Consortium to build new power plant in San Juan
LNG-fueled operations expected to begin by 2028
By THE STAR STAFF
Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia, along with Puerto Rico Public-Private Partnerships Authority (P3A) Interim Executive Director Gerardo Lorán Butrón, announced on Sunday the selection of the company Energiza for the design, development, financing, construction, installation, operation and maintenance of a new power plant in San Juan that will provide 478 megawatts of energy.
The new plant will initially operate with liquefied natural gas, and will also have the capacity to operate with hydrogen in the future.
“This generating unit is an innovative and novel project, as it will be the first power plant capable of operating with hydrogen in Puerto Rico and one of the few in the world,” the governor said in a written statement. “The plant will use cutting-edge technology, which will allow it to operate with greater efficiency and reliability compared to the plants currently in service on the island. This transaction represents a historic step to stabilize Puerto Rico’s electrical system, since a large-scale private generating plant has not been built for more than 20 years.”
Pierluisi added that the project between the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA), as owner of the island’s generation, transmission and distribution assets, and Energiza “reaffirms my commitment to transforming the island’s electrical system to achieve the stability in energy service that our people deserve.”
cess under Law 120-2018 (Law to Transform the Puerto Rico Electric System) and Law 29-2009 (Public-Private Partnerships Law) and in accordance with the orders of the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB), which in turn were in accordance with the Integrated Resource Plan and Puerto Rico’s energy public policy.
During the bidding process, which lasted about 21 months, six companies were considered as qualified. The agreement, which is in the form of an energy purchase and operation contract signed between Energiza and PREPA, is valid for 30 years, with the possibility of two 10-year extensions each. The contract was approved by the boards of directors of the P3A, PREPA, the PREB and the Financial Oversight and Energy Board. The initial cost of the energy that the plant will inject into the electrical system is estimated at 11.6 cents per megawatt.
Lorán Butrón, the P3A interim executive director, said: “Once again, we were able to demonstrate that our processes are effective and suitable for transforming and modernizing Puerto Rico’s critical infrastructure.”
“Today we formalized a transaction that represents a key piece for the generation of energy in Puerto Rico, because it adds additional and advanced resources to address the generation insufficiency,” he added. “The selection of Energiza involved a rigorous study process to ensure that the project objectives are achieved and to continue to direct the island’s energy reliability.”
PREPA Executive Director Josué A. Colón Ortiz noted that the signing of the contract between the public corporation and Energiza contributes to the transformation of the energy system.
“This new plant will be much more efficient and clean than the units currently in service, some of which are more than 50 years old and face challenges in complying with federal environmental regulations,” the governor continued. “Once the new plant is operational, we will be in a position to decommission several of those outdated PREPA plants. At the same time, we continue to work steadily to integrate more than 2,000 megawatts of renewable energy into the system, through contracts already signed with various private operators that will install solar panels and industrial-scale batteries. In this way, we are on track to transform our energy system into a modern one that promotes the socioeconomic development of Puerto Rico.”
The start-up date of the new plant is expected to be June 30, 2028. Energiza is made up of the Puerto Rican companies Tropigas de Puerto Rico Inc. and Cratos Project Services PR LLC, and also has Mitsubishi Américas Power Inc. and NAES Corp. as part of its team. The consortium was selected through a competitive and transparent pro-
“This agreement reaffirms our commitment to maintaining the continuity of energy production in an efficient, economic and environmentally friendly manner …” he said.

SEC: Investment firm failed to prevent misuse of PR bonds data
By THE STAR STAFF
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has filed a complaint against investment adviser Silver Point Capital L.P. for failing to implement and enforce policies and procedures to prevent the misuse of material nonpublic information (MNPI) related to Puerto Rico bonds.
Silver Point Capital, in a separate statement, has denied any wrongdoing.
The allegations focus on Silver Point’s involvement in the restructuring of Puerto Rico’s defaulted municipal bonds and the firm’s purchase of over $260 million of these bonds while a consultant with access to MNPI had extensive communications with Silver Point’s trading desk, according to an SEC statement issued last week.
Silver Point’s core strategy involves investing in distressed companies, with a consultant participating in creditors’ committees on the firm’s behalf. The SEC alleges that Silver Point failed to address the specific risks associated with the consultant’s receipt of MNPI through his participation in the committees.
Specifically, from September 2019 to February 2020, the consultant sat on an ad hoc creditors’ committee for Puerto Rico’s bond restructuring and received MNPI from a confidential mediation. During this period, the consultant had more than 500 communications with Silver Point’s public trading desk without involving the firm’s compliance department.
According to the SEC, that created a

substantial risk that Silver Point may have misused information from the mediation in its trading of Puerto Rico bonds.
Sanjay Wadhwa, acting director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement, emphasized the importance of preventing the misuse of MNPI, stating that “the resulting risks to market integrity and investors are compounded when investment advisers fail to enforce their compliance policies and procedures.”
Silver Point said the SEC solely claims “that we should have required Chaim Fortgang, a preeminent bankruptcy lawyer who was a legal consultant to Silver
Point until his death three years ago, to be chaperoned by the Firm’s Compliance Department in his discussions with the Public Side of the Firm.”
“Importantly, after a four-year investigation, a review of approximately 350,000 documents and interviews of 10 current and former employees and Silver Point’s outside counsel, the SEC has not alleged that Mr. Fortgang improperly conveyed any information to the Firm’s Public Side or that Silver Point otherwise engaged in any type of improper activity or trading,” the firm said. “It has also not alleged any potential impact or harm to
“We have refused to settle a matter in which there was neither any wrongdoing nor any deficiency in our information barrier policies or our compliance program,” the firm continued. “Silver Point has, at all times, behaved legally and ethically. Silver Point takes great pride in our Firm’s compliance program and seeks to always operate with the highest ethical standards. In that spirit, we have maintained a positive, productive and collaborative relationship with the SEC for the past 22 years, and we have fully cooperated with the SEC’s investigation in this matter, even taking the extraordinary step of waiving attorney-client privilege over requested documents and information to successfully dispel any possible suggestion that we acted improperly. In addition, Silver Point has, since inception, consulted with numerous legal and compliance consulting firms on the design and operation of its information barrier and related governing policies and procedures.”
“All of the evidence -- including emails, legal confirmation letters from Mr. Fortgang to PricewaterhouseCoopers, and statements by 22 witnesses -- indicates that Mr. Fortgang acted for Silver Point solely as an attorney and therefore should have been treated no differently than any other outside counsel (where chaperoning, by all accounts, is not required),” Silver Point said. “In contrast, the SEC has not identified a single witness who contends that Mr. Fortgang functioned in any role other than as legal counsel.”
Dominican low-cost airline Arajet to expand to Puerto Rico
By THE STAR STAFF
Arajet, a low-cost airline operating out of the Dominican Republic, has unveiled plans to launch operations in the U.S. market, including Puerto Rico, by the second quarter of 2025, according to a Travel and Tour World report.
The expansion will establish connections to major U.S. cities, including New York and Miami, following the approval of new routes under the Open Skies agreement by the U.S.
Department of Transportation. Ticket sales should commence after the new routes receive final Federal Aviation Administration approval.
Arajet’s entry into the U.S. market aims to strengthen connections between the Dominican Republic and areas with substantial Dominican communities. While the specific New York airport has yet to be confirmed, industry experts speculate that flights will likely connect Punta Cana to either John F. Kennedy International Airport or Newark Liberty International Airport.
In Miami, flights are anticipated to operate from Miami International Airport, which has a significant presence in the Dominican American community. Arajet’s expansion will also include a new connection to Puerto Rico, bolstering the airline’s regional presence as a leading carrier in the Caribbean.
Arajet’s plans to operate U.S. routes have faced challenges since the airline’s inception in 2022. Chief Commercial and Strategy Officer Nacim Yala underscored the significance of the U.S. market for Dominican travel, noting that
approximately 60% of Dominican air traffic involves the United States. Yala compared the inability to access the U.S. market to a sprinter awaiting the start signal.
The activation of the Open Skies agreement last Friday has paved the way for Dominican carriers to compete freely in the U.S. market, eliminating previous growth restrictions. The development aligns with similar agreements the Dominican Republic has signed with Panama, Brazil and the Netherlands, promoting increased travel, trade and economic growth.
A Trump appointee could again delay Puerto Rico’s reconstruction
THE STAR STAFF
As Puerto Rico struggled to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017, a top Trump administration official, Russell Vought, used his position to slow down the release of billions of dollars in disaster aid to the island. Despite widespread power outages and thousands of displaced residents, Vought, who was then the Deputy Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), imposed additional hurdles that delayed the release of $16.5 billion in aid.
Now, Vought is set to return to the OMB as its director, pending Senate confirmation. In that role, he would have significant control over federal spending under the Trump administration, which has previously used disaster aid as a political bargaining chip, according to a Politico report.
The news has been met with concern by Puerto Rican activists and advocates, who fear that Vought’s return could mean further delays in the island’s recovery efforts. Erica
González Martínez, director of Power 4 Puerto Rico, called the situation a “worst-case scenario,” while Charlotte Gossett Navarro, chief director for Puerto Rico at the Hispanic Federation, expressed concern that the Trump administration’s negative view of Puerto Rico could lead to additional obstacles.
Vought has previously expressed support for expanding the president’s power to override Congress and federal agencies, leading some to worry that he may use his position at the OMB to block disaster aid in the future. A federal investigation and a former Trump White House official have confirmed Vought’s role in delaying aid to Puerto Rico, citing his concerns about corruption and fiscal mismanagement on the island. From 2018 to 2020, Vought slowed the release of $16.5 billion in disaster aid to Puerto Rico by setting up extra hurdles, according to those sources.
The hurdles caused $8.3 billion in aid to be delayed by 4½ months and a separate $8.2 billion allocation to be delayed six months.
The delays in aid have had a significant impact on Puer-
to Rico’s recovery efforts, and many fear that further delays could hinder the island’s ability to rebuild and recover from
Labor numbers for November show stable job market
By THE STAR STAFF
In November, Puerto Rico recorded a stable labor market with a 5.4% unemployment rate and a 45.4% unadjusted labor participation rate, marking the highest level since February 2009.
The positive trend reflects an increase in workers joining the island’s formal labor market.
The data comes from the island Department of Labor and Human Resources (DTRH by its initials in Spanish) and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Interim Labor Secretary Naihomy Álamo Rivera emphasized in a statement the importance of public policies in increasing labor participation and reaching new unemployment benchmarks.
In November, seasonally adjusted employment reached 1,149,000, showing an increase of 7,000 compared to October. Compared to November 2023, there was an increase of 3,000 workers. The non-seasonally adjusted data revealed agricultural employment at 17,000 people, while self-employment stood at 212,000 people.
Nonfarm wage employment, seasonally adjusted, was
FEMA funds help restore family entertainment spaces
By THE STAR STAFF
To have family entertainment spaces where people can enjoy safe places gatherings, especially during the holiday season, is part of Puerto Rico’s overall recovery. That is why the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) obligated $3.1 million to repair the Southern Coast Boardwalk in Juana Díaz, and the floating dock and gazebos in Ceiba.
“These recreational areas provide spaces for families to share,” Federal Disaster Recovery Coordinator José Baquero said. “They benefit their residents as well as all local and international visitors who enjoy their cultural and gastronomic offering, in addition to promoting the economy of the municipalities.”

