And here we are again ! February, the month of love. My 16th Wedding Anniversary is celebrated on the 14th, of course this wasn't done on purpose so that I don't forget my anniversaries ! This months issue is full of interesting and informative topics ranging from the current and severe flooding that the UK is experiencing, a focus on a awesome South African movie that was launched recently, Faan se Trein, as well as a host of other information. Hope you are spoiling the one you love this month !! Catch you laters !!!
Know Your Flood Risk is a campaign with a mission to raise awareness of the risk of flooding from all sources - not just from the river, sea, or a visible water course. The majority of flood insurance claims are for surface water flooding where there is no obvious water to alert a homeowner to the potential risk. Being flooded is an appalling experience. Know Your Flood Risk campaign provides essential practical guidance to enable homeowners and property professionals to mitigate against and prepare for the risk of being flooded. We have recently launched a property-specific flood report for homeowners to help identify the potential risk, as well as whether they will be able to obtain insurance at standard terms. By signing up to our campaign you will be joining a community of organisations whose goal is to raise awareness of flood risk. As a united voice, Know Your Flood Risk and its members aim to keep flooding high on everyone’s agenda and ensure homeowners and businesses are not only aware of the risks they face, but also how to mitigate them NEW Flood Recovery Guide – download free Mary Dhonau and Carly Rose have produced this new free guide to help victims of flooding through the initial stages of recovery, as well as the following months to come. The invaluable guide pulls together all the best practical advice for people who have been unfortunate enough to have been flooded. The information is presented in a clear and easy to understand format, designed to help everyone (whether insured or not) to cope and find a way forward during this awful time..
FLOOD RISK ADVICE: KNOW THE RISKS When faced with a flood or flood warning, it is important you have the right information to fully understand the risks, how to mitigate them and what to do in the event of a flood.
Who can assist during a flood? The Environment Agency is responsible for building, maintaining and operating flood defences and for issuing flood warnings to the public, other flood responding organisations and the media. The Environment Agency also provides the Floodline 0845 988 1188 service. You can listen to recorded information on flooding for your area or speak to an operator for advice 24 hours a day. * Floodline - sign up to Floodline Warnings Direct. * Floodline is also available in Scotland, coordinated by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). * Natural Resources Wales * The Police coordinate the emergency services when a major flood incident occurs and help with the evacuation of people from their homes where necessary. * The Fire & Rescue Service's main objective is to save lives and evacuate people to safety. Some local services provide water pumping to remove flood water. * The Citizens Advice Bureau can issue advice (in some circumstances) on how to obtain money in an emergency and what action to take around insurance. Contact information on your Bureau can be found in the phone book or on the Citizens Advice Bureau website. * Local Authorities work with the police, fire and rescue services and the Environment Agency to coordinate responses during severe flooding, issue advice to the local area about the incident and what action to take and organise rest centres for people evacuated from their homes and set up temporary shelters/accommodation for those people who have nowhere else they can go to. They will also address road closures and disruption to social services and investigate dame introduced by overflowing drains and sewers. Where resource and material are available, they may supply sandbags and/or other preventative materials. * The National Flood Forum is a national charity dedicated to supporting and representing communities and individuals at risk of flooding.

