Borneo It’s a Jungle out there...

Borneo is one of nature’s rarities, it has such rich and unique biodiversity making it a mecca for wildlife lovers from around the world. The island is covered by an ancient rainforest, one of the world’s oldest, and is home to thousands of species of flowers, trees, mammals and birds - many of which are found nowhere else. It has also become a last refuge for a number of endangered animals including the Bornean Orangutan and Pygmy Elephant. Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre is known worldwide for the work it has done in helping turn around the fortunes of the native species. The centre rears between 60 and 80 orangutans that have been orphaned, teaching them the skills essential for their survival in the wild. A couple of hours drive from Sepilok is the Kinabatangan River, one of the most ecologically diverse rivers in the world. On cruises along Kinabatangan you can expect to see pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys and rare bird species. Close by are Gomantong Caves, known for the nightly exodus of its more than quarter-of-a-million strong population of bats, one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural phenomena.

There are two sides to the island’s flora and fauna. As well as the wealth of species and unique wildlife who call the island home, Borneo also has magnificent landscapes to discover with superb Highlands, pristine beaches and deserted islands waiting to be explored. Kinabalu National Park, inland from the city of Kota Kinabalu is known for its superb jungle trails which give views of Borneo’s tallest mountain, Mount Kinabalu. Of course, as with the rest of the island there’s plenty of chance to discover wildlife, with more than 4,500 species of flora and fauna in the park alone. The Shearings Borneo Wilderness tour includes accommodation that mixes the luxurious with the unique! You’ll stay in rainforest lodges, mountainside boutique hotels and idyllic seafront resorts, including the Shangri-La Rasa Ria which sits on the pristine white sands of Dalit Beach, lapped by clear blue seas that stretch to the horizon. Prices start from £2,192 per person and include return flights from the UK, meals, resort transfers, accommodation and nine included excursions to discover this incomparable island.

Work starts on £12m facility at Samlesbury Aerospace EZ WORK has started on a new £12m facility at Samlesbury Aerospace Enterprise Zone, marking the latest phase in its development as a national centre of excellence for advanced engineering and manufacturing. Representatives from the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP), Lancashire County Council (LCC) and BAE Systems attended the ground-breaking ceremony at BAE Systems’ new asset management facility, off Sir Frederick Page Way. The asset management facility will enable BAE Systems to work more effectively and allow for growth. It is the third building BAE Systems has chosen to build on the Enterprise Zone, along with their logistics centre and the world-class Academy for Skills and Knowledge. The new facility will be used to securely store and process assets, allowing BAE Systems to consolidate its existing storage currently spread across the UK and enable a growth in its capacity to fulfil new contracts.

It will take 12 months to complete the facility, which is closer to existing BAE Systems sites and the proposed Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), allowing easier access to, and distribution of, specialised equipment, parts and tools. Samlesbury Aerospace EZ is already home to two important aerospace facilities – the £16m Academy for Skills and Knowledge and the £15m Wincanton Defence and Logistics Centre, along with being the site of the proposed North West AMRC. LEP Director, Miranda Barker, said: “This new facility marks another significant investment in the Samlesbury Aerospace EZ, which is home to a growing number of topclass, high-tech facilities. “Lancashire is an attractive place to invest. We have a critical mass of world-class aerospace and advanced manufacturing industries, a long tradition of innovation and enterprise, and we can offer excellent facilities,

infrastructure and support like those at Samlesbury. “Adding to Lancashire’s key sector focus spanning automotive, energy and as the world’s fourth largest aerospace cluster, the continued investment by BAE Systems and across the Enterprise Zone further stimulates investment in and by our multi-layered supply chain of local SMEs, the existence of which drives the global success of the economy for us all. “The four Enterprise Zones in the Lancashire Advanced Manufacturing and Energy Cluster combine to make up an economic and investor offer of Northern Powerhouse significance, creating over 10,000 new high value jobs. “This latest development shows how we and our partners are leveraging these assets to drive investment, economic growth and job creation across Lancashire.“ Dave Holmes, Director of Manufacturing, BAE Systems, said: “We look forward to welcoming

further aerospace and advanced manufacturing business to the EZ as it develops further.” Stephen Young, Lancashire County Council’s Executive Director of Growth, Environment, Transport and Community Services, said: “Lancashire is home to the fourth largest aerospace cluster in the world. The Enterprise Zone is a major opportunity to further develop the county’s long-established expertise in advanced manufacturing. “By working with BAE Systems and the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership, we’re opening up this site to create high-quality jobs, bring economic growth and support our world-class advanced manufacturing sector.” At the end of last year, the LEP completed £11m of infrastructure works at the Enterprise Zone, which include a new spine road, two new access points, ecology and drainage works.

Sustain celebrates a decade of protecting the environment

A GROUP of VIPs joined staff at the Sustain recycling centre in Huncoat to celebrate a decade of helping to protect the environment. Hyndburn MP Graham Jones was joined by Deputy Mayor, Cllr Jean Harrison and a group of dignitaries to celebrate the centre’s 10th birthday. Sustain, part of The Senator Group, the UK’s biggest manufacturer of office furniture takes redundant furniture and packaging from its own customers and recycles them to ensure nothing goes to landfill. The purpose-built 15,000ft. recycling unit has recycled more than 270,000 items and diverted more than 7.5million kg of waste from landfill since establishing this business. This

equates to an emissions saving of 8,790,798 Kg/CO2. All furniture that comes into Sustain, based in Huncoat, is stripped into its component parts, wood, metal, plastic, fabrics and foam and is then processed by the Sustain team so they are either made into other items, are recycled or disposed of responsibly. Senator also donates furniture to charitable and not-for-profit organisations. For example, in 2018, we donated tables and chairs to the Burnley FC’s Community Kitchen, which includes a foodbank, café, teaching kitchen and meeting space, to help support vulnerable people in the area. Oli Clarke, Senator’s Strategic

Business Projects Manager, said: “We were delighted that so many people were able to join us for Sustain’s 10th birthday celebration. “Sustain is not only helping to protect the environment, it has become a sustainable business in its own right, providing work opportunities, while providing a vital service to both customers and the wider community. “Over the past decade, Sustain has become a zero to landfill entity but we are still working on new ways to reduce our impact on the environment – both in terms of our manufacturing processes, our raw materials and in our supply chain. “As a business, we have invested

heavily in green technology and state-of-the-art production planning software to increase the yield of our raw materials. “We also use state-of-the-art payload optimisation software and the latest “green” engines to ensure that our logistics operation has the minimal impact on the environment. “All of our products are 100 per cent recyclable at the end of their working life, as is our waste packaging, so we are able to help customers with their own sustainability targets. “Sustain is going from strengthto-strength and we’d like to thank everyone who helped to celebrate this landmark with us.”

Dr. Oetker celebrates 10 Years of production in Leyland Dr. OETKER UK has completed a £30m capital investment programme in Leyland. The new production capabilities at the facility means that the capacity potential has doubled. The facility which produces popular pizza brands, Chicago Town and Dr. Oetker Ristorante, for the UK and international markets has increased total capacity with the introduction of a new production line for its popular Chicago Town Deep Dish pizzas, new raw materials storage capacity and new technology which results in faster and more efficient freezing.

The new line was officially opened by Mayor of South Ribble, Cllr John Rainsbury and attended by Dr. Oetker Executive board members as well as representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry and the German Embassy in the UK. The continued investment in the Moss Lane facility throughout the last 10 years has resulted in more job opportunities and has seen the business swell numbers from 360 to 440 people. Speaking about the investment, Georg Heerdegen Parsbo, Managing Director at Dr. Oetker UK said: “Dr. Oetker is incredibly proud of our

world-class facility and our new investment means we can continue to meet the demands for our great tasting pizzas both here in the UK and overseas. Dr. Oetker philosophy of “Quality is the Best Recipe” is at the heart of the business and our investment demonstrates a clear commitment to the UK business and the future of pizza manufacturing in our Leyland facility. “We are very grateful to the South Ribble Council and support of the local community without whom our expansion would not have been possible.”