Various industrial sectors showed employment increases, including professional and commercial services, trade, transportation and utilities, manufacturing, recreation and accommodation, mining, logging and construction, government, information and finance.

rector for the municipality of Juana Díaz, said the boardwalk located in the Camboya community has great tourist value, as well as merchants and fishermen who contribute directly to economic development. Besides having gastronomic alternatives, they also host musical and family events. The boardwalk was established in 2000 and welcomes up to 500 people during the weekends.
“This is one of our great contributions to the economy, culture and tourism,” Alvarado said. “As natives of Juana Díaz, this project was like a diamond for us. I remember the inauguration, when we got goosebumps because our coast is so important. This project marks an emphasis on our economic development.”
For the merchants, the repairs have meant receiving more customers, encouraged by how beautiful the facilities are now. That was confirmed by business owner Rubén Figueroa Ortiz. “This boardwalk repair has benefited us a lot, especially the businesses,” he said. Now we have a higher attendance. I am the oldest merchant here, with many years of service, and I feel very proud to have this opportunity right now.”

on Friday evening. The bill, which maintains the current level of government funding and also provides $100 billion in disaster relief for regions still recovering from storms and $10 billion in direct aid for farmers, punted the spending deadline to the early months of the Trump administration, when Republicans will control both chambers of Congress.
“This agreement represents a compromise, which means neither side got everything it wanted,” Biden said in a statement released after he signed the bill. “But it rejects the accelerated pathway to a tax cut for billionaires that Republicans sought, and it ensures the government can continue to operate at full capacity.”
Biden had been all but absent from the chaotic spending negotiations that gripped Washington for several days as the shutdown deadline loomed. (In a statement earlier in the week, Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, accused President-elect Donald Trump of ordering a shutdown and said: “A deal is a deal. Republicans should keep their word.”)
Two earlier versions of the bill that Biden signed had failed to make it to his desk. The first, a sprawling package attacked relentlessly Wednesday by Elon Musk on social media and eventually by Trump, didn’t even make it to the House floor for a vote. A more stripped-down version carrying a suspension of the debt limit, which Trump had demanded, failed to pass the House amid a rebellion by three dozen
fiscally conservative Republicans, who joined nearly all Democrats in voting it down Thursday night.
The spending fight demonstrated the limited grip that Trump has on the right-wing faction of the Republican Party that is adamantly opposed to taking on more debt.
“To take this bill, to take this bill yesterday, and congratulate yourself because it’s shorter in pages, but increases the debt by $5 trillion, is asinine,” Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, said in a scathing speech Thursday night, referring to the legislation that included the debt limit increase. “I’m absolutely sickened by a party that campaigns on fiscal responsibility and has the temerity to go forward to the American people and say you think this is fiscally responsible.”
But Trump appeared less concerned about taking on more debt than with avoiding responsibility for dealing with the debt ceiling, which was expected to be reached sometime in January.
“Increasing the debt ceiling is not great,” Trump said in a statement Wednesday, “but we’d rather do it on Biden’s watch.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Friday put a revised bill without the debt-ceiling provision to the vote, and it passed 336-34. One hundred and seventy Republicans voted in favor, joining all Democrats except one, who voted “present.”
Congress approves full Social Security benefits for public sector retirees
By MAYA C. MILLER
The Senate passed bipartisan legislation early Saturday that would give full Social Security benefits to a group of public sector retirees who currently receive them at a reduced level, sending the bill to President Joe Biden.
The vote to clear the measure was a lopsided 76-20, reflecting the broad popularity of an effort to allow approximately more than 2.8 million public pension recipients — some of them teachers, firefighters and police officers — to collect Social Security benefits at the same level as other beneficiaries.
The House passed the bill by a wide margin of 327-75 last month after a bipartisan group of lawmakers forced it to the floor, and President-elect Donald Trump recently threw his support behind it.
The rapid and resounding approval of the measure, which would cost nearly $196 billion over a decade, was notable at a time when Congress is in a protracted dispute over spending and debt, with Republicans promising huge cuts and members of both parties routinely lamenting the ballooning of the nation’s debt.
The bill eliminates two provisions set up decades ago to shore up Social Security’s solvency. Projections show the Social Security fund will run out of money in 2038 and, if no action is taken before then, beneficiaries would see a 27% cut in benefits. Passage of the measure speeds up that timeline by six months.
Twenty-seven Republicans joined Democrats in support.
The two provisions were designed to prevent what is known as “double dipping” on retirement benefits by certain public employees and their relatives.
It primarily affects two groups. One is public employees who receive pensions that are exempt from Social Security payroll taxes, but who also worked at least 10 years in jobs that required them to pay into the system. Such workers appear in the Social Security system as though they earned far less over their lifetimes than they actually did, and since the program pays out a higher proportion of low earners’ incomes as benefits, they receive a larger retirement benefit than they otherwise would. Another is people who receive public pensions but also become eligible for Social Security survivor benefits upon the death of a spouse or

family member.
Under the current law, both groups face a reduction in their benefits. The legislation on its way to enactment would allow them to receive the full amount.
“We have spent decades working to pass this legislation, and tonight is a victory for all the public servants who will finally get the Social Security they have earned,”
said Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who was a lead co-sponsor of the bill. The bill marked Brown’s final legislative achievement, after he lost a brutal and expensive reelection bid last month.
“Tonight, Congress ensured that police officers, firefighters, teachers and public servants across Ohio will be able to retire with the Social Security they spent their lives paying into,” he said.
Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, a lead sponsor of the measure, framed the issue as a “long overdue” matter of fairness affecting teachers, firefighters and police officers as well as some federal employees who were hired before 1984, when the federal pension system was brought under the Social Security system.
In a floor speech Wednesday, Collins cited one of her constituents, a retired female schoolteacher who had to return to work at age 72 after her husband’s death to make financial ends meet. The woman’s husband was a Navy veteran who paid into
bill could set off a chain reaction of unintended consequences by eliminating the two provisions.
“We all agree the status quo is unfair, and it penalizes millions of hardworking Americans,” said Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, an independent who railed against the federal debt. “But we also have an obligation to honor our promises to ensure that Social Security is going to be there for the people who have paid into it and have earned it, and also those generations who come after.”
Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., argued that a bill affecting the financial integrity of Social Security was too important to rush through at the end of the year without debate. The nearly $200 billion setback for the trust fund, he argued, would only make it more difficult to fix the longer-term issue of Social Security’s solvency.
Social Security for 40 years, but since she received a public pension from the school system, her surviving spousal benefits through Social Security were reduced by two-thirds.
“This is an unfair, inequitable penalty,” Collins said. Public sector workers who are currently being penalized, she said, “have earned these benefits.”
Public sector retirees and their allies on Capitol Hill in both parties have pressed for the measure for decades. It has sailed through Congress over the last several weeks, bypassing the usual committee process after proponents in the House collected 218 signatures on a so-called “discharge petition” to force it to the floor. Senate leaders also skipped committee consideration.
But it faced vocal pushback in the Senate from fiscal conservatives. Several senators, mostly Republicans, warned that the
“There’s so much riding on us getting this right and having the courage to fix Social Security over the next few years,” he said. Other Republicans said the legislation righted a wrong that should have been addressed a long time ago.
“I’m just glad we’re finally getting it done,” said Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., a close ally of Trump’s. “It should have been resolved years ago.”
Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said he had pushed the issue for 30 years in Congress and has repeatedly heard lawmakers promise, “We’ll fix it next year.”
“They never have,” Kennedy said in an interview Wednesday. “People are entitled to receive every penny that they earn, and the way the law works now, they’re not.”

