1,000 new jobs created by Airport Enterprise Zone THE Enterprise Zone team at Blackpool Council has announced that more than 1,000 new jobs have been generated at Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone since its inception in April 2016. Simon Blackburn, Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “More businesses are being attracted to the site because of the additional commercial benefits that the Enterprise Zone status brings. Businesses

experiencing growth have more opportunities to realise their ambitions, expand operations and are taking advantages of the financial incentives and the design and build opportunities that are available at the Enterprise Zone and it shows in the increase in job numbers in the area.” “The jobs created are across a wide variety of the identified target sectors, including advanced

manufacturing and engineering, digital and creative, aviation and energy. The Council’s ambitions for the Enterprise Zone is to create up to 5,000 long term, sustainable jobs over the remaining 23 year lifespan of the Enterprise Zone status, and although this is an excellent start, we have a long way to go and a lot more hard work to do to reach the site’s full potential.”

CNC investment helps Merc Aerospace capitalise on £500,000 sales boost MOVING to ‘one-hit’ machining has delivered a Lancashire precision engineering specialist a £500,000 boost after securing a string of new orders. Merc Aerospace, which employs 50 people at its facility in Barrowford, has seen turnover rise to £4.2m thanks to a sustained investment drive that has included the purchase of two state-of-the-art CNC machines from the Engineering Technology Group (ETG). The company has replaced five older models with two Nakamura WT150IIs as part of its commitment to lean manufacturing and reducing lead times for customers including Airbus, AgustaWestland, BAE Systems and Bombardier. Equipped with industry-leading Fanuc and Smart X control software, the multi-axis CNC machines will drastically cut down on set-up and programming times, as well as freeing up over 150m2 of floorspace for future acquisitions. “We are focused on offering our clients the lowest total cost of acquisition solution for their precision components,” explained Richard Meade, Commercial Director at Merc Aerospace. “This is where the two Nakamuras really come into their own and ensure we live up to our promise, delivering fantastic control, speed and repeatable quality. Our customers have been so impressed with these new capabilities, that they’ve even placed new product orders with us, building on a £500,000 increase in annual sales for 2018. “ETG is a solution provider and engaged with us to explore which machines would help us explore new opportunities. It was a seamless transition from order placement to delivery and operator training, with the initial results being extremely impressive. “In particular, the turret

mounted power tooling ensures components with complex milled features are coming off virtually burr free and generally as a one-hit operation.” John Brimblecombe, Regional Sales Manager at Engineering Technology Group, added: “Nakamura technology has really grown in popularity in the UK, with many sub-contract manufacturers switching on to the outstanding performance and value for money it offers. “The WT150II provides up to 26kW of cutting power available for turning shaft-work with synchronized spindles, whilst the driven-tool motor power is suited for heavy cutting with very small tools.” “This is perfectly suited for the complex precision components that the customer specialises in. In addition, Merc has also benefitted from replacing five machines with two Nakamura WT150IIs, with the twin spindle and twin turret configuration and driven tooling and Y axis helping to remove milling

operations and reduce both set-up and cycle time considerably.” Merc Aerospace has over forty years’ proven expertise in serving the aerospace, defence, energy and oil and gas sectors. It offers 5-Axis milling, CNC turning, EDM and aerospace assembly services from its 20,000 sq ft factory, as well as capitalising on increasing demand for ‘fast make’ short lead time parts. Richard concluded: “Our ‘one-hit’ machining approach has really improved our productivity and, in turn, made us more competitive when looking to secure new opportunities both at home and overseas. “We’re not going to stand still though. The emphasis is on continuous improvement and we have already signed-off further investment, with delivery of a twin spindle, triple turret Nakamura NTY3-150 multi-axis lathe scheduled for April 2019.”

CYBER SECURITY

Countdown to new hacker headache for Lancashire businesses ANOTHER major new technology problem is heading towards businesses in Lancashire, with around half of them thought to be potentially affected. In January 2020, a large amount of standard Microsoft software reaches the end of its life. That means it may no longer be supported by Microsoft and may not be safe to use. This includes the popular Windows 7 operating system; Office 2010; and some software that powers company servers. “The problem is that once Microsoft ends the life

of this software, it will become a shining beacon for hackers,” warned local data security expert Philip Darnell at Darnell IT Solutions. “We already believe that some hackers are storing up vulnerabilities they have found in this software. By waiting till Microsoft stops supporting it, they effectively become unstoppable.” “Our advice to local companies is not to risk using this software past January 2020, and to get expert advice about replacing it this year. “It can take months to implement replacement software, so businesses shouldn’t leave it till the end

of the year.” The software that will be affected includes: • Windows 7 • Office 2010 • Exchange 2010 • Small Business Server 2011 • Windows Server 2008 Philip has written a non-techy guide, showing local business owners and managers how to identify whether they are using any of this software, just by what they see on their screen.

