Edgar Robles Rivera, the representative-elect of House District 14 (Arecibo and Hatillo), took an emotional Thanksgiving to the Centro de Transformación de las Tinieblas a la Luz Admirable, which is located in Arecibo’s Barrio Dominguito and is headed by José Feliciano.
The lawmaker-elect also committed himself to working hand in hand from the Legislature to improve the quality of life for those who receive services from the organization.
Robles Rivera said the gesture of solidarity stresses the commitment of
the New Progressive Party with people who struggle daily to overcome substance addiction and alcohol problems, a commitment that includes giving them support and an opportunity to start anew.
For the soon to be seated legislator, organizing the dinner was an act born from the heart, coming from a very intimate place Robles Rivera shares with his beloved father.
The representative-elect, who comes from the public housing system, knows the problems of addiction firsthand.
“Our father confronted problems with alcoholism and with the help of entities similar to this center he was able to beat this evil,” he said.

Consumer Affairs (DACO) Secretary Francisco González de la Matta said late last week that the agency he leads issued one fine and received 16 complaints related to early bird sales on Black Friday.
The official added that televisions, pillows and security cameras were among the most sought-after items in the sales.
“Pillows are everywhere,” he said Friday at a press conference. “People are taking them two by two, three by three. It has been quite a serious matter. There are also security cameras. There is also a lot of electronic stuff. We were already anticipating that there would be a lot of sales and that has been the trend today, but televisions have been the product that has been sold the most.”
DACO staff were busy observing retail activity at points of sale around the island on the first official shopping day of the Christmas season.
“The number is around 130 visits so far,” González de la Matta said. “Of those 130 visits, there were a total of approximately 16 complaints and only one fine so far.”
“The 16 complaints so far have been mainly about items that are not on the floor,” the DACO chief noted. “That is, the most concrete example being the consumer who is looking for a bicycle that was on special had a limit of two and was already sold out, but that store had ordered additional bicycles so it went to the warehouse and was able to get it. We have seen and the trend has also been that they have ordered more items and, well, that allows consumers who have been looking for a little extra space to get that product that they have been looking for so much.”
González de la Matta said the fine was issued at a business in San Juan over a matter at a discount table.

The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority might need to invest from $37 billion to $42.2 billion through 2044 to meet energy needs, according to information contained in the first interim 2025 integrated resource plan (IRP) presented by LUMA Energy to the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau last week.
The document is part of the ongoing process to design the IRP, the blueprint for the island’s energy needs. The information provided, which is essential for modernizing Puerto Rico’s energy infrastructure, covers generation, transmission, distribution, operations and the development of new resources.
The draft IRP presents four distinct portfolios, each modeled using the present value of revenue requirements, which represents the total system cost discounted to present value
over the planning horizon.
Portfolio A, estimated at $37.0 billion, focuses on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and biodiesel conversions, with no new utility-scale solar projects beyond approved ones as part of the renewable Tranche 1 and Tranche 2 energy tenders.
Portfolio B, which according to the document is $42.2 billion, anticipates higher energy demand and reduced distributed energy contributions. In this portfolio, new LNG units are built and then converted to biodiesel along with some of the existing units. It includes a substantial increase in the number of batteries built and does not add more solar photovoltaic resources beyond those approved in Tranche 1 and Tranche 2 tenders.
Portfolio C aligns closely with A in costs but incorporates more agricultural land for solar and wind renewables.
Portfolio D, at $40.24 billion, emphasizes utility-scale solar, battery storage, and biodiesel-powered LNG units, driven by optimistic cost and adoption assumptions, according to the 151-page document.
The final IRP submission is expected in May 2025, the document showed.
LUMA also gave customers suggestions last week as part of the campaign to ensure a safe and energy-efficient holiday season, including the placing of decorations at least 10 feet away from power lines.
Another suggestion was to avoid overloading receptacles and to evenly distribute plugged-in equipment across receptacles to avoid hazardous situations.
The utility also urged the use of UL-certified lights and decorations and the use of timers.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will extend to December 2025 the benefit of expedited closure to projects led through the Public Assistance Program, Central Office for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resilience (COR3) Executive Director Manuel Laboy Rivera announced Sunday.
Laboy said FEMA granted the extension, given the high level of oversight and transparency that COR3 demonstrated in the audit processes for disbursements, known as “Validate as You Go,” or VAYGo.
“The expedited closure is a significant advancement because it lightens the administrative process of reconstruction works and the amount of documentation required by FEMA from COR3 during the process of closing the projects,” he said.
“The audit covered fiscal years 2021 and 2022, and the results were practically perfect, as no errors were reported in
the process exceeding 0.001% in the first two quarters of 2021 and 0.0001% in the last two quarters of that year and in 2022,” Laboy said. “This shows that at COR3 we are fulfilling one of our main purposes of overseeing the correct use of recovery funds following the applicable laws and regulations, which gives us greater value, credibility and confidence before the federal government.”
The benefit was granted in light of the strict disbursement processes established by FEMA and overseen by COR3, which government agencies, municipalities, and non-profit organizations must fully comply with, he added.
The expedited closing process eliminates the need for COR3 to provide FEMA with voluminous documentation during project closures for state, municipal or non-profit government entities that have complied with providing COR3 with all documents required by FEMA in the disbursement process.
It is expected that FEMA will complete the audit for fiscal year 2023 by the end of December. The expedited closing priv-

auco Mayor Ángel Luis “Luigi” Torres Ortiz was full of praise about the progress of the work that celebrates “our history” at the remodeled Plaza del Mercado.
“The interior is a thing of beauty,” the mayor said of the plaza. “It’s like being in a big museum with impactful urban art, full of color and, above all, full of history of the town.”
“The works are mouth watering,” he said. “We continue to be focused on the reconstruction of the principal structure, its accessibility, and renovation of the green areas.”
The remodeling of the impressive structure seeks to
promote, more than ever, the economic development of businesses in Yauco’s urban center and adjacent areas, and to bring much more life to the urban center through a series of initiatives that Torres Ortiz says “could be as colorful as the Placita de Santurce in the Municipality of San Juan.”
“I can guarantee you that our new Plaza del Mercado will enchant you,” he said. “It will be very attractive.”
“We are making a series of aesthetic improvements that include paint, change of lighting, the installation of industrial fans, and walls that keep the pigeons out, among other things,” the mayor said. “We are also working on the restrooms and the [adjacent] plazas.”

The incoming government administration must be based on excellent service to the people, said the Ombudsman of Puerto Rico, Edwin García Feliciano.
The island’s top citizen’s advocate was emphatic in pointing out that the main challenge of the new government is to satisfy the people’s hopes due to agency heads’ possible negligence in fulfilling the citizens’ service expectations.
García Feliciano said that no matter how good the intentions, programs, and infrastructure or capital investment projects are, the people have already learned to judge by what was not offered and what was not fulfilled.
“It is proper that all the projects that need to be done are carried out,” he said. “But let’s not forget everything else, which the citizens anxiously expect from their government.”
He said that at the end of the day, the head of the government is the only one responsible before the electorate, who later charges him for what was not done or should have been done.
To underscore his point, García Feliciano used the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP) as an example. He said that an agency that does not have the flexibility to deal with daily situations, such as potholes in public roads, traffic light repairs, road cleaning, and countless other everyday situations, seems ineffective, even if it manages to pave 500 roads throughout the island. He pointed out that only some things can be delegated to the General Services Administration.
A similar situation, García Feliciano continued, occurs with the Department of Health. He specified that one cannot speak of health if one does not provide preventive care to citizens, who in some cases become patients with multiple diseases.
“If educational campaigns are not managed with a preventive approach, if the work plan is not discussed at the municipal level, if it [the Health Department] does not take an active role
in providing excellent service to the patient, or if it does not become an ally of the citizens in their fight against the insurance companies in coordination with ASES [Health Insurance Administration], it is doomed to failure,” he said.
The citizen ombudsman said further that the Education Department is another agency that needs to take care of its obligations on a daily basis. He cited examples such as not suspending classes because of professional meetings, greater flexibility in recruiting teachers or suspending the maintenance of schools in July.
García Feliciano was specific in stating that people expect children with disabilities, such as those on the autism spectrum, to be attended to, and for teacher absences to be reduced.
“In short, the day-to-day does not make the Department of Education an institution with serious administrative deficiencies without results or articulation,” the former mayor of Camuy said.
He added that it is essential to eliminate the excess of bureaucracy and give agencies the flexibility that allows them to be responsive to the citizens’ demands.
“Not understanding it would be falling back into the same thing,” he said. “It is necessary to re-evaluate all the lines for which citizens and merchants are billed, and to have agency heads who respond to the needs of citizens.”
In this regard, García Feliciano emphasized that the government has to learn to return calls, answer texts and emails, and not stop serving citizens and, especially the growing population of senior citizens, in a personal way.