‘A gift to everyone’: A Wisconsin community mourns a school shooting victim
By RACHEL NOSTRANT
Just last Sunday, Rubi Patricia Vergara was at a craft fair with her family to support her best friend, who was selling handmade necklaces and keychains. Rubi, who loved arts and crafts, bought the most expensive item, and then skipped around the fair with her friend, Josie Hughes. At the end of the day, the two girls hugged goodbye, saying they would see each other soon.
The next day, Rubi’s life was cut short. A shooter attacked her school, Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday, and Rubi, a 14-year-old freshman, and a staff member were killed at the scene, while six others were wounded. The shooter, a 15-year-old student, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.
On Saturday, family and friends gathered for a memorial service for Rubi at her family’s church. Speakers at the service remembered her as a kind, music-loving teenager with a strong faith in God.
“Rubi was, in every sense, a gift to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her,” said Abbey Staum, Josie’s mother. “She had an incredible ability to bring joy, humor and thoughtfulness to the people she cared for.”
The shooting took place on the last full week of classes before the holiday break. Emergency responders arrived within minutes of receiving a call from a secondgrade teacher inside the school. Officials identified Natalie Rupnow, who went by Samantha, as the shooter, and they said she used a handgun in the attack. Investigators are still looking for a clear motive.
Also killed in the attack was Erin M. West, 42, a staff member who lived in DeForest, Wisconsin. West had taught at Abundant Life for four years and was listed in the school directory as the coordinator for substitute teachers.
During Saturday’s memorial for Rubi, attendees cried, clapped and laughed while speakers addressed them from a stage adorned with Christmas decorations and a Nativity scene. Sharing heartfelt memories between singing Christian ballads, they lamented the attack while

celebrating Rubi’s life and devotion to God.
Rubi “had a faith beyond her years,” said Tom Flaherty, lead pastor of the congregation, City Church in Madison.
“Though Rubi has passed, her faith is still speaking to us,” he later added.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Andy Remus, Rubi’s uncle, said the family was mourning through laughter and joy. That is how her life should be celebrated, he said.
Dawn Moris, a family friend, and other speakers emphasized Rubi’s skills and interest in music. Rubi played the keyboard for the church’s family band, “sang like an angel” and had a smile to match, Moris said. She also recalled the time Rubi went to her first concert, “even though Rubi never liked loud noises,” during which a band member high-fived her as she watched from her father’s shoulders.
“It has been a true honor and a treasure,” Moris said. “I will never forget playing worship songs in the family band with Rubi.”
Rubi also loved cats, deep-dish pizza and books, especially Christian fantasy fiction, according to Flaherty. She was born in March 2010 and is survived in her immediate family by her parents, Vicente and Jennifer Vergara, and her younger brother, Adrian.
Her uncle added that the family holds no bitterness against the shooter or her family. “They lost a daughter too,” Remus said.
Among Rubi’s traits, perhaps the most highlighted Saturday, were her kindness and empathy. Moris spoke about how Rubi used to make origami and crocheted figurines of people she loved as gifts.
Fighting back tears, Staum recalled how her daughter and Rubi became friends.
The girls met 10 years ago at a camp, where Josie initially struggled with anxiety and refused to let her parents leave without her, Staum said. Josie’s parents tried every distraction they could think of to get her acclimated, but nothing worked — until Rubi approached her asking, “Do you want to play with me?” The girls were best friends from that day on.
“Rubi’s life, though brief, was a gift to us,” Staum said, adding, “Her story is unfinished because her love and light continue to ripple through everyone who knew her.”

Insurers are deserting homeowners as climate shocks worsen
By CHRISTOPHER FLAVELLE and MIRA ROJANASAKUL
The insurance crisis spreading across the United States arrived at Richard D. Zimmel’s door this month in the form of a letter.
Zimmel, who lives in the increasingly fire-prone hills outside Silver City, New Mexico, had done everything right. He trimmed the trees away from his house and covered his yard in gravel to stop flames rushing in from the forest near his property. In case that buffer zone failed, he sheathed his house in fire-resistant stucco and topped it with a noncombustible steel roof.
None of it mattered. His insurance company, Homesite Insurance, dumped him. “Property is located in a brushfire or wildfire area that no longer meets Homesite’s minimum standard for wildfire risk,” the letter read. (Homesite did not respond to a request for comment.)
Zimmel has company. Since 2018, more than 1.9 million home insurance contracts nationwide have been dropped — “nonrenewed,” in the parlance of the industry. In more than 200 counties, the nonrenewal rate has tripled or more, according to the findings of a congressional investigation released Wednesday.
As a warming planet delivers more wildfires, hurricanes and other threats, America’s once reliably boring home insurance market has become the place where climate shocks collide with everyday life.
The consequences could be profound. Without insurance, you can’t get a mortgage; without a mortgage, most Americans can’t buy a home. Communities that are deemed too dangerous to insure face the risk of falling property values, which means less tax revenue for schools, police and other basic services. As insurers pull back, they can destabilize the communities left behind, making their decisions a predictor of the disruption to come.
Now, for the first time, the scale of that pullback is becoming public. Last fall, the Senate Budget Committee demanded the country’s largest insurance companies provide the number of nonrenewals by county and year. The result is a map that tracks the climate crisis in a new way.
The American Property Casualty Insurance Association, a trade group, said information about nonrenewals was “unsuitable
for providing meaningful information about climate change impacts,” because the data doesn’t show why individual insurers made decisions. The group added that efforts to gather data from insurers “could have an anticompetitive effect on the market.”
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., the committee’s chair, said the new information was crucial. In an interview, he called the new data as good an indicator as any “for predicting the likelihood and timing of a significant, systemic economic crash,” as disruption in the insurance market spreads to property values.
The map of dropped policies shows how the crisis in the American home insurance market has spread beyond well-known problems in Florida and California. The jump in nonrenewals now extends along the Gulf Coast, through Alabama and Mississippi; up the Atlantic seaboard, through the Carolinas, Virginia and into southern New England; inland, to parts of the plains and Intermountain West; and even as far as Hawaii.
Silver City shows how the insurance crisis is a result of several factors over decades — and how hard it is to solve.
Founded as a mining town in the 1870s, the city of 10,000 nestles up against the foothills of the Gila National Forest, 3.3 million acres of alligator juniper, ponderosa pine and Gambel oak draped across softly
sloping mountains.
That forest has also become a firetrap.
Since its designation as a national forest in 1924, the U.S. government sought to protect the land by stopping forest fires. That policy failed to take into account that fires clear out vegetation, according to Adam Mendonca, the U.S. Forest Service’s Washington deputy director of fire and aviation, who lives in Silver City. The result was the buildup of decades of additional trees and brush, which means wildfires, when they do happen, now burn larger and hotter.
That threat has been exacerbated by climate change, which has brought higher temperatures and drier conditions. Wildfires are now more likely to break out any time of year.
It’s not just where people build homes that puts them at risk, experts said, but how those homes are constructed. Outside city limits, Grant County has no zoning or wildfire building restrictions, and no inspection program to ensure that newly built homes are safe, according to Roger Groves, the fire chief for the county, which includes Silver City.
Taken together, those challenges have caused insurers to pull back, according to Susan Sumrall, an insurance agent in Silver City.
After Zimmel got his nonrenewal let-
ter this month, he called State Farm, which declined to cover him. His insurance agent struck out with three more carriers, including Travelers. (State Farm and Travelers did not respond to requests for comment.) Finally, a smaller company agreed to insure his house, but his premiums jumped by onethird.
Zimmel’s bigger worry, he said, is how the struggle over insurance could affect his home’s value, which his real estate agent estimates at about $725,000.
“I just don’t know what’s going to happen to the town if this keeps happening,” said Zimmel’s agent, Shelley Scarborough.
Officials are trying to reduce wildfire risk. The county is looking at setting building standards to cut fire exposure, Groves said. State officials are also considering ways to get more homeowners to clear the vegetation from their property, possibly through a pilot project in nearby Lincoln County that would make those steps necessary to qualify for the state high-risk insurance pool.
And the U.S. Forest Service is trying to clear out decades’ worth of thick brush and other excess vegetation — what experts call “treating” the forest. That process is anything but simple.
In the parts of the forest nearest the city, workers have cut down smaller trees, low-hanging branches and scrub oak, then stacked them into piles to dry out. After a year or so, the piles are set on fire — ideally during the winter, to reduce the risk of the fire spreading.
After those two steps, the Forest Service can perform a prescribed burn — deliberately setting fire to a patch of the forest to further clear out the vegetation. To maintain that work, the process should typically be repeated every five to 10 years.
In coastal South Carolina, which now has some of the highest nonrenewal rates in the country, insurers have been going out of business, reducing their exposure or just leaving the area, said Jay Taylor, an insurance agent in Beaufort County, which includes Hilton Head, an area particularly exposed to sea-level rise, hurricanes and other climate threats.
Homeowners complain about the difficulty and cost of getting insurance, he said. But the desire to live by the ocean, despite the danger, remains the stronger force.
“They may cuss us out,” Taylor said. “But they never stop building.”

