Flintoff called up for official Lancashire Ambassador role CELEBRATED Lancashire and international cricketer, Prestonborn Andrew Flintoff MBE has developed strong broadcast and business careers since his retirement from the professional game in 2010. But even with limited time to spare, he has agreed to take on the role of Lancashire Ambassador, which will see him working with Marketing Lancashire to help raise the profile of his home county. Commenting on his new role Andrew, said: “I’m a proud Lancashire lad and feel honoured to have been invited to become the first official Lancashire Ambassador. “One of the best feelings in the world is representing your county and country, whether that’s in the field of sport or in business. I’m looking forward to working alongside fellow Lancastrians to
help generate further interest and investment in the county, towards a more prosperous and secure future for Lancashire.” Rachel McQueen, Chief Executive of Marketing Lancashire, added: “Lancashire is a proud and dynamic economic region at the heart of the North West, with significant strengths in aerospace, engineering, manufacturing and quality of life. These world-class assets are familiar to Lancastrians but we still have some way to go in terms of national and international recognition. “One of our biggest strengths, undeniably, is our people; renowned for their entrepreneurship, skill and creativity, good humour and hospitality. Our aim with the Lancashire ambassadors is to harness those powerful attributes, individual
experiences and influence to help celebrate and share our pride in this place. “Freddie is the first of our official Lancashire ambassadors and we’re genuinely thrilled to have him ‘batting’ for his county once again.” Andrew will support a small number of key events organised by Marketing Lancashire, that will showcase the county in the UK and overseas. The We Are Lancashire campaign launched in 2016, on behalf of the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP), created a Lancashire narrative that helped better define the county’s strengths, with the aim of uniting ambition towards economic growth and greater prosperity for Lancashire. Marketing Lancashire has already successfully showcased We Are Lancashire at MIPIM
UK, MIMPIM Cannes and The Paris Airshow and has a number of projects already in planning for the coming year. Leader of Lancashire County Council, County Councillor Geoff Driver CBE commented: “Freddie’s passion for his home city and county is immense, and he has arguably been acting as an ambassador for Lancashire for many years. I am delighted that he has agreed to work more closely with us and that we could make the introduction to Marketing Lancashire for him to become an official ambassador for Lancashire. I know he will be great in helping to raise the profile of our county even further.”

Lyndhurst Precision Engineering develops its wind turbine solutions
CHORLEY-based Lyndhurst Precision Engineering has increased production of its new wind turbine solutions, following increased industry demand and the collapse of a leading Canadian engineering firm. As a result, demand for their wind turbine services has increased dramatically, as the industry seeks high-quality and safe engineering solutions. The precision engineering specialists are increasing the design
and production of their bedplates, low speed shafts and braking systems, in response to the need for quick solutions to industry wide design issues, which have resulted in the failure of some of the over 900 wind turbines across the UK. A typical wind turbine costs in the region of £250,000 and can generate an income of £75,000 per annum, producing more than 6 million kWh of power in a year,
enough to supply 1,500 average UK households with electricity. Lyndhurst is also continuing its wind turbine reverse engineering efforts, with the next project being the re-examining of the current hub design and how it can be improved, ensuring better safety and longevity. Mark Marriner, Managing Director, Lyndhurst Precision Engineering, said: “Our increased focus on the redesign of essential
wind turbine parts, through reverse engineering, has led to us welcoming a new Design Engineer and Project Manager on board, with a view to bringing another two further skilled individuals to the team in the coming months. “The wind turbine market is proving a valuable opportunity for us, based on our established reengineering skills and established reputation for quality, cost effective solutions.”

Kirkham’s Salisbury’s Gas and Electrical supports British manufacturing with the only UK made washing machines SALISBURY’S Gas and Electrical in Kirkham has become one of the first retailers to stock the only washing machines to be made in the UK. North East based manufacturer Ebac has prioritised local independent retailers to spread the maximum economic benefit and to make sure the premium quality machines are accessible to everyone. Ebac has invested £7m in the development of its washing machines, and has built collaborations with leading appliance experts, with more than 120,000 man hours provided in research and development. This has resulted in a world-class product and a comprehensive understanding of washing machine technology and manufacture. The new models, which are the first new washing machines to be manufactured in Britain for more than 10 years, offer a revolutionary and environmentally caring hotfill option, as an alternative to traditional cold fill machines. This gives the benefit of shorter wash times and lower energy bills. Ebac is also offering up to 10 year parts warranties on selected washing machines. Ebac is aiming to sign up 400 retailers across Britain which all want to sell British goods. Last year the UK imported more than 30% of its goods from overseas compared to less than 22% in 1960’s. This equates to more
than £425 billion* being spent each year on goods made by overseas manufacturers, which are then imported into the UK and sold to UK shoppers. Almost all the money spent on imported products will end up going back overseas with only a very small amount remaining in the UK to help support our own economic growth and create UK jobs. However, all monies generated from buying 100% British products remains inside the UK providing an uplift to employment and to the British economy. John Elliott, Chairman of Ebac said: “We are delighted with the support we have received from Salisbury’s, and indeed all of our retail partners. There seems to be a real appetite for a washing machine which is made right here in the UK. “We should be prioritising buying British. If people vote with their wallets, they will help rebuild our own manufacturing industries along with an expanding potential for export. We all want to support a growing economy capable of providing quality jobs for ourselves and our children, all it takes is for us to spend our money on British made goods wherever possible.” Salisbury’s owner, Will Salisbury, said: “There is certainly a demand for British made appliances and we are pleased to have partnered with Ebac and its latest venture to bring these British-made washing machines to our customers.”
Private Label Nutrition achieves important halal certification
BLACKPOOL-based Private Label Nutrition (PLN) has received the important halal certification for its bespoke supplements. The firm has been working in partnership with The Halal Trust to ensure its custom-built manufacturing facility meets halal standards. Whilst no meat is present on site, supplements manufactured at the company have been certified to ensure that materials used meet a number of strict standards, including quality control procedures, as well as ensuring materials are not genetically modified. The Halal Trust is a not-forprofit, halal certifier and consumer advocacy organisation, responsible for promoting the halal sector for the benefit of halal consumers and producers of halal products. Taking four months, the certification process began with an application from PLN to The Halal Trust, in order to work together to integrated the Halal Trust’s strict policies into their daily activities. Following a successful site visit from The Halal Trust, the firm’s products were analysed and accepted as halal
conforming. The halal market is currently valued at $500 billion globally. The demand for halal products and services continues unabated and represents commercial opportunities for businesses to diversify and thrive in the modern world. Shoeeb Riaz, Operations Director for The Halal Trust, said: “The team at Private Label Nutrition has worked closely with us to understand and help promote the benefits of halal for all consumers.” Richard Richmond, Director, Private Label Nutrition added: “We made the decision to become halal certified as a result of the growing domestic and international market for supplements conforming to the diet. The growth in the halal market represents significant opportunities for businesses to diversify and secure future growth “Shoeeb and The Halal Trust have helped us understand the importance of halal and we are proud that the certification body has approved our processes and recognised the quality of our supplements.”

