MISSION

INSIDE

The Rumson Country Day School, founded in 1926 as an independent educational institution, seeks to: p rovide students from all communities with a dynamic, challenging academic experience in a safe and supportive environment; n ourish academic excellence, individual and social responsibility, civic awareness, and leadership skills; i nspire our graduates to become life-long learners able to thrive, contribute, and excel in a demanding secondary school environment and in today’s global society.

“Your philanthropy supports a school that offers an exceptional education and serves its students for life. If you were to visit the RCDS campus on any given day you would witness a hive of activity guaranteed to impress. How many schools can boast that their students claim Latin is awesome, or look forward to fourth grade so they can be waiters in the dining room, or have a chance to perform on stage each year? Thank you for supporting all of these opportunities, all of our inquiring minds, and the faculty and staff who make this special education experience come alive.” -Jayne Geiger, Head of School

In addition, an anonymous donor made an instrumental gift of $265,000 to help restore and enhance our historic Chad Small Family Dining Room, where family-style lunch will remain in perpetuity. Our wonderful parents responded by raising another $100,000 to update the space with new lighting, chairs, tables, a cold-filtered water station and a soup, salad and sandwich bar.

VALUED AT APPROXIMATELY $15 MILLION AS OF JUNE 30, 2018, The Rumson Country Day School’s endowment is an investment in the future that is intended to ensure the school can continue to pursue its mission in perpetuity with palpable momentum and a remarkable trajectory forward. A strong endowment endeavors to provide a permanent source of income and affords RCDS the opportunity to both plan and fulfill strategic, long-term decisions on a solid financial foundation. It is critically important to continue to grow our endowment to fulfill our vision of attracting the best students, providing access for those who would not otherwise be able to attend RCDS, supporting our talented faculty and staff and meeting the needs of unique programs.

THE IMPACT OF ANNUAL GIVING & “THE GAP” Since RCDS is a relatively small community, as compared to a university or hospital, we have fewer supporters to ask to contribute. This makes every gift we receive from our alumni families, grandparents, parents and staff that much more meaningful and impactful to our school.

They include:

Your gift to Annual Giving – the school’s most important fundraising priority – is necessary because, each year, there is about a $3,600 “gap” between the cost of tuition and the true cost of an RCDS education.

Strategic Integration of Technology

Your contribution to Annual Giving supports every aspect of our students’ lives – from early childhood education through graduation day, to future endeavors.

At RCDS, we are committed to raising socially-aware and compassionate citizens. Our community service elective provides students with the opportunities to recognize the needs of others, tap into their own talents or gifts, and share a positive moment with someone else. Everyone should be able to experience moments like these and at RCDS I have the opportunity to give that to our students. It is truly awesome. -Amy Clark, RCDS Service Learning Coordinator.

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS HOLIDAY CONCERT Students spread holiday cheer through song as they performed at RCDS’s Holiday Concert. Keeping up with long-standing tradition, everyone in attendance joined in singing an emotional rendition of “White Christmas” to close the night.

49TH ANNUAL RUMMAGE SALE RCDS’s renowned “Whale of a Sale” proved to be another great success 49 years after its inauguration! The entire a massive collection of donated household items. The sale benefited the school’s financial aid program in addition to supporting a number of local charities.

ARTS FESTIVAL FIELD DAY The sun shone bright and spirits soared as students played tug of war, competed in sponge relays, sack races and more at the RCDS Field Day Color Wars. After much anticipation, an announcement on Class Day crowned the green team champions.

Students from nursery through eighth grade contributed to the broad scope of art displayed at RCDS’s Annual Arts Festival. Hundreds of parents and friends were invited to witness the creativity and talent as students performed solos, duets, monologues, instrumental and chorale numbers to elevate the performing arts in addition to the visual exhibits.

