Venturefest North West 2018 demonstrates region’s continuing track record for innovation AROUND a thousand people attended this year’s Venturefest North West 2018, providing further evidence of the region’s place as a leading centre for innovation. The event, the biggest in five years, was held at Manchester Central and was organised by GC Business Growth Hub, part of The Growth Company. Former Altrincham Grammar School pupil Priya Lakhani OBE hosted the event and highlighted in her opening remarks that start-ups, scale-ups and SMEs are the businesses best-placed to innovate. The founder of CENTURY Tech went on to say that innovation is a mindset, and that in her opinion, businesses can fail because they aren’t committed to solving customer issues. Priya’s speech was followed by a presentation by Jenny
Tooth OBE, CEO of UK Business Angels Association. Jenny outlined her background as an angel investor and explained to businesses looking for investment how the angel investment market worked. Mike Anderson, CEO of Padoq, and founder of digital agency Nothing But Epic, was the final speaker of the morning session. He told delegates that winning the Innovation Showcase competition at Venturefest 2016 was key to the success of the Padoq concept. At the centre of this year’s event was the annual Innovation Showcase Competition, which was open to start-up and scale-up businesses from across the region. Twelve companies had been shortlisted from more than 170 entries across four categories, Product Innovation,

New report shows Manchester – Beijing service is major catalyst for the Northern economy THE North of England is reaping the rewards of its ever-stronger ties with China, according to recent research released. Driven by two years of direct flights between Manchester Airport and Beijing, levels of growth in trade, tourism and knowledge exchange between the North and the Far East are outstripping national averages. This “golden era” of relations between the North and China was revealed in an independent study launched at the British Embassy in Beijing by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham. “The China Dividend: Two Years In” has tracked the economic, social and cultural benefits that have been felt across the North in the two years since direct flights began. Mr Burnham launched the report ahead of participating in the World Economic Forum, in Tianjin, where he met with global leaders on a range of subjects, including smart cities, healthcare and green manufacturing. He said: “Greater
Manchester has an ambition to sit at the heart of a productive, culturally rich and internationally competitive Northern economy. “To do that, it is vital the North has strong connections with highgrowth markets like China, which we have been working hard to develop over the past five years. “Central to our ambitions are direct air links, and the China Dividend study demonstrates that good connectivity is not just about getting people and products from A to B, but the wider impacts that they have on so many aspects of peoples’ lives at both ends of the route.” The report was launched at an event hosted by Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for China, Richard Burn, who said: “UK-China bilateral trade links have never been stronger. In 2017, UK-China bilateral trade expanded by 15.1% to reach a record £67.5bn, whilst UK exports of goods and services to China grew by 28.5%. Manchester Airport CEO Andrew Cowan, said: “This is important research because it demonstrates the power of direct connectivity to fast-growing economies like China. “While people could always travel to China by transferring at other airports, we were clear in our minds that securing a non-stop service would unlock a wide range of benefits for our city and the wider North. “SDG’s study shows that this has proven to be the case, with the route serving as a catalyst for significant increases in trade and investment, tourism and academic collaboration.” for facilitating flows of has been a surge in The China Dividend trade, investment and the number of worldreport predicts rapid people between our two leading academics growth in demand for countries. WaterAid appoints Manchester agency as global web development partner MANCHESTER based creative and digital agency Access has been appointed by international nonprofit organisation, WaterAid, as its global web development partner. The appointment follows a competitive four-way pitch for both the charity’s ongoing platform support and future digital design, development and project work, including the growth of its current digital portfolio from seven member sites and three country sites to more than 40 sites and nine microsites in the next three years. Access was awarded both areas of work based on its Drupal development expertise and track record of creating highly engaging digital experiences. Operating across 35 countries, WaterAid helps transform lives by getting water, toilets and hygiene to people living without these basic human rights. It was established in 1981 by the UK water industry before becoming an independent charity, and has so far reached 25.8 million people with clean water and 25.1 million with decent toilets. As its global web development partner, Access will be responsible for the development, governance and deployment of all websites and microsites across the
entire global operation, working towards WaterAid’s ambition for everyone, everywhere to have clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene by 2030. The agency will also expand WaterAid’s current Drupal websites, adding more country sites and a range of microsites, and further develop the WASH Matters site, which provides reports, research and insight to the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector. Temina Milovanovic, Digital Marketing & Product Lead for WaterAid, said: “Our digital platform is a core element of our entire global operation, communicating the vital work we’re doing as well as facilitating ongoing fundraising from all around the world. “We launched a new Drupal website in the UK in 2017 and more Drupal sites are now being rolled out for the countries in which we work. The next phase is to further enhance the performance of the website, and develop new features that will bring our supporters closer to our work. “User experience is a fundamental element of our digital performance, making it as easy as possible to take action and see the results of their support. Access’ best practice UX and development
capabilities were a key factor in our agency choice. “Continued investment in our digital capabilities will ensure we maintain the high levels of support we provide to those most in need, garnering support from both consumers and businesses to either participate in our events or volunteer.” “Access demonstrated exceptional experience and expertise in Drupal web development. This was coupled with their flexible and versatile approach, important for our organisation’s culture and structure.” Simon Landi, Managing Director of Access, added: “Working alongside Acquia, we will provide a holistic approach to developing and maintaining the web platform’s architecture and integrity. We’ve already completed a technical audit of the site and will commence our wider support with immediate effect. We also have a number of broader projects in plan to help to improve the site performance, conversion and achieve WaterAid’s long term digital ambitions. “This is an exciting win for the agency and we are looking forward to working with WaterAid to further raise their standards across their digital portfolio.”
Northcoders launches Introduction to Programming course MANCHESTER headquartered Northcoders, the coding bootcamp for the North, is making the tech sector even more accessible with the launch of its brand new Introduction to Programming course. The course has been created for absolute beginners and for anyone who is considering a possible career in coding. Its aim is to provide an accessible platform where people can explore if coding could be right for them via a mixture of short tutor-led sessions and project-based workshops. The first evening course will be taking place in October at Northcoders’ city centre campus in Federation House. Tutors will introduce new concepts, and then students will have the chance to put them into
practice and explore the ideas they’ve just covered. The course isn’t about building websites, it’s about beginning to understand the languages which underpin technologies as wide ranging as AI,
blockchain or the apps you use on your phone. It also lays the foundations of how to build complex websites, or becoming a software developer. Chris Hill, co-founder of Northcoders, said: “A lot of people think about coding and programming as a potential career but are unsure about what it entails and how to get started. Graduates from our main Developer Pathway course come from all sorts of industries including retail, recruitment and marketing as well as university graduates and those returning to work after having children. They often tell us that making the first step is the hardest, so we want Introduction to Programming to answer those questions and ultimately inspire the programmers of the future.”

