The Grass Lake High football team did what coach Randy Cole doesn’t believe its done Jackson – The defense in quite some time — if ever exed some muscle, took — last Friday night against advantage of some mistakes, East Jackson. The Warriors and the oense did the rest. forced six fumbles and in turn, rolled to a 55-6 victory to improve to 2-1 on the season. “It was a good win,â€? Cole said “The defense created a lot of turnovers to give us some good ďŹ eld position. ‌ Six fumble recoveries was a lot. It certainly helped.â€? East Jackson actually got the scoring started when Nate Alexander returned the opening kick 81 yards for a touchdown. “I think that woke our guys up,â€? Cole said. “We just weren’t ready to go. We didn’t get the job done and we found ourselves down 6-0. At the same time, you can’t get real upset about something like that. I mean, East Jackson made a good block to get him free, and we had some guys out of position. But we had to bounce back.â€? Grass Lake would. On the ensuing possession, Danny Vuocolo scored on a 9-yard run to even the game at 6-6. The extra point would
serve as the game winner. Before the ďŹ rst quarter was out, Grass Lake was back in the end zone four more times and led 35-6. Luke Coppernol scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter, on a 20yard run in the third, and Joe Vuocolo capped the scoring in the fourth on a 30-yard run. “I thought we played preďż˝y well,â€? Cole added. “East Jackson is in a tough spot without many guys. They are building things back up, which you love to see. But I thought we played a strong game.â€? Kyle Farley completed 14-of-21 passes for Grass Lake for 163 yards and one touchdown. Andrew Ryan had four catches for 58 yards, while Brandon Sherwood had two catches for 54 yards and a score. Coppernoll ďŹ nished with 109 yards rushing on eight caries and two touchdowns, while Joe Vuocolo had 39 yards and two scores on 10 carries. Danny Vuocolo added 38 yards and two scores on seven carries. Farley had 36 yards on two carries and one touchdown. Grass Lake now has to deal with Manchester (2-1) in this
weekend’s rivalry meeting. “It’s always a big game, and we know that,â€? Cole said. “That’s a very good team with a lot of good players on oense and tough on defense. The key for us is ďŹ nding a way to slow down their rushing aďż˝ack.â€? East Jackson coach Tra Coolbaugh was contacted for this story, but declined to comment on the game.

The candidate we are looking for must enjoy meeting new people, have a professional appearance, reliable transportation, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be able to handle details and organization and enjoy a challenge. Concord – A 32-point deficit was nearly erased. An unthinkable win, nearly had. But in the end, Max Clark took last Friday’s 30-32 setback to Homer as a way to educate his guys, a lesson to be learned, so to speak. “It was a good opportunity to learn, really,” Clark said of the loss. “There was a lot going into this game. We were 2-0. We were the game of the week, with JTV and some news channels and a tailgate. I think we were too bigheaded for a short time, and it really got to us.” In a six-minute span in the second quarter, Homer scored four touchdowns to take a 32-0 lead into halime. “Originally, I went in calm and cool,” Clark said of the halime break. “I think we were pointing too many fingers and guys were mad and blaming everyone else. I reminded them the work we put in, the team building we’d done. I sent my message and I walked out. They came together and came out motivated.” Dauvier Whetstone got Concord on the board, scoring on a 9-yard run. The 2-pt conversion make it 32-8 aer three quarters. In the fourth, Chase Hinkle scored on an 18-yard run just 50 seconds in to make it 32-14, Cole Phebus scored on a 3-yard run with 6:27 to play to make it 32-22. Then came, what may be, the play of the year. The Concord defense forced
a Homer punt with roughly 4:40 to play in regulation. The kick bounced and rolled down to the Concord 15 yard line, where a host of Homer players surrounded it. Hinkle was also there, and aer waiting a few seconds decided to pick the ball up and run. Some 85-yards later he was in the end zone and Concord trailed 30-32. “At first, I started to watch, then turned away, then I see him pick it up and go,” Clark said of the play, admiing it’s the kind of decision that can drive coaches crazy. “It’s hard to be mad at a kid that makes great plays like that. Sometimes you have to take a deep breath and remember playmakers are going to make plays. We’ll take that one. It was clutch.” Concord got the ball back once more, and drove down inside the Homer 40 before running out of time. “Disappointing,” Clark said of the loss. “But in the grand scheme of things, I think great teams need to be humbled sometimes. I think we learned that lesson Friday night. … To come back the way we did is what we’re going to build on. They didn’t quit. They played with a lot of grit.” For Homer, Caleb Drumm finished 9-for-18 passing for 182 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. Adam Boyd had three catches for 100 yards and a touchdown, Payton Schrader caught two touchdowns and Hunter Wilson had 13 carries for 46 yards.

