Some may be surprised to know that reggae music actually has deep roots in jazz. Pianist Monty Alexander has been bringing jazz back to reggae music (and vice versa) for decades, and with Harlem-Kingston Express he explores the connections between traditional reggae and straight-ahead jazz, while also forging new ones. Hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, Monty Alexander shot to fame when Sinatra first heard him in a tiny club.

Brooklyn-based Antibalas last appeared in Toronto as the house band in the Broadway musical Fela, the story of their mentor, Nigerian superstar Fela Kuti. Zap Mama is led by Congolese/Belgian artist Marie Daulne, who sings polyphonic and Afro-pop, a harmonic combination of African vocal techniques with urban and hip hop beats.
We kick off the TD Jazz series celebrating big bands with a rare reunion of one of Canada’s greatest – Rob McConnell’s Boss Brass. McConnell’s family has agreed to let The Royal Conservatory assemble 21 of Rob’s long time band members – the all-star line-up includes Guido Basso, Rob Brian Barlow, Terry Clark, and McConnell Lorne Lofsky, conducted by Rick Wilkins and featuring reminiscences by Ted O’Reilly.

Over four decades, Cockburn’s humanitarian travels to the far corners of the earth have led to the creation of memorable songs that relate observations about the human experience through his characteristic blend of folk, blues, jazz, and rock. At this concert, we also celebrate the November 4 release of Bruce Cockburn’s new autobiography, Rumours of Glory.
Jarvis Church shot to fame as frontman of The Philosopher Kings, back when he was known as Gerald Eaton. He changed his name and now performs as Jarvis Church. He was instrumental in Nelly Furtado’s rise to international stardom, and continues to write and produce for a wide range of artists, including K’Naan. In this concert, he and his band The Soul Station bring soulful classics, Philosopher Kings hits, and the best of Church’s solo originals to Koerner Hall. Ivana Santilli rode in a Funkmobile with nineties R&B group Bass is Base, but left the Juno-winning band to embark on her solo career. “She occupies a space between Esthero, Goapele, and Corinne Bailey Rae but is still distinctly her Toronto-born self.” (NOW )

Prelude Recitals Each Royal Conservatory Orchestra concert is preceded by a short performance care of talented students of The Glenn Gould School. Prelude Recitals start at 6:45pm.
Artist Chats Get inside the music as Executive Director of Performing Arts, Mervon Mehta, talks with international artists on stage after intermission. The chats are packed with anecdotes, behind the scenes information, musical insight and inspiration, and more than a few laughs – you never know where the conversation will go!
Public Master Classes Everyone is welcome to listen and learn as international master musicians instruct students of The Glenn Gould School and The Royal Conservatory School in free public master classes. Every Seat Tells a Story SYLVIA’S STORY Jenifer Hosack McDonald’s mother, Sylvia Cockram Hosack, sang her way through life. During the 1940s, Sylvia studied at The Royal Conservatory under the tutelage of Healey Willan, also known as the “Dean of Canadian composers.” After she passed away, Jenifer and her husband, Stephen, decided to make a gift that would allow them to permanently remember her life and acknowledge her love of music by naming four seats in Koerner Hall in her memory.
