Fajardo mayor laments death of 7-year-old struck and killed while playing in yard on Christmas Day

Fajardo Mayor José Aníbal “Joey” Meléndez Méndez expressed his solidarity with the family of a 7-year-old boy who was run over and killed on Wednesday while he was outside a residence on Medusa Street in the Las Croabas neighborhood of the northeastern coastal municipality’s La Roca sector.

The mayor described the incident as regrettable and made himself available to the family for any help the municipality could provide them in this challenging moment.

“The people of Fajardo and all of Puerto Rico are in mourning, with the sad and lamentable departure of Diego José Aponte, the seven-year-old boy who lost his life [Wednesday], and in a very sad incident, and at this moment I can only ask for a lot of strength from […] God, to have that family in our prayers, which I know are those of Fajardo and of all of Puerto Rico,” Meléndez said. “I tell you it is a regrettable incident; there are no words to describe it.”

“But in this moment of intense sadness, I tell you that love, that the memories of that child fill the hearts of that family, are my most sincere wishes, my words of strength for them, and I hope at some point in the day, together with the emergency management personnel and the municipal police, to stop by, visit them, put at their disposal, all our work team, psychological help that we have, social workers, pastors,” the

mayor continued. “It is sad, I tell you, this is about them, it is their family that is suffering, it is that child, but to see it as an incident close to them and to that family, two days ago, his grandfather, Diego José’s grandfather, who works in a public housing project in Fajardo, with the housing administrators who work and who administer that housing project, and we were at a toy distribution, on December 23, and he was helping us in the line with the other children.”

“I tell you, the things that go through one’s mind now, like this very sad news, that I even imagined, playing with those toys that we sent them, and that happens now,” Meléndez said.

On Christmas Day, a driver reported as being in his 80s lost control of his car and hit the child while he was in the yard of a residence.

The child was taken to a hospital, where the doctor on duty certified his death. The driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating with authorities, the police said.

The boy’s mother, in tears, recounted the distressing moments.

“We were at a relative’s house, cleaning up the yard, and Santa Claus brought him one of those yard blowers,” the young woman said. “When I told him: ‘Diego, I’ll be right back,’ I went out and saw [an SUV] coming up, it seemed like it was going to visit the people who were there too. But instead of braking, it accelerated, and Diego was stuck between a Tacoma and the car. Everyone tried to get him out quickly … we were able to get him out, I gave him CPR, but he couldn’t hold on.”

Agents from the Fajardo Region Highway Patrol Division, along with the prosecutor on duty, on Thursday were investigating the events to determine the complete circumstances of the accident.

Man struck and killed on Christmas night in Canóvanas

Also on Wednesday, a man died after being run over at about 11:45 p.m. on highway PR-3 in front of the Villas de Loíza urbanization in Canóvanas.

According to the police report, a call was received through the 9-1-1 Emergency System about a collision involving a vehicle. The driver of a gray 2012 Toyota Corolla was traveling in the direction of Río Grande from Canóvanas when, upon reaching the entrance of the development, he hit Edwin Meléndez Santana, 66 years old, a resident of Río Grande.

Meléndez Santana died at the scene. The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and was given an alcohol test with a negative result.

Personnel from the Carolina Region Highway Patrol Division were investigating the incident on Thursday.

Likewise, Luis Muñoz Rivera Avenue will be closed at the intersection of Rev. Gerardo Dávila, diverting traffic to Avenida Constitución and Paseo Covadonga. At 4 p.m., the Field Operations Superintendency will extend Avenida Constitución’s closure at the height of Plaza Colón, diverting traffic to the Tapia Theater. Luis Muñoz Rivera Avenue will also be closed at the Esteves (Guardia Nacional) intersection. Police will divert traffic to Avenida Constitución.

On Thursday, Jan. 2, starting at 4 a.m., Highway Patrol will close Luis Muñoz Rivera Avenue at Paseo Caribe, diverting traffic to Manuel Fernández Juncos Avenue. In addition, Fortaleza Street will be closed, diverting traffic to Tetuán Street. Cross-street closures will be made from San Francisco Street to Fortaleza Street.

Motorized personnel will be in charge of local traffic on Paseo Caribe and the Caribe Hilton Hotel; Traffic will be diverted on San Agustín Street. Traffic on Paseo Covadonga will be restricted starting at 4 a.m.

The Puerto Rico Police Bureau said residents will be informed about the traffic control plan for vehicle access to Old San Juan on a continuing basis through official social media.

Business group opposes inclusion of Walgreens in Vital pharmacy network

Entrepreneurs for Puerto Rico (EPPR by its initials in Spanish), a nonprofit organization representing business leaders committed to the economic and social development of the island, opposed the possible inclusion of Walgreens in the pharmacy network Plan Vital, the government-sponsored health plan, and warned of “the contractual, regulatory, and public policy risks.”

EPPR President Elliot Pacheco Beauchamp noted that in the public hearings held as part of the of the government transition process during the first weeks of December, Health Secretary Carlos Mellado López and Puerto Rico Health Insurance Administration (ASES) Executive Director Roxanna Rosario Serrano confirmed that the current pharmacy network, which is made up of 943 pharmacies distributed throughout the island, adequately meets the needs of the Plan Vital beneficiaries.

“There is no documentation or justification required by contract that establishes that the pharmacy network is poorly served,” Pacheco Beauchamp said. “This network has been designed under strict local and federal standards, guaranteeing adequate and continuous access to health services for vulnerable beneficiaries of the Vital Plan.”

The businessman also shared EPPR’s main concerns regarding the possible inclusion of Walgreens as a pharmacy provider within the Vital Plan network.

He said the inclusion of Walgreens could violate current contracts because it would alter the contractual terms between ASES and the pharmacy benefits manager (PBM), Abarca Health, which would put the stability of the network at risk.

The Vital Plan network, Pacheco Beauchamp said, was designed to guarantee adequate and sustainable access, principles that could be compromised if providers are added without adequate

justification and documentation, as stipulated in the current contract.

He also charged that Walgreens has faced multiple accusations of fraud, including a fine this past September for $106.8 million for violations to the False Claims Act in the Medicaid and Medicare programs. He said such a history of fraud and abuse represents a significant risk to the integrity of the health system in Puerto Rico and the continuity of federal funds that are scheduled to expire in 2027.

“Contracting with fraudulent entities or those accused of fraud puts the Medicaid program at risk and [makes it] precarious,” Pacheco Beauchamp said.

