Cayey Mayor Rolando Ortiz Velázquez proposed Thursday that the felling and pruning of vegetation to protect power lines be taken on by the municipality, with all current legal and environmental protections, given that LUMA Energy, the private operator of the island’s electricity transmission and distribution system, has been unable to handle the effort alone.
“There is a legal obligation, established by contract, to maintain a complete and effective tree pruning plan to protect power lines,” Ortiz Velázquez. “Over the past few years, LUMA has been charging millions of dollars and that plan is going too slowly. There are thousands of miles to be pruned and no one better than the mayors and municipal teams to do the job. It is the mayors, along with community leaders who know each neighborhood, each street and each community. Let us exercise common sense.”
District Rep. Gretchen Hau Irizzary (Cidra and Cayey) agreed with the proposal.
“We have a verifiable reality; almost seven years after Hurricane Maria, there is no reason for the Electric Power Authority (PREPA) to still be giving the excuse that the lines were not properly maintained,” she said. “It is
unusual for the vegetation cutting and pruning project to be going so slowly. It is unacceptable that there are even [utility] poles that pose a risk of collapsing, as well as fallen cables. Today’s issue is the disconnections, but what we are receiving from citizens are real reports of blackouts in different places, substations that explode because they are not maintained, poles and cables that are falling and becoming dangerous. The clearest example was the rain event of [Tropical Storm] Ernesto, which passed far from Puerto Rico. The wind blows and the power goes out.”
Ortiz Velázquez also pointed out that the collective memory is still alive with the reactions that occurred after information emerged indicating that LUMA Energy had canceled service agreements with subcontracted companies to carry out vegetation management tasks near transmission lines because, allegedly, the company did not have more funds for the remainder of the 20222023 fiscal year.
Also on Thursday, Aguadilla Mayor Julio Roldán Concepción formally requested through a letter to PREPA and LUMA Energy that immediate action be taken to resolve the energy crisis that is impacting more than 60% of subscribers in his municipality after the passage of Tropical Storm Ernesto.
In a letter to the directors of both entities, the mayor expressed his concern about the fragility of the electrical system and the need for a comprehensive transformation of the energy infrastructure.
“It is unacceptable that, with only moderate winds, our city has been left without electricity for more than five days,” Roldán Concepción said in the letter. “This is a clear indication that the system we have is not functional and that the company that is supposed to solve the problems in our electrical system is incapable, irresponsible and is not aware of the needs that our people are experiencing thanks to its ineptitude.”
Roldán Concepción went on to say that due to lack of action, he has made his municipal brigades available to LUMA to collaborate in the reconstruction of the Aguadilla electrical system and has requested the assignment of permanent brigades to deal with daily interruptions in the electrical service.
“To address the lack of electricity service after Hurricane Fiona hit Puerto Rico, our administration made the decision, as did several mayors, to create local brigades with retired members and former employees of PREPA who know how to solve electricity connection problems in our municipalities,” he said.

After months of meetings and construction and painting work, the Remington Christian Academy Puerto Rico in San Germán opened its doors this week to the southwestern town and surrounding communities.
“With great enthusiasm, we announce the inauguration of this great school, [which] had been closed for several years, the old Carlos Rosado School, as a sports and bilingual institution with a Christian base,” San Germán Mayor Virgilio Olivera Olivera said.
The modern installations are located in Barrio Sabana
Eneas, in the Municipality of San Germán.
“We open the doors in San Germán after exhausting and extremely responsible work,” Olivera said. “The entire investment has been private! This academy [is for] students from kindergarten to senior year of high school in the west of Puerto Rico in combination with the sporting focus with a Christian bilingual education.”
“The students receive an academic and sporting education that opens doors to universities of renown and great prestige,” the mayor added. “With a teaching team completely certified and bilingual, Remington Christian Academy Puerto Rico offers an excellent education aligned with Chrstian values.”

Authorities intervened this week at various auto repair shops, scrap yards, body shops and paint shops in Arecibo, where in the Miraflores neighborhood, several shops were inspected, cited and fined for not having the required permits in violation of the law.
The Puerto Rico Planning Board ordered the closure of two shops (cease and desist) and issued a fine of $2,000.
Environmental Quality Board staff issued $60,000 in fines, meanwhile.
Complaints were filed for: not having an automotive technician’s license, improper handling of diesel, motor oils and paint, as well as for lacking a record of entry and exit of vehicles.
About 20 vehicles were inspected, and 10 license plates were seized for investigation because they did not

The Vitrina Solidaria organization, the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture (ICP by its Spanish initials), the Banco Popular Foundation, El Yunque National Forest and the Municipality of Río Grande on Wednesday announced the celebration of the 4th edition of the cultural and economic event El Parrandón de El Yunque on Sunday, Sept. 1 on Palmer Street in Río Grande.
Vitrina Solidaria Executive Director Raquel Skerrett Escalera said El Parrandón de El Yunque is an open-air family festival that promotes the economic development of microenterprises that participate in its acceleration programs and makes visible the local entrepreneurships of the eastern region of Puerto Rico.
“This emblematic event provides an invaluable space for exhibitors of micro-enterprises and social enterprises (such as artisans), many of whom have started their businesses
with the support of Vitrina Solidaria’s El Yunque Emprende and La Y en El Yunque programs,” Skerrett Escalera said. “It is a cultural and entertainment activity for the whole family, which also promotes tourism in the area and contributes positively to the solidarity economy.”
“Come prepared to be surprised by the options of products, food, services and personal, family and even corporate experiences that you can buy or order that day,” she added.
ICP Executive Director Carlos Ruiz said: “At the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture, we reaffirm our commitment to the entities subsidized through the Cultural Rescue Program and we offer our support to effectively make visible the cultural management that is being carried out in different municipalities throughout Puerto Rico.”

