Gov. Pedro Pierluisi By THE STAR STAFF
G
ov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia said on Tuesday that he recognizes the need to amend the Puerto Rico Constitution, as unlikely as that may be, to add the element of imminent danger in cases involving a person accused of a violent crime such as murder, in order to impose a higher bail as a criminal deterrent. He made his remarks after the island’s first massacre of 2024, in which five individuals were slain in an apparent drive-by shooting on an expressway exit in Ceiba. “Under our constitutional system, bail is imposed to guarantee the appearance of the accused in judicial proceedings. That’s how it is,” the governor said. “What happens is that there are accused, and there are accused. When we have an accused who is, let’s say, a member of a drug trafficking organization, who clearly has economic and legal resources, but he is a highly dangerous person who, again, since he has great resources could evade justice, it is important that judges set an amount, set a very substantial bail amount.” Pierluisi said setting bail should be proportional to the type of crime. “I recognize that our Constitution does not -- and we tried to amend it at a given time and the amendment did
not succeed -- it does not establish, it does not allow it to be taken into consideration, [that] bail be imposed merely because of the dangerousness of the accused person,” the governor said. He said judges must take into account the risk that the accused person may not appear in court. The governor’s statements were made in the aftermath of the first massacre of 2024, which occurred Monday night on PR-53 in Ceiba, where four men and a minor were gunned down while traveling in a Toyota Tundra (see related story on page 6). “Well, from the information I have, it is related to drug trafficking,” the governor said. “The situation is deplorable; we are talking about young people as a general rule, including a minor under 16 years old who was heavily armed; there were illegal weapons in the motor vehicle that was involved in this massacre. It was a shooting that occurred in the Ceiba area. The information I have is that the young people came from the Fajardo area, they went to a cockpit fight in Naguabo, and when they were returning to their point of origin, well, apparently they were intercepted.” Despite the bloody event, Pierluisi noted the reduction in murder statistics and the arrest of “gatilleros” (shooters) as an achievement of his administration. “Today we have two fewer murders than last year. And last year was a record low number, a 20 percent reduction in murders when we compare 2023 with 2022,” the governor said. “It has been a 30 percent reduction when we go back to the beginning of 2021, and to find a similar number of murders.” As of Tuesday, at least 28 people had been reported killed so far this year in Puerto Rico, compared with 30 in the same period last year. “The important thing is that we continue the downward trend, that the police continue to do their job and get the other agencies involved,” Pierluisi added. “I am talking about, for example, [the] Justice [Department], the SIP [Special Independent Prosecutor] Panel, the Bureau of Special Investigations, among others. The federal authorities are working shoulder to shoulder with us.”

Damas Hospital in Ponce to shut down delivery rooms, services for pregnant women By THE STAR STAFF
T
he crisis in the hospital sector, punctuated by the Grupo HIMA system bankruptcy, continues on the island. The Damas Hospital in Ponce has asked the Puerto Rico Department of Health’s permission to shut down its four delivery rooms and services to pregnant women as early as Feb. 3, said the institution’s chief executive, Pedro Barez Clavell. The news comes amid a significant drop in the number of births and legislation giving couples an incentive to have children, according to a radio report. The request to cease obstetrics services in Damas’ four delivery rooms comes “after an extensive analysis of all the factors that affect the reduction of births, a phenomenon not exclusive to our hospital, nor to the island, [that] it is unsustainable for us to keep this service open,” Barez Clavell said. Information provided by the hospital and by the media
indicates that births in Puerto Rico have fallen by 49.5% in the past 10 years. “At Damas Hospital the reduction in births over the past 10 years is approximately 70%,” the hospital indicated. “In 2012, 1,520 children were born in hospital wards compared to 452 births in 2023. Births in Puerto Rico plummeted in 2023, with a figure of 17,772, its lowest level since records were kept [starting] in 1888, and less than half of those reported 10 years ago [in 2013], 36,580, according to recent data.” The information sent to the Health Department and the Office of the Patient Advocate for the closure said that pregnant women will be treated in the emergency room or sent to San Lucas Hospital, also in Ponce. The staff is expected to be relocated. The news comes at a time when the island has seen the bankruptcy of hospitals including San Jorge Children’s Hospital Damas Hospital in Ponce in Santurce and the Grupo HIMA hospital system.
Proposal filed to investigate AutoExpreso amid rash of complaints By THE STAR STAFF
S
an Juan District 3 Rep. José “Cheito” Hernández Concepción announced Tuesday the filing of a resolution to investigate the hundreds of complaints from drivers regarding the AutoExpreso system. House Resolution 1103, filed Tuesday, orders a detailed investigation into the entire AutoExpreso operation, as well as an evaluation of alternatives for the highway toll system finally operating satisfactorily. “For several weeks we have received dozens of complaints from drivers associated with the improper charges that the AutoExpreso system is executing on their accounts,” the lawmaker said. “The complaints range from charges for passing through toll plazas that they have not been through, to serious discrepancies in the balances. These situations are unaccept-
able. If the complaints outlined by citizens are corroborated, the operators of the AutoExpreso must answer for them.” “The operation of the AutoExpreso system has to be fair, transparent and efficient for everyone, otherwise it is not acceptable for yours truly,” Hernández Concepción added. “Our people must rest assured that this system, which is so widely used, operates normally, without shortcomings or doubts. We have to remember that it is about money, money in fines that drivers allege they did not commit, ‘errors’ in balance sheets. … These things have to be corrected now.” Citizens have used social networks to denounce the irregularities. One such post reads as follows: “I put $10.00 on the AutoExpreso [account], I have not gone through any toll and today it has $2.50 left. A few days ago I put $20.00 on it and yesterday it had negative $3.40. I THINK THEY ARE STEALING FROM US THAT’S HOW 2024 STARTED.”
“This is not a new issue,” Hernández Concepción said. “Unfortunately, since its implementation, the AutoExpreso system has faced difficulties that have called into question its operation. In the past, colleagues like Rep. José ‘Memo’ González worked on the issue successfully. But the system tends to revert to the same flaws and shortcomings as before that cost people money. Drivers don’t trust the system anymore and that’s very dangerous.” On Jan. 10, 2022, the Highways and Transportation Authority filed Regulation Number 9353, which establishes the rules that will govern the subscription, use, fines, infractions and payment of the AutoExpreso system. “This regulation came into force in February 2022,” the legislator noted. “But the system is failing again; it is totally unacceptable. In the House of Representatives, we are going to investigate this quickly and urgently.”
Lawmaker urges passage of resolution to prevent catalytic converter theft By THE STAR STAFF
D
istrict 4 (San Juan) Rep. Víctor Parés Otero asked the House of Representatives on Tuesday to approve House Resolution 983, which orders an urgent investigation into the theft of catalytic converters in Puerto Rico and the measures that can be taken to mitigate such criminal acts. “Given the dramatic increase in catalytic converter thefts on the island, in April 2023 we filed House Resolution 983, which orders the Committee on Public Safety, Science and Technology to initiate an in-depth investigation into the theft of this equipment and the measures that can be implemented
to deter the criminal act and avoid disruption to the lives of the victims of these crimes,” the legislator said. “Unfortunately, nothing has been done since its establishment; meanwhile, the thefts of catalytic converters continue non-stop.” The main reason for the sharp increase in catalytic converter theft is that they contain a number of precious metals such as palladium, rhodium and platinum, components that are sold on illegal markets. According to available data, about 2,200 catalytic converters were stolen in 2022. By the middle of 2023, the figure exceeded 600. “The problem faced by the victim of this crime is the
lack of this part; there are none [available] and they have to wait up to six months for it to arrive. This is a real issue and we have to find solutions,” Parés Otero said. “The resolution is also focused on developing new ideas and concepts to mitigate the impact that this type of criminal action has on the victim.” “One of the things we want to evaluate is whether the 9% inventory tax is one of the reasons for the lack of these systems being in stock,” the legislator noted. “I support the elimination of this tax, as it was embodied in House Bill 1692, filed by our minority leader [Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez] and the Speaker of the House, through a request from the Municipal Revenue Collections Center, and which changes that taxation to allow greater inventory.”

There will also be several designated areas for parking and transportation services for visitors to the festivities. “Ensuring safety is our priority so that all families can enjoy these days of celebration,” the mayor said. “Our security plan is solid, with the support of the Municipal and State Police, as well as our Cataño Emergency Management staff, who make up a team experienced in successfully managing all of our mass activities.” “We are waiting for you all at this traditional event to dance, sing, eat and enjoy with your family as all Puerto Ricans know how to do,” Alicea Vasallo said.
How will Uber’s pick-up and drop-off work for the Sanse festival?
Ride-hailing service Uber has established a pick-up and drop-off area in Old San Juan to elevate the user experience and allow visitors to easily get to and from the San Sebastián Street Festival starting this Thursday. By THE STAR STAFF
A
s islanders and visitors prepare to celebrate the traditional San Sebastián Street Festival in Old San Juan starting this Thursday, ride-hailing service Uber, with the motto “Get On and Off with Uber,” will have a pick-up and drop-off area available that seeks to elevate the user experience so that they can easily get to and from the festival. The area, located in Puerta deTierra in Old
San Juan, will be just a few minutes’ walk from the epicenter of the celebration starting Thursday and running through Sunday. “For Uber it is very important to contribute to the country’s mobility,” said Carolina Coto, communications manager for Uber in Central America and the Caribbean in a written statement. “We want Puerto Ricans, visitors and driver partners to have a positive experience getting to and from the San Sebastián Street Festivals. Requesting a trip through the Uber app will allow them to arrive and leave easily and more safely in an area designed for them.” The company also shared the itinerary for the use of the area, so that users can “get on and off” with Uber for the holidays: lJan. 18 and 19 from 12 noon to a.m. l Jan. 20 and 21 from 9 a.m. until 3 a.m.
Instructions for users: l Getting to Old San Juan: l For starting points in areas in Old San Juan the app will automatically assign the “Uber Fiestas de la Sanse Zone” l The driver will enter through the special assigned lane and leave you at the indicated point.
l Leaving Old San Juan: l When the user decides to exit, the process is the same. Just request the trip in the app by writing any point in Old San Juan and the app will automatically redirect you to the location that appears as “Uber Fiestas de la Sanse Zone.” l It is important that you go in advance to the waiting area on Tadeo Rivera Street and request the trip once you are at the site, to avoid
additional waiting charges or cancellations. “We recommend using travel verification by PIN, as it is very useful for mass events such as the San Sebastián Street Festival,” Coto said. “It allows you to confirm by means of a 4-digit code that you are boarding the correct vehicle.” During the days of the festival the app will only allow riders to reach Old San Juan and request trips from the aformentioned area due to access restrictions.