The EPPR, through its president, urged the Transition Committee to “… strongly reject and denounce any external pressure that seeks to distort a network that adequately complies with local and federal laws and regulations.”

“The history of fraud allegations [involving] Medicaid and Medicare programs that federal authorities have made against Walgreens raises doubts about its commitment to public health,” Pacheco Beauchamp said. “… The government’s public policy must focus on eradicating fraud, using and protecting federal funds, and promoting transparent administration.”

LMM Airport sets record, surpassing 13 million passengers

For the third consecutive time, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) broke the record for travelers in one year by welcoming the 13 millionth passenger with a celebration on Thursday by airport management company Aerostar Puerto Rico, the airport community and island tourism authorities.

The airport will close 2024 with a new record, after a record-setting year in 2023. The passenger who raised the number to 13 million users this year was 41-year-old Andrea Krimmel, who arrived on the island with her family on Delta Air Lines flight 1883 from Atlanta.

“We are celebrating an important moment for Aerostar, for the airport community, and for the entire tourism industry on the island,” Aerostar President Jorge Hernández said in a written statement. “Reaching the historic mark of 13 million passengers in one year is the result of sustained growth over the past few years. It is a reflection of the work of our team, of the thousands of employees who make up the airport community, and of the different members and sectors of an industry that drives the development of Puerto

Rico on a daily basis.”

Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Carlos

Mercado Santiago added that the sustained growth in air access gives the agency the confidence to continue adding new routes and increasing frequencies, ensuring that the trend continues in the coming years.

“This new record demonstrates the positive impact of commercial relations with airlines that continue to see our island as an ideal destination to continue growing their operations,” he said.

The flight was greeted at around 11:35 a.m. with a welcome ceremony, known in the aviation industry as a “water salute,” which consists of the formation of an arch with jets of water launched from two fire trucks toward the plane. The ceremony, which is performed on special occasions, was conducted by Aerostar’s Aircraft Rescue Firefighters team, and could be witnessed by the public through the windows of Terminal B overlooking the taxiway, adjacent to the runway.

Upon leaving, Krimmel was greeted by officials who presented her with various gifts, to the sound of Christmas rhythms played by a group of pleneros. Among the gifts was a check for $1,300 from Aerostar, Puerto Rican liquor and crafts from airport concessionaires, and a Global Lounge membership.

Thirty-eight Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) employees who were denied early retirement have sued the water utility for emotional distress and lost income in federal court.

According to a civil lawsuit filed recently, each employee is seeking $1 million for emotional distress and between $59,144 and $251,797 in actual loss of retirement income when they were denied early retirement after the Financial Oversight and

Management Board ordered PRASA to modify its early retirement program.

Puerto Rico enacted Act 80, which allowed employees to take early retirement. The lawsuit states that the program allowed employees to retire with 50% of their current pay as retirement benefits instead of 38% when they turned 65.

The oversight board blocked it, arguing that the commonwealth hadn’t budgeted for the cost.

On Dec. 20, 2021, the board filed an adversary proceeding against Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia and others within the Title

III bankruptcy process of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico to stop the implementation of Act 80. After several procedural matters, the employees were eventually declared essential and were not allowed to access the benefits and retire.

“Plaintiffs had and have a property interest in the early retirement process,” the lawsuit said. “Defendants conspired with each other and decided not to allow plaintiffs to take early retirement.”

The name of the case is Velez v PRASA, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico on Dec. 18.

PRASA employees sue for denial of early retirement Resolution to study hydrogen vehicles to be filed in House

Rep. José Aponte Hernández announced Thursday that as part of the upcoming legislative agenda, he will be filing a resolution to study the viability of promoting the sale of hydrogen vehicles in Puerto Rico.

“The sale of vehicles run on hydrogen has gained a type of peak during recent years,” the veteran legislator said in a written statement. “Our aim is to investigate the feasibility of promoting the sale of these vehicles in Puerto Rico. For this we have to study the market, the infrastructure that exists to support these vehicles compared to electric vehicles, and the availability to the consumer, among other aspects.”

Hydrogen vehicles are run by an electric motor that uses a hydrogen battery. They have a marked advantage

over electric vehicles, including a range of 600 miles on one charge.

Recharging the battery in a hydrogen vehicle takes five minutes, in comparison with the average 35-minute charging time for electric vehicles.

“The market for hydrogen vehicles is singular,” Aponte said. “In the continental United States sales have been going down since there are only two factories and only two models. Also, the lack of infrastructure for recharging is another factor. But in Europe and Japan in the second quarter of 2024, sales increased by 18 and 55 percent, respectively. What we are looking for is to see if we can sell these vehicles on the island in good numbers.”

According to available data, 18,740 hydrogen vehicles had been sold in the United States during 2024 as of Nov. 20.

The lack of refueling infrastructure for hydrogen vehicles, along with the cars’ high prices, has held them back in the mainland U.S. An island lawmaker said he will file a resolution to study the viability of promoting the sale of the vehicles in Puerto Rico. Assist or resist: Local officials debate Trump’s mass deportation threat

The San Diego region, like many communities that hug the southern border, saw a sharp drop in migrants entering the United States after the Biden administration made it harder to apply for asylum.

But thousands of newcomers who had crossed the border haven’t been forgotten, and even as many of them made their way to other corners of the country, some remain in and around San Diego, still undocumented.

Now, with President-elect Donald Trump pledging to carry out mass deportations, leaders in San Diego have been weighing how far to go in trying to protect people vulnerable to deportation and how much local law enforcement should cooperate with federal agents.

Such discussions are unfolding around the country after Trump won back the White House promising to curb immigration and tighten up border security.

But few places have been seeing the debate play out as dramatically as San Diego County, which sits on California’s border with Mexico, and where for a few weeks this year, the number of crossings was higher than in Texas and Arizona.

After Trump’s victory, the Board of Supervisors for San Diego County moved to bolster protections for migrants by requiring federal agents to obtain a judicial warrant for any immigrants in the country illegally that they want to pick up from a local jail, banning any investigative interviews by immigration officials inside jails and prohibiting the use of county resources for immigration enforcement.

But even in a state with some of the strongest shields for immigrants lacking permanent legal status, San Diego County was ratcheting up the fight over immigration enforcement, and the new protections drew swift and pointed criticism.

And it wasn’t just the Trump administration’s designated border czar who denounced the warrant mandate. San Diego’s own sheriff, who oversees the county jails, said she wouldn’t enforce the requirement.

The pushback by the county’s top law enforcement officer, who, like a majority of the county supervisors, is a Democrat, underscored emerging tensions over immigration even among officials who not long ago might have seemed more closely allied.

