10 YOUR WEDDING DAY
Q&A IN LANCASHIRE
Danya and Glenn Lewis-Baron
How did you meet? Through a friend – it was a blind date in 2009. What was the proposal like? We lived in Australia at the time and we were traveling up the East coast. We stopped off at the Whitsunday islands. One night, we went for a walk along the beach and sat down on a bench looking out to the sea, he then got out a ring and proposed on 25th June 2011. What was the date of your wedding? 25th June 2016. Exactly five years later! Where did you get married? Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Club What was the format of your day? We got married at 2pm in the Kirkland suite, looking out onto the golf course, then sat down for the meal and speeches at 4pm. The 10
night guests started arriving at 7.30pm. We had the cake cutting, and the father daughter first dance at 9pm. Why did you choose this venue? It was the first venue we looked at and fell in love straight away. The staff were so friendly and the venue was amazing. Did you have a certain colour or theme at your wedding? We had a beach themed wedding, so the colour scheme was bright orange. Our wedding cake was a sandcastle design. Did you supply favours at your wedding? Yes, we supplied flip flop keyrings and palm tree bottle openers. Who did you select as your main wedding suppliers? I did some of the plans but for the flowers I used SJ Floral Designs in Longridge. The wedding venue also supplied everything from chair covers to centre pieces, the DJ. The photographer (Neil Ridley) was amazing and we couldn’t recommend him enough. Paul Sindells was our video man, he also was brilliant. Shelley Dunckley supplied our love sign and candles for the ceremony room. I got my
YOUR WEDDING DAY
dress from Susan Crag Bridal in Chorley and the men’s suits from Slaters in Preston. Who was your hardest supplier to find? Trying to find a videographer was the hardest part. Where did you find the best customer service and support? Everyone was amazing there wasn’t a best one. What was your favourite part of the day (his/her)? Her – The ceremony, walking down the aisle and seeing the reaction on his face and the vows. His – everything lol.
Did you visit any Wedding Fayres? We visited one at Garstang, where we got married, and one in Cheshire. If you could do it all again what would you do differently? We wouldn’t do anything differently, it was perfect. Final question: Any advice for future couples about to get married? Take time for each other on your wedding day, as it goes so fast and enjoy every minute. Having a photographer and videographer is a must, as they capture the best memories, that you will have forever.

Congratulations! You’re engaged!
edding plans have begun and the venue is booked. Now’s the time to start thinking about the smallest, but probably the most significant item of your day – the rings!
18
1. The early bird gets the ring of their dreams! The earlier you begin your search for your rings, the more time you have to research, try on, compare and re-visit, to find what you are looking for. Bespoke or specially shaped bands may take longer to produce, so starting your search six months to a year before the ceremony is recommended. 2. Set a budget Shop around to find the best prices but remember, the best price does not always mean best quality; do your research, compare rings to the others you try. Also remember that many jewellers offer different forms of payment schemes, where rings can be paid for over a period of time. 3. Make some choices before you start looking • What metal? The same as your engagement ring? Jewellers usually recommend this, as this ensures
a more even wear pattern over the rings’ lifetime. There are several different metals to choose from, the most popular being yellow gold, white gold, palladium and platinum. Other modern metals are available such as titanium and tungsten, but be aware that once made, these cannot all be re-sized. • Matching rings? If you did want to pair some aspect of your rings together, it could be something as simple as having them made in the same metal or maybe a personal engraving inside the rings. 4. Shaped wedding bands If you are struggling to find a straight band to sit perfectly against your engagement ring, it may be that a shaped band is for you. 5. A ring to suit your lifestyle Ideally your ring will be worn every day, so make sure you choose one that fits into your lifestyle. 6. Enjoy It This is one of the most exciting times of your life. Cherish every minute of it! Enjoy your rings and remember that if you look after them, they will last you a lifetime.

