House kicks off 20th Legislative Assembly on Monday

The island House of Representatives begins the work of the first regular session of the 20th Legislative Assembly with the traditional inaugural session next Monday starting at 1 p.m.

The announcement was made by the incoming deputy speakers of the lower chamber, Yashira Lebrón Rodríguez and Angel Peña Ramírez, along with District 11 (Dorado, Vega Alta and Vega Baja) Rep. Elinette González Aguayo.

According to the legislative protocol for this type of session, the acting speaker of the House of Representatives and current secretary of the lower chamber, Javier Gómez Cruz, will open the proceedings, which will include the invocation, which will be led by Mizraim Esquilín García, pastor of the AMEC House of Praise Church. Then the official anthems of Puerto Rico and the United States will be performed by young singer Jeyshangelise García Pérez.

The official work of the 20th House of Representatives

will begin with the nomination process for the leadership of the legislative body, including the speaker, deputy speakers and spokespersons.

Rep. Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez was selected by the majority delegation to serve as Speaker. Lebrón, who represents District 8 of Bayamón, and Peña, representing District 33, which includes the municipalities of Las Piedras, Juncos and San Lorenzo, will serve as deputy speakers.

Puerto Rico Supreme Court Justices, as well as numerous mayors, government officials and community leaders, among others, will be part of the attendees at the inaugural session of the oldest legislative body in Puerto Rico, which was created on Nov. 25, 1897 under the Spanish regime. At the conclusion of the nomination process, the new speaker will deliver a message.

The entire ceremony will be broadcast live and free of charge through the House of Representatives’ official Facebook page.

Rep. Parés Otero hails naming of Colón Ortiz as ‘energy czar’

District 4 (San Juan) Rep. Víctor Parés Otero endorsed the appointment of engineer Josué Colón Ortiz as “energy czar” this week and announced that he will work hand in hand with the official to expedite the reconstruction of the island’s electrical infrastructure, including the generation component.

“The appointment of engineer Josué Colón was a good one,” the New Progressive Party lawmaker said. ”His detailed knowledge of how the electrical system operates, including the transmission and distribution components, as well as the generation components, provides an accurate supervision of the administration of these platforms by private operators. In addition, he knows the permit process with federal agencies to meet the needs of the electrical system.”

“From the House of Representatives we are going to work hand in hand with engineer Josué Colón, with whom we have had excellent communication for years and who speaks the same language related to the electrical system,” added Parés, who is also a member of the Energy Transformation Committee created by Gov. Jenniffer González Colón. “We will be scheduling a meeting with the new czar as soon as possible to discuss how we can support his efforts and what legislation is needed to make the energy

transformation a reality, accelerate reconstruction and [facilitate] the creation of a backup system.”

On Wednesday, the governor appointed Colón Ortiz, who headed the Electric Power Authority, to the pending new Cabinet-level post. He was also named the executive director of the Public-Private Partnerships Authority.

“I congratulate you. I feel like it’s happening to me,” Parés said. “You are an excellent resource and I am so happy that all those tremendous qualities you have are recognized.”

Governor: Any agency chief who doesn’t meet metrics will leave

Although the appointment process has not yet been completed, Gov. Jenniffer González Colón said Thursday that if heads of agencies are not up to par, they will be dismissed.

“For me, more important than a title, will be people who solve problems for the people, people who get the government moving and that we don’t waste time in bureaucracy or ‘call me on Monday, we’ll check, we’re working or give me a break,’ none of that,” the governor said at a press conference. “Here we have to solve problems for the people. My vision from day one was a government that solves problems for the people, a government that takes care of them and that has the sensitivity to do so.”

“For me, more important than a title, will be people who solve problems for the people, people who get the government moving and that we don’t waste time in bureaucracy ...” Gov. Jenniffer González Colón said.

“That’s why the people I’m looking for and all of them are going to the Senate consent council, but you know what?

I’m going to be evaluating that agency head all the time and whoever can’t comply with the things we’re assigning will be removed and someone else will be appointed,” González Colón added. “I don’t have time to waste and I’m not going to leave in a secretary, even if he has been appointed, because he is already there. No, no, no, no, we all have to have metrics. I impose metrics on myself, because I’m going to do the same with my agency chiefs.”

Her statements were made during a fifth round of appointments on Thursday to lead the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, the Department of Consumer Affairs, the Family Socioeconomic Development Administration and the 911 Emergency System Bureau (see related story on this page)

It is expected that on Friday the appointment for Agriculture Department secretary will be presented, among others.

Governor appoints heads of DNER, DACO, ADSEF & 911 bureau

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón announced on Thursday new appointments to key positions in her administration, including the secretaries of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) and the Department of Consumer Affairs (DACO by its acronym in Spanish), as well as the heads of the Family Socioeconomic Development Administration (ADSEF) and the 911 Emergency System Bureau.

Waldemar Quiles, the retired U.S. Army major named as DNER secretary, has more than three decades of experience in civil engineering and resource management, and has worked on major projects such as

the Bechara Canal and the Portugués Dam in Ponce.

“His leadership in disaster management and recovery projects will be critical to our environmental agenda,” the governor said.

Natalia Catoni, who will assume the position of DACO secretary, possesses experience in managing federal funds, public finances and business development, and has worked in local agencies and international organizations such as the World Bank.

“Natalia knows the difficulties faced by consumers and entrepreneurs in Puerto Rico, and I am sure that her experience will be key to protecting consumer rights,” González Colón said.

Ramón Burgos Bermúdez will assume the post of ADSEF administrator with legislative

experience as well as executive branch experience in the Family Department, Burgos has led initiatives such as drafting laws for

child protection and services for the elderly. The governor highlighted his commitment to Puerto Rican families and his track record on social policies.

José Ángel Reyes Cañada, appointed as commissioner of the 911 Emergency System Bureau, brings over 37 years of experience in public safety and emergency management, Reyes has played key roles in municipalities and state agencies.

“His knowledge and experience will be essential to guarantee the effectiveness of our emergency system,” González Colón said.

The governor noted that the appointments reflect her commitment to socioeconomic development, environmental protection and the improvement of public services in Puerto Rico.

Newly sworn-in Sen. Molina apologizes to press for past ‘friction’

Sen. Eliezer Molina Pérez apologized to the press on Thursday for friction generated in the past and reaffirmed his commitment to working with journalists and cameramen in his legislative role.

“Today the country is experiencing a historic moment and I am going to speak directly to the press,” Molina said during a meeting with journalists after his swearing-in. “If at any time tempers flared or there was some kind of friction, I apologize. That was part of my role, but now it is changing a bit. Never hesitate to

call us, the office is for you.”

The senator took the opportunity to criticize Gov. Jenniffer González Colón for recent comments directed at journalistValeria Collazo Cañizares.

“Yesterday we saw the governor’s inappropriate comments against one of your colleagues, demonstrating a totalitarianism where it seems she has not understood the rules of the game,” he said. “Today the press is beginning to see the attitudes of those who said they were the good guys.”

During an interview with González Colón on Wednesday evening on the Telemundo pro-

gram “Rayos X,” Collazo Cañizares addressed the alleged illegal construction at the governor’s in-laws’ house in Lajas’ seaside La Parguera sector. The journalist said later on social media that it was one of two questions with which the governor “expressed disagreement.”

