Welcome back to another edition of the SA Expat We have decided to dedicate this issue to all the victims of the Kenyan Terrorist attack. Our condolences goes out to all the people affected. We are also running a feature in this month's issue focusing on known terrorist groups throughout the world, the focus being on educating the general public on the vast number of known terrorist groups out there. As usual we focus on South African Films in our Afrikaans section, Paul Lambis is enlightening us with his “not of the shelf humour” , we show you how to recycle those empty bottles and how to make traditional South African Gingerbeer. In our Legal section we advise on Identity Theft and what to do if this happens to you. The guys from “ Tune Me What” are also back with lots of interesting reading on South African music and musicians. In our Business section we focus on recovering money from companies that owe your business money, and finally in the Sport section we teach you a bit of Golfing lingo so that you can talk golf like a pro even if you don't play the game. Well that's about it, remember to contact us if you are interested in either contributing or advertising with us. Cool Bananas !

Protecting the UK Against Terrorism PROSCRIBED TERRORIST ORGANISATIONS PROSCRIPTION CRITERIA Under the Terrorism Act 2000, the Home Secretary may proscribe an organisation if they believe it is concerned in terrorism. For the purposes of the Act, this means that it: * commits or participates in acts of terrorism; * prepares for terrorism; * promotes or encourages terrorism (including the unlawful glorification of terrorism); * or is otherwise concerned in terrorism. If the statutory test is met, there are other factors which the Secretary of State will take into account when deciding whether or not to exercise their discretion to proscribe. These criteria are: * the nature and scale of an organisation’s activities; * the specific threat that it poses to the UK; * the specific threat that it poses to British nationals overseas; * the extent of the organisation’s presence in the UK; and * the need to support other members of the international community in the global fight against terrorism. Proscription makes it a criminal offence to: * belong to or invite support for a proscribed organisation. * arrange a meeting in support of a proscribed organisation. * wear clothing or carry articles in public which arouse reasonable suspicion that an individual is a member or supporter of the proscribed organisation. The penalties for proscription offences can be a maximum of 10 years in prison and/or a £5,000 fine. Section3(6) of the Terrorism Act 2000 allows the Home Secretary, by Order subject to the negative resolution procedure, to specify an alternative name for a proscribed organisation. The use of an alternative name which is not listed does not prevent the police and Crown Prosecution Service from taking action against an individual for proscription offences. For a successful prosecution, it would be necessary to demonstrate that the proscribed organisation is operating under that alias. LIST OF PROSCRIBED INTERNATIONAL TERRORIST GROUPS * 51 international terrorist organisations are proscribed under the Terrorism Act 2000. * Of these, two organisations are proscribed under powers introduced in the Terrorism Act 2006, as glorifying terrorism.14 organisations in Northern Ireland are proscribed under previous legislation. * The information about the groups' aims was given to Parliament when they were proscribed. 17 November Revolutionary Organisation (N17) Aims to highlight and protest at what it deems to be imperialist and corrupt actions, using violence. A new manager spends a week at his new office with the manager he is replacing. On the last day the departing manager tells him, "I have left three numbered envelopes in the desk drawer. Open an envelope if you encounter a crisis you can't solve." Three months down the track there is major drama, everything goes wrong - the usual stuff - and the manager feels very threatened by it all. He remembers the parting words of his predecessor and opens the first envelope. The message inside says "Blame your predecessor!" He does this and gets off the hook. About half a year later, the company is experiencing a dip in sales, combined with serious product problems. The manager quickly opens the second envelope. The message read, "Reorganize!" This he does, and the company quickly rebounds. Three months later, at his next crisis, opens the third envelope. The message says "Prepare three envelopes"

The Baobab Tree The Baobab Tree beguiles anyone who hails from Southern Africa. It has a magnetic pull and an allure. It has a feeling of antiquity and solidity about it- with its heavy robust form; a giant edifice which looms up in its magnificence and grounds us to Africa. On a trajectory level, though, it has the symbolism of being uprooted- mythologically called the ‘Upside Down Tree’. This is the feature which fascinated me - and which provided me with the inspiration to opt for a Baobab tree as the ‘Scatterlings – A Tapestry of Afri-Expat Tales’ book cover design- A tree which signified that we hailed from the vigorous continent of Africa; yet that as the African migrant Diaspora, we often felt uprooted and in some ways may have felt as though we had insidiously, yet rather brutally been shoved head- first into a new and alien soil. For me, there is a sense of reassurance, knowing that as immigrants from Southern Africa, we take with us some of the qualities of the mystical Baobab tree… We take with us that embodiment of Africa- as children of Africa the quintessence is imprinted in our