an Juan Mayor Miguel A. Romero Lugo recently announced the regulations for granting permits, authorizations, and commercial licenses for the upcoming San Sebastián Street Festival, scheduled from January 16 to January 19, 2025.

The rules are outlined in Ordinance No. 5 Series 2024-2025, aiming to ensure an orderly, safe, and enjoyable experience for everyone attending the cultural event in Puerto Rico, according to a statement Saturday.

Mayor Romero Lugo emphasized the importance of maintaining the historical and tourist appeal of Old San Juan while fostering a sense of community during the festivities. He said, “We want this event to be memorable for all participants by maintaining order and respecting our communities.”

The regulated commercial activities include installing and using promotional inflatables, distributing and displaying promotional materials, utilizing balconies for commercial promotions or advertising, temporary signage in public or private spaces within the Isleta de San Juan, and organizing commercial parades. The mayor hopes these regulations will balance festive celebrations and maintain the city’s cultural integrity during the San Sebastián Street Festival.

The Municipal Permits Office will rigorously evaluate each application submitted, requiring the necessary docu-

mentation to ensure compliance with these regulations. In case of non-compliance, officials may deny the permit. In addition, officials may seek clarifications or additional information to comply with the established security and order objectives.

“These regulations are not an absolute prohibition on commercial expression, but rather a necessary and reasonable regulation to safeguard the security and orderly enjoyment of the Festivals. Our objective is that all activities are coordinated and in harmony with the civic and cultural spirit that characterizes this event,” Romero Lugo stressed.

Official sponsors of the Fiestas and Municipal contractors will be exempt from requesting permits, provided they comply with the provisions of this Ordinance, including the security measures stipulated in their contracts. All promotional material must be removed no later than 9:00 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025, to ensure the cleanliness of public spaces.

“I invite all sectors, both merchants and organizers, to work hand in hand with our team so that these Fiestas truly celebrate our culture and hospitality. With your collaboration, we will make the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián 2025 unforgettable and a model of order and cultural pride for all of Puerto Rico,” concluded Romero Lugo.

Moca falls under PDP control for first time in 36 years

fraín ‘Franco’ Barreto Barreto, a businessman and community leader, emerged victorious in the mayoral race for Moca, Puerto Rico, bringing the city under the control of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) for the first time in 36 years.

With 100% of the votes counted across the 99 electoral units in Moca, Barreto Barreto secured 45.58% of the total votes, surpassing incumbent mayor Ángel ‘Beto’ Pérez by 1,237 votes, according to the latest scrutiny votes.

Barreto Barreto, expressing his gratitude to the voters, stated, “Making history together! I am deeply thankful to each voter for their trust in me. Alongside my Municipal Assembly and work team, we pledge to serve with transparency and dedication to foster Moca’s growth and prosperity. This victory belongs to everyone!” Moca had been under the administration of the New Progressive Party (PNP) for the past 36 years before this historic shift.

The new mayor also announced that he will be sworn into office on Saturday, January 18, 2025. FOMB approves gambling machines regulations to benefit police retirement

he Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico (FOMB) has approved the implementation of the Regulation for the Issuance, Management, and Inspection of Roadside Gambling Machines.

This regulation will contribute a portion of

the generated income to the Puerto Rico Police Retirement Trust starting in 2025. The regulation, which oversees slot machines operating in businesses across the island, was developed through a collaborative effort between the Legislative Assembly, the FOMB, the Retirement Board, the Puerto Rico Police, and the gaming industry.

Interim Executive Director of the Gaming Commission, Juan Carlos Santaella Marchán, stated that the regulation ensures more secure betting practices and supports the retirement of police officers. Act 112 of 2024, signed by Governor Pedro Pierluisi in July, allocates a part of the revenue from these machines to the trust. Beginning in 2025, the Commission

will renew licenses for operators, marking the start of the fund’s revenue generation.

The new regulation will introduce advanced technology for interconnecting machines, promoting transparency in government collections and reducing licensing costs for operators implementing these technological innovations.

Governor’s campaign director offers details of inauguration ceremony

n an event classified as historic, the inauguration ceremonies for Governor Jenniffer González are set to take place on Thursday, January 2, 2025, amid a lively town festival.

Details of the inauguration activities were provided by Francisco Domenech, a member of the organizing committee and former campaign director of the governor-elect, during a press conference held at the Legislature on Sunday.

The day will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a mass at Santa Teresita Church on Loíza Street in Santurce, open to the public. Molina could face Senate challenge to his election

Former Senate President Kenneth McClintock stated that if the State Elections Commission (SEC) certifies Molina as the winner, the Senate can examine whether he was legally certified to occupy the seat. Appeals Court orders trial on case to recover waste collection funds

he Court of Appeals of Puerto Rico ordered the Court of First Instance to hold a trial to resolve the case of the Municipality of Cataño against Waste Collection Corp. and Oscar Santamaría Torres, which aims to recover over $13.4 million in public funds.

The determination, revealed last week, overturns a previous ruling that dismissed the municipal claim and allows the case to advance toward a complete evaluation in the courtroom.

The ruling, issued on December 20, 2024, underlines the high public interest in the case as it involves municipal funds

awarded through contracts with possible irregularities during the administration of former Mayor Félix “El Cano” Delgado Montalvo. According to the Court, evaluating the substantive evidence presented by the municipality is essential to determine if the funds were used fraudulently.

Initially filed in December 2021, the lawsuit seeks the return of $13.4 million, plus $250,000 in damages and $100,000 in legal fees. The municipality maintains that the contracts awarded to Waste Collection Corp. were the product of irregular practices that benefited the corporation and Santamaría Torres.

The Court of Appeals criticized the decision of the

Court of First Instance to resolve the case by summary judgment, arguing that the process did not guarantee an adequate evaluation of the evidence. The ruling states that “the public interest in using and administering municipal funds requires a full adjudication at trial.”

Cataño Mayor Julio Alicea Vasallo expressed satisfaction with the court decision. “We will continue to move forward to recover the funds that belong to the people of Cataño. This is an important step to do justice and ensure that every penny misused is returned,” he said. The case returns to the Court of First Instance, where dates will be scheduled for plenary trial, marking a new chapter in this high-profile litigation.