Tame US inflation boosts S&P 500, Nasdaq rallies above 20,000
Wall Street’s benchmark S&P 500 index rose on Wednesday and a rally in tech stocks lifted the Nasdaq above the 20,000-point milestone for the first time, after a U.S. inflation report boosted expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate cut.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped, dragged by health insurers as U.S. lawmakers introduced a bill seen as crimping their profits.
A Labor Department report showed U.S. consumer prices in November increased by the most in seven months, though broadly in line with market expectations.
According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 gained 49.21 points, or 0.82%, to end at 6,084.12 points, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 347.66 points, or 1.77%, to 20,034.90. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 94.48 points, or 0.21%, to 44,153.35.
“Nasdaq is rallying on the prospect of a rate cut next week and has room to move higher,” said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities.
Markets are pricing in more than a 96% chance the Fed will cut rates by 25 basis points next week, up from an 86% chance before the data, according to CME’s FedWatch Tool. Bets had risen following Friday’s employment report, which showed an uptick in unemployment alongside a surge in job growth.
A Nasdaq 100 inclusion could spur more gains for MicroStrategy, whose bitcoin holding was valued at about $42 billion, as more investment firms include the stock in their portfolios to accurately reflect the index composition.
For an entry into the index, a stock listed on the Nasdaq exchange must rank among the top 100 by market value, have a minimum daily trading volume of 200,000 shares and not be in the financial sector. The reshuffle announcement is due on Friday after market close.
The yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year notes rose 5.2 basis points to 4.267%.
“The equity market seems to be breathing a sigh of relief that this is another steady-as-she-goes report,” said Wasif Latif, chief investment officer at Sarmaya Partners in New Jersey. “There’s no surprises. It seems the equity market was braced for a higher than expected number.” Tesla shares climbed to a record high as the electric

From liberal icon to MAGA joke: The waning fortunes of Justin Trudeau
By MATINA STEVIS-GRIDNEFF
Justin Trudeau’s career is the stuff of 21st-century political drama, with an arc that has taken him from glamorous liberal standard-bearer to the butt of jokes by President-elect Donald Trump and his acolytes.
He burst onto the international scene in 2015, a newly elected young leader of Canada whose father had also once been a popular prime minister.
And he spent the next decade building a brand around being a feminist, an environmentalist, a refugee and Indigenous rights advocate, pursuing the same message of change and hope as Barack Obama.
While he drew fawning reviews in the news media — including over his poster boy looks — his honeymoon with Canadians really lasted only about two years; by 2017, a series of controversies had already tarnished his picture-perfect image.
His party went on to lose the popular vote in two elections, in 2019 and 2021, requiring him to form minority governments propped up by a left-wing opposition party. That support, too, has now evaporated.
Today, Trudeau finds himself — like other Western leaders — facing an angry constituency and losing control.
He will soon either call elections that he’ll most likely lose, or he’ll step down as leader of his party and as prime minister and let a different leader take the Liberals to the ballot box next year.
The prince
In Stephen Maher’s 2024 biography of Trudeau, the author recalls separate occasions in which Trudeau’s family members called him a “prince.”
“I’ve always known my whole life that this would be available to me if I want,” Maher quotes a young Trudeau as saying about entering politics.
When deciding where to start telling Trudeau’s political story, chroniclers have several choices.
There’s a 2012 charity boxing match that he, then a young member of Parliament, won against a tough Conservative who had black belt in karate. People still bring up the fight.
Or the moment in 2015 when he, as

prime minister, unveiled the country’s first gender-balanced Cabinet and — asked why this mattered — quipped, “Because it’s 2015.” Male leaders around the world were put on notice.
One might also look back to the eulogy he delivered in 2000 for his father, former Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, for an early glimpse of Justin Trudeau the politician.
“We have gathered from coast to coast to coast. From one ocean to another, united in our grief to say goodbye,” Trudeau, then 29, told a packed cathedral of mourners. “But this is not the end.”
Trudeau, who turns 53 on Christmas Day, was born while his father was in his first of four terms in office.
The elder Trudeau had swept Canada off its feet in the late 1960s, in what came to be called “Trudeau-mania.” Eventually, voters soured on him too, though he stayed in power for 16 years, and his legacy helped launch his son’s career.
“There was this nostalgia that was associated with the name that really worked for Justin,” said Darrell Bricker, a seasoned pollster and CEO of Ipsos Public Affairs.
“We were coming out of the time of tempestuous Canadian politics run by a lot of old men,” he added, “and even young men who just seemed old, so Jus-
tin was like a breath of fresh air.”
Liberal icon
The “Because it’s 2015” comment on his Cabinet’s gender parity catapulted Trudeau to global political renown.
Glossy magazines swooned; Vogue ranked him as one of 2015’s 10 “convention-defying hotties,” referring to him as a “Canadian politician-dreamboat.”
One former European leader from the Group of 7 industrialized democracies said early meetings with Trudeau were marked by people lining up to take selfies with him and treating him like some kind of rock star. The former leader asked not to be identified discussing past diplomatic meetings.
As the United States switched from the Obama to the Trump presidencies in 2016, Trudeau seemed to offer continuity with Obama’s politics. Few moments exemplified this more than Trudeau’s decision to offer refugees an open welcome in 2017 as Trump cracked down on immigrants.
Change all around
But starting in 2017, his political fortunes at home had already started fading.
As he headed to the polls in 2019, Trudeau was rocked by scandal, including a luxurious free vacation he took that he failed to declare and videos from the
1990s and 2001 that surfaced showing him dressing up in blackface.
It took a toll: He could secure only a minority government, leaving his party dependent on allies to pass legislation.
And then came the pandemic. Critics describe Trudeau’s push for restrictive measures as a key reason for the animus against him.
Within two years, in the middle of the pandemic, Trudeau called an early election, believing it might return him to a majority government; he was wrong. He ended up again commanding only a minority of representatives in the House of Commons.
By that point, the Western world’s center of political gravity was already shifting to the right over vaccine and restrictive mandates. In Canada, that set off protests in various parts of the country that came to be known as the Freedom Convoy, including weeks of demonstrations in Ottawa, Ontario, the capital, that paralyzed the city’s downtown.
A walk in the snow
Trump’s election victory in November has brought into focus Trudeau’s weakened position. Trump has threatened to impose blanket 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, which would devastate Canada economically. Trump has also been mocking Trudeau online, referring to him as a governor, and to Canada as the 51st state.
This time, a political brand that appears antithetical to Trump’s isn’t working for Trudeau. “He caught a wave on his way in, and when you catch a wave, it can lift you up,” Bricker said. “But on the other side, if you don’t get off, it will ground you.”
With elections required by October because of Canada’s electoral rules, Trudeau’s departure is increasingly seen as a foregone conclusion. The question is where this leaves his Liberal Party. The latest Ipsos poll, published Friday, found that the Liberals trail the Conservatives by 25 percentage points.
A growing chorus is asking Trudeau to “take a walk in the snow,” a phrase that became part of political lore after his father, in February 1984, facing calls to resign, took a long walk in the snow. When he came back, he had decided to resign.
Iran’s energy crisis hits ‘dire’ point as industries are forced to shut down
By FARNAZ FASSIHI and LEILY NIKOUNAZAR
Government offices in Iran are closed or operating at reduced hours.
Schools and colleges have moved to online only. Highways and shopping malls have descended into darkness, and industrial plants have been denied power, bringing manufacturing to a near halt.
Although Iran has one of the biggest supplies of natural gas and crude oil in the world, it is in a full-blown energy crisis that can be attributed to years of sanctions, mismanagement, aging infrastructure, wasteful consumption — and targeted attacks by Israel.
“We are facing very dire imbalances in gas, electricity, energy, water, money and environment,” said President Masoud Pezeshkian in a live televised address to the nation this month. “All of them are at a level that could turn into a crisis.”
While Iran has been struggling with issues with its infrastructure for years, the president warned that the problem had reached a critical point.
For most of the past week, the country was virtually shut down to save energy. As ordinary Iranians fumed and industrial leaders warned that the accompanying losses amounted to tens of billions of dollars, Pezeshkian could offer no solution other than to say he was sorry.
“We must apologize to the people that we are in a situation where they have to bear