GROWTH STORIES

In association with Boost Business Lancashire

East Lancashire cleaning business doubles turnover A COLNE-based cleaning business has doubled turnover and grown its team by 80 per cent after receiving growth mentoring support through Boost – Lancashire’s Business Growth Hub. Unique Clean, Hire & Facilities has now gone nationwide with clients including Airbus, Barnfield Construction, Sir Robert McAlpine, Eric Wright, boohoo, Boundary Mill, and David Lloyd Clubs. The business was founded in 2010 by Glenn Stock who started out cleaning windows around Colne and Nelson. Glenn was introduced to Boost Growth Mentoring by Orvia who delivered the programme. Glenn had been a previous client when he

originally set up the business. Since receiving mentoring support, which began in February 2017, Unique Clean, Hire & Facilities has increased its team from 10 to 48 people, and doubled turnover to more than £1.2million. The business now operates as part of the Unique Group, set up by Glenn to manage the growth of cleaning and related services. At the initial diagnostic meeting with an advisor from Orvia, it was identified that his business was growing very rapidly and he needed professional mentoring support to streamline internal processes and prepare a strategic plan to ensure the growth was sustainable. Mentor David Grant, who has a wealth of experience in strategic

business planning was matched with Glenn and commented: “He was so busy doing everything, Glenn had little time to actually work on the business. Through careful mentoring, I was able to encourage him to spread responsibility across his team, allowing him more time to take stock and think about the growth of the business in a more strategic way, and to also free up time for other important things in life, like family and friends.” Glenn said: “After receiving the mentoring support, and reviewing staffing structures and job roles, the business can now grow in a more manageable way. By delegating operational activities to managers and

team leaders, I can focus on developing new business and expanding our services to existing customers. It is anticipated that growth for the Unique Group over the next year will see a further 15 members of staff and a 25 per cent increase in turnover. Glenn said: “There’s no doubt the valuable advice I received from David through the Boost Growth Mentoring service has been integral to the growth of the business. I am now in talks with one of my key customers to secure a 24/7 cleaning contract across their UK locations, as well as delivering more specialist cleaning services on a regular basis”.

Rosebud loan puts car firm in the driving seat

HAND-made classic sports car manufacturer Mirage Automotive Developments is in pole position to drive global sales, thanks to a £25,000 loan from Lancashire County Council’s Rosebud Micro fund. The loan has strengthened the Lancashire-based business’ cash flow position, enabling managing director Matthew Potts to accelerate production of the left-hand drive (LHD) variant of the Mirage GT model for overseas markets. Mirage Automotive Developments is a new car manufacturer offering modern engineered vehicles with early 60s classical looks and features. The business was formed in 2016, although the initial idea, design, prototyping and manufacture of ‘car

number one’ had been ongoing since 2009. The business currently manufactures one model, the Mirage GT. Every car is hand-made in the firm’s Blackpool factory and – for a limited time – vehicles can also be purchased in component form for selfassembly. The company is currently making car number seven. It has capacity to produce between six and ten vehicles a year but is looking to expand its premises and workforce to meet rising demand. Matthew said: “As orders for more vehicles were being taken, it was obvious there would be some early cash flow problems due to the nature of the supply chain and suppliers’ terms. Some form of cash flow relief was needed, and various options were available. “Not wanting to raise money in exchange for equity in the company, a short-term cash flow loan was the most appropriate solution. We came across Rosebud having found information on the internet about local authority backed schemes. After an initial discussion with Access to Finance adviser Jonathan Nelson, this seemed like the right path for us.” Matthew then met Sue Roberts from the Rosebud team, who structured the loan. After signing the final paperwork, the funds were available in less than a week.