Aguada spa renovations to be completed by summer By THE STAR STAFF
T
he Pico de Piedra Spa, one of the most recognized tourist attractions in Aguada, continues to be under renovation that began last summer, and is projected to be ready for the next summer season, Mayor Christian Cortés Feliciano said. The mayor pointed out that the total investment in the project is $613,409.40 and consists of key improvements, from the removal and installation of tiles and wooden roof fascias, to painting throughout the spa, to the installation of new lighting in the parking lot, among others. “We are going to provide the people of Aguada and visitors with first-class facilities,” the mayor said. On the reputable tourist website TripAdvisor, most of the visitors who have published their opinion rate the spa facilities as excellent. For example, ‘kaina1975’ points out that “it is a beautiful place where you can share with family or friends. It’s quiet and safe. It has many gazebos where you can do your activities, it has ample parking and the beach is
clean and very nice. There are many restaurants in the area, from a beach bar to finer restaurants. I recommend it, and would go back again.” Similarly, site BoricuaOnLine published a review where it indicates that from the Spa there is an excellent view of Desecheo Island, and it is also at the mouth of the Guayabo River. “On the right side of the beach there is also a great place for snorkeling and their facilities are very attractive for walking, bike rides, and feature beach huts, running water and ample free parking.” The Pico de Piedra Beach festivals are famous throughout Puerto Rico, particularly the one celebrated every June 24, the day of San Juan Bautista. “Our Spa is the ideal complement for a good vacation or a weekend getaway, as it is very close to the city center, with a variety of shops, restaurants and events that we constantly announce in the press and social networks, such as the Artisan Market every Saturday in Cruz de Colón square,” Cortés Feliciano said.

González Colón touts support in housing projects By THE STAR STAFF

Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón said after visiting Manuel A. Pérez residential complex in San Juan on Tuesday that the more time she spends with island public housing residents and listens to what they have to say, the more committed she becomes to serving their interests as governor. “It’s something organic that comes up on every visit,” she said.
ew Progressive Party (NPP) gubernatorial candidate Jenniffer González Colón said Tuesday in a press release that with each visit to housing complexes her support from and commitment to the island’s most vulnerable increases. “It’s not difficult for me to visit a residential complex because my campaign in Precinct 4 started that way and I know the existing needs,” said the former island lawmaker and current resident commissioner. “I’ve had to climb steps from the bottom to reach this candidacy and I’m grateful for the support that’s growing,” she said. González Colón made her remarks after visiting Manuel A. Pérez residential complex in San Juan, where she listened to the needs of the residents and sealed her commitment to them. “Listening to them and sitting down to play dominoes with them is something that helps me connect with more [residents]; it’s something organic that comes up on every
visit,” she said. “I visit their businesses, barbershops, betting parlors, and apartments and share with the neighbors their concerns and aspirations. I know perfectly well their needs and I will continue to listen to them so that when we get to the governorship I will reinforce my commitment.” The candidate also recently visited the Aponte residential complex in Aguadilla, Aristides Chavier residential complex in Ponce and Luis Llorens Torres residential complex in San Juan. She said her visits give her energy in her new campaign. “Each visit to the communities motivates me to keep going and share my proposals,” González Colón said. “Listening to the ideas of Lucía Santana, who spoke to me about the empowerment of communities and young Anthony Rodríguez, who wants to help with drug prevention in young people, in addition to seeing the same needs in homes such as termites, leaks, unattended light poles that represent dangers for the children who play in the area. Listening to the challenges of care in government service agencies and others engages me more.”

ive people were killed in an apparent drive-by shooting in Ceiba on Monday night, forcing authorities to close a portion of the PR-53 expressway, police said Tuesday. Officers described the killing as the first massacre of the year. Three of the victims were found dead inside a Toyota Tundra pickup in the eastern coastal town of Ceiba, while a
fourth was found on the pavement. A fifth victim died at Caribbean Hospital in Fajardo while being treated for his wounds, according to a police statement. One of the victims is a 16-year-old boy, Police Chief Antonio López Figueroa told a local radio station. He said weapons were found inside the bullet-riddled pickup, and that the victims had just left a cock-fighting establishment in the nearby town of Naguabo. It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the shooting
that occurred at Exit 5 on PR-53 at around 9:40 p.m. Monday, although López Figueroa said authorities believe it was related to drug trafficking. At least 28 people have been reported killed so far this year in Puerto Rico, compared with 30 in the same period last year. PR-53 between Ceiba and Fajardo was closed in both directions Tuesday while the authorities worked the crime scene. Drivers were encouraged to use alternate routes.

The most durable force in American politics: Trump’s ties to his voters By MICHAEL C. BENDER and KATIE GLUECK
B
ill Clinton once explained the nation’s two political parties by saying that Democrats want to fall in love while Republicans want to fall in line. That adage has not withstood the Trump era. Today, it is Republicans who are besotted. Donald Trump’s decisive victory in Iowa revealed a new depth to the reservoir of devotion inside his party. For eight years, he has nurtured a relationship with his supporters with little precedent in politics. He validates them, he entertains them, he speaks for them and he uses them for his political and legal advantage. This connection — a hard-earned bond for some, a cult of personality to others — has unleashed one the most durable forces in American politics. Iowa Republicans, following the lead of party officials across the country, rallied behind the former president despite a list of reasons to reject him. Republicans lost control of the presidency, the Senate and the House during his four years in office. He failed to deliver the red wave of victories he promised in the 2022 midterms. He has been charged with 91 felonies in four criminal cases this past year. And they stayed with him even as they were offered viable alternatives: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a popular, young governor who embraced Trump’s policies, and Nikki Haley, one of the Deep South’s first female governors, who credibly promised she could win back voters Trump drove away. Yet in the first chance Americans had to cast judgment on Trump since he tried to overthrow an election, many Iowa Republicans made clear they don’t judge him. They adore him. “Trump is not a candidate, he’s the leader of a national movement,” said Newt Gingrich, a former House speaker who has advised Trump. “No one has come to grips with what’s it like to take on the champion of a movement. That’s why even as all these legal issues pile up, it just infuriates his movement and increases their anger unbelievably.” The risks associated with the kind of unusually strong hold Trump maintains on the party have already emerged. He has encouraged supporters to view him as above fault or defeat, a mindset that
Former President Donald Trump, a Republican presidential candidate, on stage at his caucus watch party in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024. Trump won the Iowa caucuses on Monday, a crucial first step in his bid to reclaim the Republican nomination for the third consecutive election. (Doug Mills/The New York Times) can lead to the kind of political violence that shocked the nation during the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. Elevating charisma over character can open the door to the kind of authoritarianism that Trump has promised on the campaign trail this past year. “A lot of the people that support Donald Trump really are fed up with democracy, representative democracy, they think that an authoritarian-style government would probably be preferable at this point, in order to save the nation or whatever,” said former Rep. Charles Bass, a New Hampshire Republican who previously voted for Trump, but said he would not do so again. “I don’t think they feel threatened by having somebody who at least has the trappings of being more authoritarian than past presidents.” Although Trump’s win was resounding, the Iowa results suggest the party remains deeply divided over his return to power. Roughly half of Iowa Republicans voted for one of Trump’s rivals, including about 20% who backed DeSantis, who finished in second, with Haley close behind. Republicans who resisted Trump in Iowa included the party’s youngest voters and anti-abortion-rights conservatives who backed DeSantis, according to entrance polls. Similarly, Haley won moderate voters,
Republicans who believed Trump lost the 2020 election, those who support a muscular foreign policy and the segment of the party that prioritized temperament in their choice for a presidential nominee. Party strategists and officials in other states caution against drawing sweeping conclusions from the votes of a narrow slice of Republicans in a small state. As the Republican nominating contest moves to New Hampshire next week, one poll this month showed Haley within striking distance of Trump. The state’s voters tend to be more moderate and less religious, suggesting an opening for her. DeSantis’ ability to threaten Trump is less clear. He marketed himself to voters as a Trumpian wunderkind, able to deliver America First policies without the drama and chaos that often trail the former president. But Republicans showed they are less interested in policies than they are the man, and DeSantis was turned back by MAGA Nation, which rivals the Queen’s Guard when it comes to standing at the ready to defend their sovereign. “I know that he is picked by God for this hour,” said Patricia Lage, an Iowa caucusgoer who spoke in support of Trump on Monday night in Carlisle, outside Des Moines. “There
are things that he has done in the past, but we all have pasts.” Trump has spent years tending to his voters — taking aim at their shared enemies and anticipating their grievances. He has compulsively tried to ensure that he was never out of step. That preoccupation repeatedly drove his decisions in the White House, from refusing to wear a mask during the initial outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020 to his opposition to striking the names of Confederate generals from U.S. military bases. More recently, Trump has attacked DeSantis for signing a six-week abortion ban and avoided committing to a federal ban on the procedure, betting that his voters will either agree or forgive him for deviating from a core conservative priority. Perhaps most significantly, he has rallied their support amid unprecedented legal troubles in part by describing the prosecution of him as an attempt to silence them. “You and I have been in this battle sideby-side, together — and we have been taking on the entire corrupt system in Washington like no one has ever done before,” Trump told Iowa supporters at a rally Sunday, adding that the political establishment and global elites “are at war with us — we have to fight.” Voter anger at political institutions remains sky-high — a dynamic that explains what appears, at first glance, to be nothing short of a political magic act: The billionaire son of a multimillionaire has become the voice for working-class Americans. “His gift is that the average voter in Iowa, New Hampshire and state after state feels like he connects with them,” said David Bossie, Trump’s deputy campaign manager in 2016. “He’s a blue-collar billionaire.” Both DeSantis and Haley have tried to weaken Trump’s ties to his supporters without issuing many direct attacks on Trump. But the race to emerge as the Trump alternative is becoming increasingly urgent, with limited time for the candidates to cement that standing. Former Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, a Haley supporter, lamented that much of his party had become “sort of a cult” around Trump. He still considers himself a Republican, though, and views Trump as the interloper. “I don’t think Trump’s a Republican,” Gregg said. “He’s a demagogue.”