In what appears to be another sign of the friction in San Diego, the chair of the Board of Supervisors, Nora Vargas, said on Friday that

It’s easier and safer for ICE to arrest people at jails than on the streets, and the agency can round up far more people that way than it can by arresting people in homes and workplaces or on the street.

Arulanantham said requiring a judicial warrant is consistent with due process and Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable search and seizure.

And in the case of detainees whose sentences had been completed, a warrant would be the only lawful way to hold them until ICE could pick them up, Arulanantham said. “I definitely think that a detainer or transfer of somebody without a warrant after their sentence is over violates the Fourth Amendment.”

It is unclear how the conflict between the sheriff and the Board of Supervisors will play out. Local immigration advocates argue that the state’s law, known as the California Values Act, requires law enforcement to also abide by local policies on immigration.

she was stepping down, just weeks after being reelected. “Due to personal safety and security reasons, I will not take the oath of office for a second term,” Vargas said on social media.

The issue of how much local jails cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement has long been top of mind for federal officials. The cooperation, however, will be key for the Trump administration’s efforts to increase deportations.

When an immigrant is arrested and fingerprinted, the information is transmitted to ICE. Once ICE learns that an immigrant is in custody, federal officials often send requests — known as detainers — for the local jail to notify them well before an immigrant is to be released, so federal agents can take them.

In four of the last six fiscal years, ICE officials have issued more than 100,000 such requests (the numbers plunged for two years during the pandemic). Through the 2018 and 2019 fiscal years, during the Trump administration, ICE sent out more than 300,000 such requests.

Deportations have been carried out under every modern president, and it was under Barack Obama, a Democrat, that the debate over so-called sanctuary cities really took off.

But it is Trump’s pledge to carry out mass deportations that has plunged local

governments ever deeper into the debate over immigration enforcement, said Ahilan Arulanantham, co-director of the Center for Immigration Law and Policy at the UCLA School of Law. “I think people feel the weight of it more because most people think Trump can’t accomplish quote unquote mass deportation without extensive cooperation with state and local governments.”

In saying she would not enforce San Diego’s new requirement, the county sheriff, Kelly Martinez, said in a statement that, “While protecting the rights of undocumented immigrants is crucial, it is equally important to ensure that victims of crimes are not overlooked or neglected in the process.”

Martinez said she does support the state law that limits cooperation with federal immigration authorities. It allows for the transfer of prisoners being held in connection with certain crimes from ICE once they are eligible for release.

Under the Biden administration, the number of people transferred from San Diego jails to ICE custody has declined sharply. Last year, 25 people were transferred to ICE after serving time for crimes such as grand theft, murder and drug trafficking. By comparison, in 2017 San Diego transferred 1,143 people, according to the sheriff’s department.

In a letter to the sheriff, Ian M. Seruelo, chair of the San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium, said, “We hope that your statement was a mere misunderstanding on your part of the full scope of the California Values Act, and not a flagrant disregard for state law, our democratic processes and our constitutional rights.”

In an interview, Seruelo, who is also a practicing immigration lawyer, said that any coordination between local law enforcement and immigration agents harms public safety because it makes immigrants less likely to report crimes or cooperate as witnesses. “A lot of families here in San Diego have an undocumented member,” he said. “If that level of trust is diminished toward local law enforcement, it will discourage many San Diegans from reporting crime or from accessing county resources or services.”

The lone dissenting vote on San Diego’s Board of Supervisors came from Jim Desmond, a Republican, who said there already are protections for immigrants reporting crimes or dealing with the local police, who are barred from asking about immigration status.

“So we’re talking about people that have already committed the crime, they’ve already been tried for the crime and convicted and sentenced and they are in our jails,” he said. “And so this has nothing to do with reporting, doesn’t put anyone in jeopardy for reporting. All this does is allow our sheriffs to let ICE know that these people are in our custody and when they are going to get out.”

With the incoming administration promising to tighten up the border and carry out a wave of mass deportations, there are growing divisions among local and state officials about how far to go in cooperating with federal immigration agents to round up those living in the United States illegally. Subway burning highlights difficulty of identifying homeless victims

More than three days after a woman was fatally burned by another passenger inside a subway train on Coney Island, officials have not yet been able to confirm her identity.

Police have charged a man, Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, 33, with murder in the Sunday morning attack. They believe he set the woman’s clothing on fire while she was sleeping on the train and she died from the burns and smoke inhalation, in a gruesome incident caught on cellphone video.

The struggle to identify the woman, whom authorities believe was homeless, underscores how difficult it can be to gather information about people who may not have permanent addresses or personal

documents. But in this case, there is an added complication: The horrific way the woman was attacked may be making her identification even harder.

“It just adds another level to a tragedy,” said David Giffen, executive director of the Coalition for the Homeless. “At this point, we still don’t even know who she was and she can’t be mourned.”

The medical examiner’s office confirmed Wednesday that the woman had not yet been identified and that the investigation was continuing. The Brooklyn district attorney’s office, which is investigating the case, did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday.

Joseph Giacalone, a retired New York police sergeant and an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice,

said burns can make simple methods of identification — using facial features, or fingerprints — difficult or impossible. That means investigators have to rely on dental and DNA analysis, or see if the victim had any surgeries that match known medical records.

People who are homeless might not carry wallets, pocketbooks or documents with clear identifying information, Giacalone said. Even if there was some documentation available, investigators would need to try to verify that it was accurate, he said.

People without steady homes may also be transient and have lived in other states. Even if the woman was a local, she could be from anywhere in the city: The train she was found on — the F train — runs from Coney Island, at the southern tip of Brooklyn, up through Manhattan and then east into outer Queens.

Finding people in the homeless community who might have known her would be difficult across such a vast geography, he said. They might have had negative interactions with authorities in the past, and they could be reluctant to help with the investigation, he added.

Finally, Giacalone said, even after authorities think they have confirmed the woman’s identity, they would need to find

a way to contact relatives to notify them of her death before publicly identifying her.

“This could go on for quite a while,” he said.

The attack, which seemed to contribute to fears among some New Yorkers that the transit system is not safe, took place while the subway train was stationary at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station.

Authorities said Zapeta-Calil, who has been charged with first-degree murder and arson, is expected to plead not guilty in the coming weeks. His lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

The woman did not seem to know Zapeta-Calil, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Giffen said both the woman’s death and the trouble in identifying her reflected how people who are homeless often “fall through the cracks.” He said the situation also underscored people’s broader lack of interaction with, and empathy toward, those who are homeless.