Molina also questioned González Colón’s statements on environmental issues in La Parguera, pointing out the aforementioned alleged environmental crimes.

“You are wrong,” he said. “There was a demonstrated environmental crime there, and because you won and they are your in-laws, it does not mean that there will be impunity.

This country is tired of impunity.”

The new senator also pointed out situations that he considers examples of political persecution.

Molina then offered a message to Capitol workers and Senate security, acknowledging that past tensions were part of his duties. He stressed that his office in the Senate Annex will be open to address concerns from journalists and citizens.

“Ninety-two years ago, Don Pedro Albizu Campos showed me the way,” he said. “If there is one thing we are going to give back to this country, it is justice and respect.”

Health warns about increasing influenza, dengue and COVID-19 cases

The island Department of Health provided updates Thursday on the epidemiological surveillance of influenza, dengue and COVID-19, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures to reduce their spread.

Melissa Marzán Rodríguez, the agency’s chief epidemiology officer, reported that the Epidemiology and Research Division continues to closely monitor the aforementioned diseases affecting the population.

During the 2024-2025 influenza season, which began on June 30, 2024, and will continue until late June of this year, there has been an increase in cases, with a cumulative total of 20,781 reported. Of that number, 1,850 cases were confirmed in the last full week of December (Dec. 22-28, 2024).

“Influenza type A accounts for 87% of confirmed cases,” Marzán Rodríguez said.

She noted that while the number of cases is nearing the alert threshold, it remains below the epidemic level. The regions most affected

include Caguas, San Juan Metro and Ponce. Additionally, 24 new hospitalizations were reported, bringing the total to 933 for the season.

Regarding COVID-19, the latest data from Dec. 22-28 indicate that the positivity rate has remained stable at 4.14%, with Arecibo reporting the highest positivity rate. Hospitalizations for COVID-19 are currently at low levels.

Designated Health Secretary Víctor M.

Ramos Otero urged citizens to take precautionary measures.

“The symptoms of influenza and COVID-19 are similar and can be confusing,” he said. “I encourage anyone experiencing these symptoms to visit their doctor. It is also crucial to practice hygiene measures, such as washing hands frequently and covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing. By doing so, we can help contain these respiratory viruses and protect our loved ones from infection.”

Ramos Otero also emphasized that vaccination remains a key component of the prevention strategy. For information on the nearest vaccination center or to arrange home vaccination for individuals with mobility issues, citizens can call 787522-3985.

Another disease present on the island is dengue, which is transmitted by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito. Dengue continues to pose a public health challenge in Puerto Rico, with 117 new cases reported for the week of Dec 16-22, raising

the cumulative total to 5,913 cases in 2024. The epidemic has exceeded the epidemic threshold for 49 consecutive weeks, leading to an extension of that classification until March 31. The municipalities most affected include San Juan, Carolina and Rincón, with the age group most affected being 40 to 59 years old. So far, there have been 12 reported deaths on the island associated with dengue, and one case is still under investigation.

“Preventing dengue requires a community effort. We urge families to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and protect themselves with approved repellents, especially during this high transmission season,” Marzán Rodríguez said. She also recommended wearing longsleeved shirts and long pants when traveling. Symptoms of dengue can include fever, muscle and joint pain, headache, rash, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, and pain behind the eyes.

“If you experience these symptoms, please visit a healthcare provider, as they can quickly progress to severe dengue, which can have serious consequences,” the epidemiologist said.

Freshman US lawmaker from Colorado to chair subpanel overseeing Puerto Rico

U.S. Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-Colo.) has been selected as the new chairman of the House subcommittee overseeing Puerto Rico.

The 45-year-old freshman lawmaker from Grand Junction, who represents Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District after four years of representation by U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, will chair the Subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs, which is part of the House Committee on Natural Resources.

Hurd has reportedly said that in Congress he will work to secure the border, grow the energy economy in Colorado’s 3rd District,

and protect the state’s water and agricultural resources.

He worked for Sullivan & Cromwell LLP (S&C), an international law firm that has advised clients in Puerto Rico on a variety of matters, including credit leveraged finance, airports and environmental transactions.

For instance, S&C advised the U.S. Department of Energy on a loan guarantee to finance solar energy projects in Puerto Rico.

Also, S&C represented a consortium in the bid for a long-term concession at Luis Muñoz Marín Airport in San Juan years ago.

“Notably, Chair Hurd clerked for the chief judge of the 10th Circuit & worked at Sullivan & Cromwell. He’ll have no problem

comprehending the Prepa (Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority) litigation mess,” noted Cate Long, who leads a research service for Puerto Rico bondholders.

The PREPA bankruptcy has been in a stalemate for over a year as certain bondholders and the utility have failed to reach a settlement over the utility’s $9 billion debt. The case mediators on Thursday reported that they spent only 20 hours in mediation over the past month.

In the area of energy, Hurd “supports the responsible development of energy resources” in his home state, including “some of the cleanest oil and natural gas molecules in the world,” according to his campaign website. U.S. Rep.

Uber, San Juan create pick-up/drop-off area for Sanse Festival

Uber and the Municipality of San Juan will establish an exclusive pick-up and drop-off area in the Escambrón parking lot during the San Sebastián Street Festival, from Thursday, Jan. 16 to Sunday,

Jan. 19, to speed up mobility.

“The integration of technology and urban planning transformed mobility in Sanse,” said Carolina Coto, communications manager for Uber in Central America and the Caribbean, in a written statement.

“This space will be key for an event of this magnitude.”

The area will have trained personnel, exclusive lanes for driver partners, and signage to facilitate vehicular flow. It will operate from Thursday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m., and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.

“This alliance strengthens logistics for the Festival,” San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero said. “Last year we demonstrated that an organized system is vital for the enjoyment and safety of visitors.”

Uber mobilized more than 14,000 people during last year’s festivities. Additional details are available at www.uber.com.

Firefighters rush to take control of Los Angeles wildfires as winds slow

Officials in Los Angeles hoped that a drop in wind speeds Thursday would open a window for firefighters to take control of the fast-moving blazes that have raged unchecked this week and erased entire neighborhoods. But those officials added that there was still an extreme risk for current fires to spread and for other fires to break out, worsening a devastating situation that has displaced tens of thousands of people and traumatized countless more.

Almost 180,000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders, and at least five people have died in the fires that have burned about 29,000 acres, equivalent to roughly 22,000 football fields. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said some areas “look like a bomb was dropped in them” and that “I think the death toll will rise.”

One of the fires — the Palisades fire, in one of the city’s most affluent neighborhoods — has damaged or destroyed thousands of buildings and has torched more than 17,200 acres, making it “one of the most destructive natural disasters in the history of Los Angeles,” said Kristin M. Crowley, Los Angeles Fire Department chief.

Despite the subsiding winds, the firestorms continued to consume buildings and turn them into barren swaths of rubble and ashes, even as helicopters and planes dropped water from an ominous orange sky and firefighters battled on the ground with a new supply of water after hydrants ran dry in previous days.