NCC students design concept piece of salon furniture after visit to leading Nelson manufacturer NELSON and Colne College Hair and Beauty students have been learning about the history of one of Europe’s leading salon fixture and fittings manufacturers after a factory visit. REM, based in Nelson, has 100 years of heritage, and in that time has established itself as a leading supplier of equipment to the salon, beauty and spa industries. The company produces in-house salon furniture and fittings from reception desks and wash units through to motorised beauty couches, as well as a wide range soft furnishings. Following a factory and showroom tour, the NCC students channelled their artistic talent into creating a new concept piece of salon furniture.

Beauty students Jenna Nuttall and Katie Hartley’s rose gold spiral and black leather salon chair was picked out as the favourite design, and the pair have won a salon trolley for their artist’s impression. Katie, 17, formerly of Colne Primet Academy, is on the Level 2 Make-Up Pre-Apprenticeship course at NCC. She said: “We just wanted the design to be striking and to stand out, but also comfortable with a padded leather chair. “I enjoyed the visit and there’s a family connection as my dad used to work at REM. I’m really enjoying the course at Nelson and Colne College as I’m developing my skills and there is freedom to be creative within the course.”

Jenna, 17, formally of Fishermore RC High School, is on the same course at NCC. She said: “I really like the rose gold colour and I’m happy we created something a little bit different. “The course at college is setting me up for the future and I would like to work in make-up behind the scenes in the film industry.” Claire Pye, Head of Division for Hair and Beauty at Nelson and Colne College, said: “I’d like to thank REM for allowing our students to enjoy a tour of the factory and for inspiring them with the company history and the salon equipment that they manufacture. “This educational visit and followup challenge was a great chance to get our students thinking outside

the box and more about the fabric of the salon itself, and for the college it was another chance to develop an employer link with a leading company right on the doorstep in Nelson.” Trevor Lingard, Commercial Director at REM, said: “Here at REM we’re proud of our 100 years of history in designing and providing equipment for the hairdressing industry and supporting colleges around the country in their training facilities. “The visit to our factory and showroom from Nelson and Colne College students has been an extremely worthwhile exercise and they have gone away with a better insight into the equipment they will be using throughout their careers."

Lancashire-based manufacturers among first in UK to enrol in Made Smarter business support programme THREE pioneering companies in Lancashire are among the first in the country to benefit from a governmentbacked programme designed to boost UK manufacturing productivity and growth. EnviroSystems, based in Preston, Graham Engineering Ltd (GEL), in Nelson, and T&R Precision Engineering, in Colne, are aiming to transform their businesses by adopting new digital technologies through the £20m Made Smarter Programme. They are among a cohort of nine North West companies who have successfully applied for Made Smarter matched-funding, allowing them to explore and adopt leading-edge advanced manufacturing methods such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), 3D-printing and robotics. One business set to reap significant benefits from new tech is EnviroSystems, a small, family-owned company based in Barton Cross Park, Preston, which supplies farmers with innovative products. It wants to develop cutting-edge dosing systems to treat and improve the quality of slurry. EnviroSystems estimates that by harnessing smart technologies including sensors, big data, analytics and machine learning the company could grow at a rate of 16% per year for the next three years. The investment will create a demand for highly skilled jobs and to further adopt other digital technologies, such as robotics, to address increased productivity needs. The new systems will significantly help farmers by radically improving the quality of slurry as a means of fertilisation. This will result in huge reductions in odorous gases, such as ammonia, in line with the UK government’s Clean Air strategy. Henry Russell, Operations Manager at EnviroSystems, said:

GROWTH STORIES

In association with Boost Business Lancashire

South Ribble manufacturer gets boost with mentoring PET and personal care products manufacturer Group55 Ltd has increased turnover by more than 40% and created twelve new jobs after receiving mentoring support from Boost. Stephen Turner, who first started up in business at the age of 25, formed Group55 in 1999, initially selling pest control products online. Over the years, the company diversified to become a world leading manufacturer of dog grooming products supplying the largest pet retailers with both branded and private label products, but as the company grew their reliance on third party manufacturers became increasingly problematic. It was clear to Stephen that he needed to take control of the manufacturing process. Today, Group55 manufactures a wide range of products for humans as well as dogs and export to more than 50 countries. The journey from a small office to a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility came with many challenges, but one of Stephen’s first steps in preparing for the challenges he faced was to speak with Boost. Stephen said: “In the past I’ve embarked on various business support schemes to help grow the business but they didn’t work. The mentors had no related experience and they didn’t understand my business. I just thought it a waste of time. “I was not convinced about mentoring until about

two years ago when I knew I needed to make a dramatic shift in operations, which took me out of my comfort zone. I went looking for professional guidance and South Ribble Council recommended I speak to Boost.” After an initial discussion about the business, Stephen’s challenges and goals, Boost delivery partner Orvia identified David Grant, a business mentor with a wealth of experience in strategic business planning, as the best person to support Group 55. Growth Mentoring is a fully funded Boost programme where business owners are matched with a successful businessperson to offer 1-2-1 support in order to tackle the challenges faced in growing the business. The programme is delivered by Community and Business Partners and Orvia to established businesses across the county. When Stephen first engaged with Boost in October 2017, Group55 had nine employees. The firm had just moved into a £2m facility on Matrix Park to begin Stephen’s manufacturing ambitions. David Grant, Stephen’s growth mentor said “Stephen is an accomplished businessman and was directing the business very

well. As his mentor I helped him to plan strategically, record the strategies and share his ambitions with the rest of his team. “In the first meeting we discussed the need for an honest appraisal of the business and staff. The business direction clearly needed identifying, including customer profile, new product development and the introduction of a manufacturing facility.” As part of the business appraisal, Stephen created a company structure and presented it to the team, with a commitment to improve team communications and engender honest and open communication channels across the business. Stephen said: “The experience from David Grant was invaluable. He has a great mentoring style, by letting us make our own decisions. We went through the business, discussing where we wanted to be and what were our challenges. With his previous experience in manufacturing

he had been there and done it, so he understood what I was going through at each stage. “David was able to produce solutions and think differently to us which really helped to have a different perspective on the business. He listened, and then dealt with it in manageable bite size chunks.” Since the mentoring support, Group55 now employs more than 20 staff – with new roles created in the manufacturing, technical and quality departments of the company. Turnover has increased by more than 40% and Stephen is now aiming to triple the turnover again by 2020. Their laboratory and onsite manufacturing processes became fully operational in March 2019 with capacity for running three filling lines producing more than 500,000 units per month. Ann Lancaster, operations manager at Orvia said: “The mentoring support has been invaluable and gave Stephen the confidence he needed to push forward with his

manufacturing ambitions. Having experienced some ‘ineffective mentoring’ many years ago, Stephen was cautious about the impact the support could add to the business. However, the Boost mentoring support allowed Stephen to ‘just talk’ providing the sounding board he was missing as at the time when he was the only director on the board of his business.” David and Stephen continue to work together to sustain the growth and direction of Group55. Since being mentored, Stephen has now qualified as a Boost Growth Mentor to help support other ambitious Lancashire business owners. Earlier this year, he started mentoring his first business client. Stephen said: “After such a wonderful experience of mentoring, I can truly appreciate the impact it can have on a business and wanted to be able to do for other businesses what David has done for Group55.”