Matthew continued: “The loan has certainly helped with cash flow. It’s given us the flexibility to renegotiate terms and contracts with some of our bigger suppliers to alleviate future cash flow restrictions. “As a result, we have been able to get the early vehicles manufactured on time, which has allowed us to accelerate our LHD product variant. Because of this, we were able to bring the launch of our LHD GT forward to November 2018 and start taking orders for LHD vehicles, as we start to grow the business.” Matthew now expects turnover to rise significantly as sales for RHD and LHD vehicles increase. At present, the business has more than 20 customers who have expressed strong interest in purchasing LHD vehicles worldwide. “The support from Rosebud has been excellent. From the very beginning of the process and the initial discussions, to the engagement with the Rosebud team and the contacts they have introduced us to. “Not only has the loan money provided cash flow relief and allowed us to accelerate our product range, but it’s been the help we needed to allow the business to grow and expand our sales and brand globally.”

Nelson and Colne College launches T Level qualifications to employers NELSON and Colne College has officially launched new T Level qualifications to over 50 employers in East Lancashire at a successful VIP event. T Levels are new two year technical qualifications that have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses to meet the needs of industry and prepare students for work. The qualifications are equivalent to three A Levels, and will combine classroom theory and practical learning, with a minimum 45 day Industry Placement with an employer. Nelson and Colne College is the only East Lancashire college selected to be a trailblazer for T Levels and will deliver the new gold-standard qualifications in Digital and Childcare from September 2020. Further qualifications will be rolled out in 2021 and 2022. Assistant Principal for Technical Education at Nelson and Colne College, Morag Davis,

said: “T Levels will ensure students are being provided with the right knowledge and experience needed to open the door to highly skilled employment, Apprenticeship or higher level study options. “By employing T Level students for an Industry Placement and creating opportunities for them to get on the career ladder, employers will not only bring the right skills and knowledge into their business but will boost the organisation’s reputation and strengthen its links with the local community.” At the launch, attendees heard about the benefits of T Levels as well as the minimum 45-day work placement. These include extra resources for day-to-day projects, growing the skills of the business, bringing in imaginative and new ideas, creating a cost-effective recruitment pipeline and an opportunity to provide a positive experience for a young person. Employers who

already frequently offer work placement opportunities to college students shared their experiences, highlighting the benefits young people bring to organisations. Gillian Cairns, Acting Associate Director of Education at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “Work experience is a vital opportunity for the Trust to take the brightest and the best young people into the wide variety of jobs we have in the organisation. “People automatically think of the clinical roles within the Trust, but there is a far greater breadth of career opportunities within the NHS including Business Administration, Catering, Engineering and IT. Managing Director of Wise Owl Creative Paul White said: “We have been really keen to encourage people to work in the creative industry in East Lancashire. One of the things we have struggled with is recruiting young talent as students head

off to university and don’t want to return as they don’t realise the opportunities that are here. “It’s about future workforce planning for us as a company as well as the short term impact of them contributing to the performance of the business by carrying out client work during the work placement.

“Our current work placement student Adrian, studying Level 3 Games Design at Nelson and Colne College, has been brilliant; he is committed, mature, creative, has fit in from day one and brings a totally fresh perspective. “We’re really looking forward to learning more about T Levels in the coming months.

I think they will bring twofold benefits to companies – they will get that short term positive impact of the student working for the organisation on the placement, and secondly, the raising awareness that great career opportunities are here on the doorstep of East Lancashire.”

Youngsters over the Moon

A LOVE of learning about the Moon attracted a sell-out crowd to a unique event organised by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). The first public event of its kind saw families with young children pack into UCLan’s Observatory at Alston to take part in the We Share The Same Moon project. The project, to develop resources for teaching science through storytelling, focused on folktales about the Moon. Youngsters listened to stories in the planetarium and got hands-on making a model

of the Moon. The weather affected the planned telescope viewing, so the attendees created a humanpowered scale model of the solar system instead. It took place to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing and the fun session was led by Dr Megan Argo, an astrophysics lecturer at UCLan, and professional storyteller, Cassandra Wye. Cassandra, said: “We Share The Same Moon is bringing to the UK for the first time the native American sky-lore storytelling tradition of teaching

science through story.” Dr Argo, added: “Our project aims to create resources that are useful in informal learning environments, not just school classrooms. This was our first public event where we tested our methodology and I’m delighted to say it was a big success. The enthusiasm of the attendees was excellent, and it was great to see so many young children engaging with the material and asking lots of questions.”