Luquillo District agents from the Puerto Rico Police Bureau were investigating on Thursday an incident in which a vehicle belonging to a company subcontracted by private grid operator LUMA Energy was hit by several bullets on Thursday on highway PR-983 in the Las Viudas sector of the northeastern coastal town.
The vehicle, which was parked and unoccupied, was damaged in circumstances that are still under investigation.
As of press time Thursday, agents from the Fajardo Region Criminal Investigation Corps (CIC) were continuing with the investigation of the incident.
LUMA Energy, which manages the island’s electric power transmission and distribution system, issued a statement emphasizing that the safety of its customers and employees is its top priority.
“We consider any threat against our staff, dedicated to serving the people of Puerto Rico, to be very serious,” the company said in the

statement. “This morning, a security incident was reported in Luquillo, in which a gun was fired that hit a LUMA vehicle at a work site where company employees and support contractors were present. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries. We want to emphasize that our more than 4,000 employees work day
and night, always to serve Puerto Rico, and any type of threat is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”
LUMA added that it will continue to collaborate with the authorities in the investigation of the incident.
Meanwhile, in an earlier communique, the company said it continues to be committed to reestablishing electrical service for the 1% of the remaining clients affected by Tropical Storm Ernesto, prioritizing critical areas.
“This includes the PREPA [Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority] installations,” LUMA said in a written statement. “Our brigades have made constant progress in replacing the interruptor damaged at the Cambalache substation that serves the Arecibo Superaqueduct.”
The substation has been put into service and has reestablished service to all its clients.
“Our personnel continue working to complete the installation of the new equipment,” LUMA added. “In addition, we are coordinating with PRASA [the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority] to finalize the repairs to
improve water service for more than 40,000 clients throughout Puerto Rico.”
PRASA Executive President Doriel Pagán Crespo, meanwhile, confirmed that LUMA did not have significant contact with the public corporation’s management during the passage of Tropical Storm Ernesto.
That is what Pagán Crespo told at-large Sen. Keren Riquelme Cabrera during an accountability meeting on the actions of first-response agencies with regard to the storm that grazed Puerto Rico last week.
“It is a shame, but apparently communication during the Tropical Storm Ernesto emergency between LUMA Energy management and PRASA was almost non-existent,” Riquelme said. “That is totally unacceptable. LUMA has the responsibility to attend to the needs of PRASA as a priority; it cannot be relegated to not calling or not communicating with the executive [president] of PRASA or her staff. I could not believe it when we were informed that communication was poor. It is incredible and absolutely unacceptable.”

Numerous organizations favoring statehood for Puerto Rico unanimously approved the recognition of Edmundo González as the president-elect of Venezuela, democratically elected by the people of the South American country, and called for the rejection of the repression practiced by President Nicolás Maduro, as well as his defenders and allies in Puerto Rico.
Luz Z. “Lucy” Arce Ferrer, the spokeswoman and president of the Pro-Statehood Retirees Organization, reported that the statement of support for Edmundo González is in response to the danger that the dictatorial regime represents for Venezuelans and for democracy in general.
“By this means we want to express our solidarity with the
Venezuelan people, who overwhelmingly on July 28 chose a change toward democracy and the prosperity of Venezuelans in their country,” Arce Ferrer said. “We also express solidarity with over 8 million Venezuelans who have escaped their country from the repression, hunger and lack of democracy that they live with there. No country should live the humanitarian crisis of Venezuela.”
The organizations recognized González, whose campaign team demonstrated with documentation a wide victory that they said signifies a cry for change for Venezuela, as president-elect.
“We recognize and celebrate the brave leadership of [barred opposition candidate] María Corina Machado in organizing the citizenry to care for their votes and documents despite a coup effort by Mr. Maduro,” the local organizations said. “María Corina is a heroine of democracy.”

Rev. Pedro Rafael Ortiz of the San Pablo Apóstol Parish in Caguas has started a series of “coffee conversations” aimed at addressing Puerto Rico’s social problems, inviting gubernatorial candidates and other political leaders to participate individually.
The initiative is part of the “social and community evangelization project” that the parish has developed over the past two years, inspired by Pope Paul VI’s encyclical “Ecclesiam suam,” which promotes dialogue between the Catholic Church and society.
“The problems we face are everyone’s and affect everyone,” the priest said in a statement. “The democratic way is to discuss them together and know that only together can these problems find a solution. Because in a community like the human one, one does not save oneself.”
Ortiz said meetings have already begun with the participation of Juan Dalmau Ramírez, the Puerto Rican Independence Party and Alliance candidate for governor, and will continue with the other candidates
“We hope to conclude at the end of October, in line with the ‘8th World Day of the Poor 2024’ that Pope Francis celebrates