the brunt,” Pezeshkian said. “God willing, next year we will try for this not to happen.”
Officials have said the deficit in the amount of gas the country needs to function amounts to about 350 million cubic meters a day, and as temperatures have plunged and demand has spiked, officials have had to resort to extreme measures to ration gas.
The government faced two stark choices. It either had to cut gas service to residential homes or shut down the supply to power plants that generated electricity.
It chose the latter, as turning gas off to residential units would come with serious safety hazards and would cut off the primary source of heat for most Iranians.
“The policy of the government is to prevent at all costs cutting gas and heat to homes,” Seyed Hamid Hosseini, a member of the Chamber of Commerce’s energy committee, said in telephone interview.
“They are scrambling to manage the crisis and contain the damage because this is like a powder keg that can explode and create unrest across the country.”
By Friday, 17 power plants had been completely taken offline and the rest were only partially operational.
Tavanir, the state power company, warned producers of everything from steel to glass to food products to medicine that they needed to brace for widespread power cuts that could last days or weeks. The news has sent both state-controlled and private industries into a tailspin.
Mehdi Bostanchi, the head of the country’s Coordination Council of Industries, a nationwide body that acts as a liaison between industries and the government, said in an interview from Tehran that the situation was catastrophic and unlike anything
in November, but that did not suffice. The power cuts now happen more randomly and last longer. For two days last week, schools, universities, banks and government offices were shut down with a day’s notice in all but three of Iran’s 31 provinces to save energy.
By Thursday, the government said all schools and higher education would move online, a measure not taken since the pandemic, for the remainder of the semester, which runs for about three more weeks. Then, on Friday, the governor of Tehran, the capital, said schools there would be open Saturday because of final exams.
Government offices will be working at reduced hours, ending work at 2 p.m. until further notice to reduce energy consumption.
industries had ever experienced.
He estimated that losses from just this past week could reduce manufacturing in Iran by at least 30% to 50% and amount to tens of billions of dollars. He said that while no enterprise had been spared, smaller and medium factories were hit the hardest.
A lesser-known factor has exacerbated the energy crisis this year: In February, Israel blew up two gas pipelines in Iran as part of its covert war with the country. As a result, the government quietly tapped into emergency gas reserves to avoid service disruption to millions of people, according to an official from the oil ministry and Hosseini, the member of the Chamber of Commerce’s energy committee.
Pezeshkian, elected president in July, has said that his government inherited a depleted energy store that it has not been able to replenish.
Natural gas accounts for about 70% of Iran’s sources of energy, a rate much higher than those in the United States and Europe, according to international energy studies. The government implemented an ambitious project of taking gas to all corners of Iran, including small villages, and now about 90% of Iranian homes rely on gas for heat and cooking.
Analysts attributed the current crisis to a host of problems, including an ailing infrastructure across the entire production and supply chain. Because of sanctions, Iran has found it difficult to attract foreign investments to expand and modernize its energy sector, analysts said. Mismanagement, corruption and cheap prices that fuel wasteful consumption are among other factors.
Iran began enforcing two-hour scheduled daily power cuts to residential homes
Ordinary Iranians are waking up every day not knowing if they will be able to go to work or send their children to school, or if the elevators or traffic lights will function.
“The power outage has severely affected daily life and work. When the power goes out, the water is also cut off and the boilers are turned off, and, as a result, all the heating devices are out of order,” said Sephideh, a 32-year-old teacher in Tehran, who said her online English classes are routinely canceled because internet goes out. She asked that only her first name be used, out of fear of retribution from authorities.
Nader, a dentist who also requested only to be identified by his first name, said he sometimes had to stop work on patients’ mouths midway because of power cuts. The owner of one of the largest manufacturing plants for construction material said in an interview from Tehran that his business had survived revolution, war and sanctions but that none of those things had been as chaotic and stressful as events of the past week. He said an overwhelming sense of uncertainty was spreading among the private sector, with the country slipping into uncharted territory with crisis after crisis that the government seemed unable to control.
Soheil, a 37-year-old engineer at a household appliance production factory in Isfahan, said the power cuts would force the factory to lay off workers and downsize because power cuts had led to higher production costs.
Pezeshkian has started a video campaign of officials and celebrities urging Iranians to reduce energy consumption by lowering the temperature of their homes at least 2 degrees. Videos on state media showed the presidential compound with no lights at night.
3-minute Christmas market rampage shakes Germany
By CHRISTOPHER F. SCHUETZE and MELISSA EDDY
It took an attacker just three minutes to kill five people and wound hundreds by ramming an SUV into a crowded holiday market Friday night, stunning Germany and shattering the peace of its Christmas season.
By about 7 p.m. Friday, the market, in the eastern city of Magdeburg, was packed with families and friends who had gathered under the glow of twinkling lights to celebrate the last workday before the holiday week.
Instead, the weekend began with horror. The attacker, described by officials as a 50-year-old Saudi doctor who had been living in Germany for nearly two decades, slowly maneuvered a rented car through a gap in the security barriers designed for emergency vehicles, then steered toward the heart of the celebration at the old market square.
He accelerated, trying to hurt as many people as possible, police said.
After maiming hundreds, he aimed to escape through a gap on the other end of the square but was stopped by traffic. Police officers swiftly surrounded the vehicle, forcing the driver to the ground as they apprehended him.
Among the five victims were a 9-yearold child and four adults. More than 200 others were wounded, 41 of them with injuries so severe that authorities have warned that the death toll could rise in the coming days. There were so many wounded that some had to be flown to hospitals in other states.
Local Magdeburg authorities, who spoke at a news conference Saturday in City Hall, identified the attacker only as Taleb A., in keeping with Germany’s privacy laws, and said his motive was being investigated.
The attacker, who officials said first came to Germany in 2006, is being held while authorities investigate him for five counts of murder and more than 200 counts of attempted murder.
Officials said the suspect lived in Bernburg, about 25 miles south of Magdeburg, and police searched an apartment in that town late Friday. A clinic confirmed to local news media that the doctor worked as a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy at their hospital, two German news outlets reported.
The doctor had an active social media presence that included posts criticizing Germany for what he called authorities’ tolerance of radical Islam, German news media reported. A security official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the

sensitivity of the matter, said that those reports were accurate.
In his social media, the man also expressed support for the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party and reposted comments by the group’s leaders warning of the threat of Islamic law being imposed in Germany.
Video from just after the attack showed a man with a trim beard and round, wirerimmed glasses lying prone on the ground beside a BMW with a crumpled front fender and grille as officers pointed pistols at him and shouted at him not to move.
Local officials said they believed that the driver acted alone.
But in Magdeburg and around the country, the attack smashed the peace and tranquility many had sought at a turbulent moment for Germany, which faces a grueling winter campaign for snap elections in February after the government’s collapse this month.
Henriette Winkler, 36, who had visited the market just hours before the attack, was one of many Magdeburg residents who had been looking forward to a quiet Christmas. “Now I almost don’t feel like Christmas anymore,” she said.
Germans had started the weekend eager to celebrate the start of the holiday season af-
ter a year marked by concerns over the stagnant economy, increasing job cuts and political paralysis that culminated in the chancellor losing a confidence vote in parliament.
“There is no place more peaceful and joyful than a Christmas market,” said Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who visited the market Saturday morning. “What a horrific act it is to hurt and kill so many people there with such brutality.”
Ronni Krug, a member of the Magdeburg City Council, defended the security at the market as sufficient, saying that the emergency routes exploited by the attacker were necessary to allow ambulances through and were guarded by police.
The security — which includes large concrete blocks and police officers — was beefed up this year in response to a knife attack last summer that left three people dead and a dozen wounded.
After that attack, at a street festival in western Germany, knives were banned at holiday markets across the country, and security was in-
creased for holiday festivals in Magdeburg and elsewhere.
In 2016, an Islamic extremist rammed a truck into a crowd at a Christmas market in central Berlin, killing 13. Since then, bollards blocking the entrances to street festivals and holiday markets in Germany have become standard, as have security cameras and an increased police presence, including plainclothes officers circulating among the crowds.
A line of large concrete blocks painted red and green had been placed at the perimeter of the Magdeburg Christmas market, which was set up in narrow streets holding wooden stalls decorated with twinkling lights and selling hot mulled wine, sausages and gifts.
After Friday’s attack, cities across Germany sent extra patrols to the thousands of Christmas markets that remained open Saturday. In Cologne, authorities banned suitcases and larger bags at the market around the city’s cathedral. In Leipzig, police set up extra barriers at the entrances to the market.
“We will need to speak about security, but not today,” Reiner Haseloff, the governor of Saxony-Anhalt state, told reporters Saturday. “Today we are mourning.”
Germany needs to have an “intense discussion” about what it would take to “give citizens the feeling that in Germany, we not only have secure Christmas markets, but that we are able to live our lives how we want to,” Haseloff said.
Magdeburg, which is the capital of Saxony-Anhalt and has a population of about 240,000, was part of Communist East Germany. The annual market is set up in the center of the city, in front of City Hall. On Saturday, people came to lay flowers at a memorial set up on the steps of the Johanniskirche, or St. John’s Church, near the attack site.
The pile of flowers at the steps of the church grew throughout the day Saturday as visibly shaken people stopped by to pay their respects and to mourn.
Religion has been in decline. This Christmas seems different.
By ROSS DOUTHAT
In March, I drove with my family up from Rome into the mountains of southeastern Umbria, to reach the town of Norcia and the monastery — now an abbey; it’s been promoted since our visit — of St. Benedict on the Mountain, a community of Benedictine monks perched above a wide valley that was then just greening with the spring.
The monks of Norcia are, as monks go, not obscure. They brew beer, they have a chant album, they were profiled in the Times in a story about their region’s recovery from the terrible 2016 earthquakes. They also feature prominently in Rod Dreher’s 2017 case for Christian retrenchment and renewal, “The Benedict Option” — for understandable reasons, since Norcia is the birthplace of Western monasticism, the home of St. Benedict, the place where medieval Christendom arguably got its start.
And it is a peculiarly resonant place to visit in this particular moment. Christianity in Europe, even in Catholic Italy, has been declining for generations, and now in the wake of deChristianization comes depopulation. The countryside around the monastery is emptying, with picturesque villas and ancient hill towns vacant — a process accelerated in Norcia by the toll of the earthquake, but part of a general phenomenon across an Italy that’s growing ever older and having ever fewer kids.
Yet here sits a thriving abbey with its youthful monks, drawing pilgrims while its Benedictines pray the ancient Latin of the Roman church. It’s not the fall of the Roman Empire all over again, but there is a strange rhyming quality, a similar sense of death and rebirth.
Every Christmas I try to write a column on religion, and over the years they’ve often circled themes of challenge, struggle and decline. In an essay this past week on the discovery of God, my colleague David Brooks jokes that “entering the church in 2013 was like investing in the stock market in 1929,” and something similar might be said about becoming a Catholic newspaper columnist 15 years ago:
Traditional religious institutions have been scandal-racked and fractured throughout my years at this paper — suffering through an early 21st-century ebb tide, if not quite a vast withdrawing roar.
This Christmas seems different. There is statistical evidence that the latest wave of secularization has reached some sort of limit. There is suggestive cultural evidence that secular liberalism has lost faith in itself, that many people miss not just religion’s moral vision but also its metaphysical horizons, that the arguments for religious belief might be getting a new hearing. Notre Dame de Paris has been rebuilt from its ashes. I rashly predicted a religious revival earlier this year, and at the very least I expect religious trends in the later 2020s to be different from the trends of the 2010s.
But different probably means really different, not just a return to what existed in the past. The last bastions of the before times, the old religious establishments, are likely to remain in existential trouble.
For instance, Catholic Poland, one of Europe’s last hubs of intense national religion, seems to be following the same de-Christianizing path as Ireland and Quebec and Italy. The American Protestant Mainline isn’t about to leap up from its sickbed, nor is an all but expired Anglicanism in Britain. Likewise, groups such as the Southern Baptists and the Mormons, fast growing a few decades ago and struggling today, aren’t going to automatically rebound or boom again.
Instead, any growth is likely to be nondenominational, subcultural (think Latin Mass Catholics or converts to Eastern Orthodoxy or communally oriented Protestants), mystical and sui generis, with notable flowerings in places where traditional faith has rarely grown before (like in the tech industry, say).
As part of my larger bet-on-America theory of the future, I expect any renewed religious vitality to spread from the United States back to the older Christendom of Europe. (The abbey in Norcia is a case study: Its founding Benedictines were a group of entrepreneurial Americans whose community has since added European brothers, as well.)
And I also expect a stringency that the old religious establishments in their dotage conspicuously lacked. On our first night above Norcia, we took our kids to Compline, the evening installment of the daily monastic cycle. The prayers took 20 minutes or so; it was lovely, we trooped off to dinner, and one of the monks suggested that I wake up and join them for the beginning of their daily cycle, Matins, which they were scheduled to pray at roughly 2:30 a.m. Sure, I can get up and pray for 20 minutes and then