So here we are now, each and every member of the graduating class. Each with a different book filled with unique chapters, yet we share many similar experiences. We will always remember sharing meals with faculty and students in all grades, traveling together to various field trips, making lifelong friends, and participating in the life of the school - playing sports, involvement in the arts and community service…we all share the same sentiments and can attest that RCDS is great at growing people. -Lydia Lu ‘18

THE WORLD NEEDS MORE RCDS GRADUATES “Go travel the world. Get out there. Do what you want to do and not what you think you are expected to do.” –Ann Carson Powell ‘35

A Word from our Gator Grads “RCDS gave me critical time management skills early on that helped me in high school, and even at Brown. I was in honors classes and always had a lot on my plate. I had to learn quickly how to manage all of the work and size it down into chunks to be able to get it all done. I remember Mr. Scott, from my Geography class, giving us assignment sheets and suggestions on how to break up the work. Our planner was given to us to use early on and became as important as our textbooks. There is no way, with my current classes, long labs, and conferences, that I would be successful managing my course load if not for my foundation in planning.” – Jack Padovano ‘12 Junior at Brown University Graduated from: Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School as Valedictorian

Where in the world are RCDS alumni now? A Selection of Secondary School Admission: Andover • Blair Academy • Canterbury School • Christian Brothers Academy • Deerfield Academy • High Tech • Kent School • MAST • Millbrook School • Peddie School • Ranney School • Red Bank Catholic • Red Bank Regional High School • Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School • St. Andrew’s School • St. Paul’s School • The Hotchkiss School • The Lawrenceville School • Trinity Hall • Westminster School

“While many of my classmates were overwhelmed with stress during our first finals week at Lawrenceville, I was more composed after my years of experience with midterms and finals at RCDS. The academic rigor of the RCDS curriculum has prepared me well for high school.” Senior at The Lawrenceville School Accepted and Attending The University of Pennsylvania in Fall 2019

“Our classes at RCDS were more than just reading text books. We had hands-on experience and were encouraged to get a handle on all of the different sciences, immersing ourselves in the learning so we could really understand it on a deeper level. I brought this experience with me to Trinity Hall. I really felt prepared during my Freshman year, more so than most of my classmates. Many of my friends described how hard the jump had been for them, but for me it felt seamless. This is just a continuation of my learning.” – Hannah Reynolds ‘15 Senior at Trinity Hall

“Mr. Utz was great at energizing students in his class using current events as a platform for meaningful discussions. He taught me History, which was happening as we led up to the Iraq War. He gave us a comprehensive background of the country’s history. We had to follow the United Nations Policy Briefings and Press. We heard reports from all sides, and were encouraged to formulate and articulate our own views.” – John Joseph Marinan V ‘04 Associate Director at UBS AG, Investment Banking Company Graduate of: Christian Brother Academy and the University of Scranton

“All of the writing in 6th, 7th and 8th grade really put me ahead of the curve in college. I received several compliments from faculty throughout my college career and I know it was due to the writing I had done during my early education.” –Kristen Bonello ‘03 Pediatrics Resident at Duke University Graduate of: MAST, Dartmouth College, Georgetown, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School

“I remember that the camaraderie at RCDS was really amazing. The teachers took such a great interest in the students. The biggest influence on me was Mr. Garside. If not for him, I would not have chosen a career in science.” –Cynthia Holzer Sparr ‘83 CMO at the UnitedHealthcare® Community Plan of MA Graduate of: Red Bank Catholic High School, Wellesley College, Wright State University School of Medicine and University of Cincinnati Geriatric Medicine Fellowship

