workshops in community centres, museums, galleries and arts organizations all over Vancouver. We take pride in being the “Best Community Centre in Vancouver.” This has been possible for the past two years because of the tremendous support from our partners, staff, instructors and our patrons. For that we salute you. Have fun and see you around the Roundhouse.

Volunteers
VOLUNTEER AT THE Roundhouse
Volunteers at the Roundhouse are an essential part of our thriving community. Without the endless hours of volunteer service offered to the Roundhouse by our community members, we would not be able to do the wonderful work that we do. Volunteers contribute to our programs, special events, board and committees as well as various environmental and cultural events. Currently over 150 volunteers continue to give their time and commitment to the Roundhouse, and these volunteers are as varied as the programs we offer. From summer day camps to pottery studio volunteers, volunteers play an active role at the Roundhouse, and we truly could not do the work we do without their support. Join Us! Are You: • Over the age of 14? • Comfortable engaging with a diverse group of people? • Interested in arts and culture? • Able to commit up to 6 months of volunteer service • Able to work as part of a team? • Looking to be physically, socially and mentally active? • Ready to have some fun?! If that describes you then we want to hear from you! Contact our Volunteer Coordinator about setting up a time to meet and discuss upcoming volunteer opportunities and how you can get involved in them. For more details please contact our Volunteer Coordinator Michele Mateus at michele.mateus@ vancouver.ca or call her direct line at 604-713-1857. You can also visit www.roundhouse.ca and click Volunteer Opportunities.
Profile: Alina Rakhmanova
Four years ago, Alina Rakhmanova moved to Vancouver from her home country, Turkmenistan; almost immediately, she discovered the Roundhouse. Living nearby, Alina found that volunteering gave her a great opportunity to meet new people and get to know her community. Participating in our various events and helping others has given her a great deal of satisfaction. Alina is studying International Studies at Simon Fraser University, taking on more leadership roles both in school and volunteering. Though it started off being for fun, volunteering also gives her an advantage when looking at master's programs that require community involvement. Volunteering has taught her how to work in groups, as well as developing her communication and leadership skills. Alina always finds time for volunteering, no matter how busy school and life keeps her. Knowing smallest actions can lead to big change keeps her motivated! Her advice to those thinking about volunteering? “Don’t think about it, just do it.”
Profile: Al Lang

Al is someone you call a true Vancouverite. He was born in South Vancouver, at home, in 1929 and went to high school at John Oliver. He spent 34 years teaching for the New Westminster School Board and really enjoys his retirement here in Vancouver and at the Roundhouse. He loves Vancouver and all the exciting things it offers. Al is extremely active in his life doing such things as bowling, seeing the world on cruises and table tennis. Al has been playing table at the Roundhouse for over 8 years and he tirelessly volunteers every Wednesday and Friday morning from 9-12 setting up and taking down tables; taking attendance and assisting the participants with their table tennis skills. We could not run the program so successfully with out him. Al enjoys the fact that there are players from all over the world that come to the Roundhouse to play this highly skilled sport. In August 2012, Al is planning to participate as a table tennis athlete in the BC Seniors Games – Your 55+ Games, in Burnaby. In the past, he has won many medals competing with this sport. If you want more information about the games contact www.bcseniorsgames.org. We as a staff, really appreciate all the efforts Al puts into his volunteering. He loves the Roundhouse, has met many friends here and is always a welcome and cheery sight in the mornings. www.roundhouse.ca 604.713.1800

It is driven by volunteers and brings out the spirit of giving and sharing for everyone involved. BC Seniors BC Seniors Week Week The Roundhouse Community Art & Recreation Centre will be celebrating its tenth
annual BC Seniors Week. This year, two weeks of celebration focus on both recreation and the arts. Join us for our extraordinary recreational programs, the Arts and Health Showcase, an interdisciplinary arts celebration including puppeteering, choral performance and digital storytelling, and the Quirky Cabaret. On June 8, we're holding our tenth annual Dance. This event brings older adults from across the city together in our beautiful and spacious Exhibition/Festival Hall. Buy your tickets sooner rather than later, as the dance sells out quickly. Seniors Week acknowledges and recognizes the diversity of older adults in Vancouver and their hand in building and shaping the province. It gives us a chance to look back on the many contributions our parents and grandparents have made, to say thank you and to highlight what the provincial government has done to meet seniors’ needs. Over the next 20 years, the number of British Columbians over 65 will almost double. That means almost one-in-four of us, around 1.3 million people, will be over 65. Preparing for this demographic shift requires involvement from government, community organizations, businesses and members of the public. Working together with seniors will help provide the framework for supporting older citizens in the future, and we're looking for your input. The Province is committed to the Seniors’ Healthy Living Framework, which supports older people in living healthy, active and independent lives. This reduces the risk of diseases and chronic conditions allowing people to stay in their own homes for as long as possible. Whether going out for a walk or joining exercise and art-based classes, staying active is an integral part of staying fit and being independent. Be a part of history and join us for the many events during Seniors Week 2012 from June 4-15. See page 18 & page 58 for more details.
Seniors Week Opening
June 5, 1-3:30pm Exhibition Hall The Vancouver Park Board presents the opening of a special, extended Seniors Week which runs two weeks. Part 1 focusses on recreation and fitness, presenting a variety of different sports and recreational ideas. Enjoy a gallery highlighting our incredible recreational programs while showcasing the “Walk Your Way into Sport and Physical Activity 2” program. Come celebrate Seniors Week. Light and healthy refreshments will be served.