The break in the high winds will be short, forecasters said, with dangerous gusts expected to return late Thursday. They are not expected to be as strong as the gusts were Wednesday, but forecasters said critical fire weather conditions were likely to remain Thursday.

Here’s what else to know:

— Latest forecast: Forecasters warned that moderate to strong Santa Ana winds were expected to pick up Thursday night, with wind speeds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 60 mph. Heavy winds could arrive again over the weekend and possibly next week.

— Psychological toll: Some mental health experts say that survivors of a wildfire, particularly those who have lost their homes, are at risk of deep, long-lasting mental health ramifications.

— On the ground: The fires have torn through communities of every socioeconomic status and stripe, affecting mansions as well as ’70s town houses, ranches and subdivisions. Residents are overwhelmed by the pervasiveness and see themselves as being stuck in the middle of a mega-catastrophe.

— More cancellations: The Los Angeles Lakers postponed their NBA game Thursday night against the Charlotte Hornets, saying in a statement that they would reschedule so people could “focus on what matters most today.” The team’s head coach, JJ Redick, was forced to flee his home in Pacific Palisades, a neighborhood razed by the wildfires.

— Damage estimates: The economic cost of the fires could exceed $50 billion, and California’s insurance industry could take a massive hit in an already unstable market. Insurers there are already struggling to find their footing after previous wildfires crushed their profits.

— Climate context: Santa Ana winds are notorious for spreading wildfire, and they often occur in colder months. By January, though, their impacts are usually less dramatic, as the landscape is typically less flammable after rains in the fall and early winter. But this year, the rains have not come, leaving most of Southern California extremely dry. Scientists have also found that fires across the region have become faster-moving in recent decades.

‘It

was biblical’: Ash and flame upend life in Southern California

It has long been a local article of faith: Southern California disasters are rarely as big as they seem.

Delaware and Rhode Island could fit, with room to spare, in Los Angeles County. A drive from Pacific Palisades to Pasadena takes nearly an hour, even without traffic. When the Los Angeles riots erupted in 1992, Americans recoiled at the fires silhouetting the downtown skyline. Not shown were the jacaranda-lined streets and placid suburbs where the rest of Southern California watched the mayhem on TV.

This time, it was different.

In a furious assault that began Tuesday morning and continued into Wednesday night, a wind-and-wildfire monster attacked a metropolis of 4,753 miles and nearly 10 million people, whipping up flames that tore through communities of every socioeconomic status and stripe.

Mansions were reduced to ash in Pacific Palisades, a West Los Angeles celebrity enclave. Subdivisions burned to the ground 35 miles to the east in the tidy suburb of Altadena. Ranch hands in rural Sylmar, 25 miles to the north, fled into the fiery night, leading horses. New homeowners in freshly built developments hours away in inland communities such as Pomona braced for evacuations as 59-mph winds rattled the windowpanes and palm trees.

As of late Wednesday, the fires had claimed at least five lives and destroyed more than 1,000 buildings, with more damage expected as the wind intensified with nightfall. A new fire in the evening had engulfed part of Hollywood Hills. More than 80,000 people were under evacuation orders.

It wasn’t just that the place was in flames. It was that it seemed to be in flames everywhere at once, as a barrage of separate wildfire events erupted in population centers across the region, each spawning its own constellation of spot fires from wind-driven embers. Psychically if not physically, they merged into a kind of mega-catastrophe for Southern Californians. Ash, smoke, wind and flames carried the heart-stinging realization, which spread like a contagion, that a new and less manageable landscape was on the horizon.

“The only thing I can think of that would compare with this would be a mas-

sive earthquake,” said Zev Yaroslavsky, 76, who served for decades in Los Angeles as a City Council member and county supervisor. “Except that earthquakes have an epicenter.”

He paused to cough, hoarse from the smoke that has blanketed the region. “This thing is all over the place,” he said. “It’s impacting everybody who breathes the air. When I went to get the paper this morning, a big black cloud hung over the city from the Eaton fire. It was biblical.”

To outsiders, Los Angeles can come off as a faceless sprawl filled with artifice and isolation. But those who live there discover that every neighborhood and every backyard is its own universe. Each hub of the region has its own character, cuisine, vernacular, soul and landmarks.

The fire in Pacific Palisades took with it not only the homes of famous people — “One day you’re swimming in the pool and the next day it’s all gone,” actor James Woods told CNN, weeping — but also the infrastructure of a small town with a population roughly the size of Pottstown, Pennsylvania.

The Palisades has a median household income of $155,433, nearly double that of Los Angeles County, according to city and census data that includes nearby Brentwood. The house where the first flames were reported has an estimated value — midrange for the community — of about $4.5 million. Far pricier properties, famously, rise into the hillsides, owned by family-friendly moguls

including Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Sugar Ray Leonard’s estate is on the market for just under $40 million.

But many of the homes that burned were in a part of town known as the Highlands, where town houses built in the 1970s and ’80s have long offered a more affordable option for retirees and single parents. There are longtime denizens who have lived in the Palisades for decades, having bought low years ago in a gem of a place that was more coastal than Beverly Hills and less rustic than nearby Malibu or Topanga Canyon. As firefighters struggled to save the central business district and the local school buildings, generations of “Pali High” graduates frantically begged them to save the site of their teenage memories.

The communities around Eaton Canyon, an hour’s drive to the east, make up another Southern California entirely. Anchored by Pasadena, which has a population of more than 133,000, the area is a majority-minority magnet for the middle and upper-middle class of the region. Altadena, the unincorporated community closest to the fire, is known for its rambling ranch houses and neat bungalows that hug the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

People hike in the canyon on weekends and debate the relative merits of droughttolerant landscaping and rose gardens. Christmas decorations are a competitive sport. The splendor of the Angeles National Forest is a local respite. And the threat of wildfire is a constant.

“This is my fourth fire and the only time we’ve ever left,” said Muffie Alejandro, 74, the owner of a manufacturing company who has lived near Eaton Canyon since 1989. Tuesday, she evacuated to a hotel with her husband, Jan, and her dogs, Mingus and Clinton. “This is the worst I’ve ever seen,” she said.

Sylmar is yet another Los Angeles, remote and rugged, far to the north in the San Fernando Valley, an arid swath of ranches and working-class suburbs once known for its groves of olive trees. Its population is about 80,000, and three-quarters Latino. The terminus of the Los Angeles Aqueduct system is there, as is the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center.

It burns regularly, too. One wildfire, in 2008, destroyed nearly 500 houses. El Cariso Community Regional Park, a local landmark, is dedicated to fire crews who died in a 1966 blaze.

This week, those distinct versions of paradise became one, united in terror.

Port strike averted with labor deal days before deadline

Dockworkers on the East and Gulf Coasts reached a tentative labor agreement with employers earlier this week, averting a strike that could have hammered the economy days before President-elect Donald Trump took office.

The International Longshoremen’s Association, the dockworkers’ union, and the U.S. Maritime Alliance, the employers’ negotiating group, overcame their differences over a big sticking point in their talks: the introduction of automated cargo-moving machinery at the ports.