Cabinet Office renews emergency response contract with UKFast FOLLOWING an open tender competition through the Digital Marketplace, the Cabinet Office has signed a renewed contract with UKFast’s public sector department for the delivery of a private cloud platform for ResilienceDirect, which supports effective response to incidents like natural disasters, terror attacks and power outages. The secure platform delivers a suite of capabilities to prepare, exercise, respond and recover, supporting a co-ordinated and efficient response linking the national tier Government Departments, COBRA and the local emergency services, working collaboratively with local councils, utility providers and many other sectors. The British hosting firm won the initial twoyear contact in 2016 and the extension gives the Cabinet Office access to UKFast’s industry leading government hosting services and round-the-clock support for another year, with the option of a further year’s extension. Luana Avagliano, head of ResilienceDirect, said: “UKFast won the contract by being open, honest and proactive. The team are excellent at exploring how to maximise private cloud to make sure we are getting
value for money. “UKFast is a truly innovative company and delivers solutions to the challenges we face. Disaster recovery, for example, is expensive but we need to have that capability to allow failover. UKFast not only provides gold standard disaster recovery but our dedicated team is constantly rechecking infrastructure, security and assurances. “We have to be as secure as anyone can possibly be UKFast is the best in their league and really help to keep the UK safe.” More than 36,000 users are currently registered on the platform, spread across more than 3,500 organisations. ResilienceDirect needed a solution to provide the scalability to cope with a huge spike in users logging onto the platform and sharing vast
amounts of data during an emergency situation. Steve Jewell, head of UKFast Public Sector, said: “It’s a huge honour to be given this renewed responsibility and to continue to support the government on such a critical project. It’s testament to the huge investment we’ve put into UKFast’s public sector capability in recent years. “We have developed a fantastic partnership with the ResilienceDirect team and know their systems well. By working closely with the whole network of co-suppliers, we are able to support the whole resilience community.” UKFast CEO Lawrence Jones added: “The government is doing incredible work to bring in more sophisticated systems in the face of modernday terrorism and an ever-evolving list of threats. Using a cutting-edge cloud platform is the natural way to do that. “We’re ensuring the government knows there is a British cloud option aligned to the needs of the people of this country. Government needs to know where its data is and values having people at the end of a telephone day and night to support them when they need it most.”
Football referees will soon be using satellites and virtual reality to put themselves in players boots VAR was undoubtedly the big talking point of this year’s World Cup tournament in Russia but the future for the professional game will be much more about virtual reality, according to sports technology experts. “In four to five-years-time, professional football could be using satellite tracking to create fully immersive VAR for referees, meaning they could become the player at the centre of any chosen incident in a virtual sense,” said Dave Horrocks, a world-renowned sports researcher and senior lecturer in football coaching and analytics at the University Campus of Football Business (UCFB) in Manchester. “In effect, it means referees will have the technology to virtually become a goalkeeper and face the corner that’s just happened on the pitch to truly see a particular incident of play from virtually any angle.” The satellite VR system called Mi Hiepa is already in use for players and is used to assess their actions
throughout training, in order to improve their performance on match days. The tracking system is called Trac Ab and is used at most of the top stadiums around the world by the elite football clubs in the major football leagues. Dave, who lectures students at UCFB Etihad Campus in Manchester and is considered one of the leading sports researchers in the UK, said it is already being developed to become the next iteration of the VAR system: “It will enable the referee to put himself in Neymar’s shoes and know, without any element of doubt, whether he has been kicked or fouled or not. That means the decision he makes will not have any margin for error and will be as accurate as if he had been the player involved in the incident.” Dave believes the current VAR system will borrow ideas from the American NFL, where coaches are allowed a set number of challenges to decisions per game, and will likely
roll out in the English Premier League and other elite leagues next season. He said: “The use of VAR during this summer’s World Cup was very much a trial. There will now be a review of the system to assess whether it was a success or not. If it is deemed a success, which I imagine it will be, I’d expect VAR to be rolled out in the Champions League and Europa League first, before then going into full-time use in the Premier League, Serie A and other elite leagues the following season. “I’d expect VAR to be in use in the Premier League by next season or the season after.” In NFL matches, coaches can challenge decisions three times in each half of the game. The bench and the coaches also have a live feed of the game and, within seconds of an in-game incident occurring, can see exactly what has happened on their monitor. That means any challenge
from the bench is based on more accurate information and images and, in theory, should stop coaches challenging all and any VAR decision frivolously. In NFL, the referee also has to explain their decision, which stops much of the time-consuming debate between the team being penalised and the referee. Dave added: “I imagine we will see a similar rule change in the Premier League before full adoption of VAR in the professional game. Right now Premier League bosses will likely be debating how VAR can be improved to ensure accuracy of decision-making by the referee but also to ensure as little interference in the course of play as possible.”