Voters look past legal problems to give Trump a big victory By SHANE GOLDMACHER
D
onald Trump won the Iowa caucuses in a landslide Monday, a crucial first step in his bid to claim the Republican nomination in a third consecutive election as voters looked past his mounting legal jeopardy and embraced his vision of vengeful disruption. Trump’s record-breaking triumph, called by The Associated Press on Monday night only 31 minutes after the caucuses had begun, gave the former president an important win in a state that had rejected him eight years ago. But on a bitter cold night, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida finished in a distant second place, according to the AP. His narrow edge over Nikki Haley in a state where he had increasingly banked his candidacy could provide him some muchneeded money and momentum in the battle for the mantle of Trump’s chief rival. With Trump far ahead in most polls, much of the focus heading into the caucuses had been on the race for second, as DeSantis and Haley, a former ambassador to the United Nations, spent as much time and money attacking each other as they did the front-runner. With DeSantis finishing ahead of Haley in Iowa, and her leading him in New Hampshire, the possibility of a two-person race remains elusive for foes of Trump, who fear a split field will ease his path to the nomination. Even before the Iowa results were in, DeSantis had symbolically decided to fly directly to South Carolina after Iowa instead of to New Hampshire, which votes Jan. 23 and where Haley is making her next stand. Trump is the first former president in the modern era who has sought to return to the White House. On Monday, he easily exceeded the Republican record of 13 percentage points for the largest victory in a contested caucus. He was close to winning an outright majority of more than 50%, a critical psychological barrier for those in the party still hoping to stop him. Should Trump ultimately prevail as the nominee, it would set up a historic potential rematch in November with President Joe Biden that could play out on both the campaign trail and in the courtroom. “I really think this is time now for everybody, our country, to come together,” Trump said in his victory speech, before veering into divisive promises, such as raising deportation levels higher than they have been in decades.

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, a Republican presidential candidate, makes a campaign stop at the Bread Board on Caucus Day in Pella, Iowa, Monday, January 15, 2024. (Ruth Fremson/ The New York Times) Regardless of what comes next, Trump’s Iowa victory amounts to a remarkable resurrection of a political career that had once appeared in tatters. He was impeached in the final days of his first White House term for his role in inciting the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. His subsequent acquittal by the Senate left open the possibility of this return campaign. Trump has spent the past three years methodically consolidating power to ready his own restoration. Even his four felony indictments, and his status as the only former U.S. president to face criminal charges, have united many Republicans behind his claims of “election interference” and victimhood at the hands of Democrats and the “deep state.” DeSantis had previously predicted victory in the state, but Monday he sold his second-place finish as a success, saying he had overcome “everything but the kitchen sink,” including news organizations declaring Trump the victor before the caucuses had been completed. “They even called the election before people got the chance to vote,” DeSantis said, later adding, “We’ve got our ticket punched out of Iowa.” Now, the Republican calendar will turn to New Hampshire, where polling shows Trump is expected to face a strong challenge from Haley in a state where independent voters can also cast ballots. Trump’s campaign and his allied super PAC have already been blanketing that state with anti-Haley advertising, a sign of its competitiveness before the Jan. 23 primary. Even with her third-place finish, Haley boldly attempted to look past DeSantis, the candidate who had actually finished ahead of her, declaring, “Iowa made this Republican primary a two-person race.” DeSantis had entered 2023 as the party’s clear alternative to Trump. But early struggles, both financially and electorally, forced him to retrench and make his stand in Iowa, where he won the backing of the state’s popular Republican governor and a key evangelical network. His super political action committee knocked on more than 935,000 doors statewide.
Even with Trump far ahead, Haley’s allied super PAC spent more than $22 million on attacks against DeSantis just in Iowa, hoping to squash his candidacy in the very first state (the group had spent nothing opposing Trump in Iowa, according to federal records). Trump’s team believes a string of early victories — first in Iowa, and then in New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina — will position him for a blowout on Super Tuesday, all but locking up the nomination by March, when many of the delegates are up for grabs. They worry any early loss could lead to a more protracted fight. In Iowa, harsh winter conditions had scrambled turnout expectations and preparations for all the campaigns in recent days. First, a blizzard forced a slew of event cancellations. Then, subzero temperatures and a numbing wind chill Monday prompted warnings of “life-threatening cold” from the National Weather Service. Turnout appeared to be around 110,000 as of late Monday evening — roughly half of what the campaigns had predicted only weeks ago. Trump’s advantage across the state was striking: He led in cities, suburbs and rural areas alike. Supporters of Trump were animated by his dark portrait of a nation in decline and his apocalyptic rhetoric about wresting a country controlled by the left back from the brink. Trump’s vows to exact retribution on his political enemies have earned warnings from academics and Democrats of a drift toward authoritarianism yet have won cheers from his rapturous crowds. Long before the caucuses, Biden had begun to center his reelection bid on casting Trump as an existential threat to American democracy, citing his predecessor’s refusal to accept the results of the past election and his impeding of the peaceful transfer of power in 2020. A special counsel appointed by the Justice Department, Jack Smith, has indicted Trump over his role in that postelection period, accusing him of trying to subvert the will of the people. The case could go to trial this year — before the general election. The election subversion case is only one of four indictments that Trump faced in 2023, along with charges that cover his handling of classified documents, his hush-money payments to an adult film actress during his 2016 campaign and his attempts to reverse the 2020 election results in Georgia. If Trump does become the nominee, the 2024 campaign will have few modern parallels. He is poised to split his time between the campaign trail and his criminal cases as well as additional civil cases. And soon, the Supreme Court is expected to weigh in on the basic question of whether states can ban Trump from the ballot outright over his role in the Jan. 6 riot. A different case making its way through the federal courts will test Trump’s claim that he should be immune from prosecution. In her speech Monday, Haley framed the coming contest in New Hampshire and beyond as a choice between her and the possibility of a Trump-Biden rematch. “America,” she said, “deserves better.”