“This agreement protects current ILA jobs and establishes a framework for implementing technologies that will create more jobs while modernizing East and Gulf Coasts ports,” the two sides said in a joint statement Wednesday evening.

After members of the International Longshoremen’s Association went on a short strike in October, the maritime alliance agreed to raise wages more than 60% over six years, provided that other parts of the labor agreement — including provisions on automation — were resolved by Jan. 15.

The agreement is tentative because the union has not yet held a ratification vote and members of the maritime alliance also have to sign off on it. Members of other unions have in recent months rejected labor accords agreed to by their leaders.

The union has resisted the introduction of automated machinery at the ports, contending that it reduces jobs, a position that gained

Trump’s support.

“I’ve studied automation, and know just about everything there is to know about it,” he said last month on his website, Truth Social. “The amount of money saved is nowhere near the distress, hurt, and harm it causes for American Workers, in this case, our Longshoremen.”

The employers believe that automation can help them move containers through

the ports more efficiently, and wanted to get more leeway in the new six-year contract to introduce the technology. In their statement, the two sides did not say how they had settled their differences over automation.

“This is a win-win agreement that creates ILA jobs, supports American consumers and businesses, and keeps the American economy the key hub of the global marketplace,” the statement said.

A person briefed on the talks, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said the International Longshoremen’s Association had guarantees that jobs would be added when automated equipment was added at a port. The employers, this person said, got language in the contract that will give them a more straightforward path for introducing automated machinery.

The agreement will come as a great relief to the businesses that import and export through the East and Gulf Coast ports, which handle some three-fifths of U.S. container traffic. Fearing a strike, some companies had accelerated imports so that they arrived before next Wednesday and diverted some shipments through West Coast ports, whose workers belong to another union.

Many types of goods come through major ports in New Jersey, Virginia, Georgia and Texas, including automobiles, fresh produce and pharmaceuticals.

In October, the International Longshoremen’s Union and the maritime alliance agreed that wages would increase to $63 an hour, from $39, by the end of the new contract. With shift work and overtime, the pay of many longshoremen at some East Coast ports could rise to well over $200,000 a year. (At the Port of New York and New Jersey, nearly 60% of the longshoremen made $100,000 to $200,000 in the 12 months through June 2020, the latest figures available, according to data from an agency that helped oversee the port.)

The wage rose after President Joe Biden applied pressure on the employers to increase their offer.

Stocks

US activists’ demands push up stock prices but maybe not for long, Lazard report says

Demands by U.S. activist investors can send a target company’s stock surging, and new data from investment bank Lazard show that these corporate nudges generate considerable market index-beating gains in the days after demands are announced.

But the gains are not always long-lasting, according to a report by Lazard.

“Activism drives median share price outperformance of 200 basis points in the five days following campaign launches,” Lazard wrote in its annual review of shareholder activism, which was released to clients on Wednesday.

More seasoned activists that have launched campaigns for more than a decade saw up to 700 basis points of five-day market-beating stock pops, the report said.

“The market learning that an activist is launching a campaign, regardless of who the activist is or what specific demands are being contemplated, is enough to drive shortterm stock price outperformance,” said Christopher Couvelier, managing director and head of European Shareholder Advisory at Lazard.

But data also show that all activists are not created equal and that the share prices of some target companies sink after an initial pop.

The report did not identify any activists or their target companies, but said some target companies’ stock prices have outperformed the market by 4,000 basis points in the days after demands became public.

Global campaigns hit a new high last year and the number of investors relying on the strategy also grew, Lazard data show.

As activist investors pushed for improvements, they often asked for better allocation of capital, streamlined operations and sometimes the sale of the company. Refreshing senior management and the board was also a popular request.

Calls to fire a chief executive officer resonated with other investors who proceeded to buy the stock. The campaigns that included a “demand for CEO change outperformed all other campaigns with median 5-day market outperformance of 3.2% compared with 2.3%” for campaigns that didn’t include such a demand, the report said.

In addition, 14% of targeted companies saw their chief executives leave within one year of an activist’s making demands compared with the broader market turnover rate of 9%, the report said.

While there is often a strong stock price pop following

MOST ASSERTIVE STOCKS

the launch of an activist campaign, the stock price does not necessarily retain the gains, the Lazard data show.

Long-term results reflect a wider dispersion of relative performance, with many targeted companies underperforming their market benchmark, the report said.

“While targets of certain more prolific activists do tend to see sustained outperformance, that is not true across the board and ultimately ends up depending heavily on the idiosyncratic facts and circumstances of the situation,” Couvelier said.

“If we’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that Trump is unpredictable. He loves shaking up markets, but

the final outcomes are often less dramatic than his initial announcements,” ING analysts led by Chris Turner said in a note.

“However, officials and companies shouldn’t get too comfortable. We will only know what’s truly happening once it’s done.”

Eight out of the 11 S&P 500 sectors advanced with tech stocks leading gains, up 2%.

Chipmakers got a boost from Microsoft’s plan to invest $80 billion to develop artificial-intelligence-enabled data centers, as well as Foxconn’s forecast-beating fourthquarter revenue.

‘Here we go again’:

Trump’s territorial ambitions rattle a weary world

Ships crossing the Gatún locks in the Panama Canal, on July 10, 2024. President-elect Donald Trump has falsely claimed that China controls the Panama Canal.

(Federico Ríos/The New York Times)

WhenDonald Trump won a return to the White House, many countries thought they knew what to expect and how to prepare for what was coming.

Diplomats in world capitals said they would zero in on what his administration does, rather than what Trump says. Bigger nations developed plans to soften or counter his threat of punitive tariffs. Smaller countries hoped they could simply hide from four more years of gale-force America First.

But it’s getting harder for the world to keep calm and carry on.

At Tuesday’s news conference at Mar-a-Lago, Trump declined to rule out the use of force in potential land grabs for Greenland and the Panama Canal. He vowed to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” He also said he could use “economic force” to turn Canada into the 51st state as a matter of U.S. national security.

For those eager to parse substance from bluster, it looked like another performance of scattershot bravado: Trump II, the sequel, more unrestrained. Even before taking office, Trump, with his surprising wish list, has stirred up “here we go again” commentary from across the globe.

Beyond the chatter, however, are serious stakes. As the world prepares for Trump’s return, the parallels between his preoccupations and the distant age of American imperialism in the late 19th century are becoming more relevant.

Trump has already championed the era for its protectionism, claiming that the United States in the 1890s “was probably the wealthiest it ever was because it was a system of tariffs.” Now, he seems to be adding the focus from the 19th and early 20th centuries on territorial control.

What both epochs share is a fear of shaky geopolitics, and the threat of being locked out of territory with great economic and military importance. As Daniel Immerwahr, an American historian at Northwestern University, put it: “We are seeing a reversion to a more grabby world.”

For Trump, China looms — ready, in his view, to take territory far from its own borders. He has falsely accused Beijing of controlling the U.S.-built Panama Canal. There is also the specter, more grounded in reality, of China and its ally Russia moving to secure control over Arctic Sea routes and precious minerals.

At the same time, competition is increasing all around, as some nations (India, Saudi Arabia) rise and others (Venezuela, Syria) spiral and struggle, creating openings for outside influence.