Leave it to the Professionals…
A
s tempting as it may seem to allow your best friend, grandma or mother to complete your wedding cake, we would advise against this.
Your wedding day is a time when you want to relax, be stress free and enjoy the run up to your very special day. In the wedding industry, we all work together, often on a daily basis. At Lisa Marie Cakes, we take as much stress off our wedding couples as we can. We liaise with the wedding venue directly, when arranging the delivery and set up of your wedding cake. Whether this is a church wedding or civil ceremony, times can differ. This is always done on the morning of your wedding day to ensure that the utmost care is taken and the cake is not left unattended at any stage. Also a lot of venues have wedding couples in daily, so it is extremely important that we focus directly on you. If a member of your bridal party was to set up your cake, 26
not only is it stressful for them on limited timing, but also the venue may not be ready until at least mid-morning. We finalise all elements a month prior to your wedding date, including the final design, ribbon swatches, flavour and fillings. There are no last minute rushes. We then take over all delivery aspects. The last thing you would want is somebody from the bridal party attempting to transport and assemble your wedding cake. A cake should never be sat on a person’s knee during travel, and tiering up a wedding cake is not for the faint hearted. We make things look easy but I can assure you, it’s not as easy as it looks! We have often come to the rescue of teary brides who have put their trust in a friend or cheap alternative, so please don’t let this be you. We would always advise each and everyone of our couples to stick with the wedding industry professionals, because sometimes, as great an idea may appear to be at the time, it could end in disaster.

How did you meet? I was a lifeguard at a local leisure centre and he used to come in all the time. Working there, people used to try and add me on Facebook when I didn’t actually know them. Kishan made the effort to get his close friend to message me, asking if it was ok to add me. And we went from there...

30
Where was the proposal? Kishan flew me on a surprise holiday to Venice, where he popped the question, along with a bottle of champagne he had hidden in his suitcase Date of Wedding: 28 August 2016
Who took control? My mum and me Where? Shaw Hill Golf and Country Club Format? Civil ceremony with close family and friends; Indian wedding with 250 guests, and a reception, with a different 250 attendees Why did you select the venue? There are a limited number of places who can cater for this amount of guests, also with an option for outside caterers and nice views etc. Shaw Hill was fab, but with only 32 rooms,

we couldn’t see everyone the next day. Our wedding was one of the first times that they had allowed outside caterers for an Indian wedding (Hindu)
Wedding Fayres? We went to various but they didn’t really cater for our needs - a Hindu Indian wedding
Favours? We had glass roses for people who weren’t religious; plus little statues of different Hindu gods and goddesses
Favourite part of your day? Reception! We were able to let our hair down and relax with friends and family
Suppliers: During the day: RK sweets. Night time: RK Sweets and King Karai.
Advice for a future couple? Enjoy each stage of planning and don’t stress too much about small details or what others will think, as they won’t notice. Also on the day, enjoy every moment, as the day goes by so fast
Best customer service received? Most definitely, Shaw Hill’s event coordinators, Oliver and Nina

Selecting the right flowers for the day
C
hoosing flowers for your big day can often be a challenging experience for some brides. You may know exactly what dress you will choose, the venue, the colour scheme, but the flowers are unchartered territory and may even be daunting. That’s why it’s important to choose an experienced wedding florist who can guide you through your floral dilemmas.
Your bouquet should enhance the beauty of your dress and complement your chosen venue and colour scheme. Vintage romance is back in vogue, and along with it, the big, blousy English blooms associated with bygone eras. Peonies, English garden roses and hydrangeas in pastel, blush and neutral palettes are simply tied as if you gathered them from the garden that morning. Bouquet stems can be adorned with sumptuous satin ribbon, organza, lace, hessian or twine and finished with 32
luxurious vintage brooches. • • • •
It’s important to consider: Size and Style of the Bridal Bouquet Favourite Flowers Seasonal availability Colours and Themes
When entering the church, the colours and scents of flowers can make a big statement, with large garlands of flowers at the entrance and large pedestal arrangements placed at the back and front of the church. Quaint china cups, saucers and jugs on tables, filled with gypsophila and tea roses evoke an afternoon tea ambience. Decorated jars filled with small flowers on wooden log slices make ideal, inexpensive table centres, especially for rustic themes in barns and marquees. Whatever your ideas and thoughts, your florist will work closely with you, offering their expert advice and assistance in choosing your flowers and working to a specific budget, to help those dreams become a reality. Florists just love playing a small but very important role on your special day.