“It’s OK to ask somebody their name,” he said, adding that “we can’t forget our humanity as a city.”

“The fact that nobody knows who this woman is,” he said, “is the saddest story I can imagine during the holidays.”

Delays grow after American Airlines grounds US flights over technical issue

Thousands of travelers trying to make it to their loved ones for the holidays were stuck at airports through much of Tuesday after American Airlines briefly grounded all its flights in the United States because of a technical issue and bad weather made those delays worse.

The worst of the troubles were centered at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, which is American Airlines’ largest hub and is one of the country’s busiest airports.

The travel problems began Tuesday morning when systems that are needed to release flights malfunctioned because of what American said in a statement was a vendor technology issue. Then came the weather: A system of storms that prompted a flood warning moved into the Dallas area and hundreds of flights were delayed even after the technical issue was resolved about an hour later.

By Tuesday night, only 15% of American Airlines flights at Dallas Fort Worth had departed on time, according to Cirium, an aviation data company. And earlier, the airline requested a ground stop for flights headed to the airport. That stop lasted for over four hours, until about 8:30 p.m.

The thunderstorms caused average departure delays of more than two hours at Dallas Fort Worth for most of the day but began to decrease to just over an hour Tuesday night, according to FlightAware, an aviation tracker. For many, the wait was much longer.

“The 7-hour — and counting — adventure of rescheduled and delayed flights has resulted in me spending more of Christmas Eve

at the DFW Pizza Hut Bar than with my wife, waiting for me in Tucson,” said Desmond Zantua, 35, of Queens, New York, who had a layover in Dallas.

The customer service line, Zantua added, went on “forever.” Later, the pilot on his flight “timed out,” and then his flight to Tucson was canceled, stretching his travel to 18 hours — and counting.

For those planning to travel on Christmas Day through the airport, the Dallas-Fort Worth region was expected to have cloudy but otherwise calm weather. On Thursday, travelers passing through the airport after the holiday face the

possibility of more thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service’s forecast.

It was not immediately clear Tuesday night when the airline and the airport expected to clear all delayed flights.

It was also not known what exactly caused the original technical issue. In a statement, the airline said that it had experienced an issue with vendor technology that affected the systems needed to release flights.

The ground stop caused by the technical delay lasted only for an hour, but it came on what was expected to be a record period for holiday travel. Tens of millions of people

fly during the period from mid-December to shortly after New Year’s Day. The FAA had said it expected more than 31,000 flights on Christmas Eve.

American is the largest carrier in the United States by number of seats, according to OAG, an aviation data provider. It had more than 3,300 domestic flights scheduled Tuesday and 581 international departures, according to Cirium.

Some passengers took the problem in stride. Mary Hardy, 64, was waiting at Dallas Fort Worth for her flight to Newark when the delay was announced. She said she was disappointed, but acknowledged that mishaps were to be expected during holiday travel.

“We should have known flying out Christmas Eve that something could happen,” she said. “You just have to be prepared.”

The disruption also came during a rocky year for the aviation industry. In July, a flawed software update issued by the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike led to a global technology outage, affecting many businesses, including airlines. At least five U.S. airlines — Allegiant, American, Delta, Spirit and United — grounded all flights for a time, according to the FAA.

In December 2022, bad weather forced several airlines to cancel many flights on Christmas, but Southwest Airlines struggled for much longer than its competitors. It took days for Southwest to restore operations as it grappled with technical and other problems, including an inability to efficiently get crews to where they were needed. The meltdown stranded an estimated two million passengers and cost Southwest more than $1 billion, including lost revenue, refunds and reimbursements.

Dealmakers see return of more, bigger megadeals in 2025

Top Wall Street CEOs and dealmakers are anticipating an uptick in larger mergers and acquisitions under the incoming Trump administration, after such megadeals evaporated this year due to a harsher regulatory environment.

On Tuesday, Trump named Andrew Ferguson to replace Lina Khan as the chair of the Federal Trade Commission, appointing a current Republican member of the agency who has promised to ease up on the policing of large tie-ups.

“There hasn’t been a single deal over $40 billion in 2024 and if you go back in history, there are usually a handful of them that are above $40 billion. The era of the large deal is certainly not dead - and we would expect to see some of those transactions come back in 2025,” said Tom Miles, global head of M&A at Morgan Stanley, in a panel at the Reuters NEXT conference in New York.

Wall Street executives have so far cheered the prospect of business-friendly regulations and are anticipating a burst of deals next year, as Donald Trump’s return to the White House is likely to significantly ease some regulatory pressures that dealmakers faced under the Biden administration. On Tuesday, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon said dealmaking in equities and M&A could exceed 10year averages next year.

In an early sign of increased optimism, more than $40 billion worth of M&A transactions were announced in the U.S. on Monday, including the $13 billion tie-up between Madison Avenue advertising giants Omnicom and InterPublic Group.

“There is an expectation that Trump is going to perhaps follow the Reagan era of the 1980s and he’s going to go first on (reducing) taxes, which will be a boost to corporate earnings. The next step would be around tariffs, immigration policy, as well as deregulation. So all of that really does provide tailwinds to an economy that’s already very strong,” said Michal Katz, Mizuho’s Americas head of investment and corporate banking.

While the near-term outlook for M&A activity has brightened significantly, investment bankers and deals lawyers flagged the impact of policy uncertainty, protec-

tionism, and inflationary pressures under Trump as potential headwinds for the business of corporate dealmaking.

Further cuts in U.S. interest rates are expected to benefit buyout firms, after a spike in financing costs during the last two years made financing leveraged buyouts more expensive and big deals hard to clinch.

The private equity industry is sitting on roughly $4 trillion of capital that is yet to be deployed and dealmakers anticipate a surge in buyout volumes

next year.

“What we saw happening in the second part of the year is the return of private equity transactions. The third quarter had the highest volume of PE-backed transactions since the second quarter of 2022,” said Katz.

Global M&A volumes stood at $3.2 trillion during the first 11 months of 2024, up from $2.76 trillion during the same period last year, according to data provider Dealogic.

Dealmaking activity in also expected to get a nearterm boost from inbound acquisition interest from foreign buyers for high-growth U.S. companies.

Mpox is spreading in Congo’s capital, threatening global efforts to contain the virus

Mireille Efonge got sick a few months ago, with a fever and painful blisters on her groin. She became too weak to move, so neighbors carried her to a health center with walls of plastic sheeting in Pakadjuma, a crowded, poor community in Kinshasa, Congo’s capital.

