LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES PRESIDENT

Dear RCDS Community, As we celebrate the start of 2020, I am reminded of the exceptional moments and signature experiences that take place each year within the walls of our special school. We are pleased to share our stories – made possible by the generosity of our community – through The Rumson Country Day School’s 2018-19 Philanthropy Report. Over 550 parents, grandparents, alumni families, trustees, past trustees, faculty, staff, community partners and volunteers demonstrated their commitment to RCDS last year, ensuring that the Annual Giving Campaign and Parent Council initiatives were overwhelming successes. Your direct support of the Annual Giving Campaign raised $678,000 which helps RCDS offer an education far beyond what tuition dollars alone could provide. The parent community also joined together to provide additional support allowing the school to enhance its playspaces, directly benefiting every child in the school. Thank you for all the generous support. We are grateful to our families for choosing RCDS, our alumni for continuing to exemplify RCDS’s core values, our grandparents for supporting the growth of our students and families in all ways, our faculty and staff for igniting our student’s imaginations, and our parent and trustee volunteers for the countless hours they contribute to provide a signature RCDS experience. In these pages, you will get a sense of how our students excelled in the classroom, explored opportunities in community service, the arts, athletics, and more, and how our teachers nurtured and mentored every child towards becoming global citizens and life-long learners. Thank you for investing in all of RCDS’s strong programs and core values, which will follow our children for a lifetime. Sincerely,

John H. Devlin, Jr. ’83 Board of Trustees President and Parent of Graduates from classes ’15, ’17, ’19, ’22

Valued at $14,640,937 as of June 30, 2019, The Rumson Country Day School’s endowment is an investment in the future that is intended to ensure the school can continue to pursue its mission in perpetuity with palpable momentum and a remarkable trajectory forward. A strong endowment endeavors to provide a permanent source of income and affords RCDS the opportunity to both plan and fulfill strategic, long-term decisions on a solid financial foundation. It is critically important to continue to grow our endowment to fulfill our vision of attracting the best students, providing access for those who would not otherwise be able to attend RCDS, supporting our talented faculty and staff and meeting the needs of our unique programs.

THE IMPACT OF ANNUAL GIVING & “THE GAP” Since RCDS is a relatively small community, as compared to a university or hospital, we have fewer supporters to ask to contribute. This makes every gift we receive from our alumni families, grandparents, parents and staff that much more meaningful and impactful to the school. Your gift to Annual Giving - the school’s most important fundraising priority -- is necessary because each year there is a “Gap” between the cost of tuition and the true cost of an RCDS education. Your contribution to Annual Giving supports every aspect of our students’ lives - from early childhood education through graduation day, to future endeavors.

RCDS CELEBRATES CLASS OF 2019 AND RECOGNIZES STUDENTS WITH AWARDS AT COMMENCEMENT

On Friday, June 14, The Rumson Country Day School Class of 2019 was celebrated at the annual commencement ceremony on the RCDS lawn. This year, thirty-eight students received their diplomas from Head of School Jayne Geiger and Board of Trustees President John Devlin. RCDS prides itself on instilling the character and confidence that eighthgrade commencement speaker Adele Bender exemplified during her speech. The strong educational foundation, the leadership and independence unique to RCDS graduates that Adele mentioned are keys to success in secondary school and beyond. As the ceremony continued, The Class of 2019 was recognized for their achievements with awards. After the presentation of awards and diplomas, the graduates performed the school song, one last time as a class, to close the evening. The Athletic Department Award, given to the athletes in the graduating class who best exemplify the qualities of athleticism, participation, spirit, and sportsmanship, was given to Paige Cecil and Bryce Devlin. The Blake Award, named after Edgar Bond Blake who served The Rumson Country Day School for 40 years, was given to Angie Getze and Julian Magherini to acknowledge their exemplary service to RCDS. The Swede Joseph Chevalier Memorial Award was presented by Swede’s mother to honor Mallory Aronne and her display of kindness and humility towards fellow students, devotion to growth and originality, and perseverance to goals.

6

Board of Trustees member, alumnus and current parent Carl Reiss proudly presented The Theodore K. Reiss Memorial Award in memory of his brother Ted Reiss. The Reiss Memorial Award was given to Grace Gibson who best exemplifies the spirit of good sportsmanship in all phases of school life. Chloe Constantinopoulos was presented with the Highest Scholarship Award, which recognizes the graduate who has attained the highest level of scholarship in the Upper School over the last three years. Julian Magherini was honored as this year’s Second Highest Scholarship Winner. Aidan MacManus received the Trustees Prize which honors the student with the most outstanding qualities of scholarship, sportsmanship, leadership, and character.