Over A Century of Styles Weddings take an awful lot of planning - venues, catering, music, invites, decorations, outfits, the list goes on. However, we all know that one of the most important details in any wedding is the dress. Wedding dresses and the overall outfit have a lot of boxes to tick style, comfort, footwear, undergarments, accessories and like, with any trend, wedding dress styles always follow fashion trends. Both have changed significantly over the years, giving brides a wealth of style options to choose from. The key styles of a wedding dress from the start of the twentieth century were: 1900s After Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840, the dominance of ‘The White Wedding’ trend began. This continued into the 1900s, when white was still known to be worn by the more affluent, whereas poorer brides wore pale pink, azure, or mauve. Simple makeup was preferred, with pale skin and rosy cheeks. Dresses usually had intricate lace designs, with an arm sheaf bouquet. An S-shaped corset was very popular and was worn to draw in the stomach. 1920s The 1920s were known as the ‘Great Gatsby Era’. This decade saw a rise in daring wedding dresses. Dresses were shorter, with straight silhouettes and dropped waistlines. V-necklines were also extremely popular, along with long sleeves. The wedding dresses of the 20s were paired with ornate jewellery and accessories, flapper caps and embroidery. Floral bouquets were much larger than ever before, with ribbons trailing to the ground. Makeup stayed similar to the 1900s, however with added kohl eye makeup. The 1920s was an era for extravagance. 1940s World War 2, rationing and the shortage of materials, resulted in the Government leading a ‘Make Do and Mend’ campaign, which had a massive effect on wedding

attire. Brides started to get creative and often made their own dresses, using fabrics such as parachute silk, which wasn’t rationed, or wore second hand dresses, previously owned by others. The war also led to the rising popularity in male wedding rings, as these became a connection between the husband and wife, while he was off to war. Rationing during this decade also caused wedding makeup to be minimal. Soft curls were popular for hair and the more wealthy donned red lips and dark eyes, creating a look of elegance. 1960s The ‘Space Age Decade’ created a trend of floral and metallic details, with short veils and high necklines. Empire silhouettes were a popular style, with high waistlines. ‘Society’ weddings brought in the need and desire for tiaras. Makeup included heavy eye lines, two tone eye shadow, false eyelashes and frosted pink lips, creating a futuristic look. Weddings began to look towards the future during this era, highlighting the core reason for marriage in the first place. 1980s Carrying on from previous years, during the 1980s, wedding dresses and weddings themselves grew ever bigger and better. Princess Diana’s wedding to Prince Charles inspired brides to want to over exaggerate their outfits, replicating the Princess’s dress. Her silk dress, designed by fashion designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel, brought about large sleeves, huge skirts, trains and massive bouquets. Bold bright makeup and the first desire for tanned skin came about in this decade. Today An hourglass silhouette is very popular these days, with brides favouring a mermaid figure-hugging dress style. In 2011, another Royal wedding inspired brides accessories, when Kate Middleton married Prince William, wearing a long, lacy fingertip length veil over her eyes. As a result, these then became popular. Crystals and beading are also very popular intricate details to have on dresses. Nude, barely there, makeup and natural waves or classic up hair do’s are currently in fashion. Famous names such as Michelle Obama and designers like Pronovias and Marchesa Bridal have made asymmetric designs popular. 39