Cyber security – ignore it at your peril A LANCASHIRE technology expert has warned businesses that there is ‘no hiding place’ from the increasing threat of cyber attack. Matthew Metcalfe, managing director at Burnleybased Holker IT, issued the stark warning at a special seminar held in Manchester and organised in conjunction with NatWest bank. Dozens of NatWest business and personal customers heard that a staggering 90% of UK companies have been victims of cyber crime in the past year, many of them more than once! Mr Metcalfe, whose firm is a cyber security specialist, explained the dangers involved when firms fail to pay due attention to system security. “Cyber attacks are happening right here, right now and cyber criminals are becoming more
and more sophisticated,” he said. “Anyone who feels it won’t happen to them is living outside reality. Protection that may have been good enough a year or so ago is no longer sufficient. It is imperative, therefore, that businesses fully understand the size and scale of the threat and take the necessary action.” Kim Ogle, premier banking manager at NatWest, said: “We strive to keep our customers, business and personal, fully aware of the perils posed by hackers and to guide them on how best to protect their networks, data, systems and staff. Cyber security is clearly of great importance and the presentation from Holker IT was very well received. It was enlightening to hear an expert take on what is the biggest threat to business these days.”

B&FC students champion project to improve safety in Blackpool BLACKPOOL and The Fylde College (B&FC) students are spearheading a project to help people stay safe on a night out in the resort. The Ask for Angela campaign has seen positive results around the world and B&FC public services student David Shackleton gave a presentation to licensees at a recent Pubwatch meeting, who agreed to roll out the initiative in their venues. The simple code-word campaign encourages people who are feeling vulnerable, particularly in dating situations, to discreetly seek help by going to the bar to ‘Ask for Angela’, a phrase aimed at alerting bar staff they may need assistance.
Hayley Child, creator of Ask for Angela, said: “Ask for Angela was created to protect individuals from potentially dangerous situations especially when using the night time economy. The use of a code word alerts the bar staff to the situation and allows the vulnerable person to be taken to safety. The scheme has been successfully used worldwide and I am pleased to see that Blackpool is now implementing the scheme to protect members of the public.” Sue Crosbie, Employability Team Manager at B&FC, added: “We heard about the success of the Ask for Angela campaign in other parts of the country and spoke to some students
about whether they felt it would work in Blackpool. “Blackpool is famous for its fantastic night-time economy with a large number of high quality restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs. It is fantastic licensees have agreed to get involved. “We regularly raise these kinds of issues in our weekly progress meetings and students from our public services programme felt this would be a good project for them to take forward.” B&FC students worked closely with Blackpool Council’s public protection team to take the idea forward to the Pubwatch group. The initiative has already been

embraced by the national Pubwatch organisation. Cllr Gillian Campbell, Blackpool Council Deputy Leader and Chair of BSafe, said: “We know that the majority of people that use online dating services and go on dates are honest and genuine, however, some people can pose as someone else and do have ulterior motives. “It is hoped that this initiative will provide people with an increased feeling of confidence, in knowing that if they do not feel comfortable or have received unwelcome advances on their date, they can approach a member of staff, ask if ‘Angela’ is in and get home safely.”