Flavorful sides for the win (Family Features) Much like a star quarterback, grilled foods get all the glory when it comes to tailgating, but the often overlooked side dishes are the supporting players that help drive your menu to victory. Whether you’re tailgating in the parking lot or hosting a “homegate” in the backyard, plan a well-rounded menu with a wide range of sides. To be sure your sides and apps get the play time they deserve, rely on bold flavors that keep guests coming back for more. These tips from the makers of Tabasco Sauce will help create a flavor-rich spread that makes you the fan favorite. • Stay ahead of the game. Plan ahead by prepping appetizers and chilling drinks
beforehand. This allows plenty of time for the ingredients to blend and develop perfect crowd-pleasing flavors. • Change up your lineup. Upgrade traditional tailgate fare with healthier and tastier versions. This Cajun Country Caviar is a delicious take on a tasty tailgate dip that incorporates protein and fresh, seasonal vegetables. Then take it up a notch with some Tabasco Original Red Sauce to make sure it’s the MVP of the party. • Make a pass on budget, not flavor. Inexpensive cuts of meat, such as drumsticks, flank steak and brisket, can make for delicious football fare. Be sure to season well and offer variety of flavor combinations to really impress.
• Give veggies some play time. Skip the side salad and throw your favorite veggies, such as corn, zucchini and lettuce, on the grill. The uniquely smoky flavors from the grill can transform everyday basics into applause-worthy apps in minutes. For more ideas to heat up your menu, visit www.tabasco.com.

Can we calm America’s road rage? Wellness expert explains why we all need to take a deep breath
Oen it’s frightening. Sometimes it’s deadly. Road rage – where flaring tempers mix with two-ton machines – continues to be a problem on America’s highways, leading to accidents, assaults and occasionally even murder. It’s a perplexing problem in part because it can happen at anytime and anywhere that roads and vehicles are involved, yet specific statistics on its frequency are hard to come by. All that aside, though, there are solutions that can at least reduce the number of road-rage incidents. People who are easily angered by slower drivers, detours and other traffic disruptions can be taught to be more aware of their responses and modify them to reduce accident risks, according to research published this year by the Society for Risk Analysis. That let’s-calm-down approach is applauded by Sco
Morofsky, author of the books “The Daily Breath: Transform Your Life One Breath at a Time” and “Wellativity: In-Powering Wellness Through Communication” (www.Wellativity.com). “Sometimes there’s this tendency to throw on the brakes when someone is tailgating us, or use an obscene gesture at an aggressive driver,” says Morofsky, who developed the concept of Wellativity, which helps people address any behavior that inhibits wellness. “But when you encounter an aggressive driver, you don’t want to engage them or do anything to further agitate them.” What are some of our behaviors that can aggravate other drivers? The No. 1 culprit is drivers who are texting, according to a 2015 Road Rage Report by Expedia.com, the travel site. Those texting drivers upset 26 percent of us. Other offenders, in descend-

ing order, are tailgaters, lelane hogs, slow drivers and drivers multi-tasking. Of course, those examples represent situations that can raise your ire aer you are behind the wheel. Oen, the foundation for fury on the highway was laid before you got into the car. Maybe you had an argument with someone earlier. Maybe you are stressed because you are running late for an appointment. “Probably all of us at some time have been angry and someone wisely told us to take a deep breath,” Morofsky says. “That’s actually good advice because breathing and taking in oxygen plays an important role in every area of our health and well-being.” Morofsky offers these tips for heading off your own road rage or avoiding the rage of others: • Don’t turn that ignition.