Nadine Menéndez wants her own trial. So does her husband. By BENJAMIN WEISER and TRACEY TULLY
S
en. Bob Menendez of New Jersey and his wife, Nadine Menendez, were both charged in the fall in a broad federal corruption case in which they were accused of accepting cash and gold bribes. Now their marriage itself is the centerpiece of a new legal argument. Both Menendezes are seeking to split their case and have separate trials, according to papers that each of their lawyers filed late Monday. In her request to a federal judge, Nadine Menendez said she understood that the senator might decide to testify at their trial, which is set to start in May in New York. “His testimony,” her lawyers wrote, “could include revealing confidential marital communications with Ms. Menendez that Senator Menendez deems essential and material to his defense.” Husbands and wives cannot typically be forced to testify against each other. And Nadine Menendez wants to maintain the confidentiality of her communications with her husband, her lawyers wrote to the judge, Sidney Stein, of U.S. District Court. The senator’s lawyers, in a brief filed several hours later, made a similar argument. A joint trial would “force Senator Menendez to make an impossible and prejudicial choice between testifying on his own behalf and exercising his spousal privilege to avoid being converted through cross-examination into a witness against his spouse,” they wrote in the new legal filing. The unusual request comes after Bob Menendez, a Democrat, took to the floor of the Senate a week ago to offer an aggressive rebuttal to the charges against him. He, his wife and a New Jersey businessman, Wael Hana, have all been accused of participating in a conspiracy to exchange political favors for gold bars; to have Bob Menendez act as an unregistered agent of Egypt; to take bribes to help the government of Qatar; and to try to block criminal investigations of allies in New Jersey. “I am innocent,” Bob Menendez said in the Senate, “and I intend to prove my innocence.” His lawyers filed a brief the next day, on Jan. 10, asking that Menendez’s charges be dismissed altogether, arguing that overzealous prosecutors were criminalizing normal legislative activity and violating the constitutional protections afforded to members of Congress. Menendez’s lawyer, Avi Weitzman, continued Monday to try to poke holes in the government’s case, calling it a “leaky, sinking ship.” The legal brief also argues that the case was filed in September in the wrong jurisdiction and should be moved to New Jersey. “If there’s a trial of this case — and there should be none — it should be a solo trial of the senator, in New Jersey, where all the key events alleged in this case took place,” Weitzman said in a statement. The U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York will have an opportunity to respond to the defense’s arguments when it files its legal briefs, which are due by Feb. 5. Nicholas Biase, a spokesperson for the U.S. attorney’s office, declined to comment Monday. The Menendezes and Hana have all pleaded not guilty, as
have two other New Jersey businessmen who are charged with giving the couple bribes in exchange for political favors. Stephen Gillers, a legal ethics professor at New York University School of Law, said that prosecutors and courts often strenuously objected to severing cases. “Prosecutors and courts hate trying the same case twice,” Gillers said. “They’ll look for any way to protect the rights of both defendants in a single trial.” In most cases, Gillers said, that can be done through an instruction to the jury that it consider certain testimony only in regards to the senator, for example, and not against Nadine Menendez. “The jury takes an oath to honor those limiting instructions,” he added. The senator married Nadine Menendez, his second wife, in 2020 after a whirlwind romance. She is central to the bribery conspiracy, according to prosecutors, who outlined the charges in three successive indictments. The couple met years before in New Jersey, where they both lived, friends and former acquaintances have said. But they began dating in early 2018, soon after the conclusion of an earlier federal corruption trial of Bob Menendez, which took place in New Jersey and ended in a hung jury in November 2017. Federal prosecutors there declined to retry the senator after a judge threw out the most serious charges. The Menendezes live in the split-level home in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, where she raised her two children, who are now adults. In searches of the house and a safe deposit box,
investigators seized more than $550,000 in cash, 13 gold bars and a Mercedes-Benz. Prosecutors claim that the car and much of the cash and gold were bribes given to the couple by Hana and the other two businessmen. Nadine Menendez and Hana, a U.S. citizen born in Egypt, had been friends for years and socialized regularly at restaurants and bars in North Jersey. Soon after Nadine Menendez and the senator started dating, she and Hana began setting up meetings with Egyptian officials, prosecutors said. At the time, Bob Menendez was chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. (He stepped down from the position, as required, after he was charged in the bribery conspiracy.) In 2019, Hana began operating a halal meat company in New Jersey. Within months, the Egyptian government had given the company, IS EG Halal, the sole right to certify that meat imported from the United States had been prepared according to Islamic law; until then, at least four companies had divided up the work. In early 2020, IS EG Halal won a worldwide monopoly, becoming the only company authorized to certify that halal meat imported to Egypt from any other country had been properly prepared. Many of the alleged bribes — mortgage payments on the Englewood Cliffs home, a low- or no-show job and a new Mercedes — were given to Nadine Menendez, according to prosecutors. Nadine Menendez had also set up a consulting company that prosecutors said was used to funnel bribes, making her central to the case against Bob Menendez.
Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) and his wife, Nadine, leaving after their arraignment in Federal District court in Manhattan, on Sept. 27, 2023. Menendez and his wife were both charged last fall in a broad federal corruption case, in which they were accused of accepting cash and gold bribes; now their marriage is at the center of a new dispute in the case, according to legal papers filed late Monday, Jan. 15, 2023. ‘Not where we need to be’: Boeing to make changes in quality control By NIRAJ CHOKSHI
B
oeing said earlier this week that it would make changes to quality control processes after one of its 737 Max 9 jets lost a portion of its body during a nearly catastrophic Alaska Airlines flight this month. The aircraft manufacturer said it would add additional inspections at its own factory and at that of an important supplier, Spirit AeroSystems, which installs the plug for unused exit doors, one of which blew out of the Max 9 midflight. Both companies will also open their factories to more scrutiny by the airlines that fly the 737 by inviting them to conduct more inspections of the manufacturing process, starting with those that fly the Max 9. And Boeing will bring in an outside party to review its quality control program and suggest improvements. Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 on Jan. 5 was forced to make an emergency landing in Portland, Oregon, after a door plug blew off, without any serious injuries to people on board. The Federal Aviation Administration grounded all Max 9 planes and said it would expand its scrutiny of Boeing. Inspections of the planes led Boeing to conclude that its manufacturing practices needed improvement. “The AS1282 accident and recent customer findings make clear that we are not where we need to be,” Stan Deal, the CEO of Boeing’s commercial plane unit, said in a memo to employees Monday. “To that end, we are taking immediate actions to bolster quality assurance and controls across our factories.”
The inspections so far have included examining and measuring the door plug to make sure it is installed to specifications. United Airlines, the largest operator of Max 9 planes, said it had found some loose bolts during early inspections last week, and Alaska Airlines, the second-largest Max 9 operator, also said it had found loose hardware in the area of the door plug. The accident called attention to Boeing’s quality control practices about five years after a pair of 737 Max crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia killed 346 people. The plane was banned globally for 20 months as lawmakers, regulators and journalists around the world scrutinized it and Boeing’s practices. Flights aboard the Max started to resume in late 2020 after Boeing made changes to the systems and components implicated in the crashes. The quality improvements that Boeing announced Monday include adding to the thousands of existing inspections both at Boeing and at Spirit AeroSystems, which builds the 737 Max fuselages in Wichita, Kansas, and ships them to Washington state, where Boeing assembles the planes. Since 2019, Boeing has increased the number of quality inspectors 20%, Deal said. Boeing also said it had dispatched a team to inspect the installation of door plugs at Spirit AeroSystems, approving it before each fuselage is shipped to Boeing. Boeing is also inspecting 50 other points in Spirit’s build process. In his message, Deal said Boeing was cooperating fully with the FAA and the Na-

together. Hayes joined JetBlue in 2008 from British Airways. He became CEO in February 2015. The company said in a securities filing that Hayes notified the board Jan. 7 of his intention to step down, with the board voting to approve the appointment of Geraghty, 51, the same day. In a message to employees, Hayes said he had been thinking about stepping down for a while. “This decision to retire was a difficult and deeply personal one, and I’ve been putting it off for some time — first when COVID threatened our future and again when we had the opportunity to acquire Spirit,” he said.

he CEO of JetBlue Airways, Robin Hayes, said last week that he planned to step down after nine years in the role and while in the middle of trying to carry out a merger with Spirit Airlines that could reshape the industry, if it isn’t blocked in court. Hayes will be replaced by Joanna Geraghty, the company’s president and chief operating officer, on Feb. 12, which would make her the only woman to lead a major
U.S. airline. Hayes, 57, will serve as a strategic adviser to the company after he steps down. In a lengthy statement, Hayes described the decision to retire as “bittersweet” and suggested that unspecified health concerns had driven it. “The extraordinary challenges and pressure of this job have taken their toll, and on the advice of my doctor and after talking to my wife, it’s time I put more focus on my health and well-being,” he said. “I am deeply
grateful for these many exciting years, and I feel very lucky to have worked at an airline with a brand, culture and team that are simply unlike any other in the world.” JetBlue announced plans in 2022 to buy Spirit for $3.8 billion. The Justice Department sued last year to prevent the deal, and the federal trial in that lawsuit concluded last month. The presiding judge has not yet issued a ruling, which could allow the deal, require that JetBlue and Spirit make some concessions, or prevent the merger al-