Lancashire gets £261,000 boost for grass roots digital skills provision LANCASHIRE is just one of four regions in the UK to have secured £261,000 of investment from the Government’s £1 million Digital Skills Innovation Fund (DSIF). The funding, from the department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), is specifically aimed at helping people underrepresented within the Lancashire workforce gain more digital skills and boost their employability. The programme will be driven by a range of grass roots initiatives including digital skills ‘bootcamps’, special events, workshops and courses. Advisers will also signpost people interested in developing more digital skills to training programmes already available in Lancashire. Some of the new projects Lancashire is aiming to roll-out

over the next 12 months include an IT Infrastructure training project which will help disadvantaged residents move into digital jobs and a digital marketing course for the unemployed and under-represented social groups which will lead to accredited qualifications sought by local employers. The DSIF grant is also a reflection of Lancashire’s commitment to delivering economic growth and creating jobs through the promotion and delivery of more digital skills and training. The UK announced the formation of a Local Digital Skills Partnership. In April 2018 a pioneering Government scheme which helps to identify gaps in digital skills provision and encourages partners from both the private and public sectors to work

together to address them. Developed by DCMS and the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership’s (LEP) Skills and Employment Hub, the initiative was launched with the support of several major companies including Google, TSB and Lloyds. Since then the network of private and public sector Lancashire partners has grown to over 60 organisations, including large employers, SMEs, education providers and employment support agencies, while Google is on track to meet its target of training 1,000 Lancashire small businesses via its Google Garage programme. The county has also successfully established Digital Lancashire, a notfor-profit membership organisation dedicated to accelerating the digital economy through public events, collaborative projects and a network

of high-profile ambassadors. Commenting on the DSIF award Kerry Harrison, Lancashire’s Digital Skills Partnership Coordinator, said: “This funding will give Lancashire’s rapidly growing digital skills programme a massive boost and it will help us embed more training and support into communities who may otherwise struggle to access such provision. This will be achieved through a range of tailored, innovative and targeted interventions which will be specific to the audiences we are trying to help.” Minister for Digital, Margot James, said: “The Lancashire Local Enterprise Partnerships presented an innovative new training programme which will help underrepresented groups into the digital workforce and they should be proud winners of the Digital Skills Innovation Fund. “Having a workforce that is representative of society is not only the right thing to do but also makes business sense. This funding will help the people of Lancashire achieve their potential as tomorrow’s data analysts, programmers, cyber security specialists and software developers.” Director of the Lancashire Skills and Employment Hub, Dr Michele Lawty-Jones, added: “The DISF award is testament to the extensive work we have already undertaken in Lancashire to deliver inclusive growth through improving the county’s digital skills base. “Through other initiatives, such as the Digital Skills Partnership, Digital Lancashire and our Lancashire Adviser Network, we are also working very closely with the private sector to promote and showcase the incredible benefits and career opportunities which digital skills can bring to all Lancastrians.”

The North Lancs Expo is back for its third year running LANCASTER and District Chamber of Commerce has announced that the third North Lancs Expo will take place on Friday 20 September and Saturday 21 September at the Lancaster Brewery. Unlike most other Expos where the focus is solely on Business to Business, the North Lancs Expo will focus both on Business to Business and Business to Consumer, with the Saturday’s emphasis being on training, skills, education and the future workplace. Following on from the theme set with the inaugural North Lancs Expo in 2017, the Friday will be a networking and information day for businesses, and the Saturday will be more of a family day, with interactive exhibits and displays. Whilst the title of the Expo is “North Lancs Expo”, The Chamber intends that it should represent the ever-growing co-operation of businesses around the Morecambe Bay Economic region, which is becoming a very economically important area within the energy generation, defence, education, and transport industries, as well as the new £41 million Health Innovation Campus at Lancaster University moving closer to fruition. The Health Innovation Campus

will create a world-class centre of excellence for innovation and research in health. By bringing together innovators, academics, entrepreneurs, businesses, local government, citizens and health care providers, it will drive advances in technologies, products and ways of working to improve health and healthcare. In addition, the exciting news that the Eden Project had chosen Morecambe as its preferred second site in the United Kingdom means that the area is gaining in importance as a growth hub for leisure and tourism. The supply chain that Eden promises to create will make the Expo a must for many businesses this year. Vicky Lofthouse, Chief Executive Officer of The Chamber, said: “This is the third year that we have run the Expo and each year gets more exciting with different exhibitors and industries. “We know the problems that the area faces, skills shortages and skills retention and the Expo is the first opportunity to talk directly to the next generations about what a wonderful area we have to live, work and play in. For too long the lure of the major cities has beckoned many of our youngsters away but we see no reason why we shouldn’t keep our future talent to ourselves."

