ON THE MORNING OF AUGUST 28, 2013, I stood in the middle of the courtyard amidst students, parents, alumni, and friends of The San Francisco School to officially open our new Community Center. The morning could not have been more perfect on this opening day of the 2013-2014 school year—the sun was shining bright and the buzz among the crowd was electric. It was a surreal and spectacular moment because not only had our small but mighty school just built a $10 million building in the center of our campus, we did it ahead of schedule and under budget! This would not have been possible without the dedication of so many people across our community. At the same time the school opened our new building, the Board of Trustees was looking ahead and clarifying its next round of strategic initiatives. We have accomplished so much in recent years, and it is not time for us to sit and simply relish in our success. Instead, we need to remain forwardlooking and nimble as the opportunities and challenges facing our school (and private schools across our country) remain real.
With that in mind, in the spring of 2013, I partnered with the Board, administrative team and faculty to identify a new set of strategic priorities that will guide the school through 2016. The process of determining these initiatives began with a joint Board and Staff reflection on the 2007- 2012 Strategic Plan. It highlighted areas for continued attention and growth as well as new opportunities that had emerged. Prior to developing the new initiatives, the Board asked that all goals: •
Align with the mission and core values of the school
•
Focus on being student-centered
•
Support the financial sustainability of the school
I invite you to read on to learn more about our new Strategic Initiatives in this edition of the Gazette. Thanks to the dedication and generosity of so many, including those listed in this years annual report (pages 5 to 11) The San Francisco continued on page 3

SCHOOL ADOPTS NEW STRATEGIC INITIATIVES 2013 - 2016 The cyclical nature of the academic year lends itself well to establishing annual traditions and ceremonies. At The San Francisco School, we take a tremendous amount of pride in our long-established rituals. A critically important, but less known practice is our ongoing commitment to having a ‘living’ strategic plan. These multi-year roadmaps for the future have been a constant guide for more than 45 years. Our most recent plan, “A Broad and Adventurous Look at the Future 2007 - 2012” was incredibly successful. It brought us the Community Center, new teaching and learning spaces, deep academic and co-curricular growth across the grades and ensured that the school remained forward-looking as opportunities and challenges emerged. For our new plan, a working committee of board members, parents, faculty and staff identified the most critical areas for growth and designed initiatives that would drive the school forward in intentional, yet innovative ways. At the December 2013 Board Meeting the Trustees unanimously adopted four initiatives. In partnership with the Board of Trustees, our faculty and administration will further develop and monitor the plan.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT
School’s future is like our Community Center ribbon cutting—bright, energized and focused on the right thing—the education of our students. There is no height that our students
cannot reach. They are poised to lead the way, and our ongoing commitment and investment in the school will make this a reality for generations ahead.

MISSI O N S TAT E M E N T
The San Francisco School cultivates and celebrates the intellectual, imaginative and humanitarian promise of each student in a community that practices mutual respect, embraces diversity and inspires a passion for learning.
OVE R V I E W O F S C HO O L
Founded in 1966, The San Francisco School is a Pre-K through Eighth independent, coeducational day school. The school is an established, vibrant educational community with a multicultural enrollment of 270 students, an experienced and dedicated faculty, and supportive and involved parents. The preschool program centers on the ideas of Maria Montessori. The elementary and middle school program reflects the ideals of a progressive, student-centered approach. The school also includes an extended care program, parent education opportunities, and summer recreational activities. Suitably characterized by a parent as “an urban school with a village atmosphere,” the school embraces San Francisco’s ethnic, cultural, and economic diversity. Our progressive approach to education encourages children to develop self-reliance, solid academic skills, integrity, and a sense of social values. The school is respected for our strong academics, our vibrant community, our personal attention to students, and our dynamic arts program. Our students graduate academically prepared, inquisitive, compassionate, and eager for the challenges ahead.