San Juan Cruise Port, the private operator of the San Juan piers, said it is working to restore service to the damaged Pier 3 West after the U.S. Coast Guard declared that the facility must remain closed to cruise ships until further notice.
Royal Caribbean Cruise has canceled a second call in Puerto Rico by Symphony of the Seas that began Sunday from the Port of Miami because of damages to Pier 3 West in Old San Juan, according to Seatrade Cruise News.
It is the second time Symphony of the Seas has had to bypass San Juan due to the pier issue. The ship’s Nov. 17 cruise from Miami was also impacted.
In a note to passengers, Royal Caribbean said: “Due to technical issues with the pier and the work that must be done and cleared by the USCG for accepting a ship our size, we’ll have to adjust our itinerary for our sailing.” Symphony’s revised route also drops St. Maarten. Instead, the ship will call Labadee and Falmouth (Jamaica).
In April, the U.S. Coast Guard disallowed cruise ship operations on San Juan Harbor’s Pier 3 West, following an incident at the facility which resulted in the loss of a dolphin mooring structure just off the main pier. The USGC said it is awaiting requested satisfactory assessment studies followed by a Coast Guard on-site inspection of the facility.
After the April incident, the USCG issued a facility inspection requirements form to San Juan Cruise Port and the Puerto Rico Ports Authority notifying them of the established operational control until satisfactory mooring and berthing studies on the structure were provided for evaluation.
Luis J. Rodriguez, commander of USCG Sector San Juan and captain of the port in San Juan, told the publication that Pier 3 West receives the largest cruise ships in the world. Since the loss of the facility’s mooring structure, Coast Guard Prevention personnel have been actively working with San Juan Cruise Port and the Ports Authority to determine if the structure remains sound for cruise ship operations.
“We understand the inconvenience of this matter; however, it is critical we ensure the safety of the port, the cruise ships and the thousands of people who operate on or visit the island through this
port facility,” Rodriguez said. “My team stands ready to move ahead immediately once we receive the awaited studies from San Juan Cruise Port and the Puerto Rico Ports Authority.”

President-elect Donald Trump said Saturday that he wants to replace FBI Director Christopher Wray with Kash Patel, a hard-line critic of the bureau who has called for shutting down the agency’s Washington headquarters, firing its leadership and bringing the nation’s law enforcement agencies “to heel.”
Trump’s planned nomination of Patel has echoes of his failed attempt to place another partisan firebrand, Matt Gaetz, atop the Justice Department as attorney general. It could run into hurdles in the Senate, which will be called on to confirm him, and is sure to send shock waves through the FBI, which Trump and his allies have come to view as part of a “deep state” conspiracy against him.
Patel has been closely aligned with Trump’s belief that much of the nation’s law enforcement and national security establishment needs to be purged of bias and held accountable for what they see as unjustified investigations and prosecutions of Trump and his allies.
Patel “played a pivotal role in uncovering the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, standing as an advocate for truth, accountability and the Constitution,” Trump said in announcing his choice in a social media post.
He called Patel “a brilliant lawyer, investigator and ‘America First’ fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending Justice, and protecting the American people.”
Patel, a favorite of Trump’s political base, has worked as a federal prosecutor and a public defender, but he has little of the law enforcement and management experience typical of FBI directors.
He served in a series of administration positions at the tail end of Trump’s first term, including posts on the National Security Council and in the Pentagon. Before leaving office in early 2021, Trump floated the idea of making Patel deputy director of either the CIA or the FBI. William Barr, the attorney general at the time, wrote in his memoir that Patel would have become deputy FBI director only “over my dead body.”
The announcement also underscores Trump’s intense dislike of Wray, whose 10-year term does not expire until 2027. Trump appointed Wray to the job but soured on him within months, complaining to friends and allies that Wray was not running the agency the way he wanted.
Shortly after Trump lost the 2020 election, he called Wray and said that he was not going to fire him, even as he moved to dismiss other high-profile officials, such as his defense secretary, Mark Esper.
But Trump, whose fury with the FBI deepened after the agency executed a search warrant in August 2022 at his Florida club and home, Mar-a-Lago, in search of classified documents, suggested earlier this year that Wray resign. In declaring well before being sworn into office that he wants a new director, Trump was pushing

Wray to resign before he is fired.
“This is firing the FBI director,” said one law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the matter.
“It is extremely dangerous to have a change in an FBI director just after a change in administration,” the official said, referring to the long-standing policy of keeping the cycle for appointments of a director separate from the presidential election cycle and partisan politics.
A statement released by the bureau after Trump’s announcement did not address whether Wray would step aside.
“Every day, the men and women of the FBI continue to work to protect Americans from a growing array of threats,” the statement said. “Director Wray’s focus remains on the men and women of the FBI, the people we do the work with and the people we do the work for.”
Although a number of Trump’s allies expected him to announce a replacement for Wray, many did not believe he would ultimately select Patel, whose confirmation process before the Senate could be rigorous. Trump had at one point considered making Andrew Bailey, the Missouri attorney general, the FBI director, according to two people briefed on the matter.
Natalie Bara, president of the FBI Agents Association, did not directly address Trump’s selection of
Patel, but said the group “is committed to preserving the bureau’s independence and effectiveness in protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution.”
Strong leadership, she said, “is critical to maintaining the integrity and mission of the FBI,” and that agents’ commitment to upholding the law and protecting Americans “does not waver when there are changes in a presidential administration or if the leadership in the bureau changes.”
Current and former law enforcement officials have worried that a second Trump term would feature an assault on the independence and authority of the FBI and the Justice Department, and for many of them, Patel’s ascension to the director’s role would confirm the worst of those fears.
Patel laid out his vision for wreaking vengeance on the FBI and Justice Department in a book, “Government Gangsters,” calling for clearing out the top ranks of the bureau, which he called “a threat to the people.” He also wrote a children’s book, “The Plot Against the King,” telling through fantasy the story of the investigations into Trump’s 2016 campaign’s possible ties to Russians. He has vowed to investigate and possibly prosecute journalists once he is back in government, adding that he would “follow the facts and the law.”
“Yes, we’re going to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens, who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections — we’re going to come after you,” he said last year. “Whether it’s criminally or civilly, we’ll figure that out.”
In planning to remove Wray from atop the nation’s premier law enforcement agency, Trump would be echoing one of the most defining acts of his first term, his dismissal of James Comey as FBI director as investigations of Trump associates began to heat up.
That act led to the appointment of the special counsel Robert Mueller, who spent nearly two years examining the Trump campaign’s possible ties to Russia.

Lake-effect snow blowing in from the Great Lakes has blanketed parts of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York, stranding hundreds of vehicles on roads and snarling post-Thanksgiving travel plans for millions.
The storm is expected to continue dumping snow in the region into the week, meteorologists said, a troubling forecast for Sunday, a peak travel day as people look to return home after the holiday. Well over 2 feet of snow had fallen in many parts of the region — and more than 3 feet in some communities — as of Sunday morning.
“It’s going to be pretty brutal,” Brian Hurley, a senior meteorologist at the National Weather Service, said Saturday.
Some areas could see up to 6 feet of snow by Tuesday, with the heaviest snowfall expected along the belly of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario in Pennsylvania and New York. Governors of both states have made disaster declarations in these areas and deployed National Guard troops.

(Jalen Wright/The New York Times)
There have been some reports of minor injuries, and no reports of deaths, from the storm so far.
Here’s what we know about the lake-effect snowstorm.
Where has it snowed the most?
So far, parts of the eastern Great Lakes region, along a roughly 160-mile stretch of Interstate 90 spanning from northeast Ohio to Buffalo, New York, and northern Michigan have gotten the heaviest amounts of snow.