A sauce manufacturer and a veterans’ charity have joined forces THE Nowt Poncy Food Company was founded in Rossendale, in 2016 and now has five successful sauces, which sell UK-wide. Co-founders Jools and Karen Abel wanted to make sure their business gave something back and as Jools’ father was in the Royal Navy and Karen’s father completed his National Service, they chose to link up with Veterans In Communities. The Haslingden-based veterans’ charity works all over East Lancashire and also parts of Greater Manchester. Karen, a former headteacher, and Jools, a time-served mechanical engineer, now work full-time building their business and brand.

Karen said: “We have lived in Rossendale for 30 years and we have read about VIC and the work the charity does in the newspapers. “When we first started the business we said that once we take on staff we wanted to employ veterans. “We would like to be able to offer veterans a chance and also help them to resettle in Civvy Street. As veterans, they will be used to following specific methodology and so they will have the skills that we are looking for. “The training they have had will be something they can bring to our business and we are very committed to the idea of giving back.” Nowt Poncy is currently seeking

to relocate its manufacturing base from Hyndburn to Rossendale and is looking for commercial kitchens that are maybe underused and could offer to rent their premises. All the company’s sauces are based on authentic recipes including an Italian tomato and basil, a New Orleans based Creole and a North Indian curry. They also supply seven types of pasta. The company’s products are available in 70 retailers across the UK, predominantly in the North. Nowt Poncy has also just begun supplying an outlet in London. Jools said: “To start with we will be providing VIC with a small percentage

from all the sauces we sell. “We are also offering to support social events that VIC arranges when they are providing catering and we will provide contributions towards emergency food parcels for veterans.” Operations Manager Bob Elliott, said: “We are very grateful to Nowt Poncy for the generous offer of support for VIC. “This is a partnership which we hope will be able to grow and develop over the years to the benefit of both organisations and hopefully will also lead to job opportunities for veterans who have left the armed forces and are transitioning to civilian life.”

Red Rose recognition, another step on MJH’s growth story PRESTON based MJH Accountants Ltd was delighted to be as a finalist in the Financial Services category of the prestigious Red Rose awards. The accountancy practice was founded in 2012 by Mark Hall and has grown to employ eleven staff and works with over 400, mainly SME clients, throughout the North West and beyond. Managing Director, Mark Hall, said: “This is the first time we have applied for these awards and to be down selected as a finalist, against such tough competition, was fantastic news, both for the company and our

staff. “I firmly believe that the differentiating forward thinking factor for us was our advanced use of technology with our clients, including online accounting software, linked to a client’s banking and credit control processes. This makes the process easier, quicker and ensures that clients are already trained for the introduction of regulatory legislation on “Making Tax Digital”, which is being introduced for all VAT registered businesses from April 2019. “Another differentiator is our people, who work closely with our

clients to help them develop effective business processes, such as achievable KPIs, focused strategy, understanding of competitor analysis and quality performance feedback. “Finally, we like to practice what we preach, both as an employer and as a good corporate citizen. All our staff have a clear career path and an associated staff development plan, to help them work towards their accountancy qualifications. Since 2014, we have employed two apprentices each year, who have been progressing through their accountancy qualifications with us

and our first two trainees qualified as Chartered Accountants last Autumn, which was marvellous to see. We also attend school career fairs, offering work experience placements and internships. “Supporting the local community is also important to us and our 2018 Christmas party raised £2,500 for the Foxton Centre, a local charity which is celebrating 50 years of working with vulnerable adults and children in and around the Preston area. We hope to raise a similar amount for our 2019 Charity of the Year, the Space Centre.”