Ah, But Your Land is Beautiful is
set in the 1950s, the time of the Passive Resistance campaign, the Sophiatown removals, the emergence of the South African Liberal Party and the early stages of the Nationalist government in power. Revolving around the everyday experiences of a group of men and women whose lives reflect the human costs of maintaining a racially divided society, in a series of vivid and compelling episodes, Alan Paton examines what happens between people when such political events overtake their lives. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/164981.Ah_But_Your_Land_Is_Beautiful
Kaffir Boy: The True Story of a Black Youth's Coming of Age in Apartheid South Africa by Mark Mathabane Mark Mathabane was weaned on devastating poverty and schooled in the cruel streets of South Africa's most desperate ghetto, where bloody gang wars and midnight police raids were his rites of passage. Like every other child born in the hopelessness of apartheid, he learned to measure his life in days, not years. Yet Mark Mathabane, armed only with the courage of his family and a hard-won education, raised himself up from the squalor and humiliation to win a scholarship to an American university. This extraordinary memoir of life under apartheid is a triumph of the human spirit over hatred and unspeakable degradation. For Mark Mathabane did what no physically and psychologically battered "Kaffir" from the rat-infested alleys of Alexandra was supposed to do -- he escaped to tell about it. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/126151.Kaffir_Boy?from_search=true

It feels extraordinarily awesome and proud to wear a unique handmade jewelry piece you've designed yourself, isn't it? I remember, I used to make friendship bracelets for myself and all my friends in high school every year for Friendship's Day. My friends not only used to admire my art, but also kept them close to their heart. The best thing about knowing how to make jewelry is that it saves a lot of money, and gives a sense of uniqueness to everything you wear. After all, your designs and accessories speak of the person you are! Learning The Art of 'Ornamenting' Fashion jewelry trends have reached a level that one can wear anything and everything as an adornment. As weird as it may seem, I've seen many people wearing safety-pins and U-pins as earrings! Well, everyone has different styles of ornamenting themselves as creatively as they want. So, if the same rings a bell in your mind, even you can learn jewelry making. There are some easy jewelry making instructions you can follow in order to design your own jewelry items with the help of crystals, beads, and materials that can be reused. Following are some mind-blowing and extremely effortless examples in a low-budget, some of which may cost you nothing at all. Beaded Necklace Beads are the easiest and the most universal substance to make jewelry out of. Once you know the basics of making jewelry with beads, you can make beautiful and distinct beaded necklaces and bracelets in the most creative and innovative manner. In order to make one of those beaded necklaces in the picture here, you just need to assemble beads of different colors, shapes, and sizes. Use a strong thread, or a beading wire, and start creating crazy necklace styles and patterns. Make it long ,make it short, make it multicolored... it's bound to catch the eye! Beaded Bracelet This is one of the easiest jewelry you can make at home. A beaded candy colorful bracelet like this one can be made with a beading or elastic wire and lots of colorful beads. Start creating bracelet designs with beads in different sequences, and join both the ends by using a hook. You can also use a heartshaped bead like the one used here, and place it between the string of beads. These beaded bracelets go with anything and everything, and once you know how to make handmade beaded bracelets, you can wear them with both casual and formal attire. Button Earrings Create jewelry with stuff already present in your home. If you know how to make jewelry from recycled materials, no jewelrymaking job is difficult for you. You can create wonderful earrings with these colorful buttons. All you've got to do is get a couple of fish hooks, and buttons, attaching each hook to each button. You could also use metal loops to link more than one button, or use beads with buttons. Isn't it exciting? Now that you know how to make beaded jewelry, you can use the knack according to your whims and fancies.
Shell Necklace Many of us like to collect sea-shells while on a holiday to a beach. Guess what! Now you can use them as an adornment too. Get a beading wire, a strong fish hook, some pearls, and those beautiful shells you've collected from the beach. String all of them in sequence of your liking, and wear it with beautiful vintage dresses. You can also learn making hemp bracelet with shells in the same manner and wear them. Such jewelry items can be worn as adornments for beach parties.
Crystal Necklace Crystals are a marvelous option for jewelry as they can be worn as ornaments with almost everything you wear. Strikingly, crystal jewelry is extremely easy to make. You can assemble crystals of one or more colors, and using a beading wire, string all of them. Make sure you use a strong hook in order to link the ends. Other than a necklace, crystals can be used in infinite ways to make earrings and bracelets. You can also use crystals for anklets as they look beautiful with high heels. Anklets for women come in different designs and patterns, and highlight the beauty of their legs. Crystal jewelry looks extremely elegant and sophisticated, and you don't need to squander money to buy it too.