In the 1880s and ’90s, there was also a scramble for control and no single dominant nation. As countries became more powerful, they were expected to physically grow, and rivalries were redrawing maps and causing conflicts from Asia to the Caribbean.

The United States mirrored Europe’s colonial designs when it annexed Guam and Puerto Rico in 1898. But in larger countries,

like the Philippines, the U.S. chose indirect control by negotiating deals to advance preferential treatment for American businesses and its military interests.

Some believe that Trump’s fixation on Greenland, the Panama Canal and even Canada is a one-man revival of the debate over expansionist pursuits.

“This is part of a pattern of the U.S. exerting control, or trying to, over areas of the globe perceived to be American interests, without having to summon up the dreaded words ‘empire,’ ‘colonies’ or ‘imperialism,’ while still extracting material benefits,” said Ian Tyrrell, a historian of American empire at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

Trump’s threats of territorial takeover may be simply a transactional starting point or some kind of personal wish. The United States already has a deal with Denmark that allows for base operations in Greenland.

His suggestion of Americanization there and elsewhere amounts to what many foreign diplomats and scholars see as an escalation more than a break with the past. For years, the United States has been trying to curtail Chinese ambitions with a familiar playbook.

The Philippines is again a focus, with new deals for bases the U.S. military can use in any potential war with Beijing. So are the sea routes that matter most for trade both in Asia and around the Arctic as climate change melts the ice and makes navigation easier.

“What the U.S. always wanted was access to markets, lines of communication and capacity for forward projections of material power,” Tyrrell said.

But for some regions in particular, past as prologue inspires dread.

Panama and its neighbors tend to see Trump’s comments as a blend of both the 1890s and the 1980s, when the Cold War led Washington to meddle in many Latin American countries under the guise of fighting communism. The Monroe Doctrine, another 19th-century creation that saw the United States treat the Western Hemisphere as its exclusive sphere of influence, has reemerged into relevance alongside tariffs and territorial deals.

Carlos Puig, a popular columnist in Mexico City, said Latin America was more worried about Trump’s return than any other part of the world.

“This is Trump, with majorities in both houses, after four years complaining, a guy that only cares about himself and winning at all cost,” Puig said. “Not easy for a guy like that not to show that he is trying to fulfill his promises, no matter how crazy they are. I am not so sure everything is just bullying and almost comic provocations.”

But how much can Trump actually achieve or damage?

His news conference in Florida mixed vague threats (“It might be that you’ll have to do something”) with messianic promises (“I’m talking about protecting the free world”).

It was more than enough to awaken other nations, drawing rapt attention and resistance even before he has taken office.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Wednesday warned against threatening the “sovereign borders” of the European Union — referring to Denmark’s territory of Greenland. He added that “we have entered an era that is seeing the return of the law of the strongest.”

What may be harder to see from Mar-a-Lago but is much discussed in foreign capitals: Many countries are simply tired of the America Trump wants to make great again.

While the United States is still a dominant force, it has less leverage than in the 1980s or the 1890s, not just because of China’s rise, but because of what many nations see as America’s own drift into dysfunction and debt, coupled with the surge in

development by other countries.

The international system the United States helped set up after World War II prioritized trade in hopes of deterring conquest — and it worked well enough to build paths to prosperity that made U.S. unilateralism less potent.

The protectionist, imperialist age Trump seemingly romanticizes blew up when Germany and Italy tried to muscle in for a greater share of the world. The result was two world wars.

“We saw how that went with 20th-century weaponry,” said Immerwahr, the author of “How to Hide an Empire: A Short History of the Greater United States.” “It’s potentially far more dangerous in the 21st.”

Christian Ulloriaq Jeppesen remembers how this all started.

In 2019, during Donald Trump’s first term as president, Trump floated the idea of the United States buying the island of Greenland. At the time, most people in Greenland (and Denmark, the European country that controls it) thought his suggestion was a joke.

“Everyone said, ‘Ha-ha, you can’t just buy a country; he doesn’t mean it,’” Jeppesen, a native Greenlander and a radio producer, said by telephone. “Obviously, that was the wrong way to take it. Look at where we are today.”

Now Trump has doubled down on his insistence that the United States needs to annex Greenland for security reasons. And that has Greenlanders asking the same questions as everyone else, but with a lot more uneasiness.

Is Trump just being bombastic again, floating a fanciful annexation plan that he may know is a stretch?

Or is he serious?

noon in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk; toured some sights, including a statue of an 18th-century Danish Norwegian missionary; and was hosted by a Danish Trump supporter. He said the reason for the trip was personal, not official, but the president-elect posted about his son and “various representatives” visiting and said, “MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN.”

“This is all getting scary,” Jeppesen said.

At 836,000 square miles, Greenland is the world’s largest island, about a fourth the size of the United States. It is an autonomous territory of Denmark and elects two representatives to Denmark’s parliament and 31 to its own, which is responsible for most aspects of the island’s government. Denmark, however, retains control over defense, security matters and elements of international affairs. Its location and landscape make it attractive to Trump on several levels.

Greenland is strategically positioned at the top of the world, east of Canada along the Arctic Sea, and is home to a large U.S. military base. It is loaded with mineral resources such as cobalt, copper and nickel.

Based on his comments in the past few weeks, Trump appears completely serious. Never mind that Denmark’s leadership has said the territory is not for sale, and its future must be determined by the local population.

“For purposes of national security and freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump wrote in late December in a social media post announcing his choice for ambassador to Denmark.

At a news conference Tuesday, the presidentelect took an even more surprising swerve. He refused to rule out using military force to get Greenland.

France and Germany are taking Trump seriously enough that they both issued statements Wednesday defending Greenland’s territorial integrity and warning against the threat of any military action.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany said the principle of the inviolability of borders applied to every country, “no matter whether it’s a very small one or a very powerful one.” The French foreign minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, said that it was “obviously out of the question” to threaten another country’s “sovereign borders.”

“Do I think the United States will invade Greenland? The answer is no,” Barrot told France Inter radio. “Have we entered an era in which the rule of the strongest is returning? The answer is yes.”

A further sign of Trump’s interest in Greenland came Tuesday when his son Donald Trump Jr. suddenly showed up on the island.

The president-elect’s son landed in the after-

And as climate change melts the ice, it is opening up new paths through the Arctic zone, which is becoming a fiercely contested region for shipping, energy and other natural resources, as well as military maneuvering.

The blast of attention falls at a touchy time for Greenland. More Greenlanders are chafing for independence, and many feel increasingly resentful toward Denmark, which has played an overseer role for decades. Greenland has a tiny population for its size, and most of the 56,000 Greenlanders are Inuit, part of a group of peoples who also live in Canada and Alaska.

The Greenlandic language is completely different from Danish. Many people follow a culture and belief system quite apart from those in Western Europe. And, like Indigenous people in the United States and elsewhere, they have been treated unequally for a long time.

The Greenlanders’ disaffection with Denmark was heightened two years ago after revelations emerged about Danish doctors fitting thousands of Indigenous women and girls with intrauterine devices in the 1960s and 1970s, often without their knowledge.