Guards in fatal prison assault were accused of beating inmates before

t least three of the New York state prison guards implicated in the savage beating death of a handcuffed man had been accused of participating in similar attacks on prisoners across the state.

Two of the corrections officers and a sergeant accused in the death of Robert Brooks, an inmate at the Marcy Correctional Facility in central New York, were previously named in federal lawsuits filed by prisoners accusing them of brutal attacks that left one man disfigured and another in a wheelchair.

A lawyer for one of the injured men drew a line from the earlier accusations of violence to the attack this month.

“The fact that they failed to rein in these officers that they knew had beaten someone else is a direct contributor to Mr. Brooks’ death,” said Katie Rosenfeld, the lawyer. She criticized the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision for fighting her client’s lawsuit for four years.

Letitia James, the state attorney general, on Friday released video footage of guards beating Brooks in a prison infirmary on Dec. 9. The footage, captured on body cameras worn by four of the officers, showed the guards punching, kicking and choking Brooks over roughly 20 minutes.

In a swift and rare rebuke of the guards’ actions, Daniel F. Martuscello III, the state’s corrections commissioner, vowed to address a culture of brutality that has long permeated the state’s prison system.

“It is not enough to simply condemn this horrific act and then go back to business,” he said in a statement Friday. “Institutional change must follow.”

But a spokesperson for the corrections department, when asked about earlier allegations against the officers and why the department had not acted sooner to address them, declined to comment, citing the pending investigations.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said last weekend that she was moving to fire the 13 guards and a prison nurse who had been implicated in the attack.

In the videos released Friday, Brooks is seen lying on the ground outside the prison with his hands cuffed behind his back.

He appears to have already been beaten.

The officers pick him up by his cuffed hands and hold his feet. Once inside the infirmary, officers toss him onto a gurney and take turns punching him in the head, slamming a shoe against his chest and kicking him near his genitals.

At one point, an officer, with his hand gripped around Brooks’ neck, pulls him up into a seated position and repeatedly lifts him up by his throat.

When he appears unresponsive, an officer gives Brooks a sternum rub, pressing a knuckled fist on his chest in a painful technique used by emergency service workers to try to revive unresponsive patients.

The video shows some officers walking in and out of the room, milling about in the hallway or looking on from the doorway. Some of those assaulting Brooks pause to change their gloves or wash their hands.

Years earlier, some of the same guards had meted out brutal punishment against prisoners without provocation, according to a series of lawsuits that describe assaults by the corrections staff in glaringly similar detail.

Attack in a Bathroom In February 2020, Adam Bauer was a year out from his release date when corrections officers beat him in a bathroom at the Marcy prison and then accused him of attacking them, according to an ongoing lawsuit.

Nicholas Anzalone, one of the officers accused in the assault of Brooks, joined with other officers in the attack on Bauer, the lawsuit said. On Friday, a man who answered a phone belonging to Anzalone, who joined the department in 2007, declined to comment.

“They knew about Nicholas Anzalone for many years, and they did nothing,” said Rosenfeld, Bauer’s lawyer.

Bauer said he was exiting a bathroom stall and about to light a cigarette with a battery when a guard stopped him and asked what he was doing, the lawsuit said. The officer ordered Bauer to stand against the wall for a frisk. After a few pats, the officer began punching him in the head until he fell to the floor and then kicked him, according to the lawsuit.

Two sergeants and Anzalone joined in, including one sergeant who slammed a clipboard against Bauer’s head so hard that the metal clasp tore a hole in his scalp. The guards then dragged him out of the prison, put him in a van and drove him to the infirmary, Bauer, 50, said. Once there, he was forced to lie face down on the floor as Anzalone kicked his feet, the lawsuit said.

To cover up the assault, the lawsuit contends, the officers lied. They told a nurse that he had harmed himself. They took him to a nearby hospital and told medical staff there that he had been attacked by another prisoner. One corrections employee told hospital workers that Bauer’s injuries were from “a seat belt.”

When Bauer was returned to the prison, he was thrown into solitary confinement on false disciplinary charges for 60

days until a prison official reversed the decision, according to the lawsuit.

The corrections department’s Office of Special Investigations looked into the allegations against the guards, Rosenfeld said, but ultimately found that the force was “necessary and reasonable” to get Bauer to comply. The officers, she said, were never interviewed by investigators.

“You’re in their world when you get there,” Bauer said Friday. “They do what they want.”

Permanently Disfigured That same year in September, two other guards now implicated in the beating of Brooks — Sgt. Glenn Trombly and Officer Anthony Farina — participated in an assault on a prisoner named William Alvarez, according to a lawsuit.

Alvarez was cleaning the bathroom shower area when an officer pepper-sprayed him without provocation, according to his lawsuit. Alvarez ran out into the main dorm area in sight of other prisoners, he said, but the officer ordered him into a vestibule.

As he stood with his hands on the wall, Alvarez said in his lawsuit, the officer slammed his head repeatedly against it and then cuffed him. Trombly and Farina arrived, and together the three officers kicked him in the head and body before dragging him into a van and taking him to the infirmary.

The attack continued in the van, the lawsuit said, with Farina and Trombly looking on as the other officer punched him over and over again until the van pulled up to the infirmary and Trombly said, “That’s enough.”

Alvarez, who said in the lawsuit that he is now permanently disfigured, required facial surgery.

Like Bauer, Alvarez was accused of attacking the guards and held in solitary confinement for 60 days.

Lawyers for Alvarez in the lawsuit described the attack on their client as “intentional, sadistic and malicious.”

Trombly and Farina did not respond to requests for comment.

Before Trombly was moved to the prison in Marcy, he worked at the Green Haven Correctional Facility in Stormville, New York, where three prisoners accused him of beating them.

During a frisk in June 2013, Ernest Iverson said Trombly, who was an officer at the time, whispered, “I hear you like to sue people,” before placing him in a headlock. He then lifted Iverson off the floor, swung him back and forth by his neck and struck him in his back, according to court testimony. Iverson said he planted a weapon on him.

Trombly denied the allegations and said the only force he used was to place Iverson in handcuffs. He testified that he discovered the weapon on Iverson during the search. A jury sided with the officers.

On Tuesday, before the videos of Brooks’ final moments were released publicly, the State Police filed applications seeking so-called red flag orders for Anzalone and two other officers implicated in the fatal attack, Matthew Galliher and Robert Kessler.