Vodafone UK conducts first holographic call using 5G VODAFONE has conducted a live, holographic call as part of the company’s 5G trials. The call, conducted between Vodafone’s offices in Manchester and Newbury is the first of its kind in the UK, and forms part of Vodafone’s ongoing testing of new 5G technology. Manchester City and England Women’s Captain, Steph Houghton MBE, stationed in Manchester, interacted in a 3D, real-time communication with Vodafone Enterprise Director, Anne Sheehan, in Newbury. This gives a glimpse of what advances in network and technology could bring to our lives in the future. Also taking part in the conversation was Manchester City and Lionesses fan Iris, 11, from Surrey. Iris’s dream of being in the same room as her idol was realised through the power of 5G and the use of a HoloLens virtual reality headset, despite being over a 190 miles away. The exchange demonstrated the exciting possibilities that such technology can bring to sport, including remote coaching and training as well as the ability to bring fans closer to their idols. The call follows Vodafone’s successful first test of 5G spectrum across a live network in April 2018 and gives an early indication of how advances in technology can transform our lives in the future. The power of super-low latency 5G could enable a range of life-changing applications, from a surgeon remotely joining a theatre from Manchester to advise on a patient’s
condition in Birmingham, to a technician with a virtual reality headset advising on the fix of critical infrastructure, to 4K gaming on the move. 5G significantly reduces the time it takes for data to be sent and received. This will help eliminate the motion sickness many people experience when using today’s VR headsets. Commenting on the ground breaking call, Vodafone’s Chief Technology Officer Scott Petty, said: “We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to prepare for 5G with a multi-billion pound investment in new fibre infrastructure and technology. I can confirm that we are ready and good to go with UK-wide city and rural 5G trials starting from next month.” The holographic moment took place during Vodafone’s ‘Future Ready’ conference in front of a live audience. Football captain Steph Houghton MBE, who dialled in as a hologram from Manchester, added: “It was fantastic to see first-hand the opportunities 5G could bring. As a player, one of the most exciting benefits of 5G is the ability to bring us closer to our fans no matter where they are, allowing us to interact with them remotely in real-time. When I’m playing abroad with Manchester City and England, this technology will also make it even easier to stay connected with everyone back home. To communicate in 3D, in real time and with no delay or interruption is an unbelievable experience.”
Air Bnb for dogs launches in Manchester HOUSEMYDOG, the online service that matches dog owners with suitable, hand-picked sitters and walkers, has launched in Manchester. HouseMyDog expects to create up to 4,500 paid dog sitter/walker jobs across Greater Manchester over the next two years. HouseMyDog works much like Airbnb, allowing dog owners to search vetted and reliable dog sitters and dog walkers in their area. They can then message and book securely through the website or app and travel relaxed knowing their dog will be covered with veterinary care, 24/7 support as well as photo and message updates with every booking. All HouseMyDog sitters and walkers are thoroughly vetted by HouseMyDog and dog owners can also view full profiles, photos and reviews from other dog owners for each dog sitter or walker. HouseMyDog is the brainchild of brothers Timothy and James McElroy, who spotted a gap in the sector for this type of service when they struggled to find a sitter for their pet dog Holly. Since 2015, HouseMyDog has grown from a small community in Dublin to over 30 cities throughout Ireland, the
UK, and Germany. Timothy McElroy, said: “We’re a nation of animal lovers , in the UK, over 56% of households are pet owners and pets are very much key members of our family. Naturally, owners want the very best possible care for their dogs. They are now demanding more choice and trust and want their pooch to have their own holiday too, somewhere fun, safe and where they will be treated like a member of the family. “With over a quarter of households in Manchester having a dog as a pet, (27%), Manchester is the natural choice for the next stage of our expansion. Our own in-depth research estimates over £350 million is spent on the 365,000 dogs in Manchester each year. With new technology in the pet care sector set to increase frequency of bookings, we estimate there is room for up to 4,500 additional dog sitters and walkers over the next couple of years, allowing people to earn money while doing something they really enjoy. Equally, owners have peace of mind over their pet’s care. We’re really excited to be bringing HouseMyDog to the city and wider Greater Manchester region.”

Tech Startup inspires students with 3D printers for Schools A TECH startup on a mission to encourage more students into STEM careers has delivered the first of its 3D printers into schools, in partnership with technology firm Cisco. Manchester-based, Dicey Tech has designed, developed and built bespoke 3D printers using 3D printed components. The hardware firm’s machine is available to educational institutions for £1,500, half that of similar 3D printers currently on the market. The company aims to inspire secondary school pupils into technology by using 3D printing to teach design and coding and increase the number of students taking up careers within industries including architecture, engineering, aerospace and construction. Dicey Tech joined Tech Manchester to help accelerate its business. The not-forprofit initiative, based at UKFast Campus, pairs tech startups with established entrepreneurs to foster a mentoring relationship. Dicey Tech Co-founder Alex Alexandrescu, said: “We know that schools are chronically underfunded, so it was imperative to keep costs down. Up to 40 per cent of the materials used within the printer are 3D printed. The other components are high-end as the machines need to be durable, reliant and efficient. “We have delivered our first two 3D printers to schools in Greater Manchester following sponsorship from Cisco. The feedback has been fantastic, students are intrigued and it enables them to learn how to test, iterate and fail, which are crucial skills in product development and innovation.” Founded by three University of Manchester graduates, Alex Alexandrescu,
Sofiane Bebert and Adrian Pop, Dicey Tech run workshops for secondary school pupils to teach both soft and technical skills, encouraging interest in STEM careers and plugging the tech skills gap. The trio are also developing an educational platform to deliver all the learning and content resources teachers need to master 3D printing and incorporate it into classrooms across the UK. Alexandrescu, added: “We want to create a robust pipeline for companies to hire apprentices and create work experience opportunities. It’s no
longer necessary to go to university to learn skills to propel a career in tech. By bringing schools and businesses together it is possible to create a highly-skilled talent pipeline.” Tech Manchester project lead Patricia Keating, commented: “It’s fantastic to aid in the growth and development of this exciting hardware startup. The company was founded as a result of the fortuitous meeting of three international students and the fact that they have chosen Manchester as a base to develop their business is credit to the world-class tech ecosystem in the city.”

Sigma appointed to build mobile app for world renowned horse breeder
USER EXPERIENCE agency, Sigma, has been appointed by Juddmonte Farms, one of the world’s leading breeders of elite racehorses, to build a userfriendly mobile application that will make it easier for staff across the company’s estate to manage the movement of horses from one location to another. Not only is livestock tracking a legal requirement, but the data collected by the app will also improve Juddmonte’s ability to understand each individual horse’s movements and correlate them with performance or health. The new platform will also provide admin support, freeing up stud managers and grooms to better care for the animals. With properties in the UK, Ireland and the USA, Juddmonte has bred over 100 individual top-level winners, including world champion racehorse Frankel. The new app will provide staff with real-time data on horse locations, helping to make work more efficient and allow staff to focus on the management of the animals in their care. The appointment follows a successful discovery project in 2017, in which Sigma’s specialist team looked at the feasibility of delivering an app to allow staff working at Juddmonte stud farms to schedule, record and verify the movement of horses. This included detailed research, design and testing concepts, resulting in a high-fidelity prototype.
This new brief calls on Sigma to deliver a working version of the prototype and will include the development of an application programming interface (API) to integrate with existing Juddmonte systems. The project will see the agency’s team finalise the app’s design and development, before completing a full training handover with Juddmonte’s staff. Simon Wissink, account manager at Sigma, said: “It’s great when clients are so impressed with our work that they come back to us to implement the next stage of the project. This is particularly true for Juddmonte which has inherently high standards and requires top-level detail to ensure its horses are successful. App design is something that we pride ourselves on, so we can’t wait to get started. Ben Coppins, head of IT at Juddmonte, said: “It was clear early on that Juddmonte and Sigma were very well matched, and I was delighted we were able to capitalise on the relationships built during the discovery project and use Sigma again for the resulting development work. “I set great store in projects like this being enjoyable and rewarding, it gets the best out of everyone involved, and that’s certainly the case here. Sigma has proved itself on both the creative and technical fronts, and I hope we have the opportunity to work together again soon.”