Experts in property and facilities management Atlas is seeking to recruit an Electrician and Mechanical Engineering apprentice through their new programme. Phil Davies, Head of Estates for Atlas, commented: “Apprenticeships are a key driver to bridging the skills gap here in the North West. We have no doubt that this new partnership with Blackpool and the Fylde College will help us attract stronger candidates to our programme. “Being able to recruit skilled trades people locally has been challenging, by providing our own apprenticeships, we can invest in the local workforce for the future. Our apprenticeship programme is a great opportunity for those wishing to pursue a career in the facilities management industry. We will provide
essential on the job training and work experience with an acute healthcare setting”. The apprenticeships are open to all ages and will be delivered as part of a threeyear programme, with one day being spent a Blackpool and the Fylde College’s Bispham campus. Claire Jameson, Director of Business Development at B&FC for Business, the commercial arm of Blackpool and The Fylde College, said: “We are delighted to be working with Atlas to offer high quality apprenticeships which will lead to rewarding and sustainable careers. “At B&FC for Business, we strongly believe that apprenticeships can offer the best of both worlds for employers and the candidate”.
LANCASTER University has launched a partnership with the Environmental Industries Commission to support innovation and grow business which reduces carbon emissions and delivers clean growth. The partnership will support businesses which are working on ideas, developments and innovations which could cut energy use and waste. The recent IPCC special report on global warming of 1.5O C highlights the urgent need to develop new technologies and approaches that will allow us to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees. But the global move to cleaner economic growth, through low carbon technologies and the more efficient use of resources, is also one of the greatest industrial opportunities of our time. As well as being central to the IPCC report, this is also at the heart of both the UK Clean Growth Strategy, and the Industrial Strategy. The Lancaster University-based Centre for Global Eco innovation and the Environmental Industries Commission are launching a partnership to maximise these opportunities for business. Dr Andy Pickard said Lancaster University had been working for many years to enable innovation which is better for both the environment and for the economy: “We have a strong track record of working with businesses on innovations from new energy technologies to improving food security. This could mean finding new ways of using existing resources more efficiently or reducing waste and carbon emissions. This partnership also enables us to
work closely with business to inform government policy. It will help develop new relationships with industry and commerce to address global challenges, ultimately benefiting both the environment and the economy. The two will have to go hand-in-hand is we are find ways to keep temperature increases below 1.5 degrees.” EIC Director Matthew Farrow, said: “The UK has some worldclass strengths in environmental technology and services and we need to build on these to deliver the clean growth and exports we all want to see post-Brexit. Innovation is central to doing this – how can we solve environmental challenges such as air pollution or plastic waste faster and more efficiently? To succeed we need business, policymakers and universities working together and by partnering with Lancaster University with its ecoinnovation strengths we believe we can help make this happen.” Claire Perry, Minister for Energy and Clean Growth, said: “The UK has led the world in cutting emissions whilst growing our economy, with clean growth driving incredible innovation and creating hundreds of thousands of high quality jobs. Ten years on from the Climate Change Act, the first ever Green GB week is a time to build on our successes and explain the huge opportunities for business and young people of a cleaner economy. I’m delighted to see how many more businesses and organisations such as Lancaster University are seizing this multi-billion pound opportunity to energize their communities to tackle the very serious threat of climate change.”

Simon’s seal of excellence at Pride in the Job Awards LANCASHIRE site manager, Simon Nix, from housebuilder Redrow has earned a coveted ‘Seal of Excellence’ stamp from the NHBC. The accolade from the National Housing Building Council brings more success for serial prize-winner Simon, who earlier this year won an NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Award for the third year in a row. It was no mean feat with more than 16,000 site managers competing for the awards and winners hand-picked for their excellent standards on site. The 51-year-old, from Leyland was then put
forward to compete for a Seal of Excellence prize in the NHBC’s North West category and, amongst well-respected competition and rigorous judging, has made it onto an exclusive list of regional constructors, and is one of only 130 Seal of Excellence winners nationwide. Simon, who was recognised for his work at The Hedgerows development in Clayton-leWoods, near Leyland, was keen to pay tribute to the team around him and backing of Redrow in helping him achieve his latest success. “I was honoured to win a Quality Award in NHBC’s Pride in the Job Awards earlier this
year, so to earn a Seal of Excellence is the icing on the cake really. “The recognition is a great source of pride and a reflection on both the amazing team I have working with me to deliver high quality homes and the support of Redrow in helping continually push those top standards.” Simon’s successful year has also included being named Construction Professional of the Year in the Residential Category at this year’s North West regional Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Awards.

Lancashire County Council’s communications service wins national award for adoption campaign LANCASHIRE County Council’s communications service has scooped Bronze in the Public Service Communications Excellence Awards 2018 for their ‘Thinking about Adoption?’ campaign. At the awards ceremony, held at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, the campaign won the prestigious accolade. The awards, which celebrate excellence in public service communications, are open to all public service communications professionals working in organisations including central and local government, health and emergency services. The ‘Thinking about Adoption?’ campaign is aimed at recruiting adoptive parents who are able to give a child a safe, permanent and loving family for life. Lancashire County Council is one of the first adoption services nationally to develop early permanence and concurrent planning for adoption, so that more young children can go to live with their permanent family more quickly.
Research to target potential adoptive parents and to target effective communication with solid evaluation have supported the campaign’s effectiveness. County Councillor Susie Charles, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Schools, said: “I’m well aware that our adoption service is good and that was also recognised earlier
this year by Ofsted. I’m delighted that our campaign to find adopters who can give permanent homes to children has been acknowledged by others on a national stage. “The adoption campaign has increased the number of enquiries and approvals on the previous year, which is great news for the children who need new permanent loving homes.”