Gemstone Ring Gemstone jewelry may be one of the easiest jewelry to make, but is bound to look elegant and chic. In order to make it, you need a finger metal band, and a heart-shaped gemstone like the one displayed in the photo. Glue the stone onto the band with special glues for metals, and leave it for some time so that it adheres to the band properly. There you have a beautiful and eyecatching finger-ring made with minimal effort. Big finger rings can be a great choice when you don't want to look too overdone.
Just so you know, the most important thing in order to make jewelry is to apply your creativity because there are 'n' number of ways to make 'n' styles of jewelry. Now that you know some easy methods of making jewelry of different designs and patterns, start creating unique but beautiful jewelry adornments which give you an identity, thereby, symbolizing the creative person in you!

Bo-Kaap Cape Malay Kerrie
Ingredients:
Directions:
1 1/2 kg boneless mutton shoulder or 1 1/2 kg boneless lamb shoulder oil 4 onions, peeled and chopped 2 -4 garlic cloves, peeled and minced 1 piece fresh gingerroot, peeled and crushed 1 tablespoon cape malay curry powder or 1 tablespoon mild curry powder, of your choice 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon turmeric 1/4 teaspoon salt black pepper 1 cinnamon stick 3 cloves 2 bay leaves 2 carrots, peeled and diced 250 g dried apricots, soaked in warm water and drained 2 bananas, peeled and sliced 2 tablespoons tomato paste 50 ml wine vinegar 250 ml meat stock 3 tablespoons apricot jam 3 tablespoons natural yoghurt
1 Heat the oil in a large pot or saucepan. 2 Over high heat, fry the onions and garlic, stirring continuously. Add the ginger, curry powder and all the spices and continue stirring for a minute. Season to taste with pepper and add the salt. 3 Reduce heat slightly. Add the meat and fry it until it is browned on all sides. (This may be easier if you remove the onions, garlic and ginger mixture and set them aside, then return them to the pot after the meat is browned.). 4 Add the vinegar and stock, plus all the other remaining ingredients (except the apricot jam and yoghurt). Cover. Reduce heat. Simmer over a low heat, stirring occasionally, until everything is tender, approximately 1 1/2 hours for lamb and 2 hours for mutton, maybe a little longer. 5 Stir in the apricot jam and the yoghurt a few minutes before serving. 6 Serve this curry with yellow rice and a variety of sambals and atjars.
Ingredients: 1 cup sugar, reduce to 3/4 cup if you'd prefer it less sweet 1 cup water 1 cup lemon juice, freshly squeezed 1 handful raisins cold water and ice, so that you can dilute to taste Directions: 1. The secret to perfect lemonade is to make a simple syrup by dissolving the sugar in warm water so that it’s dispersed evenly instead of sinking to the bottom. So if you have a stove handy, heat the sugar and water in a small saucepan and stir until its completely dissolved; otherwise just stir very well. 2. Extract the juice from the lemons. I use my Granny’s juicer but you can do this anyway you like. 3. Pour the juice and sugar water into a jug, throw in the raisins and leave for a while, overnight if possible, to allow them to start fermenting and give it a fizz. 4. Before serving add about two cups of cold water and a bag of ice to the jug – more or less, depending on how strong you want it to be. If the lemonade is still a little sweet for anyone’s taste, chuck a slice or two of lemon into the glass.

New Study: Does Sugar Cause Heart Disease?