Most had reported lower profits on Friday. The broader banks index (.SPXBK), opens new tab slid to an over one-month low on Tuesday. Among others, Apple (AAPL.O), opens new tab dropped 1.6%, after offering rare discounts on its iPhones in China owing to competition pressures, days after being overtaken by Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab as the world’s most valuable firm. Also dampening sentiment were remarks by Fed Governor Christopher Waller, who said that while he was more confident of inflation being on track to the 2% target, there should be no rush to cut rates. Traders pared their expectations for the Federal Reserve starting rate cuts in March after the comments, with U.S. Treasury yields also rising. “Central banks across the world are starting to push back against bets of more aggressive interest rate cuts,” said Nick Zamparelli, chief investment officer at Sequoia Financial Group. Wall Street finished the previous week higher as investors continued to pin their hopes on an early start to the Fed’s monetary-policy-easing cycle - despite a lack of supporting voices among policymakers and mixed inflation data. “What you’re hearing from a lot of these policymakers is... it’s a little bit too early to declare victory against inflation and that is clearly a headwind to risky assets that are pricing in a much more accommodative monetary policy stance,” Zamparelli said. UBS Global Research boosted its 2024 year-end target for the S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab on Tuesday to 5,150 points, representing an over 8% upside from current levels. Even after briefly surpassing its previous record closing high last week, the benchmark index has faced resistance to breaching its highest intra-day level, hit in January 2022. Zelenskyy calls for peace, not more weapons, in Davos
Ukrainian soldiers fire mortars at Russian positions across the Dnipro River, in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine, Dec. 11, 2023. W
ith fighting still raging in Ukraine, and a front line that has barely shifted in more than a year, the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, headed Tuesday to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, amid a swirl of diplomatic discussions about possible peace talks. Zelenskyy, dressed in olive green pants and a black crew-neck sweater, was greeted with applause when he walked onstage in a room packed with hundreds of people at the forum, a high-profile gathering of business and financial elites. In his speech, he promoted a Ukrainian peace plan and called for stiffer sanctions on Russia. But in a contrast with his comments to the forum last year, Zelenskyy made no direct appeals for weaponry for new offensives on the battlefield. “We need you in Ukraine to build, to reconstruct, to restore our lives,” he told the audience of investors. “Each of you can be even more successful with Ukraine.” Zelenskyy highlighted his country’s plan to end the war, an initiative called the Peace Formula, which has gained the backing of do-
zens of countries. But those countries do not include Russia, and Moscow has rejected its terms. Russia has signaled through informal envoys that President Vladimir Putin is now open to cease-fire talks. But Ukrainian officials have said that they will reject any temporary truce that comes separate from a broader settlement, lest Russia merely use the pause to regroup and attack again. Russia, Zelenskyy said, has become an agent of chaos in world affairs, sowing instability in African nations, in Syria and in Ukraine through military interventions that attempts at negotiations have failed to slow. A cease-fire in the long-running war in eastern Ukraine did not stop the full-scale invasion in 2022, he said. “I don’t believe Putin is capable of changing, only humans can do that,” Zelenskyy said. On Monday, Switzerland agreed to push the Ukrainian plan a step forward. Switzerland will host a summit of countries backing the Peace Formula later this year, the country’s president, Viola Amherd, said after a meeting with Zelenskyy. The plan calls for a full Russian withdrawal from all Ukrainian territory, including
Crimea; payment of reparations; and prosecution of war crimes. All of those demands are considered, by analysts and even politicians backing the proposal, to be unreachable given the current balance of forces on the battlefield. The proposal also includes intermediary steps, such as securing Ukrainian nuclear sites, ensuring grain exports and exchanging prisoners of war. The war in Ukraine has been a notable, but not dominant, topic in Davos this week. Government officials and business executives from across Europe and around the world have continued to express support for Ukraine and voice concerns that it is losing outside financial support at a critical time, but they have also pushed publicly and privately for a diplomatic end to the war. Ukraine representatives and allies have worked hard to keep the war top of mind for attendees, staging a series of events in a temporarily converted storefront along the main promenade in Davos. Sasha Ustinova, a member of the Ukrainian parliament, spoke at a bipartisan gathering of U.S. members of Congress on Monday night. “Ukraine will not make it without the support of the world and especially the United States,” she said. She added: “I just want to be honest with you: I think everyone thinks Ukraine is winning. We’re going to lose without you.” In a speech Tuesday afternoon in Davos, Jake Sullivan, President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, said he and Antony Blinken, the secretary of state, met with Zelenskyy earlier in the day. Sullivan said he told Zelenskyy that “the people of Ukraine are steeled for the struggle ahead. And the United States and our partners will continue to stand with them.” Ukraine is now on the defense along nearly all of the 600-mile front line and is facing wavering support from allies in Europe and in the United States for continued military and financial aid. It is preparing for an unpopular draft of about 500,000 more men into the army. And the success of Donald Trump, who has opposed aid to Ukraine, in the Republican primary in Iowa on Monday signaled the start of an American presidential campaign in which Ukraine’s leverage in possible talks will rise and fall with Trump’s prospects of winning a second term. If Trump’s prospects appear to impro-
ve, pressure could rise in Ukraine to push for swift, if risky, military progress while U.S. backing lasts or to seek settlement talks, said Cliff Kupchan, chair of the Eurasia Group, a political risk assessment firm in Washington. “The smell of the coffee may become stronger in Kyiv,” he said. The selection of the next president of the United States “is a choice for the American nation and only the American nation,” Zelenskyy said in a Q&A session with reporters, adding that Ukraine would work with the president Americans elect. But he was clear that “radical voices from the Republican Party” have created tension and caused pain for the Ukrainian people. “In the time of war, everything hurts more, everything is more sensitive,” Zelenskyy said. “Some of the radical voices really scare the society in Ukraine.” “We need peace in the world,” he added. “Peace in Ukraine means peace in Europe. It means peace in the world.” The Swiss foreign minister, Ignazio Cassis, has suggested that Russia should be invited to the Peace Formula meeting even if Moscow was unlikely to accept. The Ukrainian plan represented only one side in the war, Cassis said at a news conference Sunday, and Russia’s positions would have to be heard eventually. It would be an “illusion,” he added, to think that Russia would participate on the terms Ukraine has laid out. Zelenskyy said last month that Ukraine would engage with Russia by conveying, via an intermediary, the settlement proposal after a meeting of leaders backing the plan. That formulation is a slight revision to his previous insistence that Ukraine would only negotiate after liberating its territory. Russia now occupies about 20% of Ukraine. Zelenskyy said that 83 countries had participated in a conference of national security advisers Sunday in Davos to agree on a final draft of the peace proposal. “For us, it is very important to show the whole world is against Russian aggression and the whole world is for a just peace,” he said. Ukraine introduced the plan in 2022 and has been seeking to build support ever since. After the meeting of national security advisers, Ukrainian officials rejected, as they have done repeatedly, the possibility of talks that would lead to a cease-fire freezing the current front line in place.

Houthis, undeterred by strikes, target more ships in Red Sea By MATTHEW MPOKE BIGG, VIVEK SHANKAR and THOMAS FULLER
I
ranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen have launched a fresh round of attacks in shipping lanes crucial for global trade, damaging a U.S.-owned commercial ship earlier this week after attempting to hit an American warship the day before. The strikes came just days after the U.S. and British militaries unleashed a powerful barrage on militant sites in Yemen, and the Houthi response made clear how difficult it might prove to remove the threat posed to shipping in and around the Red Sea. U.S. forces are bracing for a much larger retaliatory attack from the Houthis, who began targeting ships after the war in the Gaza Strip began and are preparing escalating responses, senior U.S. military officials said. After the United States and Britain hit more than 60 Houthi targets last week with more than 150 precision-guided munitions, U.S. officials said the militants still retained about three-quarters of their ability to fire missiles and drones at ships transiting the Red Sea. Many of their weapons systems are on mobile platforms and can be readily moved or hidden, officials said. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of Britain, nevertheless, said Monday that the airstrikes had achieved their objectives and showed that Britain was “prepared to back our words with actions.” Speaking in Parliament, Sunak described the strikes as “limited, not escalatory” and a “necessary and proportionate response to a direct threat.” British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps told Sky News: “We never thought that this would remove all of their facilities. That wasn’t the goal. The goal was to send a very clear message.” The Houthi missile fired Monday hit the Gibraltar Eagle, a bulk carrier owned by an American company, Eagle Bulk Shipping, and that was sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands. The company said in a statement that the vessel had been carrying steel products. It began its journey in South Korea and had been headed toward the Suez
Canal but turned around Monday, according to data from Marine Traffic, which provides real-time information about the positions of ships. Earlier Monday, U.S. forces detected an anti-ship ballistic missile fired toward the southern Red Sea commercial shipping lanes, U.S. Central Command said. “The missile failed in flight and impacted on land in Yemen,” it said. A spokesperson for the Houthis, Yahya Sarea, said in a statement Monday that the group had carried out a military operation targeting an American ship in the Gulf of Aden with “a number” of missiles. He said the Houthis had acted “in defense of the Palestinian people in Gaza, who are being exposed, until this moment, to the most horrific type of massacres by the Zionist entity.” The group considers “all American and British ships” to be enemy targets, Sarea said, and warned that its response to the U.S. and British attacks “is coming.” On Sunday, the United States said it had shot down a missile fired by Houthi fighters at a Navy destroyer, the USS Laboon. A U.S. fighter jet near the coast of the city of Hudaydah shot down the missile and no injuries or damage were reported, the U.S. military said. The Houthi attacks over the past three months have collapsed the volume of cargo transiting the Suez Canal, as shipping companies have diverted their vessels around the southern coast of Africa. The volume of containers transported through the Red Sea in December measured half of what it was the previous December, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. If the conflict persists, Europe could be faced with significantly higher costs, economists say. The price of shipping a container from Asia to Europe has more than doubled since the Houthis began their attacks in mid-November, the Kiel institute calculated. A number of car factories in Europe have said they will suspend production because of disruptions to their supply chains, and the Reuters news agency Monday reported that Qatar had suspended shipments
of liquefied natural gas via the Red Sea. More than a dozen oil tankers have steered clear of the Red Sea since last week’s U.S.-led strikes, the news agency reported. The Houthi attacks, and their militancy toward Israel and the United States in the midst of the IsraelHamas war, have increased the militants’ stature in the Middle East. Over the weekend, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel marked the 100th day of the war by vowing to continue the fighting until “total victory” over Hamas. “Nobody will stop us,” he said. Hamas led the Oct. 7 assaults on southern Israel that, the Israelis say, killed around 1,200 people. The Israeli military response has killed more than 23,000 Palestinians, a majority of them women and children, according to Gaza health officials. On Monday, the Palestine Red Crescent Society said it had resumed emergency and rescue services in Gaza City, in the north of the strip, more than two months after the Israeli ground offensive forced it to halt operations and shut down its hospital. Weeks of intense airstrikes and the Israeli ground offensive had essentially cut off the north. The resumption of services is possible now because the Israeli military is withdrawing forces from the areas around some hospitals in northern Gaza as it turns its focus to the south, said Nebal Farsakh, a Red Crescent spokesperson. Nearly a dozen rescue crew members arrived at Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza City, which is run by the Red Crescent and was a hub of the group’s operations before it ran out of fuel and shut down on Nov. 12. Farsakh said they were “shocked by the massive destruction” they found and determined that they could not work there. “The hospital is completely burned from the outside, and inside all the equipment was completely destroyed,” she said. On Monday, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said at a news conference that the intensive phase of ground maneuvers in northern Gaza had ended and that forces there were now dealing with “pockets of resistance.”