There, a nurse called an ambulance to take her to a hospital. Soon lesions broke out on her head and the rest of her body, each one a hard nub of throbbing pain.

Finally she was given a diagnosis: Mpox. “I’d never heard of it,” Efonge said.

This was back in August, when the mpox virus — closely related to smallpox — was still almost unknown in Kinshasa, a city of 17 million people.

Some researchers now recall that time almost wistfully, because it might still have been possible then to fence in the mpox virus, to fend off disaster.

That window has probably closed, they say.

The detection of a new, fast-spreading strain of the virus in a remote mining town in eastern Congo led the World Health Organization to declare mpox a global public health emergency in August. Since then, its spread has only accelerated.

The virus is taking hold in crowded camps home to millions of displaced Congolese, who live crammed into rough shelters with limited access to water. And it has reached Congo’s cities, including its enormous, congested capital.

Belated efforts to control mpox in Kinshasa — by isolating patients and vaccinating their contacts — have been halting and haphazard, far outpaced by the speed of the virus’s spread and change.

Congo’s response to the emergency has been choked by bureaucracy; clinicians and others involved say privately that their leaders are locked in fights over access to an influx of international funds. The effort has been complicated by the country’s vast size and feeble infrastructure, and by the weakness of its health care system, whose workers are poorly and rarely paid.

A much-hyped vaccination campaign is unfolding at a glacial pace. Hundreds of thousands of vaccines sit in freezers,

unused. Half of those infected are children, but not a single child has been vaccinated.

Only a fraction of mpox cases are confirmed with laboratory analysis. Few contacts of sick people are traced. And nowhere is the effort less effective than in Kinshasa, where two strains of the virus are now mingling within a particularly vulnerable population.

Mpox has historically been a rural disease in Congo, causing sporadic small outbreaks, mostly infecting children in isolated communities in the thick forest in the center and west of the country.

The current health crisis began a year ago, when researchers identified a mysterious new strain of the mpox virus that seemed to be spreading through heterosexual sex in a mining town in the far east of the country. They named it Clade Ib to distinguish it from the version that had been known and studied in Congo since 1970, Clade Ia.

Since then, Clade Ib has spread to six more African countries and turned up in travelers in the United States, Canada, Thailand, Sweden and other nations.

In Congo, it has helped drive mpox cases to a record high of 53,000 this year, more than triple the number in 2023. About 1,250 people have died of the virus this year.

In Kinshasa, Clade Ib, which is thought to be more contagious, has taken root in Pakadjuma, where many women make a living by selling sex to customers from all

over the city.

The virus’s spread in Pakadjuma’s narrow alleyways has drawn a response far less robust than that for mpox outbreaks in other parts of Congo. Yet it poses a significant threat to the people who live there, to the rest of the country and to the world beyond.

Pakadjuma, just 6 miles from the gleaming offices of the National Institute for Public Health, sits behind high walls built to shield a railway line. The walls hide ditches of open sewage, scrap-metal shanties and children playing barefoot in muddy lanes.

Cases of the endemic strain were reported in the neighborhood for the first time last year. Many residents come and go from Équateur province to the northeast, where the virus has long circulated. And now the new strain is in Pakadjuma, too.

“When we analyze the genomes, we can see that Pakadjuma is a hot spot. It’s where you see both clades circulating,” said Dr. Placide Mbala, who heads the epidemiology division of Congo’s National Institute of Biomedical Research and runs its pathogen genomics laboratory.

The community is a crowded, unplanned science experiment.

“We don’t know, but I can speculate and say this can lead to a virus capable of more sustained human-to-human transmission,” Mbala said. He added that it’s a “matter of time” until a patient ends up infected with both strains.

And those patients will be people like Efonge, who supports her children by selling sex. She and her neighbors are among the most marginalized in the country, with the least access to medical care. “If the virus seeds in this population it would be difficult to get rid of it,” Mbala said.

Vaccination against mpox finally began in Pakadjuma in early December, four months after the United States offered Congo

a first donation of 50,000 vaccines. Vaccinators conducted two of a planned 10 days of immunizations; as of Friday, they had offered the shots to only a few hundred sex workers and health workers.

More than 385,000 donated mpox vaccines have arrived in Congo and at least 700,000 more are awaiting shipment. But the country had administered just 53,000 shots as of last week.

“Are we satisfied? Not at all,” said Dr. Ngashi Ngongo, who oversees the mpox response for the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, which is coordinating vaccine distribution throughout the continent. Congo will need to use the shots it has before the country can be allotted more doses, he said.

Six months into the epidemic in Kinshasa, the mpox response center in Pakadjuma offers just two services to people who think they may have the virus. A nurse can swab their lesions and send the sample away for testing, or call an ambulance to take the very ill to one of two treatment centers.

At Vijana hospital, patients are crammed five or six to a room in a small two-story brick building. Infection control practices are imperfect, with masks, gloves and gowns changed haphazardly. A doctor caught the virus from a patient and spent weeks hospitalized, needing supplemental oxygen.

On a recent morning, a woman came to the Pakadjuma center for testing. She moved slowly with a distinctive walk that’s familiar in the neighborhood — her thighs held wide apart to try to keep any of the skin in her groin from touching. When she lay down in the tent, a nurse, Bébé Bola, dabbed at lesions on her

From page 9

vulva with a testing swab; the woman let out a ragged, high-pitched scream.

Bola tried to convince the woman to go to the hospital, but she was unwilling to leave the community — a response Bola encounters every day.

“This is their village, where their family can come — somewhere else, they will be alone,” she said. Patients fear they will face judgment and scorn as residents of Pakadjuma. So they refuse the hospital transport.

“We can’t force them,” Bola said. “If we could keep people here we might control the epidemic — but for

now, we let them leave and the disease circulates.”

Sex workers in Pakadjuma normally see about five customers in a typical night, when music thumps out of speakers with heavy bass. Colored lights guide the way to busy houses. But business has fallen off as word has spread about the virus.

Increasingly, the patients are children infected by their mothers (the virus can spread through touch and shared blankets).

Bureaucratic wrangling continues to stall a first shipment of 50,000 doses of a Japanese-made vaccine called LC16, the only immunization for this virus approved for use in children. Japan offered Congo 3 million doses

of the vaccine in August. It may arrive in the next few weeks.

Getting children protected will take more than the vaccines: Unlike the shot used for adults, LC16 must be delivered with a special two-pronged needle that punctures the top layer of the skin. Japan is donating an initial supply of the needles, but Congo’s health workers must be trained in using them; this method has not been used in decades.