Josh McKoon, the chair of the Georgia Republican Party, boasted at the state convention in late May that he had “very good news.”
Georgia Republicans had just orchestrated a takeover of the State Election Board, an unelected body that sets voting rules. With this new majority, Republicans could enact an agenda that would help former President Donald Trump win in November, McKoon said.
“I believe when we look back on Nov. 5, 2024, we’re going to say getting to that 3-2 election-integrity-minded majority on the State Election Board made sure that we had the level playing field to win this election,” he said.
Since the takeover, the Georgia State Election Board has approved a host of rules on certifications and investigations backed by right-wing election activists who claim, falsely, that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump. The moves underscore a sharp rightward turn for what is supposed to be an apolitical body and have alarmed Democrats, election officials and even some Republicans.
“Clearly, the Trump allies have learned their lessons from the failure of the attempted coup of 2020, and they’re starting earlier and attempting to burrow more deeply into the most vulnerable pieces of the election system,” said Norm Eisen, a longtime Washington lawyer and chair of the State Democracy Defenders Fund, a nonpartisan election watchdog group.
If there is another chaotic challenge to the election results this November, Georgia is shaping up to be a hot spot, as it was in 2020. Polls show a close race in the state. Trump-aligned election activists there are well organized. Republican county officials have already shown a willingness to adopt practices from the election denial wing of the party. And the State Election Board will almost certainly be at the center of the dispute.
Like similar entities in other states, Georgia’s elections board was established to be an independent agency that determines voting rules and issues guidance for poll workers to maintain order and integrity in elections without consideration of their political impact.
But the board’s new right-wing majority has instead aligned itself with the goals
of conservative activists, drawing rebukes even from the Republican secretary of state.
For example, the board this month issued a new rule that could empower local officials to refuse or delay certification of a county’s election results they deem questionable.
The majority also requested another investigation by the state attorney general into questions of impropriety in the 2020 election in Fulton County, allegations that have already been investigated on multiple occasions.
The three board members who voted to pass these rules have been accused by watchdog organizations and Democrats of working with Trump-aligned activists in preparation to reject the results of a presidential election if Trump loses.
Members of the board, however, see it differently.
“I’m not looking at this as I’m trying to do something that’s going to benefit Republicans, because that would be a very idiotic approach,” Janelle King, a Republican member of the board who was appointed in May, said in an interview. “What I’m looking at is, when the petition is presented in front of me, I’m listening to why. I’m listening to past performance what the issues may have been.”
The right-wing takeover of the Georgia State Election Board is a significant victory
for conservative election activists who have spent the past four years looking for ways to influence the electoral infrastructure, with a focus on local institutions.
The three members of the Republican majority — Janice Johnston, Rick Jeffares and King — earned praise from Trump at a rally two weeks ago, calling them out by name as “pit bulls fighting for honesty, transparency and victory.”
“They’re on fire,” Trump told the crowd.
The new majority gets to work
With an effective majority, outside groups began to push their agendas to the board.
In April, the Election Research Institute, a right-wing group run by Heather Honey, an activist in Pennsylvania known for spreading conspiracy theories about elections, submitted a proposal to weaken certification requirements and allow counties to exclude results from individual precincts if there is evidence of discrepancies or malfeasance. While the rule did not pass, it received support from Johnston.
Johnston has also proposed a team to monitor Fulton County elections headed by Honey.
In July, McKoon sent Jeffares two new proposed rules — one on poll watchers and one on results reporting requirements — as
well as one-page talking points for each rule, according to email records obtained by The New York Times. McKoon included Josh Helton, a senior adviser for election integrity at the Republican National Committee, and Alex Kaufman, a Republican lawyer in Georgia, on the emails. The Atlanta-Journal Constitution first reported the emails.
McKoon, in an interview, said the state party regularly reaches out to the board on ways to improve elections. “Of course, I’m going to interact with and contact members of the board to advocate for that position,” McKoon said. “I don’t think I would be doing this volunteer job correctly if I was not doing that.”
Board members themselves have been active in meetings of the right-wing election activist network. Johnston has attended at least three virtual meetings of the Election Integrity Network, the sprawling activist coalition helmed by Republican lawyer Cleta Mitchell, according to recordings of the meetings obtained by the Times.
In a meeting in May, Johnston said in a message that she had spent “two hours at the DMV board meeting” and had been “invited to meet with the commissioner and secretary of state” to discuss helping election officials gain access to Department of Motor Vehicles databases.
During a presentation by the leader of the United Sovereign Americans, a rightwing group focused on election litigation, in another May meeting, Johnston again chimed in the comments.
“Please come to Georgia,” she wrote.
The Trump influence
The former president has taken an intense interest in the Georgia State Election Board, an obscure entity and one unusual for a nominee for president to focus on so intently.
In multiple messages on Truth Social, Trump has weighed in on the minutiae of state board of election meetings, including sharing the raw footage of a debate among board members at a public meeting.
The attention has concerned voting rights groups in Georgia.
“It is unusual for Trump to dive into details, so his specific praise for Georgia’s unelected State Election Board members is bizarre and should raise alarms,” said Lauren Groh-Wargo, the CEO of Fair Fight, the left-leaning voting rights group. “Trump is continuing to meddle in our state’s election, which is extremely concerning.”

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota formally accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for vice president Wednesday night with a plain-spoken but searing speech in which he lashed out at former President Donald Trump as “weird” and “dangerous” and leaned on his own Midwestern roots as evidence of the ticket’s broad appeal to voters.
“I’m ready to turn the page on these guys,” Walz said of Trump and Sen. JD Vance, the Republican nominee for vice president. He accused them of pursuing an agenda that will only benefit the “richest and most extreme” people in the country.
“It’s an agenda nobody asked for,” he said. “It’s an agenda that does nothing for our neighbors in need. Is it weird? Absolutely, absolutely. But it’s also wrong. And it’s dangerous.”
A former high school teacher and football coach who had never used a teleprompter until he was chosen by Vice President Kamala Harris to be her running mate, Walz demonstrated the energy that placed him squarely in the national spotlight. The speech was the biggest test for the jovial but blunt-spoken governor. In the 15 days since he joined the ticket, Walz has eagerly taken on Trump with a mix of biting sarcasm and witty commentary while defending himself against Republican attacks on his military record.
The Democratic National Convention’s third night included star power — from Oprah Winfrey, who told Democrats to choose “joy!” in her signature singsong — and some nostalgia, from former President Bill Clinton, who underscored the party’s desire for a shift from the old guard to the new.
Delivering a 28-minute address in which he warned against complacency and overconfidence, Clinton warned that Republicans were “really good at distracting us, at triggering doubt, at triggering buyers’ remorse.” Nearly a quarter century after leaving office, Clinton acknowledged his age, saying, “I have no idea how many more of these things I’ll be able to come to.” But the 78-year-old noted that he was still a few months younger than Trump.
The night also featured figures from the party’s next gen-
eration of leaders, including Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary, who noted that his life as a married, gay father “went from impossible to possible, from possible to real, from real to almost ordinary in less than half a lifetime.”
Here’s what else to know:
— The Oprah surprise: Democratic officials kept Winfrey’s appearance secret until the last minute, when the talk show host turned billionaire media mogul walked onto the stage after a short film she produced of ordinary people talking about the American dream. In her remarks, she warned that “decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024” and called out to independents and undecided voters and made it clear exactly where she stands: “We’re all Americans, and together, let’s all choose Kamala Harris,” she said.
— Jan. 6: A graphic video showing the 2021 attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters teed up a series of speakers warned about Trump’s refusal to accept the results of the
election. The video ended with the words “If reelected, he will never be held accountable.” Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker, focused heavily in her remarks on the Jan. 6 attack. On that day, rioters specifically sought to break into her office, threateningly shouting her name in the halls of Congress where she has served for more than three decades.
— Defending border policy: Several speakers aggressively confronted a topic long believed to be a Republican advantage — the southern border. They hammered Trump for persuading Republicans to kill a bipartisan border bill that Harris supported, calling it a cynical political calculation on the former president’s part. “All he knows is tearing families apart,” said Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., one of several speakers who said Harris would balance border security and the humanitarian concerns of migrants seeking refuge.
— Hostage’s family speaks: While the evening featured much of the same enthusiasm that has seized the party since Harris’ ascent to the top the ticket, two speakers stilled the crowd: Rachel Goldberg and Jon Polin, the parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, one of the Americans held hostage in the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7. “Hersh, if you can hear us, we love you. Stay strong. Survive,” Goldberg said. The couple praised President Joe Biden and Harris for seeking the return of their son and other hostages, even as protesters outside the convention demanded a greater focus on Palestinians killed in Gaza.
— A candidacy in peril: Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the political scion whose independent candidacy for president has long been viewed as potentially playing a spoiler role in the election, is expected to end his troubled campaign this week, according to three people briefed on his plans, and is in talks to throw his support behind Trump. His campaign, strapped for money and facing hurdles getting onto the ballot in a number of states, has scheduled an event for Friday in Arizona.
— Trump in North Carolina: Trump and Vance campaigned Wednesday afternoon in Asheboro, North Carolina, focusing on national security in a state that Trump won twice. The Republican ticket appeared to be on solid footing in North Carolina before Biden withdrew from the race last month and endorsed Harris. She edged ahead of Trump in the state in a recent poll from The New York Times and Siena College.