RCDS proves an outstanding record of secondary school placement and the Class of 2019 is no exception. We are so proud of our graduates and wish them well at the following secondary schools:

“The students know I have high expectations of them. I wanted to set the bar really high, but they exceeded those expectations. We play games and have fun in class, but the test we prepare for is rigorous.” – Dr. Stephen Gaetano, Latin Teacher

FOURT H GR ADERS EMB ODY LEAD ERS OF T H E AMERIC AN REVOLUTION

“One of our favorite fourth grade activities is the all-encompassing biography project. A culmination of their study of the American Revolution, the project gives students the opportunity to employ research and writing skills while also integrating a technology component. Students perform a brief monologue, dressed as their Revolution leader at a special gathering with parents. That’s when their confidence and public speaking skills really shine through.”

– Erin Campanella, Fourth Grade Teacher

ATHLETICS RCDS CHARITABLE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT IS A SLAM DUNK

“The tournament was a fantastic example of the power of teamwork and community. Not only were our students able to kick off their basketball season with friends from a neighboring school, but they were also able to help those in need. We could not be more proud of the students involved.” – Paul “Campy” Campanella, Athletic Director

GIRLS SOCCER TEAM CROWNED LIBERTY CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS FOR A SECOND YEAR IN A ROW

“The older girls step up as true leaders by guiding the younger players. They want to win, but respecting each other and working together is a priority.” – Sarah Houde, Physical Education Teacher and Soccer Coach

S.T.E.A.M. RCDS’S INTEGRATED STEAM EDUCATION APPROACH PREPARES STUDENTS FOR LIFE

“Getting students involved in each aspect of their learning is paramount. The more freedom they are given to explore various ideas, the more vibrant and meaningful the content becomes. It’s about sparking their curiosity and connecting it with the subject matter, so they can relate it to their own lives.” – Amy Tilmont, Upper School Science Teacher

“We believe that the integration of S.T.E.A.M. and design thinking into our academic program reinforces our tradition of developing critical thinkers and problem solvers prepared for success in secondary school and beyond.” – Jennifer Grolemund, Lower School Science Teacher

“Once you work with a student on a field trip and share the experience, it just adds to your relationship. When you hiked up a mountain, sat in the rain or cold, shared successes, failures, or discoveries together, you learn a great deal about each other. It builds understanding and respect for both student and teacher, and that is key to better learning.” – Tom Scott, Upper School History Teacher

THIRD GRADERS TEST DESIGN ELEMENTS WHEN CHALLENGED TO BUILD A BOAT OUT OF RECYCLED MATERIALS

“Whatever the subject, curriculum or approach, a human bond must come first. I love that time a few months into the fall when I’ve built a real connection with each student so that the class is not just a class, but a community with inside jokes, shared past experiences and a deep understanding of one another’s personalities and preferences.” – Sara Diaz, Third Grade Teacher

EARLY CHILDHOOD TOOLS OF THE MIND PROGRAM SPECIAL GUESTS VISIT EARLY CHILDHOOD STUDENTS TO ENHANCE “TOOLS OF MIND” PROGRAM

“Play is the central teaching tool of the Tools of the Mind Curriculum which focuses on giving children the mental tools they need to develop academic and self-regulation skills. Each week is centered around a different theme like community, hospital, veterinarian, grocery store, camping or discovery. The children choose a role, make a plan and write it out using the Scaffold Writing approach. This allows teachers to assess and support emerging literacy skills on an individualized basis and work with students individually at their literacy level.” – Lucy Bogdon, Pre-K Teacher

“We tend to see the world through our own eyes and don’t always acknowledge the mediums that allow us to become someone else. I enjoy giving the students the opportunity to view the world from another perspective and to gain insight into different times and places.” – Anthony Greco, Theatre Arts Teacher

STUDENT TALENT SHOWCASED AT ANN UAL ARTS FESTIVAL

“The wonder, the beauty, and the learning in art comes from the process of creation. At RCDS, we value that time of discovery. Experience with processes and materials come first and then skills, ideas, or historical links develop. We hope to encourage each student to learn about and through art. As students grow they are challenged to use their skills to solve problems, deeply investigate materials, and use art to make connections across disciplines.” – Melissa Petersen, Art Teacher

RC D S F I GH TS H UNGER AN D SERVES COMMUN IT Y

“RCDS’s four pillars - Kind, Honest, Responsible, Respectful - are the foundation of our school, but also the foundation of building good human beings. Service Learning is just one of the ways our students are strengthening these pillars and can build upon crucial life skills. Through real experiences and face-to-face encounters students are able to understand the needs of those in their community. They are empowered when they realize the differences they can make and that one child, when joined by his or her peers, can make a huge impact.”