Get a grip before you start the car, Morofsky says. Take that deep breath you always heard would work. You might even try counting from one to 10, inhaling on one, exhaling on two, up to 10 and back to one again. “You want to be relaxed before you head

out,” he says. • Stop right there. If you are already driving, and you feel your anger is starting to impact your judgment, pull over for a few moments. “Breathe and ask yourself, is my problem important enough to risk lives?” he says. “Taking a few conscious breaths could prevent a catastrophe.” • Don’t react or retaliate. You can’t control those other
drivers, but you can control how you react to them. If someone is tailgating you, flipped you off or is just infuriating you with bad driving habits, ignore them, Morofsky says. Engaging in some sort of roadrage argument will just further raise your blood pressure, and could prove dangerous in some circumstances. This is just one more opportunity to take that deep breath, he says.

KCC Board suspends presidential search The Kellogg Community College Board of Trustees announced that it is suspending its search for a new KCC president for at least 12 months. In a prepared statement, Board Chairman Steve Claywell said he and the other trustees have noted that Interim President Mark O’Connell has done an excellent job in the position since March. Also, Claywell said, this is not the time, given the College’s declining enrollment and tight budget, to devote the resources required for a national search. “We have heard from KCC employees and community members who are noticing, just as we are, the many positive changes occurring at the College under Mr. O’Connell’s -Hunting-

The Board published a request-for-proposal document in June and received three proposals from search firms over the summer. Trustees reviewed those proposals during a meeting Sept. 10. Homer Historical Society will unveil new barn at Fall Festival This is the 40th annual Fall Festival organized by the Homer Historical Society at Blair Historical Farm, 26445 M-60 East in Homer, but it is also a first because this is the first year visitors will be able to see displays of farm machinery and tools in the recently erected display barn. The festival date is Saturday, September 26 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is no admission charge, and parking is free. “The barn will showcase the Birdsell clover huller, an International Harvester threshing machine, and some smaller farm equipment that
we have not been able to display before because we didn’t have the space,” said Homer Historical Society president Bruce Miller. The new 40 by 64-foot barn has been the long time dream of many Historical Society members. When John Pardee of Concord donated a 30-feet long, 10 feet tall eyecatching Birdsell clover huller in 2013, plans had to be made for preserving and displaying it. The new barn is the result. This machine was manufactured in the late 1800s and Pardee owned it for 55 years. John C. Birdsell invented the clover huller in West Henriet-
ta, New York and patented it in 1855. Using Birdsell’s time and labor saving machine, farmers could separate the clover heads from their stems, extract the seeds, and clean the seeds to prepare them for the next year’s crop, a job that formerly took separate threshing machines and hulling machines often working side-by-side. Clover was a very important crop when horses were used to pull plows and drive other farm machinery. Clover plants provided hay for the horses, and clover seeds were raised and sold to other farmers. “Coming Home” was a
natural theme choice for this year’s Fall Festival according to Dee Camp, the organization’s secretary. “The Fall Festival is like a reunion where people can get together, see friends and relatives, share their interest in historical collections and have a good time,” she said. There will be an open fire campfire cooking demonstration, and “We have people doing things, old time things that people don’t do any more,” said Mary Berry, the Society’s vice president. Richard and Sandy Hennings from Branch County will have a Lewis and