The Federal Aviation Administration said earlier this week that it had asked the Justice Department to consider bringing criminal charges in 43 serious and dangerous incidents from the past year involving unruly passengers aboard planes.
Since late 2021, the FAA has referred 310 cases to the FBI, following a commitment between the two agencies to collaborate more closely on the criminal prosecution of unruly airline passengers when warranted.
As of Aug. 18, airlines reported 1,375 incidents of unruly passengers to the FAA. In the past year, the agency has forwarded 43 cases to the FBI for potential criminal charges. These incidents include attacks on crew members, sexual assaults on passengers and attempts to breach the cockpit.
“There’s absolutely no excuse for unruly behavior,” Michael Whitaker, the FAA’s administrator, said in a statement. “It threatens the safety of everyone on board, and we have zero tolerance for it.”
Unruly passenger behavior surged during the pandemic, prompting the FAA in 2021 to implement a zero-tolerance policy for such conduct and begin issuing fines instead of warning letters to offenders. The agency reported approximately 6,000 such incidents in 2021, a sharp rise compared with about 1,000 reports in 2020. The number of incidents reported in 2023 fell to 2,100 but still represented an uptick from the years preceding the pandemic.
The FAA lacks criminal enforcement authority and can only impose fines for un-

ruly and violent behavior, with penalties up to $37,000 per violation. More serious cases that the agency believes warrant criminal prosecution must be referred to the FBI. Typically, the aviation agency only refers the most egregious cases.
In April 2021, the FAA announced that its zero-tolerance policy would become permanent, even after a court order ended the mask mandate that had caused friction with passengers who did not want to comply. Later
that year, Stephen Dickson, the agency’s administrator at the time, sent a letter to airport leaders highlighting alcohol as a frequent contributor to unruly behavior.
“Our investigations show that alcohol often contributes to this unsafe behavior,” Dickson wrote.
A 2021 national survey conducted by the Association of Flight Attendants union revealed that nearly all flight attendants had dealt with unruly passengers that year, and 1 in 5
had been attacked. The survey identified mask compliance, alcohol, routine safety reminders, flight delays, and cancellations as common factors in these interactions. Many instances involved multiple contributing factors.
“The vast majority of passengers comply with all flight crew instructions and follow all federal laws and regulations that apply to air travel, however, one incident is one too many,” said Marli Collier, a spokesperson with Airlines for America, a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers.
The flight attendants’ union called for increased action from the Justice Department and the FAA to curb passenger misbehavior. In response, the two government entities established an informationsharing protocol for referring unruly passenger cases to the FBI. The aviation agency also announced a new partnership with the Transportation Security Administration, under which fined unruly passengers may lose PreCheck privileges.
Sara Nelson, the international president of the flight attendants’ union, said travel woes had helped fuel the rise in troubling passenger behavior. Struggles getting home because of flight delays and cancellations add to the frustration for passengers, she said. She also pointed to increased drinking at airport bars before boarding as passengers wait for delayed aircraft as a contributing factor.
“The entire system is stretched very thin and all of the basic human needs that need to be addressed for people to just simply be able to follow the rules and remain calm are now at stressor points,” Nelson said.

Boeing said earlier this week that it had paused test flights of the 777-9, a large plane whose development had already been delayed by years, after discovering problems with a key part.
The airplane manufacturer discovered the problem with a structural component within the engine housing, during routine maintenance on one of four test planes. None of the three other planes had flights scheduled. Each engine includes a redundant version of the part, which is custom-made for the 777-9, according to Boeing.
The company is replacing the part and investigating the issue on each plane and “will resume flight testing when ready,” Boeing said.
The pause is the latest blow to development of the 777X series of planes, starting with the 777-9. Boeing operated its first 777-9 flight in January 2020, saying at the time that it expected deliveries to begin the next year.
The 777-9 is a large, twin-aisle plane designed for long-distance, international flights. It is capable of carrying around 426 passengers over a distance of more than 7,200 nautical miles. Boeing plans to later build a slightly smaller version of the plane capable of traveling farther, the 777-8, and a cargo version, the 777-8 Freighter.
Boeing did not say how long it expected the pause in test flights to last or whether it would delay its first delivery of the 777-9, which the company expects to happen next year. The Federal Aviation Administration said Boeing notified the agency about the problem last week, and the company said it planned to keep the FAA updated on its findings. The pause in test flights was reported earlier by The Air Current, an aviation news service.
Boeing began flights of the model for FAA certification in July, though it had been testing the plane on its own for some time. The test fleet had already carried out more than 1,300 flights in various regions and conditions
as of the end of last month, Dave Calhoun, the company’s former CEO, said on a call with investor analysts at the time. Calhoun stepped down this month and was succeeded by Kelly Ortberg, a former CEO of Rockwell Collins, a major supplier to Boeing and its main rival, Airbus. Calhoun’s departure had been announced after a harrowing episode in January in which a panel of a Boeing 737 Max blew off during an Alaska Airlines flight. There were no major injuries from that event, but it and an earlier crisis involving two fatal 737 Max crashes five years ago have slowed production at Boeing and contributed to the widening gap between the company and Airbus.
All three major U.S. stock indexes lost ground on Thursday, weighed by technology shares, as Treasury yields rose on easing recession fears and global central bank officials convened at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium.