Additionally, several communities in New York received more than 40 inches of snow. Copenhagen, a village in the town of Denmark about an hour north of Syracuse, was inundated with 46 inches, according to the weather service. (The village and town were both named after their counterparts in northern Europe.) West Carthage, a village of about 2,000 people nearby, received 41 inches.
and potentially life-threatening.”
Lake-effect snow is especially dangerous for drivers because conditions can change rapidly — the weather may be clear in one area, but there could be heavy snow and poor visibility just a few miles away.
Hundreds of vehicles had been stranded on the roads, Brenton Davis, executive of Erie County, Pennsylvania, said Saturday. Some motorists slept in their vehicles at nearby gas stations to wait out the hazardous conditions Friday night. One woman who was traveling from Buffalo to her home in Columbus, Ohio, said the trip took longer than 24 hours after she was stranded on the highway for hours.
When will it end?
Forecasters expect the lake-effect snow to continue at least through Tuesday, though the intensity of the storm is expected to taper off by then.
“In the next 72 hours, we are still looking at additional multiple feet to the tune of 3, maybe as much as 4 more feet,” Hurley said Saturday evening. The areas around Lake Erie in Pennsylvania and New York could see another 2 or 3 feet of snow, he added. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula could get an additional 2 feet, and forecasters expect another 12 to 18 inches in northeastern Ohio by Tuesday. In Buffalo, up to 20 inches of snow could fall through Sunday.
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula saw recordbreaking snowfall Friday. The resort town of Gaylord received more than 2 feet, breaking a previous daily record of 17 inches in 1942, the weather service said.
At least an additional 2 feet of snow had fallen over parts of the Upper Peninsula by Sunday morning, and another 10 inches were expected Sunday, forecasters said.
But on Sunday, the brunt of the snow — up to a foot and a half — is expected to fall on Watertown, New York, a city of about 25,000 on the eastern banks of Lake Ontario. Mayor Sarah Pierce of Watertown had canceled city events Saturday and said there was an “all hands on deck” effort across city departments to respond to the storm.
Are roads closed? What about airports?
The snow has wreaked havoc on travelers, prompting road closures and commercial truck bans along sections of Interstate 90 in New York near the Pennsylvania state line Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Officials urged motorists to stay home. The weather service in Cleveland warned of whiteout conditions that could make travel “treacherous
A shift in air flow is forecast to push the snow into central New York starting Sunday evening, bringing 3 to 6 inches to the Syracuse area.
The changing conditions may provide only a brief reprieve, as forecasters predict more lake-effect snow could return later in the week. What’s causing the storm, and when did it start?
The lake-effect storm, which began Thursday, was the result of persistent winds pushing cold air over the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes. This type of storm usually picks up moisture over the lakes and dumps it over colder land once moving ashore, turning it into huge amounts of snow.
Lake-effect snow is typical in the Great Lakes region this time of year, Hurley said, as water temperatures are as warm as they will be through the rest of the season.
How else has the storm affected communities?
Aside from travel snags, the snowstorm upended plans even for people who had stayed put. Schools announced snow days for Monday. Religious services were canceled, and many businesses were closed. Local events, like the one in Erie that was supposed to feature local vendors, restaurants and museums, were postponed.

Drug company executives had hoped that a second Trump administration would be staffed by friendly health policy officials who would reduce regulation and help their industry boom.
But some of President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed nominees are instead alarming drugmakers, according to interviews with people in the industry.
For health secretary, Trump chose Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a longtime vaccine skeptic with no medical or public health training who has accused drug companies of the “mass poisoning” of Americans.
Trump’s pick to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is Dr. Dave Weldon, a former Congress member from Florida who raised doubts about vaccines and pushed to move most vaccine safety research from the agency.
And Trump’s choice to run the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, former television host Dr. Mehmet Oz, has scant experience in managing a large bureaucracy like the one he may now oversee; the agency is in charge of health care programs that cover more than 150 million Americans.
In Trump’s first term as president, pharmaceutical executives largely cheered his health policy nominees. They had ties to the moderate wing of the Republican Party and decades of conventional experience, including at major drug companies.
John LaMattina, who was once the top scientist at Pfizer and is now a senior partner at PureTech Health, a firm that creates biotech startups, said of those officials, “You could disagree with them, but at least there’s a certain knowledge base, and they’ve given serious thought to these issues.”
He added, “We’re now seeing some people without any sort of background, and that’s worrisome.”
The implications remain unclear for Americans who rely on medications or on widespread immunity from diseases that, for now, are rare. Some in the Trump administration want to speed drug approvals, potentially seeding the market with drugs of uncertain effectiveness. Kennedy has in some forums called for more independent safety reviews of established vaccines, and at other times, he has demanded fewer constraints on unconventional and unproven treatments.
But Kennedy has also tapped in to veins of outrage among consumers and lawmakers, who have long vilified drug companies for setting high prices on certain drugs and reaping billions of dollars in profits rather than putting patients first.
In choosing such a vociferous critic as Kennedy, the president-elect stunned the sector, causing vaccine and biotechnology stocks to plummet temporarily.
And though Kennedy most recently said that he would not take vaccines away from Americans who want them, even a modest reduction in the number of people receiving certain shots could spook investors and translate into hundreds of millions of dollars of lost revenue. The industry is also concerned that drug approvals could be delayed if Kennedy makes good on his threats to fire drug regulators, or if they quit in droves to avoid working under his leadership.
“There was cautious optimism on Trump when he won,
and that was very rapidly replaced with concern over RFK Jr.,” said Brian Skorney, a drug industry analyst at the investment bank Baird.
Drug companies’ political action committees made millions of dollars in contributions to Democrats and Republicans this election cycle, and the industry’s lobbying groups can wield considerable influence over policy and legislation.
Top pharmaceutical executives have said little publicly about Trump’s picks for health policy positions, seeking to avoid alienating the people who would regulate them. Their lobbying groups have publicly issued polite statements saying they want to work constructively with the administration.
Drug industry officials have a long list of concerns about Kennedy, who did not return a request for comment for this article. They are particularly worried that he could seek to undermine childhood vaccines; one way would be for him to push to revise the government’s recommendations on immunizations.
Kennedy has also called for overturning legal protections that shield vaccine makers from litigation when people are seriously harmed by vaccines — a change that would upend an established compensation program and could expose the industry to costly lawsuits.
The stakes appear to be highest for companies that make vaccines. About a fifth of Merck’s revenue comes from two types of vaccines that Kennedy has targeted: a vaccine against the human papillomavirus that has averted thousands of cancer cases, and the shots that children receive to protect them against measles, mumps and rubella. (Merck declined to comment.)
Vaccine sales represent about 3% of the industry’s overall prescription drug revenues, according to IQVIA, an industry data