The vaccine comes in a 250-dose vial that must be discarded six hours after opening; Congo’s vaccination programs have not shown the ability to administer the doses in that time frame.

Syria’s new leaders try to unite rebel factions under a single government

Syria’s new leadership has taken steps to try to unite disparate rebel factions under a single government, the latest move to try to assert authority over the country in the wake of Bashar Assad’s ouster.

A number of rebel factions have agreed to dissolve themselves and be integrated under the Defense Ministry, according to SANA, the Syrian state-run news service.

Beyond dissolving rebel factions, Ahmad al-Sharaa, the leader of the offensive that overthrew the Assad dictatorship, has taken other actions recently aimed at building a new state. His administration has appointed a caretaker prime minister to lead a transitional government until March and has promised that a legal committee would draft a new constitution.

Disbanding the country’s armed factions was a logical step for a leadership trying to establish a single national military.

“They are trying to build a state,” said Dareen Khalifa, a senior adviser at the In-

ternational Crisis Group, which researches global crises. “You can’t build a state while you have a million and one militias running around doing their own things.”

Khalifa, who met al-Sharaa this week, said she was under the impression that dissolving the rebel factions was a top priority for Syria’s new leaders because “wayward factions” were acting outside their command in parts of rural Syria.

Amid the efforts to disband rebel factions, there were scattered clashes and outbursts of violence.

The Syrian Military Operations Command said it was conducting a security operation in the city of Homs against forces with the former regime that had fired on civilians.

A curfew was imposed on Homs; Tartus, a major Syrian port city on the Mediterranean coast; and Latakia from 8 p.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday.

The agreement to unite the rebels was reported Tuesday. Pictures posted on social media the same day showed al-Sharaa meeting with dozens of rebel faction leaders, many of them clad in military uniforms.

Al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, has participated in official meetings recently wearing a business suit rather than a military uniform. Since his faction, Hayat Tahrir alSham, routed Assad, he has presented himself as more of a statesman and less of a rebel leader, and has espoused relatively moderate political positions despite past links to Islamist extremists.

On Sunday, he said at a news conference that the

Members of the Christian Scouts of the St. George’s Syriac Orthodox church march through the streets in the Bab Touma neighborhood under the watchful eye of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham fighters in Damascus, on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2024. (Daniel Berehulak/The New York Times)

“logic of a state is different from the logic of a revolution.” He spoke standing alongside Turkey’s foreign minister, Hakan Fidan.

“We absolutely will not allow for weapons outside the framework of the state,” alSharaa said, adding that he was referring both to rebel groups and to a Kurdish-led militia, the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, who are separate from the rebels.

The Syrian Democratic Forces control an autonomous region dominated by Kurds in northeastern Syria, while the rebel groups hold sway in other parts of the country. A rebel alliance with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in the lead helped topple the Assad dictatorship.

The SANA report said all rebel factions signed on to Tuesday’s unity agreement. But The New York Times was not able to independently verify that. The Syrian Democratic Forces did not appear to have signed on.

Farhad Shami, a new media official with the Syrian Democratic Forces, said his group

wasn’t opposed in principle to being integrated into a new Syrian military, but the matter required discussions with the new leaders in Damascus, the Syrian capital, without the intervention of regional powers.

He said the Syrian Democratic Forces would like to speak with their counterparts in Damascus about fighting the Islamic State group, writing a new constitution that guarantees the rights of all Syrians, holding elections and forming an inclusive government.

The Kurdish-led force has been battling the Islamic State in Syria for years with U.S. military backing. Neighboring Turkey is hostile to the Kurdish force, viewing it as an extension of a Kurdish group in Turkey that has been fighting the Turkish state for decades.

On Wednesday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey said Kurdish forces in Syria must either put down their weapons or “be buried.”

Blake Lively turns the shame around

Actor Blake Lively worked with me on a 2015 PBS documentary exploring sex trafficking in the United States. She was shaken by what we found, deeply compassionate toward survivors and willing to look unflinchingly at an ugliness that many avert their eyes from.

The villains then were easy to spot: brutes who raped, sold and enslaved underage girls. In the real world, it’s more complicated. Predators can hold glamorous jobs, present themselves as feminists and be celebrated for their roles empowering women.

That’s the situation Lively describes in an explosive legal complaint that she filed Friday against Wayfarer Studios, maker of her recent film “It Ends With Us.” She alleges that after she protested sexual harassment by Justin Baldoni, her co-star and the film’s director, the studio retaliated with a PR smear campaign against her. Lively also names Baldoni and several public relations experts in the suit.

Ironies abound. The film is in part about how men get away with mistreating women around them. As my New York Times colleagues noted in a must-read article, Baldoni was honored this month at an event heralding men who “elevate women” and “promote gender equality.” And he reportedly has described himself as a feminist and has said things like, “Let’s just shut up and finally listen to the women in our lives.”

So, with the caveat that the complaint presents just one

side, let’s listen.

Lively alleges that Baldoni added sexual content and gratuitous nude scenes to the film and treated women disrespectfully. During a childbirth scene, the filing says, the studio allowed “nonessential crew to pass through while Ms. Lively was mostly nude with her legs spread wide in stirrups and only a small piece of fabric covering her genitalia.” Among the nonessential people who showed up, she says, was a Wayfarer co-chair.

“Ms. Lively became even more alarmed when Mr. Baldoni introduced his ‘best friend’ to play the role of the OB-GYN,” the complaint states. It adds that “the selection of Mr. Baldoni’s friend for this intimate role, in which the actor’s face and hands were in close proximity to her nearly nude genitalia for a birth scene, was invasive and humiliating.”

Lively’s complaint says that executives entered her trailer uninvited when she was undressed, ogled her when she was topless, asked intimate questions and commented inappropriately on various women involved in the film.

Text messages and emails obtained by Lively’s lawyers through a subpoena suggest that Wayfarer organized a social media campaign to preemptively discredit her, for fear that she would speak up about her claims. “We can bury anyone,” boasted a crisis management expert hired by the studio, in an exchange about her.

Wayfarer and Baldoni strongly deny the allegations. “It is shameful that Ms. Lively and her representatives would make such serious and categorically false accusations,” a lawyer for the studio said in a statement to the Times. After she raised initial concerns, Wayfarer agreed to provide an intimacy coordinator and added other safeguards.

What is clear is that Lively faced a surge of online negativity last summer, with The Daily Mail asking if she was about to be canceled and suggesting that her star might be forever tarnished. Sales of her hair care products fell.