Seven EVA winners from Lancashire SEVEN businesswomen have scooped top prizes at a highly prestigious awards ceremony. Wendy Jackson of Fylde Tuition Centre, Beverley Davis of The Ivory Dressing Room, Amanda Munden of Moo Stylist, Elizabeth Manford of The Wax House Candle Company, Jane Hugo of Streetlife, Rebecca Stott, of Temple Beauty Clinic and Amanda Stewart, of My Baby Scan are now the proud owners of a coveted 2018 Enterprise Vision Award (EVA). The seven winners fought off competition from successful entrepreneurs across the North West to scoop the Training and Coaching, Customer Services, Solo Business, Retail Industry, Outstanding Achievement, Beauty Industry and New Business categories respectively. Coral Horn, organiser of the awards and founder of networking group, Pink Link Ladies, said: “What a fitting end to another fantastic awards ceremony. “We were delighted to see the awards back in its rightful home of the Empress Ballroom! It is a truly, magical setting for what is probably the largest awards ceremony dedicated to female entrepreneurs outside London. The EVA’s are a spectacular event full of glamour and glitz. “Our eighth year was simply superb, we had thousands of entrants and I’d say that this year was perhaps the most fiercely contested yet.” This year, the EVA’s Charity of the Year was the Pankhurst Trust, a small charity in Manchester
which plays a huge role in history. This was the home of Emmeline Pankhurst and birthplace of the Suffragette Movement. This year commemorates the centenary anniversary of women winning the right to vote. Richard Lefton, from Lefton’s Group, who sponsored the Professional Services category, said: “It felt particularly fitting that we raise money for this charity; without these brave and determined women, the role of women in business may have been very different today.” The crowd raised £2,600 on the night for the Pankhurst Trust which will enable them to open more rooms to the public. The awards were founded in 2011. For the sixth year running NatWest has supported the EVAs as the headline sponsor. Heather Waters, Enterprise Manager at NatWest, added: “The EVAs is a truly fantastic event celebrating the business successes of females across the North West. Each year, the standard of entries improves and that only produces yet more tremendous winners. The awards highlight the dedication that each woman has for their business. Whether you were a finalist or a winner, all the businesswomen should be proud of their achievements.”

Totally Wicked celebrates its 10th anniversary in the vaping industry TOTALLY Wicked has just celebrated 10 years at the forefront of the vaping industry. The Blackburn based company took a trip down memory lane with the release of an internally produced documentary showcasing the growth of Totally Wicked since 2008. Managing Director, Fraser Cropper, said: “Our 10 years’ anniversary on 8 October 2018, marked the day we first opened our Totally Wicked website and sold our first branded e-cigarette and e-liquid. It was a true pioneering moment; with
the term vaping still at least 3 years away from making its appearance, e-cigarette manufacturers and retailers had a tremendously difficult task of creating awareness and trust in our products. Even in our earliest infancy, we were privileged to be able to rely on the support of some tremendously loyal customers, who understood first-hand the potential of vaping. “For any consumer product that has such a lifechanging potential as vaping, in the context of the disruptive force it has brought to the old tobacco monopoly, the success that has been seen
in the UK is not a fluke. I believe that good business, that places its customer responsibility at the centre of its philosophy, has been essential in building trust and credibility, not only in vaping as a product, but also the confidence that our industry is able and willing to shoulder its responsibilities. That said, it is irrelevant if there are no customers who are willing to be their own pioneers. Our 10-year anniversary is ultimately an applause to every vaper in the UK who has often had to show the informed and allow for the amazing potential of courage and character to vaping to take root in the UK.” stand apart from those less

This year saw the debut of ‘learning huddles’, where there was access to expert advice on key business topics such as cyber protections and social media marketing, as well as visiting a workplace well-being zone and networking drop-in area. Nichola Howard, of Launch Events North West, set up Blackpool Business Expo, which was held recently at The Village, after recognising a lack of free,
quality networking and advice for business owners like herself. She said: “It was fantastic to have the support of the town’s business community to host our largest expo yet, we can’t thank exhibitors and visitors enough for creating such a buzz at the event. “This year we wanted to try something different with our learning huddles to give visitors a chance to have an in-depth discussion about topics that matter most to businesses in 2018, and it worked really well. “It was great to see visitors walk away with not only new contacts, but new knowledge that can support them to grow their businesses. Can’t wait to be back next year to see how businesses have progressed and to reach even more new entrepreneurs.”

New family law firm launches in Southport A LOCAL solicitor from Aughton, near Ormskirk, has opened a new family law firm in Southport to offer city expertise to local couples and families. Spence Family Law, which is based on Anchor Street in Southport, has been established by Adele Spence, a family solicitor with over 18 years’ experience, who left her role at Peterson Solicitors in Southport to set up the new firm. Services provided by Spence Family Law include divorce and separation and related financial and property matters, issues relating to children arising from separation, prenuptial agreements and cohabitation disputes.
The focus of the firm will be on finding legal resolutions for couples in a robust but sympathetic and sensible way. Adele said: “With all cases, I want to enable people to move on with their lives and look after their families as quickly as possible. “Going through a divorce can be a hugely distressing time, especially when children are involved. Whilst we are sympathetic and strive for an amicable resolution, our priority is to get the right outcome for our clients and this is what drives us.” Adele is a member of Resolution, an organisation of 6,500 family lawyers who believe in a constructive, non-confrontational approach to
family law matters. She will be joined by another highly experienced family law solicitor, Laura Olson, who is also from Aughton, and support staff at the firm. Adele added: “The current system which requires one of the parties to apportion blame if they want to speed up the process is outdated and often fuels animosity and increased stress for all concerned. This can be particularly damaging where children are involved. “Quite often, a marriage can break down naturally and a system that makes it easy for those people to move forward without unnecessary acrimony and delay is a progressive step.”

