Ivette Joan Meléndez Vega’s confessed killer sentenced to 102 years in prison

Hermes Ávila Vázquez has been sentenced to 102 years in prison after pleading guilty to the femicide of Ivette Joan Meléndez Vega, a crime that shocked Puerto Rico earlier this year.

The sentence was announced on Monday by Justice Secretary Domingo Emanuelli Hernández, who emphasized the severity of the penalty as a reflection of the cruelty of the act and the criminal record of the convict.

“With this sentence, he will spend the last days of his life in the prison from which he should never have left,” the Justice chief said.

“Our condolences to the family of Ivette Joan, who today are completing a difficult and painful process,” Emanuelli Hernández added. “We hope that they now have the peace they need to face their grief.”

Jessika Correa González, who heads the Prosecutor’s Office, reaffirmed the office’s commitment to justice and the eradication of gender violence.

“Today, Hermes Ávila Vázquez pleaded guilty to the femicide of Ivette Meléndez Vega,” Correa González said. “He was sentenced to 102 years in prison, reiterating that the Prosecutor’s Office had compelling evidence to prevail in his case.”

Ávila Vázquez, who was convicted of murder in 2005, was released from prison under an early release program that allows inmates to leave jail if they suffer certain terminal conditions. However, after he was released, he killed Meléndez Vega in Manatí, according to his

own confession. Ávila Vázquez had been diagnosed as paraplegic even though, as it turned out, he could walk. Since then, the Corrections and Rehabilitation Department has been the target of criticism for allowing his release.

Killer of toddler in Aibonito sentenced to 50 years in prison

ovanie Aponte Ríos was sentenced on Monday to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder and sexual assault of his one-year-old stepdaughter, Kailanys Isabel Soto Roque, in Aibonito.

Judge Luis Barreto Altieri, of the Aibonito Court of First Instance, issued the sentence, noting that Aponte Ríos will not qualify to be evaluated by the Parole Board, which means that he will have to serve the entire sentence in prison.

Aponte Ríos, who admitted to having caused multiple traumas to the minor, was also found responsible for acts of sexual assault. The toddler was transported to the Mennonite Hospital of Aibonito, where she was declared dead.

Prosecutors Ernesto Quesada Ojeda, Nailymar Arroyo Colón and Ileana Santos Colom, from the Specialized

Unit for Domestic Violence, Sexual Crimes and Child Abuse, presented compelling evidence that led Aponte Ríos to accept his guilt through a pre-agreed plea.

“The now convicted man will have to serve the full sentence in prison,” Justice Secretary Domingo Emanuelli Hernández said in a written statement. “He will not be able to receive bonuses or be considered by the Parole Board. In this way, he will pay for the death of a defenseless baby; a crime that caused dismay on the island.”

District Attorney Ernesto Quesada Ojeda added: “Today we put an end to this repugnant and atrocious crime against a defenseless girl who was barely 13 months old.”

“The Department of Justice will always defend with great fervor the rights, well-being and life of all children in Puerto Rico,” he said.

The investigation was conducted by agents Gerardo Berríos and Glicelia Alicea of the Puerto Rico Police Bureau’s Criminal Investigation Corps.

Governor urges Orocovis mayor to comply with law before hiring own electricity brigades

With more than 51,000 electric power customers on the island still without service on Monday, Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia urged Orocovis Mayor Jesús “Gardy” Colón Berlingeri to comply with the law before the municipality intervenes in the repair of the electrical system, following the blackouts caused by the passage of Tropical Storm Ernesto last week.

During a press conference, Pierluisi emphasized the importance of following legal procedures to ensure safety.

“There is a law that establishes the requirements for municipalities to be able to intervene in the electrical system, so what happens here is that the law must be com-

plied with,” the governor said in response to questions from the press. “This is a society of law and order. There must be a signed contract between LUMA and the municipality and a notification.”

“We must all remember that the safety of the personnel working on the lines, as well as the people in general, comes before everything else,” Pierluisi added. “We cannot put the safety of our people at risk.”

Colón Berlingeri had described as a “hoax” and “an injustice” the statement by LUMA Energy, the private operator of the island’s electrical grid, that the municipality is not authorized to appoint private brigades to repair power lines. In statements to the newspaper Metro

Puerto Rico, Colón Berlingeri insisted that the municipality has complied with all legal requirements, including notifying LUMA and the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA). The mayor also pointed out that 61.25% of the population of Orocovis was still without electricity, mainly in the Saltos, Bauta Abajo and Botijas 1 neighborhoods.

The mayor said he will withdraw the brigades hired by the municipality “as long as they [LUMA] guarantee me that they will have brigades in our town and they will be serving our people in a responsible manner.”

Colón Berlingeri said communication with LUMA has been “ambiguous, light and with little substance,” despite the efforts of the municipality to coordinate the necessary repairs.

Cayey mayor: Not a LUMA brigade in sight on Monday morning

Cayey Mayor Rolando Ortiz Velázquez said Monday that he had not seen a single brigade from LUMA Energy, the island’s electric power transmission and distribution system operator, working in his municipality as of mid-morning, while on Sunday he only saw one.

“All they do is offer false reports of situations that they are not actually addressing,” the mayor said. “I have already asked the management of LUMA Energy on several occasions to tell me where the brigades are located, and to date they have not wanted to inform me.”

Ortiz Velázquez added that “first there was the excuse that a complaint had to be filed, and then that the name of the person filing the complaint had to be provided along with their personal phone number.”

“Now they are asking for photos and that new complaints

have to be filed,” he said. “This private corporation has been highly irresponsible with our people.”

Ortiz Velázquez said he was receptive to the demands of numerous community leaders from all sectors and conditions, who echo the call of citizens who are without service, to resort to the democratic mechanism of protests in the streets.

“We must recognize the patience that citizens who have been in the dark since shortly before the passage of the storm Ernesto have had,” said the former president of the Puerto Rico Mayors Association. “If they dealt with this crisis with the same efficiency with which they send invoices, LUMA Energy would have the respect of the people. But it does not have it.”

Last Friday, LUMA Energy President & CEO Juan Saca announced that the percentage of his customers with electric service was expected to increase from 82% to 87% that day, following the close passage of Tropical Storm Ernesto, noting that he expected to have the majority of subscribers resupplied with power by Sunday morning.

“Today in Cayey, our estimate is that 15 of the 22 neighborhoods in the city are in the dark,” Ortiz Velázquez said.

“There are areas where there is service, but there are several so-called ‘pockets’ of homes in the dark.”

Governor is considering disaster zone request

Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia said Monday he is evaluating the possibility of requesting a disaster zone declaration for the municipalities in Puerto Rico impacted by Tropical Storm Ernesto, depending on the damage reported and whether the threshold required by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is reached.

“Puerto Rico has already been granted an emergency declaration, and we have federal assistance available,

but we have not needed it so far,” Pierluisi said at a press conference. “However, mayors are raising their damage estimates. If we reach the threshold required by FEMA, I do not rule out requesting a disaster zone declaration for municipalities that have suffered significant damage.”

The governor noted that he has personally seen the damage in some municipalities, which includes damage to roads, homes and the electrical system.

“All this data must be compiled, and working with FEMA, if we reach the threshold, I would be requesting

the declaration of a major disaster area in the municipalities most impacted by the storm,” he said.

Pierluisi went on to say that the Emergency Fund has not been used so far. He said the Office of Management and Budget is in communication with the municipalities so that they can make their requests for fiscal support if they have incurred significant expenses.

“It is a matter of complying with the guidelines and requirements of the [Financial] Oversight [and Management] Board, because we have $1.3 billion in that fund available,” the governor said.

Governor calls start of school year a success

Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia described the start of classes in Puerto Rico’s public schools as “successful” during a visit to Rabanal Elementary School in Aibonito on Monday, where he was accompanied by Education Secretary Yanira Raíces Vega.

Although 18 schools were unable to operate due to a lack of water and others due to power problems, the governor expressed satisfaction with the progress he observed.

“I believe once again that this is a successful restart of school,” Pierluisi said at a press conference. “Now the important thing is that the semester continues without further pauses or distractions.”

The governor emphasized that 99% of teachers have been recruited, which he considered a significant achievement compared to previous years.