collapse back into bed, I thought confidently.
So I set my alarm and rose and shuffled to the chapel in the wee hours …
… and almost two hours of Latin prayers later, I staggered back out into the starry Italian night, thankful to God for the experience, but also concerned that a real religious revival might not entirely be for me.
Merry Christmas.

One of the most unpredictable actresses of the ’70s is back from exile
By JASON BAILEY
Actress Jessica Harper was first profiled in The New York Times on Aug. 19, 1977. The occasion was the release of the Italian horror film “Suspiria,” and much was made of the fact that she had turned down a small role in Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall.” She explained, “I would have loved to do ‘Annie Hall’ but this was a big role and it meant going to Rome. I couldn’t pass it up, but I don’t know if it was a wise choice.”
And so, in a video conversation with Harper about her new film, “Nightbitch,” I had the rare opportunity to ask a 47-years-later follow-up question: Was it, in fact, a wise choice?
“More than wise, it was a brilliant choice,” she said with a laugh. “‘Suspiria’ turned out to be what I think is a gorgeous movie in its genre, and I’m really proud to be in it — and quite amazed, and yet not entirely surprised, by its long, long, longterm success.”
“Suspiria” was a game-changer for Harper twice — first in 1977, when it confirmed her as one of the most charismatic yet unpredictable actors of her generation, and then again in 2018, when Luca Guadagnino remade the film and offered Harper her first major role in a feature film in 16 years. “I felt really lucky to be able to have an opportunity to jump back in,” she said cheerfully, adding, “He’s such a wild, mad, creative person, and I love working with him.” But even more, she was eager to “go back to Italy and step back into bigger features than I had been focusing on for a long time.”
Those include “Nightbitch,” about a mother, played by Amy Adams, who finds herself growing feral as she copes with her decision to stay at home with her husband, who’s often absent. Adams, also a producer on the film, said Harper had “this great sort of grounded mysticism that I thought was really beautiful,” explaining that the veteran brought “a wisdom” to the film. She added, “The relationship became very clear when she got onto set. And I always love that, when you’re working with an actor, and you have it on the page, and you’re exploring what that relationship means.”
Harper’s hiatus from the big screen was mostly by choice, stepping out of the spotlight to get married and raise a family, though she took pains to keep her creative muscles in shape. “I wrote a dozen children’s books and created several albums of family music,” she said. “So I found other outlets for creativity.” But she would not have imagined that kind of selfimposed exile when she began acting in 1969, as part of the company of “Hair.”
She came from a big Midwestern family (detailed in her delightful and thoughtful memoir podcast, “Winnetka”), one of six children born to conservative parents. “You wouldn’t think that they would be the kind of people who would applaud their daughter when she got a role on Broadway, appearing naked in front of 700 people eight shows a week,” she said with a chuckle, “but it was actually my mother who suggested that I try out for that show” after seeing an article in the Times. She followed that up with an off-Broadway hit, “Dr. Selavy’s Magic Theater,” that drew rave reviews and theatergoers
The up-and-coming director was casting for his gonzo horror musical comedy “Phantom of the Paradise,” and he wanted Harper to audition for the role of the ingénue. Despite never having appeared in a film before, Harper won the part (over such competitors as Linda Ronstadt), and found herself thrust into a chaotic production. “They say, ‘Hit your marks,’” she recalled. “Then they say, ‘Look camera left.’ I’m going, ‘Whose left? Your left, or my left?’ I didn’t know anything.” She learned quickly. Her electrifying work in “Phantom” caught the eye of the Italian genre maestro Dario Argento, who of-
fered her the lead in “Suspiria.”
“I kind of loved it,” she confessed, “because, especially at that time in my life, I wasn’t really scared of anything. I was not risk averse, and so everything in life was a welcome adventure — particularly going to this strange city, and nobody on the crew, or very few, spoke English.”
So she learned some Italian, and “I remember at a certain point, just becoming entirely comfortable with what I was doing.” That confidence carried her through the next several years, as she continued to work with boundary-breaking directors in risky but rewarding projects.
But as the ’80s dawned, something changed for Harper, and it wasn’t just the studios (and the culture) becoming more conservative. After she co-starred with Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters in “Pennies From Heaven,” a downbeat Depression-era musical, and she recalled that after that film opened, “going home in a limousine by myself to my little house in Laurel Canyon, I thought, ‘You know, I need to populate my life a little better.’ I really got to that age where I wanted to zero in on making a family.”
In 1989, she married Tom Rothman, now the chair of Sony Pictures, and had two children pretty rapidly. “That changed life radically, obviously,” she said.
She didn’t stop acting altogether, “but it was more local stuff and television, and not as many features, which generally require that you travel to Yugoslavia or someplace.”
There were occasional showcase roles (“Safe” for Todd Haynes in 1995 was one; Steven Spielberg’s “Minority Report” in 2002 was another), “but for many years, I was, shall we say, struggling with the work-motherhood balance” — as Amy Adams’ character is in “Nightbitch.”
She wanted to be closer to her daughters and didn’t want to travel. However, she found ways to combine family and art, most notably by writing children’s books (some of which are illustrated by her sister, Lindsay Harper duPont.) “It just became a way to satisfy the creative drive while kind of involving my children in the process,” she said. Now that her girls are grown, she’s been able to indulge in a wider array of projects; she wrote, edited and narrated the “Winnetka” podcast, penned a cookbook and just completed a memoir prompted by the time she spent with her family during the COVID lockdown.
And now she’s acting again. After “Suspiria,” Guadagnino cast her in his follow-up film, “Bones and All.” Last year, she turned up in the indie drama “Memory”; she’s appeared in multiple episodes of the series “See,” “Fatal Attraction,” and “The Old Man.”
“I’m happy to say that more unusual movies have found me, and I have found them,” she said, adding, “I feel as though there’s always something groundbreaking and fun going on.” For “Nightbitch” — in which, in a nod to her life, she plays a children’s librarian — she was cast “the old-fashioned way: I auditioned, and lo and behold, they offered me a role. It was really quite straightforward.”
“I definitely would like to keep doing that, and hopefully some interesting roles will come my way,” Harper said. “I’m so excited to be on a roll. I’m having a really wonderful time.”