experience and they found it really valuable. “We hosted five students and gave them a variety of projects to work on including how likely a case was to be successful, using everything from population and geographic information to age, enquiry information, client data and generic information from population demographics and the Post Office. "Much of the work the students did involved crunching mass amounts of data to build models to predict outcomes of cases for clients based on their unique circumstances. “The data they helped to collect
will enable us to give far more clarity to the client about their journey, likelihood of success, how long the case might take, what it might cost but also how much compensation is likely. All of this helps a client understand and be more aware and involved in the progression of their case. Our data management vision is to reduce costs, deliver better customer outcomes and improve efficiency. “Preserving client confidentiality and privacy is our top priority, so the students were tasked with analysing anonymised data trends and publicly available information from sources such as the census, government
studies and research papers to build up detailed computer models. We’ll be able to use these to predict various things such as the chances of case successes.” Placements were organised by Eden Smith under its Nurture initiative. Lucy Lynch, head of graduate programs at the firm, said: “Being able to have real experience in the world of work makes a huge difference to a student. When they finish their studies, to be able to go out and say they’ve worked with a large firm like Slater and Gordon looks great on their CV.”

UCFB academic drafted in to advise Government AN academic at a Manchesterbased football education specialist, has been drafted in by the Government to improve primary physical education in the UK. Dr. Gerald Griggs, Head of Academics at UCFB’s Etihad Campus in Manchester, was asked to use his expertise to address the Houses of Parliament’s All-Party Parliamentary Group on a Fit and Healthy Childhood. During his talk in Westminster, Gerald was asked to present his views on Physical Education and Sport Premium funding which has been awarded to all primary schools, before going on to outline the landscape which had preceded the introduction of the fund. Gerald told the Group that there were areas of deep concern, such as a lack of specialist training and support for those delivering primary physical education. He also welcomed the funding to boost PE and sport in primary schools, before voicing his concern that most of the money flowed towards sports coaching companies and local sports clubs. He also questioned the accountability of schools as to how the money was spent. Gerald, widely regarded as a leading scholar in primary physical education, also questioned the quality of sessions provided by external agencies, adding there are little or no quality assurance processes in place, and warning of the consequences of what might happen when the funding ceases. He went on to give recommendations for the future, which included promoting physical education to core
subject status, creating a coherent curriculum which builds upon secure Early Years foundations and a renewed focus on the inclusion of lifelong physical activities. Speaking after his House of Commons address, Gerald said: “It was an honour to be asked to give my views and I’m looking forward to seeing what impact I can make at this level going forward.” Gerald was invited to speak by ministers because he is a globally recognised scholar within the field of primary physical education. Gerald is also an accomplished author, having written the leading textbook, The Routledge Handbook of Primary Physical Education. A UCFB spokesperson added: “We are delighted that Gerald was invited to address the House of Commons and proud that his expertise is available daily for everyone to utilise at UCFB in Manchester. “We will, of course, be watching carefully to see what action the Government’s AllParty Parliamentary Group on a Fit and Healthy Childhood takes as a result of Gerald’s recommendations.”

New Graphene business bounces out of The University of Manchester GRAFINE Ltd is a new business created to develop innovative high-performance rubbers, elastomers and other such soft materials enhanced with graphene, the extraordinary 2-dimensional material first produced in Manchester. The business was founded by two University of Manchester academics, Dr Maria Iliut and Dr Aravind Vijayaraghavan. Both founders are world experts in graphene, and its use in making rubbers and elastomers stronger and more durable. Grafine Ltd will be based at The University of Manchester’s Innovation Centre on Grafton Street and will use the University’s world-class facilities, including the brand-new Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC) for its product development work. Grafine is offering a range of technical development services to manufacturing companies from around the world who wish to profit from the performance benefits that graphene can add to their products. Elastomers and rubbers are used world over in products such as tyres, shoes, gloves, industrial components, construction materials, coatings and medical devices. The global market size for rubber and elastomer products is forecast to be more than £70 billion by 2021. Grafine Ltd is looking
to exploit the potential of this massive global market and has already excited interest from global manufacturers of elastomer and rubber products. Grafine is currently negotiating development contracts with such companies. Dr. Vijayaraghavan, who has been at the forefront of research into graphene for more than a decade, said: “We are very excited to launch Grafine Ltd because we have the specialist skills and know-how to help global manufacturing companies use new 2-dimensional materials like graphene effectively and cheaply.’ “Businesses in many sectors are continually striving to improve the properties of elastomeric compounds in order to enhance product performance in both existing and new applications. Graphene can further enhance the already excellent properties of rubber and elastomers by improving their strength, elasticity, flexibility, thermal stability, resistance to chemicals and durability. With the support of Grafine Ltd, manufacturing companies
will be able to give product designers even greater flexibility when they create new products. "Manufactures will be able to accelerate the speed with which they can bring these new elastomer composites to market while reducing risk and lowering cost”. The University’s wholly owned subsidiary, Graphene Enabled Systems Ltd, has supported the academic founders and, with assistance from UMI3 Ltd (the University’s IP commercialisation company), created Grafine Ltd. Its CEO, Andrew Wilkinson, who represents the University on the Grafine Ltd board, is very optimistic about Grafine’s future: “Grafine offers manufacturers the skills and know-how in graphene-enhanced elastomer and rubber composites and coatings that would take them decades to develop inhouse. As the company builds its customer base and grows, we predict it will have a major impact on the use of 2-dimensional materials in the global rubber and elastomer market.”

Salford University helps Burkert Innovative Solutions BURKERT Innovative Solutions (BIS) has thanked Wirral Chamber of Commerce and the University of Salford’s Structures and Enterprise team for the support of the firm’s Click Fix product. The journey started with Bradley Burkert attending a workshop at Wirral Chamber and chatting with Business Growth Manager, Lisa Furlong about the innovation journey. This led to support under the Business Growth Programme and introduction to the testing facilities at Salford. Whilst Click Fix is already on sale at main
suppliers, to commercialise more widely and overseas, BIS needed certified pressure test reports. The University carried out four tests in a controlled lab on Click Fix which resulted in proving a 55 bar (equivalent to 800psi) pressure test and held for 30 minutes before being released. With the resulting report, BIS can advance their sales and marketing strategy over the next 12 months. Lisa and Gary Bateman from Salford University met with Bradley and team to develop their 12 month strategy and further signposting in a great example of collaboration.
This included introductions to the Department for International Trade (DIT). BIS hope to have continued engagement and success with both organisations and are making good use of the events and support on offer through their Wirral Chamber membership. Bradley said: “We feel so positive moving forward with Click Fix now that we have the report. Lisa has provided us with fantastic support from our very first contact and it’s been great working with her and Gary”.