How Trump’s opponents made Iowa easy for him By ROSS DOUTHAT
D
onald Trump’s victory in the Iowa caucuses was resounding enough to make the race for the Republican nomination look essentially finished at the start. But it wasn’t resounding enough to remove the sense that it could have been otherwise, that yet again his opposition within the Republican Party made things ridiculously easy for his candidacy. Trump is essentially running an incumbent’s campaign, presenting himself as the default leader of the party, declining to debate, rolling up endorsements. But his opposition combined, it appears, for reasonably close to 50% of the caucus vote. And for a normal incumbent, losing almost half the vote in an early state would be a sign of danger, weakness, disarray. Eugene McCarthy’s 42% of the New Hampshire primary vote in 1968 forced Lyndon Johnson out of the race. Ted Kennedy’s 31% in Iowa and 37% in New Hampshire in 1980 betokened a long and bitter campaign for Jimmy Carter. Pat Buchanan’s 38% against George H.W. Bush in New Hampshire in 1992 was regarded as a political earthquake, even though Bush cruised thereafter. Combine the Iowa vote for Ron DeSantis with the

Former President Donald Trump, a Republican presidential candidate, speaks at his caucus watch party in Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024. (Doug Mills/The New York Times) vote for Nikki Haley, and even granting most of the support of Vivek Ramaswamy — who dropped out of the race Monday night — to Trump, you still have a total as impressive as those past anti-incumbent showings. But of course you can’t combine them, any more than you could combine the Ted Cruz-Marco Rubio-John Kasich votes in the decisive primaries of 2016. In that race, the splintered field handed Trump the nomination. In this one, he would probably win even facing a unified opposition — but it would be an interesting campaign, at least, instead of the coronation that we’re likely to get. In one sense, it’s entirely understandable that there’s no unified opposition candidate. Like the divided field of eight years ago, Haley and DeSantis represent different constituencies with different visions of what the GOP should become, and the viciousness with which they ended up scrapping over second place in Iowa reflects the potential depth of those divisions. But in another sense it’s absurd that it’s come to this again. If you paid attention to the wrangling on the debate stage last week, you could discern a few key areas of real policy disagreement — most notably over our Ukraine strategy. But just as notable was the extent to which their official positions were quite similar. DeSantis would accuse Haley of being insufficiently conservative or populist on some key issue, and instead of really defending a moderate or establishment position, she would insist that, no, she was just as conservative as him. Meanwhile, despite his populist affect, DeSantis wasn’t offering anything like the free-spending, almost-liberal promises that Trump made back in 2016; his squabble with Haley over the Social Security retirement age was
not exactly a grand ideological battle. So if the two anti-Trump candidates could converge that much on the issues despite their different constituencies, even in a debate they spent hammering at each other, it doesn’t seem that hard to imagine a single candidate running a unifying not-Trump-again campaign. It would be a little more populist than Haley’s candidacy has been, a little less ideological and Cruzish than DeSantis’ approach to date — but not so radically different from the race that we’ve watched both of them run. If you wanted such a unifying not-Trump-again candidacy, you should blame DeSantis, first, for botching a chance to clear the field early and for failing to adapt thereafter. He lost his chance to be an actual front-runner when Trump began to be indicted. But a stronger start, a more effective operation and a sales pitch that emphasized his competence as much as his conservatism could have conceivably kept Haley in Tim Scott territory in the polling and brought many of her voters around to him in the end. Instead, as conservative writer Peter Spiliakos argues, DeSantis’ persistent weakness encouraged the party’s moderates to treat their votes as expressive rather than strategic — backing Haley because it felt good, even though her path to victory was obscure. But then you should also blame Team Haley — not her voters so much as the big donors who sustained her and right-of-center media figures who have spent the past few months boosting her — for going all in on a candidate who clearly, clearly has less of a chance of winning a head-to-head battle with Trump than even the disappointing version of DeSantis. I understand the establishment and moderate and Never Trump desire not to reward DeSantis for his imitations of Trumpism. But the anti-populist conceit that there was no real difference between the two men was never rooted in reality. The idea that a President DeSantis could somehow be a more dangerously illiberal figure than Trump seems risible after watching both of them campaign. And the notion that you can pull the GOP away from Trump without something like the DeSantis record and approach is a pleasant fantasy, not a strategy worth anybody’s time and resources. Now exactly that implausible strategy, elevating Haley over DeSantis, will probably define the New Hampshire primary. It’s her best and only shot to become the not-Trump-again standard-bearer and to prove my skepticism wrong. But it’s more likely that every New Hampshire voter who picks her as their not-Trump option is just making Trump’s path to victory easier than it had to be.

ith multiple awards each, “The Bear,” “Succession” and “Beef” were the night’s big winners at the 75th Emmy Awards, which was held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday. Some notable first-time winners included Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) and Steven Yeun and Ali Wong (“Beef”). And Elton John joined the EGOT club — he now has an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony — when he won the Emmy outstanding variety special for “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.” The nostalgia-fueled ceremony, which was hosted by“black-ish” star Anthony Anderson, was broadcast live on Fox and will be available to watch on Hulu beginning Tuesday. It was originally scheduled for September but was postponed because of the simultaneous Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes, one of the longest labor crises in the history of the entertainment industry. In September, the Writers Guild of America reached a deal with entertainment companies; and in November, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, the union representing tens of thousands of actors, followed suit — agreements that allowed the awards show to go on.

‘Night Swim’ review: H Hold your breath, forever
ollywood horror often attempts to work out collective anxiety about the suburbs, that place full of pleasant-looking houses creaking with ghosts and terrors. Suburban life is, admittedly, fundamentally strange, with neighborhoods full of atomized worlds and natural features turned into individual, highlycontrolled assets. A forest becomes manicured bushes. A lake becomes a pool. Pools are ubiquitous across the American suburbs (just peek out the window when you fly), and the affluence, comfort and fun they represent can turn a middling kid into the most popular one at school, at least during the hot months. They are also ubiquitous in horror, from “Gremlins” to that greatest instance of suburban anxiety, “Poltergeist.” For the Waller family of “Night Swim,” the pool means freedom, friends and a new lease on life. But pools can also be deadly (accidental drowning is the No. 1 killer of young children), so the pleasure comes with an edge, a fact the Waller family is about to learn. Ray Waller (Wyatt Russell) is a former major league baseball player, a real slugger, whose multiple sclerosis has taken him out of the game. His wife, Eve (Kerry Condon), is eager to finally settle down, proving a lasting home for their two children: breezy teenage Izzy (Amélie Hoeferle) and Elliot (Gavin Warren), who struggles more than his sister to fit in with other kids. They find an old house outside the Twin Cities, fall in love and buy it, then commence cleaning out the gloppy, unused pool in the backyard. It becomes an oasis. And for a while, the pool seems to be helping Ray get better. But this is a horror film, so the Wallers cannot have nice things and, unfortunately, neither can we. “Night Swim” is the feature debut of Bryce McGuire, produced by horror mavens James Wan and Jason Blum and based on McGuire’s 2014 short film. (A tidbit too odd
to ignore: that short was filmed in musician Michelle Branch’s backyard pool.) The first half of the movie is remarkably effective, especially if you’ve ever had a pool, and especially if you’ve swam in it at night, though lots of “Night Swim” happens during the day. Jumps abound, and a scene with Izzy and her crush is especially terrifying. But it goes downhill at some point. The inciting concept is so strong — the pool, to rephrase the meme, that makes you dead — that all additions after a certain point start to feel like overkill. The strongest horror concepts are spare and uncluttered: something is chasing you, something is thumping under the bed. They tap into an anguish that is fundamental and gut-level, a level way lower than your head. The problem with “Night Swim” is that it’s trying to say a little too much, which isn’t a complete pleasure-killer, but can get distracting. It’s partly a movie about a primal fear of the water, and that’s where it’s most effective. (In the grand tradition of “Jaws,” I anticipate a few viewers being hesitant about dipping a toe in next summer.) But other horror tropes pop up here and there — the “Indian burial ground,” the sick kid — themes surfacing in an ungainly manner. It’s a movie about the dark side of ambition and the true nature of sacrifice; also family favoritism, and illness, and maybe hell? By the end I wasn’t really sure, and the general goofiness that emerges in the third act undercuts the emotional resonance it’s going for. McGuire clearly has the chops and the imagination for horror, so I’m excited to see what he does next. And for a winter horror release — typically a great time to go to the movie theater, munch popcorn and get your pants scared off — it does the job. In fact, pool owners should be glad it’s a January release. You’ll have a few months to let the dread wear off. Maybe. ‘Night Swim’ Rated PG-13 for scariness and children in peril. Running time: 1 hour 38 minutes. In theaters.