Preston bamboo flooring business sees sustainable growth A PRESTON-based bamboo flooring specialist has growth aspirations to recruit six employees after receiving advice from Boost. David Lord set up Bamboo Family Co Ltd in 2018 importing bamboo flooring from China which he then distributes throughout the UK. He had taken early retirement after being diagnosed with MS but felt ready to work again after positive stem cell treatment and decided to start up his own business. He was introduced to Boost’s Growth Support Programme after seeing a Facebook post about the support and was then referred to Sue Denver from Winning Pitch to help him get started. David said: “I have family connections with a niche bamboo flooring manufacturer in China. I recognised that this was a great business opportunity for me and something I could operate in UK, despite my disability. “I was keen to be involved in promoting the environmental benefits of bamboo flooring. But having little experience in importing, wholesaling and marketing, I needed the confidence to set it up.” Bamboo flooring is much more durable than wood and longer lasting too. As a grass, Bamboo regrows quickly when cut and is faster to replace that replanting felled trees.

Rona McFall, Head of Entrepreneurial Solutions at Winning Pitch said: “When David was introduced to Boost, he needed knowledge to get started. Things had significantly changed since he last worked. This included learning about marketing and social media. “He attended Boost’s Grow How Series to learn all about Google

AdWords and digital marketing as well attending Facebook masterclasses. He benefited from our practical sales techniques course – to help him manage the opportunities his marketing efforts were generating. Since receiving support and advice from Boost, David has set up storage and distribution facilities in Rossendale. He has also exhibited at

homebuilding and household shows in London and Birmingham to secure potential supply contracts. His customers include flooring suppliers, building contractors and interior design outlets When David joined the Growth Support Programme his growth aspirations were to recruit six employees and turnover £500,000 over a three-year period. He is now developing his website to enable customers to order online and plans to appoint a part-time IT specialist as well as additional warehouse workers. Rona added: “Bamboo Family Co is still in its early stages of growth, but with David’s international contacts in the industry and relationship with distributors in China, he’s well on track to meet his growth targets.” David said: “We have plans over the next 12 months to launch a range of flooring products made from a limestone composite polymer, another sustainable hard floor product. “Promoting the use of renewable products in the building trade is a key selling feature for our business. We are keen to be known as an eco-friendly business doing ‘our bit’ to protect the planet.”

Health innovation at Lancaster hosts successful Push the Boundaries business engagement event AROUND 100 businesses attended an event organised by the new Health Innovation Campus at Lancaster University for an exciting look at the future of healthcare. Push the Boundaries: Innovation in Health featured a panel of experts discussing how new data, digital practices and technological innovations are already being used to improve patient care – and the many upcoming opportunities in the sector. The debate also covered valuable lessons around the risks and rewards of implementing digital technologies, funding issues and bringing products

and services to market. Highlights included a talk from Keith Mitchell, Vice President of Engineering at Push Doctor, a commercial online GP consultation service which has become one of Europe’s fastest growing clinical networks. Margaret Cooper, Associate Director of Clinical Research and Innovation at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, gave an engaging talk on how the trust is looking to work with businesses. Presentations from Lancaster University’s Data Science Institute

and Imagination highlighted how the institution can collaborate with businesses on exciting health initiatives. Dr Sherry Kothari, Director of the Health Innovation Campus – who opened the event, said: “This event showcased the kind of innovations which are currently taking place in the health space – while providing information which could help companies move forward with their own projects. “We had high levels of interest from local organisation across an interesting mix of industry and health

providers, proving the appetite for engaging with this sector. “From the presentations themselves, and discussions afterwards, it confirmed that service transformation in health will require innovative ideas and expertise from diverse stakeholders, including traditional practitioners, as well as those from industry. “Following the event, we have had some really worthwhile conversations where we were able to offer support and discuss potential projects the health innovation team may work on in the future.”

12 AWARDS

Lancaster student trio collect award at international business challenge A TRIO of skilled Lancaster University Management School students showed their business nous to impress judges and earn high recognition at an international competition. Dan Ashton, Yang Du and Aura Zhao picked up the Bronze Award at the annual International Youth Innovation and Enterprise Skills Challenge in London. The team were supported to take part in the event by the University Enterprise Team at Work in Progress. They competed against 15 other universities from the UK and China, using the SimVenture Business Simulations software to set up and run a virtual business. The challenge was to maximise a computer-based company’s value as they were presented with a series of events and tests, with all their decisions having an effect. They had to research a market scenario, decide where to spend money and where to make savings, where to target their products, and to who. Once they had completed their task, the team made a presentation on their efforts, which was prepared while the 90-minute simulation ran, which they delivered in both English and Chinese. Despite having far less experience than many of the other teams taking part, they impressed the judges with their efforts and were presented with the Bronze Award. They hope to return in future to do even better. Dan Ashton, a first-year Business

and Management, with a year in industry, student, said: “Compared to the rest of the teams, it was a new experience for us. Being able to get the award was a really good feeling, because we didn’t expect it. “We want to go back and have another go, if we could do it again, we know we could do it better.” Yang Du, a second year Finance student, added: “It broadened my knowledge of businesses, how they work and how they are structured – and it looked at all aspects, not just one area. It’s a good chance to plan something and to reflect on what needs to be improved. We’re looking

forward to a second chance, and to going back next year.” The competition helped all three students apply what they have learned through their courses, as well as enabling them to take the experience back with them when they returned to learning. Aura Zhao, who is in the second year of an Accounting & Finance degree, said: “By running the simulation, it deepened my understanding of the course I have been studying. It can all be related from the company we planned to the university course, and vice-versa. It’s

not like an exam paper, you have to apply what you know, but it’s in a real scenario.” Simon Harrison, Enterprise Programme Manager for Lancaster University, was impressed with how the team performed. He said: “This is a great example of how challenges and simulations can help students to develop the entrepreneurial capabilities – for example, collaborative problemsolving, strategic thinking, communication skills, commercial awareness – that employers expect from our graduates. "

Awards

Award for Lancashire construction boss LOYALTY and hard work have earned one of Redrow’s most respected directors a special achievement award. Construction director Keith Collard was presented with the accolade at the company’s recent Building Responsibly Awards, to mark and honour an outstanding career which has spanned 30 years and seen him rise through the ranks. Keith from Chorley, began his working life with Redrow as trainee assistant site manager in 1989, after starting as a forklift driver for the Whelmar Homes operation that Redrow had acquired two years earlier. But his passion for the job has seen him move constantly upwards to become one of its respected managers and he took on his current director’s role at Redrow Homes (Lancashire) 14 years ago. Praising Keith, Warren Thompson, Redrow’s regional chief executive, said: “It is perhaps because of the career path that Keith has followed that he has excelled in bringing many through to the position of site manager and beyond, from apprentices and those who followed the trainee route. “His is a passion that has been borne from his

own journey, keen to see others follow and flourish in his footsteps. Keith has always been very successful in growing his own, ensuring that all those who are part of his team are nurtured in the Redrow way – and the Collard way! “In doing so, he fosters stability and a commitment to quality, customer service and loyalty.” Keith’s is a career signposted by many awards and milestones. Married to Anne, who also works for Redrow, he was an early winner of the NHBC Pride in the Job Awards before guiding, supporting and encouraging those around him to commit to the same high standards. Many of his team have gone on to win Pride in the Job Awards, including the coveted Seal of Excellence, plus NHBC Health and Safety Awards. Lancashire site managers in Keith’s team have also won back to back national LABC Construction Professional Awards in 2017 and 2018. He is based at Redrow’s Lancashire division in Buckshaw Village, Chorley, which builds new homes across Lancashire, and parts of Greater Manchester and Merseyside – created when

Redrow acquired the Lancashire operation of Whelmar Homes in 1987. Keith said he was delighted and honoured to receive the special commendation: “It’s hard to believe that I will complete three decades with Redrow in June this year – not including the time I spent on Redrow sites before I was ‘on the payroll’. But every one of those decades, every one of those years, has been an absolute delight and this award means a lot because it is in recognition of all those years of work. “I am proud to work for a company with such a reputation not only for building homes with such quality, but for building and nurturing its staff in the same way – and it’s that which I treasure being a part of most. “As much as I enjoy my job, and as much as this award means, the pleasure comes from seeing young people come through the ranks like I did; and helping apprentices and site managers to develop their own careers and reach their potential. That is a huge part of what I do and it’s made easier by Redrow’s commitment to training and valuing people.”