– Amy Clark, Service Learning Coordinator

“This is a bittersweet day. It is the last day we will walk down these hallways and shake the hands of our dear teachers, the last day we will sing our school song, the last day we will be gathered together under the roof of our sweet school. But we will march with the leadership and independence we have learned from our Rumson school— our heads held high and our eyes sparkling.” - Adele Bender, Eighth-grade Commencement Speaker

A Word from our Gator Grads “I received full ride offers at every law school I applied to. I credit the test taking and preparation RCDS taught me as the reason my LSAT scores were so high. I want my children to have the RCDS experience that I did.” – Meredith Cohen Boulos ‘04 Meredith was a clerk with the Honorable Mara E. Zazzali-Hogan, J.S.C. in the Monmouth County Superior Court Civil Division and is now working as an Associate at Ronan, Tuzzio & Giannone.

“The manners I learned from our familystyle lunches set me apart professionally by helping me foster relationships with adults at a young age, many of whom continue to be mentors.” – Joseph F. Lord IV ‘10 Joseph is working at Protiviti, a global consulting firm that delivers deep expertise, objective insights, a tailored approach and unparalleled collaboration to help leaders confidently face the future.

Graduate of: Monmouth University and Brooklyn Law on full scholarships.

Graduate of: The Taft School and Trinity College

“The thing I am most grateful for from my time at RCDS are the friendships that I made and have been able to maintain. We have a group of seven and talk almost daily even though we are all over the world. Joe Buonopane’s mom bought us all small clocks as a graduation gift with “Band of Brothers” inscribed on it. We all take incredibly good care of these clocks and even though we are in Hawaii, Bahamas, Australia, San Francisco, or Africa, it helps to keep us connected.” – Ian Minham ‘07

“Be kind to other people. This is a tenant I live my life by and it was instilled in me by my family and supported by RCDS. There are givers and there are takers in the world. It’s important to be a giver.” – Chelsea Cooper ‘04

Ian is an Account Executive at Checkr, the only background check company using artificial intelligence and machine learning to make hiring more inclusive and more efficient. Graduate of: Blair Academy and Stellenbosch University in South Africa

Chelsea currently lives in NYC and is a doctor completing her specialty training in Dermatology at Columbia University Medical Center. She was recently selected to serve as the Chief Resident in Dermatology for the 2020-2021 academic year at Columbia University Medical Center. Graduate of: Rumson-Fair Haven High School, Northwestern University and Georgetown University School of Medicine.

“I know my success at Lafayette College and in my Master’s program is directly attributable to RCDS. RCDS taught me the study skills and work ethic I needed to succeed. I am still using the study skills that Mr. Utz taught us.” – Elise Reynolds ‘10 Elise is now at the University of Michigan getting her Masters in Public Health and is set to graduate in May. Graduate of: Rumson Fair Haven High School and Lafayette College

“I made so many amazing friends at RCDS, and I have stayed connected to many of my teachers as well. I often reminisce about my middle school days with my friends. Very few grammar schools are able to combine strenuous academics with freedom and fun, and I am grateful for my time spent at the school.” – Meredith Farrington ‘17 Meredith is a junior at Trinity Hall

DEAR RCDS COMMUNITY, A heartfelt thanks to all of our parents who volunteer their time, talent and efforts to support the RCDS Parent Council. Whether acting as a class parent, chair or co-chair of an event, or committee member, it truly takes a village to support fourteen lower school homerooms, four upper school grades, and eighteen activities throughout the year. The Parent Council organization sponsored free activities for our children such as the annual Lower School Halloween Party, Family Reading Night, Mother/Son Dodgeball, and Father/Daughter Darling Dance. Parent Council also hosted Welcome Back and Holiday Breakfasts for our Faculty & Staff and a full week of Appreciation events to support and champion our beloved Faculty & Staff. Many parents worked weekly in our Library to re-shelve books and helped distribute collected coats, toys, and food in our three public service events. Numerous parents helped set up and organize our Book Fair, fold and sell clothing in our Gently Used Uniform Store, bag and distribute pretzels in our monthly Pretzel Day event, and market and sell essentials from our Gator Alley School Store. These four events helped fund our free events listed above and also support the Library, the annual Upper School Shakespeare event, a 7th Grade LIterature Trip and incidentals like free snacks for the Upper School during mid-term and final exams. Our biggest give back to our children & parents, outside of the fun events above, were the three speaker series we sponsored on topics such as resiliency, executive functioning, and social media. The two largest fundraisers Parent Council supports are the Annual Rummage Sale and Gator Bash. The Rummage Sale celebrated its 50th Anniversary this year led by Chairs Meghann Marturano & Ginny Moore. Their dedication and leadership, along with several outstanding sub-committee chairs, served our entire community by raising a substantial donation to the tuition assistance fund as well as support the greater community with the ability to purchase quality goods and clothing at very reasonable prices. After a wonderful night showcasing a kaleidoscope of mixed-media art, song, instrumentals and speech at our annual Arts Festival, the Gator Bash, chaired by Cheryl Jones & Kara Dockery, enveloped our parent, faculty & staff into a super fun night raising funds for both the school’s operating budget and the Gators At Play initiative to provide recreation space and options for all grades into the future. Thank you to our parents, faculty, staff, and administration and greater community for your support of all of these endeavors listed above.