Can dieting actually lead to long-term weight loss? By ALICE CALLAHAN
D
ieting has long been viewed as the path to smaller bodies and better health. Stick to the right diet, the $75 billion U.S. weight loss industry may have you think, and you, too, can lose weight and keep it off. The rise of new weight loss drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound has highlighted just how ineffective dieting has been for the millions of people who have tried it. In a 2021 clinical trial of semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy), for example, those taking the medication lost about 15% of their body weight in a little over a year, while those relying on just diet and exercise dropped only about 2%. But there are many people who want to lose a few pounds for whom weight loss drugs are not the right choice. For those people, is old-fashioned dieting a good option? We asked some experts to help explain what dieting can — and can’t — do for you. Can a diet help you lose weight? In the short term, diets do seem to help most people lose at least a small amount of weight, whether it’s a low-fat or low-carbohydrate diet or just plain calorie restriction, said Dr. Ellen Schur, director of the University of Washington Nutrition and Obesity Research Center. But individual results can vary. In one 2018 clinical trial, for example, researchers asked 600 people to follow either a lowfat or a low-carb diet for one year. While most participants lost weight — on average, 5% to 6% of their body weight (or 12 to 13 pounds) — about 15% gained weight during the study, and a few lost as many as 50 to 60 pounds. It’s common, though, for people’s weight loss to plateau at around six to eight months, after which they are at risk of regaining that weight, said Dr. Maria CollazoClavell, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic. Research suggests that most people return to their previous weight within about four years. For those who are successful at keeping their weight off, it’s not clear if it’s because of their genetics, health history or
Dieting has long been viewed as the path to smaller bodies and better health. Stick to the right diet, the $75 billion U.S. weight loss industry may have you think, and you, too, can lose weight and keep it off. (Derek Brahney/The New York Times) simply their life circumstances, such as having a supportive partner, a stable job or time to cook, said Kevin Hall, a nutrition and metabolism scientist at the National Institutes of Health. Why doesn’t the weight stay off? When you lose weight, your body responds by increasing your appetite and reducing the number of calories you burn, Hall said. He and others have estimated that for every 2 pounds of weight you lose, your metabolism slows by about 25 calories per day, and your appetite increases by about 95 calories per day. So in other words, if you lose 20 pounds, your body will burn roughly 250 calories less each day while craving about 950 calories more. To maintain your weight loss through dieting over time, you’ll have to continue eating less while resisting a rising appetite and slower metabolism, which is “increasingly difficult,” Schur said. The drive to eat more is so strong because our brains “sense that our energy stores are being depleted,” she added, and “that’s a threat to our survival.” The new weight loss drugs prevent weight regain in part by reducing normal
appetite signals, Collazo-Clavell said. But when people stop taking the drugs, the weight returns, probably for the same reasons described above. Are there health risks associated with dieting for weight loss? Dieting often results in cycles of weight loss and regain, and some research has suggested that this can be harmful, said Kendrin Sonneville, an associate professor of nutritional sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Some, but not all, studies have found that weight fluctuation is associated with earlier death, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and depression; however, these studies sometimes include people who have lost and regained weight because of health problems, not just from dieting. “There’s not conclusive evidence that it’s harmful to go up and down,” Schur said, but there is debate about the possibility. Sonneville also worries that dieting may put some people at risk of developing an eating disorder. Anecdotally, many people with eating disorders say that their conditions began with dieting, she said. While clinical weight loss trials have not borne this out, those studies have had many limitations
and have not fully assessed how dieting affects “people’s relationship with food and their bodies in the long term,” Sonneville said, so more research is needed. Most people who diet don’t develop an eating disorder, Sonneville said, but even then, their relationships with food can deteriorate if they start “prioritizing weight and nutrition over joy and culture and connection.” If you have a difficult relationship with food and your body, or if you have experienced binge eating or another eating disorder, Schur said, it is more important to focus on a healthy relationship with food than on your weight. If dieting doesn’t work, what should we do? People sometimes think that if they just “grit their teeth and white-knuckle it through” a diet to lose 10 or 20 pounds, “they can start to relax,” Hall said. “That’s the wrong way to think about it.” If you want to change the way you eat in order to lose weight, you have to sustain those changes “for the rest of your life,” he said. “Otherwise, you’re going to regain the weight.” Given that, consider making healthy changes that you can stick with, he said. If you consume a lot of ultraprocessed foods, reducing your intake can be a sustainable approach. Short-term research has shown that those who consume mostly ultraprocessed foods tend to eat more and gain more weight than those who consume minimally processed foods, though Hall acknowledged that a lack of time, money and access to whole foods are all potential barriers to making this change. Collazo-Clavell suggested adopting a Mediterranean eating pattern, which focuses on healthy fats, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fruits and vegetables. Taking time to eat at least two or three square meals each day can help you feel full and be less likely to overeat at the end of the day, she added. And avoid eating within three hours of going to bed, which is associated with weight gain. Getting regular physical activity can also help with keeping the weight off and has many other benefits, including a longer life and a lower risk of dementia, Schur said.

How to win more games than anyone By GLENN KRAMON
S
ometime in the next few weeks, when she wins her 1,203rd game, Tara VanDerveer at Stanford will pass Mike Krzyzewski at Duke as the college basketball coach — man or woman — with the most wins of all time. It took Krzyzewski, who is known as Coach K, 47 seasons to reach that milestone. T Dawg, as VanDerveer is affectionately called on campus, will get there in 45, with 38 of them at Stanford. She will also do it with a higher winning percentage — about 82% of her games versus Krzyzewski’s 77%. She has won three NCAA championships, even though many of the nation’s best women’s basketball athletes can’t play for her because they don’t meet Stanford’s academic standards. Most CEOs are lucky to have a decade of ascendancy at a job. How can a leader be so successful for almost half a century, with a winning record at Stanford for every season after her inaugural one in 1985? Then there’s the fact that NCAA sports have changed fast in recent years. Now, collectives of big donors at competing schools are paying large sums to attract and keep athletes not just in football but also in other sports, including women’s basketball. (VanDerveer’s own players have declined substantial offers.) And soon, universities may have permission to pay athletes directly. But Stanford donors, affluent as they are, have so far not stepped up as much as those of other schools. At 70, VanDerveer is a decade or two older than many of her most successful competitors. She’s old enough to be a grandmother to her players. But through generations of cultural change and a transformation of college athletics, she has found ways to adapt. There are lessons in her success, perhaps, for other baby boomers who find themselves in a workplace full of younger colleagues. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity. Q: When you took this coaching job four decades ago, your dad said you were crazy because you couldn’t win in basketball at Stanford. Were you crazy? A: In 1985, I had a great job coaching at Ohio State (283 the previous season, while Stanford was 9-19). We had just beaten Stanford by 32 points. But one player we recruited, Emily Wagner, chose Stanford over Ohio State, because if she got hurt or things didn’t work out on the court, Stanford was where she’d be happy. Emily was probably the reason I got hired, because she told the athletic director she wanted to play for me. I said no the first time, then came back and met with Stanford’s track coach, Brooks Johnson. Brooks, who is Black, said Stanford’s team was almost all white and he could help me recruit a great diverse team. He was brilliant. As for my dad, I told him, ‘‘We just have to get three or four of the best players from around the country.” And we did. Q: Your own rules for leading a winning team? A: Hire right. As my dad said, “You can’t win the Kentucky Derby on a donkey.” And not just players but staff. Be sure they complement you more than compliment you. Have a vision for your players, and give them the tools. Maximize people’s strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Don’t be the center of attention. Don’t micromanage,
and seek input. Outwork the players on your team. Take care of yourself — eat and sleep right, and exercise — so you can take care of one another. If you can’t swim, you can’t rescue the other swimmer, and you’ll both go down. You can’t have 15 personalities, one for each player. But you can recognize everyone’s different, and get to know them and understand where they’re at. Every behavior is communication — not just words but also eye contact and body language. Know that if your senior leaders are unhappy, your whole team will be. Learn the art of the controlled meltdown. Q: The controlled meltdown. Can you elaborate on that one? A: I try to be even-keeled — not get too high or too low. I am intense, but I am not a screamer who gets technical fouls. I want to set a good example for my players by demonstrating self-control. Only once did I go totally crazy — about 35 years ago. We were about to play the No. 1 team, Purdue. We had lost a couple games, and I had implemented a routine during our warm-up, with more ball handling. They weren’t doing it with any enthusiasm. I went ballistic. Before the game in the locker room, every player got a piece of my mind. Yes, we beat them. It was the only game Purdue lost in a 34-1 national-championship season. But I didn’t feel good about it. These were college women, and I wanted to treat them as adults. It wasn’t who I wanted to be. Q: Are there any other secrets to your success as a leader? A: I love what I do. And I have great people around me — assistant coaches who complement me with different strengths. My associate head coach, Kate Paye, is incredibly organized. I’m more pie in the sky. My assistants are better at technical things, like editing game video. They’re thorough scouts. And sometimes players need to talk to someone beside the head coach — and they’re attentive listeners. I am also not afraid to take risks and experiment. We ran one kind of offense for at least 12 years very successfully. When our team personnel changed, I studied the “Princeton offense” and thought it fit our team better. We won the NCAA in 2021 running that offense. Also, I am a lifelong learner — from professors, assistants, players. I watch other Stanford teams practice and ask coaches about their training methods. And I watch so much basketball. I’m a copier who gets ideas from other basketball coaches. My parents in upstate New York were the people from whom I learned the most about leadership. They were teachers, and we didn’t have much money, but we did incredible things. They emphasized the common good. We were five kids. They supported us all differently. I was sent to private school. My sister was given a car. They didn’t keep score. They just understood what each child needed. I am that way, trying to understand what each player needs, and the needs are different. Q: You’ve mentioned your piano teacher as an inspiration. Why? A: She took me where I couldn’t get to by myself. That’s what a great coach does.
Tara VanDerveer, the women’s basketball coach at Stanford University since 1985, at Maples Pavilion on the campus near Palo Alto, Calif., Jan. 11, 2024. VanDerveer, who will soon pass Mike Krzyzewski at Duke as the college basketball coach — man or woman — with the most wins of all time, believes in experimentation, asking for help and the art of the controlled meltdown. (Ian C. Bates/The New York Times) Twenty-five years ago, at Christmas, when I was in my mid-40s, I decided to learn piano. My sister Heidi (the head women’s coach at the University of California, San Diego) bought me a keyboard. After two weeks, I thought, I can’t do this, so I found a teacher, Jodi Gandolfi. So now I’m suddenly a student. I wasn’t used to being a student. You make yourself vulnerable. You gotta play at a recital, and I would bomb, like the kid missing the free throw at the end of the game. So it helped me relate to our players better. Within a year, I was much better and when people were surprised, I kept saying, “It’s not me, it’s Jodi!” It wasn’t just that she was so good technically, it was that you wanted to please her. When I didn’t have time to practice, she’d say, “Don’t worry, we can play duets this time.” She really understood me. And I learned that if you want to be better, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Q: What would you advise your fellow boomers as they struggle to remain relevant in a younger workplace? A: Most important, we can show our younger colleagues that, like my piano teacher, we can take them to a place they can’t reach by themselves. Be yourself, but do not fight change. Young people are the only ones who have grown up with technology — they live on their phones — and with a pandemic. Understand where they’re coming from.