Helping companies to escape and build their teams LUCARDO Rawtenstall is a fantastic escape room experience for both individuals (over 10 years of age) and teams from two to six, ultimately testing their ability to work together to solve clues and escape, before the time runs out. Established only nine months ago, Lucardo Rawtenstall is the first franchise from the well-known Manchester venue and is already a success, with over 1,100 teams trying to escape, involving over 4,500 participants. The venue is now starting to attract company teams, who see it as a great way to team build, bond and share the experience of working together under time pressure, to find a solution. An experience very recognisable in the business world. At their well-equipped Rawtenstall

base, you can choose from three games: • University of Magic: Dragon’s Heart – this is currently the most popular one • Corruption – a murder mystery focus • Gem Runner – a bank heist mystery Co-Owner, Simon Milnes said: “We are really pleased with the response to date, since we have welcomed teams from not only the UK, but also Europe and beyond. We are one of Lancashire’s developing entertainment assets and part of the Invest in Rossendale’s ‘Adrenaline Valley’ concept. “Our thrilling experience is now being utilised by companies. Working in partnership with nearby restaurant,

The Firepit, we are now offering team building exercises, which are different, memorable and fun, complemented by a dedicated room in the restaurant to undertake pre-briefing, outline key messages and receive post event feedback. Companies which have already gained the benefit, include Key Fleet, Avon Electronics and Cube HR.” Lisa Sourbutts, MD, Cube HR enthused: “Brilliant team outing! Look no further than these guys.” Open every day, but interested parties need to book, since each game takes approximately 90 minutes. Corporate teams particularly welcome

from Mondays to Thursdays. The venue was recently visited by local MP and Northern Powerhouse Minister, Jake Berry MP, who really enjoyed the experience and commented: “It was a pleasure to meet you and it is so encouraging to see a new rapidly growing company thriving locally on my doorstep, with customers from all over the world.”

Levity CropScience reveals latest product research in Abu Dhabi

LEVITY CropScience co-managing director, David Marks, has revealed its latest research for its innovative smart fertiliser, Indra, at the recent Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture. Held annually in Abu Dhabi, the Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture (GFIA) brings together international leaders in sustainable agriculture, exploring the latest and most effective agricultural technology available in the Middle East and North

Africa. Their award-winning Indra product helps crops become more resilient to the stresses of heat, drought, cold, salinity and UV, as well as improving growth, colour and promotion of antioxidants. At the Forum, David communicated how in its field research trials, Indra has restored the reintroduction of the lettuce crop in the area, following exposure to salinity.

He also highlighted how research in Ghana showcased that Indra reduced stress in Banana crop, in turn reducing the presence of Sigatoka infection in the crop. David said: “The GFIA was an opportunity for growers and distributors around the world to discover the latest research and innovations from leading organisations in the agricultural supply chain. "As well as exhibiting, Levity

CropScience used the opportunity to speak directly with growers and the agricultural supply chain, informing them of our latest, ground-breaking research regarding Indra. The smart fertiliser works particularly well in arid climates, allowing crops including; peppers, apples, potatoes and dragon fruit to remain resilient and reach their full potential in conditions of drought and high exposure to UV.”

Three more names added to Brexit business conference line-up THE North & Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the addition of three more guests to the Brexit conference line-up on 26 April. Jane Gratton, Head of Business Environment and Skills at the British Chambers of Commerce joins David Henig, UK Director at the European Centre for

International Political Economy (ECIPE) and Philip Hargreaves, Head of Access to Finance North West as the latest names to be added to an already impressive list of experts that will appear on the conference panels. The conference, taking place at Preston Guild Hall, is being organised by the Chamber of Commerce in response to local business

concerns about the lack of clear information and guidance available to help them prepare for the United Kingdom’s exit from the EU. Chamber Policy Manager Alan Welsh said: “Given that we are just a few weeks away from leaving the EU, many businesses are still unclear as to how Brexit is going to impact on them. We want to give local businesses

the opportunity to ask questions and listen to advice from leading experts and government officials on how to plan for Brexit and be ready to take advantage of new opportunities. “A recent Chamber survey highlighted four main Brexit issues that businesses would like more support with, so we have established an expert panel to discuss

each one at the conference – namely borders and trade, immigration and skills, regulatory alignment and finance.” Over 170 people have already registered for the event and the Chamber of Commerce is advising people to reserve places as soon as possible. The conference is free of charge and open to all businesses.