Such orders allow law enforcement authorities to remove guns from people believed to be a potential threat to themselves or others. A judge in Oneida County rejected the applications but ordered the State Police to conduct background checks on the officers and scheduled a hearing on the matter for Jan. 7.

Nordstrom family strikes deal to buyout namesake chain

ordstrom, one of the country’s oldest department stores, said last week that it would be taken private by its founding family and a Mexican retail business, reaching an agreement after months of speculation over a potential buyout of the business.

The company will be acquired by members of the Nordstrom family and El Puerto de Liverpool, a Mexican real estate and department store company that has owned a stake in Nordstrom since 2022. Including debt, the deal values Nordstrom at $6.25 billion, the company said in a statement.

Shareholders will receive $24.25 in cash for each share of Nordstrom common stock, the company said. That’s about 42%

higher than its closing price on March 18, when news of a potential sale was first reported, the company said. A month later, Nordstrom said it had formed a special committee of its board of directors to weigh an offer from Erik and Pete Nordstrom.

The company said Monday that it would also authorize a special dividend of up to 25 cents per share if the transaction closes.

The deal will leave the Nordstrom family with a majority ownership stake in the company, which was founded in 1901 in Seattle, the company said.

In a statement, Erik Nordstrom, CEO of the company and the fourth generation of his family to run it, noted the chain’s longevity in the retail industry.

“Today marks an exciting new chapter for the business,”

Erik Nordstrom said. “On behalf of my family, we look forward to working with our teams to ensure Nordstrom thrives long into the future.”

Department stores have struggled to find their footing as e-commerce continues to eat away at their market share. Nordstrom has fared better than its competitors, in part because of its favorable real estate and higher income clientele, but even it has faced challenges. The sale price is well below the $78 a share that Nordstrom fetched in public markets about a decade ago.

In November, the company said its net sales had expanded in the third quarter, as did its gross profit, as it was able to sell more merchandise at full price rather than having to discount it.

Its off-price Nordstrom Rack business has also been strong, nabbing a 3.9% increase in comparable sales last quarter.

Party city to close all stores by February, company says

arty City, the party supply store that has provided the glittering backdrops for generations of birthday celebrations, New Year’s Eve bashes and Super Bowl gatherings, announced just days before Christmas that it was closing its doors for good.

Party City store managers were told that stores would begin a “wind-down process” that started Friday and would last until about Feb. 28, 2025. Store managers could keep their pay and benefits until then if they wanted to keep working, according to an internal letter reviewed by The New York Times.

Store employees said they were told that all stores in the United States would close by the end of February. CNN reported news of the company’s closing Friday.

Corporate employees and workers at a distribution center were told Friday that they would be laid off that day, according to an employee who shared a video of her being laid off.

The company said in a quarterly report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it had 748 retail stores in North America. Founded in 1986 and employing more than 16,000 people, the chain party supply store sold balloons, costumes, accessories and other party goods.

It was not immediately clear how many stores would close in February. The total number of employees who were laid off Friday and how many would remain until the end of February was also not clear. Company representatives did not respond to requests for comment Friday.

The letter, on Party City Holdco letterhead, cited “inflationary pressures on costs and consumer spending” as some of the challenges that forced the company to close its doors.

Early Friday afternoon, there was still some foot traffic at the Party City on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, where employees were blowing up balloons and helping customers.

The shelves were somewhat sparse, and holiday items were being sold at a discount: Christmas items, 50% off; New Year’s items, 20% off.

Employees at the store expressed shock at the news that the stores were closing, saying they had not been told anything.

A manager declined to comment and directed questions to Party City’s corporate representatives.

The abrupt ending was in many ways a long time coming.

The New Jersey-based retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2023. It exited bankruptcy roughly one month after Barry Litwin became the struggling company’s president and CEO in August. The company’s bankruptcy canceled nearly $1 billion in debt, and it managed to keep a majority of its stores open.

Big Lots and Party City are the latest casualties of what has been a tough year for chain retailers, said Deborah Weinswig, the CEO of Coresight Research, an advisory and research firm

that specializes in retail and technology.

This year alone, U.S. retailers announced 7,327 store closures and 5,919 store openings, according to a Coresight Research report. Compared with last year, major U.S. retailers have announced nearly 58% more closures. Other chains that have closed this year include 99 Cents Only, Advance Auto Parts, American Freight and Conn’s HomePlus.

“This is the highest number of store closures seen since 2020, when the pandemic shutdown of physical stores and the resulting fallout caused mass closures,” Weinswig said.

“A lot of the store closures occurring this year are the result of companies like Shein, Temu and Amazon snapping up consumer dollars by making shopping easier and more affordable,” she said.

Despite cooling, inflation has hit consumers — even wealthier ones — hard, Weinswig said, and retailers know that their customers are looking for ways to save.

“Prices at the grocery store are still high, and across all product categories, consumers are willing to trade down to store brands or discount retailers to save money,” she said.

At the Party City in Brooklyn on Friday, Liyah Thompson, 35, said she was buying decorations for her daughter’s 13th birthday. She was surprised to learn that Party City stores were closing. Once they closed, she guessed she might shop at Target or Dollar Tree instead.

Trump’s first actions and job data to test market in January

fter closing the books on a banner year for U.S. stocks, investors expect to ride seasonal momentum into mid-January when a slew of economic data and a transition of power in Washington could send markets moving.

The S&P 500 (.SPX), rose roughly 25% in 2024 through Dec. 27, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite index <.IXIC >, which surpassed 20,000 for the first time in December, is up over 31%.

“There are concerns that maybe the first part of (next) year can involve some repositioning and reallocation of funds and those that are trading today and next week are probably just trying to get a little bit ahead of that,” said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth.

“There’s the hope that taxes and regulations will be lowered or reduced next year, that will help support corporate profits, which are what drive the market in the first place,” said Michael Rosen, chief investment officer at Angeles Investments.

Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20 could also throw the markets some curve balls. He is expected to release at least 25 executive orders in his first day on a range of issues from immigration to energy and crypto policy.

Trump has also threatened tariffs on goods from China and levies on products from both Mexico and Canada, as well as to crack down on immigration, creating costs that companies could ultimately pass on to consumers.