Oldest human genomes reveal how a small group burst out of Africa
By CARL ZIMMER
About 45,000 years ago, a tiny group of people — fewer than 1,000 — wandered the icy northern fringes of Europe. Across thousands of miles of tundra, they hunted woolly rhinoceros and other big game. Their skin was most likely dark. To keep warm in the bone-chilling temperatures, they probably wore the hides and furs of the animals they killed.
These hardy people of the ice age, known as the LRJ culture, left behind distinctive stone tools and their own remains in caves scattered across Europe. Earlier this month, researchers revealed the genomes of seven LRJ individuals from fossilized bones found in Germany and the Czech Republic — the oldest genetic specimens of modern humans yet found.
It turns out the LRJ people were part of the early human expansion from Africa to other parts of the world. But theirs was a surprisingly recent migration.
The common ancestors of the LRJ people and today’s non-Africans lived about 47,000 years ago. In contrast, studies of remains in Australia suggest that modern humans reached that continent 65,000 years ago. And in China, researchers have found what look like the bones of modern humans dating back 100,000 years.
The huge gap between those ages could change our understanding about how humans spread across the world. If the ancestors of today’s non-Africans didn’t sweep across other continents until 47,000 years ago, then those older sites must have been occupied by earlier waves of humans who died off
without passing down their DNA to the people now living in places such as China and Australia.
“They cannot be part of the genetic diversity that’s present outside Africa,” said Johannes Krause, a geneticist at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, and an author of the new study.
The newly discovered genomes come from fossils that have baffled scientists for decades. In 1950, archaeologists digging in a cave in what is now the Czech Republic found the skull of an ancient woman. They could not determine its age, however. They found stone tools at the site, known as Zlatý kun, but the tools were not distinctive enough to link the woman to any particular cultural group.
A few years ago, Max Planck researchers managed to extract some DNA from the skull. A preliminary analysis hinted that the woman belonged to an ancient branch of humans.
Meanwhile, another set of ancient bones arrived from a cave in Germany called Ranis, about 140 miles west of Zlatý kun.
The Ranis remains were discovered more than a century ago. Archaeologists had concluded that they had all belonged to a single ancient culture, which they called the LincombianRanisian-Jerzmanowician, or LRJ for short. But they did not know much more. It wasn’t clear if the LRJ people were mo -
dern humans or Neanderthals, for example.
In 2016, a team of archaeologists went back into Ranis for a fresh look. Marcel Weiss, an archaeologist at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany, and his colleagues uncovered a new batch of fossils and tools and used 21st-century methods to analyze them. The fossils yielded a wealth of DNA — enough to reconstruct the genomes of six individuals.
They were all closely related to one another, including a mother and her daughter. The scientists also discovered that two of them were closely related to the Zlatý kun woman.
“It’s the same group, the same extended family,” Krause said. “It could be that they knew each other.”
The researchers estimated that all seven sets of fossils were at least 45,000 years old. Their genomes are now bringing the LRJ people out of history’s shadow.
Their genetic similarity indicates that they belonged to a tiny population that only numbered a few hundred at any given time. And the close kinship between the six Ranis and single Zlatý kun individuals suggests that the LRJ people wandered in small bands over vast distances, spending little time in any one place.
“If I were to go to New York and just take one person from the Bronx and then go over to Long Island and take another person from there, it would be unlikely that these two have a common ancestor within the last three generations,” said Kay Prüfer, a paleogeneticist at Max Planck and co-author of the new study. “But, of course, we are talking about the deep past, when things were different.”
Prüfer and his colleagues found that the LRJ people lacked some key mutations found in living Europeans. They did not have the genes that produce pale skin, for example, which suggests that they had dark pigmentation, as their ancestors who emerged from Africa did.
The scientists also used the genomes to figure out where the LRJ people fit on the human family tree. Previous studies had established that human ancestors evolved for millions of years in Africa. About 600,000 years ago, the ancestors of Neanderthals split off on their own. They spread through the Middle East and established themselves across Europe and western Asia. Neanderthals endured for hundreds of thousands of years, disappearing from the fossil record about 40,000 years ago.
Modern humans remained longer in Africa before expanding to other continents. When they met Neanderthals, possibly in the Middle East, they interbred. Today, all humans around the world carry at least a trace of Neanderthal DNA.
Although the broad outlines of this history are well established, scientists are still struggling to pin down the specifics. Estimates of when modern humans and Neanderthals first interbred have ranged from 54,000 years ago to 41,000 years ago, for example.
Krause and his colleagues discovered that, unlike living humans, the LRJ people had long stretches of Neanderthal DNA in their genomes. This suggests that relatively little time had passed since modern humans interbred with Neanderthals. Krause and his colleagues estimate that the interbreeding took place 1,000 to 2,500 years beforehand, or about 46,000 years ago.
In another study published Thursday, a second team of scientists reached a similar conclusion by surveying Neanderthal DNA in fossils and in living people.

500-year-old walls and a haunting past: Exploring the haciendas of Central Mexico
By FREDA MOON
Igroped my way through the darkness toward the only window in the room, a half-moonshaped gap in the thick stone walls. The opening to the dawn light outside was barred — a remnant of the dangerous days of Hernán Cortés’ conquest of the Central Mexican highlands in the early 16th century — and screened to protect against more mundane invaders: insects. Had the space, with three big beds in two cavernous rooms, not rivaled the square-footage of some of my former apartments, I might have felt claustrophobic. Instead, I was giddy.
Those 500-year-old walls, a two-hour drive south of Mexico City, insulated us not only from the sweltering July heat, but also from raucous roosters and barking dogs. So when I woke at 5 a.m., it wasn’t because I couldn’t sleep, but because I was excited to see the hotel, Hacienda Vista Hermosa, founded in 1528, in the early morning light.
I fell for Mexico’s haciendas years ago while road-tripping through the country’s interior. Most of the once-grand estates were, at that point, in ruins. Their stone walls, arched gates and aqueducts stood tall above maize stalks and ranch land, but their adobe walls were crumbling, their grounds overgrown, their talavera tiles faded.
Many of these haciendas were seized or destroyed during the Mexican Revolution in
1910, which sought the dismantlement of the plantation-like system in which native Mexicans endured inhumane work conditions. With the agrarian reforms that followed, the haciendas’ farmlands were redistributed and their palatial houses abandoned. In the decades following the revolution, some of these properties, including the Vista Hermosa, began to be reimagined as tourist destinations, but many weren’t restored until later, with a boom in the 1990s and 2000s.
Last summer, when I was planning a trip to the rural highlands around Mexico City with
kends seeking them out. Here’s what we found. Fountains, statues and massive walls
Hacienda Vista Hermosa was our first stay. When we arrived at its massive, guarded gate outside the lakeside town of Anenecuilco, less than an hour south of Cuernavaca, the capital of Morelos, we were waved through formidable stone walls to a cobblestone lane lined with palms and towering cactuses.
Our kids, Roxie, 9, and Felix, 5, raced for the pool, returning breathless, unable to find the words to describe what they had seen. Built around an arched stone aqueduct, the huge pool was surrounded by statues, fountains and fuchsia bougainvillea. Elsewhere, a pool this elegant would belong to a luxury hotel, where children are shushed. Here, the hacienda’s 100 rooms started around 1,400 pesos (about $70) and there were kids everywhere, water guns in hand, playing amid the centuries-old stonework.
Horseback-riding at Hacienda San Gabriel de las Palmas, a 20-room resort in Morelos, Mexico, Oct. 8, 2024. Within a few hours’ drive of Mexico City, centuries-old estates have become restaurants, museums, hotels and even water parks. (Amir Hamja/The New York Times)
my husband, Tim, and our two children, I cluttered a Google map with pinned locations for haciendas that had become atmospheric restaurants, intriguing museums, distinctive hotels and even water parks. All were within about three hours from the capital.
Finding them wasn’t hard: The state of Morelos, where we spent much of our time, is marketed by the local government as the Hacienda Route. And the Ex-Hacienda Owners Association keeps an extensive list of the 2,500 or so former haciendas — in varying states of repair — across the country. We spent our wee-
The next morning we left our room with its half-moon window and walked the grounds. There were great lawns edged by vine-draped ceiba trees, stables, a working farm with fowl, a cavelike chapel filled with worshippers, a former bullfighting arena and retired horse-drawn carriages. Every corner held a glimpse into Mexico’s history. Showy restaurants, water parks and museums
Most haciendas operate mainly as hotels, but nearly all have restaurants and other lures, including spas, golf courses, horseback rides and even hot air balloons, as well as museums devoted to regional tradition, like the Pulque Museum at Hacienda Soltepec in Tlaxcala. At many, staying overnight is not a necessity.
In a Cuernavaca suburb, we dropped in for the popular brunch — crepes in a poblano chile sauce, fluffy pancakes, fresh fruit — at La Distral, the restaurant at Hacienda San Antonio el Puente (515 pesos for adults, 205 pesos for children). There, the aqueduct was repurposed as a wall dividing sections of the expansive patio dining room, and the indoor-outdoor space was covered by an industrial-metal, barn-style roof with ivy dangling like a waterfall. In front was a long pond, lush garden and geyser-like fountain.
One feature at nearly all of these defunct agricultural powerhouses was water: Water flowing through canals, water gushing through tunnels, water splashing from aqueducts. Water was among the hacienda’s most potent assets, providing not only irrigation, but also power via
water wheels and steam. Today, this rushing water is an atmospheric backdrop and white noise machine.
Sometimes water becomes the reborn hacienda’s raison d’être. After brunch, we went to the nearby Ex Hacienda de Temixco Parque Acuático, a water park with looping, primarycolored waterslides, paletas and a snaking body of water where tube-bound families shrieked as they bounced off one another. Even amid this glorious kitsch, there were stone courtyards carved with religious reliefs.
At Hotel & Spa Hacienda de Cortes, we splurged on a meal on the patio of the romantic dining room, where stone walls were veined with vines, a tree grew toward the ceiling and tables were covered in linen and elaborate settings. We ordered an extraordinary Caesar salad, showily prepared table-side, and Mexico’s national dish, chiles en nogada. Other dishes included quail prepared from an 1853 recipe (500 pesos) and suckling pig in a banana leaf (320 pesos).
In general, though, the food at the haciendas was less thrilling than the surroundings. My favorite hacienda restaurant, for atmosphere alone, is on the southern edge of Mexico City, at Antigua Hacienda de Tlalpan. There, in a dining room lined with antiques-filled cabinets, suited waiters serve classic dishes like mole poblano (340 pesos) and pato en pipián (duck in a sauce of pumpkin seeds and spices, 460 pesos) beneath a stained-glass ceiling, and crooning musicians compete with fountains and screaming peacocks.
Swaying chandeliers and a horse named Ohio I hadn’t planned an overnight stay at Hacienda San Gabriel de las Palmas, a 20-room
hotel in Amacuzac, deep in the Morelos countryside. But one day Tim suggested I have a night to myself. I jumped on it, and booked a massage and horseback ride.
Once among the largest sugar-producing haciendas in the country, Las Palmas is exclusive and doesn’t allow non-guests to visit its restaurant or grounds without a reservation. (Rooms — mine had high ceilings with stone arches, religious art and a whirlpool bath — start at 4,440 pesos per night, and suites cost upward of 20,893 pesos per weekend.)
It’s the kind of place where the staff, dressed in tan slacks and pale blue guayaberas, greet you by name. Everywhere I went, I heard “Good morning, Señorita Moon.”
At dinner, the wind whooshed through the open-air dining room with its tall-backed wicker chairs and swaying chandeliers, blowing out the candles. Thick drops splashed into the glowing blue pool with a swim-up bar — an
oddly 1990s-esque addition to this nearly halfmillennium-old estate — and trees threw off tiny white, star-shaped flowers that fell like snow.
Later, the ceiling of my luxurious room sprung a leak, and I was whisked into the main building while the staff hurriedly rearranged the room to prevent water from falling directly onto my king-size bed. The detour gave me a chance to stand alone in one of the hacienda’s galleries, where the house’s colonial antiques and artwork were displayed in the near-dark as a thunderstorm crashed outside. The next morning, when I arrived for a 9 a.m. trail ride with Gerardo Flores, a distinguished caballero, or horseman, who has worked at the hacienda for a quartercentury, the sky was cloudless.
Flores asked if I knew how to ride.
“I have,” I said as I clumsily pulled myself onto my horse, named Ohio. We set off along the estate’s cobblestone thoroughfare, outside its walls, through the village that grew up around them and into the countryside.
In my inadequate Spanish, we discussed our families and my reddish-brown horse, who had a mischievous streak. Ohio was easily spooked when his hooves sank into the poststorm mud, and was inclined to graze whenever he felt like it. Flores gently admonished me to hold the reins more firmly, with one hand. And to use my feet and legs con confianza — with confidence — to show Ohio who was in control.
‘Remarkable beauty, born from darkness’
By the time we reached Hacienda Santa Barbara, we had spent hours navigating back roads as cumulus clouds sprouted like mushrooms above the electric green Tlaxcala landscape. Soon, the foothills of La Malinche, an inactive volcano an hour north of Puebla, were a blur behind windshield wipers.
Unlike San Gabriel, which embraces ex-
clusivity, Santa Barbara is a creative and political reimagining of a traditional hacienda. Instead of a museum of colonial-era antiques, the gallery displays the work of Malena Díaz, a Tlaxcalan artist and photographer, whose work depicts queer lucha libre performer-fighters and farmers who produce the region’s celebrated, sacred maize.
Instead of a pool, the hacienda has a temescal, or traditional sweat lodge. The exceptional homestyle meals — both breakfast and dinner, served in a dark, chandelier-lit, nearly silent dining room — were included in the room cost (not quite 3,000 pesos).
Our room, accented with folk art, had a high ceiling of wooden beams and clay tile. The bathroom had skylights, a pressed aluminum mirror and a spa tub, though not enough hot water to fill it (a situation remedied by bucket after bucket from the kitchen, where it was boiled in batches).
In the morning, once again awake at dawn, the kids ran, zigzagging through maguey, sage and corn. We visited horses in a crumbling corner, where the stone walls created makeshift corrals, and climbed the rickety wooden spiral staircase of the disused chapel. It was the highest point for who-knows-how-far in all directions. We stood just above the treetops, looking into the distance, but when we turned our focus closer, we noticed that leaf after leaf, ledge after ledge, was lined with bright green caterpillars. On our way back down, through the darkness of the stairwell, we spotted cocoons. First one and then another and then too many to count. The hacienda’s chapel, it seemed, had become a butterfly breeding ground. It was a poignant illustration of what had drawn me to haciendas in the first place: Remarkable beauty, born from darkness, the capacity for a place to transform itself, again and again.