Kennedy, Jr. speaks to reporters at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia in advance of the presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, Sept. 10, 2024. provider. With some exceptions, vaccines tend to generate relatively low returns compared with profits from more expensive products used for diseases like cancer and arthritis.
Drug manufacturers also fear the effect Kennedy could have at the Food and Drug Administration. They often complain that the agency can be too onerous, but their business model is reliant on a well-staffed FDA that can weed out would-be competitors that haven’t met its standards for safety and effectiveness.
Kennedy regularly lambastes the FDA as “corrupt” and too close to the drug industry. He has denounced the fees the agency receives from makers of medical devices and drugs, which make up about half of its $7.2 billion annual budget.
It’s unclear how Kennedy’s views will mesh with those of Jim O’Neill, a Silicon Valley investor and former government official who would serve as his deputy if he is confirmed. O’Neill, a former top aide to billionaire Peter Thiel, has called for approving drugs once they’ve been shown to be safe but before they have been shown to be effective. That idea goes well beyond the deregulation favored by most pharmaceutical executives.
Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s transition who will be his press secretary, described the president-elect’s choices for administration posts as “highly qualified” and reflective of “his priority to put America First.”
Although lawmakers in both parties frequently criticize the drug industry for charging high prices, Kennedy paints pharmaceutical companies in a much harsher light.
In an interview last year, Kennedy called vaccine makers “the most corrupt companies in the world” and “serial felons.” He has advanced falsehoods about the science underlying some of the industry’s most influential products, suggesting that vaccines cause autism and that HIV may not be the true cause of AIDS. He has embraced an increasingly popular notion that healthy food and lifestyle changes — not pharmaceutical products — will heal sick people. Referring to drug companies, he wrote on the social platform X this year, “The sicker we get the richer and more powerful they become.”
Pharmaceutical officials were relieved by Trump’s pick to lead the FDA, Dr. Martin Makary, who has a contrarian bent but has been aligned with scientific consensus on vaccine safety and is not seen as a threat to unwind the status quo.
Drug companies hope to have an ally in Vivek Ramaswamy, who made his fortune as a biotechnology executive and has been named to lead a government efficiency effort alongside Elon Musk. Ramaswamy has been critical of what he describes as regulatory red tape that slows new drug approvals.
And O’Neill, the president-elect’s choice for deputy health secretary, has close ties to some biotechnology and medical technology companies, though he is less well-connected to major industry players.
Bracing for the potential of public attacks and new proposals that could hurt their bottom lines, drug companies are said to be reaching out to contacts close to Trump in hopes of influencing the incoming administration. Some are also considering new ways to defend their businesses from government initiatives they consider detrimental.
Drug industry officials have long regarded Trump as a wild card, just as likely to be a boon as a foe.
Global investors stepped up purchases in equity funds in the week ended Nov. 27, encouraged by prospects of robust U.S. growth under the Trump administration and boosted by cooling treasury yields.
Investors pumped a substantial $12.19 billion into global equity funds, a jump of 32% compared with about $9.24 billion worth of net acquisitions in the week before, LSEG Lipper data showed. It marked the ninth consecutive weekly inflow.
On Friday, global shares were on track for their best month since May, driven by optimism about strong U.S. growth and the artificial intelligence investment boom, despite concerns over political turmoil and economic slowdown in Europe.
Last week, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s appointment of fiscal hawk Scott Bessent as U.S. Treasury Secretary raised market expectations of controlled debt levels in his second term, leading to a drop in Treasury yields.
Investors picked a significant $12.78 billion worth of U.S. equity funds, extending net purchases into a fourth successive week. However, they withdrew $1.17 billion and $267 million out of Asian and European funds, respectively.
The financial sector witnessed robust demand as it drew $2.65 billion in net purchases, the fifth weekly inflow in a row. Investors also snapped up consumer discretionary, tech and industrials sector funds totaling a hefty $1.01 billion, $807 million and $778 million, respectively.
Global bond funds witnessed inflows for the 49th successive week. Investors poured $8.82 billion into these funds.
Corporate bond funds received a net $2.16 billion, the biggest weekly inflow in four weeks. Government bond funds and loan participation funds also witnessed notable purchases, totaling a net $1.9 billion and $1.34 billion, respectively.
At the same time, investors ditched $12.87 billion worth of money market funds in a second straight week of net sales.
The gold and precious metals funds gained a net $538 million, marking a 14th weekly inflow in 16 weeks.
Data covering 29,635 emerging market funds indicated that equity funds were out of favour for a fifth consecutive week with about $4.3 billion in net sales. Investors also divested bond funds to the tune of 2.58 billion, logging a sixth weekly net sales.
Europe’s STOXX 600 ended the week on a high note, bolstered by a rally in tech stocks, while investors analysed the euro zone inflation report to assess the likelihood of a larger interest rate cut in December.
The pan-European main stock index reversed earlier losses and was up 0.6% at 510.25 points on Friday, logging its first monthly gain since August. It rose 1% in November. On a
weekly basis, it logged a modest 0.2% decline. Technology stocks were the biggest boost to the index, gaining 1.6%.
Trading volumes were expected to be low, with the U.S. equity market open for half a day following the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday.
Euro zone flash inflation rose to 2.3% on a yearly basis in November, in line with
forecasts.
Markets are now pricing in a more than 80% chance of a 25 basis-point cut at the European Central Bank’s meeting on December 12.
Capital Economics’ analysts think the case for a 50 basis point cut still remains strong. “Data released this week suggest that the euro-zone economy is struggling,” they said in a note. While the STOXX 600 has achieved a modest monthly gain over three months, it significantly lagged behind the U.S. S&P 500. Investor sentiment towards the European bloc was dampened by several factors, including the potential for U.S. tariffs, political uncertainty in France, and geopolitical tensions.

Rebel forces advanced in Syria on Sunday amid fierce fighting, capturing the airport and military academy of the major city of Aleppo and attacking the outskirts of the western city of Hama, according to rebel officials and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Government troops loyal to President Bashar Assad were trying to repel them, rushing reinforcements to the battle and launching airstrikes on Aleppo, the Observatory said.
The rebels had captured much of Aleppo a day earlier in a surprise offensive. They now control a broad patch of land across the provinces of Hama, Idlib and Aleppo, in the west and northwest of Syria, according to information from officials from the rebel-linked administration and the Observatory, a Britain-based war monitor.
In a further sign of growing strength, the rebels also said they now controlled all of Idlib and issued a demand for Kurdish forces in Aleppo to leave with their weapons for the northeast.
The New York Times observed rebels in control of parts of Hama province as well as neighborhoods in the east of the city of Aleppo and parts of the countryside beyond it that government forces had held only days earlier.
Outside the city of Hama, Syrian government military vehicles could be seen all over the roads, apparently abandoned by fleeing government troops after they ran out of fuel.
The Observatory said that government troops were battling to defend Hama from being overrun and that reinforcements had arrived to man defensive lines around the city and several nearby cities and villages. Syrian government warplanes were also bombing territory now held by the rebels, including targets across the city of Aleppo, causing dozens of civilian casualties, the monitor said.
It said that government forces were receiving support from Russian fighter jets, which were striking targets across the countryside near Hama and Idlib province.

principles. But while its interpretation of Islam remained deeply conservative, the group’s governance was significantly less brutal and dogmatic than that of the Islamic State group, analysts said.
It now appears to be seeking to extend that control to Aleppo.
A Syrian government statement said that Assad had spoken to the leaders of the United Arab Emirates and Iraq on Saturday, vowing that Syria would “defeat the terrorists, regardless of the intensity of their attacks.” Syrian officials routinely refer to rebels as terrorists.
Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, referred to the situation in Syria in parliament on Sunday, saying that “Islamic countries must intervene to prevent America and Israel from exploiting the internal conflicts of countries and prevent the continuation of these crises.”
And the Iranian foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, headed to Damascus, Syria, on Sunday. Ali Moujani, an Iranian diplomat, said on the social platform X that the foreign minister was making the trip in a show of support for the Syrian government.
The rebel alliance is led by the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which was once linked with al-Qaida but publicly broke with the terrorist group years ago. Turkish-backed rebel groups have also joined in.
The United States considers Hayat Tahrir al-Sham a terrorist organization, and Jake Sullivan, President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, told CNN on Sunday that the administration has “real concerns about the designs and objectives of that organization.”
“At the same time, of course, we don’t cry over the fact that the Assad government, backed by Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, are facing certain kinds of pressure,” he said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
A National Security Council spokesperson, Sean Savett, said Saturday in a statement, “The United States has nothing to do with this offensive.”
Savett said, “The United States, together with its partners and allies, urge de-escalation, protection of civilians and minority groups, and
Russia, which is allied with Assad, has repeatedly come to his aid since early in the civil war that broke out in 2011, after protests over his autocratic rule drew a swift and bloody military crackdown. Russian warplanes are stationed in Syria and were instrumental to Assad’s retaking of Aleppo from rebel forces in 2016. Assad has also counted on military and political support from Iran and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah.
a serious and credible political process that can end this civil war once and for all.”
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham began as what was then called the Nusra Front, an extremist rebel faction formed as a Qaida affiliate that gained prominence early in Syria’s civil war. But by 2017, it had begun to embrace a more pragmatic approach than other hard-line groups, choosing to prioritize securing its grip on Idlib instead of continuing to launch major offensives against Assad’s forces, analysts said.
The group framed its moves as a true break with al-Qaida, going so far as to arrest some Qaida-linked people, according to experts who have studied the group.
It engaged with Western aid groups, journalists and researchers. It also sought to link Idlib’s economy to that of the outside world, develop the region’s agriculture and industry and build a government that provided limited services to residents.
Abandoning its rhetoric about establishing an Islamic state in Syria, the group’s leadership said it wanted to replace the Assad government with one more loosely inspired by Islamic
The Syrian military said in a statement Saturday that its operation to push back the rebels was “successfully” progressing and that it would soon initiate a counterattack. It tried to discredit reports about rebel advances, saying that the armed groups were spreading “false news” to “undermine the morale of our people and our brave army.”
Across the territory that had flipped back to the rebels, people could be seen tearing up Syrian government flags and pictures of Assad, including fighters and former Aleppo residents who were returning to their homes for the first time in years. Photos taken in Aleppo also showed the toppling of a statue that had apparently depicted Bassel Assad, the president’s elder brother.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada went to Florida on Friday night to see President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, two officials with direct knowledge of the visit said, after a threat by Trump to impose across-the-board tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico on Day 1 of his second term.
The visit makes Trudeau the first head of government from the Group of 7, a key forum of global coordination consisting of the world’s wealthiest democracies, to visit the president-elect.
Trudeau and Trump dined together Friday evening, one official said, along with a delegation of senior Trump allies poised for top trade and security positions in his new administration.
Trudeau was accompanied on his visit by Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s minister of public safety. The Canadian prime minister stayed in the area overnight, but not at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private club and home in Palm Beach, Florida.
The Trump transition team did not respond to requests for comment, and there was no information released about Trump’s schedule Friday. Trudeau, on returning to his hotel after spending about three hours at Mar-a-Lago, did not respond to questions about what was discussed over dinner.
In a statement posted to Truth Social on Saturday, Trump said the meeting with Trudeau had been productive, and that the two men had discussed important topics such as the fentanyl drug crisis, fair trade deals and the United States’ trade deficit