“The vast majority of teachers, that is, 99 percent, are recruited, something that was not seen in the past,” he said.

Pierluisi added that the necessary materials for the students have been provided and that school directors already have debit cards to purchase whatever they need. Regarding the physical

state of the schools, the governor noted that more than 90 percent are properly painted, while acknowledging that the sealing of roofs is behind schedule.

Regarding service interruptions, Pierluisi said 18 schools were unable to open due to a lack of water service, but he gave assurances that the problems would be resolved in the next few hours.

In addition, seven schools remain closed due to major reconstruction work.

“Today, 96% of the [school] population has their electricity and water service at this time,” the governor said, adding that he hopes all schools will be operating before Wednesday.

Raíces Vega noted that “50 or so schools” [...] “already have a reduced schedule and we have an action plan that was discussed yesterday.”

“I was in meetings with both regional directors and school directors where we put together an action plan, so saying that those 50 or so schools are not in [session] is not correct,” she said. “By the way, when I came here, those 50 or so already started to go down [in number] because they told me [that] the light came on, [and] we already have water service established, which is something dynamic. So I have a meeting today at noon.

I return again and monitor at night. I personally am monitoring, I am having conversations with both LUMA and PRASA [the island water authority], so [...] we hope that service can be fully restored this week, as such, but we have action plans.”

The governor added that “[s]ome people will want to criticize because that has always been the fashion here, criticism.”

“But the important thing is that we are doing the work and I congratulate the secretary of education, the director of this school, everyone, all the staff of the Department of Education because they gave their all and the results have been seen,” Pierluisi said.

UPR Río Piedras begins academic year with increased student enrollment

The University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus (UPRRP) began the 2024-2025 academic year with an increase in the number of enrolled students, reaching a total of 12,059. Of these, 9,336 will pursue undergraduate studies and 2,723 graduate studies, according to Chancellor Dr. Angélica Varela Llavona.

The increase represents growth compared to the previous academic year, which began with 11,651 students.

“To our students, both new and those returning, I want to express my most effusive welcome,” Varela Llavona said. “You are the heart of our institution, and it is our commitment to provide you with an enriching academic environment, where you can develop your full potential.”

Transit Authority: Beware of fraudulent Urban Train offers

Integrated Transit Authority (ATI) Executive Director Josué Menéndez Agosto warned Urban Train riders on Monday about a Facebook page that offers to sell a train fare card for $2, pointing that no such purchase is currently necessary since the service is free as part of the transformation of the access and payment systems.

“ATI is not soliciting money for the purchase of cards at this time,” Menéndez Agosto said in a written statement. “This Facebook page is highly suspicious and appears to be a scam aimed at fraudulently obtaining personal information and money.”

The director urged users to stay tuned only to posts on ATI’s official accounts in order to receive reliable information on the progress of the transformation work and any changes

The chancellor also highlighted the dedication of the teaching and non-teaching staff, recognizing their fundamental role in the functioning of the university and in the training of students.

“To our esteemed teaching staff, I deeply thank you for your dedication and passion for teaching and research,” she said. “You are the ones who guide our students in their training, fostering critical thinking and knowledge that are essential to face the challenges of the future.”

In her message, Varela Llavona highlighted the academic offering at UPRRP, which includes cutting-edge programs such as the master’s degree in project management in distance learning mode, the post-baccalaureate academic certificate in disaster planning, and several doctorates in specialized areas such as computer science and rehabilitation counseling.

to the transit system.

The official added that new details about the access and payment system will be announced once the technical tests are completed. He also called on passengers who still have cards with funds remaining to save them, since a process for transferring money to the new card will begin in the coming weeks.

The ATI chief extended a special invitation to the student community to take advantage of the free service currently offered. “The Urban Train is an excellent transportation option for our students,” Menéndez Agosto said. “We want them to know that the service is completely free, so we invite them to use it and benefit from this measure.”

Gov. Pedro Pierluisi, with Education Secretary Yanira Raíces Vega to his right, rings in the new school year in Aibonito on Monday morning.
The University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus increased its enrollment by 408 students compared to the previous academic year.

House GOP makes impeachment case against Biden without proof of crime

House Republicans on Monday formally made the case for impeaching President Joe Biden, releasing a lengthy report accusing him of corruption and seeking to allow his family to profit off his office in connection with foreign business deals made by his son Hunter, who has been charged with felony tax crimes.

In the 291-page document, released on the day that Democrats gather in Chicago to begin their party convention, Republicans call Biden’s conduct “egregious” and say he should be impeached for abuse of power and obstruction. But the report contains no proof that Biden, when he was vice president, engaged in any corrupt quid pro quo to benefit his son’s business partners, and Republicans admit they have no direct evidence that he ordered any interference into a Justice Department investigation into Hunter Biden.

“An abuse of power may also be present even if, as some claim, the Biden family was only selling the ‘illusion’ of influence and access,” the report says, adding: “It is not necessary for the House of Representatives to show that the dealings involved a quid pro quo to rise to the level of an impeachable offense.”

The Bidens and several of their business associates have repeatedly denied that Biden was involved in his son’s businesses, despite the efforts of some business partners to cut him into deals after he left the vice presidency.

“I did not involve my father in my business, not while I was a practicing lawyer, not in my investments or transactions, domestic or international, not as a board member and not as an artist, never,” Hunter Biden said in the opening statement of his deposition to the committees in February.

Still, Republicans assert that they do not need to prove that Biden personally profited from his son’s business deals, accepted a bribe or otherwise committed a crime because, they argue in part, Democrats lowered the threshold for impeachment with their pursuit of President Donald Trump in 2019.

“In 2019, House Democrats asserted that impeachable offenses need not rise to the level of criminal conduct,” the report states, adding: “The House may therefore impeach President Biden for noncriminal

conduct that significantly impairs the political system or betrays the public trust.”

Like the impeachment investigation itself, the report — prepared by the Oversight, Judiciary and Ways and Means committees after a monthslong investigation — appears to be orchestrated for maximum political impact. It comes days before Democrats are set to formally nominate Kamala Harris, the vice president, as their presidential nominee, and seeks to tie her to what it presents as Biden’s misdeeds, using the phrase “the Biden-Harris administration” 21 times.

The document is the product of more than 30 interviews — including with Hunter Biden and the president’s brother James — more than 30 subpoenas and millions of pages of documents reviewed by the committees.

But the country’s political circumstances have changed greatly since they undertook the inquiry. For one thing, Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., the former speaker who ordered the opening of the investigation last year, is no longer in Congress, having been ousted by his own party and replaced with Speaker Mike Johnson, who also backs the investigation.

For another, Biden is now a lame-duck president, having ended his reelection bid last month after a poor debate perfor-

mance that prompted Democrats to lose confidence in his ability to defeat Trump.

For months, House Republicans have lacked the votes to impeach Biden, given a reluctance among some in the party to impeach a president on what they see as thin evidence, and Biden’s sudden withdrawal from the race further weakened the sense of urgency to do so. But some right-wing members of Congress are agitating for a snap impeachment, a move some in the party worry could force Republicans who hail from swing districts into politically tricky votes while the GOP is trying to cling to its House majority.

The report cites a litany of accusations against Biden, ranging from the overseas business interests of Hunter and James Biden; his handling of classified documents; Hunter Biden’s sale of artwork; and the slow-walking of a Justice Department investigation into Hunter Biden.

But it relies entirely on circumstantial evidence and inference to make a case against the president.

“President Joe Biden conspired to commit influence peddling and grift,” Republicans assert. “In doing so, he abused his office and, by repeatedly lying about his abuse of office, has defrauded the United States to enrich his family.”

The account does include a detailed

and wholly unflattering portrait of the business practices of Hunter and James Biden, accusing them, in essence, of forming partnerships with questionable overseas business interests, implying they could influence decisions in the United States or deliver big paydays but then repeatedly failing to deliver on those promises.

“Indeed, in many ways, the entire business of Hunter Biden and James Biden centered around hinting at, alluding to or outright promising what Joe Biden’s power could do for certain foreign interests,” the report says.