Even in an age when wild lies and deepfakes catch fire on social media, it’s a little scary to think that a few PR professionals could manage to undercut one of America’s best-known celebrities so successfully, swiftly and effortlessly. If “social manipulation,” as the internal messages referred to the apparent campaign, can damage a famous person like Lively, is anyone safe? As one of the people hired by Wayfarer put it, “People really want to hate on women.”

I suspect that the last thing Lively wants is for us to be discussing people leering at her while she was naked. This suit prolongs the humiliation. But the only way to end impunity is to speak up.

In a very different context, in France, Gisèle Pelicot spoke out after her husband arranged for dozens of men to rape her while she was drugged. “The shame must change sides,” she said, and of course, she was right: The shame lies with the rapists, not with their targets. And while what Lively faced is not the same, it’s also true that on a movie set or anywhere else, the stigma and humiliation should fall on the abusers, not the abused. That’s the only way forward, and it happens when people step forward and file suits with painful details.

Justin Baldoni receives an award for being an ally to women in New York, Dec. 9, 2024. A legal filing has since accused him of harassment and retaliation against the actress Blake Lively. (Jeenah Moon/The New York Times)

We don’t know all that happened on the set of “It Ends With Us,” and Baldoni and the studio executives have a right to be heard. More will emerge as this case proceeds.

The online campaign against Lively suggested that she was a diva and difficult to work with. All I know is that during the collaboration with Lively on the documentary, “A Path Appears,” by Show of Force, I found her authentic, delightful and committed. She wanted to use her stardom to help others who needed the attention more, such as survivors of human trafficking. She wanted to use her celebrity to help chip away at misogyny and oppression.

She was particularly moved by the courage of women who shared harrowing accounts of being trafficked. “I just have so much admiration and respect for these women, for opening up and telling their stories,” Lively said at the time. “Because it makes me think, if that happened to me, would I have the courage?”

Then she said something that shapes how I see her in this moment. Speaking of the trafficking survivors we met, Lively said: “They don’t want to hear, ‘You’re so inspirational,’ because that implies you’re a victim. It’s like, ‘I don’t want to be an inspiration. I just want to be a woman. I just want to be an equal.’”

‘Babygirl’ review: Nicole Kidman takes control

“Babygirl” isn’t a romantic comedy or a romance or even a comedy, though it concerns matters of the heart, and has a friskily impolite sense of humor. Set over what seems like a very long Christmas season, it centers on Romy — a transfixing Nicole Kidman — a married woman who enters a dominant-submissive affair that almost consumes her. It’s a story about women, bodies and the regulation of both, and what it means when a woman surrenders her most secret self. All of which is to say, it’s also about power, but with kinks. Romy is the chief executive of a slick,

“Babygirl”, set over what seems like a very long Christmas season, centers on Romy — a transfixing Nicole Kidman — a married woman who enters a dominant-submissive affair that almost consumes her.

growing robotics company that, from its videos, seems to provide warehouse automation. Presumably, the robots moving goods around will eventually make human labor redundant; in the meantime, they serve as a hardworking metaphor for a woman who’s rationalized every aspect of her existence. At her New York apartment, she dresses for another high-flying workday but then slips on a frowzy apron as she packs her children’s lunches with handwritten notes. (The lack of hired help is an off detail.) The apron seems incongruent with her job and the frictionless perfection of her domestic realm that her puzzled husband, Jacob (Antonio Banderas), asks about it.

Writer-director Halina Reijn (“Bodies Bodies Bodies”) is just as scrupulously attentive to detail as Romy. With sensitivity to the gilded surfaces of Romy’s life, and with a series of brisk, narratively condensed scenes, the filmmaker sketches in a woman who presents an aspirational ideal, from her glossy lipstick to her teetering heels. Yet while the ceiling-to-floor windows of Romy’s importantly situated office announce that she’s a contemporary woman with nothing to hide, you know better: By the time Romy first breezes into work, you have already watched her sprint naked from her postcoital bed — where Jacob is sleeping the deep, contented sleep of the satiated

— so she can secretly masturbate to online pornography.

The movie’s opener is a grabber — the first shot in the movie is a close-up of Romy seemingly on the orgasmic verge — and not only because Kidman bares her lovely, apple-cheeked rear as her character bolts down the hall. From the moment that the actress’s backside and coltish legs are gliding through the hushed darkness of Romy’s tastefully luxurious apartment, the movie seems to be invoking Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 erotic drama “Eyes Wide Shut.” In that hallucinatory film, which also opens at Christmastime, Kidman plays a married woman who sends her husband (Tom Cruise) spiraling after she tells him about her unconsummated desire for another man. “I was ready to give up everything,” she says.

In “Babygirl,” female desire opens another Pandora’s box of trouble. As in a lot of romantic comedies, the meet-cute in “Babygirl” has been strategically orchestrated. Romy is rushing to work on a day like any other when she’s stopped in her tracks by the sight of a dog ferociously attacking someone. Visibly shaken, she continues to watch frozen as a tall, dark-haired, young stranger sharply commands the dog, which instantly stops its attack and nuzzles him. Romy is impressed, though not altogether for obvious reasons: In short order, it beco -

mes clear that she too wants to a firm hand, to nuzzle the commanding stranger and be commanded in turn.

In a coincidence that strains credulity, suggesting that this story may also be a kind of fantasy, the dog-wrangling stranger shows up at Romy’s office. One of a gaggle of new interns, Samuel (Harris Dickinson), immediately catches her eye once more, an attraction that — as testy flirting boss-talk gives way to furtive, hungrily submissive embraces — quickly evolves into something far more freighted than an ill-advised workplace liaison. Unlike the character in “Eyes Wide Shut,” Romy takes the leap into annihilating desire, risking everything in an affair that reverses her and Samuel’s work dynamic. As she waits on all fours, he takes lead. Reijn handles the affair discreetly, using evocative choreography, softly beautiful lighting and carefully deployed depth of focus to intimate more than she reveals. Your mileage will vary, of course, but the results are more dreamily sexy-romantic than scorching, which seems to reflect Reijn’s larger concerns. Romy may have certain needs, but the filmmaker is less concerned with the specifics of dominance and submission, in ritualized sexual favors, leashes and all the rest, and more focused on power, women, pleasure and unbounded desire. In several montage sequences, you see Romy and Samuel testing and discovering each other; you also see two people who have briefly slipped off the restraints of everyday life.