Telecoms business dials up impressive growth
A BURNLEY-based telecoms firm is on course to triple its turnover after winning a major contract in the education sector, thanks to Boost’s Growth Support Programme. Ollycom’s £25,000 contract to provide a wireless solution for Sir John Thursby Community College in Burnley represents a major step in the firm’s growth story. Founder Oliver Flanagan had previously acquired specialist wireless company ObservIT and is now looking ahead to significant expansion. Former soldier Oliver trained in telecoms engineering and worked in the industry after leaving the army seven years ago. He launched Ollycom in 2016. The business designs, plans, installs and maintains telephone and data networks for businesses of all sizes, local government organisations and education institutions across the North West. Ollycom’s turnover last year was £50,000 with two staff and the firm is on target to hit £150,000 this financial year. It now employs five team members and plans to double, and possibly triple its headcount in the next few years. Oliver received valuable support through Boost Lancashire’s Business Growth Hub’s
Growth Support Programme which helps entrepreneurs develop business plans and grow their enterprises. Boost Lancashire Business Growth Hub is led by the Lancashire LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) and Lancashire County Council, and supported by funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The fully-funded programme, delivered by Winning Pitch and Enterprise4All, provides help to develop a personal action plan, Lean Launchpad sessions outlining key principles for developing a new business and one-to-one coaching support for business owners. Oliver believes the advice and support from Boost has been instrumental in his business success story. He said: “My business mentor Nick Roach, at Geminus Training, helps me work on the business. When things aren’t going according to plan and I’m getting stressed, Nick will play devil’s advocate and ask me what if I did it this way, or that way? He gives me things to think about, a bit like homework. He’s a critical friend, which is just what I need.” “Boost, Enterprise4All and Winning Pitch opened my eyes to things I had never even considered before. Dave Fishwick takes major step forward in opening authorised UK Bank LANCASHIRE businessman Dave Fishwick has taken a major step towards opening a bank by announcing a funding round of £2.5M on leading equity crowdfunding platform Seedrs. His Burnley Savings and Loans Limited company (“BSAL”), also known as “Bank on Dave”, is currently in the application process to become an authorised UK Bank. Dave said the business aims to provide affordable loans to hard-working individuals and reliable small and medium-sized business who do not always have access to mainstream finance. He said he wants to put the trust, ethics and best-practice back into banking, treating customers as individuals and valued clients, creating a bank that is community oriented and genuinely helps underserved businesses, individuals, families
and communities. Having already lent nearly £20 million to over 3,000 qualifying borrowers across the UK, BSAL is now seeking to grow its reach by becoming an authorised UK bank, which will be called “Bank of Dave”. To help achieve this, BSAL is launching an initial fundraising round on Seedrs to support the procurement of IT systems and building of the Bank’s infrastructure needed in preparation of it becoming an authorised bank. The bank is forecast to achieve an annual operating profit of £4.5 million before tax in Year 5 of the plan. As a man passionate about his hometown of Burnley, Dave wanted to set up his own business in Lancashire to help inject much-needed financial support into local community
and businesses, and to prove that financial service providers can be socially responsible. One of the driving aims of the Company is to lend responsibly, therefore providing the customer with an opportunity to obtain credit, which in turn will help them to improve their credit rating in the future. Burnley Savings and Loans Founder, Dave Fishwick, said: “The core vision for Bank of Dave is to create an ethical, successful and sustainable bank which is distinctive from established UK banks which we believe are falling short on supporting underserved individuals and small business. “We believe in the need for a fresh approach to Banking and to provide products and services that meet real customer needs.” We have had a brilliant few years acting as a savings and loans
provider, but the opportunity to become a fully authorised UK bank will expand our horizons even further, enabling us to help more people across the UK. “We are delighted to be launching our first ever funding round on Seedrs, giving our hundreds of thousands of amazing supporters a chance to share in a new UK-owned high street bank.” CEO Jim Bradley commented: "We continue to witness a real market demand for financial providers that offer essential banking services to customers that traditionally find it difficult or are unable to access affordable credit. "We are confident that once fully authorised that the Bank of Dave will be the bank that delivers this capability.”