footprint and our heartbeat. We, too, germinated in Africa. We take with us that solidity which signifies that as immigrants we retain that vitality and survival spirit- so that even when we are ‘cut down to size’ - in our new land - we are able to regenerate ourselves to emerge with an adapted reformatted identity. We take with us certain magical and rather unique qualities which people who don’t hail from Africa simply cannot fathom. Possibly it’s in our DNA- children who hail from such antiquity. Or possibly it’s in the air we inhaled, or in the vistas and vibrant energies which we assimilated into our earliest memories- the prowess, passion, fury and unharnessed core of Africa. We are the Baobab Trees- dispersed to the far corners of the Blue Marble, where we are able to sew that African vigour and joie de vivre into a new fabric… Quote: “The magical Baobab tree, also known as the “Tree of Life”, and “The Monkey Bread Tree” is steeped in a wealth of mystique and legend, wherever it occurs in areas of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique and other tropical African countries where suitable habitat occurs. Many local tribes people believe that the Baobab tree grows upside-down, due to the massive trunk, which gives rise to thick tapering branches resembling a root system. There is a tale amongst indigenous people, which tell of how God planted the trees upside-down. Many references have made mention of the exceptional vitality of this tree, noting that even after the entire tree is cut down it simply resprouts from the root and continues to grow; the same is noted of trees which have been blown over in storms. Despite this remarkable vitality, when a tree dies it collapses into a heap of soggy, fibrous pulp. Stories exist of how such quickly decomposing trees spontaneously combust and get completely burnt up. A sure sign of a magical tree... The Baobab tree can provide shelter, water, food and relief from sickness…”

My precious (Saffa-Kiwi) grand daughter Emma aged 11 designed the book cover with her own ‘take’ on it to create the Rainbow Baobab- now emblazoned on the book cover far and wide! My gratitude also goes to Glen Eden School in Auckland whose Kiwi pupils were thrilled to be taught about the Baobab Tree and provided some of the other delightful pictures.

Creative Ways to Repurpose Empty Wine Bottles Enjoy the wine and toss the bottle into the recycle bin. However, you can have more fun with the empty wine bottles by reusing them in 'n' number of ways. With some creativity, you can infuse new life into the empty wine bottles that are dumped in the trash. Create something new for dĂŠcor or for functional purposes, thereby, benefiting both the environment and Economy. There are people who save empty wine bottles because there may be certain special memories associated with them. Some people just plain forget to throw them away, and eventually end up increasing the junk in the basement. Whatever the case, if you have empty wine bottles lying around, put them to good use by employing certain creative ideas and techniques. Even antique and unique wine bottles can be used for decorative purposes. Those empty bottles can be transformed into something that can be used for decorative or utility purposes. Here are some easy stuff to do with empty wine bottles.
Ready for decor ...
Given above are some images of painted wine bottles that can be used as flower vases, candle holders, or just as showpieces. Soak the bottles in water, and remove the labels as well as the metal collars. Once the bottles are clean and dry, start painting them. You may use spray paint or regular paint. You may go for colors and designs of your choice. While a single coat of paint may be sufficient in some cases, others may require two to three coats. The bottles can be used as and when the paint dries completely. You may use a wide range of materials, like beads, glitter, threads, plastic or fabric flowers, clothes, etc., for decorating wine bottles. You may also use painted wine bottles for this purpose. Another option is to fill the bottle with colored sand, small pebbles, or beads. Take a look at the images given below, for some designs and ideas.
Store Infused infused oils If you are looking for suitable containers for storing flavored oils, then empty wine bottles are perfect. Use bottles with tight corks or stoppers. After washing and removing the labels and metal collars, sterilize the bottles properly. Once the bottles are drained and dry, fill them with the flavored oil. Add fresh herbs and spices to enhance the look. Seal the bottles with corks or stoppers.
Grow herbs * Clean the bottles, and cut them horizontally. The neck piece must be shorter than the bottom piece. * The neck piece has to be placed inside (with the broader end up) the bottom part. In that case, it should not touch the base of the bottom part. * Cutting glass is a task that should be done carefully. If you are not good at it, seek help from a professional. Make sure to sand down the edges. * Once done, keep the cut bottles aside, and take a 2'' x 2'' wire mesh. Make a hole through the center of the mesh, using a knife. * Pass a string through the hole, and make a knot on one side so that it stays in place. Now pass the string through the broad end of the neck piece of the bottle so that it comes out through the narrow part. * The bottom part has to be partly filled with water, and the neck piece with the dangling string has to be placed inside it. The broader part of the neck piece must face upward. * Fill soil or other medium, and plant your herb. While the mesh holds the soil in place, the string absorbs water required by the plant.