with Canada.
Trump said that Trudeau made a commitment to work with the United States to end the cross-border flow of fentanyl that has caused “terrible devastation” for U.S. families.
Trump also said that the pair discussed “many other important topics like energy, trade and the Arctic. All are vital issues that I will be addressing on my first days back in Office, and before.”
Trudeau has been scrambling to formulate a plan to respond to the threat
made this week by Trump to impose a 25% tariff unless Mexico and Canada take action to curb the arrival of migrants without legal permission to be in the U.S. and drugs across their borders into the United States.
Trump said he would sign such a measure on his first day in office, a move that could potentially cripple trade across the continent.
The threat was also seen as an opening salvo in what would most likely be a long renegotiation of the trade agreement among the three North American nations, known as the USMCA — the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the successor to the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Trudeau has tried to project calm and confidence, saying he believed Trump would see that tariffs would harm both countries, which are each other’s biggest trading partners. About 80% of Canada’s oil and 40% of its gas are exported to the United States, and the two countries are deeply intertwined through the joint manufacturing of cars, as well as in multiple other industries.
The Mar-a-Lago visit Friday, which was initially reported by the Globe and Mail newspaper on the basis of tracking
Trudeau’s plane, is intended as a direct effort by Trudeau to show that he has a plan to address Trump’s border concerns, and that tariffs should be avoided for the sake of both nations’ economies.
LeBlanc was given the task of drafting tougher border measures. He said this week that he was preparing to deploy additional staff, as well as drones and helicopters if needed, to better manage the border between the two countries.
The security and trade issues at the heart of the Friday meeting were also reflected on the Trump side of the table: The dinner, an official said, was attended by North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, whom Trump picked to be interior secretary; Howard Lutnick, who is Trump’s selection for commerce secretary; and Mike Waltz, Trump’s choice for national security adviser.
Trudeau’s response to Trump’s tariff threats contrasts sharply with that of Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum. Trudeau and other senior Canadian officials have sought to distinguish Canada’s position from Mexico’s, highlighting that Canada is better aligned with the United States and Trump’s agenda on three key issues: the borders, restrictions on China and bringing well-paying jobs back home.
Sheinbaum has been firmer, threatening retaliatory tariffs if Trump made good on his threat.
The split has driven a wedge between two allies, Canada and Mexico, that were able to leverage their relationship to negotiate a favorable agreement during Trump’s first presidency. The trade pact is officially up for renegotiation in 2026, but analysts say they believe Trump’s decision to put tariffs against the two U.S. neighbors on the table even before he takes office indicates that a renegotiation of that agreement could come sooner than planned.
Trudeau is facing considerable pressure over how to handle this difficult moment. The imposition of tariffs on Canada would throw the country into recession, economists believe, as doing business with the United States is the lifeblood of the economies of several Canadian provinces.
But Trudeau is in a precarious political moment, too, after nine years in power. He faces elections in the coming months, and polls show his party, the Liberal Party, is set to lose badly to the Conservatives led by Pierre Poilievre.

Iadmire Mitt Romney. He is, by all accounts, an outstanding husband and father. He built a successful investment firm by supporting successful young businesses like Staples. He served the public as head of the 2002 Winter Olympics and as a governor. As a senator, he had the courage to vote to convict Donald Trump twice, in the two separate impeachment trials, when few other Republicans did.
But as Noah Millman writes on Substack, people in the MAGA movement take a different view of Romney. In private life, Romney compliantly conformed to the bourgeois norms of those around him. In business, he contributed to the bloating of the finance and consulting sector. As a politician, he bent himself to the needs of the moment, moving from moderate Republican to “extreme conservative.” As a senator, he sought the approval of the Washington establishment.
Millman’s underlying point is it’s not sufficient to say that Trump is leading a band of morally challenged people to power. It’s that Trumpism represents an alternative value system. The people I regard as upright and admirable, MAGA regards as morally disgraceful, and the people I regard as corrupt and selfish, MAGA regards as heroic.
The crucial distinction is that some of us have an institutional mindset, while the MAGA mindset is anti-institutional.
In the former view, we are born into a world of institutions — families, schools, professions, the structures of our government. We are formed by these institutions. People develop good character as they live up to the standards of excellence passed down in their institutions — by displaying the civic virtues required by our Constitution, by living up to what it means to be a good teacher or nurse or, if they are Christians, by imitating the self-emptying love of Christ. Over the course of our lives, we inherit institutions, steward them and try to pass them along in better shape to the next generation. We know our institutions have flaws and need reform, but we regard them as fundamentally legitimate.
MAGA morality is likely to regard people like me as lemmings. We climbed our way up through the meritocracy by shape-shifting ourselves into whatever teachers, bosses and the system wanted us to be. Worse, we serve and preserve systems that are fundamentally corrupt and illegitimate: the financial institutions that created the financial crisis, the health authorities who closed schools during COVID, the mainstream media and federal bureaucracy that has led the nation to ruin.
What does heroism look like according to the MAGA morality? It looks like the sort of people whom Trump has picked to be in his Cabinet. The virtuous man in this morality is self-assertive, combative, transgressive and vengeful. He’s not afraid to break the rules and come to his own conclusions. He has contempt for institutions and is happy to be a battering force to bring them down. He is unbothered by elite scorn and, in fact, revels in it and goes out of his way to generate it.
In this mindset, if the establishment regards you as a sleazeball, you must be doing something right. If the legal system indicts you, you must be a virtuous man. In this morality, the fact that a presidential nominee is
accused of sexual assault is a feature, not a bug. It’s a sign that this nominee is a manly man. Manly men go after what they want. They assert themselves and smash propriety — including grabbing women “by the pussy” if they feel like it.
In this worldview, a nominee enshrouded in scandal is more trustworthy than a person who has lived an honest life. The scandal-shrouded nominee is cast out from polite society. He’s not going to run to a New York publisher and write a tell-all memoir bashing the administration in which he served. Such a person is not going to care if he is scorned by the civil servants in the agency he has been hired to dismantle.
The corrupt person owes total fealty to Donald Trump. There is no other realm in which he can achieve power and success except within the MAGA universe. Autocrats have often preferred to surround themselves with corrupt people because such people are easier to control and, if necessary, destroy.
In other words, MAGA represents a fundamental challenge not only to conventional politics but also to conventional morality.
I suspect that over the next couple of years, we will see a series of running conflicts between institutionalists and antiinstitutionalists — not only a power struggle over the Justice Department, the intelligence agencies, the schools and the institutions of democracy itself but also a values struggle over what sort of person we should admire, what values should govern our society. The battle is on for the hearts and souls of the coming generations.
The anti-institutionalists have advantages. It’s much easier to degrade and destroy than to preserve and reform. We live amid a multidecade crisis of legitimacy, during which strong voices ranging from Oliver Stone’s on the left to Tucker Carlson’s on the right have sent the message that everything is rotten.
But character is destiny. An administration of narcissists will be a snake pit in which strife and self-destructive scandal will snuff out effective action. Running things is hard, and changing things is harder, and it’s rarely done well by solipsistic outsiders.
Those of us in the institutionalist camp will have to learn the lessons taught by George C. Marshall. Marshall, who served as chief of staff of the Army during World War II, was an institutionalist through and through. He was formed by Army manners. The very core of his ethic was this: I will never put my own ambitions above the needs of the Army or the nation.
Yet Marshall was no standpatter. He didn’t respond to threats from outside by clinging fiercely to the status quo. He was a comprehensive reformer. When he was asked to lead the Infantry School at Fort Benning, for example, he revolutionized the curriculum. He sent units out on maneuvers maps because in real war, you always have insufficient information. He shifted military training toward mechanized warfare and nearly doubled the number of hours of instruction devoted to tactics. He spent his career pushing against the stifling traditionalism that could stultify his institution.
Today, it really is true that the Pentagon is administratively a
mess. It really is true the meritocracy needs to be fundamentally rethought. It really is true that Congress is dysfunctional and the immigration system is broken. But positive change will come from people who have developed a loving devotion to those institutions over years of experience, not people who despise them — the modern-day George Marshalls rather than the Pete Hegseths, Tulsi Gabbards and Robert F. Kennedy Jrs. What kind of person do we want our children to become: reformers who honor their commitments to serve and change the institutions they love or performative arsonists who vow to burn it all down?