I’m late, I’m late for a very important date!
T
hese are words you hope you will never hear, since your wedding day has finally arrived and you are ready to embark on one of the most important journeys of your life. So it’s very important that you arrive not only in style but on time!
Wedding cars are usually booked six months in advance, with Saturdays and the summer months being the most popular time. Please bear in mind that Friday is now becoming a popular day to be married, with lots of venues offering a discount for a Friday wedding. When considering wedding cars, there are some things you should bear in mind. For example, will the bride’s dress fit into the chosen car? Does the colour and style of the car suit your theme? What is included in the core costs? 46
You should then think about the extra details you require. Do you want ribbons on the car to match your colour scheme? Do you require champagne after the ceremony (chilled of course?) Should the car take you and your new partner for a drive after the ceremony, perhaps stopping off at a photo location (might be best then to remind the photographer to follow you?) Does the driver need to wear a suit? Getting married is hopefully a once in a lifetime experience and your car plays an important part. From making sure you arrive in style, to enjoying your last journey as a single person, to starting a new journery in life. All these experiences provide lasting memories for you to share with your future generations. Enjoy the day, by travelling in style and stress free, since your driver will do everything to ensure you arrive on time!

Hayley & Adam’s big day Hayley Picton (28) Married Adam Thomas (29) on 23rd May 2016 at The Church of Holy Angels, situated in the grounds of the beautiful Hoar Cross Hall in Staffordshire, where they held their reception.
The Colour Scheme Hayley chose a soft pastel colour palette, with her Bridesmaids dressed in pastel pink and sage green. The Groomsmen wore grey tailored suits, brown shoes and blue spotted ties. It was pastel perfect. The Experience Throughout the day, details were kept light hearted and the couple’s fun personality shone through, with cute personalied cake toppers, a vintage caravan Photo booth and the seating plan was a suitcase filled with bedding plants!

Hayley’s Hints “Use suppliers that you feel comfortable with and trust. I used Pintrest to find new exciting ideas for my big day. Think outside the box to make it more memorable! Your guests will enjoy doing something different on your wedding day. Organise something to entertain them, while your having your photographs taken.”

After the church ceremony, guests walked in the beautiful gardens, where they were met by a stunning 1960s baby blue caravan, with traditional candy stall and canapes for the guests to enjoy. This was no ordinary caravan but actually the most amazing Caravan Photo booth. Guests gathered inside the caravan, where they posed in hiarious props and had their poleroid photos taken for the guestbook. The Caravan was hired from Something Blue Vintage Hire.
Money Saving Ideas To save money, the couple asked Hayley’s Aunty Tricia if she would make the wedding cake. “She did an amazing job and we topped it off with personalised bride and groom peg people, made by a friend. Everybody commented how great the cake looked.” Another idea is to ask friends and family to save glass jars and decorate them with lace, hessian and string. Use them as tealight holders on the tables and sit them on log slices for a rustic look.
Too many bridesmaids? If you have a lot of bridesmaids, why not dress them in different colours to add interest to your pictures or use the same colour in different dress styles.

A good Photographer is vital on your wedding day

“C
hoosing the right photographer for your special day is more important now than it was 10 years ago” observed Paul James Kelly. Paul is one of Preston’s most experienced photographers, having covered over 500 weddings since 1985. One of only a handful of photographers who has his own high street premises, since most photographers work from home.
There are many photographers out there at the moment and so many are inexperienced. Anyone can take a snap on an overcast day, but bring sunshine and rain into the mix and it starts to show. If you are considering a photographer, please consider these two questions. Firstly, do they have insurance? If not, walk away. Secondly, do they charge less than £500? If yes, think again. Insurance may not be at the top of your requirements for a photographer, but consider this: Apart from public liability cover, a serious photographer should also have an indemnity policy. If the worst was
to happen e.g. cameras malfunctioned and no images were recorded, this policy would pay for a total re-shoot, including venue, guests, the full monte, up to £50,000. It is unlikely to happen, but with some of these happy snappers only having one camera, then even more reason for you to be cautious! As a professional photographer, you are employed to manage the capturing of the visual aspects of the day. From bridal prep to first dance, people are expecting guidance from you to capture their story. But this does not always occur. I have talked to many venue managers and even wedding car drivers, who have had to instruct an amateur photographer on what to do, since they had not taken charge of the situation. Why do brides book a cheap photographer and are then disappointed with the pictures? Do they not realise that they are cheap for a reason. I am not saying book me, since there are a lot of quality, professional photographers out there, at varying prices that can get the job done for you. Just be careful who you choose. When your dream day is all over, how do you remember it? Your photos are key. Beware!