Central bank officials from around the world have gathered in Jackson Hole for the annual Economic Symposium. Investors will be laser focused on Powell’s address on Friday for clues on the timing and extent of the Fed’s policy easing cycle.
Powell is expected to assure the markets that the Fed will cut rates in September, Ladner said. “He’ll be coy with the question about whether it’s going to be a 25 or 50 basis point cut, but will probably try to lead the market towards 25.”
“He will say he expects to start slow but will also emphasize that if they do see any further weakness in the labor market they can speed things up,” Ladner added.
News of increasing U.S. jobless claims, following Wednesday’s sharply lower benchmark payrolls revision, appear to confirm the labor market is less robust than expected and is gradually softening. This soothed recession fears while bolstering the case for a 25 basis point rate cut at the Fed’s upcoming September policy meeting.
That sentiment was echoed in remarks on Thursday from Kansas City Fed President Frank Schmid, Boston Fed President Susan Collins, and Philadelphia Fed President Patrick Harker, all of whom indicated that a rate-cutting phase is shortly forthcoming.
“What Fed officials are saying is a rate cut is definitely on the table, but there’s still time between now and September and data can move things,” Martin said.
According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 lost 48.66 points, or 0.87%, to end at 5,572.19 points, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 292.92 points, or 1.63%, to 17,626.07. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 161.02 points, or 0.39%, to 40,729.47.
Among individual stocks, Snowflake raised its forecast for full-year product revenue. Even so, the data cloud analytics firm’s shares slid as its margin forecast remained unchanged. Shares of Zoom Video Communications jumped after raising its annual revenue forecast.

Venezuela’s highest court ruled on Thursday that the country’s authoritarian leader, Nicolás Maduro, won the July 28 presidential election, despite overwhelming evidence that Maduro’s opponent garnered the most votes.
The decision by the Supreme Tribunal of Justice asserted that Maduro’s claim to victory was based on a report from a group of “national and international experts” and was “supported by the tally reports issued by each of the vote machines.”
But the court — stacked with Maduro allies — did not share any tallies to back up this claim, despite demands from thousands of Venezuelans who have protested in the streets, as well as many in the international community, that his government produce evidence of his victory.
The decision surprised few Venezuelans, as the court has long been used to rubber-stamp the policies of Maduro, who is likely to use this ruling to strengthen his claim to the presidency. His new term is scheduled to begin in January and run through 2031.
Maduro is also likely to use the decision to argue that he should not engage in negotiations with the United States, Colombia and Brazil, which have all sought to persuade his government to publish evidence of his claim to victory, recognize the actual result of the vote and agree to a power transition if the tally shows a loss.
On election night last month, the
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro speaks during a news conference at Miraflores presidential palace in Caracas, Venezuela, on July 31, 2024. On the night of the vote, the country’s election council claimed that President Maduro had won more than 50 percent of the vote, but did not provide any evidence to back this up. (Alejandro Cegarra/The New York Times) The
country’s Maduro-friendly election council said that Maduro had won more than 50% of the vote, but did not provide any evidence to back this up.
Days later, the opposition movement said it had won 67% of the vote, and published on its website a breakdown of the result by state and even by election machine, using tally sheets collected by statecertified election observers.
The United States recognized Venezuela’s opposition presidential candidate as the winner, ratcheting up the international condemnation of a vote riddled with irregularities. Even some of Maduro’s fellow leftist leaders in Latin America expressed grave doubts about his claim of victory.
But in response to foreign govern-
ments criticizing Maduro’s victory claim, the Venezuelan leader simply ordered some of their diplomatic missions to leave his country.
Still, the vote posed the most significant electoral challenge to Maduro since he came to office in 2013. Throughout the campaign season, his government made major efforts to weaken the opposition, including barring its most popular leader, María Corina Machado, from running for office.
Yet an opposition movement with enormous support emerged, with Edmundo González, a former diplomat, as the man on the ticket for the opposition, backed by Machado.
Following the election, several re-
views of the tally sheets by researchers and independent media outlets supported the opposition’s assertion that González had won. Both the United Nations and the Carter Center, which sent delegations to Venezuela to monitor the vote, said the election did not meet international standards of transparency.
Amid the dispute, Maduro said that the country’s supreme court would make a final decision on the election result.
He also sent security forces and armed militias, called colectivos, to crack down on the thousands of Venezuelans who protested his claim of victory after the election; ramped up digital surveillance; annulled passports of activists and others; and pushed for the passage of a so-called anti-fascism law, making it easier to arrest opponents.
All of this marks an escalation of repression in a country already suffering for years under growing authoritarianism.
Maduro’s socialist movement, called Chavismo, has been in power for 25 years, overseeing an extraordinary economic collapse and severe erosion of democratic norms.
The United States has tried for years to oust the autocrat, calling his reelection in 2018 a sham, imposing harsh sanctions on the country’s oil industry and, along with dozens of other countries, backing the head of the country’s legislature, Juan Guaidó, in 2019, when Guaidó declared himself the nation’s interim leader.
None of that succeeded in removing Maduro.

A53-year-old woman from northwest England was jailed for 15 months after posting on Facebook that a mosque should be blown up “with the adults inside.” A 45-year-old man was sentenced to 20 months for goading his online followers to torch a hotel that houses refugees. A 55-yearold woman was questioned by police for a
viral post that wrongly identified the suspect in a deadly knife attack at a children’s dance class.
These and other people are accused of being “keyboard warriors,” in the words of one British judge, exploiting social media to stir up the anti-immigrant riots that exploded after the suspect was arrested in the fatal stabbings of three young girls at the dance class, in the town of Southport. Their cases
have now become examples in a politically charged debate over the limits of free speech in Britain.
With the courts handing down harsh sentences to hundreds who took part in the violent unrest, and calls for the government to strengthen regulation of online content, some argue that authorities risk going too far. Not only are judges locking up far-right rioters, these critics say, but they are also opening
the door to a broader crackdown on speech.
The noisiest critiques have come from Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X, once known as Twitter. After far-right groups used his platform to spread disinformation about the attack and foment the violent disorder that followed, Musk waded into the debate, claiming that civil war “is inevitable” in Britain and attacking Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“The U.K. is turning into a police state,”
Musk posted Monday, referring to an emergency plan activated by the government to ease pressure on chronically overcrowded jails, under which defendants can be held longer in police cells until space opens in prisons.
A self-described “free speech absolutist,” Musk has ample commercial and legal motives to pick a fight with the British government. But his critique has captured genuine differences in how Americans and Britons view the imperative of protecting speech online.
“Elon Musk does represent a philosophical strand that is very American,” said Sunder Katwala, director of British Future, a research institute in London. “I think there is quite a big difference in perceived political calculations on free speech between the United States and Britain.”
British authorities, he said, are more willing than Americans to prosecute people for posting what they view as incendiary material. Katwala said polls show that most Britons are worried about the proliferation of “hate speech” and believe that social media platforms should be held to account for propagating it as well as for the violence that often follows. Outside of right-wing media circles in Britain, where Musk’s feud with Starmer has received admiring coverage, Musk remains an unpopular figure, according to recent polls.
The differences between the two countries on these issues go back a long way. Britain does not have an equivalent of the First Amendment to the Constitution, which sanctifies free speech, though it is a member of the European Convention on Human Rights, which contains a provision guaranteeing free speech. British libel laws give fewer protections to publishers, while privacy laws are stricter.
After the killings in Southport, a judge in Liverpool took the extraordinary step of releasing the name of the suspect, Axel Ru-