HMG Paints to give Veterans’ Garage a fresh lick of paint VETERANS’ Garage (VG) Manchester, based at Airport City, is getting a fresh lick of paint as plans progress to the next stages in renovating the Grade II listed former Airport Terminal. HMG Paints, the UK’s largest Independent Paint Manufacturer, is continuing its support with further donations of paint for the refreshment of the temporary Veterans’ Garage premises. At the same time, planning continues for extensive renovations of the Grade II listed 1930’s Airport Terminal. Veterans’ Garage, co-founded in 2015 by the Redshaws, an ex-military family suffering the impacts of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), have together created a unique approach to providing support for Military Veterans and Emergency Service personnel across the North West. The family’s aim was to provide a stable social hub for ex-servicemen and women to learn new skills, socialise and receive support and advice with in-house welfare
programmes. They hope the project, which was named NorthWest Social Enterprise of the Year 2017, will be a long-standing testament to veterans, giving exservicemen, servicewomen and their families a multifunctional hub to build skills and seek support, but also to socialise and make friends. “We are dedicated to working with local businesses who are active and supportive in the community and felt that HMG Paints very much fit with our ethos. We plan to have a long-term relationship with HMG Paints, not only utilising their Decorative Paints range, but also their impressive Automotive coatings for our restoration garage,” said Dave Redshaw, Veterans’ Garage CoFounder. The location for the Veterans’ Garage, City Airport, was the UK’s first purpose-built municipal airport. At the airport, the temporary venue, a converted portacabin, has been refurbished.
Alongside the portacabin sits a Grade II listed, WWII airport terminal building which has been generously donated to the project by The Peel Group. The VG team endeavour to preserve and enhance the historical features by designing the Grade II listed building in an Art Deco style, reflecting the 1930’s heritage. Transforming the building in to a multi-functional space, housing stylish lounges, club meeting and business facilities. A luxury restaurant will surround the downstairs car & motorcycle restoration garage for ex-service personnel of all ages to collaborate, restoring classic cars and motorcycles, whilst raising money and awareness. "Gracienne Ikin, HMG Paints’ Marketing and Communications executive said: “HMG is proud to be part of such an inspirational project. The Redshaws have created a unique and welcoming place for all, open 7 days a week, and the main project hasn’t even started yet! We look forward to the next few years working with the Veterans’ Garage team.”

Startup moves into FastForward incubator with entrepreneur’s help RETAIL disruptor firm, BizzleIt, is set to move into the FastForward incubator space, having been gifted a lease there by entrepreneur Lawrence Jones MBE. BizzleIt, led by Manchester businessmen Jordan Ryan Madeley and Michael Lawes, creates online platforms for businesses to share offers, products and services with consumer groups. Clients include SPAR, for whom they produced the SPAR GO app and loyalty platform. Jordan, said: “We’ve seen some great successes this year with the likes of SPAR, some new big-name brands coming on board and an everincreasing sales pipeline. With that in mind, we’ve looked at office spaces but, while we invest heavily in our product, we simply couldn’t afford them at this stage. “While many spaces in Manchester are described as incubator spaces, in fact they still have landlords charging significant rents. On top
of that, we’ve seen spaces where the atmosphere isn’t what a growing tech firm needs, they just tell you what you can’t do all the time or they chase you out of the door at 7pm.” Meeting for a mentoring session with UKFast CEO Lawrence Jones MBE, the BizzleIt team were offered a free one-year lease in the FastForward space. Jordan, added: “We had our hearts set on Tech Manchester, when it officially opens, because we’ve been hearing about it and watching the space and the community develop. We knew it was going to be the space for us but it was always going to be some time before we could afford even its low rates, so this offer from Lawrence is just amazing for us.” As they look to grow their team, the FastForward tenancy includes use of all the necessary facilities, including a phone-answering service, high-speed connectivity and all on-
campus amenities including recording studios and a health-food café. Lawrence Jones MBE, said: “I’ve known the guys behind BizzleIt for some time and whole-heartedly support the entrepreneurialism and innovation that they’re driving. So, as we celebrated Tech Manchester’s one-year anniversary, I wanted to give back to the community. Director of Tech Manchester, Patricia Keating, said: “It’s been a remarkable first year for Tech Manchester, we’ve signed up more than 100 mentors and now have our first three companies moving into the FastForward space, before we’ve even officially launched. “I am looking forward to getting to know the BizzleIt team and for Tech Manchester to support what is no doubt going to be an incredible journey from here.”
Businessman with designs on a successful second year A SENIOR designer who accepted redundancy three years ago is celebrating after his start-up business completed its first full year of trading, increasing turnover from £50,000 to nearly £200,000 in the process. Paul Grogan set up Think Design Manchester, after freelancing for nearly two years,
travelling across the country to work with clients such as Amazon, Balfour Beatty and global seismology business Guralp. Now the team, based on Turks Road in Radcliffe, is four-strong and looking forward to the next year of working with clients across the North West, ranging from restaurants to construction and offering services such as website
building and design to branding, photography and digital strategy. “We set up the office in Radcliffe, away from the hustle and bustle of Manchester. This gives us an affordable base and allows us to keep our overheads in check and, as a result, our costs are slightly more affordable than our Manchester counterparts.” “Also, having commuted to Manchester for 18
years, I wanted to stay local and use the time saved on commuting to work on the business and have more time with my kids.” “I’d love to get the team up to six people, increase the turnover again and maybe win some awards, but most importantly, we want to keep winning new work and keep our standards high, and customers happy.”