It says the men’s business practices allowed them to rake in millions of dollars and lavish gifts. Hunter Biden received two diamonds from Chinese businesses and a $142,000 sports car from a Kazakh businessperson. A Chinese company gave James Biden’s wife a credit card to use for personal expenses, despite her having no role in their business deal, the report says. No law enforcement entity has accused the Bidens of illegal business dealings. And it is neither against the law nor uncommon for the families of powerful people to profit from their proximity to power.

One key witness repeatedly cited in the report — 165 times — is Hunter Biden’s former business partner Devon Archer, who was convicted of defrauding a Native American tribe.

Archer told lawmakers during his interview that Hunter Biden put his father on speakerphone to talk to his business partners about 20 times over a decade. Archer said that the conversations were never about business, but that they sent a signal to those who heard them that Hunter Biden had access to his father. He has described the interactions as “an abuse of soft power.”

But the impeachment report omits Archer’s testimony that he believed Biden had done nothing wrong.

“Are you aware of any wrongdoing by Vice President Biden?” he was asked.

“No, I’m not aware of any,” Archer replied in an exchange left unmentioned in the document.

The House does not return until September, when it is possible a Republican could force a vote on impeachment. Any impeachment effort, even if successful in the House, is sure to fall flat in the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats.

Democrats’ unity convention has one giant exception: The war in Gaza strip

Even as feel-good displays of joy and confidence are set to dominate the Democratic National Convention this week in Chicago, one painful issue is bitterly dividing the Democratic establishment from its left flank: the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.

The specter of convention-upending protests that hovered over a gathering hosted for President Joe Biden has receded somewhat with the rise of a new candidate in Kamala Harris, who is seen as more sympathetic to Palestinian rights activists. But tens of thousands of protesters are still expected to convene just outside the event’s security perimeter, and the potential for high-profile disruptions remains real.

Emphasizing the unity theme, convention planners have tried to mollify both Muslim and Jewish Americans.

Speaking slots have been allotted to the families of American hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. One of the most prominent Muslims in national politics, Keith Ellison, the progressive attorney general of Minnesota, will be given time onstage. Doug Emhoff, the husband of Harris, is expected to speak proudly of his Judaism. And the Democratic platform highlights America’s commitment to Israeli security.

At the same time, Harris’ campaign manager, Julie Chavez-Rodriguez, held a series of meetings last week to hear the concerns of Arab Americans and some delegates representing Democratic primary voters who cast “uncommitted” ballots in the Democratic primary to protest Biden’s Israel policy.

Despite such efforts, the convention will be shadowed by large protests against the Biden-Harris administration’s approach to a war that Gaza health authorities say has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians since the Hamas attack on Oct. 7 that left 1,200 people dead in Israel.

The key question for Democrats this week is whether the demonstrators represent a meaningful group of voters who could swing the election in November, or if they are outliers on the left who should be resisted in an appeal to the center. Either way, the subject of the war is bound to be a central issue throughout the convention, said Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey.

“It is a reality, and it cannot be ignored,” he said. “There’s too much tragedy, there’s too much loss of innocent life, and by the way, there’s still too much — at a very high level — of geopolitical risk, and that is not going away, unfortunately, anytime soon.”

Protests of the war, led by Arab Americans, Muslim Americans and young progressives, roiled campuses and cities across the country this spring and dogged campaign appearances by Biden. Demonstrators have also made their presence known, though at a smaller scale, at some of Harris’ appearances since she became the de facto nominee.

Jewish voters and some political moderates, for their part, have been asking for a stronger sign from Harris that she will stand by the U.S.-Israel alliance, and stare down the political left.

“There’s just something about Kamala Harris that just gives me serious anxiety,” said Ezra Katz, 76, a real estate developer and political independent in South Florida whose skeptical missives to an expansive email list reach thousands of American Jews. To Katz, Harris has tried to be all things to both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian divide.

“Sooner or later you’re going to have to take a position, and sooner or later you’re going to have to be sure of what you mean,” he said of Harris’ stance on Israel.

The political consequences of Harris’ efforts to assuage both constituencies are far less clear. Next to inflation, housing costs and abortion, the Israel-Hamas war is not as much of a driver for most Democratic voters, even young voters. New polling data to be released Monday by the University of Chicago and GenForward found mixed feelings from voters younger than 40: Thirty-six percent of them disapproved of military aid to Israel, while 33% approved and 29% had

no opinion.

More important, the poll showed that the Israel-Hamas war ranked near the bottom of young voters’ concerns, well below immigration, economic growth and income inequality. The Harris campaign, new as it is, has tried to find some semblance of unity among Democrats on the issue. On Thursday, ChavezRodriguez flew to Detroit to meet privately with Abbas Alawieh, a Michigan delegate to the convention representing “uncommitted” primary voters. She also met with Arab American and Jewish leaders.

Senior officials from the Democratic National Committee held meetings Thursday with other “uncommitted” delegates in Chicago, and are planning to hold daytime panel discussions during the convention with Palestinian Americans, including “uncommitted” delegates, and with Jewish Americans.

Nonetheless, there are signs of strife for the week ahead. Delegates to the convention representing “uncommitted” voters plan to hold news conferences each morning in the Fulton Market district, a short walk from the United Center, where prime-time convention speeches will be held. Inside the arena, these delegates plan to hold a vigil for those killed since Oct. 7, Israeli and Palestinian alike. Pins distributed to “uncommitted” delegates and some Harris supporters will identify “cease-fire delegates,” organizers of the uncommitted movement said.

Large-scale protests are planned at the Israeli consulate in downtown Chicago and in the streets and parks near the convention Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

In the meantime, pro-Israel groups like Democratic Majority for Israel, the Jewish Democratic Council of America and the liberal pro-Israel organization J Street will hold events to try to respond to their voters’ concerns.

Some Jewish Democrats say it is imperative for Harris and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, to show voters that they will not be cowed by their left flank, and that the U.S. commitment to Israel’s security is inviolable. Much has been made about a brief meeting on a photo line that Harris had with Alawieh and Layla Elabed, a Palestinian American in Michigan, who are both founders of a protest group, the Uncommitted National Movement.

When Elabed suggested that Harris was open to the group’s demand for an immediate arms embargo on Israel, the vice president’s national security adviser, Phil Gordon, rushed to say she was not.

Some Jewish Democrats say they need reassurance from the standard-bearer herself.

“With hostages still in captivity and Iran and Hezbollah threatening more war, the pro-Israel community needs some reassurance,” Mark Mellman, the president of Democratic Majority for Israel. “Vice President Harris has an exceptional record, but she doesn’t have the 50-year relationship with the community that President Biden has.”

New real estate rules sow confusion, at least in short term

An hour before the open house Saturday afternoon, a real estate agent paced across the dark bamboo floors, straightening the throw blanket, fluffing the pillows and lighting a scented candle.

The last-minute sprucing at the $1.2 million condo in Jersey City, New Jersey, was exactly what agents have done at open houses for decades before this weekend.

The difference now is the information they are required to disclose and where they can disclose it when it comes to real estate commissions — a charge that had hovered between 5% to 6% of the sales price, and until now was typically paid by the seller and split between the seller’s agent and the buyer’s agent.

The changes that went into effect this weekend decouple the two commissions: Sellers are no longer expected to pay buyers’ commissions, though they can still choose to do so, and the proposed commission split can no longer be advertised on the online database commonly used to sell homes, the MLS.

The new rules went into effect across the United States as part of a $418 million settlement agreement with the National Association of Realtors, a powerful real estate trade group that was successfully sued by a group of homeowners in Missouri who argued that the longtime practice requiring them to pay agents’ commissions led to inflated fees. Brokerages have spent months trying to educate agents and consumers on the looming changes.

But when they were implemented nationwide Saturday, buyers remained befuddled.

The first potential buyers through the door of the three-bedroom condo in Jersey City — a commuter suburb of Manhattan where three-bedrooms are hard to come by — were a couple in their 30s. They admired the floor-to-ceiling windows and asked about the building’s warranty, the common areas and the types of mortgage they should apply for.

But a new question the potential buyers brought with them was: Would they be on the hook to pay the sales commission?

“Definitely confused,” said Sarthak Jain, 33. “I’m trying to understand it better, but basically I am piecing together that this

will cost us more.”

In fact, nobody seems to know for sure who stands to win and who stands to lose under the new rules about how real estate commissions are paid.