dakubana, even though he was not yet 18.
The judge said he was trying to curb a flood of misinformation on social media about Rudakubana, who was born and raised in Britain by a Christian family from Rwanda. False claims that he was a Muslim asylum-seeker had agitated far-right rioters, who went on to clash with police in several cities, besieging mosques and setting fire to hotels used to house asylum-seekers.
For all the cultural differences between Britain and the United States, legal scholars note that at least on the free-speech principles that came into play after Southport, they are not as far apart as it might appear.
“The common law tradition in both countries is that the limits of free speech are reached when it incites people to commit violence,” said Jonathan Sumption, a lawyer and former justice on Britain’s Supreme Court.
That principle, he said, applied in the
digital as well as the real world. “I don’t see why the internet should be regarded as any different than when someone stands on a soap box and addresses a raging crowd,” Sumption said.
But he added that for cultural reasons, American courts might come to different judgments than British ones. “A lot of the outcome depends on the psychology of juries, which may be different in the United States,” he said.
Critics on the right say that the riots could give the government the pretext to clamp down further on free speech. Some Labour lawmakers, they note, have talked about toughening the Online Safety Act, which was passed last year by the Conservative government and imposes new responsibilities on social media companies to remove content that is harmful to children and adults.
The already contentious legislation would give authorities the power to fine
technology companies up to 10% of their worldwide revenues and even potentially imprison their top executives for violations.
Critics singled out the case of Bernadette Spofforth, 55, an online influencer and mother of three who was arrested in early August. She was released on bail and has not been charged.
Disinformation researchers say she appears to have been the first to falsely claim on X that the attacker was a Muslim asylumseeker, in a post suggesting that his name was Ali-Al-Shakati. By the time she deleted the post later that day, it had been viewed almost 1.5 million times and reposted by prominent conspiracy theorists. Spofforth, who has previously spread misinformation about COVID-19 and climate change, told The Sun, a London newspaper, that she had copied and pasted the post, and “fell into the trap of sharing misinformation.”
Some people have also objected to a 15-month prison term for Julie Sweeney, 53, of Cheshire. After seeing a photo on Facebook of people helping repair a mosque that was attacked during a riot in Southport, Sweeney posted: “Don’t protect the mosques. Blow the mosque up with the adults in it.” She pleaded guilty to a charge of sending a communication threatening death or serious harm. Her lawyer argued for leniency, saying she was her husband’s primary caregiver. But the judge, Steven Everett, said, “Even people like you need to go to prison.”
Allegations of incendiary speech are not confined to the right. A suspended Labour Party councilor in Dartford, Ricky Jones, was charged with encouraging a crowd to act violently toward far-right protesters — referring to them as “disgusting Nazi fascists” and saying “we need to cut all their throats” — during a counter demonstration in the London suburb of Walthamstow. Jones has not entered a plea, and his case is expected to go to trial.

Even now, more than three decades after Bill Clinton became a fixture on the national stage, it’s startling to be reminded of the 42nd president’s preternatural political gifts.
On Wednesday night, Clinton spoke to the Democratic National Convention’s audience of thousands as if they were a few good friends gathered in his living room. His tone was warm, relaxed, conversational, uplifting. “Aren’t you proud to be a Democrat?” he asked in nearly his first breath, and the audience was his from that moment on.
His speech did everything an elder party statesman’s speech is supposed to do, most of all by making the case for Kamala Harris and — more brilliantly — against Donald Trump. “Don’t count the lies, count the ‘I’s’” he said of the former president’s fondness for speaking about himself. “His vendettas, his vengeance, his complaints, his conspiracies.” About Trump’s management style, he aptly observed, “He creates chaos and then he sort of curates it, as if it were precious art.”
Then, toward the end of his remarks, Clinton took a more somber, admonitory — and necessary — turn. “We saw more than one election slip away from us,”
he said. He warned Democrats to “never underestimate your adversary.” He reminded delegates that “there are still a lot of slips between today and Election Day that we have to navigate.”
Most importantly, with his wife’s politically catastrophic “basket of deplorables” remark surely in mind, he offered some much-needed advice: “As someone who spends a lot of time in small towns in rural areas in New York and Arkansas and other places, I urge you to talk to all of your neighbors, to meet people where they are. I urge you not to demean them.”
That’s good advice in any election cycle, but perhaps never more so than in this one. Democrats want Americans to believe that democracy itself hangs in the balance in this election. Perhaps it does, but undecided voters who recall similar dire warnings from 2016 will most likely be unimpressed. What they’ll be asking instead is how a Harris presidency will be better than the Joe Biden one with which they weren’t altogether happy.
Almost inevitably, Clinton ended by invoking his political mythology as “the man from Hope” to pay tribute to Harris as next year’s “president of joy.” Joy is great, but what Harris needs to do is convince wavering voters that she’ll bring down their cost of living.