Anger and agony in South Korea after plane crash-lands, killing 179

T

he passenger plane with 181 people onboard skidded on the runway at a high speed and slammed into a wall before exploding into flames.

Two crew members were rescued alive from the tail of the burning plane, but over the ensuing hours on Sunday, grim news trickled out to anxious relatives at Muan International Airport, in southwestern South Korea.

By late Sunday, all of the remaining 179 people onboard were confirmed dead, making the crash of the plane — flown by the popular low-cost carrier Jeju Air — the worst aviation disaster involving a South Korean airline in nearly three decades and the worst ever on South Korean soil.

Officials were investigating what caused the plane to crash-land, including why its landing gear appeared to have malfunctioned and whether the plane had been struck by birds.

As speculation swirled about the cause of the crash, hundreds of family members of passengers endured the painful wait for news of their loved ones returning home from a trip abroad. Wails and screams filled the Muan airport on Sunday afternoon. A young woman comforted an older woman weeping about her son. Two crying women embraced each other.

By Sunday evening, only 65 of the dead could be identified through their fingerprints and other means, officials said.

A dozen bodies were so badly damaged that officials could not immediately identify their gender. Those who were identified included a 23-year-old flight attendant and a 78-year-old male passenger.

Jang Gu-ho, 68, sat stoically in the arrivals hall next to his teary-eyed wife after rushing from his home in the nearby city of Mokpo. He said five of his relatives had been on the plane returning from a vacation: his wife’s sister, her daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren.

“We’re thunderstruck,” he said.

In a closed area of the airport, officials were working to identify the bodies they recovered from the crash site. When officials posted on the walls of the arrivals hall the names of those confirmed dead, people rushed to check the lists.

The plane crash was especially shocking for the country because it has had no major aviation disaster after a spate of deadly air accidents in the 1990s and earlier. In the last major aviation accident involving a South Korean airline, a Korean Air jet slammed into a hill in Guam, a U.S. territory in the western Pacific, in 1997, killing 229 of the 254 people on board.

The crash of the Jeju Air plane on Sunday was likely the deadliest worldwide since that of Lion Air Flight 610 in 2018, when all 189 people on board died as the plane plunged into the Java Sea. It also appeared to have been the first fatal one for Jeju Air, which was established in 2005 and flies to dozens of countries in Asia. Kim E-bae, the chief executive of Jeju Air, bowed as he publicly apologized for the crash. He said that the exact cause of

the crash was unclear.

The plane, Jeju Air Flight 7C2216, a Boeing 737-800 jet, had taken off from Bangkok with 175 passengers and six crew members. All passengers were South Koreans, except for two Thai nationals. The jet was landing at Muan, in southwestern South Korea, when it ran into trouble.

Footage of the accident showed a white-and-orange plane speeding down a runway on its belly until it rammed into a barrier at the end of the runway, exploding into a fireball. Local news media cited witnesses describing the sound of the explosion and published photographs of large plumes of black smoke over the site.

The plane had broken into so many pieces that only its tail was immediately identifiable, said Lee Jeong-hyeon, an official in charge of search and rescue operations at the scene. The two crew members who survived had been rescued from the tail section.

“We could not recognize the rest of the fuselage,” Lee said.

As the death toll climbed, details of what happened in the final moments before the crash began to emerge.

As the plane was preparing to land, the airport warned the pilots about a po-

tential bird strike, said Ju Jong-wan, a director of aviation policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Around this time, witnesses heard loud explosionlike sounds, MBC-TV reported. The channel broadcast footage showing flames trailing briefly from one of the plane’s engines.

The plane issued a mayday alert shortly after the warning from the airport, then crash-landed, Ju said.

The muddy tidal flats near Muan and much of the west coast of the Korean Peninsula are favorite resting places for migrant birds. Photographs in local media showed flocks of birds flying near the airport on Sunday.

Evidence suggested that the aircraft encountered a flock of birds during its approach, leading to suspected bird ingestion into the engines, said Marco Chan, a senior lecturer in aviation operations at the U.K.-based Buckinghamshire New University.

The damage may have caused a hydraulic system failure, which could explain the inability to deploy the landing gear, Chan said in an analysis emailed by his university.

The plane also did not appear to have activated its wing flaps, said Keith Tonkin, the managing director of Aviation Projects, an aviation consulting company in Brisbane, Australia, who reviewed video of the crash. That meant it was traveling faster than normal landing speed when it belly flopped on the runway, he said.

Aviation experts said investigations into the causes of crashes can take years.

Syria’s new government steps up pursuit of Assad loyalists

yria’s new administration has stepped up its campaign to track down and arrest members of the ousted Assad dictatorship, signaling that it would act with a heavy hand against people it claims are challenging its ability to impose law and order.

Sana, the state-run Syrian news agency, reported Saturday that “a number of remnants of the Assad militias” had been arrested in the coastal Latakia region in western Syria.

Weapons and ammunitions were confiscated, the report added.

The new administration, which has tried to assert authority over Syria since an alliance of rebels toppled President Bashar Assad three weeks ago, has indicated that pursuing loyalists of the Assad dictatorship who are undermining its authority is a top priority.

But a human rights organization has raised alarms about the way the transitional government was going after Assad loyalists, saying it was carrying out arbitrary arrests of supporters of the old regime.

Over the past few days, Sana has also reported that government security forces were pursuing members of the

Assad regime in the regions of Tartus, Homs and Hama.

On Wednesday, an attempt to arrest Mohammed Kanjou al-Hassan, the former director of military justice under Assad, set off deadly clashes in the Tartus area — part of the heartland of Assad’s Alawite minority. Security forces were ambushed by loyalists of the former government in the area, according to the Britain-based war monitoring group, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Fourteen members of the government forces were killed, according to Mohammed Abdel Rahman, Syria’s interim interior minister.

While some reports have said al-Hassan was later arrested, media officials in Syria’s transitional government had not confirmed that as of Saturday, and his whereabouts remain unclear.

The media office of Syria’s interim Interior Ministry said security forces were pursuing members of the Assad regime “to secure” the country’s territory, suggesting they were undermining the security situation. It said the campaign was launched only after loyalists of the former government had failed “to hand over their weapons and settle their affairs” within a specific time frame.