Convene IT supports the region’s businesses

CONVENE IT, which has offices in Chorley and in the near future, in the Manchester area, provides cutting-edge IT support to over 170 organisations across the North West, including the Northern Automotive Alliance and Lyndhurst Precision Engineering.

Established more than a decade ago, the Chorley head quartered, full support IT company has 17 employees. They work with numerous sectors, including accountancy, education, automotive, engineering, recruitment, manufacturing and retail, providing their bespoke B2B consultancy, hardware configuration, disaster recovery, network services and server support services. James Donlan, Managing Director, Convene IT, said: “We support organisations with our complete IT solution. Our skilled engineers provide expert advice for both urgent and scheduled maintenance, alongside setting up and advising on the best and most trusted computer equipment and software that a business should use. “When a client phones us, an engineer always answers and we are immediately able to try and solve any problems, ensuring costly issues or downtime are

Fulwood business celebrates 25 years A PRESTON retail services company is celebrating 25 years in business and has grown from a spare bedroombased startup in Fulwood to a £14.5m turnover employer of 30. SuresiteGroup is also on target to break the £16.5m turnover barrier within three years. When Suresite was launched by company chair and petroleum industry expert Geoff Oldham in 1994, it was as a provider of H&S audits for fuel forecourts. A change in legislation meant that the fledgling firm’s consultancy services were in demand from petrol stations looking to sure up site safety. Many of the big names came on board, including Esso, Gulf and Jet and the Millennium City Retail Park firm now works with over 2,200 forecourts across the UK and Ireland. With a strong drive to diversify and a senior management team intent on cross-selling to customers, the company added a merchant services wing in 2004. Last year Suresite Card Services processed £2.6billion card payments and added convenience retailer Costcutter to its customer list. In 2014, Suresite branched into H&S training for forecourts – an obvious add-on to its established consultancy service- and in 2016, Suresite Wetstock brought to market the first real time 24/7 fuel monitoring

system. A world first in fuel leak detection, Suresite took 11 percent of the UK wetstock monitoring market share by its second year and last year took on customers in South Africa and America. For chief business development officer Keith Bevan, who has been with the company since 2012, it’s all in a day’s work. “You simply can’t stay still in business,” he said. “If you sit tight, you will very quickly fall behind the competition. “I strongly believe that Suresite Group is still thriving and growing as a company after 25 years because the senior management has also taken the attitude of ‘what next?’” Chief financial officer Martin Eastwood joined the company in 2018, from EnServe Group, a Macclesfield-headquartered £100m revenue division of a private equity company. He said: “It’s been a year of change and streamlining at Suresite that should see us fit to break the £16.5million turnover barrier within the next three years. “I am confident that last year’s restructure has put us in pole position to grow both turnover and profit –and to provide even higher levels of service to our international customer base.”

Geoff Oldham, company chair, said: “We’ve come a long way in 25 years and we couldn’t have done it without the amazing people who work for us. They not only give of their all,

but they make head office a warm and welcoming place to be. “I may not be around to see all of it, but here’s to the next 25 years!”

AFC Fylde makes history at Wembley

ON SUNDAY 19 May, AFC Fylde, formally known as Kirkham and Wesham FC, became the first club to win the FA Vase and FA Trophy. This success adds to the club reaching the Promotion Final for the Football League for the first time, eight

days prior. Since moving to Mill Farm in 2016, the club has made significant steps in developing the team, both on and off the field. Chairman David Haythornthwaite and CEO Jamie Roberts have

worked to bring in a team behind the scenes to drive the vision of the club to reach the Football League by 2022; a number the club display on the sleeve of their playing shirts. The additions of Luke Lambourne as Head of Media, Bethany Hushon as Commercial Manager and Katie Patchett as Fan Liaison Officer has taken the club to a new level in terms of fan engagement as well as brand awareness for their sponsors. With the current exposure and awareness of the club, AFC Fylde is becoming one of the clubs in the region to partner with. With the addition of “The Hotel at Mill Farm” to the facilities including Churchill’s Conference suite, Milano’s Restaurant and Bradley’s Sports Bar, the potential for growth for the ambitious club is clear to see. “To have seen the transformation from a small team playing behind a pub, to an established football club on the brink of the Football League has been remarkable,” said AFC Fylde Chairman, David Haythornthwaite. “Our desire to be the best at what we do, combined with investment in the right people behind the scenes, has helped us get to the stage we’re at. We’re confident that, with our recent additions, we’ll continue to go from strength-to-strength, and break records on and off the pitch.”

North of England-Israeli MoU helps Israeli companies access UK’s healthcare industries THE NORTHERN Health Science Alliance (NHSA) and UK Israel Tech Hub are celebrating as more than 30 Israeli companies have accessed support to help bring health and medical technology innovations to the North of England in the last year. A strong pipeline of healthcare companies in Israel have engaged with the NHSA in the 12 months since a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the NHSA and Israel was signed. The joint-working arrangement with the UK Israel Tech Hub was signed by the NHSA and British Ambassador to Israel David Quarrey at last year’s MIXiii-Biomed conference. The aim of the partnership was to increase collaboration between the two countries by offering support to Israeli healthcare companies to

establish research and a presence in the UK, specifically in the North of England. In the 12 months since the MoU, the NHSA has worked with 33 Israeli companies spanning the medtech, digital health and precision medicine sectors. The support provided ranged from advice on the UK health sector, evidence generation and clinical trials in the UK to building a UK value proposition. As a result of these interactions, there has been three submissions to conduct research and development in the North with a UK partner organisation and three proposals to run an evaluation or clinical trial in the region. Keith Miller, Head of Corporate Engagement at NHSA, said: “We have been delighted with the level

of interest and enthusiasm from the Israeli companies we have worked with during the last year. “Israel has a thriving life sciences industry that is generating exciting healthcare innovations that have the potential to benefit patients here in the North of England and the UK. The MoU has played a pivotal role in deepening links between the North and Israel, which has helped us build a strong continuous pipeline of healthcare companies from one of the most innovative countries direct to the North of England.” The NHSA returned to MIXiiiBiomed in Tel Aviv this month as, together with UK Israel Tech Hub and the UK BioIndustry Association, it led its first delegation of northern life sciences organisations to the leading medtech conference.

Made up of academics, industry and healthcare professionals, the delegation included representatives from NIHR Clinical Research Network, The AMR Centre, based at Alderley Park, Cheshire, Manchester Science Partnerships, Leeds University, and the Northern Powerhouse at the Department for International Trade. Samuel Cronin, Healthcare Innovation Manager at the UK Israel Tech Hub, said: “We are delighted to be working alongside the NHSA and to build together lasting bridges between organisations in the UK and Israel. We hope these 30 and more Israeli companies will lead the way to more opportunities for strategic innovation partnerships between the two nations and to help support the UK’s healthcare system in the future.”