Danish officials have repeatedly said that Greenland is not for sale, though they have emphasized their desire for warm relations with the United States and signaled their openness to dialogue. Last month, Denmark’s king jumped into the fray by abruptly changing the country’s coat of arms to more prominently feature symbols of Greenland and the Faeroe Islands (another territory under Denmark’s control) — a polar bear and a sheep. Amid this debate over identity, many people are now puzzling over Trump’s intentions.

The Biden presidency: Four illusions, four deceptions

Americans tend to have a soft spot for our former presidents. Even the bad ones.

By the time Richard Nixon died in 1994, his presidency was as likely to be lauded for the opening to China or the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency as it was to be damned for Watergate. Gerald Ford’s pardon of Nixon, furiously condemned at the time as a dirty political bargain, was later celebrated as an example of selfless statesmanship. Jimmy Carter’s reputational resurrection — not just for the way he conducted his post-presidency, but also for his acts in office — would have astounded the country that sent him packing in 1980 amid stagflation and a hostage crisis.

Will Joe Biden enjoy a similar place in our national memory? It’s possible, and his administration had its achievements: NATO enlargement, the bipartisan infrastructure bill, defending Ukraine and Israel, strengthening alliances in the Pacific.

But Biden’s presidency will also be remembered for four big illusions — and four big deceptions. They will not serve his legacy well.

The illusions: first, that the 2021 surge in migration

was seasonal (“happens every single solitary year,” as Biden said that March); second, that the Taliban would not swiftly seize Afghanistan (“the likelihood there’s going to be the Taliban overrunning everything and owning the whole country is highly unlikely,” as he said that July); third, that inflation was transitory (“Our experts believe, and the data shows, that most of the price increases we’ve seen are expected to be temporary,” also that July).

The fourth, and the biggest: that he was the best Democratic candidate to defeat Donald Trump: “I beat him once, and I will beat him again,” he often insisted, even after the debate debacle.

That last illusion was pure hubris. But there was an arrogance to the first three, since he was loudly alerted (including by, well, me) on each point that he was making a fundamental mistake. The White House spent months in 2021 refusing to use the term “crisis” for the border — it was, instead, a “challenge.” Pentagon leaders warned the president that the Afghan government would soon collapse if the United States withdrew. Biden shrugged. Larry Summers was outspoken about the inflationary risks of Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package. Biden ignored that, too.

Those misjudgments doomed the Biden presidency, which never had a positive approval rating after the Afghan withdrawal. Maybe senior Democrats like Nancy Pelosi could have helped their party’s chances had they had the talk with Joe and Jill Biden about his reelection prospects in the spring of 2022 instead of the summer of 2024. It was left to Dean Phillips, the former Minnesota representative, to play the part of the boy who says the emperor has no clothes. Someone ought to nominate him for a Profile in Courage Award.

Behind the misjudgments were the deceptions. Biden ran in 2020 on the implicit but clear pledge that he intended to serve a single term. (“If Biden is elected, he’s going to be 82 years old in four years,” one campaign adviser told Politico in 2019, “and he won’t be running for reelection.”) He promised to be a bipartisan and moderate figure in the White House: “Unity” was the theme of his inaugural address. He, along with his entire administration, insisted he was mentally and physically fit to serve a second term. And he promised not to pardon his son Hunter if he were convicted of crimes.

Of these deceptions, the first was the most forgivable and the most foolish: It’s precisely because power is so alluring that the voluntary abdication would have been so admirable. His grudging decision in July not to run came too late to qualify as statesmanship.

President Joe Biden delivers remarks at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Fla., April 23, 2024. (Tom Brenner/The New York Times)

The other deceptions: less forgivable. The centrist voters who put Biden in the White House saw him as a safe and consoling pair of hands. Instead, he sought to govern as the second coming of Lyndon Johnson, with spending proposals amounting to $7.5 trillion — nearly twice what we spent to win World War II, adjusted for inflation. And he took to denouncing “MAGA Republicans” as a threat to “the very foundations of our Republic.”

Those MAGA Republicans responded the next year by rallying again to Donald Trump, who now owes his second term to Biden’s only term.

Worst of all were the last two deceptions. Last month, The Wall Street Journal published a comprehensive and devastating report on the president’s failing health. The paper reported that a former aide recalled a national security official saying, “He has good days and bad days, and today was a bad day so we’re going to address this tomorrow” — in the spring of 2021. Perhaps the president didn’t notice his own decline, so the deception might not have been his. But his entire senior staff must have noticed, and, as the Journal reported, they took advantage of it to enhance their own power. It’s a national scandal that deserves a congressional inquiry.

And Hunter? A father’s love is admirable. A president’s lie is not. In one of his last major political acts in office, Joe Biden forgot who he was. But it seems as if that already happened years ago. History won’t be kind.

Five horror movies to stream now

This month’s picks include a killer in a Mickey Mouse mask and a thriller that goes to extremes.

‘The Coffee Table’

One of last year’s most controversial horror movies was Spanish director Caye Casas’ taboo-breaking psychological drama about the aftermath of an unspeakable act. Now that it’s streaming for free, the faint of heart should steer clear, but the brave should buckle up.

The film begins as Jesús (David Pareja), against the wishes of his wife, María (Estefanía de los Santos), buys a gaudy coffee table. As if the table being ugly wasn’t enough, when Jesús installs it in the bickering couple’s living room, it becomes the centerpiece of a sickening act of violence while Maria is at the supermarket. When Maria returns home and visitors arrive, Jesús is forced to reckon with the ghastly horror in their midst.

I’ll hand it to Casas: He goes there, especially at the start and the finale of this sinister and surprisingly comic film. The pacing sags in the middle, when the screenplay (by Casas and Cristina Borobia) slowly treads dread and repetitively underlines issues of postpartum depression and toxic masculinity. Still, “The Coffee Table” is a welcome shocker at a time when risk-taking horror has become too rare. (Stream it on

Tubi.)

‘Cuckoo’

In 2019, German filmmaker Tilman Singer knocked my socks off with “Luz,” his nutso experimental possession film. He’s back with a bizarre body horror-meets-bird horror film that’s thematically oblique but is lots of fun to get lost inside.

Gretchen (Hunter Schafer), an American teenager grieving the death of her mother, travels with her father (Marton Csokas) to live with their new family at a remote resort in the Bavarian Alps. There, Gretchen meets a strange doctor, Herr König (Dan Stevens, sick and slick), with an interest in birds but also in Gretchen’s mute younger half sister, Alma (Mila Lieu).

Singer and his cinematographer, Paul Faltz, vividly capture Gretchen’s subsequent descent into hell with a parade of warped cinematic flourishes: mysterious avian sounds, disorienting camera angles and, best of all, supernatural moments, including a jump scare in which Gretchen is pursued one dark night by an entity in fabulous sunglasses.

The finale feels too much like an action film with no direction other than over the top. But after the smoke clears, what’s left is a smart and startling meditation on grief. (Stream it on Hulu.)

‘Coup!’
A pandemic is sweeping through America. The wealthy survive by escaping

to the country, while those who are less well off, including immigrants, fend off sickness any way they can. Battles are waged in legislatures and in newspapers over whether or not people should quarantine and wear masks in public. But this isn’t COVID-19. It’s the 1918 influenza.