for members, expanding our impressive network of business leaders and giving us strength in numbers as we voice their opinions on the national stage.” Added Jennifer Houghton, Chair of the IoD in the Isle of Man: “There’s so much synergy and so little geographical distance between our respective networks, so this seems like a logical next step for us all. “Our aim is to promote the views of members and give them access to a broad network of like-minded business owners to better help their own operations; a bigger core of members for myself and Claire will help us deliver that and I look forward to our new working relationship. “We’re hitting the ground running, collaborating on new events and ideas, starting with our annual awards for the entire region early next year.”
COWGILLS business funding teams have together transacted over £100m of finance deals in the last year. We’ve opened many new lending lines and alternative sources of finance for current and new clients, as the market continues to move away from the highstreet banks.” Ben joined Cowgills last year, from fin-tech company MarketInvoice, to establish the firm’s dedicate business funding arm, following the success of the Property and Construction team’s finance offering which was established over six years ago. Continued Ben: “Together with the transactional deals secured by the Property and Construction team during the same period, we have
now broken the £100m mark, a clear indication of how active the market is at present and that the right funding deals are there to be had.” “We support our clients throughout the entire lifecycle of their business from securing start-up funding, to day-to-day management and accountancy advice, tax guidance and succession planning. That long-term relationship often starts with the funding which we match to their needs, and we have some fantastic success stories.” Commenting on the property deals delivered, property finance director David Rainford, added: “Our Property and Construction division typically works with owner-managed, small to medium sized property companies and house-builders right across the region. The appetite for growth in this sector is strong and these figures are certainly testament to that having completed on just under £20m of property transactions in the past few weeks. With many lenders based in Manchester, it is right that our finance team is also here in the city and we are seeing a significant uplift in deals done due to the strength of our relationships with a wide variety of lenders.” Clients include NJOY Student Living, property development company Lane End Developments and Create Construction.

Bridging finance company Fluid Trust launches in Manchester NEW bridging finance company Fluid Trust has launched in Manchester. Fluid Trust is led by Chief Executive Officer Ansar Mahmood and Operations Director Will Jackson. Serial entrepreneur, Ansar ensures investors are given the chance, through the company finance product ‘Fluid Bond’ , to support a raft of new property projects across the North West and the rest of the UK, with returns fixed and secured against assets. Ansar, Vice-President of the UK North Chapter of the global entrepreneurs’ network TiE, said the new company’s target is to raise £20 million within the next eight months. “The Fluid Bond differs from other bonds in two main ways,” said Ansar, who is also founder of Manchester-based Pomegranate Consulting. “First, the investment comes with an attractive interest rate of 6% per annum fixed for the three years in which the bonds are held. “Second, it can be held through an Innovative Finance ISA (IFISA) and delivers interest payments on a quarterly basis, in contrast to most ISAs that work annually.” Ansar, who will work closely with Fluid Operations Director Will Jackson, said investment raised will be used as lending capital to provide asset-backed bridging loans to exciting projects throughout the UK. He said: “With the perception that high-street banks and other traditional lenders are slowing down the rate at which they are willing to lend, the need for bridging
providers has never been greater. “It’s becoming more difficult in the current climate to obtain a loan, which is placing greater emphasis on the need for a quality bridging provider. And that’s where Fluid Lending come in.” Members of the Fluid Trust team have previously worked on deals including development funding on a prominent 64-Unit residential development in Manchester City Centre; asset purchase funding for business expansion within the TV industry and pre-auction purchase of a successful high-street retail/ processing unit. Will Jackson added: “Ansar and I believe that within the current lending arena there is room for a highly professional, quality-driven player. “One of the major considerations for clients when choosing a bridging lender is how quickly these transactions can be completed. The interest rates are reflective of this requirement, as well as the short-term nature of the loans.” “Fluid is committed to ensuring an accessible, responsive, and dependable service, maintaining strong communication links with all parties to ensure Fluid Lending assess applications quickly and effectively.”

Haydock business leads the way in global security best practice ATG Access, the world’s leading innovator of road blockers, bollards and vehicle barrier systems, hosted its annual International Distributor Conference to offer security and counter terrorism best practice to protect cities around the world. The event welcomed representatives from 16 countries, including China, Qatar, Japan, USA and Germany, who were keen to learn more from the British manufacturer about how the latest developments in security systems could aid their country’s defence strategies. The International Distributor Conference, held over two days at Manchester United’s ground, Old Trafford, provided engineering, sales and technical support and training to global representatives. It also provided an opportunity for ATG Access to reveal its latest product developments, including the innovative Surface Guard road block system, which was specifically designed in response to the surge of recent vehicle attacks that have taken place across Europe. It is capable of withstanding an attack from a 7,200kg lorry travelling at 32 kph, and its lightweight modular design makes it quick to install, transport and easy to store. ATG Access manufactures and supplies its bollard, barriers and temporary event security products across 42 global locations, including the UAE, Singapore, India and North America. Its international projects have included deploying bollards at Doha International Aiport in Qatar, and on Singapore’s elite shopping street, Orchard
Road, to help protect visitors from vehicle borne threats. Exporting sales now account for half of ATG Access’ annual turnover, totalling £8m for the last financial year. Conor McGinn, MP for St Helen’s, opened the onference and said: “ATG Access is at the forefront of innovation. A world leader, the company now operates on a global stage. “In the wake of Brexit, companies such as ATG Access that are fleet of foot will be integral to the UK’s economy. I am delighted the business is based in my constituency.” Gavin Hepburn, director at ATG Access, said: “The exporting arm of our business has become integral to what we do here at ATG Access, with security now a key priority globally. “A huge factor in our success abroad has been building relationships with regional partners to ensure strong customer relationships. Without this we would not have been able to achieve the same level of growth that we’ve experienced over the last 10 years. “Therefore, it was an honour to host representatives from 16 of our partner countries at our International Distributor Conference. The annual event not only provides a fantastic opportunity for training and development, but also for further strengthening our growing global network.”

Manchester fashion brand goes international
THE MULTI award-wining children’s clothing brand, Kidunk, which was created by Greater Manchester-based childcare experts is going international thanks to a new deal with Norwegian lifestyle distributor; Kitchen and Home. Kidunk, a range of innovative play clothes for children aged 2-5 years old was launched in August 2017 by Bolton-based childcare experts, Tina and Phill Knight, who own their own nursery and have over 30-years-experience of working with preschoolers. They spotted a gap in the market for practical play clothes, which would allow children the freedom to play without the worry of spoiling or staining their everyday clothes. Working in partnership with award-winning children’s designer Lisa Joyce, formerly of Cosatto, they combined practical ideas with fashionable styling to create a unique range of play clothes for young children. Since its launch, Kidunk has won numerous parenting and industry awards for its practical, yet stylish approach to kids’ fashion that encourages all types of messy play. Kidunk chose the prestigious Oslo Design Fair to stage its international launch, with hopes that its unique clothing will appeal to a Scandinavian audience as well as pave the way for future expansion throughout Europe. They are partnering with Norwegian based Lifestyle distributor
Kitchen & Home who specialise in design led, innovative products and are looking to expand into the children’s clothing market. The company has set-up their own online store as well as pushing the brand to local retailers. Kidunk Director Tina Knight, said: “The Scandinavian approach to learning through play is at the heart of our brand. Our playful designs appeal to this sector of the market and our research found that although the Scandinavian fashion for neutral, greys and whites is far reaching in homeware and fashion, for children’s play, they prefer brighter bolder clothing design. “We have had an amazing first year of trading, with a positive response from parents, children and the industry as whole, going to the Oslo Design Fair was another great experience and we hope that it’s just the start of our international expansion.” Kim Lohne from Kitchen & Home, said: “We are proud and excited to introduce Kidunk in Norway. The combination of style and comfort appealed to us and we believe that it will also have huge appeal to Norwegian parents. It is a part of the Norwegian soul to play outside in any weather, come rain or snow, hiking in the forests and mountains. For these activities, we need clothing that breaths but at the same time keeps us warm and dry, Kidunk provides the solution for this beautifully.”