“The challenge is that state by state, broker by broker, and agent by agent, interpretation is very different,” said Tristan Ahumada, a California-based broker and real estate influencer who runs a Facebook group for Realtors with over 165,000 members.

Buyers are now expected to sign an agreement with their agent before they come to a showing — the exception being open houses, where people can still walk in off the street.

Aditi Maheshwari, Jain’s wife, held a packet of papers — her unsigned buyer’s agreement.

“But I think we can still negotiate,” she said to her husband, questioning his assertion that the new changes would cause them to pay a higher price.

Jill Biggs, who leads the Jill Biggs Group, a Coldwell Banker team with over 60 agents, and is representing the seller of the Jersey City condo, has advised her agents to continue to offer compensation of 2.5% of the seller’s final sales price to the

buyer’s agent in order to get more foot traffic. The agent for the buyer’s side now needs to email or text her office to get the information; before, it would have been listed on the MLS.

In the condo’s kitchen, a new sign was prominently displayed: “Attention prospective buyers: Please read this sign carefully.” Below, it outlined some of the changes.

The signage is one of the many variations in how the rule change is playing out across the country: In New Jersey, a law that went into effect this month requires signs at open houses that make clear that the agent who is hosting the open house represents the seller of the home.

The New Jersey Realtors trade group also created a hotline in an effort to educate brokers.

“To be honest with you, many agents have not really paid attention, or are really not aware, so it’s kind of like ripping off the Band-Aid,” Biggs said.

At open houses elsewhere, agents and potential buyers struggled to make sense of the changes.

At a Tudor-inspired home in the Weequahic neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey, visitors walked through a stately, ornate wooden door and were guided to a piano in

the living room, where they were instructed to look over and sign the newly required buyer’s agreement.

The listing agent, Debra Marshall, with Keller Williams Elite Realtors, predicted that some buyers would have trouble paying a cost that was previously footed by the seller. But, she said, her recent clients who are sellers have opted to cover the buyer’s agent commission.

In the Washington, D.C., area, Joe Okon of Century 21 New Millennium has five active listings, and four have decided to offer to pay the commission on the buyer’s side. But one of the sellers decided not to pay the commission, so the agent for a potential buyer decided not to show the property, Okon said.

It’s an unintended side effect of the rule change that some experts have warned could especially harm first-time buyers.

“I am guessing that there is a large percentage of buyers who are oblivious to what’s going on,” Okon said at the open house he was hosting for a three-bedroom duplex that featured Carrara marble.

And a few miles away, in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, Errick Harrell, a Redfin agent, explained the new rules at an open house for a two-bedroom condo adorned with pop art.

Among the visitors to the open house were Angela and Mike Mucha, who said they had heard about the settlement but didn’t know too much about it.

The couple listened carefully before concluding: “I’d definitely have to learn more,” said Angela Mucha, 55.

Wall St ends higher, extending rally ahead of Jackson Hole

U.S. stocks closed firmer on Monday, building on their largest weekly percentage gain of the year as investors focused on the Democratic National Convention and the upcoming Jackson Hole Economic Symposium.

All three major U.S. stock indexes closed higher, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq extending their winning streak to eight consecutive sessions as equities continued to rebound from a steep sell-off two weeks ago driven by recession fears.

Recent data has shown consumer resiliency despite economic softening, boosting expectations that the Federal Reserve will start lowering interest rates at its September policy meeting by cutting the Fed funds target rate by 25 basis points.

“What’s behind (this rally) is the hope that the spigots will continue to be open with the Fed potentially cutting rates in September,” said Paul Nolte, senior wealth advisor & market strategist at Murphy & Sylvest in Elmhurst, Illinois.

“Money is looking for a place to go, and it’s going into the equity markets.”

A slim majority of economists polled by Reuters say the Fed will implement three 25-basis-point rate cuts by the end of the year, and the economy will probably be able to avoid recession as inflation abates.

Ukraine says its incursion will bring peace. Putin’s plans may differ.

In July, as he secretly readied an invasion of Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine sent a very different signal in public: He wanted talks to end the war.

Speaking to the BBC, Zelenskyy said he had a plan to end the “hot stage” of the war this year. He dispatched his foreign minister on a surprise trip to China, a mission to improve Ukraine’s relationship with Russia’s most important partner. And he pushed for a series of international meetings, including one planned for Qatar in August, in which he hoped to rally backing for Ukraine’s positions and pave the way for a broader settlement.

His summer overtures departed from the two years of Zelenskyy’s refusing to offer any hint of concessions in the face of a Russian invasion that many Ukrainians believe aims to wipe their country off the map. And they made it all the more stunning when on Aug. 6, Ukrainian forces rolled into Russia’s Kursk region, delivering one of the most embarrassing moments for Russian President Vladimir Putin in 30 months of war and confounding predictions that the two countries might be headed toward a cease-fire.

Ukraine is making a risky bet: that the incursion gives it new leverage for a favorable deal with Russia, even as its military remains on the defense across much of the front line in Ukraine. Russians who know Putin expect him to lash out in response, believing that his military has the upper hand in personnel and weaponry.

There are signs that cease-fire efforts have suffered a setback. A diplomat involved in the talks said Russian officials postponed a meeting planned to be held in Qatar this month to negotiate a deal in which both sides would stop attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure. The postponement was reported earlier by The Washington Post.

In comments reported Monday by Russian state media, Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said, “At the current stage, given this escapade, we are not going to talk.” The length of any pause in negotiations, Ushakov added, “depends on the situation, including on the battlefield.”

Officials in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, say the incursion into Kursk could help provide the leverage they need to achieve a deal on Ukraine’s terms. They say that only by making more Russians — and Putin himself — feel the pain of war can they force the Kremlin to back down.

“It’s very hard to imagine peace in our era unless Russia loses,” Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, a member of Ukraine’s parliament, said in an interview. “The only solution to anything with Russia is: Make them pay.”

Ukraine’s counterattack into Russia will hasten talks, he said, by raising the cost of war on Russia. Ukrainian officials insist that Zelenskyy’s public diplomatic outreach this summer, coupled with his secret planning for the Kursk offensive, were two prongs of the same strategy.

“They’ve thought through how military and diplomatic maneuvers could work together,” Evelyn Farkas, the director of the McCain Institute, said of Ukraine’s approach. “It’s not just smart in the context of setting them up for peace talks today, it’s putting pressure on Russia and reminding the Russians they don’t

control the narrative.”

It is far from clear that the combination of military and diplomatic pressure will work with Putin, who has so far faced down political and economic headwinds at home and shown he is willing to bear a heavy cost to defeat Ukraine.

Ukraine’s position has been shifting in recent months.

In June, Zelenskyy spearheaded a 92-country gathering in Switzerland meant to win global support for his vision of a “just and lasting peace.” The plan as outlined would eventually mean Ukrainian membership in NATO, a full Russian withdrawal and prosecutions of Russians for war crimes.

But China skipped the summit, and some of the leading non-Western countries in attendance, including India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, refused to sign on to the summit’s joint declaration. To those countries, a key problem was that Russia was not invited to the Swiss summit; any peace talks, they said, needed to involve both sides and a willingness to compromise.

In the ensuing weeks, Zelenskyy showed an increasing openness to negotiate with Russia directly. He said that Russia could be invited to a second “peace summit” this year, and that Ukraine could regain its territory through negotiations.

Outreach to neutral countries has continued. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi plans a visit to Ukraine, the Indian Foreign Ministry said Monday.

Ukraine has also sought to set up a series of interim meetings focusing on specific issues. The first such meeting was set to be held in Qatar this summer, Zelenskyy said in July, on energy security; further meetings would come, in Turkey and in Canada, on food security, prisoners of war and Ukrainian children who had been taken to Russia.

Even as Ukraine was signaling its readiness to talk, its military

was preparing for one of its most daring attacks since Putin’s invasion began in February 2022.

The flurry of Ukrainian talk about peace may have served in part as strategic deception, encouraging Russia’s leadership to see meekness and let down its guard.