Thank you,

R I B B ON- CUTTING C E RE M ON I E S REV E A L NEW P L AY GROUND AND EQU I PM E N T FOR RC DS S TU D E N T S

In the spring, RCDS’s Annual Gala, Gator Bash, raised funds necessary to make the “Gators at Play” project possible. After months of anticipation, students, faculty, and staff gathered on campus to participate in grade-level ribbon-cutting ceremonies that celebrated the official opening of RCDS’s updated recreational areas. The spaces, outfitted with a variety of new equipment and toys, offer rich, creative play opportunities where students develop strong gross motor skills and cultivate their social, emotional and academic growth across the years.

32

“While playing can look a lot like simple fun, it is actually a complex set of skills that children work hard to master as they learn and grow. At RCDS, we are devoted to giving our students the time and space they need to play, and with the creation of new and updated play spaces, we know the benefits will extend far beyond the outdoors, and into classrooms where refreshed minds focus longer and learning thrives.” – Dr. Nancy Holodak, Head of Lower School

Remembering

Skip Sykes RCDS Head of School from 1977-1989

This past November, The Rumson Country Day School lost a very special family member, former Headmaster Donald M. Sykes, Jr. (“Skip” to his many friends). While most of his former colleagues have retired from RCDS, he is still remembered fondly by his school family. Skip Sykes was, above all, an outstanding educator with a true passion for independent education. Blessed with both intellect and athletic skill, he loved to teach and he loved to coach, but it was the quality of Skip’s character that really set him apart. Kind, caring, understanding, and modest, he also possessed inner strength, great humor, and a powerful sense of family. The news of his passing has encouraged old friends to share their memories of this gentleman, his dedication to our school and the many ways he helped to make RCDS the highly respected school it is today.

“Skip knew his students well. Caring about each student in the school was a hallmark of his tenure. Every December when we left school for the twoweek Winter Break, Skip was just beginning his winter work. He was in his office every day crafting a personal narrative about each ninth grader as they applied to boarding school. His write up left no doubt in the reader’s mind that this Headmaster knew his students and most importantly knew what made them succeed! He supported them as athletes, too, even coaching soccer. I do not think there was a sports game that Skip missed. He was always there on the sidelines cheering his students on. Whenever I attended a conference, faculty from other schools upon hearing where I taught would always remark, ‘That is an excellent school - Skip Sykes is the Head!” – Jayne Carmody, Former Head of Lower School and Director of Testing

“Our two children were in the classes of ‘83 and ’85, a time when a large percentage of every graduating class matriculated at boarding schools. This concept was new to our family and we were nervous about school visits and interviews. Visiting our first school, we received a surprisingly warm and personal welcome. The tour seemed tailor-made to our son’s interests! That’s when we discovered that every RCDS student’s scheduled school visit was preceded by a personal letter of introduction from Skip, making the experiences easier and more productive for everyone. Over time, Skip’s student evaluations proved to be so accurate that all the boarding schools trusted him completely! ‘Skip Sykes’ student references are the best in the business!’ was a phrase we heard at every admissions office that year, and again two years later, when we repeated the process with our daughter.” – Suzy Post, Trustee, Past Parent, Former Staff Member

Below is an example of the language you may use in your will. I give, devise, and bequeath to The Rumson Country Day School, a not-for-profit organization located in Rumson, NJ, $________ or _______ percent (%) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate as an unrestricted gift to be used at the discretion of the Board of Directors of The Rumson Country Day School to help the school continue its long-standing tradition of educational programming designed to nurture the entire child. Please contact Missy Falkenberg, Director of Development, at 732-842-0527 ext 1142 or mfalkenberg@rcds.org for further information.

“ I have included The Rumson Country Day School in my personal estate plans. I chose to make a bequest because it was a very comfortable way for me to contribute. I am a bit of a worrier about money and felt that this method of giving would protect my financial security during my lifetime and still allow me to make a significant gift to the school I love so much.” - Suzy Post, Trustee, Past Parent, Former Staff Member