Syrian officers and soldiers who served in Assad’s military after they illegally entered Lebanon on Friday, according to the Syrian Observatory.

An official in the new Syrian administration confirmed Lebanon returned military personnel from the ousted regime to Syria, without specifying a number.

Former Syrian officials and military personnel have fled Syria for neighboring Lebanon and Iraq in hopes of avoiding arrest or retribution.

Rami Abdulrahman, director of the Syrian Observatory, said he was receiving reports from his group’s activists in Syria that government security forces were carrying out random arrests of supporters of Assad’s regime, while largely failing to take action against top military leaders.

“We need transitional justice, not revenge justice,” he said in a phone interview Saturday. “The new Syria should be a state of justice, democracy, equality and law.”

The media office for the Interior Ministry pushed back against Abdulrahman’s comments, asserting that security forces had not arrested supporters of Assad’s regime but rather armed loyalists of the old government who carried out attacks against the new administration, and their accomplices.

This past week, Musk entangled himself even more in the country’s snap election, explaining in a newspaper opinion essay why he believes the far-right party is the “last spark of hope” for Germany.

“The traditional parties have failed in Germany,” Musk wrote in comments published online by the daily Welt on Saturday. “Their policies have led to economic stagnation, social unrest and the erosion of national identity.”

Musk’s opinion piece comes as Germany girds itself for an intense winter election after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party coalition collapsed in November. On Friday, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier officially announced the disbandment of parliament and set Feb. 23 as the date for new elections.

With four mainstream and three extremist parties on the left and right vying for seats in parliament and government participation, polls are favoring the conservative Christian Democratic Union. However, the AfD, with its anti-immigrant platform, is polling in second place, with roughly 20%.

Musk’s commentary was printed in the Sunday edition of the Welt, a conservative daily owned by the Axel Springer media group, which also owns Politico in the United States.

Eva Marie Kogel, who had been the paper’s head of opinion, resigned from her post after the printing, she confirmed on the social platform X. In an apparent acknowledgment that Musk’s thoughts on the AfD could be controversial, the paper printed a response

by Jan Philipp Burgard, editor-in-chief-designate on the same page.

“Musk’s diagnosis is correct, but his therapeutic ap-

proach, that only the AfD can save Germany, is fatally flawed,” he wrote.

Musk, who was heavily involved in supporting Trump in the U.S. presidential campaign, has been known to meddle in foreign political campaigns as well. He has engaged and supported right-wing causes both in Italy and the United Kingdom in recent months.

The provocative potential in Germany from Musk’s support of the AfD partly reflects the party’s political stance, considered so far right as to be anti-democratic. All other political parties in Germany have precluded working with the AfD. When news broke that members of the AfD took part in a meeting with an Austrian extreme-right personality, who has called for deporting migrants en masse, tens of thousands of Germans took to the streets in protest this year. Last spring and summer, Björn Höcke, a state leader of the party, was twice convicted of having used banned Nazi-era slogans during campaign stops. Sections of the party, including its entire youth wing, is considered extremist by domestic intelligence.

In his commentary, Musk dismissed any criticism that the party could be too far-right by pointing to the private life of the party’s lead candidate. “The portrayal of the AfD as far-right is clearly wrong considering that Alice Weidel, the leader of the party, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Come on!” he wrote.

For the AfD, the endorsement is viewed as a potential boon, even if it is too soon to tell whether Musk’s initial posting on X had an effect on the party’s polling. The party has been posting portions of the text on social media.

The surprising sexual politics of Nicole Kidman’s kinky ‘Babygirl’

t has been a ghastly year for American women — at least those of us who are not looking forward to being ruled by a claque of cartoon chauvinists — but a pretty rich year for women in the movies.

One of 2024’s biggest hits featured an unfairly maligned woman who channels her galvanic anger into a fight against fascism. (I’m talking, of course, about “Wicked.”)

Demi Moore gave a scenery-chewing performance in “The Substance,” a gruesome body horror film about the pressure on women to stay nubile. Amy Adams starred in Marielle Heller’s supernaturally inflected “Nightbitch,” in which a woman starts to go feral, perhaps literally, amid the tedium of early motherhood. Mikey Madison was incandescent as a street-smart sex worker from a post-Soviet country in “Anora,” a movie that takes the silly Cinderella fantasy behind “Pretty Woman” and explodes it.

But perhaps the most unlikely feminist film of the year is the much-hyped, extremely kinky “Babygirl,” starring Nicole Kidman, which opens Dec. 25. It’s a movie that satirizes the archetype of the girlboss but ultimately affirms it. On the cusp of our terrible new era, it felt, for all its darkness and perversity, like an artifact of a more optimistic moment, when equality seemed close enough at hand that the orgasm gap between men and women —

“Babygirl” something the movie’s director, Halina Reijn, often talks about in interviews — could be a subject of serious concern.

This wasn’t the takeaway I was anticipating going into the movie, though, in truth, I’m not sure what I was expecting. In a recent profile in The New Yorker, Reijn, a feminist, said she grew up idolizing the directors of 1980s and ’90s erotic thrillers like Adrian Lyne, the maker of “Fatal Attraction,” to which “Babygirl” has been frequently compared. That movie, about a female stalker with a shrieking biological clock, was so reactionary that it’s the centerpiece of a chapter in Susan Faludi’s book “Backlash.” Faludi quoted Lyne saying, of feminist professionals, “Sure you got your career and your success, but you are not fulfilled as a woman.”

At least on the surface, the premise of “Babygirl” seemed like one Lyne might appreciate. The film centers on Kidman’s Romy, an icy executive with an outwardly perfect life — big job, loving family, multiple homes — who suffers over her unrealized desire to be sexually dominated. It comes out at a moment of misogynist retrenchment both politically and in parts of popular culture.

(No one who read “Backlash” should be surprised by the rise of tradwives.) So despite Reijn’s politics, I wondered if her film would be an augur of a new, postfeminist Hollywood moment. It’s not. If anything, the problem with “Babygirl” — and here’s the place to stop reading if you want to avoid spoilers — is that, for all its psychodrama, it lands on a message of female empowerment that feels a little trite.

Though it’s billed as a thriller, “Babygirl” is really more of a black comedy about middle-aged self-discovery. As Reijn said when she introduced the movie at a screening this week, she was animated by a very personal question when making it: “Is it possible to love all the different layers of myself, not just the ones that I like to present to the outside world?”