Ukrainian officials have also insisted that diplomacy and taking the war onto Russian territory are not contradictory efforts. And Ukrainian analysts have pointed out that Ukrainian strikes on oil refineries that began last winter provided leverage to negotiate on Russian attacks on Ukraine’s electrical power plants, a military tactic that led to the planned talks in Qatar.

“To engage Russia in a fair negotiation process, the Russians need to face tactical defeats on the battlefield,” Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior presidential adviser, said in an interview Aug. 6, the day the Kursk incursion started. “As these defeats pile up, social unrest will start to stir within Russia.”

There are signs that Ukraine’s attack has unsettled many Russians. A Russian state-controlled pollster, FOM, published weekly survey results on Friday in which 45% of respondents said those around them were in an “anxious mood,” a 12-point jump from two weeks earlier. It was a spike in anxiety similar in magnitude to the one after the terrorist attack at a concert hall near Moscow in March.

But Russians who know Putin said they doubted that the Kursk incursion and any ensuing public unrest could force the Russian leader to change course. The fundamentals of the fighting, they noted, have remained unchanged, with Putin convinced that he has the resources to outlast Ukraine and the West. Russia continues to dominate along much of the front in Ukraine and to make gains in the east, closing in on the strategically important Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk.

Russia postponed its participation in the Qatar meeting on energy security after the Kursk incursion, the diplomat briefed on the matter said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. Russia did not pull out of the talks but said it needed more time, describing the incursion as an escalation, the diplomat said.

Last Tuesday — a week after the incursion began — Andriy Yermak, the head of Zelenskyy’s presidential office, said the meeting on energy security was still set to take place this month but in an online format. A spokesperson for Zelenskyy’s office declined to comment.

Since the Kursk incursion, Putin will now be looking for ways to increase the amount of pain he is inflicting on Ukraine, said Tatiana Stanovaya, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center. Rather than negotiate, Putin is convinced that Russia will eventually triumph, she said, and he is prepared to take on more risk and force Russians to carry a heavier cost.

“Putin is ready to pay an even higher price than this,” she said, referring to the consequences of the Kursk incursion. “For Putin, this is simply a question of the price of victory.”

A family flees and a mother mourns after Israeli settlers attack a Palestinian village

They came into the village just past sundown, dozens of Israeli settlers wearing masks, dressed in dark clothes and armed with rocks, Kalashnikovs and M16s, witnesses said.

A local resident, Muawiya al-Sidee, said his 13-year-old daughter was one of the first to spot them as she and her younger siblings were playing Thursday in their front garden in the village of Jit, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

“‘Baba, settlers are coming!’” the girl screamed.

Al-Sidee and his wife, who was breastfeeding their 2-year-old daughter at the time, piled their five children into their car and drove off just as the settlers reached their front door.

Seconds later, he said, the Israelis from the nearby Eli settlement smashed the windows of his family’s home and threw in three Molotov cocktails, burning rooms where, moments earlier, the family had gathered.

As the family fled, a call went out over mosque loudspeakers in the village of some 3,000 people, imploring young men to come out and defend against the rampaging settlers.

When al-Sidee returned hours later, after the settlers had withdrawn, he found the sofas in his house were charred husks and the overhead lamps had melted.

Elsewhere in the village, Rasheed al-Seda, 23, awoke when the call for defenders sounded from the mosques. He joined a group determined to defend the village, armed with nothing but stones.

It would cost him his life, his mother and the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.

The Israeli military confirmed the attack on the village.

“Dozens of Israeli civilians, some of them

masked, entered the town of Jit and set fire to vehicles and structures in the area, hurled rocks and Molotov cocktails,” a military statement said, adding that the military had opened an investigation and was looking into reports of a fatality.

More than 2.7 million Palestinians reside in ancestral cities, towns and farming villages in the West Bank, where, for generations, many have lived off the land. But that existence is increasingly under threat as more Israelis move to the territory — they now number nearly 500,000 — to live in settlements considered illegal under international law.

Since the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel and the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, attacks by Jewish settlers on Palestinians across the West Bank have become common.

There have been about 1,250 such attacks in this time, according to the United Nations — 25 in the past week alone.

More than 589 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or Jewish settlers in the West Bank since Oct. 7, according to Palestinian health officials. Eighteen Israelis have been killed in the territory in the same time period, according to the United Nations.

In total, four houses and six vehicles were burned, according to Yesh Din, an Israeli rights group.

The military said that its forces, along with Israel Border Police, had been dispatched to the site and dispersed the rampage by firing shots into the air and “removing the Israeli civilians from the town” within about 30 minutes from the time it began.

But rights groups and Palestinians have said in the past that the Israeli military often does nothing to stop such attacks. And Jit residents said that the military had not arrived at the scene until more than an hour after the settler rampage had begun.

The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, whose coalition government includes West Bank settlers in top positions, said the leader “takes seriously the riots that took place this evening in the village of Jit, which included injury to life and property by Israelis who entered the village.”

But far-right members of Netanyahu’s government, including Bezalel Smotrich, the finance minister, and Itamar Ben-Gvir, the minister of national security, have made inflammatory statements about Palestinians before and have advanced policies to expand Israel’s hold on the West Bank.

In October, Ben-Gvir, who oversees the police, promised to provide thousands of guns to Israelis, including to settlers. He posted photographs that showed him handing out assault rifles to civilians.

Jit residents said Netanyahu’s government bore some responsibility for the attack.

“Ben-Gvir gave them these weapons to attack us,” said Oomyma al-Sidee, a relative of Muawiya al-Sidee. She said she was holed up in her home with her six sons and other relatives as settlers tried to break through the metal front door.

“This is terrorism,” she said.

From the roof of their home, her sons threw rocks at the settlers, trying to push them away from the home and two vehicles parked out front. Some of the settlers smashed the vehicles’ windows and set them on fire with Molotov cocktails, she said.

Despite the danger, she said, her husband ran outside with a hose to try to put out the fire, worried that the vehicles would explode and ignite their home.

“We escaped death,” she said.

This was not the first time that the family had been targeted, she said. In October, Israelis from the same settlement kidnapped her husband for an hour, beat him with guns and threatened to shoot him.

Since then, al-Sidee said, she has kept their IDs, important documents and gold jewelry in a lunchbox that she carries with her every time she leaves her house.

On Thursday night, after the attack, she and her family slept at a relative’s house.

“Tonight, I don’t know where we will sleep. They might come back,” al-Sidee said Friday, expressing a widespread fear throughout the village.

She had just returned from the wake for al-Seda, who had been a student in an Arabic class she teaches.

Throughout the village, mourning posters had gone up for al-Seda. At his family’s home, a banner hung outside as villagers streamed in to attend the wake. Recitations from the Quran played in the background as women came in, offering their condolences and sipping bitter coffee.

In one corner, his mother, Iman al-Seda, sat reciting prayers and lamenting the loss of her son.

“My love, my life,” she said, weeping and wiping her bloodshot eyes with a crumpled tissue.

Rasheed al-Seda, who had worked in computers, was a sociable person who brought life to their home, his mother said. He would always kiss on her cheeks and hands, a common sign of respect for elders in Arab culture.

“What am I going to do?” she said. “I wish he hadn’t gone to help.”

Colleges can’t say they weren’t warned

“In the year 2024, in the United States of America, in the State of California, in the City of Los Angeles, Jewish students were excluded from portions of the UCLA campus because they refused to denounce their faith.” Those are the first words of an angry court opinion by Mark Scarsi, a U.S. District Court judge in California.

On Aug. 13, he issued an injunction that requires UCLA to keep its campus fully and equally open to Jewish students, including Jewish students who believe “they have a religious obligation to support the Jewish state of Israel.”

Scarsi’s decision (which UCLA is appealing) was one of three court opinions rendered in the past three weeks that collectively send a message to American universities: This year, there cannot be a repeat of the antisemitic harassment we saw on all too many college campuses over the last year. The cases are still in their early stages. Many facts are still contested, and we may face years of litigation before the cases are finally resolved, but the decisions so far teach an important lesson nonetheless.

In the aftermath of the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, a number of universities were taken by surprise by the sheer sustained disruption and by the antisemitic animosity on their campuses. They struggled to respond effectively. As the war continues — and as the conflict with Hezbollah escalates on Israel’s northern border — universities can no longer claim to be surprised.