Chorley Council appoints WYG to produce Highways and Transport Strategy CHORLEY Council has appointed professional services firm WYG to produce a highways and transport strategy to address future challenges associated with congestion, travel choice, and sustainability. To create the strategy, WYG will review current transport provision and practice, highlighting the potential impact of new jobs and housing emerging from the Central Lancashire Local Plan, a joint effort between Chorley, Preston, and South Ribble to develop land over the next 15 years. The review will also identify schemes to provide the necessary capacity and connectivity between major trip generators to cope with the impact of future development. This includes investigating links between major roads such as the M6, M61,

and M65 motorways, as well as the local road network and the five train stations in the district of Chorley. The strategy will then determine a combination of measures to alleviate congestion and promote sustainable travel in those hot spots. Leader of Chorley Council, Alistair Bradley, said: “We are delighted to have WYG onboard and are keen to work with them in identifying what transport interventions are required across the district in the next 10 to 15 years. This commission will provide us with valuable insight and evidence to inform future decisions to secure investment in further local transport improvements to facilitate this growth.” Ben King, Associate and project manager at WYG, said: “Growth

and development have the potential to affect the transport network, so we look forward to working with the council to mitigate that impact by drawing out key issues and opportunities for the district between

now and the Local Plan coming to an end in 2036. We have a strong track record in working with local authorities to help them understand these complexities.”

Nixon Williams staff raise £20,000 for charity STAFF at Blackpool-based Nixon Williams have handed over £20,000 to two children’s charities after taking on a series of fundraising activities including long-distance bike treks, assault courses and fancy-dress competitions. The accountancy firm, which is part of professional services provider Optionis Group, will split the funds evenly between Alder Hey Children’s Charity in Liverpool and Keech Hospice Care in Luton. Alder Hey Children’s Charity plans to use the money to help build the new premises for the Alder

Centre, which offers support to bereaved families, whilst Keech Hospice Care will use the funds to support its work providing specialist care for adults and children with lifelimiting and terminal illnesses. Both charities were picked by Optionis employees across 11 UK offices and more than 650 staff, who are asked each year to decide on a charitable cause close to their hearts that all staff fundraising efforts can go towards. Speaking of the fundraising efforts, CEO Derek Kelly, said: “We are over the moon with the money we have raised this year. It is always

an exciting prospect when we elect a charity at the beginning of the year, and it is fun to unite our offices for a joint cause. “No doubt this year there was a lot of sore legs, but the end goal was to hand over the cheque to two amazing charities, and that was worth it! Alder Hey and Keech Hospice Care are very inspiring, and we are pleased we could fundraise such a large amount. “We completed six fundraising days this year, and we aim to continue that momentum in 2019 with our next chosen corporate

charity.” Nixon Williams raised the money through a series of fun challenges including cake bakes; a bring your dog to work day; a Halloween party and a Christmas fancy dress competition, which included both dogs and employees. That was on top of more physical challenges, such as Tough Mudder events and an office to office bike ride with staff riding 52 miles between Warrington and Blackpool. Elinor Freestone, Corporate Account Manager for Alder Hey Children’s Charity, said: “We would like to say thank you to Optionis

for their amazing donation which will go towards the development of the new Alder Centre; Alder Hey’s bereavement suite. The Alder Centre is funded directly through charitable donations and is dedicated to providing a comprehensive range of bereavement support services, tailored to the needs of those who have suffered the loss of a child. “The centre supports many families through some of their most difficult times. The support from Optionis is invaluable and will continue to help our families for years to come.”

St John’s Hospice launches Garstang Colour Dash 2019 GARSTANG is to be transformed into a sea of colour once again as St John’s Hospice announces the return of a major fundraiser to the town. Following the success of the inaugural event last year, the second Garstang Colour Dash will be held on Sunday, 12 May. Last year’s event saw more than 500 people turn out to run through a riot of colour and raise more than £10,000 for the hospice. This year, the charity has put 700 places up for grabs, and has set a target of £15,00, and registration is now open. Vincents Solicitors has once again pledged support as the main sponsor, providing financial backing to stage the event so that all entry fees and fundraising can go straight to patient care.