Romy is a woman who tightly controls her self-presentation. She’s the CEO of a robotics company with the highly suggestive name Tensile. In bed she performs porn-

style fake orgasms for her husband. An early scene has her badgering her queer daughter to change out of her baggy clothes for a family Christmas photo. We see Romy getting Botox and standing naked in a cryotherapy chamber — a welcome acknowledgment, rare in Hollywood, that beauty, especially after a certain age, can be its own kind of grueling labor. Rehearsing a corporate presentation, she speaks of the need to “look up, smile and never show your weakness.” A media trainer corrects her, arguing that showing vulnerability can help win over an audience.

That trainer, however, doesn’t recognize just how vulnerable Romy is, both because of an unstable childhood that’s vaguely alluded to and, more urgently, because of her secret fetish, which fills her with corrosive shame. Somehow Samuel, an impudent intern played by Harris Dickinson, recognizes this in her. “I think you like to be told what to do,” he tells her in one of their first meetings. They begin a tempestuous affair in which he degrades her, and thus satisfies her, in a way that her uxorious husband does not. Especially in a post-#MeToo world, the affair could blow up her impeccable life. And there are moments when it seems that Samuel, who displays some stalkerish behavior, might try to do just that.

But Reijn, aiming to make a movie about female sexual liberation, is determined not to punish her characters for their transgressions. It’s a choice I sympathize with but one that lowers the narrative stakes a bit. Ultimately, the drama in “Babygirl” is about Romy coming to terms with her desires and integrating them into her life in a way that’s not self-destructive. At one point, a powerful man she works with who has somehow figured out her secret tries to use it to sexually harass and possibly extort her. “Don’t ever talk to me like that again,” she hisses. “If I want to be humiliated, I’m going to pay someone to do it.”

At least in the cinema, women can have it all.

Doce alcaldesas electas expresan la urgencia de esfuerzos para erradicar la violencia de género

a lucha contra la violencia de género es un tema de extrema importancia en Puerto Rico, así como la urgencia de continuar coordinando esfuerzos para educar, aplicar las leyes vigentes y trabajar en proyectos a largo plazo en beneficio de la sociedad entera. Ya en las postrimerías de este año, y en preparación para el nuevo cuatrienio 2025-2028, las doce (12) alcaldesas que juramentarán el próximo mes de enero, presentaron al país en días pasados una declaración conjunta con recomendaciones y ejemplos para atender la situación de manera efectiva.

Las primeras ejecutivas de Aguas Buenas (Karina Nieves Serrano), Barceloneta (Wanda Soler Rosario), Canóvanas (Lornna Soto Villanueva), Gurabo (Rosachely Rivera Santana), Humacao (Rosamar Trujillo Plumey), Loíza (Julia Nazario Fuentes), Morovis (Carmen Maldonado González), Naguabo (Miraidaliz Rosario Pagán, Patillas (Maritza Sánchez Neris), Ponce (Marlese Sifre Rodríguez), Salinas (Karilyn Bonilla Colón) y Vega Alta (María Vega Pagán), hicieron sus expresiones al país con el compromiso de trabajar en conjunto con la nueva administración tanto en La Fortaleza, Comisaría Residente, Senado, Cámara de Representantes, Alcaldías y todo tipo de organi-

zaciones sin fines de lucro que aporten al tema.

En conjunto señalaron que a pesar de los avances en las últimas décadas, las mujeres siguen enfrentando grandes retos: violencia de género y feminicidios, brecha salarial, desafíos en derechos reproductivos, presión social, pobreza desproporcionada con relación a los hombres y representación desigual en la política. Cada una de las alcaldesas se comprometieron a atender de manera prioritaria dichos temas en sus respectivos municipios, a la vez que se insertan en los temas que atañen a las mujeres de manera colectiva.

De igual manera, buscarán amplificar las voces de las mujeres en estos temas, donde insisten en que son luchas que tienen que incluir a los hombres, para que las mujeres sean tratadas como iguales, porque ambas voces son importantes. Aseguraron la lucha contra la violencia de género no es única o particular de mujeres, debe ser de todas y todos en la sociedad. Añadieron que se hacen eco de las expresiones de la gobernadora electa, Jeniffer González Colón, ante la necesidad de nombrar una directora en la Procuraduría de las Mujeres, y trabajar el tema de violencia desde las escuelas con un currículo que enfatice el valor fundamental del respeto entre todos los seres humanos, y en donde se creen espacios en donde se promueva la paz y sana convivencia.

Señalaron que la gobernadora electa puede contar con cada una de ellas para trabajar en proyectos y programas que atiendan todos los temas prioritarios para las mujeres.

La Casa Histórica de la Música en Cayey invita a su despedida del año E l alcalde de Cayey, Rolando Ortiz Velázquez, informó que mañana martes, 31 de diciembre de 2024, la Casa Histórica de la Música, localizada frente a la plaza pública Ramón Frade León, celebrará la tradicional despedida de año con todos los que asistan dicha sede cultural municipal, sin costo.

“Como sucede todos los fines de semana, nuestra Casa Histórica de la Música tendrá la asistencia de los músicos, cantantes y entusiastas que se reunirán para compartir en familia las últimas horas del 2024, y darle la bienvenida al 2025. Los que quieran participar, lleguen con sus silbatos, gorros y atuendo de celebración”, señaló el alcalde.

La icónica casa cayeyana es particularmente reconocida en estos días por haber sido escenario de una de las estampas del especial navideño del Banco Popular de Puerto Rico. La edificación data de 1825 fue rescatada por la administración de Ortiz Velázquez. Posteriormente fue concedida a una organización sin fines de lucro que en el 2013 buscaba un

espacio para documentar la historia de los músicos cayeyanos.

“Allí atesoramos la historia del reconocido trompetista, arreglista y compositor, César Concepción; al igual que el polifacético Perín Vázquez, quien escribió más de 30 éxitos popularizados por El Gran Combo, como Azuquita pa’l café y El Menú, así como memorabilia de otros artistas cayeyanos, cuyas fotos revisten las paredes del primer nivel”, añadió el alcalde.