They know what might happen this school year, and this knowledge has legal significance. If they fail to protect the free speech of students or to protect students from antisemitic or Islamophobic harassment, there will be consequences.

The case at UCLA includes claims by Jewish plaintiffs that they were discriminated against and blocked from gaining access to parts of campus because of their religious support for Israel, a viewpoint the First Amendment protects. The other two cases — one at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the other at Harvard — focused on claims of antisemitic harassment under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The Cambridge cases were decided by the same federal judge — Richard Stearns, from the District of Massachusetts — but they came out in very different ways. He dismissed the lawsuit against MIT, and he permitted the Title VI claims against Harvard to go forward. The reason for the distinction is simple. Though both campuses experienced a burst of antisemitic incidents, according to the evidence presented to the judge, MIT took concrete actions to prevent harassment on campus; Harvard, by contrast, “failed its Jewish students.”

(Again, it’s worth emphasizing that the case is in its early stages, and Harvard will have ample opportunity to contest the plaintiffs’ claims. The MIT plaintiffs will also have an opportunity to appeal the dismissal of their case, if they so choose.)

As the court writes in its Harvard opinion, MIT’s failure was “its failure to anticipate the bigoted behavior that some demonstrators — however sincere their disagreement with U.S. and Israeli policies — would exhibit as events unfolded.” But, the court writes, “despite MIT’s failure of clairvoyance, it did respond with a perhaps overly measured but nonetheless consistent sense of purpose in returning civil order and discourse to its campus.”

The available evidence suggests that Harvard’s response was quite different — “at best, indecisive, vacillating and at times internally contradictory,” Stearns writes. For example, he refers to an incident in which Harvard Law School’s dean of students, Stephen Ball, emailed students to tell them that the lounge in the Caspersen student center on campus was limited to “personal or small group study and conversation.”

According to the plaintiffs’ complaint, Ball sent that email after pro-Palestinian demonstrators had protested in the space for two weeks and Jewish students had requested access to hold their own demonstration. Instead of granting equivalent access, the university attempted to stop the protests entirely.

Yet the pro-Palestinian demonstrators defied that edict and hosted a “vigil for martyrs” in Caspersen lounge. Rather than enforce the rule, according to court documents, Ball attended the vigil. In another incident, Harvard police officers reportedly stood by as a Jewish student was charged and pushed.

In still another allegation of disparate treatment, the plaintiffs claim that “Harvard required Chabad, a campus Hasidic Jewish community center, to remove its Hanukkah menorah from campus each night to prevent it being vandalized” yet provided round-the-clock security to a proPalestinian “Wall of Resistance.”

As the court notes, Harvard’s leaders acknowledged the eruption of antisemitism on campus, and dismissing the complaint “would reward Harvard for virtuous public declarations that for the most part,” according to the plaintiffs’ allegations, “proved hollow when it came to taking disciplinary measures against offending students and faculty.”

The UCLA case was slightly different. It involved claims brought by Jewish students that they faced discrimination not simply because they were Jews but because their religious convictions required them to support the Jewish state of Israel. The court ruled that the First Amendment protects

pro-Palestinian encampment on the University of California, Los Angeles campus in the evening of Wednesday, May 1, 2024. (Philip Cheung/The New York Times)

their beliefs, and UCLA — as a public university — must protect the First Amendment, even when “third-party agitators” arrive on campus and try to block students from full access to its facilities.

Taken together, these cases reaffirm the principles I wrote about during the first wave of campus unrest. First, the right to speak on a public university campus includes the right to engage in offensive speech. The most extreme Zionist and the most extreme supporter of Palestinians have equal rights to speak, even when their words might offend. Celebrating Oct. 7, for example, and calling for the indiscriminate bombing of the Gaza Strip both glorify lawless violence, but it doesn’t matter: They are both protected by the Constitution.

All the ‘Alien’ movies, ranked

Just like the space creature it’s named after, the 45-yearold “Alien” franchise has proved hard to kill: Every time you think the series has been dealt a death blow by a disappointing installment, a new movie rolls around, rekindling fans’ hopes. Following that pattern, here comes “Alien: Romulus” in theaters, seven years after “Alien: Covenant.”

The series (all the older titles are streaming on Hulu) has endured for many reasons. Thematically, it has touched, often in a pioneering way, on many subjects we now confront daily: corporate malfeasance, science gone rogue, artificial intelligence, cloning and the very meaning of life. And it has done so by pitting regular working stiffs against the cryptic title life form, whose motivations boil down to reproducing their own kind, and exterminating everybody and everything else in a viciously gory manner.

Whether you are new to the “Alien”-verse, need a refresher or are looking for a spirited argument, here is a ranking of the seven core movies, on a scale of 1 alien (not too spooky) to 5 aliens (terrifying).

1979

‘Alien’ 5 aliens

Few films are so perfect that you can’t imagine changing anything; Ridley Scott’s brilliant second feature, written by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett, is one of them. Lured to an isolated moon by a mysterious signal, the crew members of the towing ship Nostromo run into a terrifying life form that decimates them one by one. In just under two hours, the grittily realistic yet eerily poetic “Alien” modernizes cinematic space creatures, reinvents bio-horror and anticipates the contemporary discourse about capitalist greed and artificial intelligence. It also introduces to the science fiction canon the xenomorph (the creature’s biomechanical-looking life stage, a biped with a double set of fangs) and an action heroine for the ages in Warrant Officer Ripley (Sigourney Weaver). Even the trailer was amazing. No notes.

1986

‘Aliens’ 2 aliens

Written and directed by James Cameron, the first sequel to “Alien” is widely held as either the best or the second best movie in the series. But have you watched it recently? Because “Aliens” has aged badly. After 57 years in hypersleep, Ripley grudgingly agrees to help wipe out a nest of beasties threatening a settlement. “Aliens” bears many of the badges of dishonor of formulaic 1980s action: cartoonishly aggro toughies, a little girl in peril (Carrie Henn), a company tool with an upturned collar (Paul Reiser), a bombastically martial score (by James Horner) and, worst of all, an avalanche of hackneyed would-be catchphrases. Best: the confrontation between the alien queen (a major addition to the canon) and Ripley. Worst: almost everything else.

1992

‘Alien 3’

4 aliens

For many fans, this is the “Alien” maudit: the second sequel to “Alien” was cursed by a chaotic production process, met with a divided reception and disowned by its rookie director, one David Fincher. But time has been generous to this installment, whose number may also refer to three times the bleakness and desperation. The film starts with Ripley crash-landing on a planet that’s been turned into an all-male prison, where many of the inmates have become apocalyptic fundamentalist Christians. A parasitic facehugger, which attaches itself to a host and deposits the embryo that will eventually burst out, quickly grows to full size and spreads havoc on the colony. Featuring Weaver’s best performance in the entire series, “Alien 3” has a haunting grandeur and a core melancholia that are subtly emphasized by Elliot Goldenthal’s imaginative score. This one easily bears repeat watching.

1997

‘Alien Resurrection’

4 aliens

Nobody was clamoring for another “Alien” movie after Fincher’s flop, but we got one anyway: this fascinating mishmash cooked up by screenwriter Joss Whedon and “City of Lost Children” director Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Like its immediate predecessor, the bonkers “Resurrection” was

deemed a failure at the time, but now rewards adventurous viewers. It kicks off 200 years after “Alien 3,” with a clone of Ripley waking up on a research ship. Scientific experiments getting out of control, corporate greed and the growth of AI (introducing an android created by androids) dominate the story, whose baroque atmosphere makes it the one “Alien” film that could be turned into an opera. The scene in which Ripley discovers a roomful of disfigured clones is horrifying on a primal level, and more intimately disturbing than the violence in any of the other films.

2012

‘Prometheus’ 2 aliens

Ridley Scott’s return to the “Alien” franchise was a big deal, especially since it would be with a prequel to his own masterpiece. “Prometheus” focuses on the mysterious Engineers race that since the first film has been closely associated with the monsters. As we follow a scientific expedition, the film quickly gets marooned in a kind of pseudo-mysticism that’s somehow pompous and silly at the same time. Still, Michael Fassbender’s suavely threatening performance as this installment’s android and a new gross-out vision of pregnancy — a franchise perennial — make “Prometheus” worth a look.