DEAR RCDS COMMUNITY, It was with great pleasure and pride to serve as the RCDS Parent Council President for the 2017-2018 school year. That job could not have been done without the hard work, dedication, and support of our Executive Parent Council members along with the 15 activity chairs, 28 class parents and the entire parent body who volunteered their time to support our school. It truly takes a village to stage all the special activities such as the Halloween Party, Book Fair, Gently Worn Uniform Sale, school store, pretzel days, movie days, theatre day, tail gators and faculty/staff appreciation days. Through the support of the RCDS parent body we were able to secure unique speakers such as Dr. Michele Borba, an internationally-recognized psychologist and expert on parenting, bullying, and character to kick off our year-long coffee talk series, setting parents up for success and providing tips on how to strengthen children’s empathy. Later, we hosted Dr. Steven Greco who provided tips and training on executive functioning, many of those recommendations already established here at RCDS through our student binder systems and daily planners. We geared up for a fabulous 49th Annual Rummage Sale that resulted in a healthy donation to our financial aid fund. It also supported our friends in the greater community giving them the opportunity to purchase quality gently-used clothing, shoes, accessories, furniture, home goods and outdoor goods. Overstocked items were donated to over 10 local nonprofits. Thank you to my co-chair Meghann Marturano for her leadership, calm and creativity to make Rummage one heck of a great time! We could not have done it without the support of our sub-chairs in charity liaisons, hospitality, boutique, home goods and bake sale to make it a super smooth-running event. We ended the year with a spectacular kaleidoscope for the senses at the Arts Festival, which showcased our students’ artistic and musical endeavors and led us right into Gator Bash to celebrate our biggest “friend-raiser” of the year! Special thanks to chairs Suzanne Rubin and Maryam Spector, along with their entire sub-committee, for transforming the gym into a night of fun. Their leadership in rallying the parents led to a sizable donation to contribute to the operating budget and to complete the campaign to “Set the Table” for the Chad Small Family Dining Room renovation. The full support of the parent body, as well as the extended family at RCDS, allowed for the amazing transformation of the Chad Small Family Dining Room that each of our children, faculty & staff now enjoy. We are so lucky to be a part of a caring community that wants to support our school. Thank you parents for all of your support of Parent Council activities! Your time and effort from shelving books, to sorting gently used clothes, to staffing our school store, to decorating the gym, to being a class parent or chairing an event, big or small makes our school unique and special! We are forever grateful for all of your time and energy! Thank you for your continued support,

CHAD SMALL FAMILY DINING ROOM RENOVATION SUPPORTERS RCDS keeps a number of long-held traditions sacred. One of the most memorable takes place every school day in the historic Chad Small Family Dining Room where lunch is served family-style at tables where students of all ages are mixed and joined by a teacher or administrator. Gator Bash enabled RCDS to undertake a full restoration of the dining room, and continue the tradition of eating lunch family-style in perpetuity. Students, faculty, administrators and board members gathered on the RCDS lawn on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 to participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the official opening of the restored dining room.

We are excited to reveal the updated space that has such a significant impact on the RCDS experience. The Chad Small Family Dining Room is a place where we reinforce our sense of community and nurture long-lasting relationships. It is also where we foster life lessons, manners and take a break from the academic day. The work completed over the summer will enhance the dining experience for years to come while preserving the aspects that make it so unique. -Jayne Geiger, Head of School

LEGACY SOCIETY The Legacy Society honors those supporters who have designated a portion of their assets in their will or through their estate planning to benefit The Rumson Country Day School. Gifts from bequests and trusts ensure the future of our remarkable school, support our mission and help establish a lasting legacy of excellence at RCDS for today’s students and for generations to come. Individuals who include the school in their estate plans become members of The Rumson Country Day School Legacy Society. All names are recognized in our Annual Donor Report and on the school’s website. Please contact Missy Falkenberg, Director of Development, at 732-842-0527 ext 1142 or mfalkenberg@rcds.org for further information.

You can have a lasting impact on the people and organization that means so much to you! See below for an example of the language you may use in your will. I give, devise, and bequeath to The Rumson Country Day School, a not-for-profit organization located in Rumson, NJ, $________ or _______ percent (%) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate as an unrestricted gift to be used at the discretion of the Board of Directors of The Rumson Country Day School to help the school continue its long-standing tradition of educational programming designed to nurture the entire child.

“I have included The Rumson Country Day School in my personal estate plans. I chose to make a bequest because it was a very comfortable way for me to contribute. I am a bit of a worrier about money and felt that this method of giving would protect my financial security during my lifetime and still allow me to make a significant gift to the school I love so much.” - Suzy Post, Trustee, Past Parent, Former Staff Member