In 2007, a young biracial senator from Illinois named Barack Obama was trying to convince Black voters that he was one of them. I traveled to South Carolina to see a set of speeches that would become a historic inflection point — Oprah and Michelle Obama codeswitching to tell the state’s Black Democrats that he was the real deal.
On Tuesday night, Michelle was back. She stood before an adoring crowd at the Democratic convention and drew concrete parallels between her Black American story and Kamala Harris’ “person of color” immigrant story. Mothers were the linchpin of her cultural analogy. “Her mother is like mine, and like yours,” she said.
If you trust Michelle, you can trust Kamala. That was the gist.
Michelle went on to code-switch to the audience with a juggernaut of shots at Donald Trump’s privilege, his abuses of power and his inarticulateness. Then
she owned the elephant in the room: naming Trump’s racist attacks on her, her husband and her children. She pulled no punches. “Who wants to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those Black jobs?” she said to thunderous applause.
Trump’s improbable run for president started as an ego campaign. Barack Obama made him the butt of a joke at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Trump would continue to tell one of his big lies — that Obama is not American.
Michelle Obama is the best messenger for this direct attack. After years of playing it safe, invoking the high ground, Michelle went straight for the jugular.
“Most of us will never be afforded the grace of failing forward,” she said. “We will never benefit from the affirmative action of generational wealth.”
That is a brilliant rhetorical summation of complicated ideas that boil down to this: Donald Trump embodies the inequality that is an enemy of democracy.
No doublespeak, no metaphors — just the

Neo, the hero of “The Matrix,” is sure he lives in 1999. He has a green-hued cathoderay-tube computer screen and a dot-matrix printer. His city has working phone booths.
But he’s wrong: He lives in the future (2199, to be exact). Neo’s world is a simulation — a fakeout version of the late 20th century, created by 21stcentury artificial intelligences to enslave humanity.
When we first saw Neo, though, it really was 1999. The idea of AI feeding on human brains and bodies seemed like a thought experiment. But the movie’s warnings about AI — and everything else — have sharpened over time, which explains why it’s been harnessed by all kinds of people in the years since: philosophers, pastors, technoboosters and technodoomers, the alt-right. Judged solely on cultural relevance, “The Matrix” might be the most consequential release of 1999.
The genius of the movie — what makes it incredibly rewatchable 25 years later — is that writer-directors Lilly and Lana Wachowski didn’t try to control the meaning. Instead, they seeded symbolism throughout.
Look with me at how one introductory scene manages to draw together many thematic threads, explaining why in today’s world of pervasive internet, AI, fake news and extremism, “The Matrix” feels more relevant than ever.
Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, is instructed by some shadowy presence seemingly in his computer to “follow the white rabbit.” That’s a reference to Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” one of the movie’s structuring literary allusions.
A chapter titled “Down the Rabbit Hole” coined the phrase that is now used to describe becoming so obsessed with something that you start to lose your grip on reality. We all know what that’s like, thanks to the internet. One particular rabbit hole “The Matrix” has pushed people into is a philosophical inquiry known as the simulation hypothesis, which asks whether we’re actually living in a simulation. If so, what does that mean for our lives? The 2021 documentary “A Glitch in the Matrix” even centers on a man who came to believe that “The Matrix” literally depicts reality, and it drove him to murder.
But even if you’re not in a simulation, your reality might start to seem unreal. A deeply Generation X-coded theme in “The Matrix” has to do with recognizing and eschewing soulless corporations and brainless systems. Neo’s day job in a cubicle farm visually echoes that human farm on which, he eventually discovers, the AIs feed. (“The Matrix” came out a month after the release of “Office Space,” which satirizes corporate malaise.)
Now, 25 years later, the Gen X dictum against selling out has been transmuted into a world in which influencers constantly exhort you to be your own boss at
a time when it’s harder than ever to make a living. That’s scary for those whose jobs can be replaced by AI, which is trained on the products of human creativity — frequently without the creators’ consent. The human farms of “The Matrix” were chillingly prophetic.
There’s more “Alice” to consider here. Carroll created a fictional world in which every character and scenario mirrored something in his Victorian-era reality. In the end, Wonderland is absurdist. Yet the reality that Alice lives in, with its imperious leaders and convoluted systems, is just as absurd.
That’s where “The Matrix” is headed from this moment. Whatever we think we know about the world around us is actually blinding us to the truer, deeper reality; we’re in thrall to an opiate.
Neo is a hacker by night who sells contraband on minidiscs from his apartment, including to a group of cyberpunk partyers. Neo keeps his discs and his profits in a hollowed-out copy of “Simulacra and Simulation,” philosopher Jean Baudrillard’s 1981 treatise, a foundational text for “The Matrix.” Much has been made about the links between the movie and Baudrillard’s ideas about how simulations and hyperreality colonize “the real” in a postmodern age, to the point that nothing is real anymore.
Baudrillard actually didn’t like “The Matrix.” He felt it misrepresented his ideas about simulation overtaking reality, flattening and misunderstanding the argument.
But let’s go down the rabbit hole further: “Simulacra and Simulation” is open to the essay “On Nihilism.” In it, Baudrillard suggests it does no good to point out “the truth” from within a system that denies or suppresses reality. In those circumstances, your only tool to combat
oppression is violence. You can only fight nihilism with nihilism. This is where the Wachowskis differ. Based on all four “Matrix” movies — including the last one, a swoony romance — their biggest inquiry is about nihilism vs. humanism. It’s about how we live amid systems that seek to deny and suppress who we are, and their answer, ultimately, is love.
Both Wachowskis have since come out as transgender women. A significant subset of fans now sees “The Matrix” as a metaphor for the experience of transgender people, an interpretation bolstered in the movie by statements about Neo’s very existence inside a literal binary system. In 2016, Lilly Wachowski said that “while the ideas of identity and transformation are critical components in our work, the bedrock that all ideas rest upon is love.”
But still more themes present themselves. The moment before we’re even introduced to Neo, we see his computer screen, on which news headlines are loading and scrolling, though nobody’s touching the keyboard.
In 1999, the term “fake news” wasn’t pervasive, nor was it saddled with the same kind of baggage. But the question of “official” truths and who controls them had come to pervade pop culture at the time; when “The Matrix” premiered, for instance, “The X-Files” was at the peak of its popularity. In 1999, the open internet still held the promise of promoting more truth, not less. As we’ve learned since, if truth can be distributed on the internet, so can conspiracy theories — or outright falsehoods.
And when we get a glimpse of Neo’s desk, we see another phenomenological allusion with a long tail into today. The word “cave” comes to mind. (The philosophical notion of Plato’s cave hangs thickly over this movie.) It’s littered with computers and tech gadgets: monitors, an ergonomic keyboard, that printer. There’s also an Apple Newton, a tablet-style device with handwriting recognition that was a predecessor of our always-connected iPads and iPhones.
Neo is constantly wired into the internet. Back in 1999, most of us still thought of the internet as a place you visited, not a gooey nebulous entity to which you were always connected. “The Matrix” gave us a hero who knew what it was to always be on, and the sense of unreality that could come with a life lived in a virtual space. All of these metaphors swim around inside “The Matrix,” and the one you see depends, ironically enough, upon which system you’re most interested in dismantling. Twenty-five years later, metaphors about capitalism and gender binaries and technological cages and artificial intelligence have only become more relevant, not less. That “The Matrix” keeps giving us more ways to read it reminds us of what an accomplishment it was. But it’s also a glimpse into how great art never has one fixed meaning, and because of that, it’s always a little dangerous.