Rickey Henderson, baseball’s flamboyant ‘man of steal,’ dies at 65
By MICHAEL S. ROSENWALD
Rickey Henderson, the thrilling and charismatic Hall of Fame outfielder who, with his signature crouched stance, blazing speed and unlikely home run power, was widely regarded as the greatest leadoff hitter in Major League Baseball history, died Friday. He was 65.
His death was announced by his family. They did not cite a cause or say where he died, but they thanked the staff at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.
Often called “the man of steal” by sports writers, Henderson holds the career record for stolen bases with 1,406 — a mark unlikely to be swiped from him anytime soon, or perhaps ever. He stole more than 100 bases in three seasons, and his 130 in 1982 is the single-season record.
Henderson also owns the record for runs scored, with 2,295. Eighty-one of those runs were the result of leadoff home runs — another record. His 2,190 walks rank him second behind Barry Bonds.
“Without exaggerating one inch, you could find 50 Hall of Famers who, all taken together, don’t own as many records, and as many important records, as Rickey Henderson,” baseball statistician and historian Bill James once wrote.
Henderson played for nine teams over 25 seasons, but he spent most of his career with his hometown Oakland A’s (on four separate occasions) and the New York Yankees.
In addition to being one of baseball’s most exciting players, Henderson was legendarily eccentric.
He was unaware of many of his teammates’ names. During the 1993 season, he missed three games in August with frostbite after falling asleep with an ice pack on his injured foot. He framed a $1 million bonus check instead of cashing it.
Though he was frequently accused of being self-centered, Henderson wasn’t strictly an “I” kind of player. He often referred to him-
derson told Sports Illustrated in 2009, just before he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. “That’s when I decided I had to elevate my game and do something different. I decided to develop the physique.”
Henderson hit a total of only 35 homers through his first five seasons, but he hit 91 during the next five, including a career-high 28 in 1986 for the Yankees after he was traded in 1984.
Rickey Nelson Henley was born in Chicago in the back seat of his family’s Oldsmobile on Christmas morning in 1958.
When Rickey was 2, his parents, John and Bobbie Henley, broke up. His mother moved with Rickey and his siblings to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where she had grown up.
self in the third person; he once said, “Rickey don’t like it when Rickey can’t find Rickey’s limo.”
Another time, while Henderson was playing with Oakland, catcher Terry Steinbach found him in the locker room stark naked and mumbling, “Rickey’s gonna have a game” five minutes before the game.
“I’m pretty sure the anthem is playing,” Steinbach recalled in Howard Bryant’s 2022 biography, “Rickey: The Life and Legend of an American Original.” “He’s still in the locker room, talking to himself, ‘Rickey’s gonna have a good day.’”
About 30 seconds before the first pitch, Henderson put on his uniform and announced, “Rickey’s ready to go!”
“He walks down the tunnel,” Steinbach said. “Gets his bat. Hits a home run.”
At 5-foot-10, Henderson was smaller than many big leaguers, but he overcame his size with a combination of horsepower, a savantlike ability to exploit deficiencies in pitchers, and an extreme bravado that many players viewed as cockiness.
Once, playing against the Baltimore Orioles, he stood on first base and seemed to flash the peace sign — two fingers — to the third baseman, Floyd Rayford.
cause it wasn’t a peace sign — Rickey was holding up the number two. And two pitches later, he was standing on third with Rayford after having stolen two bases.”
Drafted by the A’s in the fourth round in 1976, Henderson showed his potential almost immediately in the minor leagues. One of his coaches thought that he could defy physics by outrunning the baseball.
“He’d only been in the minors for a halfhour,” Bryant wrote in his biography, “but there was immediately something about Rickey’s style that embarrassed even professional players.”
His crouched batting stance shrank his already small strike zone. (Los Angeles Times sports writer Jim Murray would later write that “Henderson has a strike zone the size of Hitler’s heart.”)
“The guy is impossible to pitch to,” Frank Quintero, who pitched against Henderson in the minor leagues, once recalled. “His strike zone is about 10 inches deep. He drives me crazy, and the umpires, too. And when you do come in with a strike — boom, he rips it.”
Not long after, she moved to California to find work, leaving her children behind with her mother. In California, she married Paul Henderson, and the new family eventually settled together in Oakland.
As a teenager, Rickey was primarily interested in football.
Though he played baseball in youth leagues, he didn’t consider playing in high school until his sophomore year, when his guidance counselor called him into her office. The baseball team was short on players and needed him, she said. No way, he told her.
“She offered me a quarter,” he told Bryant. “Hits, runs, stolen bases — a quarter each. I said, ‘I’m about to make me some money.’” He joined the team. In one game, he earned a whopping $5.25.
Henderson continued playing football each fall, but eventually his speed and linedrive-hitting ability drew the attention of professional baseball scouts, notably J.J. Guinn, who worked for the A’s.
Still, Henderson wasn’t set on baseball; he wanted to play Division I football. But his mother, worried about injuries, pushed him to choose baseball. Interviewed for Bryant’s biography, Guinn recalled asking him what he wanted to accomplish.
“I want to be the greatest base stealer of all time,” Henderson said.
“Rayford didn’t know what he meant,” sports writer Joe Posnanski wrote in “The Baseball 100,” in which he ranked Henderson the 24thgreatest player ever. “That’s be-
Oakland called up Henderson about halfway through the 1979 season. The A’s were terrible, but Henderson hit .274 and led the team in stolen bases with 33. The next year, the A’s hired Billy Martin as manager, and the team improved. So did Henderson: He hit .303, walked 117 times, stole 100 bases and played in the first of 10 All-Star games during his career.
Henderson was a line-drive hitter early in his career, but he decided to start hitting for power after contract negotiations with the A’s after the 1982 season.
“I stole 130 bases and went to arbitration, and they said that the only guy who earned the salary was a guy that hit home runs,” Hen-
On May 1, 1991, while playing for the A’s, Henderson stole third against the Yankees. It was his 939th stolen base, surpassing Lou Brock’s record.
There was a celebration on the field. Speaking to the crowd on a microphone, Henderson said: “Lou Brock was the symbol of great base stealing. But today, I am the greatest of all time.”
Survivors include his wife, Pamela. Complete information on survivors was not immediately available.

Aries (Mar 21-April 20)
This isn’t a day to make firm commitments, Aries, especially concerning relationships. Today’s atmosphere highlights unification and reconciliation, but don’t take this as a sign that you’re now bound for life. Proceed carefully before making any long-term decisions. If you’re about to take a big step at work or in your personal life, try to delay your decision until your thoughts are clearer.
