Dear RCDS Community, It is with deep appreciation that we acknowledge the more than 500 parents, grandparents, alumni families, teachers and volunteers who helped to make this year’s Annual Giving Campaign and Parent Council initiatives an overwhelming success. The Annual Giving Campaign raised $741,000 to assist our school in offering an education far beyond what tuition dollars alone could provide and one that will empower our graduates for a lifetime.
THA N K Y O U Gifts to The Rumson Country Day School are dedicated to enhancing academic and co-curricular offerings, attracting and retaining top-tier faculty, providing support for an economically diverse community of students, and helping us maintain our beautiful historic campus. Your investment and involvement in our programs, people and facilities ensures the school’s ability to continue fulfilling its mission of providing each student with the finest educational experience possible. Together we will continue to celebrate our strong traditions and culture, and will build on our past successes for future generations of RCDS families.

THE IMPACT OF ANNUAL GIVING
& “THE GAP”
Since RCDS is a relatively small community, as compared to a university or hospital, we have fewer supporters to ask to contribute. This makes every gift we receive from our alumni families, grandparents, parents and staff that much more meaningful and impactful to our school. Your gift to Annual Giving – the school’s most important fundraising priority – is necessary because, each year, there is about a $3,000 “gap” between the cost of tuition and the true cost of an RCDS education. Your contribution to Annual Giving supports every aspect of our students’ lives – from early childhood education through graduation day, to future endeavors. They include: Experiential Education & Trips
Athletics
Extracurricular Activities
Service Learning
Teaching & Learning
Special occasions including alumni reunions, Grandparents Day, the May Arts Festival, Diversity Summit and more
Strategic Integration of Technology The Arts

CLASS OF 2017 COMMENCEMENT
F
amilies, friends, teachers, and administrators looked on with pride as 41 eighth grade boys and girls proceeded across the tented lawn to a stage for The Rumson Country Day School’s Commencement on Friday, June 9.
Eighth grade speaker Shane Schechter set the tone of the evening with a heartfelt and eloquently delivered speech in which he graciously thanked teachers and parents, touched on memories and RCDS traditions, and concluded with inspirational sentiments. “While this may be the end of an excellent chapter in our lives, for every end there is a new beginning,” he said. “I know that we Gators are capable of anything that we can dream of and together we will leave and lead with Kindness, Honesty, Respectfulness, and Responsibility.” Keeping up with RCDS tradition, several students were honored with awards to recognize their hard work, character and talents. The Athletic Department Award, given to the athletes in the graduating class who best exemplify the qualities of athleticism, participation, spirit and sportsmanship was given to Sophia Mahedy and Ian Wurch. Samuel Murphy received The Joseph N. Dempsey, Jr. Award, given by the performing arts program in memory of Jody Dempsey, which recognizes expertise in the performing arts. Formerly known as the Headmaster’s Award, The Blake Award is named after Edgar Bond Blake, who served The Rumson Country Day School for 40 years, 20 of them as Headmaster. This prestigious award was given to Morgan Cecil to acknowledge his exemplary service to RCDS. The Swede Joseph Chevalier Memorial Award was presented by Swede’s mother to honor Alexandra Lewis and her display of kindness and humility towards fellow students, devotion to growth and originality, and perseverance to goals.
8
Board of Trustees member, alum and current parent Carl Reiss proudly presented The Theodore K. Reiss Memorial Award in memory of his brother Ted Reiss. The award was given to Josh Harmon, who best exemplifies the spirit of good sportsmanship, not only on the athletic field, but in all phases of school life. Abigail Ryan achieved top honors at graduation including the Highest Scholarship Award and the Trustees Prize, which recognize the graduate who has attained the highest level of scholarship in the Upper School over the last three years and who has shown the most outstanding qualities of scholarship, sportsmanship, leadership and character. Shane Schechter was honored as this year’s Second Highest Scholarship Winner. Also recognized at the ceremony was Jay Monprode, who retired after 42 years with the RCDS family. A plaque was engraved with “Jay’s Garage” to officially name the maintenance garage in honor of Mr. Monprode’s diligence and tireless service to RCDS. After the presentation of awards and diplomas, the Class of 2017 was joined by all in attendance to sing The Rumson School Song, evoking goosebumps and triggering a few tears among the crowd. “We love that school, loyal will our hearts e’er be,“ they sang during the emotional send off.
We are so proud of The Rumson Country Day School Class of 2017 graduates and wish them the best of luck at the following secondary schools:

TECHNOLOGY
“
RCDS is fortunate to have fully integrated technology into the classroom since 2011. Today, every student has an iPad and its use is not limited to computer science classes. These devices expand possibilities inside the classroom.
“
- Jeff Utz, Technology Coordinator
DIVERSITY SUMMIT The importance of storytelling and utilizing art for activism were among a wide range of topics covered during
THE THIRD ANNUAL MIDDLE SCHOOL DIVERSITY SUMMIT hosted by RCDS. Emmy-winning filmmaker Steve Engel addressed seventh and eighth graders from RCDS and neighboring schools who participated in the Summit. Students attended workshops with RCDS visual arts and creative writing teachers, plus RCDS graduate Mariah Stewart who discussed her experience working in conjunction with Engel’s documentary.

ARTS FESTIVAL
Over 600 parents, students and teachers experienced the enthusiasm of The Second Annual RCDS Arts Festival. The concept of the festival is to inspire and elevate both the visual and performing arts. Students from nursery to grade eight contributed to the broad scope of art displayed throughout the building, including watercolors, ceramics, mosaics, origami and more. Students performed solos, duets, instrumental and chorale numbers, as well as public speaking and forensics.
“
As an artist and educator it really is my job to inspire. I try to communicate an idea that evokes feeling because that’s the purpose of art – to make people feel. It is important to lift my students and encourage them to see from creative perspectives so when they leave here they can fly.

“
- Melissa Petersen, Head of the Art Department
“
I am confident that RCDS has prepared all of us for the next leg of our academic journey, and I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead…I know that we Gators are capable of anything that we can dream of and together we will leave and lead with Kindness, Honesty, Respectfulness, and Responsibility.

DEAR FRIENDS, I want to thank the RCDS community for another wonderful year. Due to the kindness of each of you, we were able to accomplish so much for our students. I am amazed at the dedication, hard work and generosity of all our fellow parents who have come together and celebrated the RCDS family. The volunteer efforts and support of all our parents enabled Parent Council to make a generous donation of approximately $224,000 to our school and children during the 2016-2017 school year. This donation has allowed us to purchase the following: the additional furniture to complete the Upper and Lower School common areas, four new filtered water fountains, and needed funding to complete the 8th grade donation of the outdoor garden classroom. I would like to give special thanks to Gator Bash Chairs Carrie Page and Sarah Bradley, as well as all of their committee members. Because of their tireless efforts and the generosity of our parents, Gator Bash raised approximately $117,000. Parent Council, once again, enthusiastically supplemented and enhanced the education of our children. We brought in many speakers and programs, co-hosted the 90th Anniversary Field Day, the Halloween Party, and BINGO night. We also financially supported the Upper school dances, donated t-shirts to the Arts Festival, and made a generous donation to the library. Parent Council has continued its tradition of making a significant donation to the RCDS Financial Aid Fund from our Annual Rummage Sale. Thank you to Chairs Nellie Harmon, Samantha Popham, Melissa Stevenson, and the entire Whale of a Sale team. Thank you to the parent body who made the weekend such a success, not only for RCDS but also for our local community. As my term as Parent Council President comes to an end, I want to thank each and every one of you for your support over the last two years. I look forward to working with you again in the future. Fondly,
NIKKI ALPERT Parent Council President 2015-2017

LEGACY SOCIETY The Legacy Society honors those supporters who have designated a portion of their assets in their will or through their estate planning to benefit The Rumson Country Day School. Gifts from bequests and trusts ensure the future of our remarkable school, support our mission and help establish a lasting legacy of excellence at RCDS for today’s students and for generations to come. Individuals who include the school in their estate plans become members of The Rumson Country Day School Legacy Society. All names are recognized in our Annual Donor Report and on the school’s website. Whatever your objectives, we are happy to work with you in planning and bequest that will be satisfying, economical and effective in carrying out your wishes. Please contact us so that we can assist you through every step of the process OR if you have included RCDS in your estate planning. We would like to add your name to our distinguished list of supporters. Please contact Missy Falkenberg, Director of Development, at 732-842-0527 x 1142 or mfalkenberg@rcds.org for further information.
“I have included The Rumson Country Day School in my personal estate plans. I chose to make a bequest because it was a very comfortable way for me to contribute. I am a bit of a worrier about money and felt that this method of giving would protect my financial security during my lifetime and still allow me to make a significant gift to the school I love so much.” - Suzy Post