In the spring of 1967, blues singer Taj Mahal was about to cut his first solo album for Columbia Records and needed to find a new guitarist in a hurry. He headed to a Los Angeles bar in Topanga Canyon, tipped off about a young Native American musician with a mesmerizing touch on the Telecaster. Having already worked with guitar prodigy Ry Cooder in the short-lived band the Rising Sons, Mahal had high standards. But it took barely a minute of hearing Jesse Ed Davis for Mahal to realize he’d found what he was looking for.
“This guy was speaking through his instrument,” Mahal recalled. “In those days everyone wanted to play the blues, but they’d overplay their licks at high volume, trying to get up into the stratosphere. They didn’t have the natural feeling he did — Jesse legitimately had the blues and played it his own way.”
Revered by fellow musicians, Davis has remained a cult figure despite an extraordinary résumé: He played on some of Bob Dylan’s most enduring records, worked closely with multiple Beatles, anchored the band at the Concert for Bangladesh and shaped classic albums by Rod Stewart, Harry Nilsson and Neil Diamond, among others. A complex character who didn’t fit Native American stereotypes or the typical notions of a rock ’n’ roller, he’s remained something of an enigma since his 1988 death at 43.
That should change with the publication last month of “Washita Love Child: The Rise of Indigenous Rock Star Jesse Ed Davis,” a biography by Douglas K. Miller. In conjunction with the book, the Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is hosting a multimedia exhibition, “Jesse Ed Davis: Natural Anthem.” In February, some of Davis’ friends — including Mahal and Jackson Browne — will play a tribute concert at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.
“Jesse was a phenomenon,” said Browne, whose 1972 track “Doctor My Eyes” was transformed by Davis’ spontaneous one-take solo into a timeless pop hit. “He responded to music in such an immediate way. You always wondered how he became that kind of artist.”
That question nagged Miller, an associate professor of Native American history at Oklahoma State University. “Growing up, I saw Jesse Davis’ name on all these records that I loved,” he said. “But he was just a name in the credits. Listening to this beautiful music he made, I wondered, ‘Why don’t we know more about this guy?’”
Born in Norman, Oklahoma, in 1944, Jesse Edwin Davis III had a Kiowa mother, a Comanche father and an impressive family history; his relatives included the first female chief of the Seminole Nation, the first Indian U.S. Marshal and a noted Hollywood set designer. The family led a comfortable middle-class life, but as the only Native American in his elementary school, Davis “was bullied quite a bit,” Miller said.
He found refuge in music. Obsessed with Elvis Presley and Jimmy Reed, Davis picked up guitar in seventh grade, developing a singular style shaped by the powwows
to his work with Dylan in 1971 (on “Watching the River Flow” and “When I Paint My Masterpiece”), he grew close to Lennon during his “Lost Weekend” period — appearing on the “Walls and Bridges” and “Rock ’n’ Roll” LPs. Davis thought he might get a call to join the Rolling Stones, after the departure of guitarist Mick Taylor (he’d been considered to replace Brian Jones in 1969), but the gig went to Ron Wood of the Faces, whose singer, Rod Stewart, subsequently brought Davis on the road to play guitar on the band’s final riotous tour in 1975. It would mark the peak of Davis’ rock ’n’ roll journey, and the beginning of a precipitous downfall.
Over the years, Davis associates have pinpointed the Faces tour as the start of his growing reliance on hard drugs. But Miller’s book reveals that Davis had quietly nursed a heroin habit for years. “Jesse believed he had to feel things deeply to be a great bluesman,” Miller said. “Other times he wanted to feel nothing at all.”
he danced in as a child, his mother’s piano lessons and his attempts to imitate the horn players on the Count Basie Orchestra records he loved. Jim Keltner, a fellow Oklahoman and session drummer who worked closely with Davis in the ’70s, noted that “his rhythmic sense was different than anyone I played with. He had his own groove, the Jesse Ed groove.”
After playing in a series of local bands, the 18-yearold Davis hit the road backing rockabilly singer Conway Twitty. After stints studying at the University of Oklahoma and serving in the National Guard, Davis sought his musical destiny, and headed to Los Angeles in 1966.
Fate intervened when Davis linked up with Mahal, a hip young singer who possessed the power of the old blues masters. They became favorites among the rock cognoscenti, influencing the fledgling Allman Brothers, and getting invited by the Rolling Stones to perform in England. “We were the coolest thing going down the road,” Mahal said.
Davis, in particular, was embraced by the British rock aristocracy, forming immediate bonds with the Stones, the Beatles’ John Lennon and George Harrison, and Eric Clapton. In 1970, Clapton helped Davis land a solo deal with Atlantic Records’ Atco label, and over three years he released a series of organically funky rock albums — “¡Jesse Davis!,” “Ululu” and “Keep Me Comin’” — that mostly shied away from the era’s Native American politics or social concerns.
“Why didn’t Jesse become the voice of the Native rights movement or the Red Power generation?” Miller asked. “He certainly could have. He didn’t want his career or his place in the world to be defined by being an Indigenous person. He was leery of being a token ‘Indian artist.’”
Davis’ solo career never really took off, in part because he remained one of the most in-demand session musicians through the ’70s, playing on records by John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Cher and David Cassidy. In addition
In 1984, Davis entered a treatment center for Native Americans in Long Beach, California, and a few months later attended a performance by Dakota activist and spoken word artist John Trudell. After the show, he approached Trudell with an offer to set his words to music, and the two began a collaboration that would result in “AKA Graffiti Man.”
Released in 1986, it was a postmodern record filled with synths, drum machines and strident messages, and represented a second act for Davis. Dylan hailed it as the album of the year in Rolling Stone.
“Pairing up with John Trudell was Jesse’s way to return home,” said Muscogee poet Joy Harjo, artist in residence at the Dylan Center and co-curator of the Davis exhibit. “He decided to return to his Native peoples and make music about issues and ideas that had everything to do with how he grew up.”
In early 1987, Davis, Trudell and their Graffiti Band performed in North Hollywood at the Palomino Club with Mahal. “I’m Jesse Ed Davis,” he announced from the stage that night, “and I’m real proud to be an Indian.” Though physically diminished — using a cane, he played seated in a chair — Davis was joyful as his old friends Dylan and Harrison turned up to show support and jam.
Within months, though, Davis backslid into dangerous old habits. On June 22, 1988, he was found dead in the laundry room of a Venice apartment building, a fresh needle mark in his arm. The circumstances — Davis had a head wound and his shoes had been stolen — led some to speculate about foul play.
“He was right on the step of being able to get back to where he needed,” Mahal said, “and he just made the wrong decision, or let people make the wrong decision around him.”
Miller said, “The day he died was a tragedy, but the rest of his life wasn’t.” With the biography, exhibition and concert celebration — as well as an upcoming compilation, “Tomorrow May Not Be Your Day,” collecting his unheard solo work — there’s hope Davis will finally receive the recognition he deserves.