Forward Thinking helps businesses reach new heights BURNLEY-based, Forward Thinking, is helping businesses in the North West reach their goals, with a unique new coaching program. Established by the former managing director of Lanway, Andrew Henderson, Forward Thinking offers business leaders from micro level and upwards, the chance to get really clear on their business & personal goals, and to create a unique visual

“map” to achieve them. Andrew, one of the latest members of the fantastic Burnley FC Business Hub utilises workshops, with numerous businesses and ‘live’ sessions, with boards of directors, coupled with online courses, to help guide business leaders to success through his Success GPS coaching program. Forward Thinking has already helped more than 20

businesses in sectors such as professional services, digital marketing, textiles, insurance and vehicle leasing, since launching in January this year. In addition to coaching business leaders, Andrew is also leading by example, since he is preparing to climb Mount Kilimanjaro later this year, with other business leaders, in aid of the

Honey Rose Foundation. The Honey Rose Foundation is the only UK charity to grant wishes to those over 40, with cancer and other life threatening illnesses. Andrew, said: “We work with business leaders, on both a commercial and psychological level, since a business leader’s personal ambitions are

just as important as their business ambitions, they are intertwined. “Our six-step process, based on tailored workshops and online courses, helps business leaders set the right goals for the right reasons, create a step by step plan for achieving them, and ultimately helps them grow their business as if they are on autopilot!"

£13m package to help Lancashire people develop their skill levels and improve their job prospects has been unveiled The Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has launched a new community grants scheme and recommissioned three existing projects with the Education Skills Funding Agency, all funded by the European Social Fund (ESF), which together will help around 8,000 local people between now and July 2021 to move into employment, apprenticeships or further training or progress in work. The ESF-funded projects Access to Employment, Moving On and Skills Support for the Workforce, have been recommissioned because of their success in their first three years. Since they were set up in 2016, Access to Employment and Moving On has supported 8,500 local people combined, while Skills Support for the Workforce has worked with 800 businesses. The three programmes delivered £27m of support in total to local people. Dennis Mendoros, LEP Director and Chair of the ESIF Committee, which has oversight of the ESF programme in Lancashire, said: “We deliver some of

the most successful ESF projects in the UK. Over the past three years, they have made a significant difference to many people’s lives in Lancashire, helping thousands of local people to learn new skills and improve their job prospects. “They have had a huge impact in terms of fostering the economic health and well-being of the Lancashire’s workforce, promoting inclusive growth and maximising social value for the benefit of the local community as a whole. “They are an essential part of the LEP’s strategy to drive economic growth and job creation, particularly in key sectors like construction, manufacturing, financial and professional services, creative and digital and health and social care. “So our decision to continue them – and launch an exciting, new community grants scheme – is great news for local people and Lancashire as a whole. “I would strongly encourage any individuals or community projects who feel they could benefit from any of the support we offer through our ESF projects to get in touch to find out more.”

MSDUK diversity event inspires EMB leaders MSDUK’s first North-West region supplier diversity day for Ethnic Minority Businesses (EMBs) took place at the Manchester Marriott Victoria & Albert hotel. securing £735m worth of business for EMBs. The organisation inspires the next generation of ethnic minority founders, offering them a platform to showcase their innovative ideas, and provide them access to knowledge, investment and markets to help them grow and achieve their dreams. The panel comprised of leading lights of industry; Nick Caton, Director of Procurement at Barclays; Aysha Kazi, CEO at Ark Talent; Azeem Khan, CEO at Gemini Group; Dennis Ford, International Sourcing

Leader at Cummins and Jason Black of Enterprise Holdings. Among the guests was Bipin Patel, Business Consultant at Blackburnbased, Guide Security, who said: “I believe that diversity is one of the big pluses that this region has, but translating that to profitability is quite a steep journey,” “MSDUK is leading that charge. We’re here to find out how they’ve done that. People like Mayank have spent a lifetime overcoming some of these challenges and bringing down the barriers.” Reet Dhallu, Lead Regional Membership Manager (GM North and South) at Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, added: “It was of benefit to our members as it allowed them to connect with other businesses in the area. It widens our membership and gave members the opportunity to connect with diverse businesses. Attendees make some useful connections with some of these corporate organisations.” Nick Caton offered advice on the opportunities in public and private sectors: “Local Authorities have social value policies in procurement and use that as part of their procedure. “In the private sector, diversity is becoming more important. In Barclays, we have a very big supplier diversity programme. We’re seeing a change where businesses are taking the diversity agenda more seriously because our

customers want it. The commitment is real and is flowing through into procurement processes, so take advantage because the time is now.” The importance of networking was emphasised by Aysha, who commented: “It’s about relationship building and networks. You may be part of MSDUK and go to a conference that you think isn’t relevant, but everyone is connected to another person and they may know someone who has something for you. And once you have a relationship, maintain it.” The discussion was followed by a presentation by David McQueen on creating the perfect pitch. In his presentation, he said: “As a business owner, you’re always pitching – to staff, customers and stakeholders, and even through things like blogs and networking. You’re talking about what you’re really passionate about, so concentrate on the human element. If you’re fired up, you’ll do a good job.” He also talked about the importance of really engaging with people: “If you can make people smile, you’ll take them on a journey.” Also impressed was Godwin Anthony of Ascent Leadership: “I joined MSDUK a few months ago and I’ve been to a few events and I’ve been blown away by the calibre of people and what they’re promoting – diversity in the workplace. It’s amazing.”

US Ambassador visit marks milestone 500th delivery for world’s largest defence programme THE United States’ Ambassador to the United Kingdom has visited the hub of BAE Systems’ advanced manufacturing to mark a major delivery milestone in the world’s largest defence programme. Robert “Woody” Johnson toured the company’s production facilities in Samlesbury, Lancashire where the aft fuselage of every F-35 Lightning II is produced. His visit coincided with the delivery of the 500th aft fuselage from the facility and he met with employees producing the aft fuselage, horizontal and vertical tails of the jet which is operated by both the US Air Force and the Royal Air Force. Across its global enterprise, BAE Systems delivers up to 15% of every F-35 built and has a vital role in the ongoing development and sustainment of the aircraft for customers across the globe. Ambassador Johnson, said: “Lancashire has a very proud history manufacturing planes for the British military and it is fantastic to see that tradition continuing strong to this day. “The highly skilled workers at the BAE Systems facility in Samlesbury are now helping to produce the most sophisticated fighter jet the world has ever seen: the F-35. “Combining incredible stealth with supersonic speed, the F-35 is a game changer which will play a vital role in America and Britain’s collective defense for decades to come. “The programme is led by prime contractor, US firm Lockheed Martin, with BAE Systems and Northrop Grumman making up its principal industry partners.” Ambassador Johnson was joined on the tour by Charles Woodburn, BAE Systems Chief Executive, Chris Boardman,

Group Managing Director for Air, and Tom Fillingham, Senior Vice-President of the US Programmes business which leads BAE Systems Air Sector’s role in the F-35 programme. Charles Woodburn said: “It was an honour for us to host the Ambassador and show him the unique capabilities BAE Systems’ people bring to the F-35 every day. “We secured our place on the programme through our engineering expertise and worldclass manufacturing, but it is the ability, commitment and passion of our people across the world that continues to keep us at the heart of the programme. “Delivering the 500th aft fuselage of the aircraft is a major milestone for us, and we know by continuing to deliver we will

maintain our place on the programme and our strong relationship with the US.” Greg Ulmer, F-35 Executive Vice President and General Manager at Lockheed Martin, said: “Lockheed Martin is proud to partner with the UK and our industry partners to design, build and sustain the world’s most advanced fighter jet. In addition to delivering unmatched capability for defence forces, the F-35 is strengthening globally and industry partnerships, while driving economic growth. BAE Systems’ 500th aft fuselage delivery is a significant milestone for the program and another demonstration that the F-35 enterprise is ramping up production, improving efficiencies and reducing costs to meet growing demand.”