That’s the setup to this horror-adjacent historical satire written and directed by Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman. The film stars Billy Magnussen as Jay, a wealthy and hypocritical journalist sheltering with his family at their rural estate, and Peter Sarsgaard as Floyd, a working-class chef with a grifter past who, by the end of this diverting film, turns Jay’s hopes for a safe and healthy future into a bloody mess.

The main reason to watch are for the leading actors’ fine-tuned performances but also for Kristine Nielsen in a supporting role as Jay’s maid. Nielsen, who memorably appeared with Magnussen in Christopher Durang’s 2012 Broadway comedy, “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” imbues her character with the kind of absurdist humor that Durang, a Tony Award-winning satirist who died last year, would have adored. ‘Nowhere Land’

I’m a sucker for any pop culture dark corner that desecrates happy-faced children’s shows, from the demented television series “Wonder Showzen” to last year’s toxic-father family drama “Mr. Crocket.”

That’s why, for fans of low-budget experimental horror, I’m recommending this flawed but twisted fable from directors Gerald and Michael Crum. MarkAnthony Baca plays a grieving father whose quest to find his missing daughter leads him to “Nowhere Land,” a scrappy children’s television show with threadbare puppets who command malicious forces in the real world.

You’ll need patience to weather the barely-there acting, a weakness that almost tanks the film. But the film cranks it to 10 when the actors shut up and the Crums focus on a warped visual vocabulary: analog video, gruesome special effects, taunting puppets and, most especially, Daryll Arellano’s skin-pinching sound. It’s in those moments that the film serves macabre cinematic delights akin to those in “I Saw the TV Glow,” another (and a superior) film about the grip that television can have on an adult psyche long after a weird but formative

show goes off the air. (Stream it on Tubi.)

‘The Mouse Trap’

Unlike a lot of horror fans, I have a high tolerance for the recent crop of horror movies that turned Winnie-the-Pooh, the Banana Splits and other beloved children’s characters into bloodthirsty evildoers. I’m looking forward to horror films based on Bambi and Popeye that might come later this year.

Add to the deranged list the “Steamboat Willie” version of Mickey Mouse that first appeared in a 1928 Disney animated short film. Taking advantage of the character’s expired copyright protections, this Canadian horror comedy transforms Steamboat Willie into a supernatural killer in a sad Mickey Mouse mask who butchers this way through a suburban game arcade. (A lengthy title sequence reminds the viewer that Disney “had nothing to do with this film.”)

What director-cinematographer-editor Jamie Bailey and writer Simon Phillips lack in slasher-film originality they make up for in mild chutzpah. Depending on your appreciation for Steamboat Willie and the Disney canon, watching clips of the mouse’s original short film interspersed with modern-day graphic violence will leave you thrilled or horrified or both. Keep your curiosity high and your expectations low. (Stream it on Amazon Prime Video.)

5 fitness resolutions that have nothing to do with weight loss

J

anuary can be an excellent opportunity to reset, but many fitness resolutions — like sculpting a six-pack or losing a lot of weight — can be unrealistic or unsustainable. When taken to extremes, they can also end up hurting your body image, mental health and metabolism.

This year, consider a fitness resolution that has nothing to do with how you look. Focus on learning a skill, accomplishing a physical feat or simply building a habit. These can all help you develop intrinsic motivation, or the desire to pursue something because it is inherently satisfying or enjoyable.

The key is setting a goal that’s the right size, said Karin Nordin, a mindset and behavior change expert. “I always recommend setting a goal that challenges you a little bit, feels a little intimidating and even scary,” she said. But it shouldn’t be so challenging that it feels impossible, she said. On a scale of one to 10 for how achievable it feels, she suggested aiming for a goal you would rate an eight or higher.

Nordin also recommended giving yourself a “prototype period” to help you refine a longer-term goal. You can tell yourself: “In January, these are the resolutions I’m going to try on,” she said, “like putting on a sweater in the store before you buy it.” Maybe that’s a month of a weekly Pilates class or two weeks of a gentle warmup before each workout. See how it goes, and then decide if you need to readjust.

Here are five resolution ideas to get you started.

Work toward a pullup

Pullups help improve upper body, back and grip strength, as well as core stability, and they require mobility through multiple joints. They’re a difficult exercise, but there are good ways to work up to a pullup or to modify it to be easier.

Start with exercises to strengthen your biceps, triceps, lats, shoulders, hands and core, said Maillard Howell, a personal trainer and gym co-owner in New York City’s Brooklyn borough. “There’s a whole cast of supporting characters that has to sync for you to do a pullup,” he explained. Exercises such as bicep curls, lat pull-downs, dead

hangs from the bar and core strengthening movements can all help.

Work on modified versions of pullups, too, like ring or TRX rows, and pullups with a band under your feet or knees. You can also try eccentric pullups: Start at the top of a pullup and slowly lower your body until your arms are fully extended. And when you advance from a ring row to a banded pullup, or from a pullup with a very thick band to one with a thinner band, give yourself credit — that’s real progress, Howell said.

Start running

If setting a specific running goal — like running a mile without stopping or training for a 5K — feels motivating and achievable to you, then go for it. But simply exploring running, at any speed, for any length or interval, is a worthy goal in itself, said Marci Braithwaite, a running coach in Washington who mostly works with people with larger bodies. Running can improve your endurance and cardiovascular health, and you can still get those benefits from shorter runs, even if you move slowly and intersperse running and walking, she said.

“I want people to do something that feels good,” she said, “because they’re more likely to continue doing it.”

Braithwaite’s program begins with an “exploration run”: running for 20 seconds, then walking for two minutes, then running for 20 more seconds and so on. Over time, you can increase the amount of running and decrease the amount of walking, she said.

Get up off the floor without your hands

Thanks to a now-famous study, many people are familiar with the idea that your ability to easily stand up from the floor can be an indicator of longevity.

This correlation doesn’t mean that learning to stand up more easily will extend your life, of course. But acing the sitting-rising test is a good goal that requires muscle strength, joint mobility, coordination and balance — and experts say this combination of skills could help reduce your risk of falling and also make it easier to get back up if you do.

If you aren’t comfortable getting down on the ground, begin by practicing a sit-tostand from a chair (also known as a chair squat), or stepping from the floor up to a step

and repeating, said Julia Rosenthal, a physical therapist who runs a clinic in Brooklyn. If you can sit on the floor, practice sitting cross-legged or in a deep squat to improve your hip and ankle mobility, Howell said. Tackle your aches and pains

Injuries and chronic pain can create an unhelpful cycle: You’re afraid of making the pain worse, so you avoid activity. But in reality, exercise can be one of the best ways to reduce pain.

Pain can have many factors beyond tissue damage itself, said Ann Nwabuebo, a physical therapist who runs a clinic in Washington, D.C. Stress, posture, inflammation and other factors can all play a role, she said, and both exercise and lifestyle changes can help.

So if you’ve been avoiding exercise because of lingering injuries or pain, resolve to tackle those problems this year. You might start with a good physical therapist, or with tactics such as stress management and getting more sleep.

