Jarvis Church & Ivana Santilli

Friday, November 7, 2014 at 8pm | KH

Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 8 pm | KH

A rare solo performance by Canada’s celebrated troubadour! Over four decades, Cockburn’s humanitarian travels to the far corners of the earth have led to the creation of memorable songs that relate observations about the human experience through his characteristic blend of folk, blues, jazz, and rock. At this concert, we also celebrate the November 4 release of Bruce Cockburn’s new autobiography, Rumours of Glory.

Jarvis Church shot to fame as frontman of The Philosopher Kings, back when he was known as Gerald Eaton. He changed his name and now performs as Jarvis Church. He was instrumental in Nelly Furtado’s rise to international stardom, and continues to write and produce for a wide range of artists, including K’Naan. In this concert, he and his band The Soul Station bring soulful classics, Philosopher Kings hits, and the best of Church’s solo originals to Koerner Hall. Ivana Santilli rode in a Funkmobile with nineties R&B group Bass is Base, but left the Juno-winning band to embark on her solo career. “She occupies a space between Esthero, Goapele, and Corinne Bailey Rae but is still distinctly her Toronto-born self.” (NOW )

Hot Sardines & the Barbra Lica Quintet

Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester

Friday, December 12, 2014 at 8 pm | KH

Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 8pm | KH Sunday, April 12, 2015 at 2 pm | KH Dashing, dapper, and debonair, Max Raabe might have walked straight out of the Golden Age of Berlin in the 1920s. With his elegant poise, suave sophistication, and silky-smooth baritone, he brings to life the songs and style of a bygone age. He meticulously recreates standards as they used to be sung – in formal evening wear, with an orchestra, giving proper credits to the composers – and his deadpan jokes show that Raabe is not only a unique talent but a very funny man.

Take a blustery brass lineup, layer it over a rhythm section led by a Fats Waller-style stride-piano virtuoso, and tie the whole thing together with singer “Miz Elizabeth” Bougerol, a magnetic, one-of-the-boys frontwoman whose voice recalls another era, and you have the Hot Sardines. This NYC outfit, complete with a tap dancer, has been called “consistently electrifying live.” (Popmatters ) Named one of Canada’s Top 5 Female Jazz Singers by CBC Radio 2, Barbra Lica will bring bandmates Reg Schwager, Kevin Turcotte, Lou Pomanti, Mark Rogers, and Mark Kelso with her.

The youngest Associate Artistic Director at The National Jazz Museum in Harlem, a Movado Future Legend award recipient, and a Steinway Performing Artist, Jon’s modern take on the American songbook shines through the channels of a virtuosic pedigree in jazz and classical music.“The dense, spicy stuff that fuels New Orleans: pounding rhythms and lively melodies, deceptively finessed and firmly steeped in gospel and the blues. But the Stay Human ensemble defies the conventions of any era of jazz.” (The Washington Post )

Friday, May 1, 2015 at 8pm | KH “A singer who can conjure rare atmospheres.” (Rolling Stone ) Natalie Merchant’s career Natalie spans three decades. After rising to fame Merchant at the helm of 10,000 Maniacs, Merchant enjoyed even greater success as a solo artist. Her solo debut album, Tigerlily, had chart-toppers like “Jealousy,” “Carnival” and “Wonder.” Ophelia went platinum, and she headlined at Lilith Fair before releasing Motherland. Every Seat Tells a Story SYLVIA’S STORY Jenifer Hosack McDonald’s mother, Sylvia Cockram Hosack, sang her way through life. During the 1940s, Sylvia studied at The Royal Conservatory under the tutelage of Healey Willan, also known as the “Dean of Canadian composers.” After she passed away, Jenifer and her husband, Stephen, decided to make a gift that would allow them to permanently remember her life and acknowledge her love of music by naming four seats in Koerner Hall in her memory.

SEATS 12 – 15 IN ROW C OF KOERNER HALL’S ORCHESTRA LEVEL TELL SYLVIA’S STORY.

MUSIC LOVERS, TAKE YOUR SEAT. Create a lasting tribute to someone whose love of music you wish to honour – a parent, teacher, child or friend, or express your own passion for music by naming a seat or row in Koerner Hall.