Como es de esperarse, allí también se honra a la mundialmente conocida Tuna de Cayey que nació en 1964. Su fundador se llamaba Juan Ángel Nogueras que escribió diferentes canciones como El Sopón, así como Herminio de Jesús, que su primera experiencia musical fue con la Tuna de Cayey en 1964.

En el área de la música urbana también hay piezas relacionadas a Wisin y Yandel que son de Cayey.

Best jazz albums of 2024

n 2024, jazz continued to spiral out, looking both forward and backward and expanding to mingle with adjacent styles. The year’s most memorable releases in the genre are diverse, but they all share one key trait: a delight in intimate, real-time musical conversation.

1. Tarbaby, ‘You Think This America’ Pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Nasheet Waits have each been indispensable to 21st-century jazz, both as bandleaders and sidemen. But despite a near20-year history, their collective trio, Tarbaby, has flown under the radar. With “You Think This America,” the first Tarbaby album without any additional musicians, they stake their claim as an elite group capable of conveying the most guileless tenderness (on a version of the Stylistics’ “Betcha by Golly, Wow”), the deepest blues feeling (on the 1920s standard “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out”) and the hippest sort of post-bop looseness (on the Evans original “Red Door”). They did it all while cultivating a refreshingly non-hierarchical approach, where moment to moment each member has an equal sonic stake.

2. David Murray Quartet, ‘Francesca’ Even when David Murray first arrived in New York around 50 years ago as an upstart saxophonist and bandleader, he seemed like an old soul, communing with the roots of jazz while thriving on its cutting edge. So he’s a natural fit for the elder-statesman role he plays on “Francesca,” alongside three outstanding younger musicians — pianist Marta Sánchez, bassist Luke Stewart and drummer Russell Carter — who seem intuitively connected to his love of vigorous swing and grittily exuberant improv. The results feel like quintessential Murray, whether on the swaggering, extroverted “Am Gone Get Some” or the title track, a waltz that starts off restrained but soon bursts with emotion.

3. Tyshawn Sorey Trio, ‘The Susceptible Now’ Tyshawn Sorey’s current working group — featuring pianist Aaron Diehl and bassist Harish Raghavan — might seem like one of the most straightforward projects yet from the drummer-composer, a trailblazer in the jazz and classical avant-gardes. But on the trio’s quietly stunning third album, a series of extended and reimagined covers that pull you in with a tractor-beam intensity, Sorey’s love of Morton Feldman’s radical sparseness is just as evident as his appreciation for the classic piano-bass-drums format, which has rarely felt so patient or enveloping.

4. Louis Hayes, ‘Artform Revisited’ A prime pleasure this year was hearing Louis Hayes — a working drummer for around 70 years, who helped lay the foundations for hard bop through his early work with Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderley and others — dig into “G,” the slow blues that ends “Artform Revisited,” the latest in a string of albums he has released as a bandleader stretching back to 1960. Throughout this record, a tribute to the golden age of bebop featuring a sharp intergenerational cast, Hayes’ loose yet insistent ride-cymbal beat acts as a red carpet, ushering the listener back to an earlier era in style.

5. The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis, ‘The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis’ In a post-Nels Cline world, it’s not so uncommon to find a guitarist equally versed in jazz and punk rock. But few bridge those worlds as gracefully as Anthony Pirog, who acts as the fulcrum in this trio-plus-one formation uniting the Messthetics — his group with Joe Lally and Brendan Canty, the rhythm section of Fugazi — with James Brandon Lewis, the consistently riveting saxophonist. The alliance feels natural and unfussy, marked by sturdily memorable compositions and inspired, often incendiary improvising.

6. Patricia Brennan Septet, ‘Breaking Stretch’ Across three albums in four years, vibraphonist Patricia Brennan has built up her sound from a sparse and reflective solo statement to a teeming sonic metropolis. Her latest is a septet effort that’s as challenging as it is danceable, recalling the fantastical constructions of big thinkers such as Henry Threadgill and Steve Lehman as it interweaves dazzling ensemble passages with bracing solos from the leader, saxophonists Mark Shim and Jon Irabagon, and trumpeter Adam O’Farrill.

7. Luke Stewart Silt Trio, ‘Unknown Rivers’ Stewart is the bedrock of a new wave of jazz, anchoring powerhouse collectives like Irreversible Entanglements along with the stellar Murray outfit above. On the third album from the bassist’s Silt Trio, he steers the music from groove to abstraction and back, inciting fierce yet lyrical statements from the underrated tenor saxophonist Brian Settles.

8. Frank London / The Elders, ‘Spirit Stronger Than Blood’ One of several albums released this year by Frank London — a veteran trumpeter adept at klezmer, jazz and all manner of brass music — “Spirit Stronger Than Blood” addresses personal hardship: the eclectic trumpeter’s ongoing battle with the rare blood cancer myelofibrosis. Never maudlin, the record brims with feeling and conviction, encompassing laid-back swing, roof-raising vamps and achingly poignant balladry.

9. Melissa Aldana, ‘Echoes of the Inner Prophet’ In a year of powerful statements by saxophonists from multiple generations, the latest from Melissa Aldana stands out thanks to the harmonious mesh of a few key elements: ambitious yet approachable writing; a distinctive band texture featuring the guitar of Lage Lund (also the album’s coproducer) and the piano of Fabian Almazan; and the leader’s remarkable tenor sound, smoky yet quicksilver fluid.

10. Isaiah Collier & the Chosen Few, ‘The Almighty’ It’s been around a decade since Kamasi Washington helped reignite interest in the beseeching tones and solemn messaging of 1960s spiritual jazz. And while that term has devolved from touchstone to buzzword, the first of two albums this year by rising Chicago saxophonist Isaiah Collier and his band the Chosen Few showed how the aesthetic it connotes can still thrill. On a pair of marathon tracks here, he summons awe-inspiring fervor, propelled by the white-water Orrin Evans performs in New York, Sept. 3, 2013. Evans’s explosions of drummer Michael Shekwoaga Ode; elsewhere original “Red Door” appears on the trio Tarbaby’s latest al- he joins forces with the hometown elders Dee Alexander bum, a record made with no additional featured musicians. Oh, the places we went!

ach January, The New York Times Travel section offers a list of “52 Places to Go” in the coming year, filled with recommendations for destinations that we think are prime to be visited. Our choices are meant to be an inspiration for travelers — and dreamers — not a checklist to be ticked off. With next year’s list almost ready to go, here’s a look at how Times writers and photographers covered some of the places we showcased on our 2024 list when they visited them this year.