2017

‘Alien: Covenant’

2 aliens

If “Prometheus” was about searching for the origin of life, its sequel, also directed by Scott, was about finding the origin of death — for what are the implacable xenomorphs if not death incarnate? The problem is that giving death an origin story is pointless: It just is. The plot revolves around a colony vessel that picks up a strange signal and makes a detour to investigate. (What’s up with all those ships thinking they’re the AAA of space?) It’s hard not to get annoyed by characters who constantly make idiotic decisions, and taken together, the two prequels add so many new versions of the lethal creatures that the essence of the “Alien” franchise gets diluted. At least Fassbender is twice the menace playing two androids.

2024

‘Alien: Romulus’

3 aliens

Set after the first film and taking place largely on an abandoned spaceship, “Romulus” suffers from pedestrian acting and a surfeit of fan-service Easter eggs. But the director Fede Álvarez handles the action scenes well, and the elaborate visuals and gut-churning (pun definitely intended) body horror are often inspired — think Georgia O’Keeffe meets David Cronenberg. We’ll have to wait and see how “Romulus” ages, but for now it’s a solid addition to the franchise.

Is that dog actually a … human?

He sits forlornly on a floating staircase, his body slightly slumped and his limbs in his lap, gazing out floor-to-ceiling windows into the summer foliage beyond. He seems to be contemplating something — perhaps the meaning of life itself — as the camera shifts around to the front to reveal his true condition. He’s not a man; he’s a goldendoodle.

This video, taken by the dog’s owner, Lawrence Skutelsky, is captioned “Trying to find the zipper on my goldendoodle after this,” and it has been viewed on TikTok more than 87 million times. Posted on May 24, it joined a pantheon of similar videos from other goldendoodle owners documenting the humanlike behavior of their pets — and prompted a host of new additions to the genre.

Naturally, many viewers on TikTok are now joking that dogs — particularly goldendoodles, a designer breed that is a cross between a golden retriever and a poodle — may actually be people trapped in dog bodies.

“Does anybody else’s dog sit on them like a literal human child or is it just mine?” Chloe Covington asked in a video she posted last year with her goldendoodle, Gemma, sitting upright on her lap. Others have shared clips of goldendoodles sitting on the stairs like Skutelsky’s dog or standing like a person.

Back in 2020, a woman named Molly Dolan, who lives in Charleston, South Carolina, posted a video of her goldendoodle walking upright on two hind legs across the entire street — and it has been viewed about 6.5 million times to date.

It was the first time he’d ever seen Brady sit like that, he said in an interview, but it wasn’t the first time he’d noticed the dog acting like a human.

“I came home the other day from the office and he was, like, literally laying in my bed, under the covers,” Skutelsky said.

Corrine Gearhart, a 43-year-old professional dog trainer who specializes in doodle breeds, described goldendoodles as “uniquely sensitive.”

“They can read us so well and that, in part, comes from the poodle side, which is really sensitive and intelligent,” said Gearhart, whose business, the Doodle Pro, is based in Denver. The golden side is “just friendliness,” she added.

She said she thought these goldendoodle personality traits might make it easier for their owners to anthropomorphize (or attribute human traits to) them, even more so than owners of other breeds do. When we notice aspects of dogs that remind us of ourselves, she said, “I think that helps us have compassion for them.”

Many commenters on TikTok say it’s not just the doodles’ body language that reads as human; it’s their eyes. (Doodle eyes tend to look similar to ours, with large irises and expressive eyebrows.) “Does your dog have normal eyes or does your dog have strangely human eyes that make you think he’s trapped the soul of a human person inside of his body?” asked one TikTok user named Nolan in a sound that went viral. Upon seeing a compilation of doodles with abnormally expressive eyes, another commenter joked, “Yep ….I’m getting a cat.”

After training hundreds of goldendoodles, Gearhart said, she has found them to be very expressive with their faces. “I can’t tell you the scientific reasons, but I can tell you just anecdotally, they’re more prone to connected eye contact with us when communicating,” she said.

In 2019, scientists studied the eyebrow muscles and movements of dogs and compared them with those of wolves. They found that “domestication transformed the facial muscle anatomy of dogs specifically for facial communication with humans,” perhaps giving them a more recognizably “human” set of facial expressions.

TikTok users are a rapt audience for animals (and human babies) displaying the sentien-

ce of adult humans. In addition to the influx of goldendoodles acting like people, there was the “fully conscious” baby, a 1-year-old named Kate with an enthusiasm for the Four Seasons Orlando who many thought was far beyond her years.

“Everyone was saying, ‘Brady’s the Four Seasons Orlando Dog,’” Skutelsky said.

Though she acknowledged goldendoodles’ humanlike traits, Gearhart said owners and fans of the breed shouldn’t get carried away, as they might risk misinterpreting what their dogs are really trying to tell them. For example, she said, a dog may pull his lips back and show his teeth in what may look like a smile, but such behavior is more typically an expression of fear or aggression.

“It’s important for us to still understand dog body language and not completely apply our human behaviors and expectations to them,” she said.

As bird flu spreads, disease trackers set their sights on pets

Trupanion, a Seattle-based pet insurance company, is partnering with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to create a disease tracking system for pets, the company announced last week. The system will draw on insurance claims submitted to Trupanion in real time when sick dogs and cats visit the veterinarian.

“The concept is to proactively detect potential threats to pets and public health,” said Dr. Steve Weinrauch, the chief veterinary and product officer at Trupanion.

The effort, which also includes academic scientists and other companies in the pet industry, is still in its early stages. Initially, it will focus on bird flu, a virus that has been spreading through American dairy cows and spilling over into domestic cats.

“This is a really important publicprivate partnership that is going to help fill some important gaps,” said Dr. Casey Barton Behravesh, who directs the CDC’s One Health Office, which focuses on the connections between human, animal and environmental health.

It’s one of several ongoing efforts to address such gaps, which extend far beyond bird flu. Like most other countries, the United States has no comprehensive national system for tracking diseases in pets. While the CDC is charged with protecting human health and the Department of Agriculture focuses on farm animals, companion animals tend to fall through the cracks.

“This is a population that is a little bit lost in the shuffle,” said Dr. Jennifer Granick, a veterinary internist at the University of Minnesota, who is one of the founders of a separate effort to create a disease surveillance system for pets.

It’s a public health blind spot that leaves both animals and people at risk, experts said. Many infectious diseases — including bird flu, COVID-19 and mpox — are zoonotic, which means that they can spread from animals to humans and back again. And there are few animals that people have closer contact with than those that live in their homes.

Companion animals also serve as a bridge between the natural and the human world and can be sentinels for shared health risks.

“I think if you had to pick one group of animals to invest in and really get good

health tracking information on, it would be pets,” said Dr. Sarah Hamer, a veterinary epidemiologist at Texas A&M University.

Pet pathogens

Scientists have known for years that cats are susceptible to bird flu, which they can catch when preying on infected wild birds. But the dairy outbreak has created new risks; since late March, dozens of bird flu cases have been confirmed in American cats, some of which were infected after lapping up virus-laden milk. (Other cases have been more mysterious, including several recently reported infections in indoor cats with no known exposures to the virus.)

Bird flu infections in any mammals are cause for concern, giving the virus opportunities to evolve into a bigger threat to humans. “But I think it’s really important that we focus heavily on cats,” said Kristen Coleman, an infectious disease researcher at the University of Maryland.

Cats infected by wild birds could bring the virus home with them, passing it on to their owners, while those that prowl dairy farms could transport the virus off the premises, spreading it to animals in the wild. To date, however, cats have been a relative afterthought in bird flu surveillance.

“Most of the funding — government funding, anyway — is going toward surveillance in humans and dairy cattle,” said Cole-

man, who is working to establish a flu surveillance program at animal shelters. “And I see a gap there with companion animals.”

There have been many obstacles to creating surveillance systems for pets. Historically, many veterinarians worked in solo practices, keeping records in their own idiosyncratic ways. (Standardized diagnostic codes are not widely used in veterinary medicine.) And when it came to disease monitoring in animals, many nations, including the United States, prioritized farm animals.

“Governments just don’t put any money into companion animal surveillance,” said Dr. Scott Weese, an infectious diseases veterinarian at the University of Guelph in Ontario.