Everyone knows you cannot be in two places at the same time. Those are the rules, the immutable rules of physics. But who knew you could play for two teams in the same baseball game? Those are also the rules — the wacky suspended-game rules of baseball.
So on Monday, Boston Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen may go where no baseball-playing human has gone before. He could become the first player in MLB history to appear in a box score for both teams in the same game.
“Oh, man,” Jansen said recently. “It’s going to be nuts.”
Since June 26, Jansen has been stuck in the batter’s box at Fenway Park in Boston, frozen in baseball time. Life has gone on, but the box score of that game tells us he is still batting.
It was the second inning. He was hitting for the Toronto Blue Jays, with one out and a runner on first. He had just fouled off a firstpitch cutter. And that was when the weather gods decided it was time to mess with the baseball gods.
Those raindrops turned into a rain delay. That rain delay turned into a suspended game. The resumption of that game was scheduled for Aug. 26. And then came the trade deadline. And Jansen was traded, for the first time in his career — to the team the Blue Jays were playing that night, the Red Sox.
What happens next?
When this game resumes, one thing is guaranteed: Jansen will not get to finish his atbat. The suspended-game rules may be a little zany, but they are not that zany, not enough to allow a player wearing a Red Sox uniform to
bat for the Blue Jays.
But here is where this could get fun: The Red Sox also need to change catchers. Reese McGuire, who was catching for them at the time, is on their Class AAA roster now, not their major league roster. So if Boston manager Alex Cora is as astute as we think he is, we are headed for one of the greatest public address announcements ever:
“Now catching for the Red Sox, Danny Jansen. Now pinch-hitting for Danny Jansen. …”
“Oh, man,” Jansen said, thinking of the possibility. “Such an oddity.”
It is an oddity, all right, but the suspendedgame rule makes so much weird and wild nuttiness possible.
It makes time travel possible. Because of this rule, Juan Soto made his official debut after his actual debut in 2018. He arrived in the majors with the Washington Nationals on May 20. But he later played in a game that had been suspended May 15 — and homered. That means he made his debut before his debut and also homered before his first homer.
It makes team travel possible. Because of this rule, reliever Joel Hanrahan won a game for the Nationals while he was playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2009, he pitched a scoreless top of the 11th inning for the Nationals on May 5. Then that game got a little slippery, in more ways than one.
It was delayed, suspended and finished two months later. But he had been traded to the Pirates by then. So, yeah, while he was hanging out in the Pirates’ bullpen in Miami, the Nationals rallied to win in Washington, so their winning pitcher was Hanrahan. What a magic trick.

But back to Danny Jansen. It makes no sense that a player could be taken out of a game, and then, at the same exact moment, be subbed into that game for the other team. But have we mentioned that the suspendedgame rule is inventive like that? Here is what it says, right there in Rule 7.02: A player who was not with the club when the game was suspended may be used as a substitute, even if he has taken the place of a player no longer with the club who would not have been eligible.
Yes!
Not that Jansen was intricately familiar with any of this when he was traded to Boston on July 27. But all it took was one day in his new clubhouse before he realized he was going to have to study up. Those Boston sports writers had a lot of questions.
“I didn’t know at first,” he said. “I was like, ‘What — am I going to have to go on the other team?’ I didn’t know what was going to happen. It just kind of caught me off guard about the whole situation. Because when I got traded, it was just a whirlwind at first, and I didn’t think about it.”
Will this be a baseball first? Don’t answer too quickly. There is, in fact, another living human who did this.
Unless you were a big fan of International League in the 1980s, you probably do not rec-
ognize the name Dale Holman. But did you know he has several artifacts from his career that are housed in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum?
And why is that? Because, in 1986, Holman did something that might sound familiar: He played for both teams in the same game.
He started that game in June, playing right field for Syracuse. He finished that game Aug. 16, playing left field for Richmond. But unlike Jansen, Holman was not traded. He was released. Then he hooked on with Atlanta’s Class AA team in Greenville, South Carolina. He was still there a month later when Atlanta’s Class AAA club in Richmond needed to find an outfielder in a hurry. Guess who got called up?
Naturally, just two days later, Holman’s new team was about to resume a suspended game with his old team, Syracuse. It almost went unnoticed, except that afternoon, a lightning bolt suddenly hit Richmond infielder Paul Runge. Wait, he thought, wasn’t the new outfielder in town playing for the other team when this game began?
“Until then, nobody had remembered it, even myself,” said Holman, who now lives in Miramar Beach, Florida. “But then Paul Runge did. I remember we were sitting in the clubhouse, and he said something about it. He said: ‘You’ve got to get in there!’”
So next thing he knew, Holman was in the lineup — and singled in his next two at-bats, against a team he was playing for as recently as the third inning. But that was not even his biggest claim to fame.
In the second inning, when he was still in the Syracuse lineup, he had hit a two-run double against Richmond. So not only had he played for both teams, he had gotten a hit for both teams in the same game. And even nuttier, he got credit for driving in the winning run against the team he was playing for when that game ended.
For nearly 40 years, Holman has had this space all to himself. As best as even longtime minor league historians can tell, he was the only player to play for two teams in the same game. So: Was he rooting for Jansen to join him or not?
“Well, he can’t join me,” Holman said. “He didn’t get a hit. You know, that’s the deal. So he can go ahead and play for three or four teams in a day. It doesn’t matter.”
Jansen found that amusing.
“He’s not wrong,” Jansen said. “I mean, I ended my day with the Blue Jays 0 for 1 — no, wait. I’m 0 for 0, and down, 0-1, in the count. So I didn’t get a hit for both sides.”