1. The Path of Totality The path of April’s total solar eclipse was our No. 1 pick for 2024, encompassing an area that extended “from the beaches of Mazatlán, Mexico, to the rugged coves of Maberly, Newfoundland.” The day turned into perhaps the biggest travel event of the year, with millions of people heading to a roughly 110-mile-wide belt across North America, often ending up in smaller cities that happened to be in the path. Hertz said car reservations

jumped 3,000% over the previous year, and Airbnb reported a 1,000% increase in searches for listings. The traffic afterward: a nightmare.

Reporters and photographers from the Times were there to document the minutes of totality and the surrounding hoopla. If you missed it, or the experience turned you into an eclipse chaser, your next chance is in 2026.

2. Paris Paris, already one of the most visited cities in the world, made our list for a confluence of noteworthy events: the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games; the 150th anniversary of the first impressionist exhibition (an occasion shared with Normandy); and the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, ravaged by fire in 2019. The city promised to use some of its most famous sites as a backdrop for the Olympics, including an opening ceremony spread throughout the city and swimming events in the Seine, and delivered. We offered help in navigating the Games (including bakeries at which to fuel up), and capping off the year, Notre Dame reopened as planned.

Breaking’s big year that wasn’t

K

en Swift has never dribbled a basketball to a beat. Growing up in the Bronx, the northernmost borough of New York City, he never darted for touchdowns while music thumped. Back then, in the late 1970s, sports plugged an important desire for sweat and competition.

Breaking filled a larger, more meaningful one.

“Sports have a structure,” Swift said during a recent phone interview. “Breaking, because it was new and just born, there was so much freedom to it. You could give things your own name on it. You could exist in a community and build your reputation and get props.”

Swift is one of breaking’s bricklayers.

As a member of the Rock Steady Crew, he was an innovator, inventing many of the moves that are touchstones of the new dance that was born as hip-hop emerged from New York City half a century ago.

He was clear-eyed over the decades as breaking made its way from those streets all the way to the Olympic Games in Paris this summer. Is it one of hip-hop’s foundational elements? Indisputably. A valued form of expression? Indeed. An art form? Absolutely.

A sport? Never.

His stance appears to be validated after breaking’s inclusion at the Games, a grandopening, grand-closing moment for hip-hop.

Beyond music insiders or Olympic aficionados, most people would struggle to recall that Canada’s Philip Kim captured breaking’s B-boy gold medal or that Japan’s Ami Yuasa triumphed among B-girls.

Instead, the lasting impression of breaking’s Olympics moment came courtesy of a whimsical performance by Australia’s Rachael Gunn, known as B-girl Raygun.

She flopped, jerked and sprawled during her

Paris rounds. At one point, she mimicked a hopping kangaroo, creating one of the lasting images of the Games. She scored zero points.

The showing spurred late-night jokes, countless memes, inspiration for Halloween costumes and an interception celebration.

Conspiracy theories about how Gunn qualified for the Olympics spread as quickly as the memes. A Change.org petition argued that she manipulated the process to make the Olympics. The Australian Olympic Committee was forced to publicly defend the process that resulted in Gunn qualifying for Paris.

Gunn, a university lecturer at Macquarie University Faculty of Arts in Sydney, described the criticism she received during a post-Olympics interview with Australia’s Channel 10 TV. “It was really sad how much hate that it did evoke,” she said. “And a lot of the responses is also just due to people not being very familiar with breaking and the diversity of approaches in breaking.”

Michael Holman is familiar. He envisioned breaking as an Olympic sport 40 years ago. The founder of the influential New York City Breakers, he submitted a proclamation for breaking’s inclusion in the Olympics before the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. He imagined the merging of the dance’s athletic nature and artistry as a natural fit.

As the 2024 Games approached, Holman debated with Swift, his longtime friend, about whether breaking’s big moment on the international stage would be a success.

Holman felt good; Swift was pessimistic.

Now, months after witnessing what happened, Holman concedes that Swift may have been right. Holman’s disappointment oozed through during a phone interview.

“I wish Raygun, when she did that silly thing and that mockery, at least had done it for a cause, to bring attention to something,” he added. “It was performance art for one person, and it was a real slap in the face.”

The late-night hosts had mostly moved on by September, when the World DanceSport Federation, breaking’s governing body, announced its post-Olympic rankings.

Somehow, Raygun outpaced all other B-girls; she was the No. 1 breaker in the world. The list included events over the previous year. Olympic qualifying events and the Olympics themselves did not factor into the statistics. So Raygun’s blank Olympic scores did not affect her world standing.

Breaking has evolved greatly since Swift spun on cardboard in upper Manhattan and the Bronx. Today’s B-boys and Bgirls are more diverse, athletic and powerful than ever.

Dominika Banevic, a 17-year-old Lithuanian known as B-Girl Nicka, won a silver medal with an eye-popping array of moves. Victor Montalvo, a second-generation breaker known as B-Boy Victor, won a bronze medal for the United States with a dynamic performance.

The variety and depth of talent dis-

played in Paris would not have been possible without the reach and expansion of hip-hop first imagined by New York kids like Swift.

“All that got overlooked, and we got laughed at,” Swift said. “Like in the ’80s, they laughed at it. ‘Oh, look at the Black and Latino kids bouncing around. It’s not a dance.’ Until we really grasped the situation and stand up for it, it’s going to continue.”

He isn’t condemning Raygun. Breaking is an expression of individualism, an explosion of personality. She, Swift said, rightly expressed hers.

Each country’s Olympic hosting organization committee dreams up its own vision. In 2028, Los Angeles will host the Olympics for the first time since Holman imagined breaking as a sport.

The 2028 program will feature sports like lacrosse, cricket, squash and flag football. Breaking will not be included, despite the city’s rich hip-hop history. The decision was made far before Raygun’s arrival on the international stage.

Some bemoan that rap, a component of hip-hop, turned overly commercial on its march toward extreme popularity. Swift hopes the same does not occur with breaking.

“We’re making the same mistakes in our culture,” he said. “We’re allowing the appropriation, the exportation. We’re trying to fix it for everybody else except for ourselves.”