West Lancashire company celebrates giant canine conveyor contract A WEST Lancashire conveyor solutions company has just completed its most unusual contract ever, helping to animate a nine-foot-high dog, the canine star of a giant puppet spectacular that attracted more than one million people onto the streets of Liverpool. Engineers from Burscough-based Cobalt Conveyors helped the dog Xolo to run along a city centre street as part of the finale of Liverpool’s Dream, a four-day extravaganza presented by French marionette street theatre company, Royal de Luxe. This was the third and final visit to Liverpool by the Nantes-based giants, and was designed to
mark the tenth anniversary of Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture year in 2008. This time round, Royal de Luxe Artistic Director, Jean Luc Courcoult presented an all-new show staged in Liverpool and Wirral featuring for the first time the adventures of a little boy giant as well as a number of favourites from previous visits like the ever-popular Xolo. Cobalt was asked to manufacture and supply a bespoke belt conveyor to enable the canine star to run along the Strand on the last day of the visit, when the giants bade a fond farewell to their many Merseyside friends for the final time.
Cobalt Managing Director, Simon Turner, commented: “Although we have been asked to supply conveyors for the TV and film industry on many previous occasions, this was certainly the most unusual, and exciting request we’ve ever handled. “We were delighted to work with Event Design and Royal de Luxe on the project, and to be part of this superb event. “It was a privilege to see how this talented company bring their massive puppets to life, and how they create personalities that have brought a huge amount of pleasure to hundreds of thousands of Merseysiders on three separate occasions.”
Local Backgammon Business sees sales boom A LOCAL business offering bespoke backgammon playing sets is celebrating after reaching its global sales target of 200 boards, picking up a shortlisting for a prestigious national design award and acquiring a legion of high profile fans in the process. Bone Club, founded by Lancashire designer and backgammon enthusiast, Guy Haslam, started out as a community for local backgammon players ten years ago. Guy, who studied furniture design and antique restoration, identified a gap in the market for a championship sized backgammon board that could enable players, new and old, to have the experience of championship play at an
affordable price. Utilising his sculpture and carpentry skills, he began designing and manufacturing the ‘ready to play’ collection of competition size backgammon boards, with the first hitting the market in 2016. Guy added this product range to his existing bespoke, handmade collection with private commissions offering boards made of leather, brass and oak. What started out as a passion project has soon become a viable business with over 200 boards sold worldwide and a forecast to sell a further 100 before the close of 2018. In September, the Bone Club backgammon board was shortlisted for a
prestigious UK Backgammon Federation award for ‘best design’. International news giant Bloomberg purchased six boards for its summer party, the Malaysian royal family have a bespoke Bone Club board and two-time backgammon world champion and professional player Bill Robertie is also a fan of the brand. More recently, worldrenowned drum and bass master, and MBE awarded DJ, Goldie joined the Bone Club fold. The international music legend, who is a huge fan of backgammon, has waxed lyrical about his love for his Bone Club board to his 90,000 Instagram followers, pitching himself against
Hollywood actor Jason Statham for a game. Speaking about the boom of Bone Club, founder Guy Haslam, commented: “I started out the Bone Club community as a way to
reconnect with family and friends after relocating to the Fylde coast from Manchester ten years ago and I never imagined it would take the path that it has today."

Creative company shows the art of business growth DIGITAL and creative company, Mosney Mill, is driving impressive month-on-month sales growth while building a strong brand and creating three jobs after taking part in Boost’s Business Growth Support programme. The South Ribble-based company has also recruited sales agents to build its trade business across the UK and Channel Islands, as well as reaching the finals of BIBA’s New Business of the year category. Mosney Mill founder and owner Emma Sutton is a qualified artist with many years’ experience in all aspects of the art and design industry. Her hand-illustrated fabrics, wallpapers, kitchenware, homeware and gifts are made entirely in the UK. Her business-enhancing relationship with Boost started when she attended the Lean
Launchpad series and worked with Enterprise4All to validate her business idea, carry out business planning, brainstorming and peer to peer learning. Emma then went on to have a business support review carried out by Boost and as a result she was offered a Growth Voucher to assist with the development of the Mosney Mill website, as well as enabling her to market her products to other businesses on a global level. The inspiration for Emma’s work comes from the animals and wildlife that live in the grounds of Mosney, Emma’s family home. It is located on the site of the former Mosney Printworks, where the first printing press capable of simultaneously printing up to six colours was invented in 1783. Emma commented: “The Boost programme has been
invaluable in helping me to improve my business. By attending the various Boost sessions, I have gained a much better understanding of commercial practice and

Celebrating ten years of Chinese culture in Lancashire THE University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is celebrating a decade of bringing Chinese language and culture to the county. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the UCLan Confucius Institute (CI), which was established by the University in 2008 to bring Chinese art, culture, music, language and traditions to the local community. Over the last decade, the UCLan CI has worked with
more than 70 schools and colleges to deliver around 150 China activity days. It has taught more than 800 hours of calligraphy and brush painting, 500 hours of Taichi and 550 hours of one-to-one Chinese language lessons. In addition, it has provided more than 350 scholarships to study in China and taught Chinese language to more than 1,200 students. The Director of the UCLan CI, Feixia Yu,
said: “We are very proud to have served the University, local schools and the wider community in Lancashire with a wide range of projects over the past decade. “We have organised large academic conferences on responses to climate change and the Maritime Silk Road initiative and organised sixth form study days on Chinese geography. We have fostered educational exchanges with an annual
head teachers’ visit to China and subsequent return visits by Chinese educators and pupils. The annual Chinese New Year performance, the lion dance and our activities at the Harris Museum are now regular fixtures in the multicultural calendar of Preston. We are also very pleased to be offering regular Taichi classes and other Chinese wellbeing workshops in many different venues in and around Preston.”
Nugent Santé joins Global Membership Programme NUGENT Santé has become a patron of the NW Lancashire Chamber of Commerce’s new Global Membership Programme. The programme is aimed at Chamber members and focuses on helping exporters grow their business internationally whether they are exporting for the first time or have been in the global arena for some time. The new programme will provide specialist documentation support, legal contract review services, market selection services and access to an advice hub to help
exporters tap into global opportunities. International Private Medical Insurance (IPMI) is a key health insurance product for Nugent Santé and the Global Membership Programme dovetails perfectly into this. Paul Nugent, Managing Director of Nugent Santé commented: “With UK exports continuing to expand, this will entail more and more employees travelling or living abroad. What employers don’t realise is that standard travel insurance doesn’t protect their employees
whilst they’re abroad in the same way that IPMI does. An IPMI policy ensures a company is fulfilling its duty of care to its staff and can often provide many additional benefits such as health screening and vaccinations as well as routine maternity cover. The laws can be very different in certain countries, especially in Asia and Middle East, and with more organisations looking at global markets with Britain’s exit from the European Union, this becomes even more critical.” Vera Grantham, Head
of International Trade and Documentation at North & Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce commented: “We are very excited to have Nugent Sante as patrons of our Global Membership Programme. They bring a different dimension to the services and advice we can offer. Exporters will have direct access to valuable advice and support from the expert team at Nugent Santé. This will give them added confidence to trade internationally, knowing they are protected.”