SEL Business Languages gives manufacturer a wider global audience HORWICH based SEL Business Languages Ltd is celebrating the completion of a new key, complex translation service for a client. The work involved the translation of 20 pages into 12 different languages, giving their client the capability to inform its customers in their native language. The proven language solution - translating the two manuals for a welding mask manufacturer based in Bedfordshire - was complex since they needed to be translated simultaneously into some of the world’s more unusual languages, including Czech, Hungarian and Finnish, three of the hardest languages to master. Working with their international partners and a network of over 3000 native-speaking professional linguists, the company offers a service to translate

more than 60 languages. This service is enhanced by SEL Business Languages having partner offices in China, Italy, Germany, Spain, Russia and Latvia. SELBL's Graeme McLeish, commented: “It took our team only five working days to translate the manuals into 12 different languages, giving the product a far wider international market. It can now be used both in print and digitally. “The manufacturer is delighted with its expanded global reach and commended the excellent-value, rapid service delivered by SEL Business Languages. “We specialise in translation, interpreting and language training services

for a range of disciplines, across many industries and sectors, including manufacturing, engineering, automotive, legal and digital. Our work is recognised by the Department for International Trade and we are ISO 9001: 2015 selfaccredited.”

Launch event celebrates Blackpool: The Place for Business A NEW marketing initiative has been launched which positions the Blackpool area as a leading location for business investment in the UK. Taking place at Blackpool & The Fylde College’s Lancashire Energy HQ, the event highlighted new data revealing significant strengths across industry sectors including aerospace and advanced engineering, energy, advanced materials technologies and food manufacturing. The event also emphasised Blackpool’s transformed town centre offer to service sector businesses. The launch of ‘Blackpool: The Place for Business’ marks the beginning of a digital campaign which will celebrate the town’s business strengths and regeneration successes. The project aims to leverage the online support of the

local business community to put Blackpool on the global stage for business investment. The initiative is backed by numerous high-profile supporters from both the business community and public sector bodies, such as Cllr Mark Smith, Cabinet Member for Business, Enterprise and Job Creation: “When people think of Blackpool, they often picture tourism. What they don’t see are the impacts of our £1bn Growth and Prosperity Programme which includes our leading Enterprise Zones which house world-class businesses, our first rate upgraded Winter Gardens conference centre, our transformed town centre offices and the fact that Blackpool will be the first town to roll out 5G networks for digital start-ups.”

Speaking to an audience of business leaders, key speaker Nick Smillie took to the stage to reveal some insights from recent research. “The Blackpool area provides investing companies with direct access to UK-leading industry clusters, high-quality property and site solutions and a large-scale, skilled workforce. “The area saves businesses money too, with significant labour and property costs advantages versus key competitor UK locations. It all adds up to a powerful location proposition for businesses in the town’s target sectors.” Other speakers at the event included: Claire Lee, Director of New Business at Blackpool and The Fylde College; Mark Bowen, Business Gateway Manager at

Lancaster University; Martin Long, Commercial Property Partner for the local property market and collaboration between the public and private sectors at Napthens Solicitors; and Nick Gerrard, Growth and Prosperity Programme Director at Blackpool Council. The event ended with a call to action – urging the business community to become advocates for the campaign, sharing messages and online content through platforms including LinkedIn and Twitter. “Blackpool has a great offer for investing business,” said Nick Smillie. “Working together, we intend to get that message out to companies in the UK and internationally, to position Blackpool firmly as a thriving business location.”

A tailored approach to meet your business needs In November 2018, Nelson and Colne College and Accrington and Rossendale College completed a successful merger to create a single college, building on the strengths of both institutions to ensure the highest quality education and technical skills for all. The success of our local communities, employers, partners and economy sits at the heart of all we do. We have forged valuable partnerships and a shared vision with like-minded organisations and individuals, creating a network of opportunity and excellence.

R gr fe

The newly-merged College now offers over 90 Apprenticeship frameworks and standards that can also be delivered within the workplace to upskill existing employees within the following sectors: Business and Finance

Manufacturing

Hair and Beauty

Sales, Marketing and Procurement

Engineering

Catering and Hospitality

Digital and IT

Health and Social Care

Sport and Leisure

Leadership and Management

Education and Childcare

Construction

Retail

The best investment you can make for your business We believe that Apprenticeships can significantly improve the performance of every business. What makes Apprenticeships and training with us unique? We have a long and proud reputation with businesses across East Lancashire and beyond, and employers choose us because we make sure our Apprenticeships and training are flexible and tailored to meet business needs. Examples of what we can offer include:

Bespoke workshops

Toolbox talks

Short courses such as First Aid and Health and Safety

Leadership and Management qualifications

Apprenticeships by Nelson and Colne College and Accrington and Rossendale College are dynamic and are shaped by the power of three: the college, the employer and the Apprentice.

Rosslee Construction Managing Director Gary Clarkson (centre) pictured with Principal Amanda Melton and Apprentice Oliver Shipston.

Gary Clarkson, Managing Director at Rosslee Construction, said: “We’ve been employing Apprentices from Accrington and Rossendale College for over 30 years as they are valued assets to the company, who contribute greatly to its performance. “We will always have first, second and third year Apprentices as they are integral to the success of the business.

We ensure that all Apprentices have first-class support, a highly experienced Trainer Assessor and that each business has a dedicated Account Manager as a key point of contact throughout the partnership.

“When an Apprentice progresses to Level 3, they are skilled professionals that play a pivotal role within the company. Watching an Apprentice grow into a skilled tradesman is extremely satisfying.

Our results are reflected by the time and commitment we put in to ensuring there is a cultural match between Apprentice and employer – and this has ensured our Apprenticeship achievement rates are consistently 20% above the national average.

“One of the site managers started out as a College Apprentice, so there are always progression opportunities after completing an Apprenticeship.”

you to Lloyd BMW and all of the other businesses which attended the event and raised vital funds for a very worthy and local cause. Pink Link contributes to The Alison Rose Review LAST year, the government commissioned Alison Rose, Deputy CEO, NatWest Holdings and CEO, Commercial & Private Banking to identify areas that will help women to succeed in business. The Alison Rose Review of Female Entrepreneurship recognised key areas for development. These include access to advice and support for funding and investment, help to manage family care costs and encourage more flexibility for familial responsibilities, increased networking and mentoring opportunities. Following the report, the government is establishing a new code,

Investing in Women which will report annually. Financial institutions will be encouraged to sign up to provide a programme of tailored support which will help women to achieve their goals. The aim is to encourage women to start a business, scale up an existing one or to reach the pinnacles of success in their chosen career. With ten years’ experience connecting, supporting and empowering female entrepreneurship, Lancashire businesswoman, Coral Horn of Pink Link, was invited to contribute to the report. Pink Link has been at the forefront of providing women with local networking groups,

platforms to promote their business and recognising their achievements through the Enterprise Vision Awards. Horn represented the region at The Rose Review reception in Coutts and Co Bank in London and said: “I was privileged to be asked to take part in the Rose Review. We see the positive impact that networking has on women. It helps them to share and access knowledge, build relationships and gain leads and introductions. I meet women who are driven, ambitious and determined to succeed. My advice is to think BIG and aim for

the moon! Together we will find ways to overcome barriers.” The government replied to The Rose Review stating that the economy is missing out on a significant untapped pool of entrepreneurial talent and the businesses they could create. Robert Jenrick MP, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury was present at the reception. He said: “We’re determined to close the funding gap for female entrepreneurs. Today just 1% of venture capital investment goes to female led businesses.”