At the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard on the west coast of France, MSC World America is the latest mega cruise ship to near completion. Scheduled to cross the Atlantic in March, the vessel will be based in Miami, where it will offer Caribbean itineraries and take on the likes of Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas and Carnival’s Celebration.
Like its massive competitors, the 1,093-footlong ship towers 22 decks high, and is packed with dining venues, lounges and bars, and what has become the usual array of over-the-top features, including a sprawling water park. The MSC World America will also have an overwater swing ride and an 11-deck-high dry slide.
But what the Swiss, family-run MSC company hopes will really set the World America apart is the European influence on the ship’s design, its restaurants, activities and service. There will be Swarovski crystal stairs, a Mediterraneaninspired promenade, Italian marble details, as well as fresh croissants, authentic mozzarella and pasta, and artisanal coffee from Lavazza, an Italian company.
In the United States, MSC World America will be joining three smaller MSC ships that already sail out of New York, Miami and Port Canaveral in Florida.
A performance on the MSC World Europa, the sister ship of The World America, which is under construction, in Saint-Nazaire, France, Nov. 17, 2024. The 1,093-footlong, 22 deck-high mega cruise ship World America, nearing completion on the west coast of France, is scheduled to reach its Miami base in March, and will offer European influenced restaurants, activities and service on its Caribbean itineraries. (Ceylan Yeginsu/The New York Times)
The World America is modeled after the MSC World Europa, which currently sails out of Marseille, France, but around 30% of America’s space has been redesigned to cater to American passengers.
I recently took a tour of the nearly complete World America, followed by a three-day cruise on the Europa, where I got a taste of what Caribbean-bound passengers will soon experience on its sister ship. Here are my takeaways.
The space
When it makes its debut in Miami in April, MSC World America will become the world’s eighth-largest cruise ship, accommodating nearly 7,000 passengers. The scale and scope of the ship can be felt in the open-air promenade, the location of the vessel’s centerpiece — an 11-deck-high slide. The stern of the ship is Y-shaped, allowing room for more balcony cabins and sweeping sea views.
In contrast, the interior promenade, called the “Galleria,” which is spread over three levels and includes shops, restaurants and bars, felt a lot like a shopping mall. Sitting at some of the venues on the Europa’s promenade, I found it easy to forget I was at sea.
The World America will be divided into seven districts, which will offer various experiences and help distribute passenger movement throughout the decks. At the very top of the ship, the “Family Adventura” district will have waterslides, a ropes course, bumper cars and roller rinks, among other features. There will be an “Aqua Deck” with the ship’s two main
swimming pools, and a separate “Zen” adults-only area with more pools and hot tubs.
On the World Europa, some decks have endless rows of lounge chairs designed for Europeans, many of whom enjoy basking in the sun for hours. On the World America, some of these areas will be transformed into places where guests can eat, drink and take part in activities.
Food and entertainment
With 19 dining venues, there will be options for seemingly everyone, including two main dining rooms and two casual buffets. The extra dining packages include six specialty restaurants. Among the new restaurants is one run by Eataly, a popular Italian-food business, as well as a Greek taverna, a sports bar and grab-and-go counters.
An MSC favorite, the Raj Polo teahouse, will be swapped out for an adult-only comedy club, a nod to American culture.
MSC hasn’t received the best reviews for its entertainment, particularly among American cruisers accustomed to shows with a “wow” factor. According to MSC, one issue is catering to the many languages of its European passengers. The entertainment offered on World America will be adapted for an American audience.

There will be 19 cabin types, ranging from basic interior rooms to luxury suites within the MSC Yacht Club at the front of the ship. There are also options for balcony rooms, including ocean views and connecting family rooms.
Interior cabins for the new ship’s sevennight sailings will start at $689 per person, ocean views at $839 per person, and suites at $2,115 per person.
With such different service cultures in Europe and the United States, it could be a challenge for crew members to strike a balance on the World America. In Europe, service is typically more formal, with crew members less inclined to engage in chitchat, which can come across as cold and rude to an American.
“We are recruiting certain personality types and training our crew to be friendly, outgoing and conversational,” said Bernhard Stacher, the senior vice president of shipboard hospitality operations. “Good service is good service anywhere, across all our ships; it can just be a bit different when it comes to interactions.”
Environmental concerns
Following record demand for cruising in the wake of the pandemic, major cruise lines have been building larger ships, a trend that environmental groups say undermines the industry’s longterm sustainability goals.
MSC refutes those claims, saying that energy efficiency and sustainability are at the core of the company’s shipbuilding mission. The company says it has reduced its carbon footprint by nearly 40% between 2008 and 2023, and is on track to reach net zero greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050.
Indeed, the World Europa had the lowest carbon footprint of any large cruise ship at the time of its delivery in 2022, according to the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficient Design Index. MSC says World America is on track to perform even better, with more efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and improved hydrodynamic performance of its hull.

Americans gobble up more than 46 million turkeys on Thanksgiving, according to some estimates. But experts say that this love for the bird shouldn’t end when the holiday is over. Eating turkey regularly — whether it’s sliced in a deli sandwich or ground up in chili — can boost your health in more ways than one.
Here’s what makes turkey particularly good for you.
It’s high in protein.
Three ounces of skinless breast meat contains about 26 grams of protein. That’s nearly half of the recommended amount a 160-pound adult should eat in a day.
Protein is the body’s main building block, said Sander Kersten, director of the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University. As your body forms and repairs its cells, you’re constantly losing protein that needs replenishing with food.
People often associate protein with muscle mass, said Teresa Fung, a professor of nutrition at Simmons University and an adjunct nutrition professor at Harvard University. While it’s true that protein builds muscle, that’s only one of its roles.
Your immune system’s antibodies, which protect against harmful bacteria and viruses, are made of proteins, Fung said. So are the enzymes we use in digestion, along with the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar. Plus, “the heart is basically a
bag of proteins we use to pump blood,” she said.
Protein also helps you feel full after a meal, said Joan Salge Blake, a clinical professor of nutrition at Boston University.
It’s low in saturated fats.
Dietitians consider turkey to be a lean source of protein. Three ounces of skinless white turkey breast has just half a gram of cholesterol-raising saturated fats.
Even when you opt for dark meat (the fattier part of the bird) with the skin left on, you’re still only eating 2.5 grams of saturated fats. Dietary guidelines suggest eating fewer than 20 grams each day.
This gives turkey a nutritional leg up over other animal proteins like beef and lamb, said Luis Rustveld, an associate professor of family and community medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine. A 3-ounce ground beef patty, for example, has about 7.5 grams.
Excessive consumption of saturated fats can raise your LDL cholesterol, which can increase your risk for heart attack or stroke.
Its vitamin b12 supports nerves and blood cells.
The bird’s dark meat is high in vitamin B12, which is only found naturally in animal products. Vitamin B12 helps your body generate nerve cells, which in turn keeps your brain and memory sharp, Fung said.
You also need vitamin B12 to produce red blood cells, Kersten said.
Three ounces of dark meat with the skin on contains about 1.4 micrograms of vitamin B12, which is more than half of
what most adults need daily. But white, skinless meat contains less: not even half of a microgram.
It won’t make you drowsy.
Turkey famously contains an amino acid called tryptophan, which helps your body produce serotonin and melatonin, which regulate sleep-wake cycles. But the experts said there’s no evidence that turkey makes you sleepy.
The amount of tryptophan in turkey is too low to affect alertness, Rustveld said.
“This is a fairy tale people came up with to explain why they’re sleepy after eating turkey,” Kersten added. The more likely explanation is that people eat turkey as part of a large, heavy meal — often with alcohol — which can make them feel lethargic, he said
“You’re tired because you waited all year for a holiday, and then you sit on the couch and watch football,” Salge Blake said. “It’s not the tryptophan.”
What else to know
If you eat deli turkey (either presliced and packaged, or sliced at the counter), there are some health considerations to keep in mind. If the label contains ingredients you wouldn’t normally find in your kitchen, like modified cornstarch, carrageenan or caramel color, that usually means it’s an ultraprocessed food, said Kenny Mendoza, a postdoctoral researcher at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Eating processed meats regularly can raise your risk of colorectal cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
Sliced deli meats, including turkey, are also often high in sodium. To limit your sodium intake, Rustveld recommended choosing an oven-roasted variety over one that is cured or smoked.
Leftover Thanksgiving turkey will stay fresh in the refrigerator for three or four days. Frozen cooked turkey keeps well for up to six months.