Businesswise Solutions raises £15K for hospice COLLEAGUES, friends, family and Elvis… demonstrated the true meaning of team work when they completed the gruelling Pendle Three Peaks Challenges and raised almost £15,000 for charity. Organised by Businesswise Solutions, a team of 29 walked the 27-mile route to raise funds for Pendleside Hospice. Together, they smashed the £10,000 fundraising target thanks to generous donations and the first £5,000 matched pound for pound by the company.
Starting at Barley Car Park, the team of ramblers walked the long stretch to Boulsworth, before arriving at a welcome pit stop manned by Businesswise director Peter Catlow and his wife Sue. Unique Campers had kindly donated a camper van for the day for Peter and Sue to serve sandwiches and goodies generously provided by Lomeshaye café Northern Relish. The group rambled towards Weets before picking up a few more supporters to join them on the final Pendle Hill leg. The walk was particularly poignant for Businesswise Solutions’ managing director Frazer
Durris, who lost his dad, Peter Macgregor, to cancer a year to the day of the walk. He said: “It really was a fantastic day from beginning to end; it was tough and we were all feeling the strain as we approached the final few miles, but everyone carried on with a smile on their faces. “So many families in the Pendle area receive support from Pendleside Hospice every year, so to be able to raise such a significant sum is incredible. “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone involved, from the internal events we held in the office, the planning, donating and volunteering to doing the walk itself; you know who you are.”
Petty fund raising efforts exceed expectations A RECENT Charity Ball held by Petty Estate Agents at the Fence Gate raised over £6,000 for Pendleside Hospice. The Ball was the culmination of Petty’s Corporate Challenge activities and also to celebrate their 90th year and the Hospices’ 30th. Simon Westwell, Lettings Director at Petty’s and one of the organisers of the Ball, said: “It seemed like too good an opportunity to miss with us both celebrating a significant milestone in the same year and we wanted to mark the occasion with a big party, which is what we did!” “We’ve been absolutely blown away by people’s generosity and have raised double what we expected. There were lots of local companies who attended and who donated very generous raffle and auction prizes and it’s because of great local companies like these
PROUD TO SUPPORT AND PROMOTE:
and our loyal customers that the Petty name is still around after 90 years. We’re extremely humbled and proud of that fact” Petty has held various events to mark their 90th anniversary and have tied the majority in with fund raising for the hospice. These include selling cakes at the Pendle Pub Walk, running the 10k and their Trig Point Challenge, donating £1 for every picture sent to their Facebook page at the trig point at the area’s most iconic landmark, Pendle Hill. The hospice costs almost £4 million each year to run, of which £3 million is raised locally through individual and organised fundraising initiatives. Helen McVey Chief Executive of Pendleside Hospice, said: “2018 is a very special year for us here at Pendleside Hospice as we celebrate 30 years since the
hospice was founded. “The hospice was built by the community for the community’ and without the support of our local community we wouldn’t be able to continue to deliver the care to the people who need our support.
“Support from the community and local businesses like Petty is vital in helping us keep the hospice going and allowing us to continue the important work the hospice does in helping people living with life-limiting illnesses.”