It’s an enjoyable liberation story of a kind, even if Romy’s search for existential freedom proves disappointingly limited. Hers isn’t the soul-crushing bummer that, say, Henrik Ibsen’s “Hedda Gabler” is, but Romy’s and the story’s horizons remain narrow. Even so, Reijn and her performers, including Sophie Wilde as Romy’s assistant, Esme, consistently edge this material into deeper waters, which allows you to consider other possibilities for them. For her part, Kidman takes “Babygirl” to its breaking point with a performance that risks your laughter and — as she dismantles her character’s perfection piece by piece — exposes a raw vulnerability that can be shocking. It’s the rawest thing in this movie, and it’s bliss.

After living the NFL dream, ex-Steeler found a calling in woodworking

In some ways, John Malecki can thank a cheap coffee table for his 1.2 million subscribers on YouTube.

Had he owned a sturdier table, maybe he wouldn’t have thought twice about his enthusiasm for HGTV’s home improvement show “Fixer Upper,” which he watched on repeat as a fringe offensive lineman in the NFL.

As it turns out, though, Malecki’s table broke right before his final preseason with his hometown Pittsburgh Steelers in 2013. And as the “Fixer Upper” fan he was, building a new one sounded way better than just buying a replacement.

At that point, Malecki, an undrafted free agent out of Pitt, was on his fifth team in four years. Football had always been his North Star, guiding him in any decision since elementary school.

Now, in his mid-20s, that North Star was dimming.

In between training camp practices, with the help of some Home Depot two-by-fours, Malecki constructed a homemade coffee table for his South Side Pittsburgh apartment. As he reflected on his appreciation for the work Chip and Joanna Gaines did on “Fixer Upper,” he thought, I kind of want to build my own cool things.

In the weeks that followed, and especially after his NFL career ended when he was cut in September that year, he bought some new woodworking tools — the start of what would be a large collection, and a whole new passion.

Today, Malecki’s YouTube subscribers tune in to his woodworking channel to watch him build everything from cutting boards and end tables to a hidden whiskey cabinet and a door inspired by “The Lord of the Rings.”

Like others who pour themselves into their work, Malecki did not view himself as someone who had many interests out-

Former NFL offensive lineman John Malecki’s YouTube subscribers tune in to his woodworking channel to watch him build everything from cutting boards and end tables to a hidden whiskey cabinet and a door inspired by “The Lord of the Rings.” (johnmalecki.com)

side football. When he started building his coffee table, he had no formal training and didn’t know what he was doing; he was just curious and allowed himself to follow that curiosity.

Two years earlier, Malecki was holed up in an extended stay hotel on Christmas Day, alone except for a bottle of Jack Daniels and a jigsaw puzzle. A member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad at the time, Malecki was already on his third team that season. The Bucs played the next day, and the bottle and puzzle filled his time away from home.

Back in Pennsylvania, Malecki’s family was crafting its annual lavish spread: filet roast paired with pasta made from scratch, his grandmother’s homemade gnocchi, his mother’s pumpkin pie.

His mother had sent him a care package that week, trying to replicate the experience.

Still, he said, “I was super bummed.”

And yet he was also living out everything he had always wanted. When he was a 10-year-old growing up in Murrysville, 30 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, he had

placed a piece of paper in a time capsule with his dream written on it: “I’m going to be in the NFL.”

If that meant Christmases alone in a hotel room and away from his family, that was part of the deal.

“At the time I was a firm believer that you have to suffer in order to get what you want in life,” he said.

After that season with the Bucs, he had two more stints with the Steelers sandwiched around a brief stop in Washington. When the Steelers’ head coach, Mike Tomlin, called him into his office in 2013, Malecki’s intuition told him it might be permanent.

“Appreciate your work, John,” Tomlin told him.

His football career was over.

The next spring, Malecki interviewed for a sales job at a metal byproduct company. He hadn’t played in the NFL in months, and what he wanted more than a sales job was another shot in the NFL.

But when the owner of the company told him during the interview, “This is great, John, but you don’t have any experience,” it was like a slap across the face.

“I was useless,” Malecki said. “I had no skills.”

He added: “All my childhood hopes and dreams crumbling. I was just sad. Just lost in multiple facets of life.”

The one thing Malecki continued to do during that time of uncertainty was build new stuff out of wood.

One day, Malecki was hanging out with a former teammate, Baron Batch, who had just bought a house. The lack of furniture was glaring. No table or chairs, just couches.

They were sitting in the empty garage, looking at the workbench in the corner, crowded with random supplies on top of it.

“What if we built stuff?” Malecki asked Batch.

The same excitement Malecki had before he built his apartment coffee table crept in. Soon after, Batch’s house was furnished with homemade tables, cabinets and shelving.

Buying tools off Craigslist, using more Home Depot two-by-fours and an old jointer his father had given him, Malecki started to spend most of his time attempting new builds.

“I was just boozing and hanging out with

my buddies,” Malecki said, laughing. “We were curious a lot, and I was trying to figure out that next thing in life.”

He began posting on Facebook and Instagram, showing what he and Batch were doing. He had no expectations of where this could lead. But comments started to roll in:

I would love one.

Could you make me that?

Batch and Malecki decided to open a studio together, called Studio AM, where they combined Batch’s artistic visions with Malecki’s woodworking skills. As time went on, and his Instagram and Facebook following grew, he decided a YouTube presence could help, so he started posting a few videos.

“They are so bad,” Malecki said. “Just awful.”

Then, in 2016, he posted a video of a crosscut sled, a common woodworking tool. It was a basic YouTube post, and he expected the usual mild response. Except it got a couple hundred thousand views. I don’t know how to capitalize on this, but this feels good, he thought.

As he was finding his way, he kept repeating a mantra he used during his football career: “Just do the reps, John. You go to the gym, you hate it, just do the reps. You don’t like this drill, you don’t like this exercise, the coach said do it, you do it.”

Malecki allowed himself the freedom to explore an area he was curious about, gradually letting go of the idea that his only purpose in life was football. But he did keep his sense of purpose, the things he believed in that translated across fields.

“Effort and attitude — those are two of the controllable things you have,” Malecki said. “I took that from football and applied it dramatically to the next phase of my life. You can’t lose if you don’t quit.”

In 2018, Malecki signed a yearlong sponsorship with a company for $65,000, his big financial breakthrough. It was the first time he realized he could actually make a living woodworking. Now, he makes in one month almost what he did in his best year in the NFL.

“We were just taken aback at how creative he was,” Max Starks, a former Steelers teammate, said of Malecki. “We knew he was creative, we knew he was funny, but to combine both of those things and do it so seamlessly and be genuine about it is something that’s kind of fascinating.”