500 people support St John’s Hospice in annual Colour Dash AN incredible turnout saw more than 500 people don their running shoes and pristine white t-shirts for the second annual Garstang Colour Dash. Every rainbow splattered ‘dasher’ that crossed the finishing line 5km later was welcomed back with a medal after running, walking, skipping and jumping through clouds of colour along the route. The family fun run raised more than £10,000 for St John’s Hospice in Lancaster, money which will go towards the £4.5million needed every year to keep the hospice operating. Karen Crossley,

community fundraiser for St John’s, said: “We are so delighted that once again Garstang has come out to support the hospice and help to raise much needed funds to help up continue our vital work. “The town has welcomed this event with open arms and we cannot tell you how grateful we are for the efforts of everyone involved, from the organising team at St John’s, our main sponsor Vincents and the other businesses in the town which have shown incredible support.” Lancashire law firm Vincents Solicitors was once

again the headline sponsor, helping to cover costs for staging the event so that all the money raised goes straight into the charity’s coffers. Vincents Olivia Robinson and Chris Mathews kicked off the race with colour canons covering the dashers as they set off from Cherestanc

Square outside Booths. From there the crowds ran down the high street to the River Wyre, up along and over through the fields towards the ruins of Greenhalgh Castle and back to the square for the big finish. Colour stations along the route were manned by representatives of the other sponsors, Towers & Gornall, Garstang Country Hotel, Nationwide Building Society, and Display Wizard, who pelted dashers with environmentally friendly paint powder as they ran through. The first runner made it back in 17 minutes while others took a more leisurely

pace and got round within the hour. Lisa Lodge, head of Vincents Garstang office, ran with her family, friends and colleagues. She said: “Everyone had such a good time, the weather was beautiful and all you saw were big smiles on everyone’s faces. It really was lovely to see so many families out enjoying the sunshine and raising money for charity together. There was a real buzz in the town with so many people coming together to have a good time for a great cause, creating a really fantastic atmosphere.”

CoolKit reduces carbon footprint BURNLEY-based CoolKit Ltd has paired up with fellow Burnley Bondholder, Low Carbon Energy, to reduce its carbon footprints. Andrew Wearing, Operations Director at CoolKit explained: “Our ISO 14001 accreditation demonstrates our commitment to CoolKit’s environmental management standards. Having received an 100% pass rate in 2018, it was time to look at what else we could do to maintain the high standards achieved to date.” “Having spent time and resources controlling our waste segregation and minimisation, pollution prevention and reduction in resources used within our manufacturing operations, it made sense to turn our attention to other possibilities, such as solar panels to create a source of renewable energy.” Low Carbon Energy, a leading multi-service renewable energy company, attended the manufacturing headquarters in Burnley earlier this year and installed 240 solar panels covering a total of 396m2 of roof area. Ged Ennis, Director at Low Carbon Energy, explained: “The installation work carried out took only one working week and we performed a full turn key operation.” “The solar panels will generate around 58,500 kWh of renewable energy per year, saving over 30 tonnes of carbon and £5,000 over the twelve months period. With a payback of less than 5 years and 25 years guarantee on the panels, it made total sense for CoolKit to add this source of renewable energy to their operation.” Andrew added: “It has been an absolute pleasure to carry out this project with a local company and fellow Burnley Bondholder. The service and installation quality received from Low Carbon Energy has been second to none.”

Blackburn’s first emergency weather initiative to support rough sleepers hailed a success A NATIONAL initiative that Blackburn Council adopted for the first time this year has been hailed a success by The Salvation Army’s homeless centre that supported it. Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) is a guidance designed to support local authorities to provide emergency weather responses in order to prevent deaths of people sleeping rough during winter. The local authority’s Housing Needs and Child Action North West (CANW) Street Reach teams joined forces with The Salvation Army’s Lifehouse in, Bramwell House, Blackburn, to roll out the programme which helped over 100 people, providing 400 safe nights and over 4,000 hours of emergency accommodation for the rough sleepers of Blackburn. Bramwell House, located on Heaton Street, opened its doors for emergency accommodation in the cold weather from 9:00 pm until 8:30 am during the months the initiative was activated, ensuring no rough sleeper was left out in the cold. Colin Mottershead, service centre manager at The Salvation Army’s Bramwell House said: “This is the first year that Blackburn has activated SWEP and we were only too pleased to support the protocol and engage with those accessing the facility. “It is critical that local organisations work together to support the fight against homelessness, nobody should have to sleep rough and the cold weather exposes how hard life can be on the streets. Extreme temperatures can kill and for the vulnerable it can be a matter of life and death making them even more vulnerable. “All teams worked hard over the four month period to get people safely indoors, providing a warm and secure place to stay and we have continued to work with and support those individuals to prevent them having to go back out on the streets.” Blackburn Council activated its inaugural SWEP initiative for the first time in December 2018 which came to an end on Sunday, 31 March.

Bramwell House provided emergency accommodation to rough sleepers and the council provided the centre with security staff for the overnight hours. Steve Richards, Housing Needs and Support Manager at Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, said: “I would like to thank everyone involved for their efforts in activating SWEP. Partnership work is vitally important in situations like this and all teams worked really hard to make people’s situations a little safer and warmer. We are all really pleased we could offer a safe, warm and caring environment and as well as help and support in getting off the streets.” Change Grow Live’s Inspire Service in Blackburn also supported the roll out of the protocol, providing a substance misuse outreach worker and nurses. Gem Smith, Targeted Engagement and Recovery Manager at Change Grow Live’s Inspire service in Blackburn said: “Change Grow Live’s partnership with the Salvation Army in Blackburn has really helped our Inspire service to reach more people in need of our services. The weekly drop-in service at the Salvation Army’s Bramwell House has provided a valuable opportunity to provide aid, support and useful information to individuals dealing with homelessness, many of whom have complex needs and are using drugs or alcohol. “In particular, our collaboration as part of the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol has enabled rough sleepers in Blackburn to receive shelter from the elements, as well as wider support to address and manage issues arising from substance misuse. Following the success of this partnership, Change Grow Live’s dedicated Inspire worker has accepted an invitation to continue to attend weekly sessions hosted by the Salvation Army.”

place to be in business right now. “What I love about BNI is that it’s local businesses helping one another and working collaboratively to get the most from the business opportunities that are available to all of us. “BNI is like a community and our success comes from getting the right people in the group. We’re really fortunate to have a fantastic set of people already, and we are always welcoming visitors to come along and see if it’s something that could work for them too. SPAR launches new partnership with Burnley Community Kitchen PRESTON-based James Hall & Co., SPAR UK wholesaler for the North of England, has launched a new initiative with Burnley Community Kitchen, enabling SPAR customers to support their local foodbank by collecting donations in ten SPAR stores across Burnley, Accrington and Pendle. In addition to collecting in-store donations, James Hall & Co.’s company owned bakery, Clayton Park, is also donating weekly surplus stock to the charity, providing much needed bakery products for the charity’s regional breakfast club. Paul France, Deputy Chief Executive Officer at the Burnley Community Kitchen said: “We are thrilled to have developed this relationship with James Hall & Co. and donations from SPAR customers are not only enabling us to provide donations for local residents but helping us to educate the local community on how to maintain a healthy diet on a budget, whilst learning basic cookery skills in our on-site kitchen. “Burnley has the second highest rate of child poverty in Lancashire, and the bread rolls and loaves provided by Clayton Park Bakery will help to ensure that children within the region receive a regular and nourishing breakfast, working with local primary schools and existing partners to develop and deliver this vital service.”