Annual golf day raises £11,000 for brain injury survivors A GOLF day organised by Fletchers Solicitors has raised an incredible £11,000 for Headway Preston and Chorley. The annual event, which was held at Hesketh Golf Club, was organised by the Manchester and Southport-based solicitors to raise money for the brain injury charity. More than 60 people from local and national businesses took part in the golf day to raise funds and awareness of Headway, which provides support for people who have suffered a head or brain injury. Money raised from the event will be used to fund the Headway
services and ensure that head injury sufferers continue to receive the necessary support needed after discharge from hospital. £500 was raised before the participants even teed off through closest to the pin and longest drive entries. The fundraising was boosted further when a skilful golfer scored a hole in one. Instead of buying the traditional round for everyone in the clubhouse, the golfer made a donation to Headway. Rob Fletcher, Chairman of Fletchers Solicitors, said: “We are so grateful to everyone who came along to the golf day and helped us raise such a fantastic
amount for Headway. It was a very enjoyable day and we are delighted that it raised £11,000 for such a deserving charity. “Headway is a charity that we are very proud to support because of the incredible work that they do for people with brain injuries. Thank you to Hesketh Golf Club for their hospitality and the fantastic links course.” Headway Preston and Chorley is a brain injury charity that provides a range of support to meet the needs of people with an acquired brain injury, their families and carers. BCA golf day success THE latest event in the Blackburn Cathedral fundraising appeal was a successful golf day at Pleasington Golf Club, when 18 teams participated and raised nearly £6,000 for the appeal. The Very Reverend Peter HowellJones, Dean of Blackburn Cathedral, said: “Our sincere thanks to the eighteen teams who took part in another enjoyable fundraising event. “The money raised will go towards the Appeal’s match funding of the anticipated £2million Heritage Lottery Fund award to the Cathedral. This will enable the redevelopment of the Crypt and Undercroft of the Cathedral as a centre for exhibitions and meetings, as well as improving displays and the preservation of the
Cathedral’s collection of archives and artifacts.” Commenting on the golf day, Richard France, Investment Director, Investec Wealth & Investment Limited, said: “At Investec, we are immensely proud of our commitment to charitable foundations, such as the Blackburn Cathedral appeal and we were delighted to be the organiser of this golf day.” Following its launch in October 2017, the Appeal has received significant support from local businesses, especially for the 100 Club , which aims to bring together 100 like-minded Leaders, from the world of business, entrepreneurship and philanthropy to support music, art, culture and heritage.
BNI makes wishes come true for charity A CHORLEY business group has made wishes come true for its member charity, the HoneyRose Foundation. BNI Endeavour is part of the world’s biggest referral organisation, Business Network International. HoneyRose Foundation provides the last wishes of terminally ill adults in the North West. The charity joined BNI Endeavour in order to engage with local businesses as part of its fundraising efforts. Ron Hutchinson, Fundraising Manager for HoneyRose Foundation, who is the charity’s representative in the group, said: “At a recent
Endeavour meeting, I mentioned in my 60 seconds that many terminal wishes are usually very humble, such as a last family holiday or a weekend where a proposal was made many years ago, and how difficult it was to get accommodation during August with everyone and their children on holiday. “So my ideal referral was any generous, compassionate person who could assist. Incredibly, after that meeting I was approached by members offering caravan motor homes, luxury lodges and cottages, even a one hour flight in a private plane across Lancashire. In the days following, all these potential wishes were confirmed.
“I was really touched by the efforts of the chapter members, but what was amazing from a BNI status is that nobody actually owned what was offered, they just used their contacts.” BNI Endeavour meets weekly at Shaw Hill Golf Club, Chorley. BNI in Lancashire offers a seat in each group to one charity and the members commit to raising at least £20,000 a year for it. Chapter President Martin Newton, said: “I couldn’t be more proud of our group in helping make these wishes come true. It just shows the real power of BNI is not just who is in the room but who those people know.”

Ghost Garden boosts visits to stately home AN East Lancashire stately home found itself making headlines across the world after a ‘ghost garden’ reappeared after more than 70 years. Gawthorpe Hall, known as the Downton of the North, was featured by news outlets from as far afield as Australia, America, Canada, Germany, Holland, Italy and Japan, as well as being extensively reported by the media in the UK, thanks to the reappearance of its lost garden. It sparked a huge influx of visitors keen to see the gardens at the Jacobean hall in Padiham, which were redesigned in the 1850s by Sir Charles Barry, who is famous for his work on the Houses of Parliament. The ‘ghost garden’ was created during the hot weather, as various types of soil dried at different rates. This caused the layout of the Italianate style south parterre garden at the front of Gawthorpe Hall to show through the current lawn, displaying the old garden layout.
Sir Charles redesigned the garden at the front and back of the hall. The garden at the back is smaller and still in place, but the front one became too onerous to maintain after the Second World War, and was removed in 1946. Gawthorpe Hall is run by Lancashire County Council’s museum service, on behalf of the National Trust. Rachel Pollitt, Gawthorpe Hall manager, said: “It was brilliant to see Gawthorpe Hall being featured on so many different TV channels, newspapers, radio stations and websites. “We had so many people coming along just to see the ghost garden while it lasted. It could be another 70 years before it is seen again, so people wanted to take the opportunity and have a great day out at the same time. “It was great as well that many local people didn’t know that the
garden had originally been there and a lot of them came to take a look as well." County Councillor Peter Buckley, cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: “Interest on social media from all over the world has been incredible. The ghost garden has also appeared on TV, and been featured in newspapers and magazines globally. “I’m delighted that that there was such keen interest in seeing something that we have never seen before, and that we would normally only be able to view by looking at the original Victorian plans kept at Lancashire Archives in Preston, or the photographs on show in the hall. “The garden is fading fast now, but I hope that people either go back to the hall, or visit it for the first time to see all the wonderful history that is on display there.”
National awards hat trick for CityBlock LANCASTER-based student accommodation provider, CityBlock, is celebrating after being shortlisted for three prominent awards at Property Week’s national Student Accommodation Awards 2018. CityBlock, which develops and manages purpose-built student accommodation across the UK, including sites in Lancaster, Reading and Durham, will now go headto-head with other leading industry heavyweights at a ceremony in London on 12 December 2018. The Property Week shortlists, for Operator of the Year, Developer of the Year and Private Halls of Residence of the Year categories – add to
the growing list of accolades earned by the company in recent years, which also include being named as Best Moving-In Experience 2017, becoming ANUK accredited across all sites, and securing an International Quality Award
2018. Trevor Bargh, CEO of CityBlock, commented: “CityBlock has had a phenomenal 12 months which saw us deliver two new developments in Lancaster and Reading, plus commence
construction on a further two sites in Lancaster. To support the company’s growth we have welcomed new team members and we’re continuing to work with universities in cities where we know well managed accommodation is in demand.
“What continues to set us apart is the continual focus on the post-construction operational management of each building; we make sure we deliver properties in which occupants will thrive, putting the wellbeing of students, and the staff who manage the buildings, to the forefront. This is part of the reason why we’ve been recognised in both the operator and developer categories. “Being shortlisted for three Property Week Student Accommodation awards is recognition for the transformational approach we take and we look forward to exemplifying this in our upcoming developments.”