Gouged into a barren stretch of pampa in southern Peru, the Nazca Lines are one of archaeology’s most perplexing mysteries. On the floor of the coastal desert, the shallow markings look like simple furrows. But from the air, hundreds of feet up, they morph into trapezoids, spirals and zigzags in some locations, and stylized hummingbirds and spiders in others. There is even a cat with the tail of a fish. Thousands of lines jump cliffs and traverse ravines without changing course; the longest is bullet-straight and extends for more than 15 miles.
The vast incisions were brought to the world’s attention in the mid-1920s by a Peruvian scientist who spotted them while hiking through the Nazca foothills. Over the next decade, commercial pilots passing over the region revealed the enormousness of the artwork, which is believed to haave been created from 200 B.C. to 700 A.D. by a civilization that predated the Inca.
In an undated image provided to the New York Times, a previously uncharted geoglyph made by the Nazca, a pre-Inca civilization in present-day Peru. With drones and A.I., researchers managed to double the number of mysterious geoglyphs in a matter of months. (via The New York Times)
“It took nearly a century to discover a total of 430 figurative geoglyphs,” said Masato Sakai, an archaeologist at Yamagata University in Japan who has studied the lines for 30 years.
Sakai is the lead author of a survey published in September in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that found 303 previously uncharted geoglyphs in only six months, almost doubling the number that had been mapped as of 2020. The researchers used artifi-
cial intelligence in tandem with low-flying drones that covered some 243 square miles. Their conclusions also provided insights into the symbols’ enigmatic purpose.
The newly found images — an average of 30 feet across — could have been detected in past flyovers if the pilots had known where to look. But the pampa is so immense that “finding the needle in the haystack becomes practically impossible without the help of automation,” said Marcus Freitag, an IBM physicist who collaborated on the project.
To identify the new geoglyphs, which are smaller than earlier examples, the investigators used an application capable of discerning the outlines from aerial photographs, no matter how faint. “The AI was able to eliminate 98% of the imagery,” Freitag said. “Human experts now only need to confirm or reject plausible candidates.”
That 2% flagged by AI amounted to 47,410 potential sites from the desert plain. Sakai’s team then pored over the high-resolution photos and narrowed the field to 1,309 candidates. “These were then categorized into three groups based on their potential, allowing us to predict their likelihood of being actual geoglyphs before visiting,” Sakai said.
Two years ago, the researchers started scouting the more promising locations by foot and with drones, ultimately “ground-truthing” 303 geoglyphs. Among the depictions were plants, people, snakes, monkeys, cats, parrots, llamas and a grisly tableau of a knife-wielding orca severing a human head. Of the new figures, 244 were suggested by the technology, while the other 59 were identified during the fieldwork unaided by AI.
The Nazca people carved the designs into the earth
by scraping back the pebbled, rust-colored surface to expose the yellow-gray subsoil. Little is known about the shadowy culture, which left no written record. Aside from the etchings, pretty much all that exists of the civilization are pieces of pottery and an ingenious, still functioning irrigation network.
The ancient geoglyphs have attracted theories that range from the religious (they were homages to powerful mountain and fertility gods) to the environmental (they were astronomical guides to predict infrequent rains in the nearby Andes) to the fantastical (they were landing strips and parking lots for alien spacecraft).
Sakai said that geoglyphs were drawn near pilgrimage routes to temples, which implies that they functioned as sacred spaces for community rituals, and could be considered planned, public architecture. The newly discovered geoglyphs are mainly located along a network of trails that wound
through the pampa. They were most likely made by individuals and small groups to share information about rites and animal husbandry.
Though the archaeological site is a restricted and protected area, the lines have been threatened by occasional vandalism. In 2014, Greenpeace activists left footprints near the colossal hummingbird geoglyph during a protest aimed at United Nations climate talks delegates in Lima. Four years later, three geoglyphs were damaged when a truck driver reportedly avoided a toll by plowing a rig through the sand.
Sakai said that markings in spots subject to flash floods and mudslides are particularly vulnerable. When those geoglyphs “are partially destroyed by flowing water, it becomes challenging to determine their original shapes,” he said.
Of the original 1,309 candidates, Sakai estimates that there are at least another 500 undetected figures.
“I expect that more surprising facts will emerge,” he said.

After months at the center of a debate over a transgender woman’s right to compete on a women’s team, San Jose State University lost its conference championship volleyball game Saturday, bringing a close to a roller-coaster season upended by an issue that has transcended sports.
On a court not far from the Las Vegas Strip, the Spartans fell to Colorado State University in the Mountain West Conference Tournament, failing to advance to next month’s NCAA Tournament, where the spotlight on the Spartans would have grown even brighter.
The Spartans lost to Colorado State, the tournament favorite, three sets to one. The team had reached the final without having played a single game in the tournament: It had a firstround bye, and then had been scheduled to play Boise State in the semifinal, but, for the third time this season, Boise State boycotted the game in protest over the Spartans’ transgender player.
That player — who had been on the team for three seasons without complaints, until this year — did not publicly speak after the game, and has not all season. The New York Times is not naming her because she has not publicly confirmed her identity. The university also has not confirmed whether the volleyball team has a transgender player, citing educational privacy laws.
Along with Boise State, four other teams this season forfeited matches against the Spartans because of the player, putting San Jose State front and center in one the most contentious issues in American life — one that brought people, both for and against the transgender player, to the Spartans’ games and uncommon attention to women’s college volleyball.
But the final Saturday went on peacefully. Fans cheered every player as she was introduced, and no one interrupted the game with a protest. And in the Spartans’ last game together — and the final college game for the seniors — the players acted as if the controversy did not exist.
Between points, they high-fived, directing and encouraging each other as the game progressed. After they lost they hugged each other. Some players climbed into the stands, which were sparsely filled with about 100 fans, to take photos with friends and family.
Todd Kress, the Spartans’ coach, said in an emailed statement that he was proud of his players for staying together through such a challenging season and that they “put their love for the game above all else to play as a team each and
every match.”
Jennifer and Brett Reeves, the parents of Spartans player Randilyn Reeves, said the season had been overwhelming for the athletes who just wanted to play volleyball, especially when they saw banners with “hateful words” at some games.
Brett Reeves called it “a little overblown” that some people claimed it was dangerous to have the transgender player on the team because she would hurt others with powerful shots. He said that “safety is an issue on any given night, any given day in practices or in games.” In the final, the transgender player did not lead the championship match in kills — shots that are not returnable and result in a point.
Jennifer Reeves said her daughter supported the transgender player “as a person, as a human being and as a teammate.” Still, Jennifer Reeves added that she doesn’t “necessarily agree with men in women’s sports. But because it’s legal for the NCAA, until that law has changed, our daughter just wants to play volleyball.”
Before one of the games this week, two women stood outside the arena protesting the inclusion of the transgender player. One held a sign that said “Protect women’s sports.” The other wore a red hat that said “Make Women Female Again” in the style of President-elect Donald Trump’s MAGA hats, and said that the issue of transgender women playing “shouldn’t be political. It shouldn’t be partisan.”
But on Saturday, there were no visible protesters outside the arena in the minutes before the final.
The Spartans’ loss Saturday ended the team’s turmoil for now. But the clash over the ability of transgender women to play on women’s teams is far from over.
Cases involving the question of transgender women’s rights in sports are being litigated in courts across the country, especially after 25 states barred transgender athletes from competing on teams consistent with their gender identity, according to the Movement Advancement Project, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group that tracks legislation. Some of those laws have been blocked while lawsuits against them make their way through the courts.
In recent years, courts mostly have sided with the transgender athletes and have upheld their eligibility to play. But more cases have popped up, including one in August, when a federal judge in Virginia temporarily stopped Hanover County Public Schools from barring a transgender middle school student from trying out for, and playing on, a girls’ team.
Another case was filed in March by a group of swimmers and athletes in other sports who sued the NCAA for discriminating against women by allowing transgender swimmer Lia Thomas to compete in the national championships in 2022.
Fans react during an NCAA women’s volleyball match between San Jose State University and Fresno State in San Francisco, on Nov. 18, 2024. The San Jose State women’s team, which has a transgender player, lost to the Mountain West Conference Tournament favorite Colorado State over the weekend, concluding a season that transcended sports. (Amy Osborne/The New York Times)
She felt that it was so unfair that this month, she and the Spartans’ assistant coach filed a lawsuit to oust the transgender woman from the Spartans’ team, saying that her inclusion violated Title IX rights for gender equity in federally funded institutions.
They and 10 other current and former volleyball players in the Mountain West Conference sued the conference, San Jose State’s head coach and others. It was Slusser’s hope that the player would be off the team in time for the tournament, so that teams would not forfeit games against the Spartans. Making the final without playing because of those forfeits would not have been fair to any of the teams, she said.
But a federal judge this week rejected their lawsuit, clearing the player to compete with her team. On Tuesday, another judge rejected the plaintiffs’ appeal.
Judge S. Kato Crews, an appointee of President Joe Biden to the U.S. District Court in Colorado, provided the first ruling, saying that legal precedents had established that transgender individuals were protected by Title IX and the 14th Amendment, so the player had a right to compete for San Jose State. The defendants did not dispute that the Spartans had a transgender athlete on their team, the lawsuit said.
And lawsuits involving transgender minors in Idaho and West Virginia could very well end up at the Supreme Court.
In an interview this month, Brooke Slusser, a captain of the Spartans’ team, said she felt betrayed by her transgender teammate and the university when a conservative website published an article in April about the player’s identity, surprising some of her teammates. She said she did not “think it’s fair that a man is allowed to play.”
Crews also wrote that the plaintiffs were not likely to win their case because they had asked for the judge to “rush to litigate these complex issues” when they had ample time to do so before the tournament, since the player had been on the team for several seasons.
Bill Bock, a lawyer for Slusser and the other plaintiffs, said Friday that the plaintiffs were proceeding with their lawsuit against the conference and San Jose State.
He said they were seeking damages for what they say is a failure to follow Title IX, the Equal Protection Clause and the First Amendment, and that they were asking the court to stop the defendants from “further implementing the policies that allow males to compete in women’s sports.”