Clark expedition display this year featuring typical items like hand tools, clothing, hardtack and other things necessary for the trip that began in 1804 going from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, the first expedition to cross the western part of the United States. “There are a lot of festivals, but there’s not one like this on every corner. We have the Blair family farm home people can go through and other buildings like the former Albion Town Hall that was built in 1890, moved to the farm site in 2006, restored and used for displays people can come see.” Berry said. There is also the old Grover railroad station and the Robert Ackley saw mill. The farm which was donated to the Historical Society by its owner Maude Blair in 1974 shortly after the organization was formed. Her parents built the house, replacing a log cabin on the property. She and her sister Bessie Blair were born there in 1880 and 1877 respectively. Her grandfather Dr. George W. Blair came to Homer in 1836 and was the town’s first medical doctor. He purchased the property in 1851. “It’s a great place to be, lots of people, things to see, educational things, and of course the music is wonderful,” said
Barbara Borton referring to the Homespun Strings group that plays near the food tent from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Uncle Carl’s Dulcimer Club that plays there from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Both talented groups have performed at the festival for many years. Uncle Carl’s Dulcimer Club, organized by the late Carl Hakes who was a talented dulcimer player and woodworker who demonstrated his dulcimer-making expertise at Greenfield Village, celebrated its 32nd anniversary this year. Bratwurst sandwiches, hot dogs, harvest soup, baked beans and many varieties of pie will be sold in the food tent. Corn pancakes made on a wood burning cook stove are a festival mainstay along with Blair Farm apple buer. A large horse-drawn wagon will take young and old on rides through the woods, and area crafters will sell handmade goods and garden items. The Fall Festival is the Historical Society’s major fund raising. Proceeds and donations from it support the construction of the new display barn and other historical preservation and restoration work. For more information about the Fall Festival or the Homer Historical Society contact JoAnne Miller, 517-568-3116.

Marshall football team shakes off rust, dominates Parma Western 41-13

By MIKE MOORE Staff Writer Pushed around and trailing aer 12 minutes of football, Jason Stealy and his Marshall High football team knew they had to shake off some rust, or wake up, or both, in last Friday’s road game at Parma Western. “Maybe we were a lile too amped up. I don’t know,” Stealy said of his guys, who were geing pushed around and trailed 0-6 aer the first quarter. “Once we seled down and we started doing what we planned,
we were able to do some different things that worked out.” And worked well. Marshall responded with 14 points in the second quarter, and then four consecutive touchdowns in the third for a 41-13 victory. “Very nice win,” Stealy said simply. “That’s a tough team we found a way to beat.” The Redhawks held the ball for only about three minutes the entire first quarter as the defense got pushed back and the offense couldn’t sele in. But on the first play of the second quarter Forrest Jackson scampered 45 yards to tie the game and wake Marshall up. Chris Thomas hauled in a 33-yard fade route for a touchdown with 33 seconds to play in the second and the Redhawks took a 14-6 lead into halime. The third quarter was even, back and forth, for the first five minutes. But then things got straight-up whacky. Marshall was driving and set to score when a fumble negated any hopes of that. But on the very next play, the Redhawks defense forced a fumble and Sean Kent recovered it for a touchdown. Aer the kickoff, Western fumbled on its next play, and shortly aer, Jackson scored on a 29-yard run. Jackson added another score from 45 yards out and one more from 15 yards outs to cap a streak of
four Marshall touchdowns in less than seven minutes. “To get that defensive touchdown on the very next play aer fumbling was huge,” Stealy said. “We took the momentum and ran with it. It was nice to see our defense step up and make some big plays.” Marshall scored once more with just 1:28 to play, but the game was long over by then, thanks in large part to Jackson and his 261 yards rushing and four scores on 19 carries. “He was seeing the field really well,” Stealy said. “We’ve seen glimpses of that from practice and last year. He was able to break some tackles and then use his speed to make a big gain out of it.” Brad Heidenreich completed 2-of-4 passes for 38 yards and the one touchdown. Cam Face had two catches and 42 yards, including one on a 35-yard trick pass from Thomas. Western’s Austen Cooper completed 8 of 13 passes for 109 yards and had 45 rushing yards on 17 aempts and one touchdown, while Steele Fortress added a 2-yard touchdown in the fourth. Connnor Maynard scored the extra point, and Jacob Lefevre had five catches for 79 yards.