GVA brings the buzz to Manchester
LEADING real estate advisor, GVA, has installed bee hives on three of its managed schemes in Manchester and Salford, building on its 2017 bee initiative, which saw the introduction of two hives to Ship Canal House on King Street. As part of the initiative, hives have now been fitted on the roofs of Piccadilly Place, Piccadilly Gate and The Soapworks. With two hives containing around 40,000 bees placed on each building, it brings the total number of GVA bees in the city to around 320,000. GVA’s hive initiative was introduced last year in response to declining bee numbers in Britain and was designed to protect the species and create new habitats. The honey produced from the bees will be sold to the occupiers in each of
the buildings, and all money raised will be donated to The Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside. A trained beekeeper will visit each hive once a month, to ensure the welfare of the bees and answer any queries that occupiers might have. Matthew Mears at GVA, said: “With the ‘Bee in the City’ project currently creating a buzz throughout the city and the colourful bees getting the attention of visitors and locals alike, it’s a great opportunity to highlight the importance of the bee and its declining population. “The bee has become a powerful symbol of Manchester’s community spirit, and our hive initiative is an extension of this, bringing the buildings’ tenants together, through events and charity fundraising.”

Equilibrium, which provides free breakfast for its staff, decided to instead donate this cost for one week, every month, to a foodbank in the Greater Manchester area. Every month this comes to a £200 donation, with Equilibrium staff also donating various foodstuffs and toiletries. For the last four months the Wilmslowbased company has made these donations to the Brick in Stockport, Atherton foodbank and Leigh foodbank. Most recently, Equilibrium made a donation to The Trussell Trust. These foodbanks provide much needed supplies for local families who are struggling to make ends meet and put enough food on the table.

People are more likely to donate to foodbanks during the winter when it is cold outside, but the summer months are crucial as children are at home during the school holidays. Debbie Jukes, Partner at Equilibrium Asset Management, said: “We know that foodbanks in the Greater Manchester area are well used and need donations to ensure their shelves are kept well stocked with essential supplies. “As a company we go a long way to providing the best possible working environment for our employees and this includes a healthy breakfast. Community soups helps 108 projects with £179,000 of funding COMMUNITY Soup is a series of events where funding is offered by housing provider One Manchester and has helped local projects receive £179,000 over the last three years. Applications are now open for the next round of funding where another £32,000 is on offer. Projects across Manchester have received funding and support through the Community Soup programme, including Levenshulme based Early Essentials, who provide Moses basket hampers to the most vulnerable pregnant women across Greater Manchester. Another successful recipient is the Peter Quinn Friendship Group, who support those affected
by dementia along with their family and carers. The idea for Community Soup started in Detroit and has taken off around the world. Community groups and projects that make a difference in their neighbourhoods are invited to apply to pitch at one of four events across the city. Applications are then shortlisted and are judged on how well the project aligns with One Manchester’s vision, whether the project is sustainable and how well the project demonstrates social innovation. After enjoying a bowl of soup at the events and listening to the project pitches, the audience of local residents vote for those they think should get the funding. To date, over 600 people in East
and South Manchester have turned up to cast their vote on the matters important to them. Lesley Brereton, customer involvement manager at One Manchester, has seen the difference the funding money can make. She said: “Having worked with 266 individual projects with tailored support and funding, it’s clear how vital funding is for these groups to survive. One Manchester’s Community Soup has helped connect local people and projects that make an invaluable contribution to where they live and the lives of others. The decision on where the funding is awarded is in the hands of local people, which think is really important.”

grateful to Price Slater Gawne Solicitors and the Will Aid scheme for this generous contribution. “The Red Cross uses donations to reach people in crisis, here in the UK and all around the world. “£300 could feed ten families in Syria for a month. £80 could help train four people in life-saving first aid skills here in the UK. And with £1,000, our UK volunteers could give five people the support they need to readjust to life at home following a spell in hospital.” Will Aid, which is celebrating its 30th year since launching, is a charity will-writing scheme that raises money for nine charities: ActionAid, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save The Children, Sightsavers, Age UK, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire
(Northern Ireland). Peter de Vena Franks, campaign director for Will Aid added: “Will Aid has made an amazing contribution to the work of the nine participating charities and last year was no exception. Thanks to the commitment of local solicitors that took part in this year’s Will Aid, many people both in the UK and abroad will receive life-changing support and local people who used the scheme have the peace of mind thanks to having a professionally drawn up will. “I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to Price Slater Gawne Solicitors and let them know that thanks to them, lives will change for the better and people who need it will continue to receive the help and support that the charities work so hard to provide.”
Superheroes and Pink Ladies help Hurst raise £4,800 for charity SUPERHEROES, super-fit cyclists and the Pink Ladies and T Birds from the hit movie Grease helped accounting and business advisory firm HURST to raise nearly £5,000 in a charity challenge. Six teams of staff each undertook an activity for the day to raise money for MedEquip4Kids, HURST’s charity of the year. More than 40 people took part in the activities, including chief executive Tim Potter, partners, managers and PAs. The 2018 HURST Charity Challenge saw staff dressed as superheroes such as Batman and Superman posing for selfies with members of the public in Stockport town centre. Another team collected old mobile phones and ran a face painting, cake sale and tombola stall in the town centre, while nearby a team ran a raffle. One group offered a car wash and valet service from HURST’s Stockport office car park while another, dressed as Grease characters,
washed cars from the premises of HURST clients HMG Paints and Acrobat Carbon Services, in Manchester, Middleton and Ashtonunder-Lyne. HURST partner Simon Brownbill, the firm’s director of practice development, said: “We’re delighted with the result of our first charity fundraising day of this kind and we are grateful to everyone who supported our teams to help make the event such a huge success. “Along with raising a fantastic amount of money, we were able to get involved with the community and spread the word about the great work that MedEquip4Kids does for our local hospitals.” MedEquip4Kids raises money to provide paediatric medical equipment and facilities for hospitals and community health teams that are not funded by the NHS. HURST aimed to raise £7,000 this year but has now smashed the target with the total currently at £9,200.