Enterprise Zone planning application submitted PLANS have now been formally submitted for Phase 1 of the development at Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone including the creation of new business and industrial units, a sports village and a new eastern gateway access road. The outline planning application is an early step in delivering the planned first three year investment of £28.8m allocated for the redevelopment of the 144 hectare Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone and has been lodged by Prestonbased architecture planning and surveying practice Cassidy + Ashton on behalf of the Enterprise Zone, with both Blackpool Council and Fylde Borough Council. The area of proposed development within Phase 1 will cover approximately 33 hectares to the south east of the Enterprise Zone, with the application site lying within both Blackpool and Fylde Borough Councils, though predominately Blackpool. It sets out a blue print to relocate the existing Common Edge Playing Field football pitches, including new facilities for AFC Blackpool so that land is unlocked for much needed industrial development and to create more jobs for the area. It is expected that up to 25 parcels of serviced land could be brought forward during Phase 1 and work is expected to be completed by 2023. Amy Johnson Way on the existing business park will be linked to the new spine road by a roundabout providing access from Common Edge Road, Marton before it meets Queensway. The outline application includes plans for up to: • 90,000 sq m – industrial floorspace (B1, B2 & B8) will be created to the north of the site adjacent to the existing business use on the EZ • 7,725 sq m – leisure use D2 which will include a mix of facilities including fitness studios and changing rooms, a nursery (D1), tennis/

netball centre and rifle club 323 sq m – retail (A1) 300 sq m – café and/or sports bar (A3) Up to 57 houses (C3) 2 x artificial 3G sports pitches and stadia facilities for AFC 10 grass sports pitches with floodlighting A new cricket pavilion Ancillary elements including a new access road, car park, sub-station, public open spaces Alban Cassidy, director at Cassidy + Ashton, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be involved in this major project to breathe new commercial life into such an important and historic location in Blackpool. Getting the site operating at its full potential has long been a strategic goal of the council and its wider stakeholders. We’re thrilled to be advising them as they seek to capitalise on the site’s Enterprise Zone status.” Cllr Mark Smith Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Enterprise and Economic Development said: “This application is for the first phase of the masterplan which will see the south eastern part of the site delivered including the first part of the new spine road. Relieving congestion in the local area is a primary concern for local businesses and residents and I’m delighted to see plans taking shape to address this, as well as making good provision for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. “Delivering new industrial sites is a priority for Blackpool to meet increasing local demand but it is also great to see improvements being made to the sports and leisure facilities in the area to promote physical exercise, healthy lifestyles and community facilities that everyone can enjoy.” • • • • • • •

A simple checklist can help you start! • Who do you want to invite? (business sectors) • • • • •

• Date? Give yourself at least two months to invite people and confirm, but also look at What do you want to achieve? (success criteria) what else is happening on your chosen date. business, so make sure you do your homework. So you have successfully completed your event. That's it, thanks... wrong! You already have set yourself a goal for what are you are wanting to achieve, so follow it up. Thank them for their time, give them an incentive to do some business with you, ask them for feedback, what ever you decide you need to keep the dialogue going or it will be a wasted exercise and turns into just a great time with no outcome. You have done the hardest part, so do the easy bit and speak to the delegates, you could be pleasantly surprised. Sales are based on relationships, build that relationship before, prior and for ever after.

THINK outside the box! Every event style has its own USP, but who understands their perfect audience better than you? As previously discussed in Business Lancashire, the event arena and venues available is amazing with so many different options available. To provide you with a list of unique and common event types would take a number of pages, so instead, here I have found a few different things to consider! Unique and that bit more fun! • Lucardo Rawtenstall Escape Rooms - An experience which until recently, I would never have thought of. Great for all age groups • Golf - Plenty of quality courses to choose from • Go Karting - A popular place is Three Sisters in Wigan, who have a number of packages available • Bowling - Right in the heart of Preston at Preston Guild Hall, but I'm sure there are many other independents • Cooking - Northcote Manor offer bespoke cookery courses, like a number of other places • Clay Pigeon Shooting - Various locations around the county • Archery - A selection of Lancashire venues, including Samlesbuty Hall • Barge hire - A number of places are available including and not exclusive to, Lancaster Canal • Curling - Recently added to Lancashire's portfolio at The Flower Bowl, Garstang • Health retreat - Certain hotels offer corporate packages which include, sedgeway, lunch and spa facilities We have listed a few ideas for you to consider, but this is just the start of the event, after completing the fun bit, will you be having lunch, is it close by? Does the event supplier have a venue to have some food? All of the above makes your event a little different and more importantly builds a relationship with the attendees. Think about it, everyone of these activities will have an element of discussion, making the next part of the event a very relaxed and a happy time. Also an element of competition can come into play, plus a bit of getting to know people, who will not to forget the memorable experience.

Lucardo Rawtenstall announces new Escape Room challenge LUCARDO Rawtenstall will be adding another Escape Room challenge, bringing the total number of Escape Rooms at their premises in Rawtenstall to four. Safe House, to be completed in August this year, will act as a prequel to the current popular Escape Room, Corruption. Now, players will need to gather as much evidence as possible against a gang leader, before a major twist takes place. Costing £15,000, the latest addition to the Lucardo Rawtenstall set of innovative team building offerings, comes as a result of the growing popularity for the attraction. This was recently emphasised when popular escape rooms blog, The Logic Escapes Me, gave the venue a five-star review. Simon Milnes, Co-Owner, Lucardo Rawtenstall, said: “Safe House, our latest addition, will fit perfectly alongside our other Escape Rooms, acting as a prequel to the very popular

Corruption, as well as increasing the capacity of Lucardo Rawtenstall from 18 to 24 guests, in order to better facilitate demand, especially from our corporate guests. “We’re really excited to offer Safe House, which will be ready in August, to our visitors. It’s just as challenging as our other Escape Room games and will feature an exciting twist.”

Making it memorable! THE event is looking great, you have your venue, your delegates are invited, sponsors are aware (if you have them), your experience and whatever else you are thinking about is taking shape, but you know every event needs to be remembered. So what are you going to do about it, how will you make it different, what will people talk about after it's over, a couple of ideas that may only be applicable to certain venues, experiences, event types and times of event, but should open your mind to the different possibilities! • Magicians - Not only can they keep a crowd entertained but they keep people talking • Musicians - A frequently used profession, but imagine an electric violinist walking around your guests playing modern music • Entertainers - Such as a fire eater, or a comedian. Remember, this is your event and you will know your clientele, so you will know what will likely appeal to them

Siemens goes WILD for wellbeing with Lancashire Wildlife Trust FOR many businesses, stepping outside is something done at lunch time or at the end of the day, as a means to an end. Thanks to a collective partnership between the Wildlife Trusts and manufacturing company, Siemens, the Lancashire Wildlife Trust has developed a ‘Wild Wellbeing Day’ programme at its flagship nature reserve, Brockholes, to take office workers outside to embrace the natural world and experience the mental and physical benefits of being outdoors. Run by the specialist MyPlace team, a pioneering partnership project with Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, the Wellbeing days are designed specifically to improve the mental health of all participants, using a range of ecotherapy techniques, following five key themes: Practical conservation work, Wildlife walks, Mindful

environments, Growing projects and Bushcraft. Debbie Rowlinson, Corporate Relationships Manager for the Lancashire Wildlife Trust added: “There is a strong relationship between levels of staff wellbeing and performance. Taking a positive, proactive approach to mental health at work can help you fully engage your staff.” A spokesperson from Siemens said: “It was really great spending time away from the office and bonding with colleagues I rarely see.

“The wellbeing session was a brilliant way to forget about work for a few hours, laughing and not talking about work. Seeing my team happy and relaxed gave me a great sense of achievement.” Benefits of a healthy mind in the workplace stretch further than the health and wellbeing of individuals, it also constitutes to the health of the business.
