Spring is in the air at the City of Marshall’s Brooks Nature Area. On Saturday, May 9, a Spring Open House is scheduled at the Brooks Nature Area from 1-4 p.m. Representatives will be on-site to provide guided hikes through the park and visitors are also welcome to explore on their own.

The 180-acre park has over two miles of established trails through restored native prairie and old-growth forested areas along with views of the adjacent Stuart Lake. Complimentary refreshments will be available at the trailhead on 18 ½ Mile Road.

This is a great opportunity to enjoy a spring afternoon at the

Brooks Nature Area.

To get to the nature area from downtown Marshall, follow Homer Road east to 18½ Mile Road. Take 18 ½ Mile Road south about ½ mile to the parking area on the west side of the road. For more information contact the Marshall Parks and Recreation Department at 269-781-5166.

Saturday, May 16, will mark the 26th running of the Oaklawn Hospital Hospitality Classic.

The event is run through the tree-lined streets of Marshall and begins at the Fountain Circle. A full slate of races – 10K & 5K runs, 5K May Walk (noncompetitive), and a Mile Fun Run – will get underway starting with the 10K at 7:30 a.m. The 5K events, which measure 3.1

miles, will begin at 9 a.m., and the final race, the Mile Fun Run, will have a 10 a.m. start.

Entry fees remain at $25 for adults ($20 if received by 5/11), $15 for students, and $55 for families. The fees include a commemorative t-shirt and refreshments.

Participants may pick up registration forms at the hospital or print out a form by going to

www.oaklawnhospital.org and clicking on the May 16th entry under “News & Events” in the middle of the home page. One can also sign up online by going to www.classicrace.com.

Volunteer Opportunities At the Michigan Theatre

Are you handy with tools? Do you need some pizzazz in your life? Then we need you! Jackson’s historic Michigan Theatre needs volunteers to help work on the building. Projects are planned for 2009 to restore smooth and ornamental plaster, rebuild wood doors and door casings, install new lights and mirrors in dressing rooms, install storm windows, assess the condition of the stage rigging system, help install steam heating system equipment, and perform many other jobs. Volunteers also help plan repair projects, raise funds for repairs, coordinate with contractors, work with other non-profits in the Jackson community, and get to meet many exciting movers and groovers.

No pay, but free soda pop and popcorn, and lots of pats on the back. Volunteer during the day, or on Saturday, or after work on Tuesday nights.