Remember that you don’t have to be pain-free to exercise, Rosenthal said. You can have knee pain when squatting and still squat. Don’t let your pain become a selffulfilling prophecy, she said: “If you hold yourself back from doing something, you’ll

never be able to do that thing. The list of things you’re allowed to do gets shorter and shorter.”

Take your fitness a month at a time

The standard advice to get 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week can be helpful to some, but overwhelming to others, since not every week will lend itself to achieving that goal. Instead, set a target number of workouts per month.

Your monthly target might be 10 workouts or 15. “Focus on frequency before you worry about consistency,” Nordin said. “Most people have mental drama around the idea of consistency: ‘If I miss a day, I’m screwed.’”

Once you’ve picked your goal — and made a realistic plan to achieve it — consider the obstacles that might crop up and how you’ll respond to them.

“We all have thoughts, often objections, that pop into our brain over and over, like I’m too tired; I don’t have time; I can do this later,” Nordin said.

Think about what your mental objections to exercise are likely to be, and prepare a “thought rebuttal” to draw upon when needed, she said: “If your brain says, ‘I’m too tired,’ you say, ‘I’m tired, and I can do hard things while I’m tired.’”

This year, set a goal that can actually help you sustain an exercise habit. (Jiaqi Wang/ The New York Times)

Saudi Arabia, already pumping money into boxing, may start league with TKO

In the days after Donald Trump was reelected president, one of his most highprofile stops was at an Ultimate Fighting Championship event at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Trump’s appearance in the front row was notable, as was the presence of some of his closest confidantes, like Elon Musk, who sat alongside him. But few in attendance for the fights would have recognized the other man sitting beside the president-elect.

Yasir al-Rumayyan, the governor of Saudi Arabia’s vast sovereign wealth vehicle, the Public Investment Fund, watched the action from ringside and is getting even closer to being part of the action. A company owned by the fund is close to creating a boxing league with TKO, the owner of Ultimate Fighting Championship. A deal for what would be a new competition, featuring up-and-coming boxers tied exclusively to the league, could be announced within weeks, according to three people familiar with the matter.

TKO said in a statement Wednesday that it had “nothing to announce,” but that it “would evaluate any unique and compelling opportunity that could fit well in our portfolio of businesses and create incremental value for our shareholders.”

The wealth fund did not comment.

The potential investment in TKO follows a Saudi Arabian effort in June to create a multibillion-dollar boxing league that would aim to unite the world’s best boxers, who for decades have been divided by rival promoters and fighting for titles controlled by an alphabet soup of sanctioning bodies. That effort, while not completely abandoned, had proved complicated and expensive, even for a country like Saudi Arabia, which for the past half decade has disbursed billions to become a player across some of the world’s biggest sports.

The investment in the new league will be made by Sela, a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund. TKO — which is majority controlled by Hollywood talent agency Endeavor and embodied by Dana White, the UFC empresario, a longtime friend of Trump — will be a managing partner. In return, TKO has been offered an equity stake and a share of the revenue, according to the people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity ahead of the official announcement.

Saudi Arabia has backed some of the biggest and richest boxing bouts in history in recent years. It has played host to major title fights, most recently a faceoff between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury, which ended with Usyk becoming the first undisputed heavyweight champion in more than a generation. Fights like that, which for years proved almost impossible to negotiate, have taken place thanks to the millions of dollars put on the table by Turki al-Sheikh, a government official with close ties to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Al-Sheikh, a former security guard, has become perhaps the most powerful man in boxing, seen at ringside and even inside the ring for the biggest bouts. He is also a frequent recipient of messages of thanks from some of the most well-known fighters and boxing promoters, who refer to him as “His Excellency.” He pushed for a partnership with White, who over the last two decades has turned the UFC from a $2 million company into one worth more than $10 billion. Talks have been taking place for more than a year in the United States, Europe and Saudi Arabia.

Al-Sheikh had suggested in interviews that he was planning a new boxing venture. And he has made no secret of his frustration at the way the sport has been run, with the best fighters rarely meeting in their prime. In November, he purchased Ring Magazine — the century-old bible of the sport — and vowed to reestablish its prominence.

Al-Sheikh has also partnered with the World Boxing Council, a sanctioning organization, to create the Boxing Grand Prix, a tournament for young boxers.

For TKO, which owns both the UFC and World Wrestling

Entertainment, the venture has little risk, given that the Saudis are footing the bill. “If we were to get involved in boxing, we would expect to do so in an organic way, not an M&A way,” said Mark Shapiro, TKO’s president, on an earnings call in November, referring to mergers and acquisitions.

He added, “So, i.e., we’re not writing a check.”

Should the deal be completed, TKO will earn management fees of close to $30 million a year. Saudi Arabia is expected to pay significantly more in hosting fees to the league than any other country, according to details of the plan reviewed by The New York Times. Two fights there will bring in more than $40 million in fees. Other bouts are planned for the United States and Europe, where the hosting fees will be far lower.

TKO has also been talking with other parties, including other Arab nations, about the boxing league, according to one of the people familiar with the matter.

Endeavor, TKO’s parent company, has at times had a strained relationship with Saudi Arabia, and this potential partnership suggests that it has largely been repaired. In 2019, after the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Endeavor returned $400 million that the Saudi sovereign wealth fund had invested in the company.

For the Saudis, getting a partner like

White would come at an opportune time. He joined the board of Meta this week and has spoken at the last three Republican National Conventions. Trump regularly hosted UFC events at his properties in the organization’s early years, and he has attended many fights. Trump and al-Rumayyan are also close, with the Saudi-owned LIV golf championship holding several of its events at Trump’s courses, including one scheduled for April in Florida.

Saudi Arabian officials have described sports and entertainment as major pillars of a strategy, known as Vision 2030, to pivot their economy away from its reliance on oil exports and also as a part of efforts to liberalize society. Critics have described those efforts differently, positioning them as a way of using sports to distract the focus from Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, a tool known as sportswashing.

What TKO will get is a partnership with the biggest sports investor in the world. Saudi Arabia has invested in teams, talent and events across a wide range of sports, most recently securing rights to the 2034 men’s soccer World Cup, the most-watched event on the planet.

The UFC’s U.S. media rights agreement with ESPN expires this year, as does the network’s deal with Top Rank, a top boxing promoter. TKO could try and bundle the rights to its new boxing league with the UFC rights to help shore up the fledgling boxing league.

But applying the UFC playbook to boxing will be extremely difficult. Boxing is a much more heavily regulated sport than mixed martial arts, with the federal Muhammad Ali Act mandating a separation in boxing between the role of manager and promoter, and the public listing of purse figures.

Unlike UFC, the most prominent boxers will not be part of the league. And they may not think there is an upside to joining it. While the fractured nature of boxing means its earning potential isn’t maximized for promoters and managers, top boxers earn far more than top MMA fighters.

In October, the UFC settled an antitrust lawsuit filed by former fighters — who claimed that the company illegally suppressed fighters’ pay — for $375 million. Documents submitted as evidence in that suit showed that the UFC paid less than 20% of its revenue to its fighters.

In boxing, those figures are reversed, with fighters combining to earn well over 50% of the revenue from any fight.