Spicy Jumbo Shrimps With Old Cape Flavours Ingredients: 2 lbs shrimp, large, peeled, deveined and rinsed (2 lbs or 1 kg is the cleaned weight) 1 cup yoghurt, full cream (or Greek yoghurt) 1/4 cup honey 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (lime juice is also great) 8 cardamom pods, crushed (use a pestle and mortar) 2 tablespoons fresh ginger (minced, grated or very finely chopped) 2 tablespoons garlic, fresh (peeled, chopped and crushed) 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons turmeric, ground 2 teaspoons paprika (not hot) 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or use a few drops hot sauce) 1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions:
Total Time: 30 mins Prep Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 15 mins
1. In a large bowl mix the ingredients from the yoghurt, down to the salt. Whisk well. It's best to do this well ahead, and leave this sauce, covered, at room temperature -- the flavours meld and improve a lot. 2. Place the cleaned shrimps (preferable in one layer) in a large oven dish or tin, and coat the shrimps with the mixture. Keep some of the sauce for later, if there is enough. Shake the dish, so the thickish sauce penetrates to the bottom of the dish. 3. Marinate the shrimps in the fridge for 1 hour. 4. To grill over hot coals, skewer the shrimps close together on skewers (soaked in water if using wooden skewers). Grill quickly and carefully only until they curl up and turn pink, using any leftover or extra sauce to brush them with. 5. Or bake in a 350 deg F/180 deg C oven, brushing once with the rest of the marinade. 6. Bake only until they turn pink and curl up -- better watch this, as I forgot to time this bit! If they're cold out of the fridge they will take longer -- it's better to take the dish out of the fridge 30 minutes before cooking time. (Tonight, cold from the fridge, they took only about 20 mins to cook). 7. If done in the oven, serve with the juices, over rice. If grilled on skewers, serve with salads and bread. 8. Be warned that shrimps shrink a lot in cooking, and as a main dish 2 lbs/1 kg will really only serve 4 adults! 9. You could stretch it by serving it as a starter, on baby mixed greens moistened with vinaigrette. Serve with crusty bread. 10. Prep time does not include cleaning the shrimps or the marinating time.
Old-fashioned, home-made South African Ginger Beer A delicious taste of childhood: lemony, gingery and fizzy. It's so refreshing and so easy to make that I have now resolved to make a batch every two days. It's the taste of dusty summer days, burbling swimming pools, country fĂŞtes and beaming grannies. grated rind of 2 lemons 2 thumb-sized pieces of fresh ginger 250 ml (1 cup) freshly squeezed lemon juice (see Note 2, below) 3 grape-sized knobs of whole dried ginger (optional, see Note 3) 6 raisins 750 ml (3 cups) white sugar (if you prefer a dry beer, use 650 ml) 5 litres water a 10-gram sachet of instant (active dry) yeast Using the fine teeth of a cheesegrater, grate the lemon rind directly into a large, very clean plastic bucket (or a plastic bowl capable of holding 5 litres of water; see Note 1, below). Be sure not to grate in any any bits of white pith, which will make the beer bitter. Now grate in the fresh ginger, using the coarse teeth of the grater. Add the freshly Wonderfully refreshing home-made ginger beer from South Africa. squeezed lemon juice, the whole dried ginger (optional), the raisins, and the sugar. Pour 1 litre of hot water into the bucket and stir well for about 3 minutes, or until the sugar has completely dissolved. Leave to cool for 5 minutes. Now pour another 4 litres of warm water into the bucket, keeping a finger in the bucket to monitor the temperature of the water. The mixture should be warm - a few degrees above blood temperature - but not so warm that your finger thinks it's having a nice hot bath. * Sprinkle the dried yeast over the top of the water and leave for five minutes, or until it's dissolved. Now give the bucket of liquid a good stir with a wooden spoon or similar implement. * Cover the bucket with cling film and put it in a warmish place (not in direct sunlight). Leave for about 45 hours, stirring once or twice. During this time, you'll see the raisins begin to spin in the water and the mixture will burble softly. When the raisins float to the top, the ginger beer is ready to bottle. * Scoop out the floating ginger pieces and lemon rind with a sieve and discard. Now strain the ginger beer, through a sieve, into a large jug with a pouring spout (you may have to do this in batches, if your jug is small). Put a towel or some newspaper on the counter while you do this, because there will be spillage. * Decant the strained ginger beer into clean, rinsed plastic bottles (see Note 3, below), filling each bottle to about 7 centimetres from the top. Put a single raisin (taken from the raisins you added earlier) in each bottle, screw on the lids tightly, and set the bottles on a counter-top, at room temperature. They shouldn't be in a warm place, or in direct sunlight. * Leave overnight (or for at least 8 hours). During this time, the mixture will develop a lovely fizz. (See Note 4, below). * Now open each bottle very carefully: unscrew the lid gingerly (excuse the pun), in small increments, so that the gas escapes in little puffs. The liquid inside should fizz satisfyingly. When you've released the excess gas, screw on the lids tightly again, and put the bottles in the fridge. (The cold will all but stop the fermentation process). * Leave to chill completely. Serve with a slice of lemon and plenty of ice. Or try it with a stiff glug of gin. Makes about 5 litres. Keeps well in the fridge for up to a week.