Zosia Muhler from St John’s Hospice, said: “We are absolutely delighted to bring the Garstang Colour Dash back for a second year. Last year’s event could not have gone better and the turnout was incredible. We had more people wanting to take part than spaces available, so we’ve increased capacity this year which will help us to raise even more vital funds. “The Colour Dash events are some of the most popular in our fundraising calendar and have raised more than £240,000 for patient care over the last five years. It’s wonderful that the people of Garstang are happy to host us once again and we look forward to adding to that total with another fantastic fundraiser.” The 5km route will remain the same, with everyone leaving from

Cherestanc Square outside Booths at 12 noon and heading up the high street to Hudson Park, down along the River Wyre and around Greenhalgh Castle before finishing back at the square. A series of colour stations along the route will see volunteers shower fun runners with clouds of coloured powder, making for an incredible spectacle. The four colour station sponsors have also returned after last year’s successful event: Display Wizard, Towers + Gornall, Nationwide, and Garstang Country Hotel. There will be even more family-friendly activities going on throughout the town during the day, including a fun warm up session, live music and stalls providing

refreshments, alongside the town’s usual array of shops, bars and restaurants. Lisa Lodge, head of Vincents’ Garstang office, said: “The response last year was so fantastic with so many people taking part and many more coming out in support, that we were thrilled when St John’s confirmed they were bringing the event back. “It will be a wonderful day for the community to come together and do something amazing for a really important charity, while having fun and showcasing all we have to offer here in Garstang. We know this year will be even bigger and better and hope to see everyone come out in support and to have a really great time.”

HBD and Barnfield acquire M6 corridor site HENRY Boot Developments (HBD) and Barnfield Construction have acquired an 18-acre strategic development site in Preston from Greater Manchester Property Venture Fund. HBD, part of the 130-year old Henry Boot PLC, is one of the most progressive property companies in the UK. With six regional offices, it is currently working with a commercial development pipeline exceeding £1bn. Barnfield Construction are contractors, developers and investors working with public and private sector partners and clients for over 40 years. Barnfield’s headquarters is in Lancashire managing over 30 live sites nationwide. The acquisition will see HBD and Barnfield bring forward an 18 acre scheme as part of a joint venture, the second such partnership between the two companies, with HB Barnfield currently delivering Beacon 62, an 11.5-acre strategic gateway site in Huyton. Named “East”, the proposed scheme is located at Junction 31A of the M6 in Preston and will deliver industrial and warehouse space, with units ranging from 6,700 sq ft through to 187,000 sq ft. The site already benefits from outline planning permission.

HBD and Barnfield have received notable early interest in opportunities at East, with discussions ongoing with several potential occupiers. Dean Thompson, Regional Manager of HBD Manchester, said: “We are bringing East forward at an opportune time given, the continued shortage of Grade A industrial and large-scale employment space in the North West, particularly along the M6 corridor. “It builds further on HBD’s strong track record in delivering top flight industrial schemes, with several currently underway throughout the country. Occupiers can rest assured that we understand what really matters when delivering schemes like this – quality will always be central to any HBD project.” Tim Webber, Managing Director of Barnfield Construction, said: “The site benefits from an excellent location along the M6 corridor, with almost immediate access to the UK motorway network. It’s an excellent opportunity for occupiers, whether for industrial or warehousing use, and the early interest we have seen is very encouraging. We look forward to securing the first occupier and getting started on site.”

Lancaster architects launches sustainable eco-pods

CELEBRATING their 40th year in business, Harrison Pitt Architects has announced the launch of ‘PlusPods’, focusing on the growing popularity of holidaying in the UK. The luxury modular structures can be linked in various combinations to create bespoke, adaptable accommodation. Working in partnership with specialist timber home manufacturer JT Construction, PlusPods have been designed for long term sustainability, with each constructed and insulated to the highest industry standards for new build house energy efficiency criteria, rather than the lower minimum required for camping and temporary residences. Sustainably sourced larch for the walls allows sympathetic blending with urban or rural surroundings, while an optional

sedum roof allows use in sensitive environments like National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs). Solar panels and a log-burner or pellet stove can also be designed in. Perfectly placed to support businesses capitalising on 2019 being dubbed the year of ‘exponential growth’ in the luxury staycation market, the pods are ideally designed for businesses looking to extend their accommodation portfolio by offering ‘glamping’. Richard Wooldridge, director at Harrison Pitt, said: “I had the idea for PlusPods while on a family camping holiday. I realised that a highly insulated glamping pod would be able to lengthen the tourism season by providing comfortable accommodation throughout the colder months; and would also make the PlusPod more cost effective and greener to run. "We’ve had applications for use as home offices, hotel garden rooms, and even low-impact small residence to our dedicated hotels and leisure team. Offering planning consultancy, project management and sustainability consultancy, we’re determined to keep innovating and challenging existing market leaders’ lower thermal standard glamping pods.”