Real-time results

Advances in technology and changes to the veterinary industry, including the rise of large veterinary chains and the increasing use of pet insurance, have made it more feasible to collect large volumes of health data on pets.

Trupanion now insures more than 1 million pets, and more than 10,000 clinics across North America use the company’s software to submit insurance claims. A sudden spike in claims for coughing dogs in California or feverish cats in New York might be an early signal of a disease outbreak. In the long term, the company hopes to build

a system that can flag any such aberrations automatically, Weinrauch said. But it will start with more focused investigations, such as scouring the data for signs that bird flu might be spreading in cats.

At the University of Minnesota, Granick and her colleagues have been building the Companion Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network, or CAVSNET, which automatically collects electronic health records from veterinary practices nationwide. The system, which currently receives data monthly from about 1,400 clinics, is not yet equipped for real-time outbreak detection, Granick said.

But it was inspired by a similar system in Britain, the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network, or SAVSNET, which has provided proof of principle. Run by a small team at the University of Liverpool, the network receives veterinary records and lab results from across the country, often in nearly real time.

Once they’re up and running, these sorts of surveillance systems can provide a wide variety of insights. For example, Granick and her colleagues are already analyzing the CAVSNET records to learn more about antibiotic prescribing practices in veterinary medicine. As in human medicine and agriculture, the overuse of antibiotics in pets could drive the emergence of drugresistant superbugs.

In some cases, it might be easier to track public health risks in pets than it is in people. Lyme disease, a tick-borne illness that has been expanding its geographic range, affects both dogs and people. Dogs, however, are routinely tested for antibodies to the bacteria that cause Lyme, while people are not.

In the United States, the Companion Animal Parasite Council tracks the prevalence of Lyme disease in dogs using test results collected from major veterinary laboratories. Every month, the council publishes maps of the prevalence of Lyme, and other parasitic diseases, in every county.

“Our goal was to let people know what is in their backyard,” said Dr. Christopher Carpenter, a veterinarian and executive director of the council.

On a county level, the council’s calculations of Lyme disease rates in dogs are correlated with case numbers in people, scientists found. That suggests that even people without pets could use the maps to gauge their own, ever-evolving risk, Carpenter said.

Cats sit on steps at Grazing Plains Farm in Newton, Kan., on May 6, 2024. Like most countries, the U.S. has no comprehensive national system for monitoring disease in companion animals — which leaves pets and people at risk. (Arin Yoon/The New York Times)

Which NFL camp is toughest? Probably the Steelers’.

No air conditioning in the dorm rooms. Two practices per day, with pads, seven days a week, full of live hitting.

For former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Craig Wolfley, training camp at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania was a “totally different environment” when he suited up in the 1980s under Chuck Noll. Every day, twice a day, the Steelers practiced in pads — first with a morning session to work on the running game and later in the afternoon to focus on the passing game.

“They didn’t even dry off your pants and jerseys” between practices, Wolfley recalled.

Wolfley, 66, now a Steelers radio analyst, joked that he could have a degree from St. Vincent after all the grueling, six-week camps he attended as a player. But even he heard old-timers like Andy Russell talk about nine-week camps, which bruised their bodies and tested their will in the 1960s and 1970s.

“You came together as a team because it was blood, sweat and tears the whole training camp,” Wolfley said. “Chuck Noll training camp was never about making the team. It was about always surviving the moment.”

For generations of football players — from youth leagues to high school to college and into the pros — long, physical days full of hitting were the norm. The more you hit, the tougher you became. At least that was the thinking.

But times change, and so too have the ways teams prepare for the NFL season.

Because athletes are now working out year-round, there is less need to work them into shape in the preseason. At the same time, rules under the 2011 collective bargaining agreement eliminated two-a-day practices. The physicality has also been dialed back. Today, in many NFL training camps, if you see a ball carrier or a receiver tackled to the ground, it is usually an accident.

“I don’t know how many NFL teams are full-on tackling,” Steelers quarterback Justin Fields said. “It’s got to be under three, if they are.”

So how many teams do engage in live tackling during training camp? In an informal poll conducted by The Athletic, 24 of 32 beat writers (75% of the NFL) said the team they covered rarely or never tackled players to the ground. Four teams tackle in practice sometimes, but typically for short periods with second- or third-team players. Three teams tackle often, including Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs, Mike McDaniel’s Miami Dolphins and Dan Campbell’s Detroit Lions.

Coach Mike Tomlin’s Steelers are in many ways an outlier. When veteran linebacker Elandon Roberts arrived in Latrobe last season for a three-week destination camp, he was, like Fields, initially taken aback.

“I was kind of like, dang, we’re really tackling in camp,” said Roberts, who spent four years with the New England Patriots and three with the Dolphins before joining the Steelers. “I was cool with it, but I wasn’t expecting it.”

On a typical day in pads, it is common to see the Steelers engage in periods of full, live tackling. Each practice begins with a drill called Seven Shots — seven chances from the 2-yard line — in which it would not be uncommon for a starter like Najee Harris or a key rotation player like Jaylen Warren to be tackled to the ground.

In many other 11-on-11 settings, the Steelers still see the value in live tackling, including short-yardage and goal-line drills. Additionally, twice this training camp, the Steelers staged spirited backs on linebackers drills, where high-speed collisions simulate live pass protection situations.

As the Steelers packed up and moved out of their dorm rooms at St. Vincent last week, they completed what was probably the most physical training camp in the NFL.

“You can’t box without sparring,” Tomlin said. “We play an intense game, competitive game, and I’m not doing these guys justice if I don’t create an environment that is reflective of what’s waiting on us.”

In 2007, when Tomlin became the NFL’s youngest head coach at 34 years old, he inherited a veteran-laden team full of many players who hoisted the Lombardi Trophy alongside Bill Cowher in 2005.

During his first training camp in Latrobe, Tomlin set the tone, making a statement that there was a new sheriff in town. This was not Cowher’s team anymore.

Now in his 17th season and at 52 years old, Tomlin has gone from the youngest head coach in the league to the NFL’s longest-tenured. His first training camp in Latrobe feels like a lifetime ago.

“Man, that was a different time,” Tomlin said. “That was medieval times.”

Even the oldest players on the Steelers’ current roster — Russell Wilson and Cameron Heyward, both 35 — never participated in two-a-days at the NFL level.

The Pittsburgh Steelers believe that through their physical approach, they have begun to establish the identity that will carry them through the season. (YouTube via Pittsburgh Steelers)

The approach was banned under the new agreement in 2011, Heyward’s first year in the league and one year before Wilson was drafted. (The NCAA eventually followed suit and ended two-a-day practices with contact in 2017.)

There’s no question Tomlin’s philosophy has evolved, to a degree. In adherence with the collective bargaining agreement, padded practices have been scaled back considerably during the season. Often, if Tomlin makes the Steelers wear pads during the season, it is to make a point that physicality is lacking on Sundays. Even early in camp, Tomlin will hold out veterans like T.J. Watt, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Heyward to protect them from themselves.

Tomlin also used to intentionally schedule training camp practices during the hottest time of the day to manufacture adversity. He has since changed his approach with a new strength and conditioning staff to practice earlier in the morning when it is cooler.

At the same time, the coach still very much sees the value in creating gamelike situations in Latrobe — and so do the players.

“I love it,” Warren said when asked about the environment Tomlin creates. “Although the days get hard, I love what it brings and what it creates.”

When the Steelers hired Arthur Smith, who is known for his run-heavy, tight-end friendly offenses, as their new offensive coordinator, Smith made a point to say he wants to have the most physical offense in the league. That has carried over to the practice field.

“Whether that’s being part of the run game or getting yards after the catch, he wants all 11 to be physical,” wide receiver Van Jefferson said. “He wants to be a physical offense. He’s instilled that in us from Day 1.”

What will it all mean when they finally start the season? Coaches often say that coaching a football team does not come with an instruction manual. And while there is no perfect answer when it comes to how much hitting is enough (and how much is too much), the Steelers believe that through their physical approach, they have begun to establish the identity that will carry them through the season.

“Other teams, they know what it is when they play the Steelers,” Warren said. “You can see what we built here.”