Identity Theft Your identity is one of your most valuable assets. However, criminals can use a number of methods to find out your personal information and will then use it to open bank accounts, take out credit cards and apply for state benefits in your name. If your identity is stolen, you can lose money and may find it difficult to get loans, credit cards or a mortgage until the matter is sorted out.
What signs should I look out for? There are a number of signs to look out for that may mean you are or may become a victim of identity theft. These include: You have lost or have important documents stolen, such as your passport or driving licence. Post from your bank or utility provider doesn’t arrive. Items that you don’t recognise appear on your bank or credit card statement. You apply for state benefits, but are told you are already claiming. You receive bills or receipts for goods or services you haven’t asked for. You are refused financial services, credit cards or a loan, despite having a good credit rating. You receive letters in your name from solicitors or debt collectors for debts that aren’t yours.
What can I do if I'm a victim of identity theft? If you think you are a victim identity theft or fraud, act quickly to ensure you are not liable for any financial losses. Report all lost or stolen documents, such as passports, driving licences, credit cards and cheque books to the organisation that issued them. Gasak is a graffiti artist from Pietermartizburg , South Africa with a mission to bring Peace and Awareness to the murder capital of the world by using a spraycan as his weapon of choice to portray peace. BE INSPIRED Mission: To bring awareness to the drug war and criminal organizations running within it on an international level. To bring unity and peace while using art as a form of protest against the drug war and criminal organizations running within it. Vision Services: Public talks to schools and narcotic rehabilitation Centre’s in RSA and USA about the effect that drugs have on the world; the economy, addicts as well as everyday people who do not have any direct contact with drugs or the criminal organisations. Aim To paint 8 large-scale portraits of international peace leaders on public walls in the heart of the drug war, which is the murder capital of the world and the hotspot for the biggest criminal organisation of the world as well as it’s bordering city; Juarez, Mexico and Texas, America. From a birds eye view the portraits will geographically form a heart. History Why does event exist: whilst approaching a club in Durban South Africa to do a mural as a form of fundraising for Faces to inspire , Gasak was approached by 8 men who were on drugs at the time, they proceeded to physically assault and strip search him checking for wires linked to the police then finally removed his only personal item on him which was his cellphone. After being threatened with his life if he took the situation to the police, Gasak approached the main police headquarters in Durban anyway. The police accused him of being in that area to sell his cellphone for drugs. This is when Gasak came to the realisation that the drug war not only affects the people directly in contact with drugs but also innocent bystanders. How did it start: After much research it was evident that tackling small areas which are affected by the drug war would not make the greatest impact but rather going to the heart of the matter in Mexico and America would get a bigger result on an international level. Past successful projects Faces to Inspire (2011) - A week long project where five faces were painted of inspirational and successful South African celebrities to bring hope and color to Kwa Mashu; a township community in one of the highest crime rated areas in South Africa. From a birds eye view the portraits geographically form a heart. The objective was for a South African white male to break racial boundaries by living in the township during the course of this project. *Please note that a lot of anthropological research has gone into the “Face the Peace” project, and the project will be conducted in a disciplined, professional, and ethical manner from start to finish. Wind up a company that owes you money 1. Overview You can apply to the court to ‘wind up’ a company if it can’t pay its debts of more than £750. Your application to the court is known as a ‘winding up petition’. If successful, the company will be put into liquidation. You may not get all or any of the money you’re owed - a debt specialist (eg a solicitor) can help you work out the best way to recover a debt and send your petition. Before you petition the court You must be able to: * prove the company owes more than £750 (to one or more creditors) * prove the company can’t repay what they owe You can use a statutory demand to do this. This is a formal request for the debt to be paid. You can petition the court if the company: * doesn’t respond to the statutory demand within 21 days * breaks a written promise to pay the debt Scottish companies The winding up process is different in Scotland. 2. Four Simple Steps to a Healthier and Leaner Life
Many are jumping from diet to diet in pursuit of a thin and healthy body. Over the past eight years, GI (low-glycemic) and then LCHF, have been the most popular methods in Sweden. However, during the past few weeks intermittent fasting in the form of 5:2 (eat just 5-600 calories two days a week) has become hysterically popular. The reason is likely that all three methods work. Furthermore, they work in a similar way. The figure above is from a recent and worth-reading post by science writer Ann Fernholm: You’ll Become Less Sweet with the 5:2 Diet (Google translated from Swedish).