Saban, never showy, almost always successful, leaves a legacy beyond football
Alabama head coach Nick Saban at the College Football Playoff championship football game against Georgia, in Indianapolis on Jan. 10, 2022. Saban retired last week as the coach of Alabama’s football team after 17 seasons with the program, ending a storied partnership that saw him return the Crimson Tide to the top of college football with six national titles in a 12-year span. (AJ Mast/ The New York Times) By CAMPBELL ROBERTSON
T
hroughout a national era of disillusionment, institutional failure and turmoil, Alabama football, of all things, has been a machine of astonishing consistency, humming for nearly two decades at peak performance. On a flinty gospel of hard work and discipline, Nick Saban, who took over as head football coach of the University of Alabama in 2007, ran up a catalog of accomplishments that Alabama fans will rattle off at the slightest prompting: a record seven national championships — six of them at Alabama after one at Louisiana State University — a record 15 straight seasons during which the team was ranked No. 1 at some point, a record 44 Alabama players picked in the first round of the NFL draft. Saban’s retirement, announced last Wednesday,
comes after a season that some have argued was one of the best coaching jobs of his career. Even Bill Belichick, the similarly grouchy New England Patriots coach and Saban’s mentor, who parted ways with his team Thursday after 24 years, seemed to be stepping away a year or so too late. Saban was at times the highest paid public employee in the entire country, a striking illustration of our national priorities, particularly in a state as poor as Alabama. But his successes on the field helped change how people thought about the state and the university. In the late 1990s, when Alabama football was an afterthought, if the state showed up in the news, it was not usually for a good reason, recalled Chris England, now a state lawmaker who represents part of Tuscaloosa. When he told his classmates at Howard University, in Washington, D.C., that he was from Alabama, he said, they would respond, “Wow, how do you live there?” It isn’t like that anymore. “A few years ago, I was in Turkey and I was in the middle of a hotel lobby and had an Alabama shirt on, and people started screaming, ‘Roll Tide!,’” England recalled. “It has changed the reaction.” The timing of this was fortunate. In the years that Saban was in Tuscaloosa, the state embarked on a long run of national embarrassments: sprawling corruption scandals, the resignation of a governor brought about by leaked recordings of his mortifying dirty talk and the whole circus surrounding Roy Moore’s 2017 run for U.S. Senate. (Saban received 426 write-in votes in that election.) Seeing Alabama in a national headline often brought a shudder of dread, like watching a drunk relative stand up for a wedding toast. But one could simply turn to the sports pages. Here, next to photos of Saban pacing the sideline in dyspeptic determination, Alabama was a byword for discipline and achievement. This had been the case decades before, when Paul “Bear” Bryant was the Alabama coach and seemed at the
time to be setting an impossible standard. But Saban not only matched — and surpassed — Bryant’s achievements, he also brought a philosophical worldview that became as much a part of the program’s identity as its on-field success. Saban espoused what he called “the process,” insisting that players focus entirely on what was required of them on each play rather than whatever was on the scoreboard. He preached a restless perfectionism and a deep allergy to praise, which he called “rat poison.” It was out of step with the direction of college football and the broader culture, and grew more so. With his permanent grimace and disinclination to discuss much of anything beyond play schemes and player development, Saban was almost the antithesis of camera-ready. But how we loved watching. Saban adapted, grudgingly but with incredible success, to the changing pace of college football, eventually recruiting some of the sport’s most dynamic quarterbacks. But the true Saban aficionados knew him as the avatar of what was often called “joyless murderball” — steady, unexciting but inexorable conquest. That is not how politics have been typically done in Alabama, where the approach has usually been big on defiance, less so on the details. Consider Saban’s former intrastate foe, Tommy Tuberville, the one-time coach at Auburn University who’s now a Republican U.S. senator mostly known for his showy blockade of hundreds of military promotions. Saban has never been described as showy. He had one job, focused on it relentlessly and succeeded at it far beyond what Alabama fans could have ever dreamed. He did it so consistently and for so long, said England, that fans coming of age in Alabama had no other experience to compare it to. “Only thing he knows is we’re the best and we have been forever,” England said of his own 14-year-old son, nervously anticipating what lies ahead. “He never knew what it was like to be awful.”
How to win more games than anyone From page 27 Q: How is your work different now that your competitors’ fans are forming collectives to pay their players hundreds of thousands of dollars a year for use of their “name, image and likeness (NIL),” and wooing stars like your All-American, Cameron Brink. And what will it mean if universities start paying athletes directly? A: Now I have to work harder to convince families that the return on investment of a Stanford education will outweigh NIL or collective money. But the new Stanford collective is very important to our team’s success. And if universities can pay athletes directly, that will help assure the women do as well as the men, because of Title IX. We’ve worked so hard for equity. I’ve fought for that all my life.
Q: We draw inspiration from those who play (and work) for us. Tell us about some players who inspired you. A: Angela Taylor was on the national title-winning team with two All-American guards so she almost never got to play. I asked her about her role. She said, “to spread sunshine.” Jennifer Azzi was on my national team boarding the bus at 3:30 a.m. on a frigid night in Ukraine when we passed a group of struggling women in thin coats. She went outside the bus and opened her wallet and suitcase for them. Her teammates followed her. Jayne Appel played her final game at Stanford on a broken foot and after the game didn’t want to take her uniform off — she so loved playing. Jamila Wideman told her teammates to pick their heads up after we were upset by Old Dominion in the semifinals, and
they were lying on the floor crying. I couldn’t get their attention but Jamila got them to rise with: “I’d rather lose with you than win with anyone else.” By the numbers Career wins: 1,201 National championships: 3 Times her teams have won 20 or more games (an NCAA record), including each of the past 22 seasons: 38 Percentage of NCAA women’s sports coaches who were women in 1971, according to Women’s Sports Foundation: 90% Percentage of NCAA women’s sports coaches who were women in 2021, according to Women’s Sports Foundation: 41%

(Mar 21-April 20)
Your innate practicality and common sense are apt to be called into action on behalf of a group with which you’re affiliated, Aries. Some of them may be feeling muddled, and you’re the only one who has what it takes right now to see the matter through. Your own goals could be advanced today because of increased focus and clear thinking. Overall, this should be a great day to work on projects of your own. Enjoy!
Libra
(Sep 24-Oct 23)
Letters or phone calls could come today reaffirming the continued success you’ve been enjoying and presenting new opportunities, Libra. Your mind should be in a very good space to consider anything new that comes your way, and your common sense is high so you’re apt to see all sides of it. Therefore, whatever you have to think about, trust yourself! You tend to be innately practical and efficient, but today you’re even more so.
Taurus
(April 21-May 21)
Scorpio
Gemini
(May 22-June 21)
Sagittarius
(Nov 23-Dec 21)
Cancer
(June 22-July 23)
Capricorn
(Dec 22-Jan 20)
Whatever tasks or chores you may have to perform today are likely to go much more quickly and efficiently than usual, Taurus. Your level of common sense is high, as is your physical energy. Success is strongly indicated in any kind of enterprise you take on today, so don’t be afraid to try anything, no matter how outrageous it may seem. By the way, don’t be surprised if other people come to you for advice.
You generally tend toward a very high level of perseverance, Gemini. No matter how difficult a task may seem to you, today it should go very smoothly, particularly if it involves in-depth study or research of some kind. Your thinking is especially clear and down to Earth today, and your common sense is operating at a very high level. Get to whatever needs to be done today and there won’t be any loose ends left for tomorrow. Dreams could shed light on some personal ambiguities you’ve been trying to understand, Cancer. Your thinking is especially clear and logical now, and work should therefore be a snap. Money matters should go fairly smoothly today, particularly if paperwork or legal documents are involved. You should have practical insights that are stronger than usual, especially regarding finance.
Leo
(July 24-Aug 23)
Projects of all kinds that you could be working on with partners or friends could go especially smoothly today, Leo, as your thinking is especially sharp, clear, and logical. You and your friends are in an especially strong place right now, with trust and respect between you at an all-time high. Social events could bring stimulating discussions and stronger bonds between you and others. Work hard, but enjoy every minute of it.
Virgo
(Aug 24-Sep 23)
Today could be one of those days when you look around the house and think, “What a mess!” You might then decide to give the whole place a thorough cleaning. This is fine, Virgo, as long as you don’t try to do it alone. Get others in the household to help out. You’ve been working very hard lately, and if you get too tired you could well be very short with everyone and be very poor company. Pace yourself!
(Oct 24-Nov 22)
Letters or phone calls could come today reaffirming the continued success you’ve been enjoying and presenting new opportunities, Libra. Your mind should be in a very good space to consider anything new that comes your way, and your common sense is high so you’re apt to see all sides of it. Therefore, whatever you have to think about, trust yourself! You tend to be innately practical and efficient, but today you’re even more so.
Today should prove a busy day on all levels. Inspiration for creative projects, particularly writing, should come to you in profusion, Sagittarius, and so you might produce results that could surprise even you. Communication with loved ones is particularly clear, open, and honest today. You will be able to clear up a few matters that may have been bothering you and those close to you. Children could prove a strong source of support and entertainment. Enjoy! Generally you tend to let paperwork go, Capricorn, but today the necessity of handling budgeting and financial matters could force you to sit down and get it all done. However, where money and other resources are concerned, you’re apt to be especially practical and efficient, so don’t be surprised if you sail right through it and get it done well. Other paperwork, such as your own writing, should go equally well.
Aquarius
(Jan 21-Feb 19)
Today sensitivity combines with mental astuteness to bring your innate practicality and efficiency to the surface. You’ll probably have more than one chance to make use of this, Aquarius, whether it relates to work you do at home, you’re helping out a friend, or you’re working with a group. Family members and others find it easy to communicate with you and might come to you with matters they need to sort out. Enjoy your day.