Salford social supermarket expands with support from the Edward Holt Trust LUCIE’S Pantry social supermarket, based at homelessness charity Emmaus Salford, will double its capacity thanks to a £66k grant from the Edward Holt Trust. Lucie’s Pantry provides a sustainable and affordable source of food and household essentials to members of the Pendleton community struggling to make ends meet through debt, illness or low income. The Edward Holt Trust grant will enable Lucie’s Pantry to increase its membership from 80 to 160 households, supporting up to 800 people in Salford. The Edward Holt Trust originated in a 1955 endowment from Sir Edward Holt, owner of Manchester’s Joseph Holt brewery and great uncle of Richard Kershaw, the current Chairman of the Trustees and Chief Executive of Joseph Holt’s.
Richard, commented: “We are delighted to support this excellent project to provide a greatly improved service within Salford. The endowment by Sir Edward Holt was to help support the local community and expanding Lucie’s Pantry certainly hits the spot.” Pat Ekins was formerly a member of the Emmaus Salford community, a charity which offers support to people who have experienced homelessness. Pat recently moved in to her own flat and thanks to the support from the Edward Holt Trust, is now employed full-time as Project Manager at Lucie’s Pantry. Pat said: “It’s massive what the Edward Holt Trust has done for us to allow Lucie’s Pantry to expand. There are so many people out there who’ve not got enough money, they’re not
eating properly and it’s heart breaking. “We’ve got a long waiting list so with the support from the Edward Holt Trust we can get more people signed up and benefitting from Lucie’s Pantry.” The social supermarket model is different to food banks. People who want to use the social supermarket become members of Lucie’s Pantry. Members pay £2.50 per week and are able to choose items to the value of approximately £15.
Simon Locke, Community Director at Emmaus Salford, added: “We are extremely grateful to the Edward Holt Trust for their generous support to enable Lucie’s Pantry to help even more people and families across Salford. “Food poverty, or food insecurity, is a growing issue affecting many people in communities up and down the country. What we try to do with Lucie’s Pantry is break the stigma and offer great food for great people who are struggling to make ends meet.”

Student Castle reveals plans for 55-storey highend student accommodation and SME incubator
YOUR FREE Business Newspaper
PLANS to build a 55-storey high-end student accommodation skyscraper and a SME incubator in Manchester city centre have been revealed. Specialist student housing developer Student Castle has put forward proposals for the Hulme Street scheme, which would also see an area of the existing multi-storey car park partially deconstructed to reconfigure the layout. Featuring 850 studio apartments, the 165-metre
tall purpose-built accommodation has been designed for undergraduate and postgraduate students to live, study, relax and enjoy the city. Other features of the ‘contextual Manchester red brick building’ are 6,000 sq ft of communal and ancillary spaces for student use and 259 secure cycle storage spaces. In addition, the SME co-working operation will boast 8,000 sq ft of high quality space over four floors. Students and postgraduates residing in the building will be given the chance to work alongside startup professionals in a supportive incubator environment. Architects Glenn Howells are design leaders on the project on behalf of GMS (Parking) Ltd. The planning submission proposes to reconfigure and reduce the size of the existing multi-storey car park in order to release this exciting development opportunity on the surplus part of the site. Student Castle intends to open the landmark scheme towards the end of 2022. Edward Cade said: “The building will become a new Manchester landmark and provide spectacular views over the city. Prior to submitting plans, the height of the proposed building has been developed alongside consultation with the Places Matter! Design Panel and Historic England. The proposals have
also undergone an extensive local authority, statutory and public design review and consultation process. Alan McCartney, Studio Director for Glenn Howells Architects, said: “The design proposes a contemporary interpretation of the contextual red brick buildings present in and around Manchester. “Its proximity to the local universities, transport hubs and the city core makes the site location ideal for an emerging student development, combined with an ambitious vision to design high quality student living where students would want to live. “The provision of SME incubation space also offers opportunities for small businesses to have an affordable workspace.” Ed Britton, Assistant Director of Deloitte Real Estate, said: “The Hulme Street project will directly meet the need to improve and increase Manchester’s range of student accommodation by providing high quality purpose built accommodation and will help encourage students out of city centre apartments. The SME incubator space will help nurture growing businesses and supports the strategic growth objectives of the City and Oxford Road Corridor. The scheme demonstrates exceptional design quality and will make a positive contribution to the emerging Oxford Road cluster and Manchester’s skyline.”

Repair specialist on the hunt for neglected landmarks in need of restoration A SPECIALIST finishing and repair firm wants to breathe new life into run down landmarks across the UK. Plastic Surgeon, the UK’s leading surface repair experts, is calling on the public to nominate cracked iconic statues, stained public artworks and tired local monuments desperate for renovation. Their nationwide ‘Community Restoration Project’ campaign not only wants to restore a forgotten landmark somewhere in the UK, but forgotten civic pride too. Gary Danson, Operations Director for Plastic Surgeon, said: “It’s a campaign inspired by an undertaking of ours in North Shields, which saw us
restore a statue of Stan Laurel, marking the fact he grew up within the area.” “After 30 years of neglect and exposure to the elements, it was looking in a very sorry state until we stepped in and rectified the wear and tear. The feedback we received following its restoration was great, while it also seemed to create a sense of restored civic pride alongside the actual restoration itself, hence the concept of community restoration. It was this that inspired us to try and replicate the enthusiasm for the results of our repair work elsewhere.” Suggestions will be shortlisted nationwide, and a popular vote will decide the winner.
Entries should explain why the installation is important to the community and why it is worthy of restoration, to whip up public support. Gary continued: “Our company ethos, given the fact we advocate repair over replacement, is centred on sustainability and corporate social responsibility. The local community is important to us and this is an approach we’re looking to extend to a wider audience. As a business that has a national reach, our ‘local’ community technically stretches the length of the UK and beyond. “We’re really looking forward to seeing what comes to light and, hopefully, we’ll find a statue, public
art installation or whatever it happens to be, that’s close to the heart of its community, allowing us to help promote some civic pride while also restoring a potential eyesore to its former splendour.”