http://www.dietdoctor.com/four-simple-steps-healthier-leaner-life
Lifestyle for Weight Regulation and Health The figure above shows how all versions of a low-carb diet (for example a low glycemic load diet, LCHF, Atkins or Paleo) will lower blood sugar and the fat storing hormone insulin. And so does intermittent fasting, such as 5:2 or 16:8. And so do exercise and adequate amounts of sleep and relaxation (by hormonal influence). In other words, a low-carb diet, intermittent fasting, good sleep and exercise create a synergistic effect – for optimal weight and good health. However, diet is by far the biggest piece of the puzzle when it comes to weight. The Opposite What about the opposite of this? A lifestyle that creates the worst conditions for maintaining a good weight and health? This means living a lifestyle that most people in our modern society live today: Lifestyle for Obesity and Disease
The figure above is also from Fernholm’s blog post, but I modified (improved) it a little. What’s the best way to become fat and sick? There are four pieces of this puzzle. 1. Eat a diet full of bad carbs and sugar (this includes all wheat flour foods – such as bread and pasta – which turns into glucose already in the stomach). Looking for low-fat products may facilitate weight gain (fat storing) as they often contain extra sugar/starch 2. Make sure to eat at least every three hours (a sick piece of advice) 3. Keep a continuously high stress level and sleep too little 4. Don’t exercise Conclusion Follow the advice in the green figure to become thinner and healthier. Or choose the red ones for the opposite effect. Which one of the green puzzle pieces is hardest for you to do?

“A dream to some - A nightmare to others” Self-Defence for Men, Women and Children Crime figures from the Metropolitan Police show that there are over 150,000 violent attacks in London each year and just under 10,000 sexual attacks, including rape (of children, women and men) and1000 knife attacks each month in London alone. * Do you feel safe when travelling or in your home alone? * What would you do if someone confronted you or attacked you? * Do you travel late at night or on your own? How quickly one reacts to an attack is critical. Everyone experiences shock; we teach people how to override the shock of an attack as quickly as possible and to react positively and instinctively. We teach the skills to defend against any type of attack; bare hand, kick, knife, bottle, guns, from faceon, the side, behind, and on the ground and even how to defend yourself from more than one attacker.
"You have got nothing to lose, but everything to gain" Taking a self-defence course or learning self defence in our martial arts classes is like buying insurance for your house or car; it offers you peace of mind. We teach students self-defence techniques that give them the confidence to defend themselves in any situation. We teach self-defence as part of all our martial arts lessons, plus self-defence courses for members and non-members, located in and around South London and Surrey. Courses can be tailor made to suit your business, organisations, school or college. We offer specific self-defence for children in our dedicated children’s martial arts classes, which give children the skills to defend themselves against playground bullies, attacks and unwanted advances from other children and adults.
Having skills in self-defence in London is important, because violent and sexual crime is a reality! To go through life just hoping ‘it will not happen to me’ is a mistake, potentially a fatal mistake. The reality is that you may be the victim of a violent or sexual attack. Learning how to defend yourself is the only viable way to increase your chances of escaping unharmed.
The self-defence techniques we teach use the speed, weight and strength of the attacker against themselves, and because of this, they are suitable for all age group and size. Students learn how to use the minimum amount of effort for the maximum effect, so it doesn’t matter how big or strong the attacker is.
"It’s better to have and not need, than to need and not have" Fighting Fit, one of the leading martial arts school in South London and Surrey, offers a unique and practical self-defence system which has been developed by Tony Lloyd, 8 th degree black belt and master in many forms of the martial arts. Tony and his team of highly qualified instructors have provided self-defence training to police officers, the armed forces, security guards and even nuns. In fact one of his assistant instructors is a practising ‘priest’!! We can also provide tailor-made self defence and awareness courses for members of your family, that maybe travelling nationally or internationally, to give you peace of mind. Our self-defence system is part of the art of Seal Lung a unique, effective and easy to learn, mixed martial art. Seal Lung is the art of practical self defence and fitness. It incorporates anything that can work on the street, the home, in the martial arts school as well as keeping you in shape. If it works we incorporate it into the system.