Are today’s high rates of overconsumption of sodas and other sugar sources a direct cause of heart disease? It’s possible, more and more people think so, and a new study gives this idea further support. Of course, today’s study only shows statistical associations. In this study, people who consumed large amounts of sugar, for example sodas, got heart disease more often. Correlation doesn’t prove causation, so this doesn’t mean that this study has proven what is cause and effect. However, this study did demonstrate a linear association: the more sugar the greater the risk. This study is just another piece of the puzzle, and more and more people are starting to see a clear picture, and taking the health hazards stemming from excessive sugar consumption seriously. Prof. Laura Schmidt at University of California San Francisco writes in a commentary in JAMA: “We are in the midst of a paradigm shift in research on the health effects of sugar, one fueled by extremely high rates of added sugar overconsumption in the American public”. Past concerns revolved around obesity and dental caries as the main health hazards. Overconsumption of added sugars has long been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, under the old paradigm, it was assumed to be a marker for unhealthy diet or obesity. The new paradigm views sugar overconsumption as an independent risk factor in CVD as well as many other chronic diseases, including diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis, and dementia—all linked to metabolic perturbations involving dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance. The new paradigm hypothesizes that sugar has adverse health effects above any purported role as “empty calories” promoting obesity. Too much sugar does not just make us fat; it can also make us sick. The fight against cigarettes has almost been won in the West. Now the fight against sugar is starting to get serious. The health benefits may be at least as great. http://www.dietdoctor.com/

Green is the new Pink
There are only three things in this life you can be certain of; death, tax and Irish Bar’s. Regardless of where you are in the world, there will inevitably be an Irish Bar just around the corner. This could be that either the Irish live all over the world or they simply like to drink and know how to throw a good party. Anyone who has visited such an establishment will agree it’s more than likely the latter. One such party that is celebrated around the world takes place on the 17 th of March every year. People gather in these bars dressed in green, often wearing ginger wigs and leprechaun outfits in order to help the Irish celebrate St Patrick’s Day. Known as the patron saint and the man who helped introduce Christianity to Ireland, Patrick is a very important gentleman and it is only fitting that he be celebrated accordingly. The 17 th
March is the anniversary of his death in 460 AD. For the full green experience Dublin is the city to head to. This usually vibrant city is bustling with a certain air of anticipation for all that is green. The culmination of this excitement is the The St Patrick’s Day Parade that takes place over a 2.7km route around the historic centre of Dublin with more than 500 000 spectators. There are colourful floats, marching bands from around the globe and Guinness is readily available. On St Patrick’s Day approximately 13 million pints of Guinness are consumed around the world. If you are keen to help the Irish celebrate, First Festival Travel has two St. Patricks Day Packages to choose from. You can meet us in Dublin and book onto our Accommodation Package or start the festivities early and get the coach from London up to Dublin. Either way you will have the services of our fantastic tour leaders who will show you how to party Dublin style, taking you to all the hot spots. Blitzbokke Dominate at the USA Sevens, Again! On Sunday, January 26, 2014, team South Africa made us all proud to be “bokke” when they beat New Zealand for the second year in a row to win the USA Sevens rugby tournament, gaining a 14-7 victory before an announced crowd of 68,608 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was South Africa’s third USA title in four years, and the Blitzbokke moved one point ahead of New Zealand into first place in the world standings. After a tough start where New Zealand took a 7-0 lead, South Africa evened the score at the end of the first half when Branco du Preez deftly handled a pass that hit the ground, picking up the ball and scoring a try. Without fear the Blitzbokke kept pushing and scored the winner midway through the second half when Cecil Afrika passed to Werner Kok for a try. Both teams were winded as the final minutes ticked down, but Las Vegas is a place where South Africa is comfortable, and perhaps the Blitzbokke’s success there gave them an advantage against the All Blacks. It was truly an amazing tournament where each team showcased their talent and pride, but no team hit home like the “blitzbokke” did. South Africans from both near and far joined to support their players and cheer alongside their fellow countrymen. There was a sense of comradery in the stadium this year that I had never felt before, South Africans everywhere were laughing together, cheering together, sharing biltong and droewors, and reminiscing about their hometowns. On behalf of all of us at the USA Expat Magazine, I would like to invite everyone to join in the festivities next year, make a trip out of it, and take the time to come and cheer on the best rugby team in the world! From America bokke, we want you to know that we are proud of you! Janie Raubenheimer
